First Look: The 2020 Specialized Kenevo Aims to Replace Your Shuttle Truck

Oct 1, 2019
by Mike Kazimer

Meet the new Kenevo, the electric counterpart to the recently released Specialized Enduro. It's designed to be a shuttle truck or chairlift replacement, with 180mm of travel, longer, slacker geometry than the previous version, and a dual-crown fork on the Expert model that further cements its position as a gravity-oriented machine.

There are two models, the Kenevo Expert, which is priced at $8,225 USD, and the Kenevo Comp, which goes for $5,525. The Expert build kit includes a RockShox Boxxer Select RC fork that's paired with a SuperDeluxe Coil Select shock, while the Comp model gets a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 single crown fork and a Bomber CR coil shock. Both models are equipped with SRAM Code R brakes, and Specialized's 27.5 x 2.6” Black Diamond casing Butcher tires.

Specialized Kenevo Details

• Wheel size: 27.5"
• Travel: 180mm front and rear
• Aluminum frame
• 64° head angle
• 77° seat tube angle
• 700WH battery on Expert model
• New Specialized 2.1 motor
• Sizes: S2, S3, S4, S5
• Weight (Expert model, claimed): 54.1 lb / 24.5 kg
• Price: $5,525 - $8,225 USD

The two models share identical frames, motors, and software, but the Expert model is equipped with a 700Wh battery that's said to provide 40% more range compared to the Comp's 500Wh battery.

Frame Details

From a distance, the Kenevo strikes a profile that looks like a non-motorized bike; it's only when you get closer that the oversized tube dimensions become apparent. The Kenevo now uses the same sidearm frame design that's found on the Stumpjumper, a move that was done to increase stiffness and minimize flex in rough terrain. The aluminum frame is also 2.2 pounds lighter than before, and that's without the new, lighter motor. The battery is tucked into the downtube, which means that Specialized's SWAT box secret compartment isn't a feature here, but there is a multi-tool mounted underneath the bottle cage for easy access. Sizes S3 - S5 are spec'd with 160mm dropper posts, and the smallest size gets a post with 130mm of travel.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that the complete weight hasn't changed much (54.1 pounds for the Expert, and 52 pounds for the Comp), but that's due to the fact Specialized went with a burlier component spec this time around - the heavier duty tires and dual crown fork add on the weight that was shaved from the frame and motor.

Geometry

The Kenevo's head angle went from 65- down to 64-degrees, and the reach numbers have been significantly increased for all models. For example, the new S4 size has a reach of 494mm, while a size large in the previous version was 455mm. The seat tube length has been reduced to give riders the ability to up- or downsize depending on their personal preferences, and the angle has been steepened – it now sits at 77-degrees.

Suspension Design

Like the new Demo and the Enduro, the Kenevo's kinematics have been revised in an effort to give it better bottom-out resistance and more speed over chunky terrain. The leverage ratio is more progressive than the previous model, and the axle path is almost identical to the new Enduro, with a few more millimeters of rearward travel in the initial part of the travel compared to the previous version. That change is intended to allow the rear wheel to move up and over obstacles more quickly, rather than getting hung up and impeding forward progress.

Specialized 2.1 Motor

E-bikes still aren't giving analog bikes a run for their money when it comes to overall weight, but they are getting lighter and sleeker at a rapid pace. Specialized was able to make their motor significantly lighter thanks to the use of a full magnesium housing and by mounting the motor directly to the frame, steps that helped them shed 800 grams.

According to Specialized, the 2.1 motor is 15% smaller than the prior version, yet also manages to be more efficient and powerful. Rider input is said to be amplified by 410%, providing up to 560 watts and 90Nm of torque. The motor hardware was developed in conjunction with Brose, but the actual software was developed by Specialized engineers in Switzerland.

The Kenevo can be used with Specialized's Smart Control feature, which allows riders to enter the distance they'd like to ride in the Mission Control app, and then let the software calculate the correct power output to keep the battery from running out of juice. There's also a new mode that can be accessed in the Mission Control app – Shuttle Mode. That mode delivers the maximum amount of power with less pedaling force required, although the top speed that the motor will assist to is still 20mph in the United States, and 25kph in Europe.

The actual battery run time will depend on terrain steepness and how much motor support is being used, which is why the run time is listed as being between 1-5 hours. The battery can be charged on the frame (there's a charge port near the bottom bracket), or easily removed and charged off the bike.

The Kenevo Comp is equipped with a 500Wh battery and a 180mm Marzocchi Z1 fork.

When are they going to change the trail right of way signs to add/put E-bike riders with earbuds in as the hierarchy of right of way? This way we don't have to continue to get mad when they blast towards everyone else without moving from the middle of the trail.

If you live in an area that has trails that pair well with ebikes, do not listen to these negative, uninformed comments or you will be missing out on a hella good time.. Ebikes are ???? still a workout, they just require the topography and enough trail to make them a viable option. They are completely legal everywhere in northwest Arkansas. Before I moved here I was a complete hater, moron and a*shole that would talk shit to people riding them. Someone talked me into trying one at outer bike and it was a complete eye opener. You go faster, farther, and they are so damn fun. They have different modes that allow you to control your workout and allow weaker riders to keep up with stronger riders in group rides. If they are not for you, that’s cool but I’ve been riding for 16 years, it’s always been for exercise and fun. I assure you, the exercise piece is still there but the fun factor is off the charts.

  • 1 0
 @kmg0: There it is ...
  • 2 0
@d-man: lol i thought everyone here is like "but emtb is not mtb"

Fact is, it's *almost* the same BUT you have a motor. So, not quite the same sport.

If you don't yield to no-moto descenders, you're a weiner. Yield to climbers is for no-moto. It's eeeeasy to start on a 10%+ grade on an ebike. So it's just plain courtesy.

Other than that, ride and have fun.

(PS - I hate "rules", I like sharing the trails with respectful trail users)

This honestly seems like the only legitimate type of ebike for an able bodied person. Replacing your shuttle truck is pretty sensible.
  • 53 33
Yeh but then comes the land access thingy. In places where you can't shuttle by car and there are no lifts, mountainbiking used to be self regulated at least by ones physical ability. Not any more.
  • 29 3
I agree. I'm not interested in an ebike at all for general riding, but I can see them as a replacement for shuttle trucks or bike park lifts. With the latter, there is no worry about any land access issues. And really, I don't see the access issues if you're just going up on a fire road. It's not as if pedal assist DH bikes are likely to be faster on the downs.
  • 44 4
@MarcusBrody: The thing for me is, I just dont see the benefit of eliminating chairlifts. I can get a better equipped DH Bike for about half the price, which feels better going downhill because its lighter. The nearest DH track to me sells day tickets for 20 euros, so I could do about 180 days before the e-bike uphill is cheaper that chairlift...
  • 12 7
@MarcusBrody: I've been saying this for years. I never have time to shuttle or ride my bike to the top of my favorite trail, but with this I could do it in less than 2 hours. The down will be plenty of workout and won't need the power to drop rocks.
  • 25 46
flag NotNamed (Oct 1, 2019 at 9:59) (Below Threshold)
@Floho: The point is: Really gnarly tracks usually have chairlift access.
So why Bike up when you can shuttle faster and get better downhill with a lighter Bike?

This will be bought most often by people who ride mellow trails and need all the suspension because "Ive got kids and a job so no time for everything" or something like that

But oh well
  • 82 2
@NotNamed: "Really gnarly tracks usually have chairlift access." Huh?? You must be new at this.
  • 4 2
@Floho: I think that if there are chairlifts already there, then they're a really good option. They tend to be only in places where there are already ski hills though, so that limits the potential of bike parks in areas where there are not. The infrastructure cost is just too high for putting in a chairlift for bike park usage alone for a lot of places.

But I do agree with you: All things being equal, I'd rather ride a chairlift and have a lighter bike.
  • 3 0
 @tiredsoul: exactly my thoughts .... :-)
  • 11 1
Exactly. This is the first ebike I've seen that I'd actually like to own. A lot of my rides consist of a 45 minute gravel climb followed by a 15 minute technical descent. To be able to cut my time grinding gravel in half, and maybe even get a better workout on the descent would be pretty cool. If PNF allowed ebikes, this would be a dream for Farlow Gap.
  • 14 7
@Floho: I lighter DH bike isn’t necessarily better and definitely not quicker!

This thing isn't meant for us, it is just for those 45 year old guys who think a big bike with a dual crown fork is just the ticket to filling the mid life crisis shaped hole in their lives. Most will never see anything more difficult than a fire road.
  • 29 3
@Mojo348: Who’s us ? I’m one of those who you abruptly speak of , I might be having a midlife crisis however I challenge you in a Dh dual anytime pal Big Grin
  • 8 6
@Matt115lamb : I'm not sure its that easy to claim that. Obviously you'd be faster on a 17 kg DH bike than a 11 kg all carbon dh bike, because you couldnt ride it over 5 mph or it would break apart.
But I do think that a 17 kg DH bike will be faster than a 24 kg "E-DH", because it will be easier to change direction and get fast lines. Obviously the e-bike gives you a certain boost, but I have never found that boost to outweigh the benefit of beeing able to move around the bike quicker. This might also have something to do with the fact that I am in good enough shape to pedal a bike at a pretty reasonable speed, even without electric assistance. I do however realize that not everybody has the time to exercise as much as I do.
Still, for me personally, I would say that a lighter DH bike (17 vs 24kg) is quicker and better.

@Floho: True, but my local lift shuts at 4pm. in summer here it's light till midnight. i can totally see the point of these for afterwork shreds
  • 7 0
I agree, there are a plenty of park running dirty old trucks 24/7 during the warmer months. This bike is a real alternative to the uplifts in those kind of parks, it's got to be better for the environment right?

On the flip side, could also be a great bike for privateer riders. Those competing at higher levels but also need to hold down a day job, allows them to make better use of their time giving them more riding hours. Maybe allowing them to get a contract and go full time!?

There are plenty of benefits for able bodied riders being brought to the e-bike world, the only thing that needs to be addressed now is the price tag. Still totally unaffordable for most riders I know.
  • 8 0
@ChrisLanaway: hmmm, it would be interesting to compare the environmental impact of every single rider that uses "dirty" shuttle vans buying "dirty" batteries and motors, but not using the vans for uplift. I doubt anyone has actually done the calculations, but I suspect it's not as simple as that.
For batteries and motors that have a large embedded pollution, using them lots is important to recover the "dirtiness". So for a hill considering an uplift service, having a fleet of these as rentals instead of vans would probably be a clean option. Getting everyone to buy them, and only use them 2 hours a week leaves a lot of precious materials sat in garages doing nothing 166 hours a week.
  • 1 0
@mountainsofsussex: for sure, would be interesting to see some kind of study looking into this. As you say, a better option may be for bike parks to invest in rental fleets. A good option as it brings money in for the upkeep of trails, now largely paid for by the uplift.

I don’t think it’s a long term solution but maybe in the interim a smart change to help reduce the carbon footprint. All depending on the impact of the battery/motor production of course. That said, carbon frames are notoriously bad for the environment in terms of initial production but I remember reading that the amount of distance needed to travel to offset that v car usage was actually surprisingly low.
  • 3 6
@IluvRIDING: yep, we can expect closing some Alpine areas to bikers thanks to ebikes pretty soon
  • 4 7
@Matt115lamb: Us is people reading this. Just look at who is riding big travel e-bikes when you are next out on the trails. Its not you or me. Its some guy who never rode a MTB before. Probably 10 years ago same guy would have been considering buying a Harley. But now the big squishy e-bike with a super cool looking dual crown ticks the box better. That's the market they're going after. Its huge, and its not us who live and breath it. And thats ok btw. Just where things are at....
  • 12 3
@Mojo348: nope. It's me and my buddies who've been riding mtb for 30 years, have solid blue collar jobs, spend money on the sport we love, and pretty sure we all go bigger and faster than you and most of the other commenters that stereotype emtb riders.
  • 8 0
@ranke: I’m still struggling to get the stereotyping/hate for emtb. Met an old dude at Degla last winter, he’s been riding MTB since it first arrived in the U.K.. He bought an emtb and was telling us how he used to only manage 2x loops in the winter, we met him on his 4th that day. We joined him in a descent, could not touch him and he didn’t pedal once! Not all emtb riders are fat and lazy.
  • 5 0
@ChrisLanaway: @Mojo348: I'm a bit surprised we're still so deep in the polarized opinions too. I'd think mtb guys get enough exercise to exorcise that vitriol... but we love this way of life, and the hate is understandable when we might lose riding access to amazing trails/landscapes. Too bad the Us v Them mindset / biology has such pull Frown
Personally lean toward less motors/more exercise, and definitely less land access disasters in the U.S.. And less hate.
  • 2 0
@WoodenCrow: I think the situation might be different in the US, in the UK and Sweden it's unlikely that Emtb riders actually venture much further that the local trails off of a carpark. Generally speaking they have a positive impact opening up exercise and the great outdoors to some that may not have either been inclined to or able.

I do agree that it would be a shame if land access became limited due to damage to trails and land surrounding them, education is key though. Some kind of regulation could be good too, clearly sign and close off certain areas to emtb's if there is likely to be land damage etc. A bit like what is in place for Motocross/enduro riders here, there a tracks and trails that can be used out in the deep forest in the autumn but close during the winter/spring/summer when they would suffer excessive damage.

Who knows? In the meantime I'll keep hauling my lazy ass reluctantly up the climbs, at least I know I earn a cake and beer at the end!

agreed. I'm glad I stuck with the 2019 though rather than waiting around, paying a grand more, and having a dual crown. The previous model is like a heavy Canfield One and I love it. Epic mini-dh bike that's really at home in the steeps, gnar, and jumps, but doesn't feel overgunned in mellower areas you might ride once in a while. Put the dual crown on it, and you have a very, very specialized (no pun intended) rig for people that live in areas that have super gnar everywhere. I'd love it if it were appropriate, but guessing most people aren't surrounded by that type of accessible terrain. For those that are... if this bike is anywhere near as good as the previous model. wow. best ebike out there. hands down.

@Fix-the-Spade: My OG scream clocked in at 59lb. Never had a problem handling it, it was what it was back in the day. Built to beat the hell out of
  • 2 0
@ejopdahl: You can feel it, but it's not as big a deal as you'd think, mostly you feel the extra weight laying the bike over in a carve, airing off features, landing. This bike makes a lot of sense, but it's still not equivallent to a DH bike, not multipurpose enough to be both lift served and shuttle monster.
  • 6 5
@LuvAZ: then maybe you need to work on your bike handling skills - try riding an MX bike, learn how to use your brakes to aid in bike movement, things like that. E-bikes are awesome in how stable they feel at speed, how active the suspension feels, and how they open up a wider variety of trails to people who may have problems getting to these trails..
  • 1 1
I would buy a Surron bee and be done with it. And spare some cash too.
  • 2 1
@themountain: I've gone down the Sur Ron rabbit hole and will pull the trigger this winter. The X build from Luna is only $4k or so. However, still over twice as heavy as the Kenevo, and no actual fitness benefit for the climbs. So while I have no interest in an actual moto, for crappy winter days I'll happily twist the E-Throttle on the Sur Ron, but as soon as it warms up I'm back on a bike. I'll actually own an E-Rig once they get below 40lb, so probably another 3 years or so.
  • 4 1
@muyguapa: great advice. but i don't ride MX trails, i ride technical mtb trails. you should try them. and my regular ride is much, much better on those types of trails. 'how active the suspension feels'? explain how the suspension is more active on an ebike.
  • 1 0
@LuvAZ: forget i said anything. your reply tells me that you've already made up your mind and i honestly do not have the ability to explain why increasing the ratio of sprung weight to unsprung weight will improve the feeling of the suspension through rough terrain.
  • 1 1
@LuvAZ: I agree I went off a drop and when I stopped pedaling the bike felt like it had an engine brake. It's not a good feeling.
We had more fun riding the E bikes uphill. I may rent or demo one but I'm 48 and still climb better than most of the younger guys I ride with uphill. I like to earn it plus I love my MTB.
  • 2 0
@Bozeman10: Be honest. Going off a drop doesn't feel any different, and if you felt a "brake" then either you were clutching your brake or the freehub has issues. You only feel the engine braking while pedaling above the cutoff speed, but even then, it's all your power. When the battery dies, that's a different engine braking feel, and it is harsh. I ride my eBike above the cutout speed regularly. My Garmin says I've hit 45 on my favorite speeding downhill.
  • 2 0
@Geochemistry: I'm 100% honest I was on a new Pivot during a demo. If you stopped pedaling the bike definitely would feel like it had an engine brake.
I may have been going over 20mph I didn't look down at the time.
  • 1 0
@Bozeman10: Yeah, that cut out above 20 can be pretty brutal while pedaling. I had a KTM/Bosch CX system (and have rented a Trek in Mammoth) that was the boat anchor you described. I currently have a Giant/Yamaha, and I've had limited experience on a Special-ed/Brose, but none (yet) with any Shimano systems. I can say that on spin-out descents stopping pedalling doesn't affect the gravity acceleration on any of those systems. The brand that can remove the mechanical drag above cut-out speeds and without electrical boosting will win the ebike market. There's a new motor, Fazua, with a removable motor/battery that comes close, but the battery power is really low.
  • 34 5
I had the chance to ride a Levo a few weeks back and sorry to say, but it was FUN.
It's hard not to have fun on these.

You put yourself in a different mind-set.
Your out to have fun and get as much DH in as possible. The new Levo's can get 8500ft on a single battery.
For example, my lunch ride takes 50 min. I did it in 25 on the Levo.
I put in 30% effort and it put in 70%.
Yes, I was that guy blowing by climbers. And I am sorry, not sorry.
But I had my HR up, I sweat and it actually rode pretty darn good on the DH.

Would this be my only ride?
Heck no
But when I become a dentist...I will def add it to my stable.

Get out and demo one...if you have a bad time, then something is wrong with you.

I ride dirt bikes and they are also fun. Just like e-bikes they are not bikes. making it a pain for people who are actually pedalling their way up hills is one of the reasons why we should be thinking about e-bikes and access
  • 7 1
@acrowe: but.. but.. you said dirt /bike/.
  • 2 2
@acrowe: I have a dirt bike, as well. I often ride alone. It's a drag when I go down something I can't get back up. If I had that e-bike, I'd ride the same places as my dirt bike (e.g., the Rainbow Trail) and I could carry it up and over any obstacles.
  • 3 2
@jacobyw: I fully support the idea of trail gates where you have to lift the bike over your head to access the trails.
  • 55 30
"The truth is: e-bikes never were mountain bikes. They were never designed to be human powered. Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to pedal one with a dead battery can attest to that. E-bike makers, however, convinced a lot of people that they actually were mountain bikes and explaining that lie, unfortunately, will fall upon mountain bikers, who will also bear the brunt of the inevitable user-conflicts and burnt bridges that will be left in the wake of electric-powered off-road cyclists." - Richard Cunningham, "History & Deception," Pinkbike, 9/30/16
  • 24 3
Show me where the user conflicts are happening.

Hikers won't notice wether it's an eBike or mountainbike. They may not be the same, but the only trail users who will notice are mountainbikers.

I think the main conflict (if any) will be between assisted and unassisted riders. I believe riders with assist should yield in both directions. Other than that who cares.

@mfoga: case in point: emtb vs mtb. other trail users will lump them together.

eBikes should yield to Mtb. Ride them wherever but yield to all non motorized traffic.

  • 7 5
@reverend27: My comment is mostly about the price. This isn't carbon and doesn't have the highest end component spec, yet it costs the same as a bike with BETTER suspension and an ICE.
  • 8 2
@hamncheez: You could compare a V10 instead if price is what you're mostly about. You can't even ride a V10 up a hill, so why would anyone get one when you could get a KTM. Or a Vespa. Or a snowmobile. Or how about 20 segway scooters, and change the world by getting everyone in your office to commute on one too!!

What would the moto guys say to someone jumping on an article about a KTM and asking why would anyone buy one, when you could buy a world cup level V10 instead?
  • 7 3
Fool. Pretty sure I wouldn't be allowed to turn up to my trailcentre on a motox bike. You honestly dont see the difference?
  • 8 6
 @kram: @mcozzy

A world cup level V10 has world cup level components on it. This is an aluminum frame with middle of the road suspension. Why does it cost the same as another bike with better suspension and a more complex, powerful motor, and a gearbox?
  • 8 0
Respect for linking to a 2-stroke. The 26" of the moto world!
  • 2 2
@gibspaulding: 2 strokes were always better. they only faded because of emissions regulations and the stupid class rule allowing for larger displacement 4 strokes to compete against smaller 2 strokes.
  • 9 2
@hamncheez: Here's another great question... why does a bottle of Yamazaki 1984 whisky cost $13,000USD. It doesn't even have a motor, and isn't anywhere near as high end as some other whiskies. You can get better weed for much less, and you don't even get a hangover, and you can smoke it walking down the street in Canada. Try doing that with a glass of whisky!
  • 3 1
@hamncheez: well I used to ride moto grew up riding one of guy Cooper's Suzuki 250 that was given to my uncle by Guy. I was 11 and weighed 100lbs.

Moto is just more dangerous and difficult to transport. I could go on and on why I ride mtb over moto now.

Mostly I'm old and work for a living and want to keep my risks reasonable.
  • 10 0
@hamncheez Neato moto. Add gas, load it up into the truck (add gas) and drive an hour to moto trails.

Or i could just self shuttle laps from my house on something that's way more fun (to me) and still get cardio.

They ain't the same buddy. Pretending eMTB is a 2-stoke moto is even dumber than pretending an eMTB is same as MTB.
  • 3 1
@dontcoast: I bike on moto trails that are just a few miles from my house. Get something like a yz 426 street legal and just ride up to your trails. Thats not the point, though is it? Price is determined by supply and demand. However, there is wiggle room based on things like elasticity, asymmetric knowledge, bargaining power, close substitutes, etc. the point isn't moto vs mountain biking, they are two different but related sports. The point is why does an aluminum chassis bike with a weak motor and mid range suspension cost more than a bike with a more powerful motor, more advanced drivetrain, and more advanced suspension?
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: fair point regarding price - although both economy of scale and the much tighter tolerances required for lighter weight, smaller bicycle parts certainly are factors.

Some of us don't have moto legal trails that close.
Some of us prefer less noise than a moto.

You seem to be switching arguments from:
a) why would someone spend $X for any one particular thing when they could simply choose another that you, in your opinion, deem to be a more direct line to tickling the pleasure senses, to:

b) why the hell is a bicycle that isn't the top of the line (despite being one of the best in its class) the same price as something else that is kinda sorta but not really similar but in your mind more expensive to build because OMG ICE!!

Which not so roughly translates to:
a) Why buy a $500 phone when a $500 laptop has way more power, and can do way more things, has a keyboard, has usb, expandable etc. At least you can take either of these on a plane. Unlike a dirtbike.
or
b) How can a bicycle cost as much as _________ (fill in the blank). Now, just because you're ok that V10 costs as much as a moto doesn't get you off the hook for asking this question about a bicycle that also has a motor.
And since we've been dealing with non-mtb'ers for decades asking b), it's quite dissatisfying to have to deal with an MTBer on this same issue. At least you can now point when they say 'where's the motor'.
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: that looks neato. also it's still a moto which i cannot ride on my trails.

And in case you missed it: "what value does an $8K bike bring" has been the mantra of every non mountain biker ever that heard someone bought an $8K bike. Been involved in this conversation since 1991 from the other side when I told a guy I would never ever spend $1600 on a stupid bicycle the week before my first MTB ride, when I heard my friend paid that much. Instead of arguing he invited me to go riding, and 2 weeks later I put a deposit on a $2500 bike. Maybe you should go ride the bike in the article instead of repeating 3 decades worth of nonsense. Right after you drop me a courtesy down arrow again of course.

my original comment is still sitting in positive upvotes, baby!!

The point is this what is going on with manufacturing if it costs so much to produce an ebike with middle end suspension! You can buy a comparable YT tues for $3k, and i find it hard to suggest its $5k for the motor.

The thing is is that the shuttle truck is a distinct subculture. It is a style, a way of life.

The big truck, which is also their work truck, as most work construction; the liftgate pad; the METAL MULITIA stickers on the back window; the flatbills sticking out the side windows; the Korn blaring from the speakers; the Monster Energy drinks in the cooler--an e-bike will not displace that.  Wow so many ebike haters on Pinkbike lol. I'm assuming most of you guys here never ridden one or even on planning to buy one. I'm talking about class 1 emtb's and not the diy mtb. I have a Levo and love it. Feels very natural when riding. It does have some extra weight, but I only notice it on the turns. I don't have the luxury of being able to go ride for hours. On my regular bike it would take me at least 1.5 hours to 2 hours to complete a ride. On my Levo I can do the same loop in half the time. It's the climb that gets me. I've been riding for about a year now. Still not a strong climber and still have a long ways to get in shape, but at least I don't have to take many stops or be dead tired once I make it to the top on my ebike. I can still pedal normally with the motor off. Pedals like a normal bike. Climbs ok but not as bad has my other bike. It is heavier, but it's like comparing to a heavier rider. Having an ebike allows to me to go out and ride more. That's why we ride emtb's. I can only go faster up hill than the other guys, but not by a lot. I've even had guys on gravel bikes out climb me on some hills. I ride for fun just to get out. It's the Strava Queen's in my opinion that takes it too far lol

If you want to be a strong climber the way to do it is to focus on climbing not to minimize the effort with power assist. maybe just do a shorter trail and actually pedal. I could probably keep up with Nino Schurter if I rode a moto x (he might still get me on the hills Smile ) but I still actually propel my bike using the pedals (even if I go slowly or not that far) because that is what riding a bike is.
  • 3 4
Good on you for admitting that you ride one. Most people can't admit that they're slow and out of shape.
  • 6 0
I’m not in the market for an e-bike but if I was this would be right at the top of the list. It just makes sense. A DH bike w/ pedal assist is exactly the kind of e-mountain bike that makes sense in a lot of areas.

Imagine being able to open a Coast Gravity Park like facility minus the need for stupid shuttle trucks or lifts. That’s a game changer. Wanna do more than 4 laps in a day? Swap your dead battery for a new one at the bottom. Environmental impact is way lower than building lifts or running shuttles, you get a bit of a workout on the way up and a good one on the way down, it’s a ton of fun.

What’s the downside? Oh right, there isn’t one.

Battery to make the gears go up and down the cassette better, great idea. Battery to make the seatpost go up and down, great idea. Battery to adjust the compression on suspension a million times a second, great idea. Battery to make the cranks spin in a circle easier..... how dare they.
  • 1 0
Agree. All these haters haven't actually ridden one. The eMTB is more impressive when you think about what it makes *possible*. Not sure how many of you have actually tried pedaling a DH bike up a hill, let alone a mountain. I test rode an early Specialized eDH down a ski hill and then turned around and pedaled it back up. I was still huffing and puffing because it only gives back what you put in, but that literally wouldn't have been possible to do on a bike with that amount of DH ability without the assist.

My only issue is with the sticker shock, but I think when the price comes down they will be a boon for smaller bike parks. The shuttle replacement idea is a legitimate thing.

Curious to see when regenerative braking/coasting appears on e-bikes (realizing there's pitfalls associated with this). Wonder if, for a downhill rig, they could have suspension-actuated regen? That would at least force everyone with an e-bike to ride black diamonds all the time Smile
  • 1 0
Hell or just pedaling...don't all the stationary bikes at the gym power their electronics by pedal power?
Hold up guys forgot to charge my bike last night, got an extra cigarette lighter handy?
  • 3 0
Regenerative braking would require a hub mounted motor/generator, or a gearbox at the BB with a direct drive to the rear wheel. Bad things would happen to a derailleur if you tried to put tension on the bottom side of a chain.
  • 1 0
Won't happen on eMTB - works on direct-drive hub motors only. (the really heavy ones like on Stromer/BionX/RadRover/ShengYi/MAC)

Plus would only make a noticeable difference on really really long downhills.

Save it for urban e-mopeds, that tech is mediocre for class 1 even on pavement bicycles.
  • 5 1
ebikes are here to stay, regardless of anyone's personal opinion. It's a growing market. They will get lighter and the batteries will get smaller. They will also get cheaper over time. I think they have their time and place - mostly for commuting or for older riders. I wouldn't hesitate to get one in 15-20 years when my knees fall apart. The trail access issues are a problem, but everyone's going to have to figure that out because there will only be more of these things. Personally, I don't see any real difference between ebikes and shuttling when it comes to trail access. Earning your turns naturally thins out the crowd and it's part of the sport.
  • 4 0
In some places this bike makes a lot of sense. Locally there are some trails that are open to dirt bikes. They are a massive climb with a fun descent. Dirt bikers love the climb. Cross country guys love killing themselves for weird reasons I don't understand so they climb it. Everybody else doesn't touch these trails. Nobody wants to push their bike up that far. With this bike I would ride that trail. This is would be amazing. It would be like having helicopter access to unbelievable stuff. But I can't afford this bike, so I will just continue to pedal other trails. And before you tell me just climate and stop being such a pansy remember that I said nobody climbs this except the XC crew. If you are an XC rider that's cool buddy but I don't care. I'm not interested in doing enormous climbs that take 6 hours.
  • 4 0
Judging by the logic on here people with cassettes over 32 teeth, should yield on the climbs and people with downhill bikes should let people with less travel go first!

What happens when a faster rider regardless of bike comes along? Should they have to stay behind others who are slower?

The bike still needs to be pedalled, so it's a mountain bike. if you are doing twice if not 3 times the distance you are still riding aren't you?

I think a massive amount of people on here forget that a lot of the world doesn't have public vehicle access into the woods to shuttle. Outside of the US fuel appears to be a hell of a lot more expensive. Fuel to an uplift venue of say 50 pounds split over 2 riders, 20 to 30 for the uplift day each plus food on the road/at the venue you are easily looking at 60 quid each which certainly doesn't take long to get the difference made up between ebike and none ebike. i think that the difference between my Kenevo and an Enduro of the same spec was only about 800 thats only 14 uplift days split over say the 3 years that we would mostly likely keep the bike.

I wouldn't have experienced half the stuff we did without the E-bike.  I tried the last version of the this bike, but it was way to heavy. I actually think the Turbo Levo was more fun on most trails because you can flick it around and manual and pop. The Kenevo was just to heavy and didn’t like to leave the ground. I think the new levo can be made around 44lbs. Almost 10 lbs lighter than this. An “e-dh” bike sounds pretty cool to me, but this is likely way off on a true dh bikes capability. When they make a sub 40 lb e-dh bike I think it will be a little easier to justify the expense and the dirty looks, at least for me. Then again I still shuttle my trail bike occasionally.

If your into e bikes, this looks pretty rad. It would be perfect for my local trails! They are directional trails with a paved road climb back up. I'm not a huge fan of long climbs in general and a long road climb on a heavy mtb is just terrible... This would definitely be a welcome change lol
  • 5 3
Looks like a Sess............? Nope, no comments even needed here. Just laughter. Lots of laughter and face slapping. I can hear the Big S now, "this is going to blow their minds!!" Well, good show boys and girls. Mind officially blown. Someone's gonna have to come clean up this mess....
  • 15 1
Did you have an accident while your owner was away as well? I have learned that it is best to hide the evidence under the rug if you didn't do the running while going thing I often do.
  • 4 2
Been loving my 2019 Kenevo Comp. Just got back from Whistler and it's a huge game changer if you want to experience as many of the trails as possible. Even rode it in the park and it was not too bad. But it was really the perfect machine for checking out what those guys have created up there. Gotta say thanks to anyone who helped build the trails... amazing.
  • 5 2
Interesting idea but I still like the idea of a shuttle truck. No pedaling on the way up and a lighter bike on the way down, don't really see this as a better option where shuttle roads are available.
  • 7 0
Well, since you actually need two trucks and at least one other person to actually do it.
  • 2 2
@Chuckolicious: That's how shuttling works. If you want to do it solo that's not shuttling anymore, that's just called riding. Was the point to say that with this ebike you can now "shuttle" but solo? I still like the group setting, shuttle trails are typically on the rowdy side and being in a group is much safer plus you can bring all your pads and full-blown full-face since you aren't worried about climbing. And who doesn't love rallying the retrieval vehicle like you're on Pike's Peak?
  • 1 0
@highfivenwhiteguy: Yea, I was being a bit pedantic. And yea, kinda the whole point of the article, and the headline, is now you can leave the truck(s) at home, solo or group. I'm a shuttle junkie when I go to OR and NoCal, but would be cool to session Mt Hough or Alsea Falls without being at the mercy of others.
  • 2 0
Good looking circuit board in there. Lots of heatsink connection to the casing, full testpoint coverage, and at least some gold plating. That part should last a long time. No idea about what looks like plastic planetary gears...or, you know, how it rides.
  • 1 0
And belts. Brose motor = quietest available, also belt failure rate is way higher than (noiser) metal+nylon geared options on the market
  • 2 0
Amazing how they claim to have created the same or better axle path as the new Enduro without all those extra links and a traditional main pivot position. So much marketing BS great eBike tho, just preferred the look of the old XWing frame design.
  • 1 0
I just feel like the whole e-bike thing is for riders who aren't strong. Sorry, and I know I'm going to get hate, but what other explanation is there? (here come the excuses, I mean explanations) I am a bike shop mechanic and have been riding for over twenty years, so I'm not the typical rider, but I have also ridden over forty miles at a time in the mountains around Colorado Springs... on a single speed, so no motor is needed if you are willing to try. AMHO

Does it have a car power outlet, so I can light my joint, or charge my AXS stuff?

i HATE e-bikes but honestly the DH fork model... I could seriously get behind. Big Grin That looks rad! and would be sweet!!!

Everything about this amazing except the Black Diamond tires. They're garbage. I've destroyed four of these tires on the rear on the new Evo.

Why would I want to filter out eMTB content, then I wouldn't know where to complain.
  • 5 0
I'd love to demo one. This could make a lot of sense.
  • 2 0
The old kenevo was almost there. This is there. Propper eDH rig. With those wheelbases its now too much bike for my twisty enduro trails in the woods. This beast has been built for WC type tracks!
  • 7 6
You have 180 lb nfl players getting hit by 350 lb players and 260 lb line backers at the same time. 180 lbs vs 610 lbs. Grow a set of balls, if you're scared of getting hit by a fat guy on an e-bike. America is suppose to be about freedom. You have trails that have 1,000 lb horses on them....aka multi-use trails. Pussy generation! I'll take my e-bike with a 50mm gun please!
  • 5 4
For me I ride my bike for both fun and reward. Getting to the top of the hill sweaty, excited, mind cleared from the weeks stress. Riding the trail with a light responsive bike yet still super capable and eventually reaching the bottom having known that I have powered myself and rewarded myself with that experience. Aside from my phone in my pocket, I’m out in nature and away from the world. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.
They have their place for the older generation or people with low fitness or disability, but don’t try and sell them to the mass market. They are bloody ugly, heavy and completely against the principle of a bicycle. Thankfully, the sport is driven by competition and the likes of the EWS and World Cups will not support these bikes at pro level.
  • 3 1
This echos my sentiments exactly, To me mountain biking encompasses fitness and fun, To eliminate one of those aspects would diminish the gratification i get from it. When i'm old and my ability to maintain fitness drops off, an ebike would only then make sense to me to sustain the aspect of fun.
  • 1 0
hates on ebikes, names gravity competition as "not supportive of ebikes" ... um wait what? did you mean XC?

because dh is all assisted uplift and enduro features plenty and doesn't time climbs...
  • 2 1
E Bikes enable many to enjoy their riding more. So that's good.
But this bike has three HUGE FAULTS.
1. the chainstay is bloody long. So this bike will feel like the cheap sleds of E bikes I rode years ago. Such a shame.
2. The reach starts at 445mm. This is way too long for many people. The bike is longer than many DH machines. Bizzarre.
3. It weighs KILOS more than a Pivot Shuttle. And at that price? wow.

I have never commented on bikes here in a negative way, but building a bike this long (and this heavy for the price) is a very poor decision.
  • 1 0
Just like before, still too heavy. Like the original cellular phones battery technology needs to get smaller, lighter and more powerful. Get these rides down around the mid 40’s in weight. Then they will get my attention. A weight where it won’t feel like you’re riding an anvil on the way down. Until that time no sale.
  • 1 0
Or you could keep your old banger DH rig and buy a fleet of roombas to drag you up to the trail. Then they could make their own way back to their charging stations on the back of the ute while you get to ride down the trail on a proper DH bike.

Bonus: cleanest damn fire roads/access trails in the country.

There'd probably be money left over to dress them up like little dinosaurs or baby seals or something too.
  • 1 0
Please explain to me how is it that the 2020 Enduro and the new Demo both have completely different frame and very complicated linkages but the 2020 Kenevo seems to use nearly the same frame and linkages and frame design as the 2019 Stumpjumper to accomplish nearly identical Axle Path and a very good progression comparison?

Just by those 2 graphs, IRL does the Kenevo suspension behave nearly identical to the Enduro & Demo on the trail (besides the obvious diffs in travel, steer angle, etc)?

But you know what would be even better? If we can sort of take this bike and mod the motor to be able to use something that doesn't require charging. Maybe a liquid of some type that would produce energy that can produce a lot of power in a small package. And because you'll have more power, you need some way to modulate and control that power like an accelerator pedal on a car. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think a machine like that would really take off....
  • 7 2
The motor already exists. It's called human body.

 @rkstar: whoosh.

@panaphonic: No. I get it. Thank you.

Some of you should remember that there are worse things to hate than eMTB's. We all crash the same.

Anyway. I would buy this. But I am poor. Frown

Are plus size tires disappearing slowly ?
I think it's the second ebike equipped with 2.6" where you'd've expect some 2.8" just 6 months earlier.
  • 1 0
I like the plus size on my 2018 TL, super traction to go with the super power. on wet DH trails they rule.
odd they don't provide a flip chip or anything. ?

Ok, my beef with e-bikes that nobody is talking about is everywhere that is not a bike park requires volunteer hours to maintain the trails. Bikes like this just put that much more wear and tear on trails because of the numerous laps riders can throw down on a given outing. The natural power limitation of humans on conventional bicycles is what keeps a limit on the damage. If you are wondering how this will play out go and check out any OHV wasteland and see how those areas generally look. I assure you, I am not being curmudgeonly about this. The future will be trashed trails or strict limitations on the kinds of bikes that can be used after trail organizations get fed up with constantly repairing their thrashed trails. I honestly have mixed feelings about e-bikes. They have their place in the world, but the current trail infrastructure (at least in the US) does not really support e-bikes very well. Time will tell, but for now, trail overuse is an issue that I see trail organizations having to deal with.
  • 11 1
Plus if your reason for riding an ebike is that you don't have enough time to ride the lap you want to ride without a motor then its fairly unlikely that you are spending a lot of time on trailwork
  • 3 4
One could argue that trail builders would more easily be able to access/ maintain trails WITH tools on an E-bike. I also wonder if the damaged from an E-bike is more on the climbs. If anything, power output is smoother/ constant vs the irregular power output of pedalling a regular bike (1 climb lap vs 1 climb lap, not including the extra laps you can get on an e-bike).
  • 10 1
@acrowe: plenty of trailbuilders i've met (legal advocacy group or rogue) use ebikes to shlep tools and supplies to the trailwork area.
  • 5 3
Water does far and away the bulk of trail damage than bikes. Plus, if you have an eBike, you don't need much slope, so even less erosion issues.
  • 4 0
@damientheo: Yep, and if there's a fire road, the e-bikes can just be told to take that. They did that at Bolton Valley here in VT. Not to mention a bike with an extra 20 lbs of weight is no different on the downs than a 200lb guy vs a 180lb guy on the same bike.
  • 10 0
If your trails are built so poorly that a couple extra laps is going to hurt them then you need better trail builders.
  • 1 2
@d-man: If it were only „a couple of extra laps” nobody would complain, I guess.

I don‘t know about Canada, but here in Europe, with a much higher population density, and a lot of trails already highly frequented by hikers, climbers, horse riders, and mountain bikers, a new group of trail users will in most likelihood not do any good. Especially, since one ebiker tends to equal rather not one but at least two mountain bikers, because current batteries, still getting bigger with every new generation of ebikes, allow them to simply ride more. So, yes, I see trails around here deteriorating faster than before. And trails that are a little more remote and were ridden infrequently in the past, because most people couldn’t be bothered to put in the extra effort to get there, are now ridden on a daily basis. Land owners start complaining, conflicts over matters of access and trail usage, where some fragile truce had been reached are erupting again... yes, it might still be a good thing if ebikes get more people outdoors, but quite often I’m struggling to see it that way...
  • 6 0
@FuzzyL: so by your logic trails should have a maximum number of users, after the number has been reached trail closed for the day. What a joke, you are just another whiner making up reasons why ebikes should not be used.
  • 3 0
Come on this is weak, just because you can do 2 laps instead of 1 you think there is more wear and tear? What about a tour group of 10 regular bikes that show up? Is that not the same wear and tear on a trail that usually only gets 3 riders a day? You can not compare OHV trails to ebikes on MTB trails because e bikes do not damage the trail like atv or motos do.
  • 1 1
@d-man: I’m not talking about ten bikers showing up at a trailhead, but about 200 people riding a trail over the weekend where there used to be 50. Yes, the difference is not all up to ebikers, but they make up an over proportional part of it. And yes, it does make a difference on trail wear.
  • 2 1
@FuzzyL: if the damage is not all e bikes then its not an ebike issue is it. Stop trying to link trail issues with ebikes, It's just not true. If your area usage has increased in total rider visits by that amount it's obvious that the area and or sport is popular and the trail network needs expansion. Not an easy thing to do but economics and political pressure is what the extra numbers using the trails will bring.

Now if only Specialized would release non-ebike versions of this very bike. Think they were called 'freeride bikes' once upon a time, according to legends and gospels.

The best of both worlds, a motorbike for the climbs and bike that’s easy to shred down narrow trails! I’ll trade my dirt bike and mountain bike for this.

To the surprise of no one, e-bikes are looking more and more like motorcycles every year. When are they going to cut the bullshit of “pEdAl AsSIsT”. If the bike is putting out 3/4 of the power it isn't assisting you, you’re just marginally extending its range.

Slow, expensive electric dirtbike. f*ckin lame.
  • 14 16
 Never tried an ebike right?

Its not easier to pedal uphill, because you have assistance, you’re juste going faster and you do twice as much distance.
  • 16 2
What are you talking about? It just looks like a mountain bike...
  • 5 3
 I disagree on this one
  • 13 3
The stupid things people will talk themselves into. It looks like a mountain bike a pretty sweet one at that.
  • 11 2
Have you ever even seen a motorycle?
  • 4 0
@SamRouss: this doesn't even make logical sense. At any given forward speed a portion of the effort is being provided by the motor. Of course its easier to go uphill at any given speed.

"From a distance, the Kenevo strikes a profile that looks like a non-motorized bike"

Is that distance... several miles? It looks gopping awful, like any bike with a motor bolted to the bottom bracket. Painting those bits black does little to improve things.

  • 1 0
@Armalite: yeah. I could afford this is have one in the stable. There are dirt bike trails that have 5 thousand for climbs. I don't want to do that. If rather have one of these. I'd still ride my Rocky mountain altitude for normal trails, but there are a lot of trails where this would be better.

I think there is a war coming between the ebike and the e-motorcycle, as the lines get blurrier between the two all the time. KTM pulling the e-Freeride from the US market and the failure of Alta Motors seems to be pointing in the e-mountain bikes favor. Add to that the reality that cultural bias has been attempting to kill the ICE moto for decades-emtb, get used to our new overlords...
