How to watch the 2021 Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole

Aug 23, 2021
by James Smurthwaite
Lauryne Chappaz left her opposition trailing in her roost by over 46 seconds.

Red Bull TV may be the official broadcaster for the Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB World Cup but they aren't the only official global broadcaster for the 2021 World Championships. The UCI sells all its World Championships in one package so if a broadcaster wants to show the road event then they get the mountain biking included as part of the deal too. Unfortunately, mountain biking isn't as high ticket as some other disciplines so often it can be broadcast by those channels after the fact or on an unusual station.

In many instances, the broadcast licensing agreements allow Red Bull to broadcast the World Championship XC and DH races, and in those places, you will be able to watch the World Championships as you would during any World Cup race weekend. Globally, however, it's a bit of patchwork as some countries are not included, most notably the USA, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

The list may still change as last minute deals get done but, as of our publishing date, here’s the full list of countries where the World Championships will be broadcast on Red Bull TV:

That's it. I'm moving to Burkina Faso.

I heard that headhunters in Afganistan will welcome any western specialist with open hands.

Grease the right palms with a few West African Francs and you'll be racing, not watching
  • 4 1
That's it. I'm getting a free VPN through the Opera browser or I'm going to pay $4.00 for a real VPN service!

@lkubica: yup. One way flights available from USA.

Pre-Outside+ PB would have not only mentioned the annual VPN option, but also published a VPN How-To for Rickys.

We remember....Husker Du?
  • 1 1
Hmmmm I wonder how I will watch this again hahahahahahahah
  • 1 1
I Would too, if it wasn’t cartooned.
  • 1 1
 @stephenllama: I'll expect a chicken dinner first.
  • 1 2
@suspended-flesh: I figure people wouldn't need a biking website to explain it to them and I recall PB only doing that once or twice so it seems like you're trying to find something to complain about.
  • 1 1
@scott-townes: It was a joke. They had an extensive article pre-pandemic.

Wait til Friday there will be tons of Yanks and Canucks asking about VPNs.
  • 1 0
@RedBurn: I didn’t find anything in the program of the Vrt, did you?
  • 1 0
I have VPN, Tried it from a few servers still not working for RedbullTv. Any suggestions how to use without redbull? Can you use through a browser with say an Australian TV provider (apparently free there)

Looks like another 30 day risk free trail for a VPN again this year!

 Big-VPN runs North America.
  • 5 1
 Any recommendations?
  • 7 1
@sexley: I used epic browser the past two years with good success here in the US. No trial necessary
  • 5 1
@sexley: Express VPN, used them last year, 30 risk free trial, I cancelled the day after the race.
  • 10 1
@sexley: If I remember correctly, I used Opera browser last year and it worked well. Free download.
  • 2 1
@tim-from-pa: Epic is still downloaded from last year and should be good to go, plus 1!
  • 1 1
 @sexley: Mullvad is my go-to.
  • 5 1
@TheArbez: Yep. I used Opera too. And the VPN button is easy to spot and simple.
  • 4 2
Opera browser has vpn, no trial or subscriptions
  • 2 1
@sexley: I use Tunnel Bear for this event, like it a lot. User friendly, works well, and there's a free trial (it just gives you a data cap, should be enough to watch the whole event)
  • 10 1
@src248: Tunnel Bear sounds like something adults use in the lonely hours....
  • 1 1
@sexley: watch party at your place? lol I used opera last year and it was a good feed.
  • 1 1
@Korbi777: can you cast it on a smart tv from phone?
  • 1 1
@makripper: @Korbi777 I dont think its gonna work because your TV is connected to your Wifi which doesnt use VPN. It happend to me when I was using Chromecast via my notebook. but give it a go. I had to connect my laptop with my tv with hdmi cabel...
  • 1 1
@Pichyforum: I did it with my MacBook direct to my tv but therres got to be a lazier way lol
  • 1 0
@makripper: yes if your router will let you change the VPN settings (most will if you dive into the menus through the browser login). Some TVs will also let you change DNS settings for using something like Getflix rather than a full VPN

Flosports looks like a complete dumpster fire. Never trust a website that does NOT put the price front and center. Asking me to create a log in before telling me the price? Yea you can go right ahead and F yourselves.
  • 4 1
@flosports broadcasts a lot of high school travel sports like basketball, volleyball, softball and semi-pro sports leagues broadcast on it. They're a legit sight, but they don't give you anything without you giving them your info. Beer
  • 5 0
I used flosports last year. Commentary was the shits. They ran the cameras the whole time so got to see a bunch of riders with no commentary. Missed most of Reece’s run. I complained about quality after cancelling and got refunded.
It’s still some bs that worlds is blocked for selected countries to have sub par coverage by a third party broadcaster.
  • 3 0
I saw the same thing. Have to either create an account or go through a hundred links just to find a price. Anytime the price isn’t prominently displayed you know it’s a rip off. If they really thought they were giving customers a good deal they would want to display the price right up front.
  • 27 0
 Who the F is FloSports?
  • 24 0
 flosports? well, kiss my grits!
  • 2 0
 www.flobikes.com

They have the rights for Le Tour in Canada. They are more well known in the Jujitsu/Wrestling world with flograppling and flowrestling
  • 2 0
Interested to see, $150 to join the cycling channel streaming service.
  • 6 1
Cheesy company trying to cash in on free to air Euro footage while adding crap commentary. GCN Race Pass and a VPN is a far better alternative.
  • 1 0
@pcloadletter: that $150 applies to all their rights catalog for other sports too. I'm not much for watching road, but I do watch grappling and track & field events
  • 2 0

@savagelake: time for "kiss my grits!" to make a comeback! Or, simply catch on, if it was never something warranting a comeback.

I use Opera browser. VPN works great. Plus you get to avoid Google, so there's that too.
  • 2 0
@Kyleponga: I'd be careful, the Opera platform isn't what it used to be. I'd not put any trust in them being any better than Google these days.
  • 1 0
Tried Opera on a chromebook. Set it to Europe, which should have be open based on the geoblocking list (it appered to set my location to the netherlands). No dice.

Maybe it works better with a PC or mac?
  • 14 0
Time for your NOrd vpn free trial
  • 1 0
Nord works great and has a FireTV app. So you can choose a country easily and it really opens streaming options beyond just cycling.
  • 9 0
Pinkbike should set up a VPN and live stream it on something, post it on the homepage for us not tech savy people
  • 50 6
Only available to Outside+ members, sorry

@Mr-Gilsch: James actually texted me an hour before the article popped up. Getting texted by Pinkers is a new perk of Outside+, they call it PMS

I don't care about any of this. can I get angry about something else? open to suggestions.

How about when people don't put their shopping cart back
  • 4 0
I can't understand why the UCI insists on selling these world championships as a package. The larger networks that are picking this stuff up are clearly only doing so for the road cycling, and likely aren't paying much of a premium on top of that for the MTB to be included. With that said, you would think that they would separate it and allow Redbull to broadcast the MTB portion for free. I would think the exposure to the sport would be more beneficial long term than the likely small amount of money they are making from the rights fees for this one event.
  • 6 1
So us in the UK have to watch via BBC? Will they have warner commentating? I don't care what website I have to use to watch the stream as long as Warner is there.
  • 13 0
The UK is included but you have to watch on the 'English language only' stream and not through the normal Red Bull TV route. You can bookmark it here: www.redbull.com/int-en/events/uci-mountain-bike-world-championships-val-di-sole-english-only
  • 1 0
UK is on the list Smile
  • 4 0
You can watch on Redbull, but you also have the option to watch on the BBC with terrible commentary.
  • 1 0
Last year, the BBC coverage was on the websiite, and Red button; it wasn't Warner, but the world feed - which was a lot better than the Olympic commentary.
  • 1 0
Ah, didn't see UK in the other section, just skimmed through. I'll be watching on Red Bull then
  • 1 0
Here's a link to the BBC times if your watching it that way rather then RB TV

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000z7nx/broadcasts/upcoming
  • 1 0
 @jamessmurthwaite: Under-rated post!
  • 1 0
 @jamessmurthwaite: nice one!
Do you know if Rob is commentating?
  • 3 0
@jamessmurthwaite: 'English language only ' - so not Warner. Heh heh.
  • 1 0
@jamessmurthwaite: better take Australia of the redbull.tv list.

It has now been geo-blocked
  • 2 0
@JBW450: I know. Fk u UCI! Who is tje broadcaster in Australia?!! Aargh!!
  • 2 0
 @JBW450: Can confirm.

@jamessmurthwaite Knock Australia off the list.
  • 2 0
@professed: sbs. Commentary will be awful. Will be a roadie and a token xc guy with no idea about DH
  • 6 0
Watch live with 7k MTB fans at the GT Bicycles Malverns Classic this Sunday!
  • 1 0
That event looks awesome! Wish we had more like that in the US.
  • 1 0
 Thats where i'll be watching!
  • 3 0
Redbull TV now showing stream as blocked to your Geo-location in Australia. SBS On Demand is streaming the XC and DH but my confidence is lacking as it refers to the DH as Downhill Country... Maybe they are all racing Down Country bikes this year?
  • 2 0
Absolutely ludicrous this rule - the entire idea of broadcasting is to get as many views as possible? Yet you can't even watch it in the Uk or other country's where downhill mountain biking is super popular. We have to watch it on Demand, meaning we will probably find out the results beforehand absolutely the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of Geo-restrictions that is, absolute madness.
  • 5 0
 Switzerland: embargo 1 hour

*insert „why can‘t you just be normal“ meme*
  • 1 0
What the f*ck that means anyway ? We can only watch one hour later ? Or just one hour in total ?
  • 2 0
@Altair74: based on this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_embargo i'd say swiss can only watch on rb tv w/ 1h delay - probably since the live rights were bought by SRF SSR...
  • 1 0
The women's race is going to be live on SRF2 from 12:45 -13:55. And you get Adrian Arnet (who?) and maybe Frischknecht instead of Rob Warner and Tracey Hannah...There's nothing in the schedule about the men, though. Maybe the men are going to be on a livestream on srf.ch.
  • 1 0
@vies: No Swiss men racing, so no SRF broadcast. Too bad. - I'll rather watch with Warner commenting, even it's +1h
  • 1 0
So, the one hour embargo should be over by now here in Switzerland. But redbull.com still doesn't show me the live stream, it continues to be "... not available in your country". Mad!
  • 2 0
Funny how NBC lost the rights in the USA, I remember they would not stream the world champs and only play it live at 3 am or something like that a week later. Now Flosports has the rights, but they are, in my opinion, a predatory stream service.
  • 8 2
Afghanistan have it so good right now.
  • 2 0
Norwegians have it all. Mountains, oil, good roads, money, expensive beer and DH world champs. Luckily there is VPN so I can be a norwegian for a day. Too bad it only gives me the world champs.
  • 2 1
If it makes you feel any better, just VPN via Saudi Arabia, which also has mountains, oil, good roads, money, expensive beer and DH world champs, and be a Saudi for a day.
  • 3 0
Well over here we got mountains,no oil, decent roads, little money, cheap beer,DH world champs AND a climate that let's you ride year round. And you're welcome.
  • 5 0
 It’s being broadcast in Afghanistan…WTF?
  • 20 2
No public stonings scheduled that day.
  • 9 0
The only thing more important than a country wide takeover is World Cup DH.
  • 1 0
If you go to Red Bull.com and your proxy shows up Afghanistan then yes you can watch. It’s not like it’s being promoted
  • 1 0
It’s not being broadcast in Afghanistan specifically. It’s being broadcast in the internet by redbull, and if you are in Afghanistan you can watch it on the internet. Shocking I know, but they do have internet there.
  • 1 0
They can watch what mountainbiking is, I think they have a mountain or two, there are probably some possibilities to lure tourists for XC or DH.
  • 3 1
@pinkknip: Do a quick google search. There are people in Afghanistan who mountain bike.
  • 2 0
@commental: turns out consumption of Red Bull of allowed under the Taliban. How else were the Taliban so quick to overrun the country when intelligence and logic is not their specialty.
  • 3 0
@pinkknip: it’s funny you mention that; I’ve been thinking about a MTB bro trip to Afghanistan. I bet flights are cheap.
  • 1 0
Not sure why this is showing x3. My bad :-(
  • 4 0
Download Epic browser, www.epicbrowser.com set the proxy to a country where the live stream is available.
  • 1 0
epic wont play redbull on my PC Frown
  • 1 0
 Epic did it for me...
  • 4 0
Damn it ! Guess I’ll actually have to go out and ride instead of sitting around watching how fast I’ll never be.....
  • 1 0
TV Embargooo... Sucks cause in Spain they bouhght the rights the public TV and sure they won't transmit it live... or just when our riders cross the line like into the olimpics... shame.
  • 4 0
Literally no one will watch this on Flosports. Nice one.
  • 4 0
and here they say the internet brings the world together...
  • 3 0
This is not Flosports' fault. This is the UCI selling the rights to a high school sports broadcaster for an extra $5,000
  • 2 0
What i do most of the time anyway, just avoid social media (results) and watch the replays. Kinda stupid too avoid these profitable marketing areas..but what do I know.
  • 4 0
 get your VPN's ready!
  • 1 0
Any success to watch it using VPN?
Tried quite a few countries in their list but had no luck. (Using ExpressVPN)
Which country did you use?
  • 4 0
 whack.
  • 3 0
They dont know about us, good good.
  • 1 0
 Being small just paid off!
  • 9 9
Welp, knowing what a godforsaken dumpster fire the Red Bull TV website and app are, it would have been unlikely that I'd be able to find the races anyway.... I'm disappointed, but unfortunately am not surprised with this.
  • 2 0
The Redbull website is stupidly tricky to navigate but even more annoying is that my web enabled TV doesnt play the video feed from Redbull website and no App is available for my TV. But I would rather watch on redbull than flosports so I shall be wearing fashionable VPN trousers this week.
  • 3 1
Holy mother Mary! Austria is missing - Red Bull home country missing it all? Frown
  • 1 0
I noticed that too, would be a first though, wouldn't it? They always broadcasted it in the past couple of years.
  • 1 0
 @Rodeodave: well - unfortunately yes
  • 3 0
 According to this: www.redbull.com/at-de/uci-mtb-weltmeisterschaft-event-vorschau#1-wo-und-wie-bin-ich-live-mit-dabei

... you can watch all of the events on their website, as usual.
  • 1 0
 @roliK: cool thanks
  • 2 0
Afghanistan can stream the race on RebBull TV but the US can't. I'm totally flabbergasted!
  • 5 0
US tryed to bring freedom to Afghanistan, but has left before capitalism could take it away again.
  • 1 0
still seems odd that Flobikes wont sell a 1-3 month membership - instead of hardline on charging a full year up front. What they get is nobody willing to participate....
  • 2 0
Sbs better bloody come through in times like this or it’s Morrison’s head
  • 1 0
the redbull site is a complete mess. 20 minutes of digging around and eventually found this article linking to the magic URL that lets me watch it.
  • 3 0
 Not cool
  • 1 0
It doesn’t look like the BBC are showing it and although Eurosport have scheduled UK coverage.
  • 6 8
Why is Red Bull lagging so hard on anything American/Canadian? Red Bull Roof Ride. They made the non English stuff really easy to find and rebroadcasted all of it. English was harder and only parts of it. No best trick. No quailes. Etc.

Sorry but if I'm not mistaken most of the world still speaks English as a first or second language. When compared to you know... polish or German.
  • 8 1
Maybr because Red Bull is a Austrian Company where People speak German ? Or maybe because the broadcasting rights for the USA/Canada are not owned by Red Bull
  • 2 1
@RockCrawler: You're not wrong. My point was that broadcasting in the US/Canada is stupid. I didn't say anything about the block/geo blocking. It was an in general statement on things I've noticed over time.

And yes Red Bull started in Austria but they have Red Bull North America, Inc. That means they have a footprint in north america. And English doesn't just mean North America. English is still the most common language spoken world wide. Again... was talking about English content not geo blocked material. And it should not be too difficult for them to negotiate global access to media.

This is not a unique situation in geo blocking. It's common and it's an issue. It will becoming a bigger issue in the near future and will be a hot button issue for changes needing to be made internationally. This isn't a Red Bull issue. My point with Red Bull was Red Bull lagging on English content and they often do. Even when NOT geo blocked. In this case it's likely that Red Bull does NOT own the rights to the content. They lease it. So that content is regulated based on those copy right negotiations and who is and is not purchasing the content I would guess from UCI.

Want to get into Geo Blocking that's fine.

The US and Canada actually open copy right laws. That's why we're often held to these regulations more often than other places that don't GAF about copyright laws. UK is another place that it's a big issue currently. They have things in place to insure that tax payers get equal access. So all this Brexit stuff plays into that. I'm not a global economics expert so I can't really get into that.
  • 9 2
@onemanarmy: "most of the world still speaks English".

English has most first language + second language speakers of any language, but "most of the world" (83% in fact) does not speak English.
  • 1 2
@mi-bike: there's always gotta be that "Ackchyually" guy. right?
  • 1 0
@mi-bike: Good call. You're not wrong. Correct statement would have been the most common... for now.

Not in Portugal, but f*ck it´s broadcasting in Afghanistan for the people in the waiting lines at the airport!
  • 2 0
can any kiwis help me out with recommendations?

@dylansanderson2004: either a VPN and or try SBS Australia's On Demand but you'll have to change your location etc.
  • 1 0
Just signed up for a Sky subscription which I fully intend to cancel before the 7 day free trail expires. Watched the XCC last night, commentary was gash.. BSB, WTC, Euro Karting were enjoyable though!
  • 1 0
enough of this madness I am drinking that coca cola energy drink FU RED BUL
  • 1 0
Somehow there was no news here about rampage tickets selling out other day..?
  • 1 0
But the repeats after the live stream would be accesible worldwide or the TV embargos will remain in place??
  • 1 0
I wonder if at a later date RedBull will drop the GeoBlocking so we can see the races - after the fact.
  • 1 0
Yep Australia is restricted pity given how many Aussie riders we have!
  • 1 0
 Live on SBS apparently.
  • 1 0
So no replay on Red Bull either I guess? That's annoying.

  • 1 0
@deaner2: What vpn did you use?
  • 1 0
Not a crisis at all. Simply use a VPN to bypass Geo restrictions.
  • 1 0
 What The Broadcast?!?
  • 1 1
 Again? Are you kidding me?
  • 1 1
Yup cause tsn or sports net has the rights to them . So you can get a 15 min broadcast at 3am .

  • 1 0
 Hooray capitalism!
  • 1 0
Seems kinda like the entire sport is immersed in selling things at high cost: bikes particularly. Is that the capitalism you're talking about? Did you forage your entire bike from the forest behind yr house or something? Last I checked everything from frames, suspension, tires & wheels, bearings, lube, chains, brakes, pads, cables & housing (not even counting pads, clothing, helmets) etc was pretty pricy compared to just playing xbox. Not sure how capitalism matters w/ the broadcast but not for the mega-100's of millions bike industry which tends to be quite white & exclusive. Not busting here: just entirely confused. Are you just bartering everything?

@Mtn-Goat-13: It's not that it costs money, it's that you can't just buy what you want. Red Bull is willing to give them money, and in fact they they do all year long for the World Cups. But because the UCI wants maximum money (and not maximum eyeballs on the individual races), they abuse their power and bundle World Champs, forcing Red Bull to pay for stuff their audience doesn't want in order to get stuff they do want. It's the equivalent of going into a bike shop but not being able to buy just a single mountain bike, but instead only being able to get that bike by buying a (quite expensive) package that also includes a road bike, a TT bike, a BMX bike, a track bike, etc. That wouldn't stand in the physical world, but somehow it's ok for "broadcast rights"?

@Mtn-Goat-13: Some more analogies to go along with your list. What if you could only buy a chain as part of an entire drivetrain set, so when you wear out a chain, you have to buy at least a mech, a shifter, and a cassette, in order to get that chain?. Or what if you could only buy a helmet as part of a set that included a full-face, a trail half-shell, a road half-shell, and a time trial aero-shell? I'm more than willing to pay good money for a good helmet, but I'm not willing to pay for helmets that I don't need and won't use.

@justinfoil: Heay ya on all this (and fair enough). I was able to watch a bootleg streamed version nearly live and it was OK, but I found myself being pissed so yeah: yr right, it was about max $ and not max exposure. Pardon me being a dick (seriously). Ditto on the analogy too and by all means, please don't forage for bike parts in the woods! Doesn't last long and molds quickly.

 UCI, not Redbull.

@commental: Worlds are always screwy, UCI even uses different timing system/provider for worlds vs what they use for world cup rounds.
