Video: Jolanda Neff Gets Weird on the New Trek Supercaliber

Sep 5, 2019
by Trek Bikes

Words: Trek

We just introduced a brand new cross-country race bike. Visually it looks like something between a hardtail and a full suspension bike. We embraced that duality and created this not-so-traditional launch video with Swiss XC star Jolanda Neff. It's a classic tale of in-between-ness that quickly spins off the rails. It fits nicely into the current trend of weird launch videos. The video was filmed in Amalfi, Italy, by IFHT Films.

The picture of Jolanda with her eyes crossed in the PB article list is what I feel like when riding a bike under 130mm rear travel. LOL The video is a great step in a different direction for bicycle marketing. I thought it was funny.

I think they got the guys from ifht/Magali my dude to make the commercial.
  • 33 0
Must have been subliminal messages in this commercial because now I kinda want one.
  • 9 0
I was just looking at 150mm 29ers and have no use for this bike, but I really want it for some strange reason. That's a solid ad.
  • 2 0
I sincerely want one to run single speed. Would be awesome!

I must say... I enjoyed it, I like Jolanda... but Spec has the marketing edge now
  • 14 0
IFHT also worked with Trek to produce "How to buy a mountain bike": youtu.be/yotOZVELSMc
  • 6 1
@WAKIdesigns: Either way, the trend towards irreverent marketing by big players is very entertaining
  • 4 1
@WAKIdesigns: difference is; PB posts Trek's weird video, but they didn't post the brilliant Spesh series except one or two in the weird bike video story many months after they were released.

I just thought that Spec videos are fkd up in an honest way. It looks like people behind the Spec films have full freedom and maybe folks are spec are even going: "yes! go for it! But also! How about we make him fart and spray poop on tray made of bacon! and then mechanic puts wrench on it and then it melts the poop which evaporates and the new Epic comes in smoke!"

@Rubberelli: I'll be honest, I think Jolanda did a good job as an actress, she went with it... but the vid was a try hard. In a way I appreciate they tried, in another way, no, just no. It looked like an asocial CEO going on a course how to be funny on a party, coming in and trying to crack jokes at his employees... Then If yet another company comes up with a "funny" video it will not be funny anymore and slo mo will be the new RAW.
  • 1 0
@caltife: they have awesome gravel video as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuZhaapDbC0
  • 1 1
@WAKIdesigns: Youre right, Jolanda did a great job. The video was funny and modern irreverent. Perhaps the post telling you it was weird made you anticipate weird, rather than Will Ferrell-style comedy, which it was. Spesh's were balls out Adult Swim weirdness.
  • 28 6
It's a soft tail. They've been around for like, 50 years.
  • 7 0
With a damper? Does that thing dampen?
  • 2 0
Yep, soft tails with damper. Like some old Morati for example.
  • 1 0
@Quebracho: I once had a Morati rigid fork with suspension.
  • 22 0

Where's Luca? Was Luca one of the bears? Razz
  • 14 0
Best advert I've seen all year
  • 11 1
Should've put Luca on one of the cereal boxes. But yeah, this is marketing done right.
  • 11 0
It's a great ad. And not weird at all. You guys need to get out more.
  • 10 0
“Goat disagrees” - what’s Greg Minnaar doing discussing cross country bikes in Italy with some farmers?
  • 7 1
F^$&* xc.....THAT is the new 4 cross bike ......... if Thomas Slavic was racing that he would have won everything ever - well maybe he would have broken a few in the mix, but hey, that's racing (waits for explosions - and potential ban from PB.) Love this bike and Jolanda. Love having fun too. The bike looks like a game changer.
  • 3 2
If only trust made 100mm fork...
  • 15 5

Props to @IFHTFilms and @Trek for showing others how to do a great bike promo. Kudos!

Kid at 2:47 with the crutches nailed it
  • 5 0
 Even wears his helmet wrongly
  • 8 0
That's a bike ad done right.
  • 10 2
Specialized called, they want their commercial back.
  • 6 3
The ad was super entertaining but I don't get the premise. Even if it handled and weighed like a hardtail, how can you argue that it is not a full suspension bike with a rear shock and a suspension fork...
  • 3 1
 It's not a shock. It's a strut.
  • 3 0
@TheR: you can cal it a churro for all I care... As long as it has a spring with a damper (which the IsoStrut has) it is a shock in my book. It's just a new linkage design from what I can tell.
  • 1 0
@wolfisberg: Haha! Glad you're not working on my car!
  • 3 0
I passed by this numerous times today, but boredom got the best of me. And I'm so glad it did! Great video. XC and scooter kids suck, but that was an entertaining few minutes.
  • 24 23
Nice ad but i don't get why everyone is excited about this bike:

I really fail to understand Trek:s claim that its light; at 9.96kg without a dropper, it weights about the same as an Epic with a dropper and that one have 100mm suspension (without a dropper the Epic is about 400 grams lighter than the Supercaliber and thats even with the Epic having heavier wheels than the Supercaliber). Same with a Lux, remove the dropper and its lighter than the Supercaliber. Or buy the Lux frameset and use the same wheels and rims as the Supercaliber and you would get a Lux that weights just a tad above 9kg (and the Lux with same finishing kit ends up about 2-3'000USD cheaper). Why buy a compromised 60mm suspension bike when there is lighter 100mm bikes out there?

Waiting for my 300 downvotes
  • 56 0
You don't get it. It's Paradigm Shifting!
  • 3 0
Correct, the bike just does not live up to the claim: "it certainly doesn't weight like one (full suspension bike)".
You compare it with the Epic, it is same with the Scott Spark. Spark frame + shock = 1800g Supercaliber=1900g.
So it certainly weighs like one for a start.
But if it's rigid like a hardtail OK, but how can I trust their claims now?
  • 10 1
Trek shows the weight of the bike with two 300g inner tubes in a size Medium bike. Also be careful when just looking at stated frame weight. Trek's are going to be heavier because their knockblock system requires the headset and stem be sold with the frame. They also include the weight of the rear axle which is why the frame is quoted at 1900g.
  • 1 0
@vanillarice19: I'm sure mates will be trimming this down to a 19 pound bike.
  • 3 0
Were you inspired by this fairy tail video to compare catalog bike weights?
  • 2 1
Who cares about the bike, it was the advert and Jolanda that was entertaining. The bike "Who cares, Cross Country sucks!".

Jolanda's porridge faces were priceless as was her breaking into the bears home.

I go off now and have a look at the next XC course preview LOL. Waiting for the Next Enduro Round, cough.
  • 2 1
Apparently there was a second commercial "in the can" in case either of the Trek racers won the 'horse race' at Mont St. Anne.

"How does it feel Racer Name> winning the race?"
"Supercaliberfragilisticexpialidocious"

Holy f this was the funniest bike release video I’ve ever seen. Neff you made my day!!
  • 1 1
How is the bike any different than the soft tail XC bikes from back in the day? It’s just an updated version with 29” wheels. I’m not seeing this as a radical new concept. The geo looks standard XC it seems. 70’ HA etc. video was excellent though. Neff is really good at acting.
  • 1 0
Now of @trek would do an all black 9.9 with the gold xx1 and the "trek" logo on the downtube in a matching gold to match the kashima coated dropper seatpost and fork stantions I may have to sell a kidney.
