Nino Hits the World Cup Season Opener XC Track with Andrew Neethling - Video

Mar 8, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup XC season kicks off this weekend in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Andrew Neethling and Nino Schurter hit the cross-country course together while talking about what motivates Nino to keep competing each year.

We spotted a mountain bike-specific version of SRAM's wireless 12-speed drivetrain yesterday, and in this video, Nino's POV camera also gives us a look at the SRAM wireless shifter on the right side of his handlebar. If you pause the video, you'll see that it's still a trigger-style clicker, not the compact ring-style system that some of us expected to see SRAM go with. Instead, it appears to employ a single paddle that can be reached from either side of the grip, thereby allowing Nino it use both his thumb and pointer finger to move the wireless derailleur.

"I don't have that many guys in front of me that don't have shaved legs"
"Must be the outfit that's not aerodynamic"

Nino is a legend.

He should've just said "I don't have that many guys in front of me." Full stop.

XC racing always amazes me with how narrow the courses are, and it's all riders on the course at once. Looks like it would be almost impossible to really pass that many people. Great video though, looks like a fun place to ride actually.

You fly up and yell left left ledt left left left and then pass and yell thank you hahaha

Breathing in lung fulls of dust at 170bpm mid pack with 100 riders has to suck pretty bad too.

Nino shows how it's done without a dropper and with a 100mm bike. Food for thought.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Mathieu Van Der Poel does racing WC XC this w/e. That dude has a huge engine.

Thought he was only doing the Euro rounds?

@shorelocal: Sweet! Can't let Van Aert steal all the limelight. It's only a matter of time before he'll beat Nino. The pace is going to be savage.

@jclnv: He has said he is doing the full WC this year. He wants to see the effect it has doing full CX and straight into WC, so he can work out his prep for 2020 Olympics

I thought for a minute that Neethling was gonna take Schurter on a DH preview on xc bikes. That would be a good video.

We NEED to see this! I bet Nino would still crush it too!

Starting around 1:30 (when he's commenting on Neethling's outfit) you can see him hit it from both sides with his thumb. Looks super easy to operate but might lack the paddle placement adjustability of the mechanical units. I suppose you wouldn't need it since you'd hardly put any leverage on the buttons. Anyway, super stoked and if it talks to existing blips and Red levers this is going to be incredible.

This was cool. Needles is awesome. I hope he does more stuff like this now he's retired from racing. nino seems really sound too. The GMBN vid where he schools donny on a WC XC track is also worth a watch.

I'd have him in the booth with Warner. If you're going to have a guy with a token funny accent, I'd rather it were Neethling. Who does Caluori have a pact with to keep him in the box? He'd probably do him on a WC track too.

@BenPea: Needles does already do the odd race / event commentary. I wasn't referring t that. I meant it's cool seeing him riding, messing and chatting with top level riders. I'd love to see more of this.

@BenPea: pretty sure Needles has a contract with crankworx as a commentator.

Hmm that wireless shifting system Nino has looks very cool. It looks to have the same ergonomics as the regular cable shifter, just with no cable. Very interesting

when you have a crappy day at work, when you have an even crappier commute home from work. This video just made my crappy day into an awesome day! Stoked to see Nino race this upcoming season!

That track is impressively hectic. To improve on 2017 Nino is going to have to go bigger with the whips. Maybe some no-handers.

nino's bars look upside down aggressive

Brings back memories Bugzie! circa late 80's/early 90's the search for extreme had us using 110+mm negative rise stems with bar sweep reversed away from the rider and bars cut down as narrow as the cables would allow.....LOL

that actually looked like a fun course. xc courses are evolving better than downhill.

All this makes me hope for is dry and sunny trails........shred on Nino!

I'd give anything for an overly dusty trail and 30 degrees (celcius) right now

 Wireless shifter visible.
  • 1 0
 Anyone see the wireless shifter?
  • 1 0
Yes. I was also, looking to see if he had a dropper. I thought I saw a seal head on the post but probably not seeing it properly. The left shifters are for the twin lock stuff I think.
  • 1 0
Hmm wireless shifter on Ninos bike !!

Nino is so steezy, he whips almost every jump.
