Now Taking Applications for Pinkbike’s World Cup DH Race Team with Ben Cathro

Downhill racers are a special breed, and most aren’t just chasing World Cup dreams to get rich. But when we did our State of the Sport survey earlier this year we were shocked at how little support many of the juniors and lower ranked riders are getting today.

In the absence of strong national race programs, it's World Cup DH or bust for many racers. The financial commitment of travelling and competing at that level puts the sport out of reach for many amazing riders.

We want to see a sport where talent can rise, rather than only the most affluent being able to compete. So we’re creating a Pinkbike World Cup DH UCI trade team as an incubator for juniors and riders on the bubble that need support to break through. We tried to make it happen for 2021, but there simply wasn’t enough industry support; coming on board with Outside has made Pinkbike Racing possible for 2022 and beyond.

Coached by Line Guy™ Ben Cathro himself, the team will provide the bike, cover all costs, and pay riders a salary that allows them to focus 100% on racing during the season. And with a multi-part video series we’ll pull back the curtain on pro level racing as we follow the team through the trials, tribulations, successes, failures, and glory of World Cup DH.

For the 2022 season we’ll be selecting two riders (one male, one female). We are already in conversations with several racers we think have great potential, but we’d like to open it up for applications as well. Interested?





FAQ

I’ve never raced before but I’m really fast. Should I apply?
Probably not. We’re looking for racers who have had impressive showings at regional and national events. But your results don't need to be only in DH—if you’re destroying the technical stages in EWS races and want to switch to DH, it’s worth a thought.

Is there an age limit?
No, but in general we’re looking for younger, up-and-coming riders.

What bike will I be riding?
We will announce the team’s sponsors soon. The bikes and equipment will not hold you back.

I’ve got an offer from a brand already, do you want to match it?
Maybe, let’s talk, but the idea here is to help riders who don’t have as much support.

Is Cathro going to misdirect everyone in his course previews now to give his team the advantage?
Maybe.

How much are you offering?
The opportunity offers more than just the money, but our financial support will be significantly above typical rates at your level.


Ben and the Pinkbike team will be reviewing the applications, but please note that depending on the volume of applications we may not be able to get back to everyone personally.

 @CM999: Im pretty sure that advertising generates more $ than subscriptions, though I have no evidence to back this up. Smile They point Iwas trying to make is that this team is something PB has been wanting to do for a while and it will probably generate some of the best content on the site. The cynic in me thinks that new, compelling content will end up behind the paywall, but I will be thrilled to be proven wrong.

I could definitely see higher end content like this, that costs them a lot of cash to fund, to be behind a paywall.  So ever since this was brought up when the acquisition was announced, I've been a bit skeptical. Pinkbike is one of the largest MTB news organizations and how do they keep their impartiality when getting involved in racing at a high level? I know its probably not a ton of money, but Pinkbike is now taking money from certain companies and not others with these sponsorships. Probably in the hopes of more and better coverage. I do applaud the effort to raise compensation for racers! And am always stoked to see more competition in DH!

 Well Pinkbike is a new magazine as you stated . Them having a race team is no more impartial then then selling advertising space or there staff getting free bikes from company’s to “test” . Great thing about racing is the results do the talking . They can’t or won’t be able to ignore the facts if they’re team doesn’t do well on race day.

 Dirt Magazine used to have a WC DH team for years too. I don't think it affected their coverage of the races. I think there have been British magazines before Dirt who have been doing this too.

PB didn't specify how many slots exist. and if they are mostly interested in juniors or mostly interested in elites. guess the applications that come in will make that more clear to them. i would hope they'd mix it up as much as possible. 1 elite male, 1 elite female, 1 junior male, 1 junior female. get those apps in kids!

 I personally used to race and my times where a steady 15 sec behind gwin when he was top guy it always felt like if i had real support i could have been up there .....i beleive the money it def holds alot of privateers back i was working 60hr weeks riding a lawn mower to afford racing ... these guys bike all day everyday

 I miss seeing the DeVinci Wilson on the World Cup circuit. I hope they are your secret sponsor/equipment provider! The High pivot Wilson prototype Dakotah and Jure were running was super sweet and seemed to perform quite well.

 Well I guess sponsoring two is better than none, but I was initially thinking as I read that the number would be more like 5-10. I foresee another biking reality series in the making watching the development of these Pinkbike sponsored rider's and their professional development.

 They should make all applications public; with a comment section for each. That way they could also gauge the social media potential of every aspiring athlete.

Nah, I’m joking I just wish they would do that so we could all laugh at the old farts with a CAT 2 top 10 in a local race who are signing up like me.

Some of my best results are Strava KOMs - I assume that counts highly in today’s world of “social first”. Also, said KOMs are the result of multiple French lines at my local trails; again double points for me with the selection committee for both being a “line guy” myself and being “French”.

 @brianpark perhaps eventually you could share all the budget and financial details in order for us peasants have a better understanding of how a WC DH team works in terms of budgeting and what it takes at the end of the season to compete at the highest level giving your athletes a proper salary? I think this is an info nobody shares and people outside the close circle of factory teams don't have access to and having it fully disclosed will help both athletes and prospective team owners that want to take the big leap to the WC circuit. Plus a lot of enjoyment to us content bitches.

Hats off because this is an extraordinary project and I wish it will go only better and higher from here. Pinkbike doing the job the brands with the top budgets are not actively doing.

 Give that support to Tristan Botteram guys! That guy has a lot of talent and can develop much more with better support when focussing full on the downhill. Now he’s still living in the Netherlands, riding a lot on flat grounds and still took the European IXS downhill title this year! Even in world cup he was twice in top 30 with his 'flat' background I think that says enough with only being 20 or 21 years old!

It sounds great buuuuut, what if the team provided bikes, equipment, mechanics, entry, and accom at each round? No salaries, but riders keep their winnings. Maybe they could run 6 or more riders at each round? It would naturally attract the up and comers who could save/raise a few bucks to get to the WC's, knowing they were sorted once there.

Henry has done pretty good too after being on the team. Ben has a good eye for spotting some good youngsters.
