Jordie Lunn's YT Tues CF - Red Bull Rampage 2018

Oct 25, 2018
by Paul Aston
Jordie Lunn

At 35 years old, Jordie Lunn is one of the oldest competitors at Rampage, but age is not holding back his hucking. Lunn is riding a production YT Tues CF frame in medium size, with a sick surf-inspired custom paint job.

All his settings are the same as he rides normally, proving that he is committed to the send on a daily basis. Suspension settings, tubeless tires, handlebar height and an alloy handlebar (he says he never uses carbon) are all business as usual.

The bike and color scheme is brand-new for Rampage, but the settings mirror his old bike – "Just running it the way I always do!"

For me, Lunn has separated himself from every other rider in the sport. He seems to want to spend the rest of his days living peacefully in the forest, building things only he would consider riding, growing himself as a person, and occasionally inspiring us with a glimpse into his workouts, riding, and view on life. I respect the hell out of that. Thanks for being my life guru, sir!

He's def one of a kind. That paint job is ghastly/good, but what about the fact that he's 5'10 on a Medium. That would be argued in the YT forum thread for weeks!
  • 8 4
@endlessblockades: and 150mm bars, sheeples heads are exploding!
  • 15 0
@catfish9797: good thing is on 27.5 wheels can you imagine if he was on 26 with a medium frame and 750m bar the Internet would explode
  • 29 2
That has to be a mistake.... 165 PSI in the fork and 5 tokens??? GEE...ZUZ
  • 2 0
 came here to say that

Dude is 205 lbs hitting monster drops/kickers... I guess it's what he needs?
  • 11 0
It's like he's trolling the comments section of PB.

The number of spacers is crazy but the new boxxer does run much higher pressures than the old one. And WAY higher than what you would put in a lyrik.
  • 13 0
But only a 400 lbs spring?
  • 1 0
@RoboDuck: Ahh ok so all these fork springs are quite a bit different then. Cause Sorge's RUX was only 60 PSI. I ride about half of what Jordy rides and I have a 150mm pike. Still, his setup is probs stiff as hell haha.
  • 2 0
@BEEner: Yeah every air spring is wildly different. I have gone from 125psi in a boxxer to 75psi in a Pike. It will change with travel as well.

@ybsurf 400lb spring seems low on the surface but it is a long travel, progressive bike so the amount of force at the end of the stroke will be quite high (more shock stroke = more force at the end of the shock stroke).

Though with a guy like Jordie on a rampage setup you can guarantee that a normal person would hop on the bike and feel like they are hitting a wall not very deep into the travel as the ramp up kicks in. 5 spacers!!
  • 3 5
Smaller spaces require higher psi, he's shrunk the volume with tokens e.g. fat bike psi - 5 , 26 inch - 30
  • 6 1
@jack-beadel: the same principle doesn't really apply with suspension. One of the reasons you may want more spacers is to use less air pressure in the fork or shock. Reason being is because it's more progressive so the force needed to bottom out is way higher. You can decrease the pressure to offset that a bit and gain some initial stroke suppleness. There's too much going on in a fork to directly make that comparison.
  • 3 0
@BEEner: you can make that comparison when the main intent is to hold the thing up. On rampage hits with a 200lb nutter aboard. I doubt he’s concerned too much with how supple his top stroke is?
It is as simple as @jack-beadel says in this case I think
  • 2 0
@ybsurf: the Tues has a very low leverage rate. Gwin is known for his hard suspension too but uses what most would think a low spring rate on the rear.
  • 3 0
@jack-beadel: air springs operate on boyles law.

Not exactly the same as tires.

With more spacers you will need the same psi, you will just have less volume.
  • 2 0
@iqbal-achieve: The other thing to keep in mind is that low pressure tires work because they can expand sideways. The low pressures still allow the tire to flex so when you sit on them they balloon out. The total volume of the tire doesn't actually change. The same can't be said for a suspension fork. The "sidewalls" don't expand. If you start with a certain pressure, you get more as you push the fork through its stoke. So if it's a 3:1, then that means at bottom out, Jordy has almost 500 PSI in there. The suppleness comment was more of an aside then my main focus.

205lbs that's 92kgs for all our metric readers...
  • 3 0
Yeah, he's a big guy. I'm like 6 foot 250lbs, and it's horrible for bicycling, I need to get back to like 200lbs. I'm 250lbs because I weight lifted for 11 years, and ate tons. My friend who is small, used to ride circles around me, a pro cyclist only puts out like 2.5 horsepower, so if it's 2.5 horsepower, and you're 100lbs versus 200lbs, it makes a huge difference.
  • 14 0
 Tire pressure - 50 psi!?!
  • 10 1
Ha, that's what I thought... then I saw how much he weighs... 205 lbs!! Dudes a monster!

flag Kimura (Oct 25, 2018 at 13:48) (Below Threshold)
@islandforlife: how is 205 lbs a lot? its like the weight of somebody 5'11" with an average amount of muscle
  • 8 1
@Kimura: c'mon its definitely somewhat yoked. For perspective, Ritchie Rude apparently clocks in at about the same height/weight and he's well built.
  • 9 1
@Kimura: That would not exactly be 'average' muscle. Those are about the exact stats for Russell Wilson for ex., so more like NFL QB p'raps. Here in America right now 'average amount of muscle' probably ain't so good. Wink
  • 12 0
@Kimura: According to a 5 sec. internet search, the average weight for healthy 5' 11" male is between 155 and 189 depending on a few factors. 5'-10" 205 is a borderline unit, he's 10-20# away from being an American football player. Way more than average muscle.

flag colincolin (Oct 25, 2018 at 15:04) (Below Threshold)
@zeerob: These stats almost put him in the obese range which I think is crazy for someone who hucks down 30-40 feet. Don't want to know what his knees must feel like.
Now don't tell me "ooh BMI doesn't tell you shit if it's muscle, bro". A BMI this high definitely puts lots of stress on your heart and joints in the long run.

Anyhoo really looking forward to your runs Jordie!
  • 3 0
@Kimura: v. true but this is a bike website, 175 is big here
  • 4 1
@remoh: Oh lol. I'm 5 foot 9 inches and 175. hardtails hate me
  • 2 1
@colincolin: what a load of bollocks mate. Strength is relative to wgt AND body fat percentage. That’s the important part, body fat. If he’s heavy for his height AND low in body fat then he’s just a strong mofo period! Know correct me if I’m wrong but what he does on a bike does need strength does it not! ......and big aggots!

Love seeing all these comments from couch coaches acting like they know what PSI, how many spacers and which spring he should be using better than his own professional crew
  • 5 0
Never seen a bike that immediately reminded me of Miami Vice. I don't know if Jordie named it Don Johnson, but if he hasn't, he should Smile
  • 4 0
I don't know. Would be better with the character names. So should it be Crockett or Tubbs?

Whats up with the nose of the seat is it cut off. is that so u can do cans easier?

i think SDG is just rebranding as S.

Of all the sketchy features in Rampage those Vee tires look the most sketchy. He should get 10 points automatically just because of that.
  • 10 1
Hello there, Jordie starts to use Vee Tire Co since last year and he happy with our compound and casing, also he is unique with tubeless setup compared to other freeriders that prefer Tube
  • 1 0
I think Vee also manufactures E13 tires.
  • 2 2
@VeeTireCo: Just making a joke, I know you have improved in recent years, keep up the good work.
  • 3 0
@okavango: I believe Michelin makes E-13. Side knobs are identical.

I weight 205 and run around 58 psi in my Fox 36 170mm Grip2 w/2 tokens and 237 psi in my Fox X2 with no tokens. The bike feels like the front ends dives more on the downhills. The mechanic at the bike shop let me borrow his Shockwiz and he basically helped me dial in the X2 but it seemed we were still tinkering with the fork when i had to give it back. i may try messing with the high speed rebound again like in the article Pinkbike had a couple of days ago. The suspension we have access to now is unbelievable. I still remember back in the summer of 94' when i bought a brand new stump jumper in the grunge grape frame with full xt and badass Rockshox Judy with 2" of suspension. Still wish i had that bike for the frame alone. Badass looking frame.

Brett Tippie is still sending some sketchy big lines and turns 50 next year. I've been surprised over the last 10 years at the longevity of some extreme sports athletes. A lot of my favorite BMX, MTB, snowboard, and skateboard athletes from when I was young are still killing it.
  • 3 1
@LittleDominic: haha, most of the athletes i admired when i was a kid are in wheelchairs/dead/rehab etc. but that's what happens when you're 55.
  • 3 0
@flipoffthemonkeys: Ha that applies to most everyone I know/knew. At least some of us are still out there having some fun!
  • 1 0
@LittleDominic: did you see Tony Hawk spin a 900 on very at 50 years old? These guys are inspirational...still
