Must Watch: Tom Van Steenbergen Hits 3 World Firsts in 'Wild West'

Sep 2, 2020
by Five Ten

Tom Van Steenbergen unleashes an onslaught of creativity both on and off the bike in his most important project to date ‘Wild West’. From unique features to first time tricks, Tom’s creative freedom was let loose like never before. The end result is 2 and a half minutes of Tom’s most ambitious freeride and slopestyle riding to date.

Filmed in Oliver, BC, “Wild West’ is visual representation of Tom’s personality on and off the bike, brought to life by director Calvin Huth. Over a 6 week period of building, testing and experimenting with multiple world firsts tricks, ‘Wild West’ leaves nothing on the table.

Having first met in Whistler shooting for dirt diaries, Calvin and Tom had an instant rapport and have sort to work together ever since. ‘Wild West’ is a coming together of their creativity like never before.

“I put everything I had into this project. adidas 5.10 gave me the freedom to make the project I wanted to make and the time I needed to push my riding in the way I knew I could. I’ve put it all out there in ‘Wild West’ and hope that it gets people excited to ride” – Tom Van Steenbergen

That was like the perfect combo for me: Unreal riding showcasing things I'd not seen before, artistic film-making where the art was there to enhance the riding rather than the other way round, multi shots that showcased the skill without repetition, action that's on beat to the music (those on beat snaking turns were sublime), exceptional technical prowess in the film-making that I didn't notice at all while watching the first few times and cuts that controlled the tempo without making me feel sick.

Awesome job all involved, not sure where you go from here!

 on the moon?

@housem8d: Now that's an idea... imagine Rampage in low gravity...
  • 9 0
Agreed! I am usually bummed on modern production, way to much emphasis on the production itself with overdone cuts, zooms, and slowmo to the point where you cant just see the rider hit a fucking line or jump without having a seizure. This was a perfect blend.
  • 1 0
Also the edit was dedicated to Jordie Lunn... with that song "Let the ghosts sing", it was bit spiritual.
  • 144 2
Overshot by a mile and a half, holy crap. Nice work Calvin, digging the colour shenanigans—now you’ve got me wondering about shooting infra red!
  • 38 0
Loved the “squork” on the landing. Just casually cruising the jump...
  • 31 1
Just like riding, there's flow in editing, and you nailed it! The perfect amount of synchronous cuts. Love this.
  • 19 2
@rrolly: Yup...this edit nailed it! Like I like Semenuks edits and all but this was waaaaay more exciting to watch!
Sick riding as always from Tom...looks like he's dialed right now.

Man, now I really can’t wait for Rampage

Oops. Bummer, just saw the next headline. Sucks

@tbmaddux: As a 59 year old that started riding in the mountains before there was even a bmx bike I have been very lucky to follow the development of the sport since the beginning.
The stuff that the young guys are doing is close to unbelievable.

@rrolly: I really liked the color change but I'd be okay with 50% less non riding edits.

@Robertoregency: they help build tension imo. I thought there was a good balance here.

Nothing about this was not rad.

So true, it's not often you can say "overshot by a mile" and really mean it!

That was insane boys!! Such sick riding and loved the infrared footage too.

I was wondering how this particular rendering was made. I will go to bed slightly less stupid tonight.

Looks like a special post production color effect. In i.r. the brake disc would shine bright white and sky wouldn't be blue.
  • 1 0
@styleguide: is it UV maybe? I thought I remembered seeing some UV photography a while ago that looked like that, but maybe my memory is playing tricks.
  • 2 0
@smartfartbart: i think there's something like 'white balance' or green desaturation... maybe a custom white balance setting

I was guessing colour-inverted black and white, with the blue sky left the same

Semenuk makes awesome videos bit there's just something that doesn't make them quite exceptional (although i haven't watched all of them so if there's any that would prove me wrong please direct me there, we all love good filmwork)

@Bikerdude137: I disagree. To be honest, i don't think you could compare the two. The concept and idea is so differant behind the vision of each. Your comparing apples to oranges.
  • 1 4
@alexvos: are there any other ones i should watch? For me personally i like beautiful idiot because it tells a story whereas these others just showcase riding, i would gladly change my opinion if i see something better (also i forgot about rythym)
My opinion isn't unwavering so you don't have to act like it is...

It’s not but Toms was gnar AF. That was huge. Mike Metzger did the first that I’m aware of in 05 I think? There’s a video just google mike metzger drop.

@parisgore: That was mental by Mike!

Yeah, probably as Tom bunny hopped off he got a slight more pop which just made it look even more steeze and big.
  • 6 0
@learningcycles: haha yea progression has changed for sure, Metzgers was pretty gnar back in the day for what it was but yea not the steeze or extension that Tom had! I found the video, looks like it was 2009. Pretty heavy move haha. www.pinkbike.com/video/60846

 off topic rant: ON>
Adidas, if you are reading this, you are doing it wrong! You bought two endemic mtb brands: Five Ten and Troy Lee. Fine!
But why is your ego so big so you feel you need to put your logo everywhere on these products? why are you diluting these brands? I'm sure you could make shoes by yourself. It's like pissing on your toys, you bought something cool but you are tampering with it's "core-ness" until it's not cool anymore!
Remember Trek did that already with Fisher, Klein, Bontrager, etc. Instead of adding variety to your portfolio, you are going to create redundancy until there is no value left.
FYI, I don't want to buy anything with your logo on it. I want to believe my money supports the mtb community instead of a German corporation.
off topic rant: OFF>
  • 26 2
They definitely do not own Troy Lee, they have done a brand collaboration with TLD on some shoes and apparel which arguably in this instance supported the TLD brand through wider brand awareness in the mainstream and access to new innovation.

As for removing the ‘coreness’ from the brand, why don’t you replace that with increased investment into athletes, product development and salaries to enable the sport beyond it’s ‘core’ limitations that it rightly deserves.

The verdict will always be out and you will sit on one side of the fence or the other. But the opportunities it has presented are far reaching.
  • 26 2
I can say this; you can keep that stick up your ass about what's core and cool and what isn't, but don't ask for video edits like Tom's to keep dropping. They take $$$ and there's a lot of good opportunities for the bike industry and the athletes who depend on it if you can get over a little logo.

Serious question: do you also rant about Red Bull, Monster and Rock Star making their athletes wear stupid hats with big logos everywhere?
  • 11 5
I agree, they are diluting 5 10 street cred.
  • 47 0
@ColquhounerHooner: My street cred is so diluted they use it as a homeopathic remedy.

  • 8 0
@workwithstudios: maybe it's the slav in me speaking, but the TLD/Adidas collab was super sweet and exactly the kind of exposure mtb world would benefit from.
  • 5 0
@BreakLikeTheWind: My street cred is so diluted, I actually owe the street ,with interest.
  • 1 0

 @mtbmaniatv: THIS!
quality down and prices up; why couldn't you be happy with selling me one pair of $100 shoes each year? Now I'm exploring different brands and you'll get me to buy zero pairs of $150+ shoes...
  • 1 0
 My Kestrels have improved
Sorry not sorry. Also..$$ makes athletes go round/push product development and so on..
  • 3 0
 @yannickbisson @workwithstudios

I think you are naive to think Adidas is here to invest in athletes and product development, they are here to harvest Five Ten long time investment in the sport. Adidas is not charity!
Do you really think Troy Leed need mainstream attention, their market is nothing mainstream, Grandma is not going to wear a moto kit anytime soon.
I'm pretty sure Adidas is not spending more on Five Ten Marketing then their expected ROI.
The same dollars you spent on five ten could still promote athletes if it was a mtb owned company. The company know is probably 5% more efficient and generates 10% more to feed the bloated fat of a corporation

@Rudy2455 :
and yes I also complain about this unhealthy energy drinks company supporting/using the sport. Sure they do an amazing work but don't believe they are charities, they are seeing some ROI if they keep investing. I'd rather the sport to be supported by endemic entity such as SRAM, Specialized and why not your national federation!
It's nice to have our 1000 mtb brands ecosystem but it brings problems such as a revenue spread into too many players so none is enough profitable to support the sport growth. That is true for bike brands but was not for MTB shoes, Five Ten was one the main player and now it's being blood sucked by Adidas vampires

Do you guys have an example of a successful brand acquisition in the mtb world? I can just recall examples that involve the slow death of this given brand.
  • 1 0
@roma258: I'm not saying the product sucks but could you develop what kind of benefit you see in this collab. I only see Adidas cross-promoting itself. toward the MTB niche, I don't think TLD has much to gain outside of the mtb/moto world.
  • 2 0
@workwithstudios: I'm genuinely interested in your perspective but could you develop about which improvement you've seen, what are the opportunities for the sport or even the brand?

I can understand how a company could gain in manufacturing, R&D, distribution but it probably pays for that its new overlord and there is also some ineffectiveness and waste of money being part of a fat corporation.

Following Five Ten acquisition, I haven't seen 5.10 being better, cheaper, and developing new products for road cycling, running, skiing, etc. At the opposite, I can see new brands getting some traction (RC, Afton, etc) on a market Five Ten use to dominate.
  • 1 0
@BreakLikeTheWind: that's my problem too, was relying on 510 for any sherrick of cred, now I got zip.
  • 2 0
 @workwithstudios:
Are you somewhat new to the sport?
If so let me enlighten you with some history.
There is a shoe called the Addidas Hematoma. It was THE DH and freeride shoe of choice here in Utah back in the day. It was worn by all the local pros including a handful that were invited to the first ever Redbull Rampage. 5ten was in its infancy back then. It might actually be said Addidas has more credibility than 5 ten for helping progress riders back in the day.
So be nice.
See you learn something everyday.
Cheers.
  • 1 0
That be nice was directed @max2max BTW
  • 1 0
@mtnbikeUT: Thanks for sharing about the Hematoma but I'm sure you know what you are saying doesn't make any sense. Bender used to wear moto boots back in the days, it doesn't make moto boots more "core" mtb.
Sorry if what I feel about Adidas and corporation feasting on the Mtb culture makes you uncomfortable but Mtb is great but there are many issues especially in the US, the sport is not largely accessible and inclusive, racers can't make a living, there is no path to foster talents, national federation is a joke..and i could go on.

BTW, I'm OG AF
  • 3 0
 @max2max
LOL. I love Bender. That guy is the best kind of kook out there.
Perhaps we should try moto boots. Maybe Bender was on to something. He is however a weird example. He is core in the purest sense. He will ride no matter what. Cool or not cool. Work boots, Moto boots doesn’t matter to him it seems. For him bikes are green eggs and ham. He will do it in a box, with a fox, on a train and in the rain. His last video with Sage Cattabriga-Alosa proves this. Unfortunately if we were all like him I am not sure our sport would survive.
If you must direct your frustrations somewhere call out the ones who sold their companies to the corporate overlords. They are the ones who sold us out.
Or let’s get together as fellow riders and try to get the brands like Addidas to be more involved. If they are willing to help support Tom maybe they will support others. Maybe if we ask nice they will pick up the tab on more cool stuff like this seriously cool video Tom and Calvin just made.
IDK. I do fail to see how you putting me in my place helped anyone. I liked the Addidas hematoma. As a young poor rider they were the shoes of my hero’s, and I wished I could own them. Now I am old and I can buy whatever shoe I want and I wear 5 Tens. I give them my money, they give me shoes and cool video edits of Tom. So far it’s working out for me. Sorry you feel differently.

He landed that front flip sooooooooooooooooooo smoothly. Actually made that trick look good. So hard to land those without slamming down hard. Next he will front flip to manual.....
  • 5 0
Yea that was crazy. Even "smooth" front flips usually look pretty harsh just because if the physics involved. To do one that big and that smooth is crazy.
  • 1 3
front flip to manny is basically impossible.

Semenuk's videographer and editor should take note on how to make a proper edit. Thank god there wasn't any of this shaky came jump cut footage
  • 8 0
To be fair most of his stuff is amazing as well, it's really just that last edit that was ridiculous with the over the top "stylistic choices"
  • 11 0
Still can't wrap my head around the fact that the Van Steenbergen brothers are sponsored by Hyper which as far as I can tell, primarily make bikes sold at Wal-Mart.
  • 7 0
pretty sweet that I can become capable of all these tricks, buy my bikes at the big W *and* pick up toothpaste and paper towel on rollback all in one trip!
  • 4 0
I was thinking the same thing. I suppose their actual bikes are handbuilt by another major brand, but I just don't get the "why"?
It's not like anybody that knows who the VanSteezeburgen boys are, is going out looking to buy a Hyper at Mall-Mart. I absolutely appreciate that Hyper has these guys on the payroll, I just don't know where it's going. If the brand steps up and makes true LBS quality bikes, then great, it makes sense. Until then, I just don't get it. Whatever it is, keep paying the boys, they deserve it.
  • 1 0
@sledMXer: yea I’ve always wondered about this too. They sell some high end BMX stuff and sponsor some top riders but the mountain bike thing has always been a little confusing.

So what were the three worlds firsts
1- Nose manny to fronty (upbox)
2- regular manual to backflip (upbox)
3-???

I am assuming worlds longest frontflip on a MTB? That fronty was nuts...
  • 11 0
 3. first frontflip with no head bob on landing

I was wondering this too. Thought it might have been the flat drop superman but seems that's already been done. Not sure what else it would be.

@adoknjas: but the benivaguado dude just threw a 22 meter fronty which is also damn huge so idk.

Not putting a whip in an edit. (Or if there was one I successfully blanked it from my mind)

I'm getting desensitized to good riding in films and good filming in general because of all the content out there, but this is undeniably soo badass.

This is how I feel and think I look when doing small jumps and drops. And then I watch the footage and press "Delete"...

One of the best edits ever done. I agree with you all. But the riding level is beyond this planet. Watching this makes me feel like I just took my training wheels off!! Damn some people are soooooo talented and so skilled. Keep up the content like this.

Absolutely awesome! Infrared, the riding, the edit. Mint!

I love a video that when you watch it you think... I couldnt land any of those features. 2020 sees the birth of TVS. Crankworks series to this... What a video, insanely good.

So sick! What were the three worlds first? Front flip and back flip manuals off the on off and?

I used to really like TVS and he does throw down! After his part in accomplice I'm not sure. Listening to him and Nell talk about Zink made my ears bleed. I'm like jeez I hope those lines weren't scripted. People should really leave the talking out of action Sports flicks. It just reminds me of T Rice in the 4th phase. Less bro talky talky more shreddy shreddy.

Unpopular opinion, but to me it was over edited. I would rather watch it in raw with normal colors and with less story. Riding was sick, no doubt.
  • 3 0
Thats cool but you have have to take into account that these riders (and filmers) are trying to differentiate themselves too. Tom is a great rider but there are a whole bunch of guys on that level putting out content. If they all made films of just raw riding all these edits would be the same thing. They'd still be cool to watch but for the riders and filmers there would be no way to stand out.
  • 1 0
@sino428: Totally agree. I still think you can do a nice raw movie without being like second Semenuk. And maybe they will get there or somewhere else and it will be great. I'm sure they are already thinking about how to make it better.
  • 2 0
100% agree the riding needs to take centre stage not the artsy shots
