Opinion: Further Faster - Thoughts on the Coming E-Ride Revolution

May 16, 2014
by Bjorn Enga
E ride revolution

Years ago, I participated in introducing the world to freeride mountain biking through the release of the movie “Kranked-Live to Ride.” At the time we were pushing the limits of how a mountain bike could be ridden and having a lot of fun. We were stoked and wanted to share this experience. Our motives were pure. Lots of people got it right away and were inspired. But most, particularly bike industry people, let us know that we were doing wrong, that trails would be closed, that this was not mountain biking…

E ride revolution
Screen grab of Wade Simmons from Kranked-Live to Ride, Utah, 1997

Now, I hear the same sentiments about e-bikes. Like freeriding, 29 inch wheels, carbon frames, 1by11 drivetrains, electric assist bikes are a paradigm shift. Electric assist is different and unknown. So I understand why on the surface it is easy to have a negative reaction, I mean come on, a bike with a motor is a motor bike right? Motorbikes chew up trails, are loud and generally are not welcomed by mountain bikers.

The Future is Now - Kranked

Motor bike and mountain bike
Moto vs ebike – one is built around the motor the other around the bike.

News flash: electric assist mountain bikes are not motorbikes. I consider my electric assist bikes extreme performance mountain bikes. They allow me to ride further and faster than before. I can ride to the top of the mountain from my house at a level I have dreamed about for years. I’m like a pro XC racer times 2. I am riding 100km+ a week off road these days. This technology allows me to ride with state of the art DH suspension everywhere. So I am getting DH suspension performance at pro XC ride speeds. I am moving out on the trails, shredding from start to finish, in a manner that is sustainable day in, day out. I’m riding like a super hero, or at least I think I am!

E ride revolution
39km backcountry route, 2 hours and 39 minutes ride time.

E-bikes are an amazing fusion of advanced technologies. Today’s mountain bikes are incredible. The emerging electric assist technology allows today’s mountain bike to perform at its peak up, across and down. This is what this fusion achieves. The paradigm shift is huge, the performance gain massive. The mindset to understand this performance gain is just as great, until you experience it.

As mountain bikers we need to stick together and embrace change in a positive way. Freeriding inspired the youth of the world to mountain bike. The predicted apocalypse did not materialize. The naysayers eventually started publishing freeride cover shots on their magazines and investing in free ride factory teams. We got to know Brett Tippie, Wade Simmons and Richie Schley!

Riding a bike is a really positive experience. So is riding an ebike. There are way more positives than negatives so why not focus on those and not get hung up on possible negatives and fear of change. The world needs green transportation in an indisputable way. Biking and E-biking are a viable solution.

E ride revolution

And what if your friend wants to ride an e-bike? Go for the ride! That’s the most important part. Try the thing, form an opinion based on knowledge, not speculation. I have a firm conviction that this technology is going to revolutionize the sport again! It’s just that rad. I’ve witnessed rad, and this is it. Ride responsibly and with respect and most of all enjoy your friends, no matter what they choose to ride.

I'm still not sure what to think about these though. If I was the guy on the XC bike who had worked for hours to get to the top and have some peace and solitude, I would not appreciate someone flying up behind me on their DH rig having put hardly any effort into their ascent. If mountain biking is about shredding it up for you, E-bikes are great. For me, mountain biking is also about the physical and mental challenge, and I'll keep on riding under my own power.

Motor on a bike is a motor bike. It doesn't matter if it's powered by nuclear fusion or electricity. Mountainbiking and motor biking present two different thrills, and do not coexist on the same trails because of the weight difference, direction of travel, and skills needed to properly ride these trails. Okay they're great for commuting, or ripping up logging roads but why try to entice people with dh mountain bikes. Now they'll be ripping up rock gardens/trails faster than the people riding down them and I'd say it's gunna be a bad idea.
  • 41 5
With that being said, dirt bikes are freaking sweet and so are dh bikes. Why not save up and have two mean machines instead of one that you can't really ride on a mx track or trails properly?

Who cares? If people are out riding there bike they can do it however the hell they want to. I want to earn my way to the top but that doesnt mean they have to? Isnt it a form of shuttling basically but you ride a trail rather than on the road? Bikes are bikes just go out and have fun, im not going to tell you how you should be riding and neither should anyone else!

You guys are fags or way to old if you dont think that this is one of the best things to ever happen to mountain biking. Using a DH bike on Super D style trails, or just commuting is awesome. If you dont like it, shut up and go ride your road bike to the gay bar and bitch about pollution you sierra club tree huggin gay boys.

SMH, E- bikes have their place. Sadly they are wrongly being marketed for use on same mt.biking trails. They are motorized and are considered illegal for use on these non-motorized trails! You will be ticketed!

I think everyone is getting a little confused about the e bike thing. The bikes we're talking about are pedal assisted no? So you can't 'roost' and fang it up a fire road all sideways and shit. It just makes it easier to pedal. The thing that everyone seems to be getting confused and freaking out about is that new KTM full electric moto - which looks amazing - check out the video of Renner sending it in Europe.
Here's the thing. I like going down hills on my mountain bike as fast as I can. I'm not a downhiller though. I suffer riding up hills to have lots of fun on the way down. I ride the bus when it's going and ride up the hills when it's not. That just seems logical doesn't it? If there's an easy way to the top why the f**k not use it? Then I get more fun for my day - pretty simple stuff.
On the other hand, I make sacrifices with my bike so it will still go up a hill - 160mm of suspension etc. So if I could make my bike more fun to go down with (like more travel) yet still get up the hills and along the dumb flat bits why wouldn't I?
We can all get on our fitness high horse and go on about how rewarding climbing a f*cking stupid hill is but I have a certain amount of time in my day and if I had to choose between spending it grinding up a hill, (not fun) or riding down as fast as I can, (definitely fun) I know what I'd choose...

ughh i'm so sick of people comparing bikes to moto's saying they can get a top of the line DH bike for 10k or the latest yz250 for 8k or whatever. But that 8k moto isn't top of the line. The bikes that the likes of Villopoto or Stewart are riding are 150k+.

 This is an electric motorbike:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-AzDZt1IcM
And yeah it too looks like alot of fun.

I don't mind the uphills and the flats but its the downhills I live for! Which is why I live in the alps in a chairlift area so I can get as many runs as possible. E-bikes make getting more runs possible especially in the offseason or in non chairlift areas. Still I'll only get one when they area cheaper and lighter!

Its the lazy mans bike or the easy ride bike. It has a use just not in competition. let me explain. It could be a good tool for getting unfit people into the sport though or kids or even just people who want to enjoy the ride and scenery without the extreme fitness that is usually required, letting them really enjoy the ride more rather than struggling the whole time, they can ride longer as well. For anyone unfit they don't like the struggle its only after you ride you start to like the struggle of fitness in a weird way. Even for fit people sometimes they just want to relax and chill out with the family. I can see it having its place in domestic use, family, kids, newbies, less serious individuals, definitely. At the competition end of the sport it has no place. m2c

stereotype stupidity is not part of freeride mountainbiking. and thats just what riding a Kranked bike is. having fun, shreding hardcore WHEREVER, feeling powers of nature-body-and machine (no matter if board, ski, bike, motor).

guess mountainbiking is now too mainstream to have free thinking. or is it called enduro now? ;-)

I simply enjoy the purely mechanical solution that mountain bikes present. Electronics and all of the other fancy gadgets are cool and have their place, but ultimately I just want a way the escape....and that means ditching all of those electronics so it's just me, a bike, and a trail.
  • 6 0
On one hand, I also hate climbing 15 minutes uphill so that I can ride 5 minutes downhill. So from this point of view it's a logical solution.
On the other hand, for lazy people like me there are bikeparks with chairlifts (in most countries, in Ireland there aren't any).

Personally, screw the challenge, but there are four reasons why I wouldn't buy an e-bike yet:
1. They're expensive
2. They're heavy
3. They look ugly
4. If the engine breaks down, I can't fix it myself.
  • 12 4
First the pussification of trails.........next, the pussification of riders. When I started riding in 1985, we had no suspension and no MTB specific trails. You needed to be a pretty hardy individual. Nowadays, everyone is doing it.

@Fjmedia I apologize for coming off like an ass but I just can't stand reading all of these purists talk about how this would ruin our sport when this could open up so many doors. Yesterday when I was on here I was a little off my rocker to say the least. But my honest opinion is that I would love to spend more time shredding down hills on MY DOWNHILL BIKE then pushing MY DOWNHILL BIKE up hills. I have a xc bike to go and pedal around for a change. I would definitely want to keep my current DH bike as it is right now. But having a second DH bike with electric assist would be a blast. I could save so much time and spend more time having fun and venturing farther and farther. I have no respect for the hikers or horse riders who pile up boulders all over my local DH trails so anytime I can get a chance to shit on their day, I will drop my pants and do so.

  • 2 2
I agree with the electric assist part. But the video didn't look like an electric assist bike. There was very little pedaling going on. Looked more like an electric bike that didn't need much pedaling to make it go..
  • 2 2
E-Bikes are probably not the best for the average mountain biker for the reasons stated before; risk of trail damage, uphill fitness/satisfaction etc... However, what people have not taken into considerationa re people who might not actually be able to ride a normal bike. People who have knee injuries that stop them from being able to pedal at full tilt up a hill but still want to be able to go for a ride with their mates. People with heart conditions limiting their ability to push hard but who still know how to shred a rock garden, but physically will never be able to handle the steep climb back to the top.

E-MTB might not be for everyone, but for some people it might just be the way for them to get into the sport. And more people on bikes, no matter what type, has got to be good for the sport right? The sorts of people likely to buy these bikes aren't out to steal your KOM or get an unfair advantage at the next XC race, they are people who want to get that same thrill that we all love but otherwise are unable to. That's who this is for

E-Mountainbikes will change the people's attitude towards mountainbikers and - just as bad - on the long run probably change the way we see our sport and we see our mountains/woods.
I'm a great fan of E-Bikes for commuting being a great alternative to commuting by car and freeing your ride to work from the sweaty, challenging part. But if we reduce our sport to "shredding trails" - is it really more that we win than what we lose? Will it make us happier if we can have a second run on our trail thanks to the motor in our bike? It sounds compelling, but I doubt that our sport will profit.
  • 3 1
 @zede

yeah, i thought it was hilarious that the company making the bikes thought that that would be a good way to promote them, when it is so clearly the opposite.

i had hoped that the public would understand that i was simply being facetious and that in reality, the video perfectly illustrated why i never want to see an e-bike in person, ever.

Great job bike industry. You just created a weak ass dirtbike. Are you proud of yourself? I'm not.
These motors do not belong on bicycles. They belong on motorcycles. Do not take a bicycle, put a motor on it, and then try to tell the world it's still a bicycle.
This is not an "advancement" or "progression" in the sport of mountain biking or cycling in general. This is F'ing Lame.
You want to ride along with a motor? Get a motorcycle or a dirtbike or even an ATV. Even make it an electric one. Great!
You want to ride along on a bicycle? Pedal the damn thing yourself!
Where do I see electric motors being useful? Everywhere except cycling, with one exception. Adaptive sports. The Horizon trike is a great adaptation of a pedal powered offroad capable vehicle that can be used by people with a wide range of physical disabilities. This is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen.
If you have the ability to ride upright on offroad terrain, but lack the fitness or physical stamina to pedal a bike, a dirtbike should be used, not a bicycle with a motor. Imagine e-bikes take off in popularity among mountain bikers. Great. Where is it gonna go from there? Cant keep up with your friends? Simple... Buy a bike with a faster/more powerful motor and longer lasting battery. Your fitness is no longer part of the equation as far as cycling is concerned. What do these e-bikes become as the electric motors and batteries become more powerful? They become motorcycles!

I reckon Spiderman or Captain America could pedal faster than that guy on the ebike so we should ban all Meta Humans and mutants from trails. An electric advantage is just like a genetic advantage. All advantages should be taken away. Super fit people shouldn't be allowed to have gears on their bikes. People with fantastic cornering skills should have to have bikes with higher bottum brackets and slick tyres. Basically all people should be handicapped so that they can't beat ME! OR I could use every cent I have to gain an unfair advantage to beat YOU!

In the United States, and probably most other countries, the majority of mountain biking is done on multi use non-motorized trails, not remote British Columbia sick gnar. Hikers already complain about mountain bikers. Mountain bikers strapping a motor to their drivetrains could potentially be the tipping point that results in a great deal of shut down trails. Anyone with even a modicum of foresight should realize this. Enjoy it while you can. The E-bike apocalypse is in sight.

  • 2 0
Another point that often causes contention on multi-use trails is the speed difference between users and the resulting conflicts ( sometimes physical accidents with other trail users ). More speed that is more easily obtained will cause more conflicts.

When they start showing up on Marin and other Bay Area trails, expect to see an exodus of MTB riders once the last vestige of trails gets shut down there.
  • 1 0
Who needs a trail if you have an ebike you can ride where ever you want. I do feel sorry for all the people in the Western United States as it sounds like there is no where to ride. I had a similar problem when I lived in Florida in that all the land was owned by someone so 90 percent of my riding was illegal trespassing. The last thing you want when trespassing is to make a lot of noise or not be able to jump a fence. Maybe when I grow up I'll be able to lift a dirt bike over a fence or afford my own property to ride on but, until then I'd like to get one of these Ebikes.

It will destroy strava I work hard riding around on my little xc bike to get koms and work equally as hard getting down and for someone on a Santa Cruz v10 with an electric motor, even he turns it off for the downhill he's still going to beat me and that makes me sad...
  • 4 0
Simple, if you get you Kom taken off you just flag the ride. Happens all the time already without e bikes. Anyway following the purist ethos the only challenge you truly face is with yourself so it affects your personal best not one bit. Strava is only a bit of fun anyway There is hardly going to be a massive e bike revolution but the certainly have a place for us older more decrepit riders.
  • 8 0
I'm going to go even further and say your average e bike rider is unlikely to give 2 fucks about strava and probably won't be using it
  • 9 0
I'm open to it. Having lift access trails 10 mins from my house is sweet. But if a DH e-bike was the only way to get 10-15 DH laps in, then I'd be on one no question. But using it for XC or trail is straight up pathetic.
  • 3 0
You wouldn't really have to worry about Strava anymore than you do now. Any guy on a moto can do the same thing and take your KOM. I regularly see ridiculous times on some local trails (90+km/h). If Strava just add a new category for e-bikes then you won't have to compete against each other.

The upshot is, don't take Strava too seriously, you'll just end up ruining your own riding experience.
  • 60 3
E-bikes present major trail conflict issues, particularly in areas where trail access is already a problem for MTB'ers. When we are fighting to get (or keep) more legal singletrack, e-bikes will kill the deal for us.

I admit I have thought about having a little motor on my Tallboy LT like in the picture when on one of our particularly brutal local climbs. That is just a sign that I need to HTFU. Today on an easy climb an overweight guy in flip flops blasted by me at 15mph. I was freaked out for a moment until I saw it was one of those e-Bikes. The idea of being able to have my own personal ski lift built into the bike so I can rail the descents all day sounds great, until I realize this may kill the fitness aspect of the sport. People who don't earn their turns are likely to be softer and flabbier, it seems.

Last point: the author doesn't mention that he runs an e-bike company. Seems like a significant omission; this is more an advertisement (albeit a good one) than an opinion piece.

ALL JUST A BUNCH OF F+!@ING BIKE HIPSTERS, this technology is good and applicable for many things, dont like it dont buy it, quit moaning.
  • 4 0
I also live up in Tahoe. While I get the basic idea of the ebike, it is totally useless if I am not allowed to ride it on any mtb trail. Not one of the miles and miles of fantastic singletrack trails in Tahoe would you be allowed to ride any kind of motorized bike, rendering the ebike pretty much useless. The Sierra club and others will ensure these will never be trail legal. The only trails you would be allowed to ride it on would be the ORV trails where you would get run off the trail by dirt biks and ATV's that would be 10 times as fun as an ebike and cheaper.

So what the hell is the point of a DH mtb with a electric motor attached? Am I missing a piece of the equation?

I do agree that this could be a great tool for someone who is disabled and can't pedal due to their disability. Maybe a special handicap permit system, like a handicap sign allowing cars to park in handicap spaces, could developed to allow disabled people to ride on mtb trails only if they have the permit visible on the bike somewhere. This would greatly limit the use of electric assist only to those who actually need assistance. I don't think I would have any sort of problem getting passed up on a climb by someone on an ebike knowing that this is the only way they can enjoy the sport, but being passed by some out of shape fat ass who doesn't want to pedal uphill because he is f'n too lazy would really piss me off. I can tell you this, if I ever see some lazy a-hole riding one of these ebikes on my favorite non-ORV trails there will be a very unfriendly confrontation between us.
  • 3 0
You're right about the flabby part. I was much more interested in ebikes before I lost a bunch of weight by doing normal mountain biking.
  • 58 5
This is so goofy. If you want a motor then buy a bike built around one. Not some gimmicky toy. Actual dirtbikes can get you REALLY far into the bush without compromises. Bicycles are different in that they are 100% human powered, and that's the beauty of them. E-bikes just bastardize both genres into one little demon child without much of a purpose.

I do however see e-bikes as being a great tool for commuting and city use. Less cars and more of these would be great.

"I can ride to the top of the mountain from my house at a level I have dreamed about for years. I’m like a pro XC racer times 2.".....

Well, my friend ... if you need a motor to pedal at the speeds of a pro XC racer, then ... YOU DON'T DESERVE TO PEDAL THAT FAST. Mind you, mountain bike technology has certainly made us faster over the years, but there has been one constant since the first bicycle was conceived in the 1800s... IT IS A SELF-PROPELLED MACHINE. Call it what you want, but a mountain bike with a motor is not a mountain bike.

Don't get me wrong, I bet it's pretty fun. As our industry develops, there might even be a place for this type of riding (it just needs a new name). For instance, this opens great opportunity for bike park development. I can only imagine ripping one of these from the top of Whistler peak chair, down to mid-station, up to Harmony, over to Creekside and all the way down (that would be sick). And maybe over on the Sunshine Coast they allow you guys to rip these unencumbered on the local trails, but how will this do on the shore (or 85% of the rest of the world)? We already have some pretty loud-mouth activists trying to shut us down for "environmental reasons". Of course the NSMBA does a pretty damn good job keeping them at bay, but how will it help our case when riders in full face helmets start whipping past hikers on their way UP Baden Powell? And forget about the headway we've made convincing BC parks to finally grant us access. I'm sure they'll have a field day when we start rocking "motor assisted" mountain bikes on the trails.

I am farthest from a retro-grouch. I spend way too much money on bikes and I am certainly a sucker for the "latest and greatest". But this is too far. Regardless of what you want to call it and how you want to justify it, keep motors off my bikes and keep "motor bikes" off my trails!!!

You need a $10000 mountain bike to get to the speeds of a XC racer well then you don't deserve to pedal that fast.
This e-mountain biking needs a new name cause it has mountain biking in it and it is done on a mountain bike and e-biking has biking in it and blah blah blah.
  • 31 7
And what about the torque an electric motor constantly creates? You think skidding in corners is bad for a trail, imagine brrrrrraping out of a soft loamy corner. I'm sure trail builders will love that. First you sell your name to Crappy Tire so they can market their disposable bikes to unsuspecting children. Now this? We all know it's tough to make coin in this industry, but this is not the way. You, Bjorn, are ruinin our sport and you have lost a lot of respect for trying to do so.

Shame, shame on you.

Hi Z-man, I love riding up berms, it does not behave like a moto as I tried to point out. You have great traction and ridden properly less erosion than just pedaling as you have a certain amount of momentum behind you. It is really amazing and you need not fear it, one day you may just love it! Unfortunately not every kid can afford a great bike. We make the best bikes we can for the mass market and are stoked to at the very least give them an opportunity to begin riding.

Cmon zman, he's got a great idea here not some scheming plan to take over the biking industry. And with the kranked bikes, why don't you go after Schwinn for giving you an opportunity to get into the sport without costing your parents a bloody fortune?
  • 5 4
In my opinion this is maybe just is in the wrong discipline of biking (a better market would be the commuter and all mountain areas,as this would force people to be careful how and where they ride these bikes.)

Bjorn how the hell can you say that when even kranked themselves use 'braaaap' to sell their kits!!!! The following quote is direct from the site!

Sales and Installation

Sales of the Ego-kit on this site are restricted to Canada and the United States. In order to properly warranty the kits we make it a policy to install the Ego-kits ourselves. This ensures the optimal performance and reliability. Our experience is that new user installed kits suffer from the inexperience of the installer. Said another way, we have blown up a bunch of kits by installing and using them improperly. Now we know what we are doing!! So, the reality is that you will need to send us your bike and have the Ego-Kit professionally installed and tested. Installation costs $300 plus shipping fees.

If you are interested in purchasing, please email us at info@krankedbikes.com.

BraAAap!

Sorry Bjorn, I won't be doing any business with you until you distance yourself from this e-mountainbike crap. Sell e-bikes for commuting and I'll get behind you 100%. Do the right thing.

Imagine Joey the newb shredding trails at 2x racerboi speeds. E-bike writing checks that his skills can't cash. This on sections of trail that weren't sanitized for newb at 2x racerboi speed(climbs and flats). Newb fly into blind corner with world class speed! Equestrian/hiker/random biker must now pay for Joey's E-muscles and poor judgement.

We build skills as we build fitness, and both take time. When the time comes that our speeds become dangerous, we will *hopefully* have mastered the appropriate skills to control our rigs.

I do not support this industry driven 'revolution'. Non-motorized trails are not the place for any form of motorized vehicle, E-bikes included. E-biker will never be accepted by those of us who earned it. I vow to give the stank eye to any motorized bike I see on a non-moto trail.

Allmountin you seem to be under the impression that these bikes will be bought by new people coming into mountain biking . I'm sorry but I think on the whole most new people to the sport are more likely to go down the road the rest of us have followed just getting the standard mountain biking. I think ebikes will appeal more to people like myself . I've been mountain biking for over 20 years now and sad to say one of my knees is starting to struggle resulting in my rides getting shorter and less frequent . I'm intrested in the idea that one of these bikes could allow me to keep enjoying the sport I love . It wouldn't be about blasting into corners or up hill at world class speed for which I had not payed my dues. These bikes could keep people who are struggling with injury or illness in our sport. I'd hate to see loads of these bikes on the trails but I'd have no problem seeing someone pass me on a climb on one if that's the only way he could get out. But if it's some arse who has more money than sense who's going to claim a kom on strava them I'll laugh knowing he's missing out. Enjoy your rides
  • 5 1
I'm with you on that. No one seems to be getting it at all

Seems like everybody's looking at ebikes as a bit of a cheat rather than a possible aid for those who could do with a helping hand . Hopefully the more mountain bikers + more voices + more trails.

What website do you gentlemen think you came to? This is a website for the avid cyclists who are trendy and either fast, or think their fast. I respect elders, so I digress. I personally as a seemingly career bike mechanic, have worked on these awful contraptions, and I agree with everything Allmountain said. I can stop my freight train. The d-bags who brought in these e-bikes, told me how they laughed at a XC cyclist who was startled off the trail by them rumbling up around them...f*ck E-Bikes! At least on mountain bicycle trails. These guys, purchased two e-bikes to get around wilderness hunting restrictions, and then also rumble around people, passing them on the shoulders of trail unanounced, snickering at their electric silence. The people who buy them, will for the most part, be disrespectful to our sport, and bring together those who oppose human powered cycling. All on account of lithium ion batteries, which I haven't heard anyone mention how toxic the production of these babies are yet either...Don't let these electric stepchildren ruin our centuries old human powered tradition. Elderly have many available e-assisted mobility devices. Your time will come.

"electric assist mountain bikes are not motorbikes" ::::: this statement is misleading and disingenuous, especially coming from a profiteer of the technology.

The trail use agencies and many trail users will view a bike with a motor as a motorized vehicle, which will (at least from a legal standpoint) ban them from bike trails in the US. Of course that won't stop lots of entitled idiots from rationalizing that it's "just a bike". I think our local community in north Oregon would self-police this sort of thing but elsewhere it will create LOTS of trail conflicts.

I can also understand the appeal. I'm saving my pennies for an enduro motorcycle right now so I can get further into the backcountry and explore. The ebike would allow me to get further into the backcountry, but not as far or fast as a motorcycle.

Ebikes are here to stay, but they are NOT bicycles and do not deserve to be considered such. Bicycles are human powered. Period.

Kranked bikes (Bjorn's brand) aren't pedal assist. They have pedals, but they have a throttle, so you can ride them like a moto if you want and never put a muscle to the cranks. Pedal assist, like the Bosch system, will not kick in unless you add your own effort. There is no throttle on a pedal assist e-bike. Both have value in the recreation market. To form a reasonable opinion, we probably should consider the future evolution of both systems. As batteries get lighter and power density increases, the BRAAAP factor most certainly will. I recall when pitbikes were popular, every jump line in Southern California was being ripped to shreds by pitbike poachers. The possibility that public land managers in North America will embrace powerful electric-powered bikes in the back country and that e-bike charging stations will be popping up at trailheads...well, we shall see.

What is probably happening here, is that the off-road capability off today's dual-suspension mountain bikes has become the seed of a future evolution - a more efficient, very lightweight motorcycle, powered by electricity, that will soon lose its pedals altogether and become separated from the family tree of cycling. The first motos, after all, also had pedals for many years. History repeats itself. As electric bikes evolve further from their bicycle roots, they will be pushed off trail networks intended for non-motorized use, to areas where their speed and impacts are in line with similar user-groups.

And, yes, I do have some experience riding e-bikes off road. As absolutely fun as it is to climb like Nino Shurter and shred the downs on a long-travel AM sled, when the judge and jury are called to decide the ultimate fate of e-bikes on trails in North America, I will be sitting on the opposite side of the courtroom. Many mountain bikers have dedicated their lives to forge a place for cyclists to share public trails. I think we should honor their efforts and proceed with caution. - RC
  • 4 2
ebikes are motos, for moto trails and forest roads only, simple as that. they will let us explore more and have lots of fun in the backcountry. It is already established that if you ride a moto on multi-user singletrack you will/ and should get a fine and be banned. props to those people that like to explore the woods and forest road systems a little more. i saw in one of the comments above, using it to get to the top of an ORV descent, is nothing more than shuttling your dh bike, but without a pick-up truck.
  • 3 2
themountain, pedal assisted bikes still have varying levels of assistance. On the higher levels it allows you to accelerate with more torque than would be humanly possible. This is most certainly increasing erosion, which is the satan spawn of cycling, and going uphill greatly increases the shearing forces on the trail. They do increase erosion, and that is why our mountain biking trails get shut down. Take your moto bikes to china, where they came from!
  • 2 3
Increasing erosion..?? Are you serious?? Ever watched the machines they work with in the forest...that creates erosion, not a 3inch wide mountainbike tire.
  • 16 3
"As mountain bikers we need to stick together and embrace change in a positive way."

Ummmm, no. No we don't. Sure, we all have our preferences on riding type, wheel size, flats or clipless, and the endless polarizing topics that get debated here on PB. But I think where you will see the MTB community galvanized as a whole, is when it comes to our distaste of this so-called "e-bike revolution". Ain't happening.
  • 4 0
I'm more of a downhill guy and climbs are not my forte but I still get a huge amount of satisfaction every single time I successfully climb a section that was previously impossible or still very hard to do for me when I ride my AM bike. If you add that to the fact that I see riding as a great way to stay in shape, there is absolutely no point for me to buy one.

I'm skint too it's kind of a moot point liking the idea of an e bike as I can't afford one anyway. In summary though the best bit of natural descending near me is about 20 miles away, it's a full days XC ride to appreciate but it so needs hitting with a downhill bike but it's so remote taking the dh isn't an option.  Because every Calorie you eat takes 10 Calories of fossil fuel inputs to produce and get to you. Coal fired power stations are more efficient than your body is. Nuclear, Solar or Wind are more efficient still and can all be used to recharge the batteries of your e-bike. E-bikes are the most sustainable means of transport there are. All solar racers use electric motors and light weight bicycle technology.

Man you guys are so judgmental it makes me sick, I bought one of these and had a ton of fun accessing shuttle trails by myself out here in Squamish. It was a great tool to have, super fun, and killer for dh. I still rode my Xc bike a ton, rode my trials and moto too. They do no damage when climbing and are totally an assist to pedalling not a replacement. Getting pissed because you just worked hard to get to the same place that someone else didn't is just you feeding your ego. Go have fun! If someone else also wants to have fun without working as hard let em! I know in the states everyone's political panties are always bunched so certainly if they were to threaten a trails ability to stay open yeah don't let em on. Main point to my rant is quit being so uppity, try it, it's friggin rad. And for gods sake quit giving dirt bikers, down hillers, and everyone else not doing what you personally deem as "the best" the stink eye. Most of us are sewn of the same cloth, we love the outdoors, love activity, and love adventure, don't hate just get stoked!

Kranked system is not pedal-assist. It is throttle operated. That is the main problem here.
  • 4 0
If you've ridden one on the trails you'd know that if you are not pedaling pretty hard with it it will shut down fairly quickly and you'll need to wait for it to cool off. Its made to be a pedal assist. Yes it has a throttle to engage it but you dont really use just the throttle you must pedal. Its a pretty bad ass little piece of engineering and they've gone out of their way not to make it a dirt bike kind of experience. IMO its best use is to get DH bikes up shuttle trails so you can run more laps in less time. Also its not crazy powerful, we're not talking about maching past people at insano speeds on the climbs, Its more like your Lance Armstrong doped out of your mind and everyone else is just club level roadies fueled by sunflower seeds and granola. I would also say it is not capable of getting a DH rig up most DH trails going the wrong way. The trail needs to be something you could climb without the motor, with the motor it will just be a lot faster. Maybe its not your thing and thats ok, just dont buy one. No need to hate though, someone put a lot of time and thought into its conception and there does exist a good application for those that are into it.

I could see this technology being beneficial in eliminating shuttling and aiding commuting, however those are really the main contexts I see it thriving in. To say this is a revolution or will drastically alter the landscape of cycling seems a little farfetched to me. I am sure we are all well aware that cycling has adapted and evolved over time, although I feel the addition of electronic assist has little to do with the core of cycling. People seem to assert that the cycling community meets innovation with contempt. I think as consumers it is wise to be skeptical of products that stand to drastically alter to future of the sport. Freeriding, 29 inch wheels, carbon frames and, 1by11 drivetrains to me are in a completely different category than electric assist. Perhaps my views are archaic but this innovation does not stand to benefit bikes directly or the design of them, to me it is more of a unnecessary add on. If this ever began to be integrated into the majority of bikes I personally would be dismayed.

and don't get me started on the added diversification of resources.
I sincerely hope in the future mountainbiking is still going to bring people to places "no cars go", otherwise where is the compensation for our overly technological everyday life?
I don't want an e bike when I'm in the peaceful woods, just circles turning circles.
that's all the magic about bikes.

Here in the east bay area most trails we ride we share with hikers and horse back rides I don't think e bikes flying up and down will help all three users coexist. Bad enough mountain bikes are frowned upon under our own power. At a e motor and I can see our trail access being taken away from us!

We ride bikes for fun, not for the environment. I have never heard a downhiller call himself "green" cause of his hobby.

It doesn't really even matter because hobbies don't ruin this planet. The way masses transport to work on a daily basis, the irresponsible factories polluting way more than necessary, the amount of stuff we buy for no need (e-MTB's included) and the lack of recycling are things that do.

Is the selling point really 'further and faster'? Because I ride for the ride. It doesn't cease to be enjoyable if I didn't go a certain distance in a certain time. If you've had a nice two hour ride, are you really gonna think 'damn I wish I'd covered more ground today'? And if you're one of those people who thinks like this then you're probably not gonna want assistance, are you?

  • 15 6
 No just no
  • 5 1
Maybe this has already been said, but I didnt see it yet (holy hell this has elicited a ton of responses) but there is one place I see this as a great thing - Shuttling (or doing away with it). For primarily shuttle assisted locations, or for those locations where primarily DH trails are accessed by a fire road/FSR that is closed to public vehicle use. If I saw people using eBikes as a means to get up to the trail heads INSTEAD OF USING A VEHICLE I would applaud them.

Say what you will from your high horses of "I grind up every fire road and love the pain". But there are always people shuttling - and if there is a more environmentally friendly way to get the people who don't want to pedal, or want to get out on the big bike and have some fun without spending 3/4 of their time pushing up a gravel road to the top of the hill then I am all for it. Surely you would be less annoyed by someone zipping by you on the fire road on an electric DH bike than getting lapped continuously by a big pick-up with 2 bikes over the tailgate while you breathe in the exhaust as it passes.

People who want to ride down hills and not pedal up are going to find ways to do it, so why not let them do it in a way with the least environmental impact? I do however agree that we would need to keep an eye out and "educate" them to the fact that the electric assist is best used on the road and not the trail.

What an exciting perspective pushing discussion. Bjorn & Mike, thanks for representing the two polarities and for sitting-with the discomfort and potency of the comments.

I learned a thing or two chasing Bjorn on his ebike; on technical climbs, he'd elegantly roll on up slippery and rooty sections while I spun out and dabbed; so I visualized applying the same steady and consistent power that an ebike motor produces during my pedal strokes and had some great success.

Knowing Bjorn personally, I also learned that his passion for his ebike is genuine and deep, it's my sense that what charges him up is the desire to make this technology available for the right people in hopes that it'll contribute positively to their lives like it is to his. Now there are finer details and valid points of argument in the comments above, and those details that can be worked out when and if need be, but big picture, anyone who is willing to risk reputation, image, and finances in order to pursue and share a passion that is personally meaningful gets my vote of confidence.

 I agree.

Although I'm in pretty good pedaling shape, I would love to try one of these out. I hate pedaling to the top. If the goal is to have fun and maximize the time going downhill then why not?
  • 5 4
Agreed. If you could get 2 or 3 or 4 more runs in a day then why not. Every single industry goes through evolutions that people call cheating. How did the bicycle start out... One speed went to 30 or so. Coaster brakes went to hydrolics that are unreal powerfull. Heavy thick steal has gone to thin carbon. Full DH rigs can be under 30lbs now for sh$t sakes.
I ride cause i enjoy it. If this can add to the fun then why not? Ill always love cruisin around on vintage machines but nobody rides mtb's cause bikes are the most efficiant machine ever built. We do it cause its fun.
I think people need to open their minds a little bit and chill.

And this idea that it's 'fun'. I don't dispute that. Lots of things are fun. Shagging girls in the bum is fun, but it's still just plain wrong. Or is that what people are saying, it's fun BECAUSE it's wrong!? You feel a bit naughty? It's fun, but when your mates find out you've got a motor, there'll be trouble! But interestingly that does sort of fit the image, will ebikers become the equivalent of a group of young punks that hijacked a mobility cart or two and are racing them round a busy car park, because 'it's fun'? Despite being a f*cking nuisance, and looking like dicks.

I will gladly rock up for a ride with my mates on an e bike. I'm sure there will be ridicule but they will probably secretly glad they aren't waiting for me to catch up on every climb, especially in winter.

If youre riding 3x more trail on one of these you ought to be doing 3x more trail maintenance. No dig, no ride.
  • 6 3
Wow, sure does seem to be a lot of anger and hate here.
This really is one of those opinion things, if you don't like it then don't ride one....but....and this is the beauty of this sport, we make it what we want it to be. If for someone else it means riding an e-bike then so be it, really who cares?
Personally I think a motor of any kind on a bicycle is crossing a line of some sort, is it moving into trials or moto? Maybe not but it doesn't strike me as mountain biking either where to a certain extent what we do is defined by the fact that the bike is non-motorized, even if we are using lifts and trucks.
Of course this is just my opinion, if someone else wants to ride an e-bike then go ahead, I don't care, that's their decision. As long as they are not ruining the trails any more then a non-e-bike-equipped-mountain bike then go nuts.
Christ we are all just doing this to have fun, it's not some big moral or ethical dilemma as it seems to be here. If you're going to put so much effort into hating or wanting to change something there are a lot bigger problems in the world that you could be concentrating on other then whether an e-bike is a bicycle or not.
Just my 2 cents.

Get off ya arses get dirte learn crashing sweating pain is part of mtb not making everything easy, its hard for a reason hence why its the best mtb that is. Technology is great but its destructive when not used to improve the basis of what is mtb. I jumped on 1x11 XX1 immediately why because it made mtb simpler better without altering the guts of the mtb bike in fact 1x11 is closest to the purest form if the mtb bike than triples trickle down from road bikes ever were, dual ring was an early attempt to break away from the roadie crowd. E bikes are not bikes what ever u wrap it in. Just encourge people to b fat and lazy arses, dumb down more trail end up with less and less land access so some other fat cat gets rich.

For me personally, mountain biking is a work/reward ordeal, and I truly believe that the harder you work the greater the reward. Aside from this, I also don't want to be fat and nasty, and I would be without mountain biking. This is why e-bikes aren't for me. As well, if these become acceptable and commonplace they will eventually be allowed on the trails I use, and as they become more advanced over time, I can see them putting a hurting on the trails. Perhaps not, but as a bit of a purist, I'd rather see the e-bike fall from favor. It isn't mountain biking.

THE DEVILS MACHINE AND HAS NO PLACE ON ANY OF THE TRAILS I HAVE BUILT!
WHATS THAT THING BOLTED TO A BIKE? OH ITS A MOTOR! SO ITS A MOTORE CYCLE! END OF. GET FIT OR GET A LICENCE!
  • 2 1
correct, in the UK it's classed as a 'Mechanically Propelled Vehicle' and you can't ride it on a pavement or a trail without breaking the law. If you went on the road with it, it would need insurance and an MOT.... If you head off onto your local trail it's the same as riding a motorcycle through the woods... not allowed in the UK I'm afraid
  • 2 0
In the uk you are braking the law riding any bicycle on the pavement. I'm not sure where your getting your facts from but electric assisted cycles have been on the road a while for some time and don't need an mot. They do have to have a limit on their speed though
  • 5 3
So much hate and vitriol in here. I pedal a 30+ pound Pitch 14-16 miles over a couple of hours on each weekly outing, and love every minute of it, but I'd still love to try an off-road oriented e-bike. I don't think I would take it out on my favorite trail system, but I would definitely go find a place to get crazy on it.
  • 3 1
The only place these motorized bikes are going to be allowed to ride is on trails that allow motorized vehicles, in which case your e-bike is going to get passed by dirtbikes just like that xc rider got passed by the e-bike in the video.
  • 3 0
The placement of the actual motor is terrible. Is it rock proof? Doubt it. Then you're stuck "further and faster" out in the middle of nowhere having to ride that heavy bitch out of the woods.
  • 3 1
i have ridden with bjorn while he was on his e bike. it was no big deal. its pretty quiet and nothing like a moto bike..i didn't become a devil worshipper..they aren't cheap so don't plan on seeing one everywhere too soon. i have also ridden one mounted to a commuter bike. FASTEST e-bike i have ridden and i have had the chance to test a few now. this technology is only getting better.

This is so hilarious! It sounds like a mosquito. Here is an idea, maybe they can make some sort of exhaust sound device. Then people can get that Braaap sound that makes everyone feel tougher then they are. Battery powered water jet propulsion on surf boards, E-motors on mountain bikes.... man there are some lazy people in this world!
  • 1 0
I have such a device... I ride my mountain bike on gnarly, technical Sedona with my 22 month old grandson in a backpack carrier on my back, and I have taught him to say, "BRRRRM! BRRRM!" whenever the clims get tough! This is the best motivation to pedal harder that I have ever found!!!
  • 2 0
 I guess it all depends; are we talking about 26" e-bikes, 29 inch e-bikes or 650B e-bikes?

Seriously, I think that there are several points that need to be addressed here.

Let me start by saying that I have been friends with Bjorn since 1998, when we worked together filming Kranked 3. I think that he is a great guy, and I think that he wholeheartedly believes in what he is working on now with regards to e-bikes.

That being said, I must disagree with him on a couple of points.
  • 5 4
First, an e-bike IS a motorbike. It has an electric MOTOR. Period. That makes it a MOTOR bike or a MOTORcycle, if you will. And it should be subject to the same rules as motorcycles. Perhaps the ones that he is selling are "electric assist" and the motor only kicks in when you are pedaling, but many brands can basically be used without pedaling, and it is virtually impossible to tell which type any particular e-bike is by just looking at it. Some e-bikes can even be switched between "electric assist" mode and "electric motorcycle" mode.

You also cannot tell without riding a particular e-bike, how powerful it is or isn't. I have a friend, Paul, who is making his own custom on-road e-bikes, and he sets his up to work as electric motorcycles. They are extremely powerful and fast. A bit too much of a twist of the wrist at any speed under 10 miles per hour, and it will likely loop over backwards, and dump you on your @ss! He has one e-bike that will top 85 miles per hour on flat ground! Paul's e-bikes are truly "electric motorcycles", and if he made an "off-road" version of one of his brand of e-bike, it could certainly tear up a mountain biking trail in ways that a regular, pedal powered mountain bike can not. And the battery and motor technology just keeps getting stronger and more powerful. At what point do we say, "This amount of power is O.K., but this one is too much"? How do you enforce that kind of rule on the trail? What happens when some genius soups one up, and makes it three times as powerful as what the manufacturer's specs painted on the frame says it is? The only way that I can see to deal with these issues, is to treat all bikes with electric motors as "motorcycles". Otherwise, as other people here have pointed out, the logical conclusion of treating any e-bikes the same as plain old pedal powered mountain bikes, is that we will eventually get hit wit a Sierra Club, and lose access for regular mountain bikes.
  • 5 2
Secondly, Bjorn's point about "As mountain bikers we need to stick together and embrace change in a positive way." makes little sense to me, as some people absolutely despise some changes, and it's not like they can just change the way that they feel about something, especially if they are very passionate about their feelings. That makes as much sense as saying that, "As vegetarians we need to stick together and embrace broccoli in a positive way." What if you really just don't like broccoli?

That said, I don't hate e-bikes, Bjorn's or any others. I don't hate gas powered motorcycles either. In fact, I used to race motocross back in the late 1970's and have owned several motorcycles since then, and will most likely own more of them in the future. And I ran into Bjorn again, at Interbike a couple of years ago, and I tried his brand of e-bike for a few minutes, (until the security at the Sands Convention Center threatened to kick me out and confiscate the bike, if I didn't stop riding it inside the place!) and I had a blast! These things are really fun! But I think that they have their place. And I think their place is any place that motorcycles are allowed.

My final conclusion on e-bikes? While I enjoy riding both mountain bikes and off-road motorcycles, and would certainly enjoy riding one of Bjorn's e-bikes, I am quite unlikely to purchase an e-bike...at least until it has the power, range and reliability, (or better) than a 250 cc dirt bike currently has...and then I won't be needing it to have pedals.
  • 3 1
What's the use of an e-bike when biking is about fitness ? But in some cases it can be handy : when both Mr and Mrs want to ride together and the Mrs hasnt' got the strength or fitness to stay with Mr. She can keep up with him and doesn't get frustrated and he doesn't have to wait all the time and get frustrated. So that's a good motivation for riding together.
  • 3 1
Motorized is motorized. These bikes are illegal on most state and federal park land. And other users already hate us for the downhill speeds. What reaction do you expect when we start zipping up the hills at 20mph? We'll all get banned, that's what. You want to ride e-bikes, great. Take it to the ORV park where they belong. Stay off our trails.
  • 2 0
Wow are we living in china for f*ck sakes if you dont want ebikes on the trails then bikes dont belong there ether its not a grey area its black and white ether were free to do as we like with respect of course or we cant do anything at all im surprised that there is this many ignorant ass holes on here I thought mtb was about getting out. And enjoying. What the mother has. To offer. E bikes. Dont polute. Like a dirt bike and most of u pricks drive to the trails now that is a real travisty and stacy koht yourrr a rrreal piece of work budy lol you cant pedal at all and take a deseil powered lift fo get to the. Top of the hill. You would think a e bike would make 4 cross a viable thing but im super glad none of your opinions mean s**t cuz im shure if it was up to u rosa parks never would of gotten to the front of the bus good job bjorn saport yah 100% and lets see any of these ignoranos stop me from using mine

Soooooo where does the eBike end and the motorcycle begin? Right now it's a 40 pound DH bike with a 1/2 hp assist motor. But soon for the next model year "such and such" bike co introduces it's new 5hp motor, and then 40hp motor. Pretty soon you are sharing bike lane space in the city with a guy on a 150 pound 50hp bike going 60 mph (hey it's got pedals man!) and trying to deal with the guy on the trail boosting 70ft triples at 80mph. It's going to be like trying to ride a lap during a motocross race. If it has a motor it IS a MOTOR-CYCLE by definition.
  • 1 0
Its stops by having a PEDELEC(25km/hmax, assisted, light, easy maintenance, small battery) or a 40 pound downhill sled with a gas grip, 2000w+ engine , enormous batteries and pedals only to rest the feet(thats the one, most of the US boys here are talking about)...the least should be banned from bicycle trails...I am in for that !
  • 1 0
Why not have the bicycle end where the limits of human power end at about 1800 watts?
  • 1 0
1800w...?? Show me that human being! Razz
  • 1 0
Nathan Rennie. Most circle track olympic sprinters put out about that if only for a few seconds.
  • 1 0
Thats peak power, for a second or three...a trained athlete does 450-500W contiues at max...big difference Wink
  • 1 0
A 500W kit will run about that peak. Laws in the US allow 600W ebikes on the road without a license, brake and turning lights and registration. I see no reason that these should not be allowed on trails. It would be cool to have more power than this but idiots would ruin it of course. 500W kits offer a better power to weight and better distance. They claim 50km on a flat road so figure maybe 15-18 km on the trail. Most uber athletes can out do this on their own steam so I don't see fat trail destroying hoons getting to any super exclusive trails. The 1200W kits are usually rated to 30km on flat roads and most estimates are with some pedalling no grade or wind on a rigid bike. Some fat guy with a suped up ebike isn't going to get more than 8 or 9 kms into the backcountry.
  • 5 1
My trails are un official and this kind of non sense would cause the kinds of complaints that would get them destroyed. Plain and simple.
  • 2 0
honestly, I do not like this concept. An e-bike can be fine for long daily journeys, going to work etc. But for the Mountainbike, it's no longer a sport if you can do everything without getting tired. Mountainbiking would lose interest, I'll be not proud to arrive at the top of the mountain with an e-bike. Mountainbike is just a sport where we need to progress, to exceed our limits, simply through our physical and mental, with no other engine than our legs.
  • 4 2
NO, No, nO, NOOOO, How many ways is this wrong? ALot of ways a lot of old person lazy wannabe ways. I work in a bike shop and these things are destined to fail in every conceivable way. A bike is a bike. A motorbike is a motorbike . Just suck it up and use a gas powered one, you're not saving the environment using these things. Silly Silly Silly!
  • 2 0
I don't think these dedicated converted bikes are the answer. Have a look at rubbee.co.uk, this device sits on your seatpost and drives your rear wheel, it can be detached in two minutes then you can ride the trails normally. I'd love to have the opportunity to commute to the trails but adding a motor that needs to be fitted for an extra $300 and carrying around a 5kg battery in a backpack doesn't seem like it's going in the right direction, doing that makes it a semi-permanent motorized bicycle = motorcycle. I hate the idea of riding down a trail with an extra 5kg strapped to me and 3kg to the bike.
  • 4 2
You are pushing the limits, DH performance at XC speeds yea right any more propped sales philosophy? I know it works, bravo bravo. I think you are actually believing in what you are saying, zero BS the way you see it. It is called "denial". What if your friends buys one? Buahaha, unless you buy one too you can't ride together anymore. You are alone or are you a Lone Wolf. Right label can do wonders like climate change vs global warming, or greenhouse effect. MX bike is built around the engine?! You know, wheel was no invention two wheels were.

Now, I have been told to eat sallads and protein and starches for all my life. There's desserts though and one day I decided I will put all those lessons to garbage and eat just ice cream. Way to go.

How open minded of you... Well, if you like to use such trivias then get mine: I am not negative, I am just asking questions, it is about common sense, it is critical thinking. Optimism? I am very optimistic about it that people who truly love that sport who are passionate about bikes, will never buy one. I have that much faith in common sense of humanity i like your pitch, you are in the wrong business, you should run for congress
  • 2 0
just because we can, doesn't mean we should. I've already advised our local land managers to begin thinking about how to handle ebikes; NEMBA's position is that they are classed with other motorized vehicles, which I personally agree with. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds over time...
  • 2 0
Those of you who are comparing e-bikes to motorcycles should probably consider golf carts when they're in the market for buying a new car. An e-bike is as much a motorcycle/dirt bike as a golf cart is a Baja rally truck.

It's actually probably better to compare an e-mtb to an off-road segway.
  • 2 0
Theyre fine for people who want to go fast all the time and rush through the ride, but they look ridiculous to people who just want to get out into nature on their own power and enjoy the journey

Once WalMart starts making eBikes, its all over.

And whats with all this "I ride longer on an eBike BS"? I mean some of us have done 24hr races... Stop being such a puss, and pedal!
  • 2 1
Haha, I would love to be the guy on the V10 in that vid Smile
It definitely looks like he is having more fun than the other guy... but maybe both are having fun, just in different ways. At least he didn't blow gas exhaust fumes at him as he was passing.

Although, I prefer full pedal assist only e-bikes like these:
www.haibike.de/produkte_detail_en,72221,19679,detail.html

When Pinion get this baby up and running: www.motorizedbicyclesportal.com/pinion-e18-drive-system.html I will be building a bike around it for sure. Full DH squishy, slack awesomeness with a nice range and the ability to not kill myself getting up the hill (but I still have to pedal up, which is better than shuttling or taking a lift).
  • 1 0
Reading this article and reading some comments, is all I can think about is how this will just be another bike in the arsenal. Because I know that everyone writing about this has at least two bikes depending on what kind of ride they want to go on, this will be no different.
  • 1 0
I'm lazy yet I don't want motorized vehicles on trails. The "evolution" of this sport would surely be better, faster motors, with more torque, higher speeds, etc., etc...
I also love that fact that many trail efforts are supported simply because a human powered vehicle poses less threat to many of the people that have the power to allow, or disallow our ability to ride in an area.
Yep, there's a place for these bikes but it's not on most of the local trail networks that we support as mountain bikers.
  • 2 1
I dont know what all the the fuss is about , too many haters out there. While I have no intention of riding an ebike , I can certainly see the benefits which in my opinion outweigh the negatives. Some people who have injuries such as back or knee problems while still able to ride endure alot of pain to continue enjoying this awesome sport, those people will greatly benefit from this and will be able to go further without as much discomfort. Seriously people, we all love the sport so what if someone has an ebike, id say thumbs up to them for making the effort to get out on a bike as long as they have respect for the trails and other bikers. Whoever is concerned about the Obese guy on the trail, thats a pretty weak argument , the obese guy probably wouldnt be interested on getting on the trail inm the first place, secondly hed probably break his bike after a couple of runs and give , so what is the big problem. There are far bigger issues to worry about in this world than ebike domination.
  • 5 1
not feeling it. a bicycle should be based on a sense of "purity". this just doesn't cut it for my 2c. no soul, gimmicky
  • 4 2
For the record, I am opposed to e-bikes making their way onto trails designated for non-motorized use only. Otherwise they are just another form of motorcycle and should be treated as such.
  • 1 0
How robust are these things what happens when you come off are he paritlarly strong or do you have to spend another 2k buying another motor?
Also his heavy are these things? Do they just ruin the fun of MTB and way, I don't know I've never used one but please could someone shed some light on this issue
  • 2 1
 Dear Mr. Enga,

newsflash -> european countries will put taxes on electric bicycles (which you stated are no motorbikes). The rising number of sales will give them a lot of money throught taxes and most of the electric bikes are (according to national laws) to fast that the owneris allowed to use it without a numer plate in my country.

This is of course not the case in every country.

I tried 29er and electric bikes (model 2014 full-sus) and I don´t like it. It would be of more use if the ressources spent on electric bikes would be used to develop cheaper components and bikes for current "normal" bikes.

...just my opinion and I am not a fan of electric bikes at all

I did a tough 32 mile loop with a friend on a home built e-DH bike. At first I was like "this sucks --he can effortlessly go 30mph and I'm killing myself to keep up." By the time it was over I'd gotten over all that and was just happy to have someone pushing the pace. Riding with him normally sucks worse because he is slow. Of course, I have not ridden with him since either.

Forgot to add I'd like to get one of these so I can take the wife, kids or visitors out to the cool spots without putting them through a 2 year training program first.
  • 8 1
So they can crashed and be heli-lifted out? If they can't pedal out to the spot, then they likely don't have the skills to be on dirt.
  • 4 3
Sometimes bikes are just about having fun, not about how is the most hard core, who is the fastest and go go the longest....some people shuttle some people take helis others ride klunkers.... I have been riding for 25+ years???I ride because I love to ride ....I don't have anything to prove to anybody???I go to my fair share of trail days! Helped with trail advocacy and. Hand out water and bananas at Xc races , and absolutely go nuts cheering during a cyclocross race....and I love it all..including my pedal assist mountain bike...does that make me less of a bike enthusiast?

Personally I was not sure if it was the right thing for me, but then I tried it and loved it - some common misconceptions....it's far from a motorbike....Yes it has a moto and on paper it sounds burly, but it's not... The bike is too light and you will simply loop out as it does not have the necessary weight and tire size
An e-bike does not need to weigh 60 pounds...my slash weighs in at 37 pounds...I can easily bunny hop it without the engine ...yes I " cheat" on the way up the fire road...when I get to the top I turn the engine off and ride my bike down ? How does this make me any different then the guy who shuttled up and rides down on his 40 pound downhill rig ... I think the whole point of this new crop of ebikes is to maintain the bike feeling hence you want to keep the weight down

I leave you with this video of nico vouilloz riding after his double knee surgery...on an electric assist bike....haters gonna hate....but for those of us that just ride to have fun...well they are darn fun...

I think I could dig if we got some shit like a ground-up machine designed around a motor that also contained a gearbox all centrally located low (around crank spindle), like if it would be possible to put a 5 speed gearbox in there with the motor rotor & shit & each one could engage the sprocket depending what power source is used. This bolted on shit just doesn't do it for me. Like bolting a 2-stroke to a bicycle. I know a guy that does that kinda shit. He's the kinda guy that has brown teeth. Blank Stare

Do it from the ground-up in a nice clean package à la Tollwut or Jezken or some shiz. I could totally dig a Digga with an EM. Say'n?

I can guarantee that e-bikes will undo every good thing ever done by mountain bikers in California and will spell the end of mountain bike access. Access is already a touchy subject even though we're the only ones putting in serious hours doing the trail building and maintenance. If we have to work this hard just to maintain access, all it takes is a heavy DH bike with a motor on it colliding with another trail user, or scaring them into jumping off a cliff to avoid a collision, and it's over. Every municipality will protect themselves from the liability by shutting down trails to mountain bikes. Joe old guy on the city council and angry soccer mom aren't going to care when you say that "e-bikes are the problem." All they are going to hear is that bikes are the problem.
  • 3 3
Ok so say you get a electric bike, now your going to ride up the trail that 99% of the rest of us are ridding down, and the 99% of us that almost die trying to avoid hitting you will beat your ass just like we beat 4weelers and dirt bikers that rid up our trails. The people that will ride thees abominations are the people that don't want to put any effort in to get the reward, they are the kind of people you never see out building grooming or maintaining trails, cus they are lazy.

I rode an E-bike yesterday, i was at a bike demo all afternoon, after my 2nd demo of a normal bike i had really bad cramps and i'd began to worry that my day was over. but i managed to get an e-bike and fit in an extra loop before going home. the bike wasn't as nimble, but it meant i could stay out, and i was thinking if i got old and my kids were getting good and i wanted to help them train, i could keep up and help push them, and even support them by lugging more gear. it's obvious E bikes aren't going to be everyones cup of tea, i know i wouldn't buy one (yet) i'd rather have the benefits of better fitness and a nimble bike, but it seems wrong to criticize a machine that might get more people out on the trails, more people buying bike stuff, more people wanting trials to be protected and built... power to E bikes!

Electricity is not as good for the planet as just pedalling. Those batteries will need charging and to do that you need a massive power station to generate electricity to charge those batteries. You don't need a power station running constantly to charge a human. Just food and drink. As it is we use so much electricity generated by these fossil fuel powered generators at power stations. What makes you think having to charge this bike up every night along with your phone/laptop/iPad is going to save the world? Not to mention the manufacture of them will require more energy as they are more complicated with more parts than your average DH bike. Also they are heavier which will make them feel sluggish in the corners, especially on more technical mtb trails. Personally I will never ride one. I see no point when motorcycle manufacturers are working on electric motorbikes which will go faster and serve more of a purpose than these. You might as well buy one of those because the bicycle is a machine powered solely by the person riding it. That's the beauty of it.
  • 3 3
I dont need a massive powerstation just for my charger, i just plug it into my convenient already existing wall socket.

Do you ever actually ride your bike or do you just sit here replying to people's comments unnecessarily? I do not want electric bikes on my local trails, or even in the sport at all. End of.
You're probably too lazy to actually ride a proper bicycle so that'll be the reason why as I scrolled down the page I saw your name every 5 comments or so. Also it's probably why you want an electric bike, so you don't have to try so hard to keep up with everyone else on the trails. Go and ride your human powered bicycle and don't come back until every muscle in your body is aching and you are able to keep pace with the other trail users without almost having a heart attack.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to bed. I need to rest so I can ride bikes tomorrow.
  • 1 0
Nice sweeping generalisation there. Perhaps if you didn't take things so seriously you might have more fun.
  • 1 0
You're still here I see. I have plenty of fun, without some stupid electric motor on my bike. What is annoying me is your replies, most of which are utter BS. By all means go and buy an e-bike. I'll probably still be faster than you on my dirtjumper anyway.
  • 1 0
This could go one for ever. It doesn't really matter wether you like e bikes or not. Forums are all about opinion so there is no right and wrong. I just reckon there may well be a place for them. Could unlock a lot of terrain that otherwise wouldn't be ridden.
  • 4 0
Go get a freakin motorcycle. That's all it is, just a 1/4 horse motor.
  • 3 2
 P.S. I've ridden a e-bike, one word... DUMB!
  • 1 1
Thought it looks... funny (climbing like that) it takes out half of the pleasure of getting out & ride in the mountains. It also reminds me of that new sub-culture that arose among the kids these days, at least here at Greece... The simply despise pedalling! An example:
-Come on kiddo, it's only 200 meters FLAT dirtroad to the next trail entrance.
-Whooot? Am I going to PEDAL for 200 meters? You've got to be kidding...
My opinion?
I would certainly prefer it, if these bikes had (at least) a pedal activated generator that would feed the motor...
So,
This technology is surely interesting when applied on city bikes & commuters (especially cargo bikes!), but otherwise is like giving credits to these idiots who were claiming, once upon a time, that mountain bikes were just dirt bikes without the motor!
  • 2 2
Just to add on...with respect to trail access- this is the only valid argument in my eyes and I could not agree more, ......and I will not be found riding my ebike on trails that have sensitive trail access....it's about personal responsibility ...but I have always been amused how mountain bikers take over trails build and maintained by motos and start claiming them as their own....don't get me wrong I don't advocate to allow motorcycles on a bike trail....but I am trying to illustrate how we really hate to share....

I ride the OSU research forest areas and Blackrock in Oregon. My stance is not on my trail system ~ period ~ I don't want to share any space with motorized traffic in any way shape or form and I'm hopeful that the organizations in my area will have as strong of a feeling about this as I do.

If you want to go faster farther then train harder. It's a human powered activity and sweat equity is proportional to the results you get.

I sold my motorized toys after years of near misses with morons in the sand and woods running tapped and not paying attention. I don't want the same experience with a loon on an E-bike at Blackrock or anywhere else.

Go ride at Browns Camp and leave the rest to people that want to earn the downhill.

I suppose if people need this to have fun then let it happen. But I personally want no part in it nor will i choose to support anything having to do with e mountain biking.
  • 3 2
Bikes for the fat, lazy entitled generation, hope the author of this drivel has a lot of money riding on these things, cos he's gonna lose the lot.
  • 1 0
caustic, but there is some truth to what you say....... about the generation............
  • 1 0
for the price of an ebike get a dirtbike and a mountain bike, enjoy what they were both meant for and stop trying to combine them into one sport
  • 1 0
The only proper ebike I've ridden was a stealth bomber owned by a guy with a 250 KTM. His Bomber was a matching orange one. He said he rode his ebike way more cause there were more places he could ride it and it was more fun. Ebikes aren't Mountain bikes any more than they are Motor bikes they are their own thing.
  • 5 4
As an engineering student who has worked on several ev projects, e bikes seem really cool and I can see how they would help a biker.
  • 10 11
I can't wait until 10 years from now when this technology has matured. Remember elastomer suspension? Look at the superforks we ride now. Soon these motors will be no bigger than a standard hub and the batteries are just getting smaller. Imagine regenerative braking that could power you up the next hill..... This could be a way of man's most efficient machine just getting that much better. Let's see where this goes, it could be fun.

 Amen
  • 4 1
The whole " mans most efficient machine" comes from the fact that it's powered by your body, thus not needing batteries sooo.....
  • 1 0
Ya thats the point ritard. If you powered it in another way it woulnt be nearly as efficiant. It is still the most efficiant machine ever invented.
  • 4 5
Ten years ago just the thought of riding electric assisted bike would make me shudder maybe even puke in my mouth, but that was ten years ago. Now I'm getting closer to being old, and the idea doesn't look so bad. Another ten years I might have totally different view on assisted MTB.
  • 2 0
I am cool with bikes with electric pedal assist. I can't go along with bikes with electric motors..
  • 2 3
I think if we use E- Bikes as an accessible means to a trail ( ADA) for people with health issues that would need a permit to use them on nonmotorized trails, Then it's a great idea.

Meaning, allow people to use them that would not otherwise be able to enjoy the state parks that they pay taxes for.

To use them for anything else is inviting disaster:
Meaning a person with no skills, experience or common sense is now able to blast thru trails with little to no regard for anyone else on the multiuser nonmotorized trails.
  • 2 0
 wrong.

using the ada to get ebikes on non motorized 'bike' trails is just plain wrong.

walking trails.... fine.

biking and horse trails? no.
  • 2 1
I agree with stacykohut. Getting people limited by health issues on mtb trails is NOT the point. If you can't ride a bicycle properly on a mountain bike trail, you shouldn't be there.
Stacy, you agree, right? Can you think of an instance when someone was riding a vehicle that didn't conform to the traditional 2-wheeler paradigms rode your trails and you were happy about it? Probably not.
  • 3 0
electric wheelchair/off road buggy for walking trails ....sure.

using a 'disability' to gain access to mtb/non motorized use trails with an engine?
weak.

non motorized /mtb trails need to be respected, disability or not.

the probability of abuse is very high.

ever seen whos parking in 'disabled' parking spots at a walmart?

stupidity and obesity is not a disability.

and the kicker is, once the loop hole is est for engines on mtb trails...everyone will lose.
  • 1 1
this is the equivalent of jet skis & SUPs in surf breaks. It allows access to those who haven't put in the time. Now people with no trail riding experience will be able to access trails and get in over their heads. The mtn bike community needs to get out in front of this, educate trail regulators and let them know this shitstorm is coming, and advise the regulators on how to deal with it.
  • 1 0
Should lifts/shuttles be made accessible only to persons w/disabilities to keep things consistent?

At least those on e-bikes have to put out some effort by pedaling lightly, whereas those in trucks, or on lifts do nothing?
  • 4 0
Lifts and shuttles are usually on private property, so that's very different than public land.

I have seen the people who have disabilities, I am friends with some of them
The issues are very real.

As for not being allowed if you can't ride, I guess beginners are banned from your trail system?

Strava KOM's are more dangerousness to our trail access than anything else out there, IMO.
  • 3 0
@StacyKohut there are people out there with disabilities not necessarily paralysis that can ride a bike but have difficulties when it comes to getting up climbs, whether it be muscular, joint or some other impedement and they would really benefit from having an E bike which isn't a 'motor bike' in the sense that you are inferring but basically a 'turbo' for when pedaling that could help someone who wouldn't manage if they had to completely rely upon their own power much like car engines have turbos to help them create enough power. There is the probability of them being abused much like there is for anything, for example I have a disease called muscular dystrophy, some people with this condition get treated with steroids and it can make a difference to their quality of life but it still doesn't make their body as good as someone who doesn't have the disease. someone who is healthy could take steroids and use it to enhance their abilities and be able to pull off things a person not using steroids probably wouldn't manage. Does that mean we should say because steroids are abused that the people who really need them should be excluded from sports in general?
  • 2 0
It seems the general consensus going by the comments. Is that it will only be obese and noob mountain bikers that would use these. A bit short sighted in my opinion. So would some riders prefer their fellow riders to quit riding if they were struck down by illness or a disability that prevented them from riding to their old ability? Or suggest an E bike that would give them that little bit of help they need to still hit the trails?
I have Lupus(autoimmune disease), which affects my muscles (mostly legs), heart and lungs amongst all the other problems it causes. From the outside I look fine most of the time. But my days of long epic rides and pedalling up hills are gone. I've been riding mtb for 20 years and I'm not going to stop even if it means I have to go down the route of an E bike. If I could afford one, I would have one tomorrow!
  • 1 0
If your gonna bike either ride a mountain bike or get a freaking dirtbike... Like road scooters get a actual bike not some electric scooter....

  • 1 3
Eeeeeeeeeeee-Eeeeeeeeee-Eeeeeeeee. That is the gayest soundtrack to ride! this isn't a motorbike, this is no longer a mountain bike. Just as a man post-op pretending to be a woman is no longer either. I calling this slice of faggetry a TRAN-E-BIKE!
  • 2 1
If you've taken the chairlift up, e-riding allows you to ride up the mountain instead. Don't hate until you try.
  • 1 0
The difference being you don't have to bring the chairlift down with you if you know what I mean. The carbon V10 weighs in at 44-46lbs with the drive unit and the battery another 20lbs high up on your back. I'm no weight weenie but that kinda sucks.
  • 1 1
"39km backcountry route, 2 hours and 39 minutes ride time."

Fire road up, dh trail down. On an 8 inch travel rig. 20 times in one day.
  • 22 8
sure, but what about those e-tards that are gonna ride up the dh trail as your coming down?

are they harmless after YOUR massive head injury?

will they be there for you at the hospital?
will they pay your bills?

will they repair the damage from riding up a trail with an engine?
will they repair the trail from riding down hill with an engine?

e bikes belong in motorized vehicle use areas.
go to the mx track, ride in an approved motorized off road vehicle area.............

sure you may not behave this way, you use the fire road...cool.

but not everyone will act like you.

no electric motorized vehicles on any and all bike trails and bike parks. no engines . no exceptions ....disabilites included.
  • 6 9
That just reads like alarmist nonsense. Why would they decide to go up a downhill run rather than up the trail/road others are taking uphill?

  • 2 1
 okay.
  • 1 0
Stacy , are you saying I should have not have bought one of the r-ones that you sold me??
  • 2 2
 of course not.

your a prime example of someone that 'gets it'.

you have an electric power bike/vehicle and you ride it in areas that have no conflict with mtb trails or mtb parks.
you ride in areas where others who pedal , for the most part don't ride.

you also use it for some urban commuting right? bmx tracks? city parks? backcountry? correct?

you my friend are a shining example, as i said, of someone who 'gets it'.

i have no problem with bike/vehicles with engines.........

but they need to be ridden in the proper areas where consideration is given to the intended use of the trails.

i have alot of respect for what and how you ride. but i have even more respect for you because of the fact in the past 6 or 7 years there has never been a situation were there was trail conflict.
you use your head and 'get it'.

but not everyone is gonna be as smart as you slayer74!!!!
  • 1 0
and for the record,r-one sold you a gravity ride, you converted it, and we said"wow, congrats.go for it"

you said you were not interested in trail conflict. you kept your word.

cool.
  • 2 0
ha ha, cool, i ride where i can, when i can and still have fun, even though of all the PB hatred. puff
  • 1 0
If anyone is gonna put me in hospital then its gonna be me damn it! I have spent a long time not praticing common sense and riding with hangovers to earn the privilidge of being the only person I can blame when I nose dive a 30 gap jump! Please do not physically threaten me with E-tards riding towards me. Anyway, if you get 50 points for brapping a hiker off the trail, then how many do you get for blind siding someone on an E-bike?
  • 8 7
if i ever see one of these out in my area, that guy is leaving with a busted face...
  • 3 1
I second that! And try to ride one at the motocross track, they will just laugh at you...
  • 2 0
HAHAHA. Sure. I could care less about e-bikes, but I bet if you saw one out on the trail you'd tuck your tail between your legs and then rant about it on pinkbike. Internet tough guys like you are the biggest p**sies.

  • 6 0
because an electric motorcycle is a motorcycle and it wont be allowed on multi-use and bicycle trails. this thing is just a sneaky way of riding a "motorcycle" where you shouldnt be.

  • 4 2
I dont get why even the dhers are hating on this.
  • 2 1
Cos we don't want some obese guys who have never ridden before tearing down the local spot or open trail at race speed and giving themselves a head injury (also, the noise is really, really, annoying...)
  • 2 2
I'll give you that about the noise. But why are you instantly connecting inexperience with pedal assist? Pedal assist on a high end dh bike represents a huge monetary commitment on reserved for some one passionate about riding
  • 1 1
All the gear and no idea, all the kit and full of shit, everyone knows *that guy* who sees dh once so goes and buys a spesh demo...
  • 3 0
But he's having fun, and we all start out as noobs somewhere. I don't think dh is a first bike choice, it's more a discipline you move into from other biking I think. Plus if he's really shit the novelty will soon wear off and someone will get a good secondhand deal.
  • 2 1
Its got motor strapped to it!!! Its a MOTOR cycle! It is not a bicycle. It has no place on this site or at any "Bicycle show, event, trail, news!!!!

Wow r you guys kidding me! First off I've been free riding longer than most of you guys have been on planet earth and the rest where still in diapers. I've seen the ney sayers of disc brakes, they r way to heavy, this is back in the day when v-brakes and ceramic coated rims where the bomb and titanium spokes where all the rage. Now u can't find a bike without them on the trails.
All I'm getting at is it would sure be great to ride your V=10 up to the trail head rather than shuttle, No noise it's electric!!!! Or u could put ur baseball cards in the spokes If u need a distrating. Embrace change it's coming whether u like it or not.
