Photo Epic: High Country - EWS Crested Butte, Practice Day

Racing in Colorado is unlike any other challenge on the EWS circuit. In previous years the series has landed in Winter Park, which by European standards is pretty damned high. For this year the venue has changed to Crested Butte and added on a whole stack of extra metres of altitude - and that's just the town itself, with the Big Mountain Crew taking the racing out into the backcountry peaks riders are going to get up to around the 4,000m mark. To make things even tougher, during the race there is over 4,000m of climbing to tackle and some of the most physical stages we have seen in the EWS, which would be a challenge at sea level. Here in the thin air of the Colorado Rockies it is going to test the limits of riders right the way through the field.

Here is Crested Butte is the original site of the mountain bike hall of fame and the mountain bike history museum paying homage to the hard men who towards the end of the 1970s rode terrifying dangerous bikes into the mountains in the name of fun.

Johnny Wenner is racing this weekend on his homebrew steel Wenn 01 full-susser. He fabricated the bike himself and reckons that with the high pivot and idler pulley this 38lb machine will climb like a far lighter bike.

Always a tactician Nico is also utilizing a brush guard for his shifter brake--the recent rains in Crested Butte have the trails virtually overgrown with wild flowers and grass. These simple guards allow Nico one less worry as he pins it through the alpine here in Colorado.

Nico Vouilloz appears to be rocking something a bit custom for this race. E i Monarch plus with some one off linkage bits that appear to be fresh off the CNC machine. Evidently the linkage mimics the leverage curve of the 2016 Spicy. Nico s also rocking a 2016 Lyric dropped down to 160mm of travel.

The stages at the Crested Butte EWS race are all out there away from town and not easily accessible neccessitating a lot of shuttle vehicles. While the organizers provided shuttles many teams decided to run their own.

Rider safety is always a concern and luckily today there were no injuries. Brenda was stationed at the bottom of stage 4 with her puppy all day and luckily her day was uneventful.

Todays practice was for stages 3 and 4 and the only way to the top was to ride up. Stage 3 was way up there so most riders decided just to hike up stage 4.

Not too far from home but a well out of his elevation comfort zone Nick Hardin from Hood River OR cruising stage 4. Hardin lives at 160 feet above sea level. This section of trail is at well over 10 000 feet. That translates to about 70 of the O2 Hardin s used to. Ouch.

Practice today consisted of riding or pushing up stage 4 and getting the f--k out of the way for riders who were already on track. Gettint to the start of stage 4 was so much more ardous than pushing up that nearly every rider practicing this stage opted to go bottom up vs riding stage 3 and then death marching to the top of stage 4. No that pleasure is reserved for Day 2 of racing.... So instead riders took the short cut pushing and riding for well over an hour from the bottom up.

Evidence of how much the elevation has changed the game here. Trails that are in no way too steep to ride up being hiked up. The air is just too bloody thin for anyone not acclimated to the elevation to ride. So racers who played the show up the day before the event and just suffer did exactly that. Push their bike and suffer.

The man to beat this weekend. Without a doubt one of the fittest men in all of mountain biking and more than comfortable with the fast open tracks here in Colorado you d be hard pressed to find anyone betting against him this weekend.

 The riders will greatly benefit from practice on waterfall trail and 403. The sufferfest climb at the start of day two can be imagined as slow motion video of beautiful wildflowers, cold, clear creeks and soaring mountains set to the 2 hour soundtrack of your heart clawing its way up your spine and trying to climb out the top of your head. Occasional torrents of sweat spill into your eyes and you hallucinate that your are at the seaside for a second. What gear am I in? It doesn't seem to matter. Your feet look big and their weight seems to quadruple. The gape of your jaw increases with the altitude and your wheezing throat and cracking lips require constant water in the dry air. You aren't sure if your are smiling or sobbing. You talk to imaginary friends along the way. Totally worth the journey! But it's what most would call an honest climb.

 Brutal amount of climbing. I live near sea level and I give myself a gold star for hitting the 3000 ft mark. They are doing 5600 the first day, and then pushing their ass off downhill. The best will be those who can stay composed throughout the weekend.

 No kidding. 13 mile transfer between 1 and 2? I hurt thinking about that.

 It's enduro, not DH or motocross. 5600 isn't a small ride, but far from inconceivable, especially for anyone expert or above.

 At sea level or close to it I would agree, but at 10,000-12,000' it is a completely different story. This race is almost completely about fitness and ability to adapt to altitude. It was hard enough that several pros opted to race some stages blind rather than expend the energy to get to all of them. The amateur ranks are going to get decimated with people abandoning.

 Just got done with day 1. In my group, the first wave of pros, there was a huge amount of flats, crashes, and mechanicals on stage 1. The transfer to 2 was one of the hardest things I've done in recent memory. Now, where's my beer?

 hell yeah Noah, nice work. I thought about doing that very climb up rosebud with some buddies a couple weeks ago to access roaring judy. Was it rideable or lots of hiking? Is it worse than climbing deadman switchbacks (like we did in the ultra)?

 It was brutal. The first few miles weren't extremely steep, but sure felt tough after sprinting for 17 minutes on stage 1 and then climbing up a dirt road several miles. Eventually it got too steep to ride and we pushed for probably an hour. I won't be doing that again, even though Roaring Judy was white knuckle fun!

 The trails here are often heavily over grown. The trail side fauna will whip the crap out of your hands. It also welcomes your 800mm bars by yanking you off trail and deep into the brush. Let's not forget Colorado is high desert so there's lots of prickly stuff Everywhere as well. Welcome to Colorado. Please keep single track Single.

 Dr's Park is a sweet DH. Glad to see it's opened back up. Well, all those trails are sweet.

 The perks of living in Colorado... no need to worry about breathing! Bash guards seem a bit foolish, the over growth on the sides of trails will literally pull you in. Practice without gloves and you will learn very quickly to stay centered on the trails.

 Oxygen levels at this altitude separates this race from all of the others in the EWS.

At 9,000 feet, which is where they are sleeping you are 73% of sea level oxygen. At 12,000 feet, which is close to the summit for these riders, you are at 65%. So yeah, they have some long days ahead of them.

 For those of us in the US, make sure you select "ft" instead of "m". Makes a difference, lol.

 Dumb question maybe, but why switch to 180 rotors from 203, when speeds are expected to be high? Cant be the weight penalty...

 I was wondering the same thing. I've also wondered why rear rotors are smaller when that's the brake I use most when going downhill at high speeds.

 Trails are flowing without a lot of heavy braking areas close together so no need for big rotors.
