No Live Broadcast & Spectator Access for Red Bull Hardline as Bad Weather Continues

Jul 15, 2023
by Ed Spratt
The weather is set to wreak some havoc on the event for the next days.

After cancelling qualifying Red Bull has announced that there will be no live broadcast or spectator access for finals if they are able to proceed as bad weather conditions continue.

bigquotesDue to extreme weather conditions in the Dyfi Valley, for the safety of the public, the Red Bull Hardline event on Sunday 16th July will be closed to spectators.

While the event site will be fully closed to the public, we are still hoping to run the Red Bull Hardline finals tomorrow (Sunday) - provided weather conditions allow rider safety. We are closely monitoring the weather conditions in close cooperation with the Red Bull Hardline athletes.

The Red Bull Hardline finals will not be broadcast live tomorrow at 2pm as previously scheduled. Provided course conditions allow, Red Bull Hardline will be available to watch post race via Red Bull TV and Red Bull Bike YouTube.

Could go for a ride instead and watch the highlights later seems optimal outcome in a bad situation

@mi-bike: but who will water my dahlia’s and petunia’s?

Speaking of gardening, mine could use a little rain here in Vancouver. The wet coast has beoome the dry coast!

@lastminutetech: you can have ours. I want the summer back. 3 days of monsoon weather is enough.

I kinda always felt live wasn't always the best for things like this or Rampage. Delay it a bit and deliver a tighter package without excess filler when wind/weather delays things.

100% agree, watching rampage last year sucked ass
  • 9 0
Good on them for doing this. It seems like a sensible move for rider safety to not have the pressure of a timed schedule

I think most of the enjoyment for me is the practice and the camaraderie of it all. There's so much to watch and enjoy across various social media that I'm not even that bothered about the race and who wins. Watching pro riders at their best and properly testing their limits whilst being invited along for the journey is great.

They need to do it like snowboarding Natural Selection. They have a week and ride and on the best days. Not ideal for spectators, but works best for weather dependent events.
  • 10 0
That's exactly what the rampage riders have been asking for some year now, a new format where the weather and livestream is not an issue. It would bring a better show for us and for the riders.
  • 3 1
@Frenchemetalheads: it’s not about the show for us. It’s about selling drinks via social media. The RB paid influencers are more important to them than the riders

Has been windy this morning in Dyfi.
Osprey webcam. As excitement goes it is pretty much the exact opposite of watching Redbull hardline for the non-birding mtb lover. And it is just down the road.
Has 250 people watching!!!

Hear ye, hear ye! Gather 'round, noble viewers of the Red Bull Hardline!

'Tis with heavy hearts and a somber tone that we make this announcement. Alas, we must relay the unfortunate news that due to foul and treacherous weather, the live spectacle of Red Bull Hardline shall not be displayed afore your eyes.

Verily, the tempestuous skies have conspired against us, and in the interest of the safety of our valiant athletes and all those involved, we are compelled to forego the planned live broadcast.

We understand the eager anticipation that hath enveloped your souls, and we, too, share your lamentations. We tender our sincerest apologies for any vexation this may bring forth. Be assured, our diligent efforts are now turned towards securing the athletes' safety and exploring alternative measures to bring you the exhilarating essence of this event.

Pray, remain vigilant and steadfast in monitoring the official channels and platforms bestowed upon us by Red Bull. From thence shall flow tidings of any alterations to the broadcast plans or revelations of thrilling highlights to come.

We extend our deepest gratitude for your understanding and unwavering support.

Godspeed to all!

[Note: This announcement is a creative representation of a medieval-style announcement and does not reflect any official communication from Red Bull or the Red Bull Hardline event organizers.]

*screws up ticket and car park pass, unpacks bags, and waves goodbye to £100 Airbnb. What a pisser, my lad has been absolutely buzzing all week about going, we were just about to load the car when cancellation email arrived. Oh well, can't do anything about the good old British weather I guess.
  • 3 0
Please tell me they are reimbursing tickets for you guys?...
Not much you can do about Airbnb unfortunately
  • 3 0
@wilsonians: Yeah, email says refunds for tickets in the next two weeks. First time I managed to get a ticket, got all organised with accommodation etc. Had a mate riding Dyfi today so had planned to pick him up in the morning on our way so he could come in with us as well. And then it all got shot to shit.
  • 14 0
@w0dge: use Airbnb and go riding locally and at least get something for your money?
  • 1 1
@justanotherusername: We did briefly consider it, but it just seemed like driving 3h over there just for the sake of it. Went to local trails here instead today. Boy had a great time so all is good.

Do you think maybe it would be a good idea for Pinkbike to not publish results until Red Bull has released the video then.
  • 8 0
Nah they should announce Gee wins, Kerr second, Evans third and everyone breathes a sigh of relief that Jackson took the weekend off to get his appendix removed.
  • 1 3
No. Tell us straight away. It’s not a proper race anyway so the results don’t matter

Watch BKs latest LSD and the plan is 1 practice run starting at 7am then if its a go racing from 10am before the worst weather arrives.

The reason its not live is that these times aren’t in line with the live broadcast slot that they have available.
  • 10 0
And good on them for adapting to the weather instead of a live broadcast time slot.
Red Bull rampage should always be earlier in my opinion because the winds always pick up in the afternoon… run the event for the weather and film it for a non-live broadcast soon after…

 Bad weather in Wales?
How did that happened?
  • 4 0
pissing torrential rain & strong winds is called "soft weather". its not considered bad, just normal...

... to be fair the last 10 years have been getting drier & drier in the UK.. so its kinda surprising that the last 2weeks have been wetter than an otters pocket..

"Provided course conditions allow, Red Bull Hardline will be available to watch post race via Red Bull TV and Red Bull Bike YouTube."

I'm okay with that. I'm sure they'll post whatever they can and, combined with the POV video from various riders and, I'm sure, Bernard's YT channel, we should get a very good amount of coverage. Only drawback might be that it's not live, but I don't even care if anyone posts spoilers about who won, I just get a thrill out watching these folks ride an insane course.

Anyone who has studied Shakespeare and knows about how things always go haywire when the Elizabethan great chain of being is disturbed, eg the horses kicking in their stables in Hamlet or the storms in Macbeth, with appreciate that the Gods must be displeased that Jackson Goldstone is unable to attend.
  • 8 0
No photos, no video… so you mean it’s officially a fest event, then?
  • 5 1
What!? Are they serious?! The professional free racers/provateers can't send it off the 60 foot clifff step down because a bit of rain? or send the 90 footer because of some wind? God, what a bunch of pansies. The world really has gone soft.
  • 7 3
At least we have already had so much good content coming out from the event. Hope the weather calms down and they get some runs in
  • 6 3
I feel as though part of this is to prevent from live broadcasting a major crash (and subsequent injury) which is increasingly likely with the changing conditions and unpredictable winds.

We rode Dyfi on Thursday but the weather broke on Friday morning and its been mostly torrential ever since.

We rode Bike Park Wales in heavy rain on Friday (which was amazingly grippy) and kept thinking about the Hardline riders. It is surely too wet to ride safely. It looked boggy on the track walk.
  • 7 5
Dude, they are totally going to rig the results and make sure the winner is on a mullet bike so more people buy them, I knew it.
  • 7 2
 And cable tourism.
  • 1 2
No so the winner has the right helmet on
  • 1 0
Why is that a bad thing?
  • 1 1
I'm so excited to watch Hardline, please weather just go on break for a few hours! Similar thing happened with Rampage last year, wind started kicking up and the second half had to be called off. Why not just hold it later when possible? I feel bad for all the riders who've put so much time and thought into doing the event just to have it cancelled, that sucks.
  • 1 0
Damn, there goes my Sunday plans! Hopefully the riders at least get a window of good/safe conditions and they can salvage some broadcast afterwards.

Weather update: 2348hrs still raining like @#£& and blowing a gale.
  • 1 0
Great move Red Bull. Think about doing same with Rampage.
  • 2 1
You'd think they'd just cancel it, what's the point.
  • 1 0
The riders still want to ride?
  • 2 3
No they need the insta buzz to sell the drinks. This is primarily a marketing event, not a race
  • 1 0
 It's been cancelled now.
  • 1 0
If hardline goes on, and nobody is able to see it, did it really happen?
  • 1 0
It's fine if they Strava it. As we all know, if it ain't on Strava......
  • 1 1
Because if only I had a mullet I could ride hardline
