Nino Schurter Reprimanded by Swiss Army After Mooning at the White House

Sep 23, 2019
by James Smurthwaite
Nino throws up the horns at the finish line.
Schurter taking the win later that week in Snowshoe.

Nino Schurter has landed himself in hot water after mooning in front of the White House and tagging Donald Trump.

The Olympic Gold Medallist and reigning World Champion posted the Instagram story with Florian Vogel, Lars Forster and mechanic Kurt Gross en-route to the Snowshoe World Cup with the caption "White (peach emoji) for the White House". The post has since been deleted but was screenshotted and posted on Twitter here.

All three riders are members of the Swiss army, which funds their training. Schurter was on service duty between races in the United States and Daniel Reist, spokesman for the Swiss armed forces, told the press he was paid a day's wages on the day the photo was posted.

“Mr Schurter’s commanding officer will deal with the matter in a proportionate but disciplinary way,” Reist told swissinfo.ch. Reist also defended Schurter, saying that cyclist had previously behaved in an exemplary way when representing the army and this was his first slip up. Schurter has apparently already apologised to his superior officer and the Swiss Army says it did not want to make a scandal of the incident. Nino may face a reprimand but the severity of the punishment is up to the commanding officer and won’t be made public.

The 33-year-old has also already apologized in Swiss media. He told the Swiss tabloid Blick: "The photo was a spontaneous one. America is a magnificent country and I love traveling there.”

@SacAssassin: I have a Swiss Military watch.. a Swiss Army knife.. I'm surprised there's actually an army too.
  • 106 4
@SacAssassin: I believe they have mandatory military service for all men (women may volunteer) and every swiss keeps his/her military rifle in case they are called back into service.
  • 103 10
@SacAssassin: fun fact, swiss have most weapons per capita in the world, faaar more than USA who would be most peoples first choice because of famous second amandament. Thats because every man from age 19-34 is a conscript and keeps his weapon at home. So swiss army has like 2 million soldiers in reserve, plus some funny dressed ones who guard the pope
  • 68 2
@winko: except they dont get bullets with guns at home . They get them for practice when they go to the range for mandatory target practice and have to return unused ammo . I lived in Zurich funny story my 7 year old walks up to me at train station and hands me a military carbine . I found it! Can I keep it Daddy! A bunch of young guys on their way to service and one of them forget to bring his gun lol

@SacAssassin: If only people understood the second amendment to have slightly more swiss meaning ... "well regulated militia" - stay out of other people's business, have a self defense army, and people who get guns are properly trained. wadda concept.

@dontcoast: "Well regulated militia" doesn't translate to 'stay out of other people's business'.  @dontcoast: bingo. That is the major piece of verbiage in the 2nd Amendment that is repeatedly overlooked by many.

I like guns. I love shooting them. Not many people who can outshoot me, unless it’s their job, but I’m all for more gun laws. It’s a weapon, not a toy. And only those who are well versed in the care/use/responsibility of owning a weapon....like say, a well regulated militia, should even own them.

And you conveniently left out, “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

But the real question is, do YOU own any guns? Because I’m willing to bet that like most 2nd Amendment critics, you hypocritically own a gun or two yourself. So honestly, do you?

  • 32 9
@dtm1: show me how gun owners are in ANY way incentivized to be organized, disciplined, and ready to do anything for the greater good.

“the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" is the second part of the same sentence as "well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State" ERGO the right to bear arms is contingent on being part of said militia - which should be organized and disciplined.

I'm not against "guns". I think owning a gun is a big responsibility - hmm let's see cars are useful tools that could easily kill people...and you need registration for that. owning any gun, let alone owning assault rifles with ammo in your attic without REGISTRATION, is absurd.

@dontcoast: @dontcoast: The whole “well regulated militia” thing is not overlooked or forgotten, and has been adjudicated by the Supreme Court. www.law.cornell.edu/wex/second_amendment
Interestingly, it was perceived one way the first time in the 1930s, then interpreted the opposite way in the most recent decision on 2008.
To your point about gun owners having no incentive to be organized and ready, the Framer’s wrote those words when people did have incentive — to protect themselves from external powers that sought to subjugate them, as England had done. Every citizen could, in theory, become a member of this militia at a moment’s notice (without prior training or You can certainly argue that this need doesn’t apply today, but @trailbike is accurate in his description/intent of the wording.

@dontcoast: "Assault weapon" is a word made up by the media. Assault rifles are military issued selective fire weapons like the m16 or m4. They were based off of the AR15 but they're not the same thing. AR stands for Armalite the original manufacturer btw.

Guns laws like registration and background checks are important, but banning certain guns is wrong imo. What criminal gives a shit about gun laws anyway?

I'm no Republican but I think the radical left response to this is unconstitutional at best.

  • 1 2
@badbadleroybrown: why would they mention militia in the text then? lol
  • 10 1
@dontcoast: because the founders had just finished fighting a war against a tyrannical state militia... but they recognized such military forces were necessary to the security of a free state. They therefore made it clear that, although an armed militia is necessary, the ability of the people to resist that militia should it ever again be necessary would be safeguarded in their right to keep and bear arms. It was mentioned, ironically enough given the propagandist interpretation of today, specifically to draw a contrast between the need for a militia and the right of the people.

You basically have a bunch of men who just fought a war against a militia realizing "well, f*ck... we can't just not have a militia and maintain our independence so how do we ensure we don't end up subject to tyrannical rule from our own future leaders now that we've fought our way free of King George III"

... so they made sure we'd have the ability to resist such a force through the second amendment.

@badbadleroybrown: Additionally, at that point the Framers were still undecided about whether or not the federal government should even have a standing army. Many saw a permanent army as too tempting a tool for the government to use toward imposing its will on the citizenry. This fact sheds additional light on why the Framers were inclined to encourage Americans to embrace the notion of being citizen-soldiers, ready to protect their freedoms as part of spontaneous militia at a moments notice. @dontcoast, we think of militia in very different terms nowadays, which is why it might feel like such a head-scratcher.

@DirtbagMatt: Scary part is look at those up/down votes - @trailbike still pulling in > 25% of the popular vote #merica
  • 12 0
@DRomy: Honestly, even beyond the wording of the second amendment, even a cursory review of some of the writings of the founding fathers illustrates their deep distrust of government and firm belief in citizens being armed as not just a right but a duty.

Hell, Jefferson alone serves up plenty of material to that effect:
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."
"What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms."
"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."
"On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed."

But really, Noah Webster effectively settled the debate long before it began:
"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops."

  • 11 2
@won-sean-animal-chin: Who's worried about gun fights? Not sure what kind of propaganda you've been inundated with that's led you to think there's gunfights happening but, unless you live in a liberal shithole like Chicago, Detroit, LA, St Louis, etc... you really never need to worry about gunfights. In fact, the overwhelming majority of criminals with guns are just cowards looking for soft targets like gun free zones or home invasions where they don't expect an armed response. As soon as a good guy with a gun gets involved, the fight is over; they're either running away like the cowards they are, taking their own lives, or getting shot down quick.

Seriously, y'all need to work on your irrational fear of inanimate objects and situations that aren't really happening. You lot love to talk about how gun owners are so scared to be without our guns but the only fear I ever hear comes from folks like you talking about how terrified you are of scary black rifles and random gunfights that aren't actually happening.

  • 14 4
@won-sean-animal-chin: Oh, I can add up all the stats very well and all the facts support my point. If you'd actually bothered to review any facts instead of blindly believing the propaganda you've been fed, you'd already know that.

1. 54% of counties in this country had ZERO homicides, by firearm or otherwise.
2. 2% of the counties in the country accounted for 51% of all homicides committed in this country.
3. The worst 5% of counties in this country accounted for a full 68% of all homicides.
4. The worst 20% of counties in this country account for fully 80% of all homicides committed in this country.
5. Only 3.2% of public mass shootings occurred when guns are permitted, the other 96.8% occurred in areas either designated as gun free (such as schools) or where guns are prohibited by statute (like bars).
6. A current poll on left leaning MSNBC as to whether or not people should be allowed to carry guns in public has over 1.3 million respondents currently and 65% of people stating that they believe it's a constitutionally protected right to do so... so you might wanna slow your roll on that whole "majority of the population" line you heard on TV. Rolleyes

There's nothing "perceived" about American exceptionalism buddy. In roughly 150 years we went from a bunch of upstart colonists to the uncontested most powerful nation on earth with unparalleled economic and military influence throughout the world. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to accept it, but that's a fact Jack.

@badbadleroybrown: thats dumb. You can shift around the homicides to all the counties you dont like all you want. The simple fact is you have a ton of gun deaths because of your lax gun laws and the sheer amount of guns. A lot of school deaths are not in those communitues youre calling shithole counties. Brainwashed, you can convince yourself of the most assinine reasoning because of your love of guns and the perseived view of thats what your country stands for. Its stupid at its core. Most countries gun deaths are concentrated in high population areas/cities. Thats not rocket science there genius. Its the % of gun deaths/violence nation wide that is the barometer
  • 12 0
 @won-sean-animal-chin: lol

How exactly do you "shift around the homicides"? If people get murdered in LA County, there's no way to shift that to Kern County.

The reality is, we have a problem with high concentration liberal population centers not a gun problem. There's a reason that places like LA, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, NYC all lead the nation in firearms homicides and there's a reason that when you look to traditionally conservative areas, it's the liberal population centers within those regions that have highly concentrated firearms crime. For example, gun crime throughout Texas is on the decline and has been for years but that is offset by increases in places like Dallas and Austin which have increasingly become more liberal and more populous as people emigrate from places like California and bring their misguided politics with them leading to a more permissive attitude towards criminals. Even within those population centers, there's an extreme concentration of gun deaths. In Boston, for example, 53% of the city’s gun violence occurs in less than 3% of the city’s intersections and streets

Your entire premise if badly flawed. You can't claim that the barometer is nationwide gun deaths when the gun deaths are locally concentrated to a few regions. If it's a nationwide issue than the statistical dispersion would fall within a relatively narrow window throughout all counties, which isn't the case. We have a very small number of counties with firearms homicide rates vastly outpacing the statistical mean and a large number of counties falling well below the mean. Ipso facto, it's a localized issue rather than a systemic one. Your efforts at using school shooting deaths, which represent a statistically insignificant portion of the total firearm homicides, is pure ignorance. School shootings represent less than 1% of firearm homicides so where that 1% occurs isn't statistically relevant.

The simple fact is, you have no facts. And you should probably refrain from talking about rocket science until you can spell "perceived" correctly there "genius".

@dontcoast: The 2nd amendment is about the people being able to overthrow a tyrannical government. If it meant that you had to be part of the army that would defeat the purpose since the army is controlled by the government. Let's not forget why we fought the British, they tried to tax us without giving us representation and the final straw was when they came for our guns so that we wouldn't be able to defend ourselves.

@won-sean-animal-chin: WTF ? How do you move homicides from one place to another ?
  • 4 0
@won-sean-animal-chin: Let's not forget that 2/3rds of all gun deaths are by suicide. Japan has very strict gun laws and yet they have a higher suicide rate than the USA.

Also it is estimated in the USA that on the low side 200,000 times a year a gun is used in self defense and on the high side close to 2,000,000. Hard numbers are difficult on this subject because many people don't report when a gun is merely shown and the criminals flea.

@juansevo: Just as soon as you convince all the criminals (and insane people) to follow gun laws (or any law for that matter) making more gun laws might make sense. Otherwise, any new gun law will only affect law-abiding people who aren't the problem. Law abiding people have a right to defend themselves however they deem appropriate. Plus, over 200 gun laws already exist, unfortunately, very few of them are strictly enforced.

For the last year on record, there were 266 firearm homicides in Canada versus a total of 23 school shootings in which 55 people were killed. So much for that whole "your school shootings out number our total shootings" line of bullshit.

I had/have a single shot 20guage , 22 semi auto. What more do you need? Living in a national park I’ve had no use for them for years. There with the family somewhere, same place I’d get a rifle if I hunted big game(I don’t/didn’t). Having so many guns means there’s more chance of them getting stolen. One of the main reasons for current shootings in TO. Stolen guns from the states

@BenPea: actually, studies in nations where firearm bans have been enacted indicate that bans have little effect on suicide rates and really only dictate the methodology.

  • 2 5
@badbadleroybrown: apples to apples, you have 140% increase in gun deaths over canada. Probably similar with otger western nation. Australia is a good example. After sensible gun laws were enacted a demonstrative decrease in gun violdnce. You only have tzlking points that support your own narrative. Much like your politics. Your dream if you think half the military will join with the hicks. They dont even need to your so easily brainwashed
  • 5 2
@won-sean-animal-chin: actually, the existing rate of decline in gun deaths slowed following Port Arthur and the NFA. Looking at the ten years prior to and ten years following, it could actually be argued that the ban had an overall negative effect on the rate of decline in gun crime.

As for the rest of that, I'm not sure what's worse; you using demonstrative instead of demonstrable in an attempt to sound intelligent or you trying to say 140% as though it's bad when it's actually much much higher, close to 600%... even even facts are on your side, you still can't get them right Rolleyes

But again, this underscores my earlier point about population centers. Even un Canada, your firearms homicides are concentrated in the higher density population centers but whereas you have two provinces with population density in excess of 5000 people per sq/km, the United States has literally dozens of such high density population centers. Given that we have several thousand percent more high density population centers, having 600% more gun crime isn't actually that catastrophic.

So, once again, the facts support my position and all you have is banal insults and manufactured outrage.

As for the military... I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. There's no way to factually debate that but I'm quite certain I know literally hundreds more US servicemen than you do and I'm quite sure where the vast majority of them stand... and that's before we start factoring in veterans and non active duty reserves. Not sure where you think it is that the military draws their ranks from but, newsflash; the military is primarily composed of good ol boys like me. Despite what your media tells you, I can assure you that patriotic constitutionalism runs far deeper in this country than does pandering propaganda.

  • 6 2
@won-sean-animal-chin: You're terrified of crimes that aren't happening or are happening at statistically insignificant rates and of inanimate objects... and you're calling other people cowards? Bro, that irony game is on point. lol

You honestly couldn't be more of a propagandist puppet if Beto had his hand shoved up your ass to make your lips move... automatic weapons mowing people down? What f*cking movies are you watching that you think are real life? The last time an automatic weapon was used to "mow" anybody down in this country was in the 1997 North Hollywood shootout and the only two people who got "mowed down" were the two shooters. Automatic weapons haven't been mowing anybody down since the prohibition era gang wars. Seriously, it's impressive how wrong you are and that you keep coming back to look dumber... I mean, you should've accidentally gotten something right by this point.

And I'm very well aware of what the armed forces are trained to do and, despite what you may think, very few of them are trained to "bust heads"... but the fact remains, rural areas are massively disproportionate in their representation in the military. Nearly half of all military serviceman are "hicks" as you so colorfully put it. The military is also disproportionately conservative. No camo, cupcake... when the boogaloo finally kicks off we'll be wearing Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts.

As for cowards; fearing guns and assuming every gun is a threat to you is the epitome of cowardice... lemme guess, every time you see a guy with big biceps you think he's gonna hit you and cross to the other side of the street right, right? When they pull out a knife at the local sandwich shop, I bet you run for the door huh? Everybody who takes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Taekwondo must be living in fear too right? The only thing that's been proven time and time again is guns stop bad people from doing bad things and, without guns, good people just die until a good person with a gun shows up to stop bad people from doing bad things... all the rest of that banal nonsense you keep vomiting up is just your fears and insecurities talking.

If you wanna start talking quality of life; again, it's purely a matter of shithole liberal population centers dragging the rest of the country down. If we remove those cities from the equation, US ranks near or at the top in everything from murder rates, overall crime, quality of life, cost of living, etc. You just can't seem to wrap your tiny little brain around the reality that life in America =/= life in Chicago or LA.

Well, I have created quite a shit-show here.

The fact is, the White House stands for more than just Trump: contrary to what some of you seem to have forgotten. To do this is insulting to the US as a whole, which is quite asinine considering what this country stands for (not what all of you have fixated on it in the past couple years of our current president). This is a country of giving and hope and sanctuary, or that is what is tries to be. To say otherwise is like saying that Christianity is represented by Creationists. Do you also believe this?

If he wanted to be clever and insult Trump, Trump has plenty of real estate with his name implicitly or explicitly tied to it. Not to mention that being part of the military means your actions represent more than just yourself, so that in itself is just downright dumb to ignore.

That's about all I have to give as input, as most people have some major vision-narrowing about what the USA is.

@ATV25: gotta teach the next generation proper respect and responsibility with the weapons so they understand them and don’t let the liberal teaching base that they’re these big evil things. I wanna build a precision .22lr for my 10 year old to get to 200 yards with. Then step him up to a .17 hmr
  • 3 1
@won-sean-animal-chin: my 10 year old isn’t really into bikes so guns gives us a fun past time to do on the weekends and he’s not bad for only a handful of trips to the range. I will do anything for quality 1 on 1 time with my kids. My 4 year old will most likely be my downhill rider.
  • 3 0
@scotttherider: Yes, you are 100% correct, we do need to teach them. I was taught at a young age ( 7 or 8 ) to RESPECT a firearm, anything less was unacceptable. That is so cool your child is into shooting. I am no enthusiast, jus play a little, but do believe everyone should learn to handle and respect arms !
  • 1 0
@scotttherider: fair enough Scott. I learned that way too at a young age. You sound like a good dad. Ive nothing against guns just this gun culture we have now. I fed myself for years stocking my freezer with partridge. It went in everything from bbq to kraft dinner. Also lots of target practice with my 22 semi around or before hunting season. I just dont see the need for a stock pile of rifles that can fire of a zillion rounds or side arms or lax gun laws that put them in the hands of almost anyone. I never got into boasting about guns. Id rather not kill anything and i dont need them for protection

Spent the morning at the 300yd range with my AR10 today... then bought a Sig MCX Rattler Canebreak in .300Blk, gonna get the ball rolling on the tax stamp for a suppressor tomorrow.

@won-sean-animal-chin: lol you looked at my profile :lol

Gosh, I'm so disappointed that my profile failed to gain the approval of a Canadian coward who lies awake at night triggered by American guns.

delicate little whiner that your constantly having tantrums about how other people live their lives. Honestly, every post you make just shows a little more of what a straight running bitch you are.
  • 3 0
@badbadleroybrown: 300blk with suppressor and sub-sonic ammo is straight nasty! I wanna get my carbine length ar10 dialed from 100-400yards my Remington 700 dialed from 400-700 yards. (Maybe go for that coveted 1000 yard .308 grouping) Then maybe I’ll invest in a bigger bore toy....
  • 3 1
@won-sean-animal-chin: thank you for finally agreeing on something. I do get some anti-gun arguments but I do feel we can find some common ground. Seriously I’ve spent plenty of time in Canada and have no qualms in your guys firearm control. If the states adopted Canada’s safety requirements of taking a full blown class and extensive ongoing periodic background checks with like 6 month waiting period to get for firearms acquisition license or card(whatever it’s called) but with our liberties in what guns we can own short of a class iii license I’d be content with it.

But sure, keep running your mouth like a true keyboard warrior while you're the one afraid of inanimate objects because your TV told you they were scary.
  • 3 1
@scotttherider: yeah... I was set on adding a 6.5 Creedmoor to the collection but my .308 really does well at the distances I typically shoot. A guy at the range had a .300Blk stamped SBR with suppressor today and let me put a few magazines through it and that pretty much sealed the deal. Didn't want to deal with stamping the rifle so took the braced PDW shortcut with the Sig. The Canebreak is rad... 5.5" barrel, only 11.5" with suppressor installed, and 8" shroud, super compact. Gonna be a perfect compliment to my 11.5" SOLGW 5.56.
  • 2 1
@badbadleroybrown: yeah the whole SBR stamp/pistol loophole is dumb. Just let us put a stock on our toy and call it a day. That’s gonna be a fun set up when complete and the cost of blackout ammo seems to finally be dropping.

@won-sean-animal-chin: even with the advantage of drone strikes and air superiority in Afghanistan they've been unable to "crush" insurgents... in the states where they wouldn't be able to run air strikes it'd be an unwinnable proposition for the military. And that's if we assume that the military would even violate their oaths and operate on American soil against citizens. More accurately, it'd be NG and alphabet bois against millions of rednecks and veterans and half the military would go AWOL to join the fun.

All you're really saying is know nothing about tactics, have never seen or been a part of any combat action, and would rather bend over to get f*cked by your government than die on your feet like a man.

@BenPea: overzealous police officer... you're making my case for me, that poor man had no chance to defend himself against an armed intruder. Nice try though.
  • 3 2
@badbadleroybrown: 524 children aged 0-11 shot in the US so far this year. 1288 accidental shootings so far in 2019 (but Christmas is coming so there's gonna be some pretty rowdy parties, especially as half of us expect the world to end imminently). I'm wondering if these figures are bad or not really.
By the way, there was some pretty low-quality name calling earlier. Not ok. I'm actually thinking the Canadian above might be more trigger happy than you boys when it comes to the crunch.
  • 2 3
@badbadleroybrown: I wouldn't have fancied his chances in court having shot a white female police officer...
Anyway, this is none of my business.
  • 4 1
@BenPea: does it matter the race or sex of a person once they're dead? Should I be more concerned because it was a white woman?
  • 4 2
@pinnityafairy: of course not, you're not America's legal institutions. Anyway, as I said, it's none of my business and I'm only here to push the comments up to 1000, cos it's been a while. Last one was about... guns!
  • 2 1
@BenPea: again, as stated several times, those figures are badly skewed by shithole liberal population centers. Feel free to reread but I'm not repeating myself again. Suffice it to say that 20% of the country is responsible for the huge majority of the issue.

But again... demanding law abiding citizens to surrender their freedoms based upon what criminals are doing makes as much as demanding sober drivers surrender their cars to stop drunk driving or demanding all men cut off their dicks to stop rapes.
  • 3 1
@BenPea: unless she had a warrant to be in his apartment he'd have been just fine. Regardless, I'd rather take my chances being judged by 12 than carried by 6.
  • 5 0
@badbadleroybrown: I wasn't supposed to cut my dick off?!
  • 2 1
@badbadleroybrown: Listen, I'm not saying that it's realistic to try and put any meaningful number of America's guns back into Pandora's box, just that it's a shame this is the status quo. But there's a lot of other bad shit going on in the world, so it's just a shame alongside countless others.
  • 3 2
@BenPea: I agree that it sucks when kids die... which is why I'm in favor of solutions that will discourage crime and opposed to senseless feel good nonsense that restricts individual freedom while doing nothing to help the problem.
  • 3 1
@badbadleroybrown: that would require a vast and costly social policy geared towards eliminating inequality, educating the population and managing the mental health pandemic. Not sure this is on the cards.
Indeed, guns don't kill people, scared/desperate/disenfranchised/embittered individuals kill people. And there are quite a few of them about.
  • 3 1
@BenPea: nah... nothing nearly so complex, it just requires ending the absurdly permissive attitude towards criminals that's pervasive in all this country's worse areas. California is a joke when it comes to prosecuting criminals, and they put violent offenders back on the street regularly only to feign surprise when they commit more violence. Capital punishment for all mass shooters and gang shootings... no more gun free zones creating soft targets... shit will clean itself up real quick.
  • 4 1
@BenPea: There's an old saying here in the USA. "An armed society is a polite society"
We need more good people willing to carry guns. I think people are brainwashed into thinking these mass shootings happen so regularly but if you look in the big cities (Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit etc..) A lot of the gun violence is gang related. What people think of in mass shootings are the big ones like Las Vegas, the theater shooting in Aurora Colorado but when the media start spewing out numbers they include gang violence where two or more people were shot or when a family member kills their whole family. They are all sad but doesn't really give the same picture as a school shooting like Parkland Florida a few years ago. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.
  • 3 0
@badbadleroybrown: Punishment isn't even a word in California anymore. AB109 has made a complete joke of the system !!!
  • 4 1
@SladeTheBlade: I didn't mention mass shootings. You only have to be caught in crossfire or be on the end of a serious piece of misfortune (>1200 bullets hitting flesh accidentally and >500 kids under 12 shot so far this year remember) to suffer as a consequence of laisser-faire gun regulations. Gangs are just exploiting the abundant supply of firearms.
Also, aren't there already a couple of million people already in jail in the States? How many shuffling along on death row for years in end? Are people really being deterred by the prospect of execution?
Punishment doesn't even work with my kids, why would it work for a dude who's got no life prospects and doesn't have much to lose if he gets locked up. Ask the experts how effective they think jail without rehabilitation is. And you can't just exterminate people because looking at root causes is too difficult. Something like 100 billion dollars annually it costs to accommodate inmates. Think what that money could do if you invested just half of it in education and community support. Yours is an incredibly wealthy country. No, I'm not a communist and I'm not even talking about taking away people's guns, the fondness for which I can appreciate. They are intrinsically linked to the soul of the States, like baguettes, cheese and wine in France.
  • 4 0
P.s. some people have to be kept away from society, yes, but you've got to help them rewire their brains and give them somewhere to go when they're done in the institution. Jails are being run by big business whose only interest is skimming off money from the governments they put huge efforts into lobbying.
  • 5 0
@BenPea: America is not wealthy at all. We are $22 Trillion dollars in debt. Honestly I think we could save a lot of money by decriminalizing drug use and shrinking the size of government. Half of our prison population is people that have no history of violence. We could easily take that money and invest it into our communities. Just about anything our government touches turns to crap. And a lot of the state governments aren't much better. It needs to change in our local communities first and then spread from there.
  • 4 0
@BenPea: agree completely with this statement!

P.s. some people have to be kept away from society, yes, but you've got to help them rewire their brains and give them somewhere to go when they're done in the institution. Jails are being run by big business whose only interest is skimming off money from the governments they put huge efforts into lobbying
  • 3 0
@BenPea: California is in the process of ending the for-profit prison system.
  • 5 1
@BenPea: exactly... too many people in prison and too much incentive to keep them there. Execute them and solve both problems while providing a safer community overall, helping to curtail overpopulation, and benefiting the environment. It's a win all around. If liberals were half as eager to kill murderers as they are to kill unborn fetuses crime would be a hell of a lot less prevalent.

Root causes only matter if you don't believe in personal responsibility. People aren't murdering and raping because they didn't go to a good school they're doing it because they're shitty people who don't deserve to live in society among the civilized. And punishment works, but it won't work when criminals know they can spin a sob story about how mommy didn't love em enough and get life in prison where taxpayers fund their useless existence. Flip that script back to capital punishment and folks aren't going to be ok with the consequences of that thug life.
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: Tribalism dictates that your statement might not be welcomed.

@badbadleroybrown: that's some dark shit right there. I see this is the outcome of different sections of the population being pitted against each other by the powers that be, a. because it's possibly cheaper and less complicated a solution than trying to make society more harmonious, and b. because while the people in the street are busy hating each other, the guys running the business called democracy can go about their dealings in relative peace. Our dear leaders allow people to become dehumanized to manufacture a scapegoat they can hide behind with impunity, while patriotic slogans are pumped out and deals with our supposed enemies are done.
  • 2 1
@endlessblockades: California is so busy releasing criminals they won't need a prison system before long.
  • 2 1
@BenPea: it's not about hate... people in the street don't hate each other, that's a fallacy. There's shitbag criminals who can't conform to society and then there's everybody else. They dehumanize themselves and the 'dear leaders' continually bend over backwards in the name of rehabilitation to garner the feel good vote.

The reality is that egalitarianism is a myth and inequity is a natural factor of life. Until people can accept that reality, there can't be harmony.

The meuller report show multiple instances of emoluments violations and obstruction of justice, but a memo written by a criminal to cover for Nixon during his time led some to believe a president is impervious to criminal indictments. That’s just not true. Now, trump has clearly attempted to persuade a foreign government to support his 2020 re-election, and this is the smoking gun. Anyone who thinks he is intelligent enough to lead our country is what we call an uneducated voter, a member of a cult of personality. He can do no wrong in their eyes.

@allan2002: the hypocrisy is your leader parading as if he’s a social justice warrior while being the opposite behind closed doors. Example. And be greatful for the electoral college, otherwise the president would be chosen by the same 3 or 4 states every election - and for such a large and diverse country, that would be terrible. Also, if you're going to criticize the electoral college, like Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Clinton herself, (all of whom were ok with working in the Senate) you should be criticizing the Senate. Because it uses the same system to give smaller states a say in the process. you think anyone would give a second thought to Colorado if it weren't for that system..?

@clink83: Russians Tried to hack both parties, but couldn't get into the Republicans. The Obama administration knew they were doing this and did nothing. This was not the first time a foreign government has tried to influence voters, but regardless, No votes were changed by Russian interference, which means Russians didn't interfere with the actual election. If anything, James Comey's shenanigans right before the election probably played a bigger role in effecting the election than Putin.

Trump's Son did meet with a woman claiming to have dirt on Clinton, but Clinton paid a British man to come up with the whole Russian lie. So, is it ok for an American candidate to collude with a foreign agent as long as they are British?

If there was actually obstruction, Trump would have been impeached by the Democrat House - why hasn't that happened if there was obstruction? oh... because there wasn't...
  • 28 31
@deeeight: It's not the yes men in the Senate that "impeach"a president, they confirm it after the House "impeaches". If the Democrats actually believed Trump broke the law, they would have no choice, but to impeach him. and if the House does and there is evidence, the Senate would have to confirm it or face serious political backlash. Your problem is that there is NO evidence he broke the law so Democrats have NO grounds to impeach him.

This is why the narrative immediately switched to Trump being a racist as soon as Mueller's report came out - they had to move on to something else .

This country is, by design, a constitutional republic specifically to combat the cancerous group think that accompanies massive population centers. The founders knew that the biggest threat to a government which represented all the people was to give repetitious voice to the indoctrinated masses of localized population concentrations which would allow it to drown out the interests of rural states. The worst thing that could happen to this country would be to let the people of a few highly populated states dictate the law for the rest.

Yes, you're indoctrinated by being in high density populations. People are encouraged to believe whatever the group decides is popular... shit, you really don't even need to look beyond Pinkbike to see that effect. Whether it's "Kona's all break" or "SRAM brakes are terrible" or any number of other idiotic popular narratives that take hold, you can see both the widespread indoctrination to that belief as well as the rabid response towards anyone who doesn't agree with it.

Where it goes its from upstart nation to the most powerful country on earth in a little over a century. So... yeah.

But the fact that you think it represents the "wealthy elite and their corporations making decisions for us" is so wildly stupid it really perfectly highlights why a pure democracy is a bad idea.
  • 13 4
Pure democracy is 5 wolves and 2 sheep deciding what's for dinner....mob rule and bullshit. Not a Trump voter but....

Electoral college is check /balance for rural/urban states just as House of Reps/Senate is...balance. Sometimes left wins, sometimes right. Both major parties are power hungry charlatans and neither has the best interest of the country in mind. Anyone thinking left or right is innocent in the country's issues or somehow 'cares' about us is sorely naive.

I will await my down votes.
  • 7 1
@nurseben: No! Instead we stop being ignorant lazy tossers and understand how and why this happens. At that point, there is a hope to change it without violence. That is why the 1st amendment is so important.

That said, I agree with many that the purpose of the 2nd IS TO BACK UP THE FIRST! Which is precisely why the 2nd says, in part, "...being necessary to the security of a FREE STATE, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

When people don't understand or know history, they acquiesce to a loss of liberty. After they've done it long enough, they fight for it! How else could Bolshevism have taken over in Russia? Most of the people that fought for it had no idea that Engels himself had already spoken of the need for genocide of people he considered "racial trash"

There is a reason Jefferson said, “God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion." And then in the very next sentence he says, "The people cannot be all, and always, well informed", speaking directly to the ignorance I mentioned above.

In short, we don't have to "let" these a$$hole$ do anything. As long as we do our own scholarship, which isn't that difficult. Not believing everything that's fed to us off the tube by a media that is legally allowed to engage in propaganda is the first step.

@Snapcatcher: I predict that as a result of Nino's bold action, a formal impeachment inquiry will be launched a couple of hours ago.

 (Moons the camera)
"take that Trump!"
I'm glad to see people are getting smarter about their political protest lol.
seriously though we have enough people behaving like idiots here we don't need Nino adding to it.

  • 5 4
 Because Trump is faster
  • 1 1
@Fix-the-Spade: He should. But they're facing the wrong way for that.
  • 1 2
@willdavidson9595: Than what? That fat f*ck couldn't outrun a dead sloth.
  • 6 0
Not really mooning the WH so not really directed at Trump like some think here, they're actually mooning or maybe opening their asses to the Washington Monument, ouch!
  • 4 0
You don't like someone, so show them your arse. Real classy. I'm sure he will not loose any sleep over that. This is why Trump will win again in 2020. Dems. Libs, please don't stop being you, we are enjoying the show.
  • 4 1
I'm guessing bare-butt spankings will likely be in order when they get back home, with a paddle that looks like... (wait for it)... swiss cheese! Nevertheless, hats (or trousers) off to Nino and team on a well-rounded end to the season.
  • 7 0
Now the up and down vote count is gonna be interesting
  • 15 11
I can't stand it when athletes, celebrities, entertainers, etc get political. Just ride and don't get political. It was much better when people didn't talk about politics, religion, sex, and money.
  • 6 0
Pinkbike was drooling over posting this. The engagement and clicks will be massive.
  • 4 0
Just lost a fan and supporter of you Nino... let your personal believes and opinions stay personal. Don't disrespect my county.
  • 7 1
Joking about Trump is an easy thing, but what about MvdP?
  • 15 0
You have to get in front of him to moon him, which isn't easily done!
  • 1 0
 @R-M-R: sure thing :oD
  • 15 11
Interesting alot of Californians and coloradans posting about what they interpret the second amendment as....just shows you let cnn feed you stories that form your biases
  • 5 2
@jarrod801 just out of interest what’s the relation between Coloradans/Californians and CNN?
  • 6 5
@Gamsjaga: people in those states tend to run in the very liberal direction, and CNN is a more liberal "news" network. the cable news networks here are very biased, and run stories that support their agenda.

@jarrod801: pretty funny that u looked to see where some people are. i did the same thing, and they were pretty much where u would think they are from based on what they posted.
  • 2 3
downvoted? must be someone that's never seen CNN or Fox news. Smile
  • 4 3
@savagelake: yep, intolerant people pretending to be, and then telling everyone what their rights should be according to them.
  • 3 0
 @savagelake: yes, for a sincere question ...
Every media outlet pushes it’s agenda based on their political direction. Nothing wrong with it as long as the media consumer is aware of it.
  • 2 1
@Gamsjaga: Bias is not the same as a lie, as you probably know. Somehow, most Republicans/Trump supporters don't understand that, nor do they care. For more information on the frequency of these lies, see: www.politifact.com/punditfact/tv/fox
  • 2 5
@Gamsjaga: true, the problem is not the media but the complete stupidity of almost every murican.
  • 4 3
@makkelijk: The problem is the Right-wing media, uneducated voters, racists, single-issue voters, etc.. Fortunately, that accounts for fewer than half of Americans, not "almost every."
  • 1 0
@Gamsjaga: they all speak the same nonsense ,!
  • 2 0
This trash should not have been posted to Pinkbike. On most days I am happy to come to Pinkbike because it's mostly bikes and stuff. No politics. It's the only easy thing in a day. Then work, and politics, and trouble. So Pinkbike is mostly safe. Now this.

They got a damn right smart army. Last I checked, they are all issued FN Assault Rifles, The swiss watch of assault weapons. They care of their weapon, keep it safe at home, and bring it to work on their post-work drill days. Damn right by me.
  • 3 0
Actually its the swiss made and designed sturmgewehr 90. I was picking up a car in Switzerland last year and the guy also had his assault rifle at home. Needless to say not many burglaries happen over there, lol
  • 3 0
 @combee: or shootings

No just your president, he’s a plank. So is our Prime Minister, feel free to moon him.

  • 7 7
And what would happen if, for exemple, Aaron Gwin and his team mates ``moon`` in front of the Swiss Parlament while they go to Lenzerheide? Who gives a sh*t seriously?
By the way, that buttface of Trump is mooning everyday in front of the planet and nobody blames him for that...

It's interesting they are part of the swiss army, how does that all work?
  • 4 0
Switzerland has conscription, I'd assume they're all reservists unless Nino's been secretly laying the ground work for the coming Swiss invasion of the world.
  • 6 0
@Fix-the-Spade: Nino, Jolanda and some other Swiss athletes are temporarily employed by the Swiss Army, and receive a small salary, insurance and free residency and meals at the sports facilities in Magglingen. It's part of a national support program for Swiss athletes.
  • 2 0
Same in Germany - it is basically the only way to “go pro” in some sports.

  • 12 9
That’s the most ignorant thing I’ve heard in a long time. AOC might just be the dumbest person we ever had in our Congress. She’s the real embarrassment. But I’m glad you’re a non American specializing in American politics. You must know what you’re talking about. Hahaha!!!
  • 11 2
@nocker: I am half American and I specialize in my other half which is British sarcasm....
  • 3 3
@Imabigboy82: my apologies! I like the way you think! I certainly appreciate sarcasm!!

@nocker: No worries dude, this place is unfortunately full of peeps who would actually vote for AOC so I understand you believing that lol

What is this? The national inquirer of mtb? Gossip garbage. Low brow Pinkbike, very low, nearly as low as the last bit on Nathan Rennie.

Why dosen't he focus on recycling lithium ion batteries

  • 3 1
 Steady!
  • 4 3
Not even going to read the article — this is hysterical.
  • 2 2
Technically said mooning was directed away from the white house, so really they were being super respectful to it.
  • 25 27
Trump is a disgrace to the USA. He has earned his mocking by the world community. Although the actions taken by Nino Schurter and crew were crass, it is the best way to interact with such a crass president.
  • 2 1
Crass, now that was a band I'd love to make the Contards listen to ad infinitum.

in the United States that is called indecent exposure. Here's the law in Washington DC: "It is unlawful for a person, in public, to make an obscene or indecent exposure of his or her genitalia or anus, to engage in masturbation, or to engage in a sexual act as defined in § 22-3001(Cool . It is unlawful for a person to make an obscene or indecent sexual proposal to a minor. A person who violates any provision of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than the amount set forth in § 22-3571.01, imprisoned for not more than 90 days, or both."
