No, Mondraker Isn't Working on a 31” Wheel Enduro Bike

A rumor surfaced recently on Reddit and in several mountain bike forums that claimed Mondraker was working on a new enduro bike with a 31” front wheel. The pot-stirrer who posted it went on to claim that Fox had developed a fork with 1” longer lowers and thicker stanchions, and that the new bike would have a 0mm stem and prototype tires from Hutchinson.

There are just enough little details in there that the story could almost be believable, which is probably why more than one person brought it to my attention, including Brian Park, Pinkbike's resident proponent of even bigger wheels. I'm perfectly content with the current state of things when it comes to wheel sizes and standards, but on the off-chance that this rumor was true I contacted Mondraker to find out.

The answer? An unequivocal, “No, we're not working on anything like that whatsoever,” and that's from a highly trusted source.

LeBron James' 36" wheeled bike from DirtySixer.

Is there a company somewhere out there experimenting with bigger wheels? Undoubtedly – we've already seen Travis Brown playing around with 32” and 36” wheels while doing R&D for Trek, and there are already some smaller frame builders that make production 32” or 36”-wheeled bikes.

Will they ever gain mainstream acceptance? Personally, I don't think so, at least not for most riders. I could see bigger wheels making sense for the tallest riders out there, but for the vast majority of the riding population I don't think there's a need to shake things up again for another wheelsize. Yes, similar words were written when 27.5” and 29” wheels were beginning to emerge, but I'd say things are different this time around. Bigger wheels are inherently heavier, and when you add in the frame and fork required to accommodate them the final weight is going to be pretty daunting. We're already in an era where the average weight of an enduro bike is creeping closer to that of a full-on DH bike – I personally don't want to see bikes get any heavier, and I know I'm not alone.

There's also the handling / fit issues that accompany going to even bigger wheels. A 32” or 36”-wheeled bike could be a goofy fun time on mellower XC rides, but once things get steep and rough it'll be a different story. There's a reason that mixed-wheel bikes are becoming increasingly common – the extra clearance for the rear wheel comes in handy in the steeps, greatly reducing the chances of butt-to-tire contact.

In any case, I'd like to begrudgingly give the troll who started this big-wheeled rumor props for crafting a tale that gained as much traction as it did. Remember, don't believe everything you read on the internet.

You'll know the answer to that if Mondraker comes out with a 31" wheeled bike...

@mikekazimer: So, full review next Monday?

I’d like to see bigger wheeled XC bike. I’m 6ft and I often 5ft 3in girl riders on 29ers - why not something proportionally in line for me 33 or 36in. I just think how fun and awkward such a set up could be for me.

@Fix-the-Spade: Nah, just the First Look Wink
  • 14 4
@trollhunter: To be fair, I find very small people look weird on 29ers. And especially on the downhills one can see that the big back wheel hinders their movement.
  • 12 15
@bashhard: What does it matter how something looks? Isabeau Courdurier is pretty small but is plenty fast, which is what it's all about.

@mi-bike: Now take a guess what rear wheel size she runs. Hint: it's not a 29er nor a 26er
  • 6 1
 @trollhunter: If Lebron is on a 36" wheel, you don't need a 36" wheel. Or even a 33" wheel.

So I am told not to believe something online by the person who is telling me to believe it from an un-named 'highly trusted source' !?
The irony.

Sounds like its a fishing operation for opinions / initial feedback to gauge consumer perception.

Pinkbike report it as something ridiculous but at the same time they are publicising the idea and getting it out there which (I'd like to think not - Id rather think they were on Mondrakers payroll) they could even be doing naively.

I learnt about this technique from a highly untrustable source.

Probably 31” is ahead of the time, but what about 30,5”!!?
  • 6 1
@mi-bike: I keep forgetting that every mountain biker in the world is a pro level racer, and therefore things like comfort, fun, looks, and the bike's performance on people's local trails as opposed to pro race courses doesn't matter at all. Only speed on race courses matters, why can't I get that through my dumb head.

Most platforms are terriable, reddit is absolute trash filled.

For bike stuff, believe it or not, but FB groups are probably the best.(even though FB themselves are very controlling regarding facts.)

if reddit ever ceased to exist, what would happen to pun comment culture on pinkbike?
  • 5 2
Reddit is addictive, but it makes you want to pull your hair out reading some of the dumb shit they say on there.
  • 10 5
@HeatedRotor: r/MTB and r/mountainbiking subs are both pretty good. The first often has good recommendations and opinions and the second sub is great if you love checking out new bike pics. Reddit is great for small hobby subs. They've got a bike mechanics sub that has saved my ass a few times. But man the main subs or anything related to politics is pure poison.
  • 12 0
The best subs on reddit are the "circlejerk" subs.

@gooral: haha your one of those people. I use every platform, because why limit yourself... anyone with any brains wouldnt purposely limit themselves to certain things, especially when searching for info. Theres WAAAY more info in many groups on FB than any other platform(for bikes/specific models)

maybe your missing out and you dont know it, flop.

@DylanH93: I once had a guy try to convince me you don't ever stand and pedal while descending. I was flabbergasted.

@zanda23: Even more toxic are the motorcycle subs. r/moto would have you believe that if you ride anything bigger than 100cc in anything less than medieval plate armour then YOU WILL INSTANTLY DIE.

Thankfully there's r/calamariraceteam for the opposite point of view.

Depends what subs you go on doesn't it. Some will attract better people than others. All social media is inherently terrible but I would take Reddit and subs that relate to my interests so I can talk to like minded people over Twitter, Instagram or Facebook any day.

XC through to DH bikes are hard against the limit of 29" wheels. Let's make bigger and see what it does rather than argue about it with no evidence! It's tedious creeping up incrementally on the perfect solution. Go too far, then come back a bit. Grim Donut approach... talking of which, where is the Grim Donut 2 review???

Yeah, they are working on another standard to make current bikes obsolete ... Because for sure they will come up with some new, better thing just accidentally completely incompatible with existing bikes. I think the headtube will be next Wink I mean, those ZS56 are so flexy, and for sure CSU will creak much less with ZS59.99 headset.

Well the industry is a little bit boring just now so why not? Every manufacturer appears to be rushing e bikes out the door in order to keep their brands noticed by the only people with money in the current climate. Looking at a few manufacturers (orange, commencal etc) they should have waited in my eyes. If only there was a poll...
1. Should someone develop a bigger wheel size?
2. Is the development of the manual bike stalling?
  • 1 0
I greatly applaud your cynicism!! Bravo
  • 5 1
I would legit love to see what something like that feels like as a taller person. 29” is definitively better than 26” or 27.5” for me, why wouldn’t a bigger wheel be even better? Hard to tell without being able to try one. Downsides would be stack height, tire weight, and fitting on bike racks, but who knows maybe it’d ride awesome. Grim Donut 3.0?
  • 1 1
Definitely should be 3.0 tires on a wheel that large. LeBron's 36r looks like a gravel bike!
Hey Waki, wanna draw up an enduroMegaMullet?

"We're already in an era where the average weight of an enduro bike is creeping closer to that of a full-on DH bike"

I'd say with seat droppers, tools, water bottles, and wide-range cassettes, enduro bikes ARE heavier.

Mine is when I have the DH casing tires on
  • 1 0
DH bikes in the super light era (2010ish) OG sessions, 951’s, spiceys etc were definitely lighter. Some people were getting close to sub 30lbs. A stock 2010 mondraker summon was 34 lbs.
  • 3 2
Man on internet know claims to know "highly trusted source" (who has an interest in keeping such a project, if it existed, a secret) refutes claim made by other man on internet who claims to work in fox factory. So basically just back and forth rumors

2nd hand is more reliable than 1st hand information when you consider confidentiality agreements. You would be sued, fired, and black listed so fast. The kind of people that have industry info like that are less concerned with internet clout and more concerned with keeping their job.
  • 1 0
@RonSauce: I disagree, people talk too much for clout all the time. As an Engineer I've seen it happen firsthand in automotive, maritime, and the renewables industry. Those confidentially agreements are there bc keeping industry secrets secret across a company is so hard.
  • 1 0
Ive allways wondered how they make the decision or come to a conclusion on wheel sizes like why 27.5 and not an even 27 or 28 and for what reason did someone decide on 29 and not 30 or 28 whats with the uneven numbers and what where the deciding factors that brought them to the sizes they are now
I think It’s killing my ocd as I type it
sum body somewhere’s gotta know
  • 6 0
650 is an old randaneur wheel size.
29 is exactly the same bead size as 700.
26 was old school klunker size;
But pay attention to the 3 digit number on an old schwinn "26" if you ever need to replace a tire. Not all 26 are 26..

In the perfect logic that seems to accompany the Imperial system of measures, inch sizes on bikes refer to an approximate size of the wheel plus tire. The French system is similar but at least they add a letter to distinguish different rim sizes. But there are many different rim diameters that are all 26" wheels. 29" was invented as a name for what was up until then known as 28" wheels (most common commuter bike size where I live), but with fatter tires. 27.5" wasn't even a name for that size until someone decided that it would be better to name it that way since it is exactly in the middle of 26 and 29. The size is not in the middle of course, but the name is. This list www.getmefixed.co.uk/wheel-sizes-explained-etrto-imperial-radius has 650b filed under 26" wheels Smile There are also 27" wheels in that list but some of them have larger rims than 29ers.

You may think that it is way more useful to simply name wheel sizes by the rim diameter. Actually, that exists. It's called ERTRO. 559, 584 and 622 mm are the common sizes in MTB.
A 29er rim has a diameter of 24 125/256" in stupid units
  • 2 0
They just call it 27.5 because it sounds like a compromise riin the middle of 26 and 29. The tires aren't actually 27.5". Its all marketing on wheels that have been around forever.
  • 2 0
 Bring back 27" (630mm)
  • 4 0
Has to be a 36" front wheel so we can bring back the 69er in a mullet setup.

@mikekazimer: "We're already in an era where the average weight of an enduro bike is creeping closer to that of a full-on DH bike – I personally don't want to see bikes get any heavier, and I know I'm not alone."

Tru. My fs fatbike is my lightest bike at 32lbs, and thus I use it for XC full fat. My mulleted 170/165 enduro bike has a dual crown and is just under 39lbs, and my 150/140 mulleted trail bike is 34lbs
  • 1 0
Enduro bikes are likely to be heavier. They run the same wheels and tyres and brakes, slightly lighter forks, similar weight coil shocks, much heavier cassettes and dropper posts. Plus they need to survive a lot longer than a 3-5 minute run.

My trail bike is also 36-40lb depending on wheels / tyres.

Still too big, really should be 31 13/32" to keep the handling sharp...
  • 3 0
I just think that 29er wheels are already a little too big especially in terms of backside-buzzing..
  • 3 1
I'd actually really like to try a 32/29" mullet bike. I'm 188cm tall and don't feel like my 29er front wheel is as big as I would ever wanna go. For a rear wheel 29" is fine.
  • 1 0
I still don't understand why we didn't just do 28" wheels following the pattern of every other wheel size..

12, 14, 16, 18, 20, .. , 24, 26, [28?? naa 27.something]

There would have been no debate if we had just done 28".

 Hello toe overlap
  • 4 0
Exactly! But by the time 31s go mainstream, they'll have geo based on sub-60 HTAs dialed. Of course, by then the quaint notion of pedals could be a distant memory and we'll be riding AI guided electric whatever the Fs.
