Jamie Edmondson Pulls Out of Maribor World Cup Due to Brexit Related Visa Issues

Aug 12, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

Jamie Edmondson has announced he won't be racing in Maribor this weekend as he was unable to secure a Visa to enter Slovenia.

Previously, British riders could enter Slovenia and the rest of the European Union without any documents beyond their passport but Jamie has fallen foul of new rules following Brexit that restrict the amount of time he can spend in EU countries.

bigquotesDevastated to say that I won’t be racing in Maribor this weekend, Brexit doing Brexit things meant I needed a Visa to get out to Europe which should have been straight forward but with the embassy having never had to do one before meaning 3 applications + 2 different work permits and working on it since the last race it’s still not come through in time so I’ll be sitting this one out. Taking the positives that I’m still healthy and can keep training at home and I’ll see you all at Lenzerhiede.Jamie Edmondson

Just off the podium today for Jamie Edmondson finishing up in 4th.

As Jamie is self-employed, contracted to his team as a freelancer, he was travelling as a tourist and was only allowed to spend 90 days out of 180 Visa-free. As he had been training in Europe in the pre-season and then doubling up racing the World Cups and EWS he exceeded this limit and was left trying to find other ways to gain entry.

Jamie told us, "I had applied for a French long-stay tourist visa knowing I'd need one straight after La Thuile but the first one was denied because I wasn't staying in France for long enough. I reapplied for that, showing I'd be in France for longer but that was denied so the only option was to get an internship Visa with my team manager in Germany but then the Germans changed their mind on what's required to get a work permit.

"It has ended up taking too long as the gap between races is pretty small and you need to give in your passport when you apply so you're stuck in the UK. I tried asking British Cycling and my local member of Parliament for help but neither of them could or would do anything.

"It's all pretty chaotic and with the consulate making it up as they go it's pretty hard to know what to do. In future, I'll have to limit my preseason time in Europe and go further afield and also come home more between races, which isn't great financially or environmentally but that's what it has come to."

Jamie Edmondson found himself a team and rightfully so after Portugal last year. He was not wasting time getting to business today.

Jamie is hoping to return to racing on the continent in early September for the Lenzerheide World Cup round.

@scott-townes: let me preface by saying I am against Brexit. However I can see how most of UK (aside from Scotland) would vote for it. If Americans were part of a union of north, central and South American countries and felt that some of the countries were taking advantage of the overall wealth (let’s say Peru pays less tax and yet their population enjoys more social services) or America had to abide by a collective judges and laws dictated by other countries I can see how some if not most Americans would want out of the deal at any cost. I think to try to convince folks that in the long run improving the conditions of the union and all countries involved would benefit all, including the wealthy countries is a hard sell, but I believe it to be true.

No, this is what you get in a democracy when for too long the massive, amazing benefits of being in Europe didn't get communicated or shared equally. This is what you get when you assume people are morons and take them for granted. Poor Jamie though, what a nightmare.
  • 4 1
@dirtypants: That's what happens when people vote with their feelings instead of facts. The UK shot itself in the foot economically wise by going all isolationist.
  • 3 0
@dirtypants: Literally all examples you provided have direct corollaries to the US.

America is a union of states (perhaps we could call them... United?) and some states take far more from the federal budget than they put in.

All states have to abide by federal regulations and judges, often dictated by other states.

Amusingly, the loudest calls to "Brexit" in the US, ie secede, are also the ones that take more than contribute, so yeah, I agree. Convincing people to be a part of a union for the benefit of all is tough.

@dirtypants: That you describe is called society. there is obviously a worldwide movement that professes the freedom of the individual by taking it to the extreme (I can choose to get vaccinated, I can choose to follow community rules, etc.). But societies are (and must be) governed by laws that may or may not appeal to the individual. Many politicians have raised this philosophy to entire regions or states (see our Salvini) ... I want the law that pleases me (individual, city, region, state) except to clash with the reality of isolationism

My kids Tory Grandma didnt vote for brexit, so stop shouting rubbish.
It was the disillusioned north that voted leave in little England as well as some farmers and fishermen who voted without really knowing the ramifications of their actions (some just didnt care whatever happened), the traditional labour seats voted leave, dragging the rest of the UK out of Europe and a whole country that voted remain out too (Jamies home country).
  • 12 1
@betsie: calling out generalisations and then making your own generalisations, we’re all at it. My traditional labour seat didn’t vote for Brexit. I think a better generalisation would be to say that the more money somewhere got from the EU the more inclined it was to vote leave (go figure, North Lincolnshire). Also, the more f*cked it was from Thatchers cuts in the 80s the more likely it was to vote leave. Those people feel left behind and the Etonians exploited it. How those people feel better represented by the tories I’ll never know. Mind you, looks like the tories are starting to loose their traditional votes to the Lib Dem’s in the south, it’s all going arse over tit.

@harvUK: so HarvUK, do you think its good that racers like Jamie and no doubt many more will be financially poorer off by having to return to the UK to train because they can't spend more than a certain amount of time in the EU? the Pinkbike poll recently found that most riders earn a pretty poor wage for their efforts, Brexits just making things even harder for them right? Obviously we've got control of our borders and loads more money for the nhs though, so swings and roundabouts I guess...
  • 6 4
@Rucker10: Majority in voting only counts when you vote. polling a 1000 people in a remain area doesnt really count for much which is why voting is so important. we live in a democracy which means that votes, even if you disagree, should be respected otherwise we are no better than a country with a dictatorship.

@oatkinso: I think its very unfortunate what has happend for sure but its no different from a rider from the USA or any other non-EU country wanting to compete in Europe. I dont think its wise to say that because one person in one industry is affected by brexit that brexit is a bad idea. the fact of the matter is that it has happend and no matter how annoyed people are its still a done deal.

Best just get on with it and make it the best you can Smile
  • 26 4
@Rucker10: polls aren't referendums though are they? Most polls are wrong to one degree or another. If they weren't then why would we bother with elections?

Brexit on the whole hasn't worked out amazingly well but it hasn't worked out particularly badly either despite all the whinging. The UK economy remains one of the strongest in the world and they have managed to open up well before other countries due to their autonomy on vaccine purchasing. I'm so sick of hearing from people who talk about the EU as if it is some sort of benevolent actor that only does good and seeks to protect its citizens. The EU is behind some of the dodgiest and most reckless trade agreements in history. Not to mention the actions that the ECB and EU commission took during the last recession against countries like Greece, Ireland, Cyprus, Spain and Italy. There was a recent poll in my country which asked people how much they trusted local politicians (24%) and how much they trusted EU leaders (49%). Why? They can't even name most EU leaders and they know nothing of their background.

There is f*cking no logic to it. The only difference is that people don't follow or understand what goes on in the EU parliament. EU leaders are even more unaccountable than our local politicians and come from exactly the same political bloodlines. Why on earth would they be more trustworthy? The grass is always greener I suppose....

The inability of the average person to use any sort of critical thinking is the biggest problem facing the world.
  • 5 3
@harvUK: I'm struggling to see any industries that are doing better right now, and I bet Covid's currently just masking how bad Brexits actually going to be. re your point to @rucker10, it should never have been a 50/50 vote because if its a close vote (like it was) its not definitive in the slightest, hence why we have hung parliament's for elections.
  • 16 4
@oatkinso: I have generally found that remainers will not accept a y argument other than "all brexiteers are retarded little englander idiot xenophobes".

I have had discussions with friends about Brexit and it literally always comes back to them saying how stupid every single person voted for Brexit is. And how all the clever people (like themselves) voted to remain. Generally they tend to know very little about the EU themselves but they sure know that everyone who disagrees with them is really, really stupid and they like to tell them.

Then when the conversation moves on to America they will say exactly the same thing about Trump voters, Orban voters, Le Pen voters, etc, etc. They will then usually talk about how terrible all the polarisation of politics around the world is without even the faintest sense of irony.
  • 1 0
 @Fix-the-Spade: Bang on Sir!
  • 2 0
@oatkinso: Politics goes around in circles, being liberal is hard as the extremes will always polarise people and get the popular vote.
I mad a "generalisation" based on the published figures and where the majority of the vote sat (lets rename the generalisation as a fact shall we).
The best thing about internet terms and 2021 is the use of the English language to meet your narrative rather than look accept the facts.

  • 9 1
@humoroususername: I definitely agree that the high-horsie-ness of the far left does nothing to unite anyone, its completely self defeating like you say. But on Brexit, it was, and it still is very difficult to find people who could give you a reason for voting Brexit that wasn't driven by fear and the danger of the 'foreigner', largely egged on by our right-wing press and Farage (the cowardly little prick). The vast majority of the leave vote was driven by these arguments, so its no surprise that people say it was!

@ROOTminus1: that all depends on your definition of racism doesn't it? The people who voted leave invariably are more likely to come from areas where immigration has been a factor. And wealthy remain voters usually live in ethnically homogenous areas. The richer and more "woke" you are the more unlikely it is that you will mix socially with people of other races.

That is true in the US, it's true in the UK and everywhere else. Its very easy to say everyone else is racist when the people making the decisions about immigration and cultural values clashing never have to deal with the consequences. The most impoverished demographic by a long distance in the UK are young white males in the old industrial towns. They are the same people who will be told they have white privilege by someone who has never left South London.

Basically they have been left behind. Of course they aren't going to do what the establishment wants them to. Why should they?

The red-top papers, the TV infesting shit-stains like Farrage and Morgan, and now-PM BoJo all fuelled a jingoistic rhetoric that the results of our own incompetent gov't, and the toxic hangover of our colonial past was all somehow the fault of Brussels/Strasbourg/Merkel/Macron.

www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/blog/covid-vaccine-decisions-brexit

"The UK could have followed the same course of vaccine action if it were an EU member
That said, none of these successes can be chalked up to Brexit. As the chief executive of the MHRA swiftly pointed out, Mr Hancock was wrong to say that the UK could approve the vaccine early because it was no longer subject to EU rules. The MHRA’s decision was taken in accordance with the relevant EU legislation, which allows member states to grant temporary authorisation for a medicinal product in response to the spread of infectious diseases (among others). [1] This legislation still applies to the UK until the end of the transition period. Any EU member state could have used the same provision of the legislation to approve the vaccine. They decided not to for political and technical reasons, not legal ones.

Similarly, the member states were in no way obliged to take part in the EU’s joint vaccine procurement scheme. The EU has very limited competences for public health under its founding treaties: it can take action only to “support, coordinate or supplement the actions of the Member States”. The EU member states in this case voluntarily decided to opt into the joint procurement scheme. If one or more of them had decided to follow the UK’s path and procure its own vaccines, no one would have stopped them."

@Fix-the-Spade: EU coutries had to pool their rollout. which meant no one country could use more vaccines than another. the EU dragged their feet and didnt order any vaccines until months after we did which meant teh EU had to come up with a million and one excuses as to why they didnt have enough with them finally threatening to illegally take our supply direct from teh factory.

If we werent going through brexit then we would of been part of this rollout and super slow response. But as such we decided not to be involved with teh procurement scheme which is something Labour really wanted us to do.
  • 23 1
@harvUK: Firstly, EU countries did not have to pool their rollout. As a matter of fact Germany, France, Hungary Slovakia, Demark and Austria have been going their own way. Meanwhile Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are not member states, but signed up to the EU's vaccine program anyway, because they could.
.
Secondly, the EU did not threaten to withhold the UK's vaccine supply. Ursula von der Leyen (President of EU Commision) actually said that if any countries blocked supply of vaccines into the EU, the EU would make a reciprocal move and block vaccines leaving the EU to them. The entire 'EVIL EUROPE THREATENS TO KEEP THE JAB FOR ITSELF,' was the British press doing what the British Press often do and making things up.

That actually is part of the problem. To pull up one of my favourite quotes "one of the most fundamental mistakes we make as humans is assuming everyone else is basically just like us".
  • 3 0
@Lemmyschild: who are you arguing "at the start" with?

The claim was ine person was labelled racist for closing down flights from China, which he was.

Check your ego.

  • 2 0
@TotalAmateur: He may well be, but we're not talking about Biden. What you've just done is called whataboutism Wink
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: LOL! you are arguing something totally different! I like how you COMPLETELY AVOIDED the fact that he was called racist for shutting the country down.
Democrats: YOU CAN"T SHUT THE COUNTRY DOWN IT'S RACIST, COVID ISN'T THAT BAD!
Democrats a week later: WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! TRUMP DIDN'T SHUT THE BORDER DOWN SOON ENOUGH! OH GOD!!!

Lol democrats are just goldfish at this point that can't remember their arguments from the previous day and only accept what's fed into their bs tank by their handlers, aka MSM

If you look back I never claimed Trump had it under control, I just said dems called him a racist for doing something they later said he didn't do fast enough.

Nice straw man though, that's how every democrat argues nowadays, why defend your own ideas when you can attack something I never said Smile
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: I never said that though, I said being in the country gives me a better understanding of the threats/challenges of living here than it does for someone out of state, not that living in a certain state taps me into the zeitgeist of our entire country. I'm not saying I know more how the country feels than you do, I'm saying I know more about our border situation than you do. I live right next to it, traverse it frequently, and have local coverage. What do you have, CNN?
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: What was he going to say exactly? "Hey we're taking measures but FYI a lot of people are going to die". I'd love to hear an armchair qb take on how you or any other critic would have handled the lockdown better with a national news syndicate and every democrat opposing your every action/word.
but hey trump bad and old racist biden good right?
Simp.

  • 1 0
@redrook: lol as if that derails the convo? nope. Since we're establishing that the current president is also racist, then it begs the question why we care to accuse trump of being one? The democrats obviously approve of old racist white guys, so what's their beef with Trump being one exactly?
Hopefully that helps.
  • 1 0
@sonuvagun: total amatuer is arguing "at the start."
  • 1 0
@TotalAmateur: who cares if he was called a racist?
That's such a weak complaint. The guy was president; allegedly a billionaire. Powerful man, everyone agrees. Goes on and on about how strong he is and the tremendous power of the Presidency. Brags how how he doesn't care what people say in the fake news, etc, etc. People were calling him racist years ago. But now it matters?
Are you really trying to argue Trump had a good response to covid? He lost the Presidency over it.
  • 1 3
@Lemmyschild: LOL! he lost the presidency because we had arguably the most corruptable election ever. We spent 4 years investigating Trumps victory and about 2 seconds investigating all of the suspicious AF activity surrounding Bidens election. I mean the head of the USPS union came out to support a bipartisan candidate, in a year with the highest mail in voting. Let that sink in, would you feel comfortable were the tables turned?

And my entire point is that you and every other democrat are trying to argue that he didn't handle it well, when it's clear if we followed the democrat lead we would have ignored the severity and got more people killed, and all the dems are doing are continuing Trumps playbook. Did Biden bring the vaccine to market? No, he just distributed them, unless you think the guy that can't read a teleprompter somehow has the wherewithall to materialize millions of vaccines from nothing.

I would love to hear how you would have handled anything differently, with the level of opposition and scrutiny. Please enlighten us, oh knower of proper lockdown protocols.
Seriously how has Biden donen anything different? Your argument defeats itself at every turn as soon as you look at the historical facts.

And I love how you're acting like 'so what it's just namecalling' when essentially that's what liberals complained about for years, lol. hey we have a senile old racist in the white house that is disintegrating the economy by the minute, but at least he doesn't write mean tweets! Just don't investigate his back door dealings or weird kid obsession....
  • 1 1
@Lemmyschild: the left saying Trump didn't do enough for the vaccine but Biden did is like saying UPS made your Iphone not Apple because they're the ones who handed it to you. LOL, you must be lemmys child bc only a severe alcoholic parent explains your complete lack of information or awareness.

My apologies. That said, what time frame would you define as "the start" of Covid19 from an American perspective?
  • 2 1
@sonuvagun: don't bother trying to reason, he's just going to say the usual "trump bad, he should have done better". lemmy has no answer for how anyone could have handled it better. he's saying trump didn't act soon enough when you had people like Pelosi encouraging people to go out and shop in China town because 'it's a racist scare tactic'. lemmy is just doing what every democrat is doing now and refusing to acknowledge that they may have overreacted and don't have the answers, while insisting you are wrong and your answers are wrong. If trump did everything wrong why are the only suggestions/action items Biden has suggested, exactly what Trump did already?
  • 1 0
@sonuvagun: re read again.....i'm not gonna lead you to everything.
Done.
  • 2 0
@TotalAmateur: Oh wow, all caps, last refuge for the triggered.
As to the election being corrupted: more bullshit winger talking points. Not even the judges Trump appointed could take the "evidence" Rudy and the krackens came up with seriously. Not even Trump's hand picked AG would take their ludicrius claims seriously.Or does Pillow Boy have all the real evidence? Lol.
He lost because he sucked as a president and he sucked as a president because he is a broken human. One term loser. Huuuuuuuuuge.
  • 3 0
@TotalAmateur: "And about 2 seconds investing all of the suspicious AF activity surrounding Biden's election."

What suspicious activity? Republican judges, republican senators, everyone except for a handful of fascist Trump supporters agree it was one of the most secure elections that has ever taken place.
  • 2 0
 @TotalAmateur: you're f*cking blind.
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: Trump's own election security guy said it was good. So Trump fired him. It's not a secret or anything.

Ok. y'all are the biggest hypocrites imaginable lol. SF, LA, Portland, Austin, Chicago, f*cking disasters.

 @friendlyfoe: thefederalist.com/2021/07/29/postal-union-that-endorsed-biden-says-covid-vaccine-mandates-not-the-role-of-the-federal-government
so in a year with the highest mail in voting (pushed by dems bc somehow rioting was safe but voting wasn't), the union for MAIL CARRIERS AND DELIVERERS came out in support of a bipartisan candidate. can you honestly say that democrats wouldn't be having literal mental breakdowns if these same circumstances surrounded the trump election? and if we're so sure it was a legit election, why did they shut down even the probes into the case? again, glaring hypocrisy mixed with idiocy, and now half the people that supported that biden are regretting it and the other half are playing dumb like their burning house is fine lol,.
  • 1 0
@TotalAmateur: no. "Most secure election" from Trump's own handpicked elections supervisor. Getta grip. Plenty of violent GQP jurisdictions out there. Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina highest violent crime rates in the country, all red states. You really need a new narrative.
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: per cap maybe, but also you're just focusing on violent crime rate. how about income disparity, quality of life, homelessness rate, pollution rate, etc. there is literally an app to report human feces in SF. I'll go to any of the places you listed over LA and SF lol. Why am I going to listen to a couple of people giving input when no formal investigation has gone on? why are people so opposed to investigating this election? Wouldn't you welcome it?
  • 1 1
@TotalAmateur: the exact same local governmemt entities and election boards that examined and certified Trump's election in 2016 examined and certified Bidens win in 2020. You can't get around the fact that Trump appointed judges threw out his "evidence" because it wasnt actually evidence of anything.

Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and a bunch of ther red states, dead last.

www.security.org/resources/homeless-statistics

But yeah a poop app for S.F.....

@Lemmyschild: lol ya god forbid people storm the capitol, way better when the burn and loot their neighborhoods but don't hurt our politicians! dem values are so f*cked lol.
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: dude you can't use gini coefficient to just touch on income disparity, it's a coefficient built off of several variables. this is pointless arguing if you're going to warp every response to refute a point that I haven't made lol. if you're honestly happy with Biden as a president especially with his past month of f*ck ups then you're either a sadist or an idiot, I'll leave you figure out where you are.
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: ah the old attack the source not the content, top notch rebuttal sir. also, here is a better study done on income disparity and lo and behold, New york number 1.
www.epi.org/publication/income-inequality-in-the-us
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: welp not gonna lie I typed a big ol response with a bunch of stats and then I closed the tab on accident and I honestly don't care enough about educating the ignorant so I'll keep it to A) that's not how you use a gini coefficient you dolt, income disparity is just a variable in that equation and the end result is not indicative solely of any of the variables. So there is your first fail.
b) quality of life ties directly into the per capita discussion so I think it's important to note that in states with higher overall wealth, you still have a greater number of homeless, which shows the old 'bleeding heart' dem values are obviously not matriculating into the physical world, whereas the states you mentioned are poor to begin with and there are a litany of historical reasons for that.
c) violent rapes are highest in border states, just like homelessness, interesting, almost like super weak borders during a viral pandemic and drug epidemic are a bad idea.....do dems care about unvaxxed illegals? and the bubonic plague has been found in Skid Row. And with how blue Austin is, not surprised about that one.

Don't worry Brohan. Mexico DID pay for the free wall, Your boy WAS Man of the year in Michigan. George Washington DID take over the airports during the revolutionary war. And Ivanka? Oh yeah. "She does have a very nice figure... If [Ivanka] weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her."
  • 1 0
@Lemmyschild: lol are you this thick? I said you can't use the Gini coefficient to represent a cities standing based on one variable. If you don't understand what the Gini is why did you use it? And ya, New york has the highest income inequality, that was my point. Are you huffing glue over there or something?
  • 1 2

  • 2 2

Is he causing massive inflation? Check. Is he leaving the borders open for potential thousands of unvaccinated illegal immigrants to come into the country? Check. Did he go back to putting kids in cages? Check. Did he effectively eliminate female competitive sports by allowing transgender athletes to compete as women? Check. Did he have shady business dealings through surrogate family members? Check. Can he barely complete a coherent sentence? Check. Can he fall UP stairs? Check. I can go on forever lol, this guy is a f*cking walking meme and any dem who still supports him is either on that good glue or just too stubborn to admit they effed up. Or they just aint black!
  • 1 1
@TotalAmateur: Biden was not the choice of candidate for a LOT of people who voted democrat, but the fact that literally anyone thinks leaving Trump in power would be a good idea is beyond reason. I don't know how to tell you this but as soon as you've picked a side you're already wrong.
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: lol ya that darned booming economy was SO TERRIBLE! name 3 things that have improved since Biden took office. I'll wait. You essentially voted someone out because you are spoon fed hysteria media that fixated on every little thing Trump did, from mean tweets to shutting down travel during COVID that he was later called racist for. I don't know how to tell you this but you bought the bridge, you drank the coolaid, you swallowed the hook line and sinker, and you support a total stinker lol. the only thing Biden has on trump is that he doesn't put out targeted tweets but that's more because the guy can't form a coherent sentence without someones hand up his ass working his mouth. seriously democrats should be ashamed of themselves having this guy in office is borderline elder abuse. PS i love how you can't defend/refute anything I said and you just have to resort to "orange man bad". you are a perfect representation of your ideas.

@TotalAmateur: Trump took over an already booming economy and did nothing to improve it further. Tax cuts to corporations and the rich have created a massive deficit that is 100% his fault. The fact that you don't realize that is part of the problem. Like I said if you've picked a side you're already wrong.

Oh and most of the growth under Trump was in the form of tax cuts to corporations so now you have no money to fix your bridges and educate your population, both things you're desperately in need of.

@harvUK: So glad we can now go and get free trade agreements with tiny economies on the other side of the planet, rather than the absolutely huge one right on our doorstep.
The money saved by having free trade with Albania an Cameroon totally offsets the cost of tariffs to continue accessing our largest (and closest) export market, that the country's economy has spent 40 years growing around.
Not to mention the environmental impact of trying to trade with countries 1000s of miles away, rather than on the doorstep.

All come about because Cameron wanted to sweep up a few right wing votes from UKIP, and the lies, scaremongering and right wing propaganda managed to swing a tiny majority.

I'm not pro-Brexit, by a long way, believe me, but isn't this just one guy who didn't plan his time properly? Other UK riders have got there fine. Yes, pre-Brexit a UK citizen could travel how they wanted within the EU, which we'll all miss at some point, but now it takes just a little more planning and forward thinking. If you travel else where in the world you also have to plan accordingly and get the right documents. To his final point, there are plenty of good training facilities in the UK - if perhaps a bit wetter in the winter/spring - but they're not slowing the other guys down.

hard to plan when the people you need to confirm things don't know themselves. Add in being a freelancer (some may well not be), pre-season, changing rules (see the German internship rules etc) and you can see why it might be a struggle. if you're a lone outfit, getting your head around all this is not going to be easy - other (bigger) teams will have people dedicated to this sort of thing (T-Mo does it for all of TFR for example)

@SATN-XC: TLDR version is Scotland would have left the EU when it left the UK.  @harvUK: Spain only threatened to veto because they don't want Catalan and Basque regions getting ideas of independence. The Scots had a better claim of rejoining the EU as an independent nation than many other applicant countries have
  • 1 0
@harvUK: As the result of the referendum shows, we didn't. So your implication of my hypocrisy is based on what? One of the main reasons a majority voted to remain in the UK was because we were in the EU and so a need for change in the status quo was not necessary.
  • 1 0
@SATN-XC: Yes you are correct, if Scotland had voted for independence in 2014 we would have most likely remained in the EU, or had an expedited application which would have coincided with the separation date.

If we gained independence now we would have to apply for membership as any other country would.

@redrook: well I guess I'm still a bit lost on the requirements. Seems like they should just check his passport and move on? and tbh if this racer is a professional, they should have the full run down of travel requirements already. I mean the odds of them racing somewhere in the EU are pretty high, so idk why you'd leave something like that undone.
  • 1 0
@TotalAmateur: Well no because we're not in the EU anymore, so he needs a visa to work there, which was not a requirement before. Checking his passport and moving on was what they could have done prior to Brexit.
I totally agree they (the UK) should have, but it's all a gaint clusterf**k. They should have done a lot of things but this isn't on the EU, it's on the UK. We should have arranged and planned for so many things but we have not.
  • 1 0
@redrook: ahh well then could he easily enter with just a passport if it wasn't a work trip?
  • 2 0
@TotalAmateur: No, as the article says "As Jamie is self-employed, contracted to his team as a freelancer, he was travelling as a tourist and was only allowed to spend 90 days out of 180 Visa-free". The issue is that he now does not have a visa to work there, which is now required because we're not in the EU. Prior to Brexit a visa was not required because people could move around and work freely within the EU.
  • 1 0
@redrook: ahh I see thanks for the breakdown. Well hopefully someone concedes, it seems like the rest of the EU is cutting its nose off to spite its face. I get the UK is sort of the genesis of this f*ck up but if someone is making it harder for you to do business idk if making it harder on yourself to spite them is the move.

Ze bloody Germans! Work work work...

A real shame this hasn't worked out for Jamie yet, and even more so because he was/is on top of the paperwork he needs to file. Stay healthy mate!

4000 comments later..... I might be the first person to say that its a real shame he had to miss the race.

As soon as I saw the article I groaned at the thought of a whole bunch of people from different nations who mostly voted for populism enjoying seeing populism failing in another country.

Laughing from your ivory tower as your own country slides into authoritarian rule (Poland) or your country politicised vaccines and left millions to their fate in Afghanistan while they beat their brows about crazy right wing idiots invading your capitol buildings or sitting on 6x the number of vaccines you need to cover your population (thats you Canada) and not sharing is simply the height of hypocrisy.

Enjoying other peoples misfortune is uncilvilised. This was an article about an athlete not getting a visa. Other British riders did, because they have big teams and managers to do it, so its not necessarily a Brexit issue.

Anyone would think Pinkbike put the word brexit in the header because of the desire to get a bunch of comments on the article......

brexit, injurys and whatever else. Pinkbike front page filling up with loads of racers not being able to race this weekend.

 Time for an Irish passport

 Time for a Scottish passport

Of all the reasons: injury, illness, covid, etc, this is the dumbest reason forcing someone to miss a race.

All this Brexit talks can be summed up in a Croatian proverb:
"Poslije jebanja nema kajanja."

It roughly translates to: "No regrets after f*****g."

croatians are gorgeous though it's no wonder there are rarely regrets lol

" As he had been training in Europe in the pre-season and then doubling up racing the World Cups and EWS he exceeded this limit and was left trying to find other ways to gain entry."

so his own fault then - should have came back to the UK to save the days and apply for a visa sooner.

Also isn't he breaking the law using a tourist visa to and then "working".

Or Leave this crap hole for good.......

@nojzilla: well we are trying but Boris is scared Wink

As hard as it is for the youngsters to hear these days... you are correct. Sometimes the youngsters have to accept responsibility and accountability for their actions rather than looking to blame someone else. Its a life lesson, harsh as that sounds, getting things wrong is all part of growing up.

I’d always planned to get a visa, that was the plan otherwise I wouldn’t have ridden my dh bike till may because of COVID restrictions.

I’m paid in the uk, pay taxes in the uk and live in the uk. I get paid for “marketing services” not to actually race specifically. If I’d been able to get a work visa I would have but I’d need to be employed by an eu company, living in Europe, paying tax there and making minimum wage for said country.

 @jamieedmondson:
I know its a pants situation with Brexit and COVID and the restrictions that has imposed but now we no longer have the freedom of borderless travel in the EU we have hoops to jump through for what was once simple travel. Sucks as it messes with nice winter holidays for so many!

Did you not know the visa situation or suspect what it might be in advance before you went over to Europe for part of the off season?
  • 4 0
@betsie: I knew as much as I could have known from emails with the consulate and online research, my appointment to apply was the day I got home so I couldn’t have planned it much more but even when I was at the consulate they didn’t really know what I could or should be applying for
  • 1 0
 @jamieedmondson:
Do you know now what to apply for and the timelines involved and the probability of success?
If you had not have travelled over winter to train in Europe would you be ok still now?

Its a shame that the team could not have helped you out with more information or advice/support. The "your on your own" message seems to be prevalent in some companies, having been on both sides of the travel support infrastructure whilst working in R&D for one of the worlds largest companies and one of the largest oil and gas service companies, the differences in company help is unbelievable across companies.

I hope that you can get something sorted for the future, its great for this area having elite riders from the area and promoting the sport, but we need you racing and getting results.
  • 3 0
@jamieedmondson: This is the problem. You contact government agencies to ask pertinent questions and no one can give you an answer because nothing has been thought through. It's a cluster f*ck of magnificent proportions. It must be crap for someone in your situation, best of luck for the rest of the season.
  • 3 0
@betsie: In future I plan to never step into a visa office if I can avoid it.

There still isn’t a visa option that works without the work of a lot of people (you have to get a eu company to give you a job basically)

If I hadn’t gone abroad to train in the off season I would be okay now but would have had very little bike time before when the races should have started.

The team went above and beyond to help me how they could but there’s only so much they can do.

Unfortunately I can see the north of Scotland losing its elite riders in the future as there’s little to no downhill in the winter so it’s hard to compete with those down south and abroad

 @jamieedmondson:
Road riding went the same way for riders up here, then Dh for a while folk would look to move to Inners. Even that doesnt look like as good an option as Wales is with the quantity of tracks in Wales.
Shame as we have so many hills up here, just not the weather of foot fall on them to facilitate tracks everywhere. Maybe the mast does, but that is about it. Imagine an uplift service there, would be so good.
  • 2 2
Wonder if all those ranting about Brexit etc have considered how it is that the other riders who do similar training routines in Europe have managed To be in Slovenia.
  • 2 0
It reads as him being self employed, rather than getting a salary from a team, is the difference here. Presumably none of the other British privateers have clocked up as much time in Europe as he has.
  • 1 0
 That's explained in the article.

There's quite a few US throwing mud at the British for voting in Boris. Cough Trump, cough Bush..

After reading some of the absolute shite above I hope Pinkbike do put this behind a paywall. Just saying...

f*ck you if you voted to leave! You are a racist idiot. All it’s done since it’s happened (as we knew it would) is f*ck everything up.
  • 4 3
How does voting leave make one racist??
  • 1 0
@dotman: if you don't understand how then it means you're a racist.

-That is the actual thought process.
  • 2 0
 @sonuvagun:
Here I am wondering about all the European countries that aren’t in the European Union in the first place because they never opted in…all racist ?

Or is it all Bullshit and shouldn’t even be brought to mention in mountain biking, just go shred ffs
  • 1 0
@sonuvagun: just curious as to which race I have descriminated by voting to leave the European Union? Its an unelected parliament of failed politicians ffs
  • 1 0
@dotman: As opposed to an elected parliament of failed politicians.
  • 1 0
@commental: at least its one less level of failed politicians
  • 1 0
@dotman: that was full-blown sarcasm on my end.
