Jordie Lunn: 1983 - 2019

Oct 11, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

This week marks two years since the passing of Jordie Lunn at the age of 36. The racer-turned-freerider passed away after a crash while trail riding in Mexico on October 9th, 2019. He was riding in Cabo San Lucas with his friends Darren Berrecloth, Brayden Barrett-Hay, and Greg Watts.

From landing the first-ever 360 flip on 26" wheels, to competing at Rampage, to his mindblowing Rough AF edit series, Jordie was at the forefront of freeride mountain biking for more than a decade. His legacy will live on through the Memorial Bike Park founded in his name in his hometown of Langford that opened earlier this year to help develop more mountain biking talent. Jordie's friendliness, gentle nature, and exuberance for life will be remembered by the entire mountain bike community and we count ourselves lucky to have known him. Here are some of our favourite photos from his incredible riding career.

Always missed, always a legend. Miss you Jordie! The pictures are fantastic. The one of Jordie and Brett says it all. I am on vacation this week and I am going to send it as hard as I can in his honor.

I met Jordie at the YT Mill in San Clemente grand opening. In the mill, there's a huge image of Jordie dropping in on the tree as pictured above, and I buddy and I were talking about it. Jordie came up right along next to us, and I looked over and could not believe it! I told him it was the craziest thing I'd ever seen anyone do, not just in biking, but in general. I then also mentioned that most times you see someone do something wild and the GoPro footage makes it look smaller than it actually was, but not the ladder drop - it still looked bananas! He laughed, said thanks for the support, shook our hands, and walked off. When he walked off, he was limping significantly and moving slowly.

The bike park scene with jordie drifting in his miyata and giving out free t shirts was pure gold. His antics are sorely missed!

think about him often...I broke my shoulder on a mundane jump I'd done 1000x and yet have ridden away unscathed from some gnarly stuff over the years. Strange how it works out that way sometimes....

The first time I saw Jordie on film was The Collective. That segment in Whistler with Jordie on the hardtail was forever imprinted in my mind as the definition of paradise. His segments exuded so much soul. I never met the guy, but I felt a connection for some reason. When he passed, I cried and cried. Miss you Jord.

I first met Jordie as a teenager when we went over to his house. He was in his 20's and i had seen him in a bunch of movies and on Drop in at that point, so teenage me was a bit star-struck. He was more than happy to let us ride his jumps and pull the tarp off the foam pit and let us try all the stuff we wanted to learn while giving us advice, demonstration, and tips on how to pull it off. Just a supportive role model of a dude... just so down to earth and genuine. I only met him a couple times after that but ive always carried nothing but respect for him, because he gave respect unconditionally. RIP Jordie. Gone, but not forgotten.

I was fortunate enough to get to build a DJ park with Jordie in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. He was such an amazing builder/biker as well as just a solid guy in general. So friendly to all the kids that came and volunteered, and an incredible mentor!
I was so sad to learn about his passing, I feel so lucky to have gotten the chance to meet him!

 Is the park still there?
  • 1 0
 @tomich1:
It is… but it isn’t how it was when it was first built. It had a really sick big line originally, but it’s much smaller now. Better for kids I guess.
It should come up if you search for it on google, Cleasby Bike Park, it’s right at the bottom of Cobble Hill Mountain.

I completely miss the guy even though I didn’t ever meet him. His content was just bad ass and inspiring! We needed more of what he had to offer this sport and his talent was just rich! I’m 49 years old like many of you out there and have been lucky to see the sport evolve with folk like Jordie. He is certainly missed! God Bless him all that he did for Mountain Biking!

Not in any way affiliated with this. Saw this artwork of Jordie's huge tree drop reposted by a well known rider on Facebook. www.pinkbike.com/photo/21466240
Artist is Jared Fry. Can purchase a print off www.redbubble.com/people/JaredFry/shop Money is a bit tight right now but I really love the piece and am planning on ordering one.

RIP Jordie. I was not expecting to see myself in one of these photos (which I have never seen before). I attended Summer Gravity Camp (SGC) twice when I was in high school and it was an amazing experience seeing his talent first hand and receiving coaching as well. I have the full face helmet on wearing a grey SGC tee.

Live on. I have been to his memorial plaque bolted to the rock at the start of Flying Monkey - I did the push ups. I did the left handed throw.
  • 2 1
I know about the push ups, but what's this about a left handed throw?
  • 1 1
@barp: He always did a left handed rock throw and had others do it as well. Part of the ritual.
  • 2 1
What’s the story behind the push ups and throw? If there is one.

Rough AF 3 will forever be the greatest mtb video in my eyes. Everyone I've shown it to is just mind blown. Amazing photos. Still can't believe he's gone, hopefully he's doing 360 flips in heaven right now.

Yelling and using expletives watching RAF3 for the umpteenth time. So much edge-of-your-seat packed into such a short amount of time. My balls are bleeding. Such an athlete and ambassador to this sport.
