Good Month / Bad Month: Home Bike Maintenance, Training Indoors, Videos, & Everything Else - March 2020

Home Bike / Workshop Maintainence

With quarantines and lockdowns in place, people are working on their home mechanic spaces and skills.

I wrote a poll a couple months back asking "How Mechanically Minded are You?" Not surprisingly, most responses fell into the category of "Home Mechanic" - being able to build up a bike correctly if the appropriate tools are available. Surprisingly, nearly four thousand people rated themselves as a mechanical "Wizard." I'd wager my toilet paper stockpile on the fact that most of those "Wizards" would have trouble bleeding a set of brakes or rebuilding a fork, but that's a different topic.

With many people also working from home, the welcome distraction of YouTube tutorials and the ability to mail-order whatever supplies are needed for a tune-up has caused plenty of people, myself included, to overhaul things on their bikes they didn't know needed it. Additionally, what better time to renovate your workspace at home, install some new bike hooks, and perfectly arrange all of your tools?

What else is there to do besides organize everything that is typically laying in a pile?

Training Indoors

Staying strong to come back in better shape than ever.

Athletes aren't the only ones on the trainer right now. With many riders currently restricted to training at home, it's been a time to step back and focus on strengthening weaknesses and making the best of things with what you have. Zwift has group rides with thousands of people going and Trainer Road even has a new feature where riders can video chat with their friends to watch each other suffer, live and on screen.

Take the trainer out of the equation and there are endless amounts of bodyweight fitness routines along with the tutorials of how to do them pouring out online. Then, there's always the good 'ol fashioned push-up.

Kate Courtney hasn't let things slow her down too much, she's just adapted to the current situation.

Videos

Shreddits, workouts, throwbacks, and features...they're all here.

There has never been a better time to sit down and watch mountain bike or any other sort of video than the present. There have been a plethora of videos ranging from the random shreddit, to fitness tutorials, to full length feature films and throwbacks to videos you may have never even seen from the good 'ol days posted online recently, free of charge.

Personal recommendations? For racing, Earthed 3, then there's always The Collective, and Stripped...both classics. This paragraph took two hours just because I got sucked into the nostalgia on YouTube and watched all of those videos in their entirety while adding the links in.
Seasons North Shore
It's a perfect time to relive the glory days and focusing on getting fit for the future.

The World as We Knew It

CO-VID19 Pandemic Takes its Toll

Life as we know it has drastically changed in the last month. While there are many glimmers of hope, the fact is that a lot of people are in a really bad place right now, and what the future looks like is quite uncertain. While bikes can provide an outlet and keep us sane, staying safe and keeping others safe is more important than going on a mega group ride right or hitting that massive drop you've been eying up for the last few years.

As far as bikes go, races and events have been canceled for the foreseeable future and many trail systems have been closed. While it seems difficult to do so, it's now critical for everyone to stay nearby their home, wherever it may be, and sit tight, work on their bikes, do some push-ups, practice social-distancing, wash your hands, and look forward to when it's safe to commune and visit other destinations again.
photo

During this time, it's critical for us all to think about others than ourselves. Check-in on neighbors and friends with a phone call, don't horde things you don't need and be nice to one another...even in the comments on the internet. Get out as much as you're safely and legally able to, encourage your homies, and remember that things will get better.

I hope they got one of the last Trust fork for the Donut to test
  • 3 2
@usmbc-co-uk: nah covid-20 is right around the corner bud. It’s here to stay.
  • 1 1
Because even if coronavirus is still causing us all to be inside at least we'll know how bikes from 2030 might work

Its been a month where importance and relativity has been restored. Educators, health, science and critical services have been restored to their correct position in society. Rampant consumerism, short termism and fluff in destroying the world is being displayed. Commercial Strategy is seen for what it is.
  • 33 4
I don't know what it's like over on your island, but I can tell you education, health, science and critical services are by no means restored to their "correct position in society" in the US. I would also go as far as to guess that my neighbors to the north would likely agree.
  • 28 16
@gossman: I understand in the US its a problem. But it too will come. Big changes coming. Your model is broke. The exodus and economic refugee outpouring from your Nation will be great.

Stop printing new bits of paper to replace the old pieces of paper that you have sent offshore. Stop printing new certificates to then be bought by the same entity to shore up the old certificates.
  • 17 4
@gossman: As someone who works in education I fully agree with @gonzoracing

Billions and Billions (RIP Carl) are flooding into the K-12 system to support distance learning and the amazing and dedicated teachers who support our students. Medical staff are highly valued and being called back to duty. The entire financial system is configured to enrichen the tip of the iceberg while the rest of us are distracted by the fight over scaps of 'stimulus' .
  • 7 1
@endlessblockades: as an educator myself I completely agree with you.
  • 8 1
@gonzoracing: i completely agree with your point about the US printing money. We (the US) have benefitted greatly from our currency’s reserve status and that may come to an end soon. Problem is other countries are also printing money. This whole fiat monetary system benefits the banks, governments and the politically connected. It harms those not politically connected and especially the poor, middle class and fixed income retirees. Please do not confuse this dishonest monetary system with free markets or capitalism. It is neither.

I will say, however, that it's cool to see coyotes on the streets of San Francisco.

 @westeast: Spot on, cheers.
  • 5 0
@gonzoracing: Cheers. So nice to be in agreement with someone ha ha.
  • 4 0
@gonzoracing: genuinely agree with this. Even tho coronavirus is causing a bit of a shambles I think it will shift peoples focus to things that are important and really matter in life.
  • 6 1
As Adam Curtis has put it: the most radical thing an individual can do these days is to arrange a year long walking expedition from Europe to China, come back and don’t tell anyone about it. It becoming a trend would be the end of social media/ cyberspace economy as we know it

 @gossman:
As a recent immigrant with by no means all the facts, Canada seems to be doing a much better job of looking after its people and health, education, science and critical services are being extremely well respected right now (in BC at least). I'm pretty proud to be in a country that, from where I'm sitting, appears to be doing the right thing.

My condolences to you folks south of the border. Trump has a lot of blood on his hands.
  • 2 1
 @notthatfast: Trump?.. ) pff....

The nation deserves its leaders!
  • 5 0
@notthatfast: We love you too recent immigrant!
  • 1 0
@gonzoracing: I think I interpreted your words wrong. By position in society, you mean the focal point of what is important not necessarily the leading forces in the public mind... Am I more onto it now? We do need to stop printing our garbage $$. I agree with that 100% (googles and helmet).

@jasminov: Americans always do the right thing, after they have expended all other options.

In the nearly three weeks I’ve been at home I’ve learned to do a lower leg service, bleed a brake set and make homemade tire sealant. By my rough calculations in three more weeks I’ll be welding my own frames.
  • 4 0
If you need any welding tips let me know. I would like to see some one use the fish mouth technique to weld a frame or braze I think it would be gorgeous raw
  • 2 0
I busted open my DVO rear. And put it back together with fresh oil and grease. The basement ride says its good to go!
  • 11 0
No further info on that tire sealant, please!

Bad Month: Having a nasty yellow tab in the corner of your screen telling you that you need to take 82 polls on pinkbike.
  • 38 1
 This ↑.

I personally, will not be playing that game.

A chance for mirth though, I will not pass up.

Oh to have been a fly on the virtual video conferencing wall when that little agenda item came up..

Park: "So, what have we got left in the tank people? Come on, ideas people... don't be shy!!"
Kazimer: "There's the Grim Donut test"
Levy: "We're not done yet, I've only had 300 hours on it"
Park: "Well, throw them a bone at least Levy, knock up something to keep them interested. And for my sanity's sake, get more bottle bosses in it somewhere at least... I don't need to spend any more of my time sifting through acerbic comments from the mob."
Levy:"But..."
Park: "Levy! Don't interrupt! What have I told you..."
Levy: "Sorry Brian."
Park: "Brie, what you got?"
Brie "Ummmm.....well... we have that story about how $820 billion will be lost globally in the MTB tourism sector, and how cash flow problems in..."
Park: "We need them to STAY on the site Brie, not fall asleep at it... Jeez. Mitch?"
Mitch: "There's that story I've been working on about how all trail dogs resemble their owner's moustaches..."
Park: "(sigh)... Mitch, how many times Mitch... NO!"
Mitch: "Yes boss."
Aidan "Umm....I have an idea..."
Park: "Sorry AIdan, did you squeak?"
Aidan "Well, it's just that I....thought, you know, we might be able to get them to, you know, stay on the site by giving them some more polls to do.."
Park: ".....that, Aidan... is....brilliant!!! Did you hear that the rest of you? Here's someone who knows what this site is here for in reality. Aidan, you are a genius. Right, let's go the whole hog, I want you to throw every goddam poll we have ever run in the past five years at 'em. Big yellow tab screaming at them on the header bar. I want everyone on it, every user to do every poll"
Aidan: "What do you mean, everyone?"
Park: " www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRIr9MNmCwU "

 @orientdave: bravo sir
  • 7 1
@orientdave dear pink bike. Please do this in video format.

Yours truly

Everyone.
  • 4 0
@orientdave: I clicked the green arrow 50 times but it said I could only do it once, sorry.
  • 2 0
@49thbiker: video of the day for reals
  • 7 1
maybe we should all agree to select the top most choice of every poll. that way, the annoying yellow reminder goes away and pinkbike doesnt get the free data they want. things like this should be consent. no assumed that everyone will do it.
  • 3 0
Thanks for all the free content PB, but pushing people into this will likely backfire on you. I've just clicked on the 1st option of every poll. Means nothing, but it's gotten rid of that fucking yellow box.
  • 6 0
I've just had my account suspended for spamming, because I posted a comment on one of the polls, then copied and pasted it on others. Thankfully, creating a new email address is child's play.
In the meantime PB allows comments like the one below without any penalty.

"And it's some fit of delusion for some reason every orthopedic surgeon I work with had to cancel surgeries despite the fact there are five patients with this supposed flu in the entire County. We are now firing , staff sending employees home and putting them all on unemployment. Genius. I really hope a ton of people die from this to Simply make it worth it that would absolutely make the Democrats and socialists happy."

Well done PB, you should be proud.
  • 2 0
@orientdave: COVID-19 and Screaming yellow polls tab. 2 things we'll now have to get used to living with.
  • 3 0
Fuck you guys, I successfully had ignored it and now it screams into my face.
  • 3 0
@metaam: this exactly. By coercing people to participate in them, you'll have a bunch of people doing just what you did, and then it devalues their precious market analysis data.
  • 3 0
 I think it's gone guys
  • 1 0
@commental: Please Please Please for the love of all things post the screen name of the idiot that spewed that garbage. That way, If ever in the future I see some other debatable point (that will almost certainly end in me self face slapping and walking away) from this Toolbag I can just post that quote as my counter argument.
  • 27 1
THE NEW EFFING POLLS NAV UP TOP IS A HUGE DOWN
  • 6 1
came here to say the same.
  • 2 2
PB is free, and they do put a lot of work and effort into what turns out to be such a great website. I think the least I can do is simply answer a few polls for them.
  • 3 0
@JacobyDH: I know and I appreciate it. It must be the whole social distance / stay inside all the time thing, Im a lot more fussy lately and nit pick everything.
  • 2 0
@zombiejack33: yeah, I completely understand. I guess I have that too, because today I posted my first comment that got taken down because of downvotes. Sorry!
  • 2 0
@JacobyDH: We gotta stay positive!! Smile
  • 1 0
@zombiejack33: you could use at as an excuse to get those polls done though =)
  • 1 0
 @JacobyDH: true that!
  • 1 0
@zombiejack33: yeah, I think these are hard times for everybody. All the death and destruction this has brought us already, and it hasn’t even peaked in the U.S.! Stressful times!
  • 1 0
@JacobyDH: Ya be safe down there, looks crazy
  • 1 0
@zombiejack33: yeah, it is! Sad times. #solidarity@8. Mill Valley has a “wolf howl” that they do every night at 8pm. I can send you a video if you want, it really shows a sense of community!
  • 1 0
@JacobyDH: Sure, that sounds interesting. We have something similar but at 7
  • 1 0
Nice of them to allow comments on the polls so we can voice our opinion though.

It’s been a good month for those who are really bad at fantasy DH, and EN (me)
  • 4 0
But this was the year I was going to turn it around on fantasy.
  • 1 0
@manuni88: yeah, I thought I would too, and I bet you would’ve, but I think I’m staying at the bottom 0.01% for at least a couple more years!
  • 10 1
Every month your elderly family members are still alive for...could be considered a good month, if you like your family...
  • 3 0
I told my grandma that I would be avoiding her until all this calms down, a couple of weeks before they started telling people to stay home. Might be a while. But at least we text! I live on the same property, plan on staying here as long as she is around in case she needs anything.
  • 2 0
@JSTootell: that’s very nice of you!
  • 9 1
Its been a great month (week and a half) for my liver.

Really a shame to see how people are wasting it on productive things and positivity
  • 8 1
I keep thinking about our LBSs and praying they survive this. Would take my bike in for an unneeded tune up but they aren’t even open for that.
  • 3 4
The shop near me has a tent setup outside with a spray bottle to disinfect contact points. A lineup of people waiting patiently to drop off their bikes for servicing. They even have a box of rubber gloves for clients to wear before they go into the store.

Downside I witnessed when I went inside for supplies - a Father/son combo (foreign - the father spoke poor English, son was translating) the fork on the son's bike wasn't working properly. The father wanted to either buy a new fork or an entire new bike right away because......the son had some sort of a bike camp in town the next day and had to ride.

Shame on any of the guides / coaches that are doing this type of thing during this global problem.
  • 7 1
It's been a week of lockdown here, we are allowed out for exercise, maintaining social distancing. There are more bikes than cars going past my house, lots of people rediscovering the joy of cycling. Maybe that will do a little, going forward, to offset the losses for LBS
  • 1 0
All the LBS's I know of are open in my area, considered essential just like car repair shops. And seem to be busy.
  • 8 1
 MUST COMPLETE POLLS.
  • 4 1
Iv been in lock down fo a few weeks now and so far I've had a wheel build and a carbon enduro frame with bearings where just the outer race is stick in the frame

Overall this year has been a 5 alarm dumpster fire.
  • 5 2
Overall the passed 3 and a half years has been a 5 alarm dumpster fire. Fixed it for ya. Stay healthy!
  • 1 0
This is a legit question... not breaking balls. Is the term "5 alarm dumpster fire" an oxymoron? Does it mean "a really small fire that way too many firefighters showed up to"? Or does is mean "really big fire"?

I really want to know cause it just might be my new catch phrase.
  • 3 0
For next months BAD you should have the yellow polls tab that was added at the top of the website. At the very least can you un-highlight it please.
  • 1 0
Its been a good month for: global reduction in pollution, no road noise, less cars, natures had a holiday. Less rushing around, more chill time, more time to work out, more time to pedal, just more time, , ,simple pleasure, not spending money (no where to spend it), clearing the overdraft. Bad month: for death, people losing jobs and businesses. But I really don't want to go back to the world i left, over busy, stuck in a miserable commute each day, focusing on loads of stuff that doesn't matter much and tires you out. I might have to sell up and move somewhere more chill after this.
  • 3 0
Look, if it wasn't for Covid 19 I would never even heard of DICK POUND. Its a win.
