Nathan Rennie Charged with Drunk Driving

Mar 25, 2019
by Sarah Moore
Back in the days when 4Cross was a race incorporating DH and BMX.

Australia's 9news reported today that former Australian Downhill Champion and 2003 overall World Cup winner Nathan Rennie has been fined $3,000 and had his license suspended for nine months after blowing more than seven times the legal alcohol limit.

Nathan Rennie, now 37, blew a 0.362 while driving to pick his girlfriend up at the airport earlier this month. He received a conviction for a similar offence a few years ago.

Was that necessary to post that? Probably most of the kids on here don't know him anyway and for the rest of the ones that do... lets just remember him as the kick ass mtb rider he was (and probably still is). The only people without problems are the ones on the cemetery.

 This.
  • 82 68
 Exactly this /\

Way to gossip about peoples personal lives PB/Sarah. ZERO. CLASS.

Shit like this is why the "stretcher selfie" and "hospital bed selfie" exist - because you have lost all sense of personal space. Mind your business and don't talk about peoples personal lives.
  • 417 49
Fuck that. If he plowed through your wife and kid on the sidewalk you'd be singing a different tune. I don't care how good a mountain biker he was. You pull this shit you deserve to have your face plastered everywhere. Get your shit together Rennie.
  • 150 118
It definitely sucks to have to report this but we do have to. We're a mountain bike news website and this is mountain bike news. Really shitty news, but still.
  • 108 102
@brianpark: how is that related to mtb? Are you kidding us? This is pure trash journalism. Next you’ll check Gwin’s garbage? Is that what pinkbike is becoming?
  • 75 15
whats right is right ! so what? If Steve Peat happens to stab someone coz he was drunk we should all just ignore it because of his accomplishments ??
  • 61 8
If the guy is still relevant...then perhaps he deserves a bit of world wide coverage. If he isn't and is only known for something MTB related 16yrs ago...perhaps a bit tabloidesque
  • 97 21
@brianpark: To me this doesn't qualify as mountainbike news. It isn't even bike news. It isn't even related to sports. Just because he's a legend on a bike doesn't mean his every move needs to be documented on a bike website. There is no "have to" because at the end of the day you're still making choices on what to publish. You choose not to report MvdP went down hard in a road race (which could have affected his race season on the mtb), not that (DH racer) Bas de Bever quit his long and successful coaching career as head coach of the national BMX team which implies he quit his even much longer career at the top of the cycling sports. And see, that's all fine. You can't document everything and you don't have to. But why of all things you (consciously) choose this item is beyond me.
  • 23 24
@brianpark: At least pinkbike should admit their mistakes and not just generate up votes for your response, you just went from negative votes to 11 positive in a few seconds.
  • 34 18
@loopie we were covering Rennie as recently as last December. He's a legend of the sport.

@vinay we should probably have covered MvdP's crash—we were pretty pinned during CWX and apparently his MTB season won't be affected. We try to cover as much as possible.
  • 61 15
If you choose to "remember him as the kick ass mtb rider he was", then you are choosing to ignore the drunk driving, and you are showing the next generation that drunk driving isn't a big deal.

@greendarthtater: Drunk driving isn't a big deal. If it was you'd have as many deaths as you do gun related shootings that happen daily in the USA.

@brianpark: flawed logic. Journalists are empowered with the ability to make decisions about what is news and what is not news. They also take the authority to determine how they report events. Consider the decisions not to report the name of the recent mass shooter in NZ. News outlets have a lot of power and resorting to an over simplified statement that it’s news so we must report it misses the larger social responsibility of reporters.
  • 31 15
Is Pinkbike now the mtb world police blotter? Clearly Rennie has a problem and thankfully nobody was injured so aside from public shaming him what’s the relevance? If you actually gave a shit you’d reach out to offer help.
  • 33 6
@pushingbroom: Thank you for that blatant inoffensive ignorance lol. You're right. We don't have as many drunk driving deaths as deaths from shootings... We have WAY MORE drunk driving deaths than mass shooting deaths. No, those shootings aren't even close to "daily". thank you very much.

@mtbikeaddict: While you are completely correct on the way more drunk driving deaths, around 37,000 per year the last couple of years in the US.

You are mistaken about not even close to daily on the mass shootings, there were 323 mass shootings in the US in 2018, so every 0.88 days, VERY close to daily.
  • 18 10
@brianpark: No I don't think you "should" have covered MvdP's crash unless you think you should have by your own standards. As I mentioned, you can't cover everything, not even everything that's relevant. We can ask you to do a more complete coverage of the Cape Epic but at the end of the day it is up to you to decide whether you think it suits your website and whether you have resources to actually do that. But the cut-off point has to be coherent. If you don't have resources to cover everything, that's fine. But how is this news related to cycling? If it meant he had to go to jail and as a consequence had to miss a race, there is a context. Like what we had with Pat O'Brien who had a little house fire just when he happened to break into another house, got caught and now can't play in support of Slayer at their farewell tour. (Erik Rutan took his place, so that's a relief for anyone worried.) Ok, that's music news. If it hadn't affected his concerts etc. and everything could just go on it just wasn't relevant to us music connoisseurs and the news shouldn't necessarily have been published. But in this case of Rennie, there is just no link. There is also no context. Is he drunk on a regular basis and should be worried about our hero (which then would make it news) or was it a one time event?

Look, I don't condone intoxicated driving. I just think that just because he chose to make a career in competitive sports doesn't mean something he did wrong should be published on the internet and shared with millions.

@Bomadics : Well yeah, that's the point right. So many drunk drivers worldwide. All go anonymously. Their family, neighbours and friends don't get to know (unless he has to admit he isn't allowed to drive for a while). Out of all those, Nathan is being singled out just because he's known. He doesn't get to tell his mtb buddies worldwide, Pinkbike will do that for him. I don't think that's fair.
  • 29 18
Nah, you just want to generate clicks, be honest. @brianpark:
  • 8 5
@Bomadics: Just fix your math, buddy - it should be 365 divided by 323, not the other way around... so a mass shooting every 1.13 days Razz

Which is still close to daily. Which is bad. Very bad.
  • 10 1
@pushingbroom: actually 40000 auto deaths vs about the same in gun deaths but over 22000 of those gun deaths were suicides. About 11000 people are killed by drunk drivers every year in the USA so unless I shoot myself I’m more likely to be killed by a driver drunk or not.
  • 17 13
@vinay from the article: "He received a conviction for a similar offence a few years ago."

I lost my cousins fiancee and my close friend to someone that had a similar blood alcohol to nathan and also decided to drive and killed each of them. It is relevant because as an icon to MTB his decisions are seen as being a role model to others. And his selfish decision was far from role model either time.
  • 10 6
@Bomadics: Did you know that the term mass shooting includes any gun crime where 4 or more people are injured. So when people use it to invoke images of spree shooters at schools it’s not being very genuine to the argument. The majority of those 323 shootings are gang and drug related shootings and drive bys. While terrible they need much different help than most peoples solutions in the heat of a tragedy. If you want to help the overall problem you would look at drug violence. And separately address the issues with spree shooters using that number in this way doesn’t help anyone it creates fear mongering.
  • 5 1

@brianpark: This is not mountain bike news. This guy obviously has his own issues he needs to deal with and work on, throwing it into the public eye will only make things worse and possibly exaggerate his drinking. As an alcoholic who has not had a drink for over 10 years it saddens me to see this article on my favorite website.

Oh cmon man.
Don´t act as if pinkbike was a first class newspaper and this some investigative journalism of massive proportions.
It´s a guy driving a car under the influence of alcohol. That shit happens every day thousands of times in the world, but you feel it´s your duty to report it cause he used to ride a mountainbike ages ago?
You gotta be joking. Let the authorities do their job. No need to rally the hatemob. Keep that gossip shit outta here and keep to stuff actually relevant to the community.

The real question is why you made the conscious decision to select this as newsworthy over a gazillion other, most likely more relevant to mtb and the community, news.
The simple answer is, because it sells. And that´s disgusting "journalism", if you even wanna call it that.

@Loki87: Where is this hate mob you speak of? I see no problem with pb reporting on this considering Rennie is known and still active in the mtb scene. The fact it is in the news and gone thru the courts means it is already a public matter. Having things like this known is not always bad as it can highlight an issue and allow people to reach out or offer support. (or shame and spread hatefulness if you have that type of mindset)
  • 3 4
@loganflores: Ok so you would like to change the definition of mass shootings to make yourself feel like it's not really a problem anyone needs to worry about, is that what you are saying?
  • 8 7
@dubod22: This is a mountain bike website not MADD.com. I come here for mountain bike news, not to hear about people who need serious help in their lives. Yes drunk driving is wrong but putting a guy on blast does nothing to prevent it nor does it help keep anyone else from doing it! All this article is doing is adding more tumoil for this guy to deal with and like I said could likely make his issue worse. Please tell me how this article does anything positive other than making people aware that drunk driving is common and wrong which any competent person should already know. Do a real cost benefit analysis and you can easily see this article does more harm than good. Just because I'm an a*shole and you tell people I'm an a*shole, it doesn't mean it will keep other people from being an a*shole.

Great story, keep up the good reporting Pinkbike. Safe to say that most of the people condemning this article haven't had a friend killed by a drunk driver as I have.

It's still a problem that hasn't been fully confronted and probably never will as long as alcohol is so encouraged in society. But we gotta keep imprisoning these drunken drivers for long sentences, give them huge fines, and shame them in public at the very least.

  • 1 1
@Bomadics: no your changing the definition of mass shooting to fit your narrative. I think it is a problem two problems in fact both needing different solutions and using numbers incorrectly confuses what the best solutions are. You could wave a magic wand and get rid off all spree shootings and this mass shooting statistic your using would go down by around 50 an extremely worthy effort but if you don’t care about the other 270ish shootings than don’t add them to the ones you do care about to make a point.
  • 1 1
@loganflores: Actually you are trying to change what I said by adding in your own agenda. Not once have I mentioned school shootings, you brought that one up.

Please point out exactly how I used numbers incorrectly other than that I got the math wrong on the frequency ratio at .88 per day it was actually 1.13 per day, this was quickly pointed out and I apologised. This did not change the numbers of mass shootings in the US, this

is where I got my info, if you want to debate the accuracy of the data on Wikipedia, then great, let me know where we can get more accurate data!

The way you in your first comment used it makes it sound like we have a columbine every day which is not the case. If this isn’t what you meant than sorry but it sure is how it read and how most people use the stat.
  • 4 2
@loganflores: Again you betray your own bias, you read it that way, don't blame me for your interpretation. I stated a fact, the US has almost one mass shooting per day, you read into that as school shootings, which is how your own mind interprets the phrase mass shooting. This is how the media trains us to interpret this phrase by NOT reporting all the mass shootings, just the really shocking ones.

Just watch how the media works, for instance the yellow vest protests in France, still going on and getting worse again, but do we see this in our news, NOPE, because it does not help their agenda.
  • 4 1
@Bomadics: when there is a shooting they want to take away gun rights.
When there is death rom drunk driving they blame the driver not the car. The problem is not the gun or the car but the person operating them.
Its kind of sad really.
  • 4 1
 @brncr6:

Yeah I think there are a lot of growing problems that contribute to the number of shootings:

1. undiagnosed & untreated mental health issues
2. a lack of people that care or who are involved in these (predominantly) young men's lives that are willing to try to help them
3. easy access to violent material (they tend to fixate/obsess on mass shootings)
4. the feeling of (and reality of) increased isolation brought on by our addictive 'screen culture' and social media fascination
5. easy access to guns

Potential solutions to each of these would require a lot longer conversation.
  • 2 0
 @brncr6: agree 100%!
  • 3 0
@WasatchEnduro: Yes, it's a deeper social issue for sure, makes you want to go ride in the woods and lose oneself in the splendour of off road biking!
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: you can't be high roading when a real issue is being discussed, it's tantamount to virtue signalling.
  • 3 1
@Bomadics: I don’t read it that way I explained why reading it that way is incorrect. “This is how the media trains us to interpret this phrase” that was my point people have been trained to read it that way by the media and politicians by the way those are the only two groups who use this phrase because it’s misleading any law enforcement officer not in an elected position would use statistics related to different crimes not group all unrelated categories to scare people. If you can’t understand that there is a difference between a psychotic person shooting innocent strangers for no reason and a gang or drug related shooting than you likely can’t understand that those two problems have very different solutions. While both extremely important. I care about these issues greatly and that’s the only reason I commented in the first place just trying to inform.
  • 3 2
@Matt115lamb: well that is interesting if drunk driving was such a problem why didn’t you ban cars and guns? When spree shootings happen the first thing people say is ban that gun or all guns we banned alcohol in this country it didn’t work so well. Actually it lead to the creation of our better gun restrictions ie no machine guns or sawed off shotguns which I support. Interestingly in country’s where certain guns are restricted when a spree shooting happens they often get ahold of fully automatic ak47s a lot more dangerous than what you can buy here in the states. Banning things can have unforeseen causes. If you have been following the discussion the number we are talking about is around 330 the majority of those are done with semi auto handguns and 38 revolvers and nobody seems wants to ban those. Banning one gun might help one group and not another that’s why I think we should separate the spree shooters from all the drive bys and gang violence when we talk about this to effectively help all issues. We should stop using “mass shootings” it’s a political term with an agenda.
  • 2 1
@loganflores: Salute totally with you on this one +1
  • 2 1
@loganflores: you do realize an a AR 15 with a bump stock is pretty f*cking close to an AK47 and much easier to get in this country not to mention the multiple "decommissioned" AK47's in this country that are easily converted back to fully auto with a bit of tinkering. I've had a few friend with them. If those styles are so much more dangerous and lethal why do you seem so opposed to banning them? You just admitted how dangerous they are.
  • 2 1
@lifeofloon: I’m not sure if you know the history of the nado 5.56 vs the 7.62 and each ones purpose but we can set that aside.a semi auto ar is not as dangerous as a full auto ak. A bump stock takes skill to use (and not the same effect as full auto” an ak does not. A decommissioned ak needs machine work not a little tinkering and is federally illegal (you shouldn’t call your friends out they shouldn’t do that it’s weird you would have friends doing this but want to ban certain guns are you going to turn them in when certain guns are banned why haven’t you turned them in yet it’s illegal more illegal than an ar15 and you know it what’s up with that. Any machinist with a mill and lathe can make any gun they want if you ban them a 2000$ project just became a more lucrative 8500 All guns are dangerous if in the wrong hands. I think it doesn’t matter what you ban, people will keep doing horrible things with anything they can if we don’t change the culture and find better social and mental solutions. There are other solutions other than bans most people don’t want to hear it.

I appears I am in the minority. But seeing as how one of my best friends lost both of his daughters to a drunk driver, I personally find this disturbing. Based on what he blew, he was really really messed up and had no business being behind the wheel. It is crazy this is on PB, but at the same time I think public shaming is well deserved for behavior like that. If he was barely over the legal limit, whatever. All the people who dont think this is a big deal, have never had to lose anyone to a drunk driver. Rennie and all you people on here who essentially support his decision by thinking it's not an issue, or shouldn't be public, are morons. Acting like it's not is what causes us to think it's ok. But innocent people die because of ass holes like all of you.

So according to your logic, everytime someone gets caught drinking and driving they should make the news ?? This is completely irrelevant to mtb, Nathan retired years ago and he doesnt deserves a worst sentence than a plumber getting a DUI just because he used to ride bikes.Let the authorities and the judicial system deal with this like they normaly would with any other regular person.

This is pure clickbait and garbage journalism. No one here is saying its no big deal to drive while intoxicated BUT it serves no other purposes than make PB richer. If so, please tell me how this is going to help a guy with a drinking problem getting better and how this crap article has prevented him to kill someone now that its already happened? Do you guys seriously think some kids reading PB will be like “oh shit I better not drive while Im drunk if I dont wanna end up making the news on PB”?
  • 9 2
@tuumbaq: Yes, every time someone gets caught drinking and driving they should go to jail, be put on the news. It's a terrible scourge and ruins innocent lives. These criminals should be named and shamed, plumber, Premier, teenager, Mom, or Dad. It doesn't matter they should all be treated the same.

We can hope that he seeks help for his addiction, but my experiences indicate that repeat offenders are just that, repeat offenders.
  • 8 2
@tuumbaq: If you hate this and everything pinkbike stands for, why are you even here? Go bark up some other tree. A guy a lot of us idolized as a rider committed a very serious crime. We should know about it. This changed my view of him entirely.
  • 5 5
Normally people get publicly shamed in the place where it matters - their own region, where they are likely to be driving and be a danger to others. That's fine, and I completely agree. However, I cannot see how this is relevant to anyone on Pinkbike, because if they live in Rennie's region they'll have seen it on the news in Australia already. It's just click bait, and anyone claiming anything to do with kids and role models is barking up the wrong tree - Rennie hasn't been racing or in the MTB public eye since about 2009!!
  • 7 5
Public shaming helps no one and adds nothing of benefit to the situation. He obviously has a drinking problem and needs to address it but if anything the shaming will just make him drink more. An alcoholic doesn't drink because he wants to, they do it to turn off the outside world and numb themselves because they dont know how to cope with life. You are just giving him more of a reason to run and hide behind booze.
  • 2 1
@tuumbaq: if the posting of this article helps stop one kid from drinking and driving it is completely worth it!!!!!!
Maybe if nathan had read an article like this when he was young it may have help him
  • 82 9
But everyone's happy to read the dirt on Missy? How is this not relevant to pinkbike? Rennie is an Aussie DH icon. There's so many real world lessons to take away from this:
- News gives more airtime for this then when he was world cup champ.
- Alcohol can be a great social lubricant, but it's an addictive drug.
- Don't drink and drive. Seriously.
- Own your mistakes (no excuses) and correct them.
- When your a leader/role model your social responsibility is greater than as an individual.
- Rennie is still a character.

I hope the best for him.
  • 2 1
I do hope the best for him. Hes an amazing athlete, and in a position to be a role model. I wish him the best also.

Need to consider the fact that 0.362 is at "seriously hammered" levels, too. 0.400 is where deaths from alcohol poisoning start to happen.

If you are still conscious at a .36 BAC, let alone possibly still functioning enough to even get into an automobile on your own and start it, you are a full blown alcoholic. His base line BAC that he never dips below would likely be around a .10 BAC, which for most "social" drinkers is starting to feel drunk. At that level of alcoholism you can't even just quit drinking cold turkey or you'll go into seizures and possibly die. This isn't remotely similar to someone having a few too many, or having been drinking a couple beers and then getting a call to pick someone up unexpectedly. If he was really at a .36 he needs immediate treatment and intervention, or if he won't accept help than he should go to jail for a long time.
  • 6 0
Crazy drunk, if a 200 pound man drinks 22 beers in 3 hours he will blow .36.

The problem with drinking is that once you get to a certain point you've lost all judgement.

Is it possible the people here complaining on whether this is relevant news or not. Haven't had their lives impacted by drinking driving? Hence the complaints?

Well, I have... multiple times. Let's just say after the ninth funeral I've stopped going. Drinking and driving IS NEWS! It's not a ooops I made a mistake and got caught. Its I'm a stupid human who makes selfish life choices. That can seriously alter others lives in many ways.

It's definitely worth shaming a idiot who chooses to drive while clearly intoxicated. If your a person that is in the public eye and has influence apon others. Than it's even more shameful. What a peice of garbage Rennie is. All respect lost.

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!
  • 12 3
Or they are alcoholics themselves and just not willing to admit it's a bigger problem than they think it is.
  • 6 1
@Patsplit: very likely. It is quite disappointing how many are down playing the issue and saying it isn't relevant news. There is no excuse (like he's an alcoholic or it's an addiction so therefore it isn't our business) to make the choice to drive while intoxicated. I firmly believe you make a dangerous choice like driving drunk. You deserve all the shame possible. Many would be whistling a diffrent tune if he had injured or killed others or himself.

  • 29 12
Wow, the amount of triggered comments on this article is staggering. How dare PB report relevant news about a cyclist? I wonder if PB readers ever look at general sports news websites? f*cking half the news is about what the athletes are doing when they're _not_ being professional athletes...
  • 8 6
Not sure what sports news websites you're looking at. The other mountainbike websites I'm looking at is enduro-mtb.com and eskapee.com. It is pretty much on point though you could argue eskapee isn't exactly about news. For BMX I read fatbmx.com. It has more news but still is pretty much 100% about different disciplines of BMX, events, components and racing.
  • 6 4
@vinay: I'm gonna check out eskapee. I'm looking for other mtb sites to browse. Other than feeling that they serve the advertisers I'm tired of the yearly condescending articles when pb go over to Asia to laugh at the products on show.

I don't what it's like to be a bike "journalist". I work in a different field and find satisfaction that I have helped local communities and the marine ecosystems that they depend on.
  • 4 0
@vinay: I’m talking about the wide world of sports outside our MTB sphere. Do you think when another professional athlete has a run in with the law ESPN and such sites think: “gosh that’s got nothing to do with the sport they participate in, so it’s not relevant to report on.”?
  • 6 6
@Bike078: I do agree with you that I've been guilty of approving some snarky coverage at trade shows in the past. We were just discussing in our team meeting that we're not about that this year at Taipei show.

Still going to make fun of the Eurobike fashion show though. Smile
  • 2 1
@Bike078: Eskapee.com is great! It is all own content, no press releases, collections of social media posts etc. You'll find some top articles and photography from people like Danielle Baker, Harookz etc. James McKnight (from Misspent Summers who also makes the Deathgrip book, Hurly Burly etc) bundles their articles in a book called Anthology so that you can actually read these in a format that does them justice. There are two Anthology books now. Not sure how Eskapee is doing now though. Last year they had this "Eskapee Collective" program where you'd pitch in 100CAD per year and you get their book and a discount in their shop. I did because I liked to support them but unfortunately this year they canceled that program. I'm not aware of an Anthology 3 book nor have I seen any new articles in 2019. Just like Dirt they also did write advertisement articles (which I'm fine with because it is clear what it is) but apparently it just wasn't enough to make ends meet. I hope they eventually find a way to succeed because yeah, they make for a great read. What they have on there right now though should keep you entertained for a good while.

@ScandiumRider : Sorry, I'm not familiar with ESPN. BMX technically isn't MTB so fatbmx.com is outside the MTB sphere, though only slightly. Irmo Keizer who typically contributes to coverage of XC type events here on PB used to have a more general sports website covering MTB, skate, surf and snow sports (adrenalinsports.nl). They still stuck to the sports side of the athletes. For even more general news I just read the regular news websites. Sure if a gymnastics athlete has been caught using cocaine it is being mentioned as it is the reason he's being excluded from competition. But you've found websites that cover sports in general and also delve into their unrelated personal lives? Are you sure you aren't looking at sports-celebrity-glamour-gossip websites instead? And, did the mention that Rennie was caught driving after drinking?

@brianpark : I think Vernon Felton was onto something when he was exploring having his own branded bike being made. It may be the very point of a trade show like that.

@brianpark: Looking forwards to it then. The hashtag sounds like you're working on a mad fatbike but I'm no hashtag expert Wink .

Just to put my comments in context, I always only comment on what you write on do, not on who you are so don't take my criticism personally. It is probably pretty clear that I don't like this article and our criteria for what news should be shared with millions and what shouldn't are different (and there is a huge middle ground where it is fine to either publish it or not). So I'm not going to beat that horse. I trust there is some good stuff coming up. If you're going to have your best articles bundled and published in print my Misspent Summers, I hereby place my order Smile .

I've sort of sat here and stewed on this, and I get it. Clearly Nathan Rennie has fallen from grace...and it's just crappy to see. I'm somewhat of an empathetic people person and it stinks to see people hit a low.

But, coming from the other side - drinking and driving definitely doesn't deserve to be ignored. Rennie was a bad actor here. And if you chose to do it, you should expect some humiliation. Initially I felt bad for him (assuming he's an addict), but I would feel much worse for anyone who he could potentially have harmed.
  • 10 10
I understand getting a DUI is not cool at all but this going too far. If someone was actually harmed then that's a different story.
  • 12 3
@B650wagon: I don't know. I think waiting until someone gets hurt before you get out in front of the issue is too little too late. I guess for many, that is the point.

I am somewhat ambivalent about it being posted here at this point. But I can see the side of those who see some benefit in it.

I hope Rennie gets his shit together and looks after his addiction for his own sake and everyone else around him.

  • 2 2
@privateer-wbc: were all human and make mistakes.. would you like all your faults / mess ups posted everywhere for all to see? There is a massive spike in suicides since social media has became so main stream. I’m not sure when the world decided thier judgment on someone’s short comings became so important. When you get a dui you get severely punished / fined. The judicial system handles it. It’s not a pinkbike news story. Half the people reading this are probably driving thier car st the same time. I’m here for bike stuff not to judge someone’s short comings.
  • 3 1
@utley06: Some will say that you are right, and we should stay out of Rennies business - don't kick a man while he's down. Others will say that you lose your right to privacy and people staying out of your business the moment you put other people's lives in jeopardy - you made your bed, now sleep in it.

I'm not about to tell you who's right. I can see both sides. Some people say you shouldn't do things you wouldn't want plastered all over the front page of your local paper - or Pinkbike. Those are probably wise words to (try to) live by.

It appears that Steve peat's dog doesn't feel good at a moment and has difficulty to shit properly. The PBDHC (PinkBike Dog HelpCenter) sent his best vet @marklevy to Sheffield to inspect the poor animal. On ce arrived, the dog had disappeared. Police officers guess that the dog had seen the vet coming with his linkage fork equipped mtb and he ran for his life. Officers forced Levy to mount a decent fork on his bike which after the dog came back, miracle!

Not surprised with the amount of boozing going in here. Everywhere is just beer drinking, it's actually glorified in PB and Bike Festivals. There are more and more beer booths and beer related bicycle components on bikes these days. Bottle openers, growler holders, beer themed bikes...the list goes on!

How would this not be relevant? (I'm not asking btw, just surprised some people think it's not relevant...). Whether he's a current or past athlete, he's an idol to many, we think of him and his accomplishments. But it's never only about their riding results, it's also about them, who they are, how they handle successes or set backs, which athlete is it that we relate to etc. I don't want to look up to him only thinking of his great career, I want to be aware of the kind of decisions he made and how I now think of him... It's different, as it should be. They are known and followed by many, it's a simple responsibility for an athlete to conduct well and set the right example. The fact that you are no longer under the races spotlight doesn't mean you can set a foolish example for the people that still follow you. Drinking and driving is a BIG deal, people! And it needs to become a bigger deal for most people thinking they can get away with it. Not okay. Simple as that. Hearing of drinking and driving from a random individual driver isn't good, but isn't going to make you reflect the way it makes you reflect when you know the person and thought you could relate to them. I'm thankful it's not going under the radar and making more awareness for the drinking and driving issues of this world. Peace! (PS I'm jet-lagged sorry for the novel) Big Grin

ARE YOU PINKBIKERS FVCKING ALL DRUNK OR PLAIN KIDDING EVERYONE?

Nathan blew 0.35% of alcohol. In every smaller country with ZERO limit he would be immediately in evening news, arrested by police and considered of committing a crime. What is here to advocate for him? It absolutely doesn't matter whether he's having some private problems, health problems or anything. 0.35% of blood soaked in alcohol is crazy fvcking amount. You don't get it by drinking couple of those ozzy beers.

Not sure if anyone else has commented this but: Pinkbike didn't choose to ignore Missy Giove's run in with the law a few years back, and by the same logic that some of your are using here, that isn't 'mountain bike news' either'.

The guy is a really well known mountain biker. This is related to MTB.
  • 6 0
Rennie is a two-time criminal. He didn't just make a . He broke the same law twice. I am surprised that so many people think it is a good idea to hide that fact under the guise of "poor Rennie" or "protect his privacy" or "this is not a news site." I don't recall people making this argument when we talked about giove's drug trafficking offenses. Frankly, public shaming may be the best thing to counter drunk driving. It will make it more likely that Rennie actually receives the help for alcoholism he requires.

I have to wonder if this has been a pretty well known thing by those in and around the scene for awhile and not having them on hand wasn’t an oversight. If alcohol was introduced nowadays for legalization, it wouldn't stand a chance in hell. What other substance which is legal causes so many deaths, domestic abuse charges, incarcerations? Someday society will wake up and see that alcohol is legal only for corporate profits and Lawyer employment and to keep our jails pumping with addicts. Put down the bottle and pick up a joint people.

To all of the folks complaining that this is "not mountain bike related" (even though it's about a riding icon), you may want to read a few more articles to familiarize yourself with what goes on in the comments sections of this website.

I just read the update about the bike store thieves in California getting caught, and the poor employee who tried to stop them only to get badly injured. The comments section quickly turned into a comparison of health care systems among various countries. PB readers took a story that was about bikes and turned into a debate that was not bike related at all. This is far from the first time this has happened on PB.

If readers are going to do this in the comments, how can anyone complain about PB reposting an already published news
story about someone who is very much a part of mountain bike culture?
  • 15 13
I'm pretty disappointed with PB posting this, having dealt with a few alcoholics over the years, friends and family who are very close to me, even thought what he has done is obviously wrong, we need to offer support and advice, shaming him here on PB is not what he needs. PB you can say it's your duty to post any bike related news, however you guys are main stream bicycle media and you choose to post this, knowing very well it might cause further pain to Nathan.
  • 14 7
We are supposed to be concerned that this “might cause further pain to Nathan”??
I don’t get that. I get it appears to be an addiction - but now this is the second time he’s been caught - are we to think he’s only done it twice and been cause both times? Come on, it’s been many times - and yet we’re worry about causing him further pain? Obviously ZERO regard for other humans. Like many have said - if an innocent suffered because of his actions, I would feel bad for them!!! I don’t worry about causing someone with such little regard for others, caught several times (and by law of averages - has done this many many times). I don’t worry about causing him more pain.
  • 6 7
@kgbdhbiker: my comment was directed at PB and not anyone in the comments, I don't really care how you feel, I was trying to point out to PB that clickbait articles like this can cause further harm, and is that really what we want for the mountain bike community.
  • 16 3
@deadbmx how does this cause further harm... for the mountain bike community?
I just don’t get it. Famous/pro athletes/celebrities - this isn’t PB doing anything wrong. These celebrities or athletes - they are role models, some icons, many held in high regard by young and old alike. It’s not a PB reporting issue, media in all spirts do it. Tiger Woods crashing a car drunk fleeing from his GF or whatever, NHL players charged with Spousal Battery, NFL players... should we ignore it because they were once champions and poor them - they’re famours and never any privacy. Joe Blow ‘blows’ 7 times over the limit or whatever it was - it’d be reported in the local news, tv, newspapers. It’d be reported in NFL weekly and NHL.com (and has been), MLB, whatever. This IS news, albeit bad. And no, zero concern from me that this might make it worse for NR. Maybe, maybe - it’ll snap him into saying “f@ck did I screw up again - and a community (MTB) that supported me, damn I’m so embarrassed. Let’s fix my problems”. Simplistic for sure, stupid sounding - yep. But that’s a positive outcome for Nathan AND the mtb community he is in. (Reports he coaches and was raising money last year for cancer - all great).
It is news. It is real. Our little bubble isn’t perfect and pretty always... and I thank PB for bringing light to this, maybe it’ll help someone!!!! Maybe someone will remember the comments from people with hard stories of lost ones from drunk drivers on here. Maybe something will jog their memory as they stumble to the car in a drunken stupor - and just maybe they’ll leave the car and get home another way... that’s a big ‘rainbow and unicorn’ dream I just described - but maybe one person can be saved because of this.
Hopefully Mr Rennie gets better.
I’m glad PB doesn’t shy away from the ‘dark stuff’.

Well said. Part of respecting someone for their achievements should come with support for them when their down and out. If this episode was due to his mental well-being and not just a one-off sloppy night then he does need our help. So while this event does need to be public, so does our offer of support for him and his family. Our aim should be prevention which you can be damn sure won’t happen if all we do is sling shit at each other.

 .362 is he still alive??
  • 13 13
@mikekazimer Its the act of publicizing this further that seems to be in such poor taste. While I understand that he had a huge influence in his time, this 70+ word post is hardly news. He's not relevant to what I'd guess is roughly 80% of your readers here. What gives? Wheres the story? Anyone here wanna raise there hands if they f*cked up and got a DUI? Putting him on blast for a bit of a weak story I think man.

Pretty F’ed up. He was hammered, not cool

Substance abuse news not mtb news.
  • 5 1
How'd his girlfriend get home from the airport?
  • 3 0
I imagine that she didn't go home - she got to spend her night arranging bail for him, while visiting him in jail.
  • 4 0
Well that news set off a wholePB comments shit storm! Didn't it?

Pinkbike proving their worth to MTB. Truly bottom feeding pricks. Nathan rode on Salt2Snow across Australia with Paul Begg and I late last year. It took PinkBike 2 months (after the trip) to get back to me about any form of coverage to showcase the hard work fundraising for cancer research. What's newsworthy on this site? Positives or negatives? Pinkbike only brings one the table.
  • 13 5
I'm sorry that I didn't respond to you about Salt2Snow in time. I did apologize and say that I'd like to help if there's an opportunity... As you can imagine we get an insane number of emails and I'm sorry to say some of them do fall through the cracks.

As for positives vs negatives, if you look at the homepage right now we've got TONS of bike checks, reviews, event reports, analysis, videos, destination pieces, and more. I'm stoked that 90% of the stuff we put out celebrates MTB and is super positive, but we do also have a job to do by reporting on stuff like this.
  • 4 5
 @brianpark: Thanks for the apology.

On the topic at hand, contacting Nathan to hear his story should be the first point of call. Maybe showcasing his wrongs alongside the work he's doing to make amends (prior to and after the DUI) and a new life may have been more applicable than headlines and out of context news cut and pasted from a news source hell bent on traffic over truth. Not only that, but a lot more inspiring to others that may find themselves somewhere that's as destructive in their life. I'm not condoning drink driving for a second, I've been hit by two DUI drivers in my time, but this kind of 'journalism' can be just as destructive to life as the offence itself.

That's responsibility in journalism. If there is such a thing anymore.

With all the coin from your part of the hemisphere and now ours in Australia, there's no real budget issue. You've taken so much money from the small industry/scene here as it is, it's the least that could be done.
  • 2 2
@Holmes2020: it'd be great to do a story on Nathan and what he's doing in the future—he was a childhood hero of mine, and I think we all believe in redemption.
  • 3 0
He got off easy for a second offense, no jail time or community service?
  • 4 4
PB developers disabled "props", and are now throwing "props already given" error messages when none were given - you guys have been doing some shady shit lately. Dolla dolla bills yawlll

lLke it or not, today's media platforms (anyone can create and push one) we are in mode of full transparency. Compounding this, like it or not, athletes' respective behaviors on the field, off the field, on the track, off the track -- or behind the wheel of a potentially deadly weapon; their performances are relevant to today's audiences.

I used to root for Tom Brady, an undisputed champion, sports hero, and a specimen of athletic ability. Then, I found out he supports Trump. Yeah, he can throw a football, but compliance with bigotry and callousness shifts my perception of him greatly; he is no one to look up to.

There is however a striking difference here -- Tom Brad has every goddamn advantage in the world re: opportunity to grow and to be a better person. He is inundated with wealth, power, fame, and resulting opportunity. Brady has further made a _choice_ to be a monger of fear. Renne clearly has a disease, one that has affected many close to me, alcoholism. He needs help. If Renne holds onto anything dear that could help him to conquer his demons it is surely his hands-down legend status. Being called out on PB is one way to help him realize that and recover.

Sometimes the truth sucks. It always hurts to witness the demonstrated mortality of our heroes, but to witness is to acknowledge, and that's always the first step.

 What utter bull5h1t!
  • 4 1
@BDKR: would you still say that if he had murdered someone you cared about before being cited? He's a public figure, a name to our sport, and that comes with accountability, period. If a brief public shame has even the slightest chance of him not repeating this behavior and murdering someone with his vehicle, it's worth it ten fold.
  • 1 2
@plxmtb: What is BS is the part above about Tom Brady and his advantage via opportunity. If we follow that logic then I am an anomaly. How else do you explain that I'm black, but have managed to live on 3 continents and visit far more (not in the military), have 5 cars and 3 mountain bikes, owned 20 different guitars, make 6 figures and have no real debt?

But to hear you tell it, I MUST BE LYING because my parents divorced when I was young, filed for bankruptcy and lost a house so we were poor, and we are black.

By spreading this view point you completely ignore the difficult, but far more powerful balance between environment, nurture, and temperament. Instead, this view irons all people out into the same with the only differences from one to another being a measure of affluence during upbringing.

It's a flawed and dangerous view.
  • 1 0
@BDKR: I think I poorly framed that differentiation, I'm happy to clarify. I meant to illustrate the difference between people who make poor decisions for a wealth of reasons that are entirely their own fault, compared to those that have demonstrated diseases that are entirely out of their control.

That is, alcoholics (potentially Renne) are proven to be genetically predisposed to the condition. a*sholes (like Brady) are such by their own choice.

That said, I do think PB could have demonstrated more class (less TMZ-like) with their reporting; to acknowledge his struggle and by some means, offer him support in some way, whilst facing the music.
  • 1 0
Oh well.... I could've responded differently too! :-)
  • 3 0
Yeah but can he drink 52 beers on a single plane flight?
  • 4 5
PB has gotten real good at driving division in the MTB scene!
I'm not trying to say drunk driving is OK, and I'm really NOT into public shaming. Next PB will be running the whole "social credit" system (like China) which is just a soft form to tyranny.

Both sides of this argument are right, but somebody needs to focus on the underlying issue! How it's viewed by all of us as a society! How much 5hit do we see here on PB conflating biking, drinking, and general good times? So when someone starts biking, drinking, and having a good time then develops an addiction we make a pariah of that person? We're all complicit in setting a trap that many get caught up in. And the good majority of us have no clue how addiction affects the decision process. No clue how one becomes a slave to the chemical processes that take hold.

So as someone that's lost a brother to addiction and the follow on behaviors AND lost friends to drunk driving AND worked in law enforcement so I could see many of these affected up close and personal AND spent a good deal of time in a relationship with someone with a PHD in Psychology, I'll say both sides of this argument are right. But as usual the best plan of action is somewhere in the middle.

For reference, 0.362 is very very high. He was smashed.
  • 1 0
What a ridiculous thing to post about. Is this from pink bikes new TMZ department?
  • 2 0
He was reportedly trying to manual his car

Question: Is it true that if you have a DUI on your record that you are banned from entering Canada?
  • 1 0
 usually.
  • 10 9
Nah TMZ always uses alliteration...Wait! Huh?
  • 17 16
Yea I dont think this is relevant
  • 9 8
 Pinkbike= clickbait facebook now. RIP
  • 4 1
How is this clickbait!? The article clearly aligned with the title. If you don't have an interest in the story don't click. If it teased one thing and focused on another you would be correct.
  • 1 3
 @aquanut:
Ok fine I stand corrected. But please dont try to tell me this is relevant to mountain biking in anyway. This is purely a trash article to get clicks
  • 5 8
Poor form Pinkbike - you're better than this. Brave enough to post this, but not brave enough to post an article encouraging discussion about things that matter like Trans Women in racing. Rennie is an absolute legend, and we all make poor choices.
  • 2 5
Not relevant to my escape from putting packages in boxes all day long. Wait, neither is me complaining about my job. Please focus on the fun of biking PINKBIKE and f*** the news about personal choice and consequence. Leave that to the tabloids that I read while on the s****** at work on the clock not packing boxes (most of the day long).
  • 1 0
Well will just have too use his bike more now?
  • 3 2
Don't make Pinkbike the the new TMZ
  • 4 6
This isn’t bike news, I’ve had a DUI and it doesnt take someone posting it on the Internet for you to understand that you’ve f’ed up. This is gossip / invading someone’s personal life, take it down.
  • 1 4
Come on we've all done it,(and had the driving ban) it's not big or clever and he will pay the penalty give the bloke a break, no need to post this article, fair enough he's an MTB'er but let's not air his dirty laundry unnecessarily.
  • 2 3
@brianpark I don't go to PinkBike for this kind of news. This is why I'm not on facebook anymore. 2 years facebook sober. Public shaming has consequences.
