Tom Van Steenbergen unleashes an onslaught of creativity both on and off the bike in his most important project to date ‘Wild West’. From unique features to first time tricks, Tom’s creative freedom was let loose like never before. The end result is 2 and a half minutes of Tom’s most ambitious freeride and slopestyle riding to date. Filmed in Oliver, BC, “Wild West’ is visual representation of Tom’s personality on and off the bike, brought to life by director Calvin Huth. Over a 6 week period of building, testing and experimenting with multiple world firsts tricks, ‘Wild West’ leaves nothing on the table.
Having first met in Whistler shooting for dirt diaries, Calvin and Tom had an instant rapport and have sort to work together ever since. ‘Wild West’ is a coming together of their creativity like never before.
“I put everything I had into this project. adidas 5.10 gave me the freedom to make the project I wanted to make and the time I needed to push my riding in the way I knew I could. I’ve put it all out there in ‘Wild West’ and hope that it gets people excited to ride” –

Awesome job all involved, not sure where you go from here!
Sick riding as always from Tom...looks like he's dialed right now.
Oops. Bummer, just saw the next headline. Sucks
The stuff that the young guys are doing is close to unbelievable.
Chhers
Semenuk makes awesome videos bit there's just something that doesn't make them quite exceptional (although i haven't watched all of them so if there's any that would prove me wrong please direct me there, we all love good filmwork)
My opinion isn't unwavering so you don't have to act like it is...
It’s not but Toms was gnar AF. That was huge. Mike Metzger did the first that I’m aware of in 05 I think? There’s a video just google mike metzger drop.

Yeah, probably as Tom bunny hopped off he got a slight more pop which just made it look even more steeze and big.
MY that is mental.
Adidas, if you are reading this, you are doing it wrong! You bought two endemic mtb brands: Five Ten and Troy Lee. Fine!
But why is your ego so big so you feel you need to put your logo everywhere on these products? why are you diluting these brands? I'm sure you could make shoes by yourself. It's like pissing on your toys, you bought something cool but you are tampering with it's "core-ness" until it's not cool anymore!
Remember Trek did that already with Fisher, Klein, Bontrager, etc. Instead of adding variety to your portfolio, you are going to create redundancy until there is no value left.
FYI, I don't want to buy anything with your logo on it. I want to believe my money supports the mtb community instead of a German corporation.
off topic rant: OFF>
As for removing the ‘coreness’ from the brand, why don’t you replace that with increased investment into athletes, product development and salaries to enable the sport beyond it’s ‘core’ limitations that it rightly deserves.
The verdict will always be out and you will sit on one side of the fence or the other. But the opportunities it has presented are far reaching.
Serious question: do you also rant about Red Bull, Monster and Rock Star making their athletes wear stupid hats with big logos everywhere?
quality down and prices up; why couldn't you be happy with selling me one pair of $100 shoes each year? Now I'm exploring different brands and you'll get me to buy zero pairs of $150+ shoes...
Sorry not sorry. Also..$$ makes athletes go round/push product development and so on..
I think you are naive to think Adidas is here to invest in athletes and product development, they are here to harvest Five Ten long time investment in the sport. Adidas is not charity!
Do you really think Troy Leed need mainstream attention, their market is nothing mainstream, Grandma is not going to wear a moto kit anytime soon.
I'm pretty sure Adidas is not spending more on Five Ten Marketing then their expected ROI.
The same dollars you spent on five ten could still promote athletes if it was a mtb owned company. The company know is probably 5% more efficient and generates 10% more to feed the bloated fat of a corporation
@Rudy2455 :
and yes I also complain about this unhealthy energy drinks company supporting/using the sport. Sure they do an amazing work but don't believe they are charities, they are seeing some ROI if they keep investing. I'd rather the sport to be supported by endemic entity such as SRAM, Specialized and why not your national federation!
It's nice to have our 1000 mtb brands ecosystem but it brings problems such as a revenue spread into too many players so none is enough profitable to support the sport growth. That is true for bike brands but was not for MTB shoes, Five Ten was one the main player and now it's being blood sucked by Adidas vampires
Do you guys have an example of a successful brand acquisition in the mtb world? I can just recall examples that involve the slow death of this given brand.
I can understand how a company could gain in manufacturing, R&D, distribution but it probably pays for that its new overlord and there is also some ineffectiveness and waste of money being part of a fat corporation.
Following Five Ten acquisition, I haven't seen 5.10 being better, cheaper, and developing new products for road cycling, running, skiing, etc. At the opposite, I can see new brands getting some traction (RC, Afton, etc) on a market Five Ten use to dominate.
Are you somewhat new to the sport?
If so let me enlighten you with some history.
There is a shoe called the Addidas Hematoma. It was THE DH and freeride shoe of choice here in Utah back in the day. It was worn by all the local pros including a handful that were invited to the first ever Redbull Rampage. 5ten was in its infancy back then. It might actually be said Addidas has more credibility than 5 ten for helping progress riders back in the day.
So be nice.
See you learn something everyday.
Cheers.
Sorry if what I feel about Adidas and corporation feasting on the Mtb culture makes you uncomfortable but Mtb is great but there are many issues especially in the US, the sport is not largely accessible and inclusive, racers can't make a living, there is no path to foster talents, national federation is a joke..and i could go on.
BTW, I'm OG AF
LOL. I love Bender. That guy is the best kind of kook out there.
Perhaps we should try moto boots. Maybe Bender was on to something. He is however a weird example. He is core in the purest sense. He will ride no matter what. Cool or not cool. Work boots, Moto boots doesn’t matter to him it seems. For him bikes are green eggs and ham. He will do it in a box, with a fox, on a train and in the rain. His last video with Sage Cattabriga-Alosa proves this. Unfortunately if we were all like him I am not sure our sport would survive.
If you must direct your frustrations somewhere call out the ones who sold their companies to the corporate overlords. They are the ones who sold us out.
Or let’s get together as fellow riders and try to get the brands like Addidas to be more involved. If they are willing to help support Tom maybe they will support others. Maybe if we ask nice they will pick up the tab on more cool stuff like this seriously cool video Tom and Calvin just made.
IDK. I do fail to see how you putting me in my place helped anyone. I liked the Addidas hematoma. As a young poor rider they were the shoes of my hero’s, and I wished I could own them. Now I am old and I can buy whatever shoe I want and I wear 5 Tens. I give them my money, they give me shoes and cool video edits of Tom. So far it’s working out for me. Sorry you feel differently.
Sick Riding to honor JL.
It's not like anybody that knows who the VanSteezeburgen boys are, is going out looking to buy a Hyper at Mall-Mart. I absolutely appreciate that Hyper has these guys on the payroll, I just don't know where it's going. If the brand steps up and makes true LBS quality bikes, then great, it makes sense. Until then, I just don't get it. Whatever it is, keep paying the boys, they deserve it.
1- Nose manny to fronty (upbox)
