GoPro Launches the Hero 11 Black & Mini

Sep 16, 2022
by Ed Spratt

GoPro has launched the eleventh iteration of its Hero action camera and a new smaller Mini offering.

This week GoPro launched its new action cameras with the Hero 11 Black and the Mini. Both cameras have very similar feature sets and the specs for the new models include:

- New HyperView digital lens for widest angle 16:9 shot ever produced in a Hero GoPro camera. SuperView is now available in 5.3K60 and 4K120.
- HyperSmooth 5.0 technology with in-camera 360-degree Horizon Lock.
- Three new Night Effect Time Lapse presets for capturing Star Trails, Light Painting and Vehicle Light Trails.
- TimeWarp 3.0 now captures at 5.3K.
- Simpler camera control with Easy and Pro modes.
- Enduro Battery to improve camera performance in cold and moderate temperatures. Comes with Hero11 Black and as a built-in battery in Hero 11 Black Mini.

The biggest talking point about the new release is definitely the Mini which does seem to be built with similar aims to the Session camera. With the Mini, you get most of the Hero 11 Black's features but in a package that is 20 grams lighter and 13% smaller. With the reduction in size you do lose the touchscreen with the camera being controlled through the brands Quik app. To help keep track of settings there is still a small screen showing battery life, resolution, frame rate and how much recording time is left.

Once again signing up to GoPro's yearly subscription service does offer a discount with the Hero 11 Black costing $400 for subscribers or $500 for everyone else and is available now. Things are slightly trickier for the Mini with the camera selling at $300 for subscribers or $400 if not. Where things get a little confusing is the Mini launches exclusively for subscribers on October 25 but there is no release just yet for those not signed up.

More info, here.

Subscription services are the devil’s work.
  • 13 12
have to say, that it was a good idea to subscribe. i got a huge cloud to save my videos, got big disscounts on mounts and other gopro stuff. also you can get 2 gopros swapped for new one in year if you brake one. even works for older ones, had a screen broken on my gopro 8, send it in and payd only 80£ for getting it replaced for a new one!
  • 11 8
I gotta admit that GoPro's subscription is pretty rad, though. $5 a month and you get automatic cloud uploads and unlimited storage. The unlimited storage is the real value add here.
  • 41 3
I just delete the old videos, unlimited storage isn't an issue anymore. 99.999999% of the video is worthless anyway.

I like to save screen shots for memories. MAYBE short video clips of the best stuff, but that is very little (usually to upload to the socials, then delete).

I have yet to break a camera. I cracked a lens, but those are replaceable (which I haven't bothered doing yet).

I had the subscription for a little while, then realized it was a waste, like all the other subscriptions.

I love having decent videos of regular people riding different trails. It definitely helps me decide where/what I want to ride.

While the video quality improved, I never felt like all the money he spent on the newest cameras was worth it when his videos recorded with a Session was plenty enough.

Still have mine, plenty good enough for my riding..
  • 11 1
@bat-fastard: I've got a Session too and it well and truly sucks compared to the GoPro 8 I upgraded to earlier this year. Image quality, color, shooting modes, resolution, audio (if you care about that), a screen so you can see what you're doing and most of all hypersmooth are absolutely worth upgrading for, unstabilised GoPro footage is 60% unusable garbage in my experience.
The one thing I miss about my old Session is the tiny form factor but the 8 is at least lighter and smaller than 9 and 10 without really lacking any of their features that I would care about. It's also cheaper.

Anyway, the 11 mini comes pretty close to the form factor of the old Session so that should be a worthy upgrade for most who are asking for a new Session.
  • 6 0
@rarerider: like I said for riding I do it's fine. Headcam under visor and is plenty good quality to upload to FB YouTube etc as they kill quality anyways. As for a screen totally don't need for a headcam just check it on phone and good to go.
  • 2 0
I was given two 7 Blacks, but the Session is what I use for virtually all my recording. I just want a few memories though, not trying to get the whole worlds attention on YT.
  • 1 0
I still have and use the last version of the little Session (5?) cube. Mainly underneath my 4-wheeler in a waterproof magnetic mount. I will probably get one of these minis when the time comes. I like em small for under the helmet visor or on a chesty for race runs. Otherwise, I don't record much.
  • 1 1
I agree with @rarerider I have a Session, 5 Black, and 7 Black, and the 5 is way better than the Session, and the 7 is way better than the 5.

I’ve been meaning to buy a new one but I’m just going to wait for either the 10 or 11 to go on sale at Costco probably…
  • 2 0
@rarerider: Exactly!! I have a session but never use it as I would need a gimbal and everything...f*ck it! The 9 and 10 seems to have a looott of problems but the hypersmooth is insane!! The 11 mini seems really nice but we would have to know if it overheats, can film when cold, etc....all the big problems that 9 and 10 are known for. I doubt they resolve that. Even the enduro batteries were not really good as people were saying on gopro site.
  • 17 1
Cheapskate tip: Any of the gopros with image stabilization are pretty great, from 7 on. And I kinda think the "less good" stabilization of the older ones is better for mtb because it leaves in enough movement to make it feel more real. That Mini looks cool, though.
  • 3 0
Definitely agree all the stabilization from the 7 up is pretty solid. But there’s a big difference between camera shake and camera movement. On chunky trails in low light it can still be pretty shaky, but hey not everything is perfect. The best improvement in the most recent versions that this 11 improves on further is horizon leveling (and now horizon lock). Makes riding footage so much more enjoyable to watch and get the true pov experience.
  • 2 0
People are still asking $300+ for the 7 here. I've been thinking about starting a skiing channel but it's hard to justify the cost
  • 2 0
More real? Everytime I tried to record something, was so excited to watch it after my ride just to be so mad because it was unwatchable! On your helmet it's good but on the chest mount so you can see the handlebar and seems to be faster, you need a gimbal or hypersmooth from newer gopro.

I've not seen a single solid youtube video comparing this, DJI's and Insta360's offerings to say "This is best for this.... this is best for this....."

I can't decide whether a Hero 11 (or mini), with or without the max lens mod is better than a DJI action 3 or an Insta360 RS (or X3) and whether or not a 360 camera is just generally a better option. Normal people can't try them all to make a decision, and 400 notes is a lot of cash to throw at something that you find out later doesn't work well for mtb'ing.
  • 16 2
GoPro's audio and video quality is just better than others, the others are still a solid choice though. GoPro just does it better.
  • 8 0
In normal lighting the Hero 11 has better dynamic range, stability, color, and 10 bit color depth which is great for color grading or correction. I've been really pleased with my Hero 8's flat profile, can only imagine the 11's 10bit will be even better. The DJI will be better when light levels are lower. Potato Jet's YT vid highlighted all of this.
  • 7 0
The Loam Ranger did a comparison with the 360, 10 and 11 (and a little 8 ). Not sure whether he hit on the info you're after, but wouldn't hurt to take a peek.
  • 17 0
@noapathy: the loam ranger is definitely paid by insta 360 which seems to lead to some bias
  • 4 0
@brookscurran: I think so, yes. Good to be aware, so take the 360 praise with a grain of salt for sure. At least he did side-by-side shots so people can see them in action on an actual trail.
  • 2 0
I own a DJI Osmo 1 and is the best camera since my GoPro, very solid in every aspect, never crash the software, you don't need accounts to edit,. Even being theV1 s perfect for my rides and if you want to buy the V1 is the cheapest action cam with many features of the expensive ones.
  • 1 0
@noapathy: @brookscurran yeah I get the vibe that he is affiliated with insta 360 as well.

Either way, his side by sides are pretty informative and help illustrate the differences (some of which are quite minute).

I just need to know which one will make me ride like the pros I watch who use 'em
  • 2 0
IMO, they're all pretty much the same, until you try to film some Helmet or Chest POV. The Gopro's SuperView allows for the whole bar to be seen on the footage, with some pretty awesome results. I've tried a few of the other options, but not a single one quite delivered the same (comparing to the Gopro 8, and the cameras available at the time).
  • 2 0
Seems to me a 360 camera has a lot of advantages. Lots of stuff happens when your back is turn, or behind you while riding.
  • 11 0
 @noapathy: I own a Hero 10 and an Insta360 One X2.

The GoPro is always the one I’d choose first as my main camera…it’s easy to use, gives decent footage and importantly for me the footage is easy to transfer and edit on my PC.

The Insta360 OneX2 is a fantastic chest camera (the GoPro goes on my helmet) as the image stabilization is amazing but the quality isn’t quite there for both video or audio in my opinion.

That said, a combo of both cameras works really well, it’s always good to be able to break up the footage with different angles and if one gets mud on the lens/battery runs out/corrupted file (looking at you GoPro) at least you have another camera recording so you’ll more than likely still have the footage in one way or another. I tend to use the audio from the GoPro with a foam wind sock as I use a Smallrig cage on the Insta360 used horizontally (to make it more compact) and that makes fitting any wind reducers difficult.

One thing I do LOVE about the Insta360 OneX2 is that you can choose landscape or portrait exports of the same footage without compromising the crop, this means I can use the same footage for my YouTube video or vertically for Reels etc, that’s a really great feature.

I’ve been sent both the GoPro Hero 10 and the Insta360 OneX2 for free in the past but if it means anything I’m not running out to buy the new Hero11 (too similar to my Hero 10 to be worth it) but I have just bought the latest Insta360 X3
  • 1 0
@aliclarkson: "One thing I do LOVE about the Insta360 OneX2 is that you can choose landscape or portrait exports of the same footage without compromising the crop, this means I can use the same footage for my YouTube video or vertically for Reels etc, that’s a really great feature."

That is one of the new features of the 11, plus Horizon lock for full 360 degrees of rotation.
  • 1 0
@brookscurran: Is he? He uses the 360 exclusively for extremely steep sections of trail and GoPro for everything else. Pretty clear which he prefers for general use
  • 1 0
Sam Pilgrim showed some of the 11's features in his last video, and there is a lot of edge distortion. It made everyone look sort of skinny and distorted compared to the 10 he was comparing it to.
  • 2 0
@zephxiii: oh yeah? That’s pretty cool then!
  • 1 0
this came up in my youtube feed. Compares DJI and 11. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqDLMpeIyUo
  • 1 0
@aliclarkson: not in super view mode though - complete horizon lock is only available in linear and more narrow field of view modes. In super view i think it can crop in far enough to account for up to 30 degrees of roll, which is still decent.
  • 1 0
@PHeller: I guess I'm on of the few with a Max. Use it most of the time on a chest mount in hero mode, but can do 360 if I want. IMO, fantastic footage, and so far nothing out there makes me want to upgrade yet.
  • 2 0
@Chuckolicious: have a max too, it's so versatile I love it! Don't think I'll upgrade untill the Max 2 tbh.
  • 11 2
What was the cutoff for all the YouTubers getting a free GoPro... 100k subscribers? It was funny (and sad) to see all the "review" videos posted at the same time yesterday.
  • 7 0
So the only advantage to the mini is the rear mounting port cause its basically the same size. The old session was significantly smaller than the hero black of the time.
  • 1 0
The main thing for me is the weight. The Mini is only 20g lighter than a full-sized 11. It still weighs almost twice as much as a Session. It's definitely a step in the right direction, and I'm happy that they got rid of the screens at least. But it really needs a smaller battery too. An updated Session with a removable battery would be ideal. Just carry a spare in your pocket if needed.
  • 5 0
I dont know if others feel this way, but the GoPro video footage looks great when I play it directly on my PC, but as soon as I upload it to any sort of social media platform, the compression terrorizes the quality. So at this point, I dont really need a better GoPro, I need a better place to host videos that I do choose to share.

Edit: And yes, I have followed many guides and walkthru's on how to get the best possible quality, with no success. Heck even videos from people like Metallier end up looking bad.
  • 1 0
THIS !!! My old gopros were always too shaky but I was so happy when I strapped one on my chinguard and had, finally, a good result!! Then upload it on social media and it looks like crap, like it was filmed with a 2003 cell phones, wtff!!!

I got 7 when 8 was released and local retailers drop over 150 bucks off it. I won't need to upgrade this 7 black one until ver 13 or 14 for sure Big Grin

The only reason I got GoPro finally was when I saw my friend's GoPro 3 footage... it was old camera but the picture was freaking amazing. It's my to-go camera now, on vacations, bike trips and etc.
  • 1 0
@valrock: the only reason to upgrade is if they release one that can do HDR video. Ideally 4k 120fps HDR video
  • 3 0
GoPro's OS and reliability is atrocious. After all the camera series they've produced, you'd think they would have more quality control and beta testing procedures in place before they release a product.
  • 4 0
I can give it to my kid so he can film me and I can finally end up on Friday fails or Mediocre Mondays!
  • 2 1
 I gotta try that Mini.

I just warrantied my Hero 5 and got a 9. With a trail helmet on, it's like a brick on top of my skull. And no matter how tight I wear the chin strap and latch down the ratchet band inside the helmet....the weight of the 9, it's case and big battery want to pull me over.

I'm glad they're making the 11 Mini. Think I'll try to sell my 9 and get it just so I can film that one thing that one time without flipping over.

Amazes the hell out of my when I see World Cup Pro's leave their Hero 10's on top of their helmet (or worse under the visor pulling their helmet down and forward) for a winner take all race run. Weight has become a big issue.
  • 1 0
I agree it's fairly heavy. But I wouldn't use a case with the 9. Just mount it to the built in fingers on the bottom. The lens covers are replaceable for $20 if they get scratched so it's not a big deal
  • 1 0
@ejopdahl: Hero 9 without a case is almost twice the weight of the Hero 5 Black with a case.
  • 1 0
Still wonder why Red Bull never bought GoPro . Maybe it would be called RedPro or Go Bull or something like that, .Nevertheless the most versatile boomproof camera with perhaps the best Tool to record those moments . I always use 2 modes or 3...not more.
  • 2 1
RedPro sounds like it would be an adult entertainment site.
  • 2 1
11 versions and still the same form factor the fact the main GoPro is still the same size is embarrassing

The Insta360 go2 Who needs more than a five minute clip to edit and is smaller than a bic lighter

Did they fire all the hardware engineers at GoPro?
  • 1 0
GoPro needs to bring back support for Apple Watch. Mini sounds cool but having to carry a phone to control the camera would be a nonstarter for me. I stopped using my GoPro when they pulled the Watch app years ago. Which sucked because I primarily got the Apple Watch so I didn't have to carry my phone when riding.
  • 1 0
I just went through the damage replacement via the subscription and they make it as hard as possible for you to get it replaced, then tack on the tax of the full price replacement. So to replace my Hero 9 it was $99 plus $42 in taxes. Crooked company.
  • 3 0
Gopro and youtube need to have a chat because I can't stand when my footage looks like it was recorded on a potato due to compression.
  • 2 0
Yep. Hopefully in time they'll raise the bitrates. 4k is a must as 1080 bitrate is so low, total garbage.
  • 1 0
@zephxiii: maybe just upload 4k footage as 8k?
  • 1 0
@wburnes: Could upscale to 8k but the lower resolutions still get capped and that's what most are viewing. Would still be interesting to investigate.
  • 1 0
Lots of complaining, but it's truly incredible what a GoPro can do these days. For $400, you get ease of use, durability, smooth shots. What else could you want? Camera technology has come so far, and we're so lucky to have cameras that can do so much for so little.
  • 4 0
Apparently it still has overheating issues.
  • 1 0
Looks like it was improved a lil. I saw a video where using a metal cage or external power then recording time increases. If you combine them both then you may get near unlimited record time or it is very significantly improved. I use both on my 8 Hero Black which may explain why I don't typically have any issue.
  • 2 0
Non removable battery in the mini was an insta-no bueno for me. Wont be upgrading from the 10, although the DJI Action 3 looks great.
  • 1 0

On the 11, is the Quik app allowing preview when shooting, with the camera eye view? With the 10, preview cuts out when you hit record using the Quik app. Very annoying.

I've seen a few youtube bike channels testing the 11, i don't know if youtube mess it up but the image quality is crap as usual. Apart from the stabilisation, it's not better then 10 years ago.
