Maxxis revealed a new DH tire that they’ve been developing with input from Greg Minnaar. We found a couple of the new tires stashed behind Maxxis’ pop-up tents, here at Crankworx.
“This is a tire that came out of some conversations with Greg, after Mont-Sainte-Anne last year,” says Maxxis spokesman, Bobby Brown.
What was Minnaar looking for in a new tire?
“He was really trying to get a tire that would serve as a middle ground between a Minion DHF and a Shorty,” says Brown. “ It’s a little taller than a DHF, but not as tall as a Shorty. It also has a pretty dense knob pattern for better rolling speed.”
The yet-to-be-named Maxxis tire will roll out in both 27.5 and 29-inch, tubeless-ready, 2.5 Wide Trail models.
The new tire can be run front and/or rear. Maxxis expects to bring it to the public in time for the 2018 race season—think early spring.
“We started talking about this tire at Mont-Sainte-Anne 2016 and the entire Syndicate raced on it this year. We’re really stoked with how well it worked on the rocky terrain out there.”
In other Maxxis rubber-related news, Brown noted that both 29 and 27.5 x2.5 Aggressor and High Roller II will be available in late September or early October of this year.
MENTIONS:
@Maxxis
Absolutely. If comes in at a true 2.5 or bigger then it can compete with the Mary. While the Mary has its weaknesses, on very rough, steep courses, its better than the Minions - at least until its knobs tear off.
The DHRII is good as a rear, but in a 2.4" max, its limited by its size on rougher courses. The DHF has more size but lacks straight line braking on the really steep stuff.
Minions do have the clear edge, over the Mary, in offering a Super Tacky for the front, and a 3C for out back. Schwab has only the Vertstar. The anticipated Addix Mary DH has yet to appear, and may end up just disappearing all together.
The Maxxis Shorty has a Mary like pattern, but lacks size.
So, Maxxis, hear this, if you want to beat the Mary, give this tire enough size. Like a 2.5-2.6 coming in at over 1400g, and offer it in a Super Tacky and a 3c.
I know riders on buffed out parks are driving the market, but there are still plenty us hitting the old school chunk that need a bigger, badder Minion.
Wrong.
@MikerJ:
Ya, I would have preferred a 2.5 DHR2 over a 2.4. I wonder why they chose 2.4?
you rolling on 26" too? messing with ya.
good name, they should do it
LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE MAXXIS!!!!
DO IT!! DO IT!! DO IT!!!!!!!!!!
the second THIS tire hits the shelf in a true 2.5-2.6 it will be on my bike!!!
People are going to be riding old 26" bikes for quite a long time, so there's still a parts market for it (albeit a market slowly reducing in size I admit).
30 years of 26" bikes being made and now were to dump our bikes in the trash because of the stupid corporations deciding that THEY want to make more money and f#$k the poor guys.
Saying that, it must suck for people who can't afford to upgrade yet.
Yes he did

Danny Hart wars on Shorty's
can't be like Mary...couldn't stand her. Obviously she's gotta be a shorty. Bonus if she's dhf...I mean dtf. She doesn't need to be a tall shorty, just don't show up looking like a minion. Like 'em dense and fast. Bonus if she can let me run in the front or rear.
As I typed that, in my head it had the tone of, "If the women don't find you handsome, at least they'll find you handy."
looking from the bike?
your right?
my right?
bike in a stand?
bike on it's bars and seat?
I need those casings in the bike parks, and swapping vertstar tires every two run isn't an option.
I am willing to bet with my $$ it's better!
You already have a transition tire between the Minion and Shorty , its called HighRoller.Seems like it would be more cost effective too have less options and perhaps you could past that cost saving down to your customers...
I saw one kid at Drammen skisenter who got a flat with Continental tires. I incidentally ran "Continental tyres" through my Internet-Hype-O-Meter, and came up with the result: 0.
Well duh! No wonder your tyre failed!
My Minion DHR Wide Trail is about shot but I can wait 6 more weeks to try an Aggressor WT!
