First Ride: 2022 Specialized Kenevo SL - The Electric Enduro

May 13, 2021
by Mike Kazimer

Last year Specialized released the Levo SL, an electrified version of the Stumpjumper that weighed 38 pounds, making it one of the lightest eMTBs available at the time. The new Kenevo SL is the follow-up act, which takes the popular Enduro chassis and integrates a motor and a 320 Wh battery. The result is an eMTB with 29” wheels and 170mm of travel that tips the scales at only 40.9 pounds. For reference, that's about eight pounds more than a 'regular' Enduro, and 11 pounds less than the full powered Kenevo.

There are just two models in the lineup, the S-Works version shown here that goes for $15,000 USD, and the Expert model that's priced at $11,000 USD. Nobody said that owning futuristic toys was going to be cheap.

Frame Details

From a distance the Kenevo SL's silhouette looks almost identical to the current Enduro – the smaller motor and battery keep the carbon frame from getting the bloated look some eMTBs have. There's plenty of room for holding a full-size water bottle inside the front triangle, or that bottle cage can be used to hold the 160 Wh range extender battery that's included with the S-Works model, which boosts the amount of possible ride time up to a claimed 7 hours.

Like the recently released Levo, the Kenevo SL has a display located on the top tube that can be customized to display information like speed, battery life, elevation, and more. It works in conjunction with Specialized's Mission Control app, and can be updated via Bluetooth, allowing for more features to be added a time goes on.

The 160 Wh range extender battery sits in the bottle cage.

The charging port is located underneath a latch on the non-drive side.

The modes (Eco, Trail, Turbo, and Walk) are selected via the controller mounted on the left side of the handlebar. There's also a Microtune option that can be assessed by holding down the top mode selector button for a few seconds. Once in that mode is accessed, the amount of power can be adjusted in 10% increments. That can be useful for matching the power of a bike to that of another rider's, or for riding with an amount of power that falls in between Eco and Trail or Trail and Turbo.

Geometry

Specialized also gave the new Kenevo the adjustable geometry first seen on the Stumpjumper EVO, which in this case allows for a total of six distinct geometry settings. Four of the possible settings are shown above, and Specialized have a geo finder tool on their site that makes it easy to see all the possibilities. In the slackest position, the bike has a DH bike-worthy 62.5-degree head angle, and in the steepest that bumps up to 64.5-degrees. Those geometry changes are accomplished by swapping out the upper head set cup, and by changing the position of the flip chip on the chainstays. That chainstay flip chip also alters the amount of bottom bracket drop by 6 millimeters, and the chainstay length by 5 millimeters.

The seat tube angle also changes depending on the geometry setting, but it doesn't stray too far from 76-degrees. There are a total of four sizes, with reach numbers ranging from 437mm for the S2 all the way up to 512mm on the size S5. All of the sizes have relatively short seat tubes in order to make it easier for riders to size up or down depending on their handling preferences.

Suspension Design

The Kenevo retains the six bar suspension design found on the Enduro. The leverage curve is progressive, flattening out slightly at the end of the stroke in order to ensure that all of the travel can be accessed when necessary. According to Specialized, the Fox Float X2 has a tune that was developed specifically for the Kenevo SL, in order to ensure that its performance would pair well with how the bike is intended to be ridden.

Ride Impressions

The Kenevo SL is an interesting bike, one that had me scratching my head one moment, and trying to wipe the goofy grin off my face so I didn't swallow any bugs the next. The head scratching came from trying to figure out exactly who the Kenevo SL is for, and the smiles were from forgetting about that and enjoying the effortless speed that's possible on the descents.

The Kenevo SL's level of assistance on the climbs isn't going to blow your hair back – remember, it basically doubles your power, rather than quadrupling it like the Levo does. The delivery is very smooth, though, and it does make it a whole lot easier to get to the top of a stout climb. I'm still not a fan of the extra noise that comes from the gear driven motor – it's much louder than the Levo's belt driven motor. The Kenevo SL may look a lot like a normal bike, but the sound of the motor is going to be a dead giveaway that it isn't when approaching another rider or hiker. I should mention that I'm a little more sensitive to noise than others; I'm sure many riders won't give those few extra decibels a second thought.

When gravity takes over the Kenevo SL is outstanding, exhibiting incredible composure while remaining much more maneuverable than a full-power eMTB. That 10ish pound weight difference between the Kenevo SL and a bike like the Levo or Santa Cruz Bullit is very noticeable, and makes it much easier to get off the ground, and to make quick direction changes. I've mainly been riding it in the slack / high setting, which gives it a 63.2-degree head tube angle and 442mm chainstays, numbers that feel ideal for the steep, loose trails I've been favoring lately.

With heavier eMTBs I'll occasionally run into moments where it takes extra effort to stay in control, sort of like driving an overloaded van down a twisty road. That's not the case with the Kenevo SL – its weight gives it more stability, especially in high speed rough sections, or when really pushing into a turn compared to a non-motorized bike, while also requiring much less upper body exertion compared to a full-powered eMTB.

Specialized Kenevo SL

Now, onto the head scratching that I mentioned earlier. If you purchased a Kenevo SL and went out for a ride with friends who had full-powered eMTBs you'd need to work really, really hard to keep up, and there's a good chance that the 320 Wh battery would run out before theirs did. That could potentially be a tough pill to swallow, unless all of your buddies were also on Kenevo SLs.

The flip side is that the experience of riding the Kenevo SL is much closer to that of a regular bike, which I'm sure plenty of riders will appreciate. I'm a little torn, though, since I really like the uphill and traversing speed that's possible on a full power eMTB like the Levo. That bike makes it possible to get up ridiculous climbs, or to knock out a bunch of laps in a relatively short amount of time, while the Kenevo SL doesn't have the same level of assistance to really encourage a different riding style.

Will there be a time when you'll be able to get a 40-pound eMTB that has all the power and torque of today's full-powered machines? I don't doubt it, but until then there are concessions that need to be made in order to achieve the lighter weight of a bike like the Kenevo SL. The good news is that those concessions don't limit the Kenevo SL's descending prowess, and at the end of the day that's the best part of the ride.

The Kenevo is an intriguing bike, and it's earned a spot in the eMTB Field Test that'll be taking place later this summer, where it'll be going head-to-head against several other new electric machines.

@alpha-bio: seriously. I can relate to the idea that high-end bikes are unattainable because I've been riding for decades and started buying low end like every kid, then used, then trading up, over and over for years. but what a lot of people who complain about "dentist" bikes don't realize is that, if you've stuck with riding, and your job, for a long time and you've got a roof over your head and the bills paid, why the f*ck wouldn't you pay for top of the line products related to your passion with the extra cash you have? I'm not saying spend for spending's sake, but if it's a really good product, it leads to your stoke, and you're set bill-wise because you've put in some time... pull the trigger.

@ranke: just because motorcycles have engines, 62000 parts, will go 150mph and will last 100,000 miles and twenty years with regular oil changes. $11,000 for a bicycle with a battery and motor that will need to be replaced at huge cost in 2-3 years is ridiculous. It’s an absolute joke. Quite why anyone would buy one at the prices Spesh is asking does not compute. I mean, I get why someone who already has everything he wants would get one... but for normal mountain bikers it’s a hard sell. I would be open to spending $5k on one of it had an engine that was going to last years and years, but everyone knows these Brose motors do not last, nor do the $800 batteries.

@jaame: Add to it that it is "Made in Taiwan" using cheap labor. I mean for $15,000 I would expect it to be handmade by Dwarves in the forges of Erebor.

  • 19 3
@carters75: made in Taiwan is better than made anywhere else, but yeah the wages there are a bit lower than western countries. At least Spesh is sticking with Taiwan, I respect them for that. They could have gone for lower production costs and lower quality like a lot of companies have done. They’re still extortionately priced though.
  • 2 3
@alpha-bio: i mean if you say so
  • 11 0
@jaame: i hear you. it is a hard sell. i wouldn't buy one at these inflated prices either. but i've been a normal mountain biker for 30 years and i ride an 8k kenevo expert when i'm riding e, and i'm a teacher. started on a low end gt karkoram in the 90's though, paid for with a deli job and bought plenty of used rigs on my way to where i'm at. i spend my extra money on bikes. and since i've ridden a lot of other ebikes and i'm convinced you can't beat a kenevo (opinion, i know) i'll go back in for the same rig when the prices come down or get a commencal, since they make baddass rigs too with great specs at a good price point. as far as the motor, it lasted a year and a half before it went, and i got it warrantied in one day for free. small price to pay for the quietest, smoothest motor out there on a bike with absolutely dialed geo and spec. i'm guessing that these bloated covid prices will come down though. but again, i hear u. the prices on top of the line rigs are ridiculous right now.

  • 44 5
@Riwajc: I feel like you misread his comment. He said it was made with cheap (meaning less expensive) labor, thus criticizing the cost of the bike, not its quality. He never said it was crap because it was made in Asia. However it is known that it is cheaper to manufacture in Asia than North America, Europe, etc, which makes the cost of this bike even more ridiculous.

Take a breath next time.

@TypicalCanadian: Obviously you are not familiar with Taiwan's economy as well. There are a bunch
of countries in Europe and all over the world with lower GDP than Taiwan which can produce cheap. Taiwan is a high end production country for bikes not a cheap labor country. One should be happy if the sticker says "Made in Taiwan" and expect this to be expensive unless you are Giant and you own the factory!

@bonfire: You literally argue against him and yourself in that comment which is quite the achievement.
  • 10 1
@jaame: wouldn’t a better comparison for this level of mtb be the same level of motorcycle which would cost about 30k upwards?

Your 11k motorcycle is equivalent to your 3.5k bike - good enough for 90% of people but some want and can afford more and some actually ride to a level they need more.

I don’t understand the motorcycle v push bike argument in honesty, with economies of scale, weight/performance ratio, available performance etc all factored in the only connection is they have two wheels.
  • 3 0
 @alpha-bio: U r spot on!
  • 39 3
@bonfire: the reason people buy hope, in my opinion, is mostly because they make quality products in house that last. The prices are reasonable. If you want to buy a hub, for example, you have a choice of Shimano or something like Novatec which are well priced, then you have hope one step up the ladder, then you have several other manufacturers several steps further up the ladder cost-wise. Novatec freewheels don’t last. Shimano hubs have cup and cone bearings that most people don’t like. A lot of the newer hubs with 658 points of engagement also don’t last. The teeth are tiny, they sound nice, but they don’t last.
With hope, they literally design and manufacture everything themselves. The designs are solid engineering from people who used to work on jet engines at Rolls Royce. They sell every spare part for every product they have ever made, for reasonable prices and if they haven’t got it, they will make it. And if you do need an end cap from a hub you bought in 1997 they will charge you £8 for it, not £49.99. There are so many reasons to like Hope. Made in the uk is just the icing on the cake for uk based buyers who like the idea of supporting their local economy.
In my opinion, a design brand designing stuff and having it made at the cheapest external vendor in order to maximise profit, and then discontinuing that line after two years leaving owners up shit creek if anything breaks, is a lot worse.
People supporting Hope is not racist... but there is veiled racism around. Just not in this case.
Made in Taiwan is often better than made anywhere else though. The taiwanese have the metal expertise and they facilities that are not available anywhere else, such as hydro forming machines and those ones that can make tapered tubes. Taiwan is awesome!

@justanotherusername: this is where you are wrong. An out the door 11k$ usd ktm/husky is the exact same bike top enduro riders use. They are not on these $30k dirtbikes everyone on pinkbike think exist. They are on almost bone stock machines.

One of the big reasons I switched to moto, the mtb prices are completely outrageous, and you don't even get a fraction of the bike that you do with a late model Enduro dirt bike.
  • 1 0
@Squeakybb: Fair enough if true, I know nothing at all about enduro racing.

Track bikes (circuit, tarmac) though - well they aren’t even racing and a half decent build once suspension, brakes, drivetrain, controls etc are up to scratch is easily 25k - no work at all to engine, race bikes more.

Suspension internals in standard bikes suck, controls suck etc etc but this isn’t the case for current mtb’s - I assumed MX was the same and that if racing out comes much of the stock gear.

Danny Hart said in a recent interview how they used to get black box gear a few years before it hit public sale, as he says now they all ride stuff that’s literally out of the box it’s so good - I believe an interview with someone from KTM said the same.

But if I’m wrong about the enduro racers managing to race on stock bikes, good stuff, but I would still argue the top end MTB stuff is produced to a higher standard and much lower quantities of manufacture, so the problem remains.

Specialized knows that people will pay it. You're paying for the name. I bought an Enduro s works for half price. Retail was 10'500. I absolutely do not believe it's worth the MSRP. Not a chance. Even at half price I consider it to be just fair. You're definitely paying for the name with specialized.

@Maestroman87, remember, the motor is smaller too, so the battery lasts longer than it would on a full-powered e-mtb - definitely much longer than an hour.

@mikekazimer: and also there is a range extender.
  • 9 2
@mikekazimer: for sure, if it's anything like the levo sl, the battery life can be longer than the full fat model. My Levo sl can go 35 miles of mixed riding, all on trail with no issues
  • 2 0
@mikekazimer:Fair enough. I was thinking of what my peak power output would be for an hour and I guess 350W is on the high side, probably more like 250W. Since the motor doubles the output, and the terrain could accomodate that pace, it would last 1.4 hours. More realistically though, you'd probably just work less, and putting out 250W total (as an example) giving you ~2.8 hours of climb time.
  • 5 1
@MRwillP: The battery can be half the size when the motor has half the draw. Same range and a regular kenevo
  • 10 1
My S4 size Status weighs 36 pounds with a bottle cage and flat pedals. Throw a bottle in there and a dual ply tire set and I’m right over that 40 pound mark.

Then again, you could buy 5 of my bike and still have enough left over for a nice road bike/BMX/DJ/Macbook for the price of the S-Works.

The difference is, when you analog enduro bike weighs 36-38 lbs, you know you can chuck it off serious stuff like a freeride bike, especially if you have components like Fox 38/Zeb on there.

With this thing, I would hesitate doing big stuff. There is no way the construction is as bombproof at that weight.
  • 5 1
When did it get acceptable for bikes to get heavy? my 2008 giant glory DH bike weighed 40lb.... And that was considered heavy at at the time but I was a student and it was all I could afford. 30lb used to be considered the magic number... Over is too heavy under is light enough for usability.... Ok I'll give e bikes their tolerance as that motor does help but still top end enduro bikes are well over 30 lb these days and they are not cheap builds!!
  • 1 0
@netracer-enduro: I struggled to come to terms with this as well. I have justified the weight increase as a function of bikes simply being bigger, longer reach etc.... and wheel size increase and tire weight. I recall my 2012 Scott Genius LT weighing around 30lbs with 180/185mm rear travel. However...... my current 37-38 pound bike climbs and descends better because of geometry I guess. I can't think of any other valid reason...I'm fatter, so it's not that.

In reality it's slow on the climbs if you are used to climbing in turbo mode on a real e bike. It's not really a long travel bike for real DH. You aren't gonna get many laps considering the smaller battery and the slower speed. It's compromised in nearly every respect compared to a regular Kenevo with a 700 battery, except in the weight category.

Imagine paying $15,000 for this wEak bike and getting your doors blown off on a climb by a 2 year old 50 pound 190/200 travel double crown Kenevo in turbo mode, which only cost about 1/3 of the price.

@TDMAN: To each their own. In my opinion, once you cross a certain level of income threshold and are maxing out your retirement accounts, have a healthy diversion to traditional investments, and are in a overall healthy fiscal place (i.e. no debt, not house poor), you have every right to spend your money on what you want. For some, that's a Ferrari or a Porsche. For others it's an ebike that some might say is too expensive.
  • 9 8
 @fullendurbro: I think you're forgetting that $14k is $14k, regardless of whether I'm making $300,000 a year or you're making $50,000 a year.

Just because it's a smaller percentage of my income than yours doesn't mean I'm going to freely shell out that amount of money for an E-bike. Not when there are much better items out there for the same price. It's all prestige pricing at this point, you're not actually paying for R&D and materials. If it were actually that expensive, motorcycles would be triple the cost that they are.
  • 5 0
@fullendurbro: I guess, but I am not poor and am doing those things you are speaking of (maxing out my 401k, own a house, healthy diversion to investments) and there is no way I'd spend this much on a bike. The thing you are missing is that this is not the only bike out there and you can get something that performs almost as well for way cheaper. Plus, lots of people who make money are also slow to part with it. For every dude that starts making money and goes out and spends $150k on a Porsche, there are five behind him just saving and investing. Maybe one day I could justify this, but honestly, I still think I'd go with something cheaper.

FWIW, and I've ridden all of the eBikes from Speshy over the last few years save these newest ones, the one I'd get would be the Levo Pro (actually something less fancy like an Expert or Comp model when they arrive later this year would be more my thing). I don't see the point of the Kenevo SL as the experience is too close to just riding an Enduro +8 lbs. If I want more of acoustic bike feel then that is what I'll ride. However, when the time comes for me to purchase an eBike, I'd want something that delivers a different experience.

If this thing matches the Enduro on the way down (and the reviews say it does) why the f-ck would I not get one and add another lap or two to every 2hr ride? If those extra laps mean enough to you (and you can scrape together the cash) then it makes all the sense in the world.

The tech is impressive but remember when people said E bikes should be used as tools (For disabled/older riders, trail building, search and rescue?)... This new type of e-duro bike seems fun but obviously not marketed as a tool. Say what you want but I think this particular category of bike poses a huge problem for the integrity of the sport at large, and it's worrisome for places still grappling with trail access issues.
  • 43 25
It is a tool. A tool for TOOLS.
  • 38 5
Sorry to break it to you, but people who want mountain bikers off the trails don't care whether said bike has an electric motor. The only people who differentiate between pedal bikes and e bikes are bike riders. The Sierra Club cohort's arguments against e bikes are literally the same talking points leveraged against pedal bikes. Too fast, interrupts other trail users, erosion, unnatural, disturbs wildlife, scares horses, etc. Making concessions to those individuals does nothing positive for trail access, it only lends credence to their underlying assumption, which is that bikes on trails are a problem to be mitigated. Based off what I've been seeing in Utah and elsewhere, e bikes are just another way that people enjoy their local multi-use trail networks, and the VAST majority of e-riders are responsible, friendly folks with whom I'm happy to share the trail.

Oh, I don’t disagree. I’m only stating the lengths that people will go. It’s happened in Aliso/Laguna after a fire a couple years ago. This was a bit of a different situation, but the story is that the home insurance companies around the area got word that the fire could’ve been caused by an electric bike (not sure of the actual cause). Then there was obvious pressure from the locals to ban ALL motorized vehicles. Soon after, we see signs saying “no e-bikes”.

Now are they enforcing it? That’s a different conversation. It sure doesn’t seem like they are as of now. But that may change soon due to new programs being tested...

More than 1500, but you make a good point!
  • 4 1
@noplacelikeloam: Well a Bafang M620 and 750wh battery is around $1.5k all in, so not really. That has a lot more power and stuff going on than that Brose motor ever would.
  • 3 0
@GilesSTurner: It's also heavier and probably a lot less sophisticated in how smoothly it delivers that power).
  • 3 0
@GilesSTurner: uh, first: this isn't a Brose motor, and second... Ah, why even bother?
  • 31 5
I'm very sorry, I don't usually rant about stuff like that, but it's a statement that even Santa Cruz and Yeti offer better value at this point. $11 000 for non-factory suspension is, imo, unacceptable.
  • 7 0
Yup you gotta pay 4 GRAND more if you want factory lmao
  • 4 1
@speedy-toast: If you're spending 11k anyway what's a few thousand more. I can't wait until you people find out how much boats cost!
  • 1 0
 @friendlyfoe: boats are insane
Especially offshore powerboats.... makes some supercars seem cheap
  • 24 1
Feeling better about the price I paid for a new KTM 350 right now Big Grin
  • 3 1
 Bingo! KTM 350s are sweet!
  • 3 1
Yeah the kenevo looks fun, but the value you get from a motorcycle for the price is amazingly better. And it wont depreciate the way that bicycles do.
  • 3 3
I love dirt bikes and once my career change is complete plan to get one but I'm still not sure they're more fun than a MTB. If you are riding in the mountains, dirtbikes are only fun going uphill. I'd rather be full pin on the downs.
  • 3 1
@friendlyfoe: dirtbikes are only fun uphill? Tell that to Kris Foster.
  • 5 0
Yeah I just picked up a brand new Husky 350 enduro bike. If only I had saved up another 5k dollars, I could've bought a specialized with a tiny electric motor in it!
  • 1 0
@Bushmaster123: Did you intentionally miss the "in the mountains" part of that statement? Random youtube clip but this looks like less fun than bombing down a MTB trail. www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_93A1idajM

I still want one though lol
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: Dude those guys are riding slow as hell. of course it doesn't look that fun if that's your reference lol
  • 22 3
I have to say, I have a long history of being very anti-EMTB. That said, I actually like the balance this machine strikes. For my normal weekday rides I am on a 7 mile loop that is effectively a 50 minute climb, followed by a 20 minute mostly-descent. If you're going to tell me that I can enjoy a machine that is just as capable as my current enduro bike on the descents, AND that I can possibly fit 2 laps into my normal 1 lap rides (I'm a father of two youngsters), I'm actually pretty interested.

Given that I also enjoy the "workout" of those laborious climbs, I would be curious to see kcal burn for the same ride ride time covering the extra miles. If a machine like this still leaves me accomplishing a similar amount of kcals over twice the distance, it could be a major winner. That said, I doubt you'd see the same heart rate elevations during the tricky parts of the climb - so it'll be difficult to get the same fitness benefits.
  • 8 0
You hit the nail on the head for me too. If the bike rides the same (i.e. it has the nimble/playfulness of a normal mtb), but I can get an extra lap in I am for intrigued by this bike.
  • 7 1
I’ve been commuting and MTBing on my Levo for over two years (I have a hardtail too but I sold my other full-sus as it wasn’t getting used enough). I’m a father of three small children and run my one business but the Levo let’s me fit a nice chunk of MTBing by taking the long way to or from work via some trails - in half an hour I can do 1100’ of climbing and descending in about 6 miles.

As it’s such a short blast I’m pedalling hard for the lot, even with the assistance cranked up. I don’t use a heart rate monitor but a few weeks ago I manually took my heart rate at the top of some climbs and it was up near my theoretical max. I also ride the Levo on group rides with the power off 95% of the time when I’m with the group (but use the power to get to and from the ride more quickly).

It’s a hefty beast but I like the stability that gives and I’m strong enough to manhandle it (and that too is great exercise).
  • 2 0
Echo what you're saying. I'm extremely interested in this bike, combine that with the fact that I've really been enjoying my geometron and this gets pretty close. That price thooo, sighhh.
  • 8 1
This is what this type of bike exactly does. I just got a Levo SL, bumped the front suspension to Fox factory 160mm and on the back Float X2. The bike is 39lbs and just rips. Still get an amazing workout but takes off the edge just enough on the climbs that I don't have to sit at the top panting for several minutes before I gain the energy back to do the downhill. I just keep going and rip the downs with no stopping. Super fun.
  • 4 0
@unusual-bread: I'm with you. My current steed is a 2020 Spec Enduro - loving the steeper, longer, more travel type Enduro bikes. Obviously, the bike in question is a direct comparison to my current bike, just with the benefit of doubling my watts on the way up.

I also like that its only about 7lbs heavier than my Enduro. Even if the battery dies, its just a little extra workout for a very similar bike.
  • 2 0
@dhx42: nothing nimble/playful about 442-447 chainstays. But the weight is impressive.
  • 6 0
If I wanted to do 1000m of climbing I'd have to plan it as a special event, carb load the night before and morning of, bringing food with, no alcohol for a day or two before etc. With this thing it'd just be a Tuesday ride. So sick.
  • 2 0
@DCS1138: I hear you with the Spec Enduro... More of pure enduro race steed. I was more commenting on the general concept of the bike - smaller motor/battery to provide some assist for faster laps but keeps the feel we've all become accustomed to riding.
  • 19 1
The Orbea Rise is over 5lbs lighter, has the same battery, the proven EP8 motor and....drum roll.....is $2500 less!

I know we are comparing a 140 bike and a 170 bike here, but come the f*ck on.

Spesh doin Spesh shit i guess....
  • 6 0
And people will still buy this over the Orbea!
  • 1 0
While the Rise is a bit of a smaller bike, it rides like a big bike and has twice the power... I feel good about my decision there in light of this. I'm guessing an updated Levo SL will give the Rise a run, but this isn't it...
  • 2 0
Several people already have changed their Rise’s shock to a 216x63 one to achieve 160mm of rear travel, put a 27.5 rear wheel, and have put also a 160mm fork up front, and are really happy with the mullet 160/160 setup they now have. Claims are it’s problem-free and you end up with a very light e-enduro bike.
  • 2 1
@hitarpotar: be careful what you read on the internet. Screwing with geometry causes all sorts of issues with cornering performance. It might be great in a straight line but usually screws up the grip in high speed and flat corners
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: how would slackening and lowering (barely) a bike screw up its grip in high speed and flat corners? Did my fair share of geo tinkering in the past and all that happened with the bike was it started swallowing the gnar even better...
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: Well from experience on my 2014 Giant Trance going from a 140-150mm fork felt great, but going from 150-160 completely ruined the bike (I only did this in anticipation of moving the fork over to a new frame a week later). With the 160 it felt great in a straight line going over rough stuff but there was a complete and total lack of front end grip when cornering. I am of the belief that you shouldn't be messing with things like BB drop and swingarm angle unless you know what you're doing. There are also plenty of people who went to 160mm forks on the same model Trance as me who loved it. This likely comes down to a difference in skill level, riding style, or possibly simply awareness of what the bike is doing under them. I am by no means a pro rider but I do seem to be fairly sensitive to differences in bike setup.
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: well, here’s my experience: went from a 180mm sc-fork and normal headset to a little higher 200mm dc-fork and a -2 angleset: felt a big improvement in all conditions. Later on, due to a new bar/stem combo, i had to extend the fork all the way to the max, making it considerably higher than before. This, together with a new, -3 angleset, made a HUGE difference in how the whole bike behaved: became an animal in high speed, corners, speed bumps, brake bumps, etc. All this on the very same frame. So i’m all in on tinkering with geo and travel (of course, you should know very well what you want and what you’re doing!!!). Smile

15,000 dollars... this is getting ridiculous
  • 10 4
You can get a new 2021 Hyundai Accent car for $15,000. the fact that a bike is as expensive as a car is f-ing ridiculous. Think of all the parts that go into a car and has a engine and transmission, etc.. The tires on the bike cost more than tires for a car but have about 1/10th of the raw materials in them.
Sorry guys and gals, the bike industry is Sticking it to us on this shit!!!

And yes, they will sell out, because supply is low, because people are rich or because people will take out a loan for a bike.
  • 4 1
Okay but now you compare a bike that is not on a hyundai accent level but mostly in terms of materials, technology, engineering and marketing, on a lamborghini aventador's level which starts at 420,000 USD.
  • 4 1
@tajtigabor: Not really. The bike industry is notorious for incredibly shitty quality control and manufacturing tolerances (and it's not even price related), something that's not a problem on Hyundai Accents. Materials, technology, and engineering are all much more expensive in cars than in bikes because of the quantity, complexity, quality control and tolerancing.

Basicly the Kenevo is only comparable to the lambo in the fact that they're both leisure products for rich people.
  • 10 1
After seeing my friends with Levo's have multiple motors replaced under warranty I would be absolutely terrified to own one of these outside of warranty. I would also be very picky about where I bought this. You are dependent on the shop if the electronic stuff breaks. 15k comes with an expectation for a higher level of service. I wonder how used values will hold up once second owners find themselves paying huge repair bills to keep them running or find themselves unable to even get support.
  • 1 0
I'm seeing the same thing in my riding area too. Motors just aren't holding up for the folks actually putting a few days a week use on them. It's almost as if you would need two in rotation as to not miss out on riding while the other motor is being addressed by the warranty department. And yeah, who is going to buy a two to three year old used ebike. This will be a huge hurdle for core riders that have fitness and ride frequently. Ebike manufacturers need to offer longer warranties and maybe even an extra swap out motor during initial purchase, to get core riders on board.
  • 10 0
In Summary: Not quite enough assist, and rides nearly as a good as an original unadulterated bike.

Sounds legit.
  • 13 6
Rich poser bikes. Like seeing the middle aged dude doing pizza wedges down the ski hill in full, top spec Arc'teryx gear. I swear, these days the more expensive the bike I see under a rider, the less they can actually ride it.
  • 2 2
 Thats actually most likely true.

The best dudes I see riding are the 12-15 y/o kids with old beat up Caynons, YTs or Commencals
  • 21 11
There is a walk mode as to assist pushing a bike? Too funny!
  • 13 8
 Its very useful actually
  • 9 0
Wonder when there will be 'bike rack mode' lol
  • 14 8
@chasintrails: please explain? You have the skills that warrant this bike, but can't push a 40 pound bike uphill? Wrists hurting from doing too many fillings?
  • 3 2
@ScottB-408: Dude! I need to design an E-rack. A rack with an electric arm to assist the loading. I'll base it on existing technology used to help geriatrics out of hospital beds. We'd make a fortune!
  • 24 13
@JDFF, easy on the snark. The walk mode is handy when you dismount on a super steep section of trail and need to push to a flatter portion to get back on. It's a situation that's more common on an eMTB because the motor allows you to attempt climbs you wouldn't ever try on a regular bike.
  • 6 1
@mikekazimer: Downhill trails as you churn the lips out Mike?
  • 12 10
@mikekazimer: sounds like a poorly designed trail or a trail that an ebike shouldn't be ascending? Or someone who doesn't warrant a bike of this caliber. Am I wrong?
  • 12 3
@JDFF, ebikes can make moto trails really fun to ride, trails that would be pretty miserable on a regular bike due to the ruts / steepness.
  • 2 1
@mikekazimer: that is a fair assessment. Agreed.
  • 26 4
@mikekazimer: You know what else makes moto trails fun to ride? A motorcycle!
  • 2 1
 @JDFF: yes you are.
  • 3 1
@kcy4130: too funny. I also happen to know that Kaz doesn't just stick to moto trails when he is riding his ebikeWink
  • 21 4
@kcy4130, true, but you can't exactly pedal a moto if you run out of gas. And then there's the noise, transportation to the trailhead, etc... All of these things are just options for goofing off outside. It doesn't really bother me what people choose to do.
  • 3 1
@mikekazimer: I'm all for goofing off outside. I'm just waiting for the a 35-40lb ebike (160/170ish) that can do 10,000' and has at minimum a five year motor warranty. When that's available, I'm in.
  • 5 0
@mikekazimer: I'm just busting your chops. But in all seriousness, if you're riding alone bikes even ebikes presumably, are better than a moto for exploring moto trails that are very techy like maybe above the rider's skill level. You can always carry a bike, even a 60lb ebike up a hill. On a moto, not so much. Even crashing off a bench cut trail on a steep slope can end up being a major ordeal trying to man handle the 240lbs moto back up onto the trail. That's why motorcycling alone is a much worse idea that biking alone. Moto's are still super fun tho.

  • 16 0
You would die from extreme dehydration due to the severe diarrhea before you got through $500 worth of those burritos.
  • 6 1
Came here for the comments about the price. Wasn’t disappointed. If you want to ride and can only afford a cheap bike get a cheap bike. If you have the means and want a $15000 e bike, buy one. Would I like one, yes, if I had that kind of spare cash to buy a bike would that be what I’d get, probably not. Still a cool machine and as I get older I can definitely see a time in my future where something like this will become a necessity for me to keep riding with my younger riding buddies.
  • 1 0
Yup. I’m the older you, and you are right. These will only get better / lighter so you’ll have plenty of choices in a few years and so likely won’t have to pay crazy $ like this for the only ebike that descends like a non-ebike. The $ is indeed nuts but the idea of getting extra laps daily on my Enduro with only an 8lb weight penalty is too fcking good.
  • 8 3
We're a Shimano STEPs dealer and I must say, Spec's e-integration is quite strong. I'm a former robotics/motor technologist (well, still practicing, but also running a bike shop!) and I follow the e-stuff out of technological intrigue.

Specialized is making the gangster move here: small battery, modest motor, and modest torque. There's a feedback loop on bigger motor needs bigger battery requiring bigger motor...etc. I've been part of engineering processes where that takes hold and at some point, you gotta draw a pragmatic line. Looks like here - they've set the bar for 40lb bike, and you'll get less assist and modest range, but a 'normal' ride out of the deal. And I think that's what people are after. E-bike drag racing uphill with the most torque available in Boost mode is fun for one run. And it eats your battery. And it makes for a 54lb beast that gives you a jammer putting it on the bike rack.

What is enduring fun? Having the "E" give you legs to match some riders you want to hang with. That micro adjust feature is pro for that. Or getting those 2+ hour rides you maybe used to do, but don't have time to stay in shape for.

I'm personally not on the "E" train, but I see where it adds value to the cycling community, and these types of "E" with these battery sizes and motor sizes will win the day IMO in the long run.

The Specialized pricing scheme is true to form - you know why they sell a $15k bike? So the $10k one looks like a deal... That and after having worked on a few of these, the gadgets are too much. One bolt can not serve four purposes!

  • 1 0
@speedy-toast: seriously. Bought a 1 year old tx300 for $7k, ca plated too.
Bought a 1 year old jeffsy frame for $1500. That said, if one decides 123$ is in the budget, that's great.
I choose to live in very high tax/cost state of ca, so my fault for not having more discretionary income.

I think this bike is targeted at people that want hide that they have an e-bike. It looks like a regular acoustic MTB! Kinda like Depend adults diapers that you can wear under your regular clothes without people noticing it. I will get an e-bike when I become a first time grandfather but I won't judge otherwise capable people that get them at of a younger age (cough-cheaters!-cough).
  • 6 0
Looks like the perfect ebike to be fair, but I'll never even consider it at those prices, not in a million years
  • 6 2
Seems like the perfect choice for the person who keeps riding with their much fitter friends. More like a cheat mode for regular mountain biking than riding an almost-motorbike.

  • 2 0
Extrapolating this values for the Car Industry, we have, on one side a....

TOYOTA YARIS GR (For ex.... a YT Decoy base model ~ 5k)
So this Ebikspec, is 3x more than a Yaris GR, that would place in the......should be a 911!

I understand the value of a 911 being 3x of a Yaris GR
But.... on the Ebike sceene.... power is the same, weight....uhmmmm almost the same! Range? Uhhmmmm maybe the Cheaper bike will have more range!

And the other aspect is:
Buying this Ebike New, 15K.... and you want to sell it after 2 year. Will ANYONE in it's perfect mind, would pay 10K????? 9k???
Because in 2 years the top of the range of any brand will be MUUUCCHHHH better than this 15K
  • 3 1
Nice bike but a total rip off.. 15k and it still has the same 25kmh cap all e bikes have, which means above 25kmh, which I regularly go over cruising mundane trails on my 'analogue' bike, you are still stuck with an expensive paperweight. I mean I built my sb165 for 8k with miles better components, full carbon hoops, fancy hubs, PUSH 11.6, Smaspot etc. Only a guy with money but no proper knowledge of what makes a good bike will buy this, all them components are generic high end off the shelf factory parts, not boutique parts, and in the case of the expert not even high end. Why would I spend 33% more for standard FOX Factory and SRAM crap, when I can build a bike with a £1200 custom tuned shock, coil fork, Shigura brakes and 1300 gram wheelset for less. This is definitely not a case of you get what you pay for, you are paying a massive premium for a food processor motor by the bottom bracket. I've got toy rc cars that weigh 3kg and put out 9000 watts, not 250w and they didn't cost me 15 grand. This is for the rich fat ass that wants to show off but doesn't care if he is actually getting the best performance possible.
  • 1 0
25kmh limit is imposed by law, at least around here, but I belive its the same across the Europe. Any faster and you are a motorcycle so licence, registration, insurance etc.
  • 3 1
“Nice bike but a total rip off.. 15k and it still has the same 25kmh cap all e bikes have”

Apparently if you spend over a million quid on a Bugatti or Koenigsegg the 70mph UK motorway speed limit still applies?!!
  • 1 0
@threehats: But this is the point, paying such a massive premium for a bike just because it has a motor that is restricted and has 250 watts when you can build up a Yeti, Santa Cruz etc or other high end bike with luxury components not just mid/high end for 2/3 the cost. You spend 15 grand on a bike and past 15mph end up with a worse performing bike than one that costs you thousands less. For 15 grand you should be getting creap of the crop, Trickstuff brakes, custom shocks, high end wheelsets, SQ labs saddle etc, not alloy wheels and a bloody FOX X2.
  • 2 0
No head scratching here, this bike is definitely aimed squarely at the ‘partnered with cyclist but can’t keep up’ sector and maybe also the ‘don’t want a 50lb bike for the 2-mile loop I ride’ sector and possibly even the bougiest of in-town bike path racers. Quite the genre bender.

So here's an e-bike that is actually legal to ride where I live as the motor is below 250W of power.
Granted, Sweden is not the biggest of markets, but having a legal e-bike could be good for a brand on that specific market.
I actually find it more logical to have pedal assist on a bike that is focused on the descent rather than on an XC/trail bike.
  • 1 0
don't get putting trail casing tires on a supposed enduro bike--anyone who rides hard in rocky terrain will shred those sidewalls. typical specialized b.s. trying to meet weight weenie marketing goals at the expense of durability.

very difficult to remove battery is a deal breaker for anyone looking to travel by airline to ride--buy a bosch or shimano system & in theory you can rent a battery in foreign lands.

personally i'll take the weight penalty of the 2021 commie metapower 29 with full fox factory spec at half the price!
  • 1 0
Hi, I'm looking for a drawing of the Kenevo SL, which is showing the way the rear brake hose has to run thru the frame.
Can anybody get me a copy of such a service drawing?
For the Levo SL there was a "Tech_Service_Workbook_Retailer", I hope there is something similar for the Kenevo SL.
  • 4 2
I can buy a used GS BMW moto for that! I scored a barely used 2021 Levo Comp for $6000. I don't ride it as much as my real bikes; although it's fun to take out with my son and my other buddies for shuttle days!
  • 6 3
I will tell you who the bike is for. People who want to lap and pre ride enduro races in the week leading up to practice day. Example: hubapalooza enduro
  • 2 2
But if the goal is just to pre ride as much as possible why not get a bike with more power/range?
  • 3 0
@Austink: Because dynamically it's very similar if not identical to your standard enduro bike. So you get to lap the course, not kill your legs before the race and have a good sense for how to ride most sections.
  • 4 2
 Thats what shuttles are for.

How much further can you go on this compared to the Enduro? Or is it just a thing of being a little bit less tired? Motor is supossed to have 2X your power but then the bike is heavier. Just trying to understand the benefits of this over the non motorized one since the turbo levo seems to be an different league.
  • 4 1
15000 USD...... more expensive then a KTM E-XC 13,599.00 USD.... how we still doing this, can guarantee you they are making way less electric dirtbikes.
  • 2 1
Close but not ready yet. I want a bike this light and flickable but i also want to be able to get a bunch of laps in for long decent oriented riding. In 5 years when i feel im old enough to warrant an e bike you guys should have it figured out.
  • 1 0
If u started investing at age 16, are now 40, and use the 4% rule, 15k is like putting a dollar in a pop machine. For ur avg joe, this is worth more than ur truck (worth more than both my trucks combined). Maybe i should ride this to the bush and pack my pickup on the back & ride it on the trails. Lol.
  • 3 0
A dollar, invested at four percent interest and compounded annually over 24 years, would become $2.56. What are you even talking about?
  • 1 0
 4% with zero risk... right....
  • 1 0
Never mind the bike.....a Giro Tyrant, worn by someone less than 25. Gives me hope that I can get one to protect my gizzards and not need to be able to slap berms and steeze to pull it off.

*50:01, nah, 51 today. Happy birthday me.
  • 3 0
Like electrification, they managed to annihilate the $ 10,000 MTB ceiling. They are already much more expensive than a motocross and approaching an Elantra.
  • 4 3
This is pretty much the perfect e-bike designed for me and the wife. With kids we don’t get the chance to do huge epic rides anymore. But we could both use the extra power for short fast blasts around trail centres (for multiple runs in short time) and to help tow the kids up the hills.

And it looks like a normal bike and doesn’t weigh a ton so the wife won’t struggle to throw it around.
  • 3 2
 Take aways from the article
The battery doesn't last long enough
Its great on the downhills.

My take away from those take aways?

MY battery runs (may legs/stamina) out quicker than my buddies
Why am I spending $22,000cad on a dh bike??

Also... So it's $12,000+ to put an under powered motor, with an underwhelming battery on my enduro....

F@ck off ha
  • 1 0
F@%$ u specialized you keep making these amazing machines that can still be called a bicycle. . . ( maybe. . Open for interpretation). They look amazing Mike says there the shit (paraphrasing) but there so expensive. . . . I want one but holy shit I have to work for a living and if I want fancy bike parts I got to put in some OT. Even a used one of these in few years is out of reach. Can you put your fancy motor and fancy batteries in some aluminum with some "ok" components and let us look at a sweet mustang instead of these Ferraris.
  • 1 0
As someone on the shorter side, I understand the entire industry seems to be going with wagon wheels, it would be nice however to have some options. 29'' - obviously better in a straight line, but when it comes to dynamic performance and manoeuvrability surely there's still a good portion of riders out there wanting the choice between wheel size
  • 1 0
Weighs less and performs better than the DH bike I had 21 years ago. And adjusted for inflation (this bike would cost $9672 in 2000 dollars), not all that much more expensive...

I'm still not quite ready to jump on the e-bike bandwagon, but the tech really is amazing.
  • 1 0
I would rather take the risk that one breaks underneath me and buy a Chinese carbon e-bike frame for $500-$800 than spend $8500 on a frame alone. One is the possibility that my frame catastrophically fails at the worst possible time. The other is the definition of failed judgment, broken wallet, depleted savings.
  • 1 0
No thanks. 11000 usd for crappy alloy rims, bars, dropper etc. Go specialized. I got a Enduro. Only thing left stock is the rear shock (ohlins coil) and the front wheel. I just warrantied the front rim though. Cos it flexed so it broke, they not very flexy. Pos.
  • 2 0
Buy BITCOIN OR OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCY. way better than buying this high end e-bikes. within 10 years you can buy as many high end e-bike you want once BITCOIN value goes beyond $1 million.
  • 1 0
I see alot of negative comments around here, but this bike is f*cking amazing, this bike is for the rider that has the legs to keep up with regular eMTBers without the weight penalty of a regular eMTB. Most of eBikers i've ridden with have no pedaling power of their own and when i ride with them on aregular eMTB i outpaced them for a lot, so this bike is gonna even things out, with the plus that it is a sub 19kg bike.
  • 5 2
So stoked for the eMTB field test!!!!! Pinkbike is f-ing rad, in my opinion.
  • 4 2
Where are my crypto 'investors' at that thought they could buy something that costs this much until they looked at their portfolio this morning?
  • 3 0
Somebody is mad they didn't buy bitcoin in 2012. Wink
  • 6 2
Fuck I want one of these.Think of the laps!
  • 2 0
Compared to other e-bikes this one doesn't look like a dying pregnant walrus which is cool, but as 100 others have said, 15K is full derp money for a bicycle.
  • 4 2
Of course it's going to shred downhill..so does every other bike made in the past few years..and what's the rush ..why do u need a motor
  • 3 0
#dadlife I don’t have the time to train to be in excellent shape to bang out a cool ride in 90 minutes. With this I could… except I don’t have that kind of money.
  • 4 0
Specialized killed it with everything except the price
  • 1 0
Like it but can’t afford it I’m too poor for electricity so I will have to rely on my legs for a few more years!
Hope they have solved the cracking issues the enduro suffered from.
  • 2 0
Specialized, your next move should be $20,000 Kenevo to get even more comments on pinkbike ($15,000 ebike and $1,000 carbon balanced bike are not enough)!
  • 1 0
Love the concept of the bike but I don't really understand why Specialized named it "Kenevo SL". I mean it looks like a Electric version of the enduro bike... (If someone can help me)
  • 2 0
The most exciting part about this advertisement for me is the prospect of the "next gen" Enduro having adjustable headset and hi/low chainstays like the Stumpy Evo.
  • 5 1
I'm glad its $15K. Once these become affordable we're all f'd
  • 1 0
Nice idea but poorly executed. This needed the Shimano Ep8 motor like the one in the Orbea Rise with 60nm torque and the a 400wh battery. Regarding the price, absolutely ridiculous......
  • 1 0
I don't care how good it is, how well it's made, anything about it. $15k USD is taking the p1ss.

As a comparison, these cost similar cash (in the UK) www.ducati.com/gb/en/bikes/monster/monster
  • 1 0
How many m of elevation can it do on one charge on the lowest, the middle and highest power settings? That seems a more useful metric than "range" as it will obviously be able to go further if it isn't pointing upwards.
  • 6 3
Douche Scooter - Coming to flat single track near you soon
  • 1 0
I saw a v10 for sale on my craigslist where the guy bought some serious aftermarket moter for it. it looked ugly but he said it could reach really fast speeds to get uphill.
  • 3 0
Can it take a dual crown though?
  • 2 1
Why can't you manufactures figure out the longer the bike the steeper the seat tube angle? If the rider is tall =long legs=butt to far back over rear. Math people!!!
  • 1 0
A better way to deal with that is longer chainstays. Why should a tall rider get forced into a TT bike style pedalling position (which may be fine on very steep climbs but do you want it everywhere else?)?
  • 1 0
Specialized doesn't produce a 77' ESTA/535mm reach bike yet with OR without a motor. I think we can safely say that if you're an XXL person Specialized is not interested in serving you.
  • 1 0
@threehats: the best way is optimizing both of these parameters.
  • 2 1
Not an ebike fan, but this is very close to the level I'd consider getting one. Shave 2kgs more even with using 27.5 wheels and I got a serious thing to think about

Alrighty hear me out, we all know we hate waterbottle cages on the underside of the downtube, but why not put bosses there for the rage extender, doesn't need to be as protected and keeps the triangle open...
  • 3 2
Ever seen a lithium battery explode?
  • 1 0
 @DHhack: good point.

Counter point, I would have to assume the external pack has a fair degree of built in protection as it could go flying from the bottle cage in either position.

Regardless I feel like there's a better place they can add it other than in the only bottle cage.
  • 1 0
@rclugnut: for sure, it’s just a convenience thing and keeps the weight relatively low.
  • 2 0
Checks bank account to see if there’s $15k I forgot about... nope, dang it. This would be fun.
  • 1 1
Not gonna lie that thing looks sick! I would rather spend the money on a brand new dirt bike for less though, and keep my nice non-assisted pedal enduro bike. Best of both worlds, no expensive ebike required lol.
  • 1 2
iv just had my new vitus mythque 29 deliverd for 1650. looks like im working poor in the mtb world nowerdays with these prices, when i tell my work mates the vitus is 1650 thay think that is well expensive.ebikes are fun but non of them are 15000 quidsworth of fun.id rather buy a suron with an upgrade battery.
  • 3 1
for 15k it should with a solar charged battery that produces snacks and water with the extra energy from the downhill
  • 1 0
You’re paying for the name. Look at Gibson and Fender. Other companies make way better products but people gravitate to their history
  • 1 0
if you drink straight out of the range extender, does that double your own power, which will be doubled again by the bike? asking for a friend Big Grin
  • 1 0
Can we talk about the real injustice here? Americans get this bike in a sweet yellow colour, but in Canada they are only offering boring-ass grey? Bah!
  • 1 0
i pray that privateer bikes ebike in development meets the fire fighter salary constraints 161 with a motor pretty please !!!!!!
  • 2 0
Tell me you've had an orchiectomy without telling me you've had an orchiectomy.
  • 2 0
The price is nuts, but that's the best e-bike I've seen so far....hands down
  • 4 2
Great! A $15,000 moped! Does it come with a factory installed fat guy, or do you have to provide your own?
  • 1 0
So $15K, or an extra $500 for half the torque power and battery life of the turbo levo $14.5K that was released a few weeks ago?
  • 1 0
All other traits of this bike aside. I gotta say IMO it's the best looking e-mtb so far.

I guess $15k better get ya something.
  • 1 1
So we just cool with sneaky e-bikes now? Definitely no way that could negatively impact trail access. Looking forward to when they remove the pedal assist and we can all admit these are just electric dirt bikes.
  • 2 3
@bainer66 @TypicalCanadian @barp @Oldgerald and all the other delightful downvoters on PB. i should clarify...my dad was an anesthesiologist-my apologies. he retired 5 years ago. the final 5 years of his working life he was faculty at ucsd medical center teaching anesthesia, not practicing. before that he was chief of anesthesia for 10 years at grossmont hospital in the san diego area. definitely not a hack...what else can i say? medical school is hard, and expensive. really, really expensive. medical school typically costs 200-300 thousand american drakmas. if you think medicine is an easy path to riches you're wrong. i'm semi retired from the movie biz-art dept. middle management, foreman level 2. mill-shop foreman, prop-shop foreman, foam-shop foreman, metal-shop foreman. on a 12 hour day i make 800$. which is probably more than my brother makes-and he's a psychiatrist, working for kaiser. and he has a PhD in neurochemistry. all i did was go to art-school (calarts) where i mostly f*cked off and drank and chased girls. my wife is a tech recruiter for netflix/google/facebook etc. all day long i hear her quoting hourly rates to candidates for job titles like user interface/user experience at hourly rates that usually exceed 125-150? for a BS in comp sci and 5-10 years practical experience. we live in a neighborhood full of doctors. my income puts me in the 5% individually, and my wife makes more than i do. but i barely work 6 months a year. did i mention that i'm not particularly ambitious? and we live in a neighborhood full of people who went to med school. maybe the MDs out there crack the top 1%, but it's hardly worth it. there are easier ways to make a living...
  • 3 1
 I didn’t downvote you. I made a joke. Woooooosh.
  • 3 1
Man you are very defensive for a career that wasn’t even yours. I don’t think any one said that physicians don’t deserve to be paid well. You just claimed that malpractice insurance offsets the net gain. Average salary for an anesthesiologist in the USA seems quite decent. Yes that’s after almost an eternity of school, residency, fellowship etc.

Just saying seem a bit old for the good ol “oh yeah my dad can do a 1000 push-ups” argument that children have on the play ground.
Our playground argues about craft beer, wheel size, e bikes, and maybe if rider x got robbed haha

  • 2 0
I’m holding out for the $17,000 Evo Kenevo retro version.....just sayin!
  • 6 5
350Wh battery. Is that a joke? What, are we supposed to ride it up one hill?
  • 3 0
I'm not too familiar with what happens when the battery run flats. Do you push against the resistance of a dead motor like a generator? or can you disengage and ride as normal? 350Wh would be a 1 hour climb basically, okay for the shorter rides, but no good for a day long epic.
  • 7 0
@Maestroman87: for Shimano ep8 you only pedal against the additional E-Bike weight and maybe super grippy tires, combined with a usually larger chain ring. The Motor itself doesnt brake you
  • 7 0
 No, you pedal.
  • 4 0
Remember it's a smaller motor and lighter bike, I have been getting 4-5 hour rides in on a single charge.
  • 6 0
@noplacelikeloam: In Soviet Russia, eBike pedals you....
  • 2 0
The smaller motor pulls less power from the battery so the same range as the regular kenevo. I think more with the ranger extender battery.
  • 2 0
Unless you constantly in turbo mode it should last you for more
  • 2 0
@Maestroman87: There are 2 freewheels on ebikes, one on the rear wheel (duh), and the other in the motor. You need both or else you wouldn't be able to not pedal.

For some 350WH might not be good for "all day" to some, but depending on what you want, it can be enough. Sure, I have a 700Wh battery in my Levo, but I can ride my usual home loop (~8km and ~450m of elevation) a dozen or more times on a single charge, so while it's great to have the extra range, in theory, not always as big an issue.
  • 2 0
I have found that the 350wh on the normal SL is better range and/or vert than the typical 504wh full powered ebikes (in my experience 1st gen Kenevo).
  • 2 0
That fox 38 in Ohlins colors on the expert is great.

@mikekazimer You have the Float X2 on the Expert build but specialized has Float X listed. Spec change?

  • 1 0
I am cheaper than most people, but I have never even paid 15k for a vehicle.
  • 1 0
I just bought a used 03 Jetta for $2000, so my bike budget is anywhere between Huffy and Schwinn
  • 1 0
Maybe if they sell enough of them they can knock down the price of the mere mortal bikes.
  • 1 0
Those specs are wrong. The S-Works has a 38 Factory and the Expert does not have a Deity Copperhead stem.
  • 1 0
The tire specs are wrong in the article. It's butcher grid trail t9 front, t7 rear in 2.3

What is it with Specialized's e-bike names? Levo sounds like the cycling equivalent of a little blue pill, promising to help you achieve a harder and longer ride. Kenevo makes me think I should be on a rocket powered bike jumping a gorge or maybe a bunch of school busses.

Sick looking bike, hangover from the price.

  • 1 0
Specialized sees it the other way round for sure Smile
  • 5 2
please stop with the acoustic bike and analog bike jargons, bikes are not musical instruments. acoustic refers to creation of sound also analog synthesizers use electricity. i know i know i should shut up, but e-bikers loose their shit too when they call their e-bikes mopeds or scooters. so just pls no!

its a joke ! , not that that I would ever ride or buy an ebike , I hate them even more electric cars!
total marketing bulls#it , it will kill the MTB world , even my LBS keep asking when I will buy one!
They make out they like them just because they have to sell them to keep the importers happy!
EMTB bikes are gradually ruining moutain biking , bum lickers.

If you are paying full retail for these, I'm laughing at you.
  • 3 6
An ebike for people that are strong enough that they can actually put down enough watts, they dont need 4X the boost. So better for real riders then.
  • 3 1
A "real rider" by your definition would surely just get an actual mountainbike instead of an e-bike, no?
  • 1 0
@BenTheSwabian: Not really, I mean anyone that rides a lot can put a reasonable amount of power down for a time. 4x power is just silly. You max out the torque before you max out your legs.
