Florida Man Bitten By Alligator After Falling Off Trail

Jul 20, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

A mountain biker in Florida has been bitten by an alligator after falling off his bike on a trail, WPTV reports.

The unidentified man was riding at Halpatiokee Regional Park at around 11am on Monday. He fell off a wooden bridge and down a six foot embankment into a small body of water where he was bitten by the reptile on the leg.

Charlie Shannon was walking his dog nearby and was able to lift the biker out with the help of another man. He then used his dog lead as a tourniquet until help arrived. He said, "He had a lot of marks all over his leg, but mainly in the upper thigh. He was hanging on roots like five feet below, it was hard to get him out."

The 8 foot, 170-pound alligator was later caught by a trapper, John Davidson, who will take it to a nearby farm. He said, "She was sitting 10 feet off the bank when I showed up. That leads me to believe that she was a female and sitting on a nest somewhere close. So we'll attempt to rescue the babies if we can." This gator was the third he had picked up on Monday and he explained they are extra aggressive around this time of year. However, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told WPTV that serious injuries caused by alligators are rare and if anyone encounters a nuisance gator, they should call 866-FWC-GATOR.

The man was airlifted to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute and is said to have serious injuries. We wish him the best in his recovery and hope he is back on the bike soon.

Disappointed. You can do better than that Florida Man.

Florida Man being bitten by an alligator is just called Tuesday. Where's the meth, high speed car chase, mariachi band? I'm assuming he wasn't even naked.

Meh.

With the exception of the upvotes
It seems your the only one
That WOULD’NT Move to Florida
What we have here
Is , failure to.. communicate
Kinda like the PB paywalll migration to Vital we saw here last week
Some folks just dont get it
(acoustic guitar sound w/whistling)
Look at the bikes you’re killin
Look at the crud your spillin
(if your gonna spill blood it may as well be Slayer)
We dont need your stupid paywall
It feeds the rich but it buries the poawooooor (true Axl Rose grammer version)
No but really there’s enough people here
And PAYWALLS
Plus its flater than an Outside magazine

Unless this story ends with the gator wearing a leash and jogging alongside dude as he rode home then he really doesn't deserve the title of Florida man.
  • 1 0
That would be SC man. (See Charles Fraser of Hilton Head)
  • 16 0
Wait, does this mean people have crashed their bikes in FL and then *not* been eaten by an alligator? I feel I've been misled.
  • 8 0
Sometimes, they're lying on the trails. Helps promote better bunny hopping technique.
  • 16 0
This may have been avoided if Continental had done some PR work with the Gator community regarding their Gatorskin tire armor not using actual gator skin.

I'm from florida and i have actually hit blind jump and landed right on top of a 5" gator lol lucky i crashed away from him. he was hissing so mad. i had algae all over my bike from him. if i would of been a better jumper i would of cleared him lol. never been so scared
  • 31 0

Florida mountain biker here…. If it isn’t an gator that gets you it would be a venomous snake, the freaking heat, lightning, or meth head.

No denying Florida MTB is still spectacular though.
  • 1 0
But most likely it'll be the bugs.
  • 1 0
I quite seriously hit a bear about two weeks ago...I have video....I do think that we have far less meth heads than IL, WI and MN.....
  • 4 0
I’ve rode in Florida before( really fun trails btw!) and the whole time I was just thinking about falling off trail into water and this exact thing happening!
  • 3 0
The guy was 74 yrs old. Pretty seriously injured. I ride that trail pretty often and it’s not really a skinny, but more like a bridge. Pretty hard to fall off, but don’t we say that about most of our crashes.
  • 5 0
Just waiting on the armor companies to come out with "gator armor"
  • 6 0
 Afterawhile crocodile
  • 1 0
Now they have closed that entire trail system, not just the little part by the water. But still open to hikers. How stupid can authorities get. The injured party is not complaining about the trail condition causing him to crash.
  • 3 0
Desert... Good. Swamp... Bad. Thanks, but I'll stick to Western Diamondbacks!
  • 3 0
That area is the crocodile's domain - it'll all be underwater in 20 years anyway.
  • 1 0
Gretta Thunburg gives the west coast seven or so (left). I hope it takes less time.
  • 1 0
no, if it was a "croc's" domain, the guy would be missing... and very much dead.

"Salty's" will have a go at anything that gets close.. they are aggressive and when they get up to 4-6m long.. not a poultry 8ft, there isnt much that they cant take down.
  • 3 0

You aint from round er’ is ya boy

All puns aside I can verify at least 1 alligator at Balm Boyette in lithia fl. with a 27.5 DHR skid mark across his ass, its an old phosphate mine littered w/paywalls Facepalm . I mean ponds , if your hauling ass Ninja they’ll cross right in front of you, you really dont have much option sometimes they like to sit in the sun along the trails and they take off when u come flying through.
Thanks for listening
