Martin Maes Parts Ways with GT Factory Racing

Dec 2, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Martin Maes is beyond stoked to be back.

In its latest video release, GT Factory Racing has seemingly confirmed the departure of Martin Maes after many years with the team.

Martin Maes' departure from GT has been heavily rumoured with our rumour round up back in September suggesting a team move could be on the cards. At the time Martin told us: "I can confirm that I've been approached with Orbea as well as other brands. Myself and my manager are still negotiating with the interested brands so I can confirm that nothing has been signed yet." A move away from GT sparks some big changes for Maes as he has seen wins across DH World Cup and EWS races with the team.

bigquotesI’ve known Martin and his family since the early ’90s. Well, at least his dad and grandpa! Martin only showed up in 1997. What a ride it has been since then! I’m sad to see him move on, but I’m extremely proud that I’ve had the chance to work so closely on his side along the way. We’ve had ups, downs, many victories, hangovers that come with those, you name it! You’re only getting started in life. I’m convinced you will achieve many more great things in the (near) future and I’ll be cheering you on, no matter what! Cheers Martin, enjoy the ride!Mark Maurissen, GTFR Team Manager

bigquotesThe time spent with Martin was more than a work relationship, it was a journey of growth and memorable accomplishments in so many aspects. Watching him race as a pro at 16 years old and seeing his pure talent was a treat and just knew he was on a path to accomplish great things. Though we shared in many tremendous wins and accolades the memories I will take with me are the talks we had about everything but bikes and racing. Martin is an old soul and cares so much about everyone and everything around him. It has been an honor to watch Martin mature as an incredible athlete but even more so as a man as he evolved from a shy, wide-eyed teenager into one of the sports role models and a doting father. It has been a hell of a ride that I will always cherish. Keep it pinned buddy and keep being you Martino!Steve Spencer, GT Global Sports Marketing Manager

bigquotesIt has been an amazing journey with GT Bicycles for 9 years. I have met amazing people along the way and we have achieved unforgettable memories. Thanks to the all GT Factory Racing team , I owe you a lot. Martin Maes

There is no word yet about where Martin could be ending up, but we will update this article when we know more.

 He's a highly SPECIALIZED racer.

We Are One step away from cracking the code.

He should have TRANSITIONed prior to announcing his departure.

Did you know his post ride drink is hIBIScus tea?

After his disqualification, Martin is now refusing all medication and is PRO PAIN.

MARtIN has a lot of options, good luck!

But he rode GT since he was a little LA PIERRE… anyway all the best for the future

@GrandMasterOrge: He needs a brand that has a DH bike. I dought Orbea have a secret DH model in the works. Hes deffo gona Mond-raker in all the offers.

Good to see him move on from the ROCKY time in his career. Many lesser riders would have fallen into a CANYON of despair.

Really decent words from the faces of GT. Not all brands are as personal and give bland ‘all the best for the future statements’. I hope GT secure another good rider as they seem to have the right ethos.

I know that GT gets a lot of hate for being a "big brand" and such... but their actual team is really small and a very "family" atmosphere. There's a reason that a lot of people who are on GT stay on GT for a long time.
  • 13 0
I was planning to post something about this as well. The quotes from these GT guys were some of the most sincere sounding words I've seen in one of these "parting ways" situations.
  • 25 1
@Hogfly: It is a very family-like oriented atmosphere. I had the privilege as an amateur racer who was once part of the Coalition team at Sea Otter about a couple years ago to hang with Joey Foesta, Rachel, Hans, Coach, Noga, meet the marketing and product teams.

It was a few very surreal days to just feel like I was part of the team. I love to compete, I always try but most times don't podium yet they treated me with respect and kindness which to me, I know I was very lucky and fortunate. Heck, even Noga would spend time to give me advice.

So, yeah, I just wanted to share my experience. As a chubby guy, amateur, person of color with a tiny YouTube channel, the people at GT treated me like a pro-rider and when all I asked them was, "Is it okay if I store my Zaskar here between races?" I hope that provides some insight.

 @yfrnaks:

All of that rings true and is the same thing I've experienced! Great group of people in the GT family.

They must be doing something right.Hans Rey has represented them since Jesus's was a lad
  • 3 0
Agreed. It can be very heartless. Seems to me that both sides probably would have liked to stay together. But given the last couple season I'm thinking a change might be good for Maes. Hopefully he gets the same type of support GT gave him and he can get back to what he was doing. He looked like his old self at times last year.

I hope he joins a team where he can still participate in downhill races. I like seeing enduro racers competing in world cups.
  • 2 2
This year he chose to run an enduro with DH forks didn't he? Was it a practise/tryout for moving to a team with no DH bike?
  • 5 1
@AyJayDoubleyou: Hyper Bikes has entered the chat.

THE GUY IS A DAMN DH RACER!
  • 1 0
I was thinking the same. He needs a team with a legit DH bike, Orbea isn't going to cutt it.

We find out if Martin is on Orbea, when PinkBike reveal he is the male "secret pro". ;-)
  • 8 1
I would hope not, since the secret pro couldn't even finish the last challenge run........
  • 6 1
I bet the male secret pro is Evan Wall
  • 1 0
 @swenzowski: great guess
  • 2 1
@tuskenraider: Maybe he was the secret pro, and since getting beaten by Flo and Bradley on that climb is now having doubts, hence the lack of confirmation as yet.

I'm sad only because I love seeing those lifetime partnerships between rider and brand (like Hans Rey & GT). In riding and team sports it is always cool to see an athlete stick it out with the same team. Anyways, I'm a fan of Martin's riding and his cool, calm approach so looking forward to seeing more of him in the future (and hopefully his new sponsor has a DH bike in their line up).

hard to move on when you have such good support behind you i bet. Really nice words. get after it Martin you deserve it.

Maybe he will join Atherton bikes

It's that time of year where the PB editors overuse the phrase "parts ways"

They could have gone with "Spotted- GT and Martin Maes part ways"

He’s a top gun. Hopefully he gets paid top dollar to ride a top bike.

GT keeping it classy. Makes me really like the brand. Seems like they would've loved to keep him.

I wish him the best , but reading some inside words ,I just wish Martin the best and also Gt ,cause I could never and I say never understand why?and I ask ?does a very well racer with a brand and vice versa change ?,is it because Martin who became a dad and maybe just went for a real break deal ,because maybe he might not get great overall results (and I guess that it might occur,in some stages ,or maybe not in Martin way ),or is GT brand not interested, cause when I look at GT brand and the history that they have ,I think that maybe some one responsible for the brand are just a stupid plain idiot, cause when the brand is ready to go hype they just say ,NO ,WE JUST HAVE TO DITCH THE ONES THAT ARE SELLING THE BRAND IN THIS NEW DAYS ,and I say THIS NEW DAYS ,I do not know (and I really don’t care if GT is selling more or less with is thinking, maybe I’m wrong ) but to let go some of the best to maybe a phew of some people that doesn’t real adds anything to that brand (some people that might only want to earn money and not give a f*cking thing about mtb,it is lame ,that kind of people that ,if mtb gets out of “fashion “they just skipp forward to the next best thing ,just almost everyone who say they love this and that ,and the rest off all that remains are called outsiders, different, nutters,so just enjoy ,while it last

He's still a legit podium threat on a DH bike, and loves racing DH. I can't imagine him going to a brand without a proper DH bike, or program.
