Maxxis Shows Off New Downhill Tire - Crankworx Whistler 2017

Aug 17, 2017
by Vernon Felton
New Maxxis DH tires

Maxxis revealed a new DH tire that they’ve been developing with input from Greg Minnaar. We found a couple of the new tires stashed behind Maxxis’ pop-up tents, here at Crankworx.

“This is a tire that came out of some conversations with Greg, after Mont-Sainte-Anne last year,” says Maxxis spokesman, Bobby Brown.

What was Minnaar looking for in a new tire?

“He was really trying to get a tire that would serve as a middle ground between a Minion DHF and a Shorty,” says Brown. “ It’s a little taller than a DHF, but not as tall as a Shorty. It also has a pretty dense knob pattern for better rolling speed.”

New Maxxis DH tires

The yet-to-be-named Maxxis tire will roll out in both 27.5 and 29-inch, tubeless-ready, 2.5 Wide Trail models.

The new tire can be run front and/or rear. Maxxis expects to bring it to the public in time for the 2018 race season—think early spring.

“We started talking about this tire at Mont-Sainte-Anne 2016 and the entire Syndicate raced on it this year. We’re really stoked with how well it worked on the rocky terrain out there.”

In other Maxxis rubber-related news, Brown noted that both 29 and 27.5 x2.5 Aggressor and High Roller II will be available in late September or early October of this year.

 @RollinFoSho:

Absolutely. If comes in at a true 2.5 or bigger then it can compete with the Mary. While the Mary has its weaknesses, on very rough, steep courses, its better than the Minions - at least until its knobs tear off.

The DHRII is good as a rear, but in a 2.4" max, its limited by its size on rougher courses. The DHF has more size but lacks straight line braking on the really steep stuff.

Minions do have the clear edge, over the Mary, in offering a Super Tacky for the front, and a 3C for out back. Schwab has only the Vertstar. The anticipated Addix Mary DH has yet to appear, and may end up just disappearing all together.

The Maxxis Shorty has a Mary like pattern, but lacks size.

So, Maxxis, hear this, if you want to beat the Mary, give this tire enough size. Like a 2.5-2.6 coming in at over 1400g, and offer it in a Super Tacky and a 3c.

I know riders on buffed out parks are driving the market, but there are still plenty us hitting the old school chunk that need a bigger, badder Minion.

Other companies used to copy Maxxis, now they copy Schwalbe. First the Rock Razor (Minion SS), Hans Dampf (Aggressor), and now the Magic Mary (Maxxis Uitlander). If only Schwalbe would copy Maxxis and make a DHR2 Wink

  • 31 3
@tuumbaq: It's not necessarily to do with "bringing 26 back" but more to do with product availability for people who can't afford to "just get a new bike".

People are going to be riding old 26" bikes for quite a long time, so there's still a parts market for it (albeit a market slowly reducing in size I admit).
  • 9 0
@haroman666: Damn straight. It's getting harder to find good 26" tires these days...

 26" is no joke

30 years of 26" bikes being made and now were to dump our bikes in the trash because of the stupid corporations deciding that THEY want to make more money and f#$k the poor guys.
  • 2 0
@nfa2005: or not so poor guys, just people who are happy with the rides they actually have. Bikes have a long lifespan
  • 1 0
@themountain: nitwhip? Is that Canadienese for nit-wit ?
  • 2 1
@haroman666: "...a slowly reducing market.." - no surprise then that most tyre companies choose not to produce a 26 for their newest tyres.
Saying that, it must suck for people who can't afford to upgrade yet.
  • 5 2
@tremeer023: who said 27.5 was an upgrade?
  • 3 2
@Boardlife69: depends what sort of riding you do. If it's DH, enduro or XC, then bigger wheels are definitely an upgrade. I'm assuming you're a dirt jumper?
  • 4 2
@tremeer023: I jump dirt, rocks, roots whatever. Sometimes I even jump jumps. I agree for racing the bigger wheels are faster. The other 99% of the time I ride my bike I want to get my shred on and whip some shit. And for that 26 is still the best.
  • 3 1
@haroman666: yes , I loved 26" wheels just like everybody but asking tire manifacturers to make a new design also for 26" is like asking the music industry to bring back tape cassette...just aint gonna happen
  • 5 2
bigger wheel argument is faster is plain bollocks. The moment industry was flushing 26 we already had some great 29ers coming up. And 29ers are fastest for the vast majority of human beings. 275 should have remained a niche, like Fatbikes.
  • 3 0

Maxxis, some of your 29 DD tires are only available in soft compound. These get torn up super quick riding in 4corners area. Please make more hard compound 29 DD tires.
  • 7 0
Yes please, 29x2.5WT 3C/TR/DD DHF's all day long down here in Southern Nevada
  • 4 0
@Aneijodefamilia: Yeah, when are these coming out? @Maxxis Need a burly DD 29 tire that is 2.5.
  • 2 0
I ride dual compound 29x2.5" DHF's front, Aggressor rear in DD. The dual compound DHF lasts FOREVER and still gives plenty of bite.
  • 1 0
@gumbytex: EXO casing...unfortunately I pop them like a balloon. Loved them in 27.5x2.5
  • 3 0
I ran into the same problem : looking for DH or at least DD style casing, that wouldn't be supertacky, maxxgrip or vertstar... Surprisingly difficult.
I need those casings in the bike parks, and swapping vertstar tires every two run isn't an option.
  • 1 0
ST front, 60a rear was great until they came out with that 3C B.S. Trying to compete with Schwalbe on how fast can you tear your knobs off. Only solid compound tires for me anymore. I love Michelins GumX compound which is a solid 55a. Their MagicX is 42 or 41a I believe so the same as a ST. They last much longer than any 3c tire I have ever had with more grip and better rolling. So please Maxxis, offer more solid compounds, but instead of bringing back 60a how about trying a 55-57a? Aye.
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: actually I didn't bother mentioning, but apart from a MM "bike park" cheap 1.5kg 2.35 tire, I also tried the Wild Rock'r2 gumX. That's a nice 1.1kg tire with bite and wear resistance, and of course not too fragile.
  • 11 0
I hope it is going to be 2.5 double down. I will NOT run an exo protection sidewall.
  • 5 0
Tru dat. Blew out 2 tires with only a few rides with exo and now on single pair of DD's I've been going for 2 months.
  • 2 0
Considering it was developed with minaar it will at least be available in dh casing. Double down doesn't last as a rear tire for me very well...
  • 2 0
@adrennan: it's the compound, not the sidewall, that wears down. And yes, FUK 3C EXO's
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: i mean i tore the double down in the middle of the tread.... (i am generally more violent to my rear wheel)
  • 2 1
@adrennan: I was doing that a lot too with the last few sets of Maxxis tires I had. Punctures and tearing between knobs. Problem went away when I switched over to Michelin.
  • 12 1

  • 5 2
You could say that about most new products, suspension, frame dimensions, gearing etc . . . . .
I am willing to bet with my $$ it's better!
  • 5 2
Dear Maxxis , instead of bringing in yet another new tire to your already too large selection, could you please develop a tire that will last more than 2 weeks or maybe even bring back the MaxxPro compound? When conditions are dry and dusty , your 3C compound is a total waste ( a wooden tire would give just as much grip in those conditions) and it wears out in no time in the bike park.

You already have a transition tire between the Minion and Shorty , its called HighRoller.Seems like it would be more cost effective too have less options and perhaps you could past that cost saving down to your customers...

  • 3 1

  • 4 0
Neat. Maxxis tires have served me well, can't wait to throw these on when the Minions wear out.
  • 3 2
hmmm.... it has tall knobs which would be good for gravel and mud, but the knobs are too large for just wet terrain and too tightly packed to clear mud effectively. It also doesn't have an uninterrupted edge channel to help it dig into corners on loose terrain/gravel... so it might be no good in mud, gravel, or wet, won't hook up well in loam/dirt corners and the tread pattern is too deep for hardpack....!? I always though the high-roller was supposed to be the middle ground between DHF and shorty, the high rollers tread design at least seems to have logic applied as a wet weather/technical terrain tyre...?
  • 1 0
I was at Drammen skisenter yesterday and did some downhill on dual Schwalbe Magic Mary DH 2.5x26. I love those fat tyres, even if a 2.35x26 would maybe give more control. I mounted both tyres simultaneously and the rear tyre is 50% worn, and the front is 70% worn after 9 months of occasional downhill, and also flying down the stairs at the Norwegian Royal castle to scare all the tourists.
I saw one kid at Drammen skisenter who got a flat with Continental tires. I incidentally ran "Continental tyres" through my Internet-Hype-O-Meter, and came up with the result: 0.
Well duh! No wonder your tyre failed!
