After a successful 2017 relaunch, the US Open of Mountain Biking has announced the event will be hosted at Killington Resort in 2018. The iconic event will be held August 1st to 5th, the week leading up to the Mount Saint Anne World Cup. The USO Downhill will take place on a newly built race course coming directly off Killington’s 4241’ Peak. 2018 will also be the first year we see a US Open Enduro event that’s sure to attract some of the world’s best from this discipline.

bigquotesKillington has invested heavily in their bike program over the past few years and we are very excited about the opportunity we have to grow the US Open with Killington Bike Park. In addition to the resort itself, the entire Killington Valley is working hard to establish themselves as a major mountain bike destination and it shows.Clay Harper, US Open of Mountain Biking Event Director

YT Mob racer and 2017 US Open downhill winner, Neko Mulally, recently visited Killington to walk the newly proposed race course off of Killington Peak and sneak in some riding.

bigquotesHaving the US Open back on the schedule brings an atmosphere for racing that is a highlight of the year for riders. It’s an awesome downhill race and also features the fun events like whip-off and kids racing that bring us all together. The terrain and bike park at Killington are incredible and I can’t wait to race there.Neko Mullaly

The US Open was first held in 2003 and is notable for its simple two-category format: Open Class and Amateur Class. Anyone can enter the Open Class and compete amongst the pros for the large cash purse and a chance to prove their rank. Amateurs compete for bragging rights and some of the best prizes in racing. Always a favorite among racers and fans alike, the USO regularly attracts an international field of athletes. Past winners of the downhill race include Sam Hill, Steve Smith, Tracey Mosely, Bryn Atkinson, Miranda Miller, Aaron Gwin, Jill Kinter, and Neko Mulally.

bigquotesWe are happy there is another big event on the calendar in North America. It reminds me of the days when NORBA races were as big as World Cups! Our riders had a great time racing the 2017 US Open and we are looking forward to bringing the whole team to Killington in 2018. The whip comp is a blast and US fans are great. The proximity to Mount Saint Anne is also a bonus.Mathieu Dupelle, Kona Bikes Gravity Team Manager

In 2017, the event expanded to include the USO Best Whip Comp, an Adaptive MTB race, and the US Kids Open, featuring the Grom Bomb Downhill race. Looking ahead to 2018 at Killington, fans will see these new segments of the festival continue to grow along with the addition of a USO Enduro race. Historically, Killington Resort is known for developing and hosting large events. Killington’s 2016 FIS Ski World Cup race is widely regarded as one of the best to ever be produced in the US.

“The US Open of Mountain Biking is an amazing opportunity for Killington to show off the immense progress we’ve made expanding our mountain bike park over the past four seasons. This summer, we reached 20,000 mountain bike visitors,” says Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort, “Aside from the race, unique dining experiences, lodging and events mean there will be something for everyone during an action-packed weekend at Killington.”

The good times go well beyond the race course at The US Open of Mountain Biking, with a focus on being one of the most fun and fan-friendly events of the season. From the DJ blasting tunes on the race course to eccentric guests in costume to the best whip comp and after parties, the US Open is always full of energy and excitement on either side of the tape.

While the US Open will be held at Killington next year, the USO team will still be supporting a national level race at Mountain Creek on Memorial Day Weekend, as well as supporting the Windrock Pro GRT again in Tennessee in early March. “We are excited to work with Mountain Creek’s new management to host a downhill event there again in 2018. Additionally, Windrock Bike Park is really moving the needle with what they’re doing in the Southern US and we are happy to be involved with their event,” says Harper.

Yes. Should be a great turnout of top names being the weekend before Mt St Anne. And it looks like the course may be starting from the top of the gondola? Sick.

Just DO NOT let Gravity Logic have a hand in it - They just pretty much paved over most of Killington. Killy needs a real DH run off the Gondola all the way down and they should also put in for a world cup! They have all the amenities to make it great.

You, sir, need to get out and ride harder trails there.
  • 22 2
I actually think Gravity Logic crafted some incredibly fun trails! And there is plentyyy of double black tech left at Killington if that's what you're looking for.

 @bikekrieg: This guy gets it

@bikekrieg: You're right. There's still plenty of gnarly stuff there, and gravity logic carved out some absolutely beautiful lines off of Ramshead. It's becoming a DH haven. Competition for Highland within 5 years I bet.

Or snowshed... I moved to the west coast and haven't been back for a while Smile

It's not Killington's or GL's fault you don't know where to access the gnar at Killington
  • 6 5
@sfrucian: I've been riding Killington for over 20 years - and every other venue in NE and NY for that matter - I do pretty damn well on Low Rider and the true black diamonds. I don't do jump trails - could care less. That's not mountain biking - it's BMX and DJ. Smooth flow trails- like Sideshow and the stuff at Snowsend (they call it no less Intermediate or black diamond ) - No thank you. My skills are beyond that. There is not a single trail at Killington that has been created since it's opening - years ago - other than what GL has done. All the original stuff is what there is for "gnar". GL only makes the same trail over and over again every where they go. Go to Sugarbush, Plattekill or hit the WC or Citizens at Windham. Please no need to be insulting.

@neimbc: so your upset that Killington has decided to open up more terrain for beginners and intermediates to access? Perhaps they realize that they do have some great technical stuff albeit old but still great and want to create stuff that will actually bring in a lot more new customers so they can continue to provide some of the best lift access riding in New England. There are far more beginner and intermediate riders out there than experts theyneed to cater to them if they want to survive.

I for one am super excited that the U.S. Open will be coming to Killington and I think it would be a good start in trying to draw a UCI World Cup event. They hosted an FIS World Cup last winter and it did so well they are bringing it back this winter.

@lifeofloon: Most of those riders who are beginners and intermediates will most likely never advance to expert. Going from easy paved hard packed dirt luge runs on a trail bike to something like Scarecrow (old trail 7) and Low Rider is more than a leap. They also need to keep the experts coming - after all we are most likely the guys who started going back in the day when nobody knew of DH biking at the resorts. There are truly few intermediate trails. If you want the intermediate trails to DH I suggest you try Sugarbush. They are largely all intermediate trails (Yes they call some BD.) BTW - I was advocating a WC event at Killington for the past two decades. Plattekill, if you haven't been, is truly the home of the advanced DH biker.

@dannyhuber: Highland? maybe if you stack it 3 Highlands high then yeah..
I'll buy what you're selling if you compare Thunder to Highland, but Killington is a different animal all together.
Killington wears you out like no other in the northeast. I don't like the $58 price though..

Killington is the Hunter Mountain of Vermont in ski season. Amateur paradise.

@fecalmaster: Magic!!!!!! Is the pow day hill. They have lots in their goodie bag..
  • 2 0
 @neimbc: Pkill no more....
  • 1 0
@mbiker35: If you know it's going to be good weather - buy them on line - $44 +tax - like they need to charge tax! Hopefully Plattekill won't completely go away.
  • 3 1
@neimbc: I understand what you're saying. They could use some more true intermediate trails. When it comes down to it though the beginner intermediate riders are the ones who are paying most of their bills and they need to keep them coming back. It doesn't make good business sense for a resort the size of Killington to say, hey you to another place of those are the trails you want. They want and need that business too.
In case you missed it Plattekill closed shop this year. When you only crater to the few it's hard to pay your bills.

@mbiker35: sure it is!! he's down to spinning once a month, which is better then not at all!!!! my favorite place to ride! a real riders mountain.... been riding there 16 years and it never gets old
  • 3 0
@mbiker35: Buy A VMBA membership for ~50 bucks and you get a free killington, sugarbush, and burke lift passes. You also get a bunch of 1/2 off or buy 1 get 1 ski passes to a bunch of mountains in VT.
  • 2 1
@neimbc: Right, and you're condescension is totally why I insulted you and others who complain like you. Have a good time, enjoy the park because we're so lucky, and if it's too "easy" ride faster.

 Have you boys tried Whiteface?
  • 2 2
@neimbc: good point on how lame jumps are on a mountain bike. BMX is soo easy. I remember that time you borrowed a bike, won x-games best trick, jumped on a plane and win the UCI supercross at Chula.

Do these pinkbikers even know how rad you are and how beyond jumps you are?

Wish I was half the rider you were!

 @neimbc: thanks for that info..
I started my downhill at Mt. Snow and Pkill a long time ago..

@sourdiesel: If someone ask me what it's like to ride there. I say it's like riding on dinner plates...lo,l luv it.
  • 3 0
@mbiker35: aka ROCK SURFING!!! Platty separates riders, especially my riding crew!! they guys in my crew that kill Bike parks are scared $hitless at Platty..... I can hold my own at both bike parks and gnar mountains but I tend to shine at Platty!!! plus riding Platty 16years does help ...
  • 4 0
@sourdiesel: Platty literally separates riders and bikes.

All this talk about gnar and no one mentions Whiteface ... Which is right around the corner from Killington ... Guys! It's under your nose!
  • 1 0
@schofell84: whiteface is awesome. really wish killington had more trails like what whiteface has to offer.
  • 3 0
@mfrdhracer: It's my home mountain but I wish it had more intermediate trails to bring friends on! Haha it's so GD steep.
  • 4 0
@schofell84: nothing from the top is easy. The blue trails at whiteface are harder than the double blacks at killington.
  • 1 0
@mfrdhracer: No kidding? It's a kinda far ride for me , so never gone there. Not even skiing or snowboarding either. I guess I'm going to have to nail that bitch..
  • 3 0
@mbiker35: I generally dont leave Whiteface without fixing a tire, rim, or buying brake pads. haha
  • 3 0
@mbiker35: if you are looking for gnarly trails, it is well worth the drive. the guys running the bike park are great, and will usually take a few runs with you.

top to bottom DH trail off K1 will be sweet! too much fire road to get to the good stuff, hopefully this forces things to improve. They have soooo much land to play with.

Stoked! This and Mount Saint Anne makes for a banner two weeks next summer!!
  • 3 0
The course is coming down Chop Chop which in the winter is a super steep glade. On the bike, it is going to make for a hell of a final pitch! SO psyched USO is coming to K!

Can't wait....Killington is building a world class venue for MTB enthusiasts. The easy stuff keeps my wife smiling and the all their sick BD runs keep me and my teenagers stoke max'd out.

All this awesome development in the east while DH racing continues to die in the rockies (minus Angel Fire). Good work Colorado.
