Press Release: Forbidden

Stick to the race line, or carve your own on the DREADNOUGHT GX LTD Team Edition. This team replica build features a shred-ready spec, tested and approved by the Forbidden Synthesis Factory team. With a limited number of units available, and all of them assembled at our Cumberland headquarters, these bikes will be as exclusive as the ones found under our factory pilots. These bikes feature a SRAM GX 12-speed drivetrain, Code R brakes, RockShox Zeb and Super Deluxe Ultimate dampers, Crankbrothers Synthesis wheels (available in either a full 29 or mixed wheel configuration), and rider’s choice of Maxxis tire casings and frame colour. Each bike is outfitted with a size-specific handlebar rise, taking our industry-leading One Ride Philosophy to the next level. The only thing the Dreadnought GX - LTD Team Edition needs is a steady diet of rough and rowdy terrain.

bit of a dick move putting your team riders on code r's
  • 13 1
Came here to make this exact comment.
  • 12 1
lol, beat me to it. and I'm not a SRAM hater. How much are they saving by skimping and not going Code RSC?
  • 40 0
Its the Race edition... brakes only slow you down.
  • 7 3
Is the general opinion that Code Rs are not good brakes, or just that the "team" should have the fanciest available? They are currently on mega discount on CRC and I'm considering a set for the hardtail.
  • 20 0
Also, no one buy them while I'm still considering them
  • 3 0
those code Rs won't stop them from being cheap
  • 2 1
 Poor brakes, faster times. Wink
  • 9 1
 ...and GX for team riders??
  • 3 0
@codfather1234: Had them on a bike from a bike and they were great. Next bike had RSC's which were a little better but not a lot. Upgrade to a bigger rotor up front 220 and better pads and you'll be all set.

On another note, I went from RSC's to Magura MT5's with the HC lever, big rotors and upgraded pads... insane power and cheap!
  • 10 10
@codfather1234: I think the consensus is that SRAM sucks, but I'm just throwing that out there Wink
  • 8 0
@islandforlife: @sanchofula: This seems to sort of confirm what I thought. Seems there are plenty of reviews saying new Codes are great, but then a vocal minority of "sRaM sUcKs" crowd (of which I used to be part). MT5s are good but I really hate their plastic-y two finger levers and I'm not prepared to buy brakes that I known need an instant upgrade.
Code Rs are currently £55 an end so seems worth a punt over 2 piston XT M8000.
  • 3 0
@Chippps: I thought this too, not even AXS either.

Pretty average spec for a ‘team’ spec build.
  • 9 0
@codfather1234: Code Rs aren't bad, but swinglink (the S) in RSC makes the lever feel much smoother and less mushy.

I wouldn't kick Code Rs out of bed, but on a, $8k "ltd team edition" bike, the $50 they saved in speccing Code Rs over RSCs seems pretty silly.
  • 8 0
 @TheRamma: Mush is modulation Wink
  • 2 0
@codfather1234: You can buy MT5's with the one finger HC levers.
  • 2 1
I find it crasy the price difference between R's and RSC codes. I have RSC codes but I would have gone for RS codes if they existed. Love my brakes but they are too expensive, I did see Josh B on the R's recently and was surprised. SRAM make some Code RS's please
  • 2 2
@Tristanssid: the easiest solution is to just throw a pair of Deore XT’s on, i ran code RSC’s on my Rallon for 7/8 months and just couldn’t get in with them, they’re very average compared to the shimano equivalent spec.
  • 4 2
@kev-jones: buying XTs is only a solution if you want a less reliable, less serviceable brake with fewer features than Code RSCs.

it's fine to prefer the feel of Shimano (at which point TRP is still a better option), but their brake game is really off with all this wandering bite point, disposable brake nonsense. with RSCs on deep discount now, they're the better value proposition.
  • 4 1
@codfather1234: I went from SLX to Code R and having a consistent bite point is nice!
  • 5 3
I bet a set of code R's maintained by an EWS Mechanic is better than whatever you're running on your bike.
  • 2 0
@Chippps: GX just works. I'd imagine that none of these riders actually care what level of components are on the bike as long as they're tough and get the job done.
  • 2 1
@codfather1234: Like anything if you are good at bleeding/maintaining it, it will get the job done. I think the main beef was that a $7K "team" bike came with the lowest spec brake. I have code RSs and Code RSCs and Shimano XT brakes. Personally I just find the effort to stop with Shimano brakes to be so minimal. I can barely feather the lever and get a good braking response. With the codes I find the pull is firmer and requires more force to stop. Personally I think modulation is what your finger does, not what the lever does....which is why I prefer Shimano. I had some really cheap Shimano 4 piston brakes on a DH bike and they were so exceptionally powerful despite how cheesy the levers were. And that pretty much sums up my experience with the two brakes.

Why is this called the ''LTD Team Edition'' when it's not the same spec as the team bikes ?

flag pargolf8 (Dec 21, 2022 at 5:56) (Below Threshold)
The same reason actual “team” members dont pay for their whips???
  • 99 1
It doesn't refer to their race team, but to their marketing team, who came up with this hilarious spec and price tag
  • 4 1
 Maybe moimoi is coming soon?
  • 9 0
Just like Subway's Foot Long sub is a name, not a length of their sandwich.
  • 12 1
Don't worry, it is also not the same colour as the team bikes.
  • 4 0
Totally. Should it be a Crankbros post? What does One Up have to do with the team?
  • 2 0
maybe stock of spare parts was limited Smile
  • 1 1
 @pargolf8: Downvoted for whips.
  • 2 1
@RoboDuck: you can choose blue heat on the build page…

@slovenian6474: what the f... , So many lunches just turned into a pile of of undersized lies!
  • 1 0
 @DBone95: steeds?
  • 2 0
@subwaypanda: That's how they got out of a lawsuit because the subs have always been under 12" long.
  • 1 0
 LTD Is "limited" so maybe they are saying these bikes are limited from being true team editions (;
  • 48 2
Excuse me, but 7,6k for what? Gx, RS, Code R and 1up. That's a shame.
  • 76 4
You complain now but next year it will be 8.7k for what? Nx, tektro, 0up and still people on here will be like 'but but the technology though makes it better than a bike in my childhood
  • 20 0
 @browner: 0up hahaha
  • 3 0
@browner: 0up got me. Nice one, hahaha.
  • 2 2
@browner: well said, unfortunately... without mentionning the Taiwan/China crisis which is about to happen... in a near future (...) meaning that bike industry is living on a fragile cloud right now.
Wise advice: get everything you need before the storm, 'cos Covid was nothing compared to what's gonna soon happen.
  • 1 0
 Comes with Stans sealant though.
  • 3 0
Seems it should be $5,500 US and called the sensible edition.
  • 1 0
@browner: Spot on. Almost not even a joke.
  • 36 0
I’d love to try this with the ziggy mullet setup, ….unfortunately all $7000 bikes are called Forbidden in our house..
  • 3 0
 Well played sir!
  • 1 0
 Hope its worth it!
  • 18 1
While this bike is beautiful, I find it somewhat hard to believe that the EWS team was on Code R and not the RSC....also, you can see an oil slick XX1 cassette on one of the riders bikes and what looks to be X01 derailleur on the other....
  • 8 0
It is for when you do bad at race you get code r brakes so next race you do gut cause you cant stop
  • 17 2
So Burgtec is basically OEM takeoff level stuff now? This, Yeti, Santa Cruz… they put on Burgtec out the box so I’m assuming it’s just the brand name now and not whatever it was that made it desirable in the past?

GX is basically minimum viable drivetrain at this point and it’s sad you have to spend six grand to get it.
  • 15 1
$7000. Plus you get code R brakes and Crank Brothers alloy wheels. Screamin’ deal.

flag captaintyingknots (Dec 21, 2022 at 6:20) (Below Threshold)
Oh, please. NX isn't great, but it's completely viable. It's not like it won't work on the trail.
  • 10 1
No, instead of getting an OEM level cockpit which most people remove, you're getting quality Burgtec components which people buy as aftermarket parts - the only difference being that the handlebar logos are black/white rather than yelllow/white. I assume they have done this solely to match the colours of the range of bikes that they're being put on. In my eyes, a great move from Burgtec, and any brands who decide to use their parts too
  • 8 0
@calcrossland26: that is not true. Burgtec components found on these builds are different. For example, most people don't know but the Mk4 stem that comes on Santa Cruz bikes is NOT the same stem you buy aftermarket. The aftermarket version is machine SC version is cast.
  • 10 2
@captaintyingknots: NX derailleur literally twist themselves out of spec during hard shifts. I work on 150 demo bikes with NX specd on them, can’t tell you how many spares I go through. What worse? They spec the same stamped steel cage from NX and SX on GX AXS even.
  • 4 0
For that price, it should at least be GX AXS.
  • 1 0
 *machined
  • 3 3
@pipomax: thank you for confirming my suspicions and from what I can see googling you are 100% right.

NX is garbage and not suitable for any kind of real riding.
  • 2 3
@5afety3rd: I'd argue that demo bikes get beat on waaaay harder than a regular rider's bike: people sending it way too hard, clueless beginers shifting terribly and crashing often,... Maybe NX isn't the right tool there, but a normal, competent rider probably isn't going to have many issues with NX that GX would have saved them from.
  • 2 0
@captaintyingknots: you forgetting that literally daily maintenance demo bikes get that average joe does maybe once a season.
  • 2 0
@wibblywobbly: do yourself a favor, and don't Google Deore derailleurs then. Lots of problems there, too.

Drivetrains and brakes are components where complaints often show you more about the rider's skill and mechanical abilities than anything else. NX is fine. There are better options, but if you know how to set it up, take care of it, and shift, it will run for a reasonably long time.
  • 1 0
@stevemokan: the Megatower S is $200 less and comes with Code Rs and definitively worse suspension and an overall weaker spec. Skipping the direct brands, what else are you comparing it to that makes this seem offside?
  • 18 0
There is no "I" in team and there is also no GX or Code R or air shock in team either..
  • 13 1
Nice bike, but why does it comes brakeless?
  • 10 0
Sweet! Is the Pro team really running Code R brakes?

Rad bike though.
  • 7 0
They had left over parts and decided to throw together a couple of builds? Marketing, price and build all seems highly questionable.
  • 3 0
"Team Edition" to me always draws to high end components, being the bike that the team would actually ride.

Not even the guys in the photos are riding the build they're advertising. This is weird marketing.
  • 6 0
 semi team edition

Good luck to the riders with those Code R brakes. Only just got shit of mine after a year of terrible experience running them. Probably the 2nd worst brakes I've used next to Juicys.
