First Look: 2021 Vitus Escarpe & Sommet

Oct 22, 2020
by Mike Kazimer

Vitus has completely revamped their Escarpe and Sommet bikes for 2020, and the result is a fully modern lineup with very impressive prices. For those who aren't familiar, Vitus is the house brand of Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles, and it's that consumer direct sales model that makes it possible to create something like the Escarpe CS, a full suspension carbon / aluminum trail bike with a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain and a Marzocchi Z2 fork for $2,500 USD.

The Escarpe is the trail / all-mountain model, with 140mm of rear travel and a 150mm fork, while the Sommet is the enduro-focused vesion, with 162mm or 170mm of travel depending on the wheel size, and a 170mm fork.
Vitus Escarpe Details

• Wheelsize: 27.5" or 29"
• Travel: 140mm (r) / 150mm (f)
• Carbon front triangle, aluminum swingarm
• 65° head angle
• Chainstay length: 435mm (27.5") / 440mm (29")
• Weight: 32.6 lb / 14.7kg (CRX model, size L)
• Price range: $2,500 - $4,200 USD

The bikes were both designed at the same time, and there's a good reason they bear more than a passing resemblance to each other – they share the same carbon front triangle. That allowed Vitus to keep costs down, and by using a different shock link they could alter the amount of travel and suspension behavior to suit each bike's intention.

Both models are available with either 27.5” or 29” wheels, in sizes S thru XL.

Frame Details

The overall frame shape is the most noticeable change on the new Escarpe and Sommet - it no longer looks like it sat out in the sun too long and started to melt. The curvy tube shapes have been straightened out, giving it a much more pleasing look, at least to my eyes. The shock is now fixed to a brace that runs between the down tube and seat tube.

That seat tube now has more room for longer travel dropper posts, and it should be possible to run a fully inserted 150mm post on a small, a 170 on a medium, and a 200mm post on the large and XL sizes.

There's internal routing for the derailleur, dropper post, and rear brake line, although the brake and derailleur housing do still emerge and run underneath the bottom bracket. I've still never had any issues with this routing configuration – most of the time a chainring will take the hit before the housing - but it does open the door to the potential of a pinched line more than running the housing over the bottom bracket would.

SRAM's Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) also makes an appearance on the new frames, a welcome trend that should help finding a replacement hanger much less of a hassle in the future. Other details include plenty of room for a water bottle inside the front triangle, clearance for 2.5” rear tires on the 29” frames and 2.6” tires on the 27.5” frames, a threaded bottom bracket, ISCG 05 tabs, and downtube and chainstay protection.

Geometry

Predictably, the Escarpe underwent the longer and slacker treatment, but Vitus didn't dive off the deep end - the figures fall right in line with what we're seeing from multiple companies. With a 150mm fork the bike has a 65-degree head angle, which can be steepened by half a degree using the flip chip on the lower shock mount. The seat tube angle has been steepened to 77.5-degrees, a 3-degree change from the previous version. Chainstay lengths are the same across all sizes, at 435mm for the 27.5" bikes and 440mm for the 29" versions.

Suspension Design

A look at the old vs. new suspension graphs shows that there have been a several fairly significant changes. The leverage rate of the bikes' Horst Link layout is much more consistent, and the regressive hump at the beginning of the stroke has been eliminated. That change should help make for a more uniform feel through the entirety of the travel, and deliver improved end-stroke ramp up. The amount of anti-squat has actually been reduced slightly, although it still sits around 100% at sag to help prevent unwanted bob during pedaling.

Good to see less and less shitty SX eagle

And threaded bottom bracket also. YT Capra base model has aluminum frame and SX crap, but price isn't much different than the base Sommet, which has carbon frame and solid Shimano shifting.

Still routing cables and hoses under the BB... Dumb...

@scottlink: I know! What about rocks?! Whenever I smash my bb I'll be happy my brake fluid doesn't all spray out!
  • 62 3
@healthy-not-sick-biker: you’ve legitimately smashed your BB? So you’ve taco’d your chainring so badly it’s crunched over and you impacted your bottom bracket harshly? I wanna see this!
  • 8 2
@joedave: Well I have to admit I've hit above the bb but never on it.
  • 9 5
@joedave: It's more about the front tire kicking up loose rocks that hit in that area. None of my bikes have had that routing but I have put dents in al frames in that region and tons of paint chips too. If it can dent a frame... it could be enough to crush a hose.
  • 10 2
@kcy4130: And yet even though you've put dents and chips in that region you've never "crushed a hose"...

This is one of those things everybody complains about but never has any firsthand experience with. It's always "a friend" or "saw it on the trail"...

Your chainring naturally protects cables down there. MOST of us are NOT trying to dent or crack our BB/Downtubes... "IF" it was enough of a problem on the prototype bikes don't you think Vitus with it's parent company connections could EASILY get a bulk order deal on or just have their own lower Taco Bash guard made up? It's a piece of plastic and a couple of bolts, if they needed to add that to keep warranty claims down I think they'd have added it already...
  • 2 0
 @DoubleCrownAddict: water bottle holder too.
  • 3 1
@scottlink: You should come check out the ruined 4K frames in shop from over the BB routing that has eaten the frames.
  • 3 4
@joedave: you do realise the chainring is on on one side right.

@jclnv: Post em... Be interesting to see.

I have personally been on a group ride with someone, and also know one of my good friends in a separate incident; where they have had rocks flick up and cut rear brake hoses under the BB.
  • 1 0
@stiingya: I think that was sarcasm.
  • 1 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: LOL woosh right over my head like the bb routing... Smile
  • 1 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: It's interesting that we get video for FridayFails every week showing numerous chance accidents happening. But even though 98% of us carry a cell phone with a camera apparently no one ever thinks to take a picture of one of these "incidents"?

I'm not saying it never happens, but I am saying every time this subject comes up the issue is blown out of proportion.
  • 2 0
@stiingya: firsthand experience right here. I've got a crushed shift cable housing underneath the bottom bracket of my Devinci Marshall. I took the hit on a narrow shark fin rock that slipped right past my chainring on the edge of a small drop. Luckily she still shifts just fine now that I've squeezed the housing back to a rough round with pliers.

On one hand, it sucks to see the crushed housing during the roughly two times per year that I look down yonder, and I know I'll have to stop being lazy and replace it when I go to sell the bike. On the other hand, I've always wondered if that housing saved me from a cracked carbon bottom bracket shell. I think of it as an extra bit of frame protection.

All about the brand ain't it. Vitus is basically Nukeproof but with slightly different(?) geo.

Sommet CRX vs.Nukeproof Mega Factory - very similar spec. Mega has a carbon rear triangle, not sure if that's a benefit or negative!!

@VitusBikes: We cant Escarpe the puns
  • 6 0
Yep, they look great. Well designed and specced for the money.

If I had to complain about something, maybe the lack of an all aluminum base model? I have a brother looking in the sub 2k range and an alu version of this coming in at 2-2.2k would be the clear leader for what he wants on paper.

That being said, I suspect that they wouldn't save much money if they were just doing it for one bike and I expect making them all with carbon front ends helps keep those prices down due to economies of scale.
  • 6 0
And CRC usually sells them for below those MSRP prices....at least when I log-in from Canada (maybe because I don't have to pay VAT?)

In-fact, all 2021 Escarpe models CR, CRS and CRX trims are showing up at "17% off" for me already...

The base CR....all-new Carbon Front Triangle, Deore 12 speed, Marzocchi/RockShox suspension, WTB i30 wheel, Maxxis Maxx Terra Tires...for $2,900. Even if i paid $900 for DHL prepaid duty express shipping with taxes/duties, that is still phenomenal value for $3,800 to my door (which is probably on the ridiculously high side for shipping, taxes and duties).
  • 2 0
@VitusBikes: absolute f*cking kudos on the cheapest builds . they have premium looks and great specification for the £££ Im sure base models will sell out suoer fast

@cagiN: No longer available through Wiggle and Chain Reaction won't allow add to cart.

Would love a review, but the spec seems really sorted on these. Good to see they've sorted the geometry from the last Sommet, as that was looking a bit dated. However the Seat tubes are perhaps a touch long. The M with a 443 reach is quite short, So I would look to Size up to a L with the 471mm reach, but a 440mm seat tube and 170mm dropper doesn't work for me.

However still have to applaud a Carbon frame with SLX and Lyrik for under £3k
  • 41 0
Also got to add, love that they have Specced DD rear with Maxxterra and EXO+ front tyre with Maxxgrip.
  • 9 0
@melonhead1145: this is totally perfect and should be mandatory.
  • 5 0
@melonhead1145: Big Enduro Bike requires proper tyres
  • 3 1
@chillescarpe: Yes they should. The amount that ship with either own brand rubbish, even on high end bikes (Trek/Specialized), or with both tyres in EXO Maxxterra is too high. This is the perfect Combo IMO.

Those bikes look really good. I personally think they look even better than Nukeproof bikes. I know Rob Warner rides them but do they actually have athletes competing in the EWS?
  • 6 0
yeap, you have some irish and northern irish riders competing on different categories on the EWS with Vitus bikes, from Vitus FirstTracks Team and also from Biking.ie team.

I came here to read the comments from people who complain about a bike they never even intended to even buy in the first place. I'll have to look elsewhere. No complaints for vitus!
  • 8 0
Maybe Rob Warner will be able to smile during the next press shoot with these updates.
  • 6 1
@VitusBikes are there going to be alloy models coming too? I have a Sommet for my son and it's been amazing for 3ish years, he needs a bigger bike now but a carbon model is a little too $ for the boy thrasher if you know what I mean even though these are phenomenal carbon prices. Any alloy models coming?

  • 4 0
Looks great. And a bit like an Airdrop Edit V3 with how the shock attaches to the frame. Not keen on under BB routing, but that’s a nit-pick at these prices. Sensible, progressive without going too far geo too. Bikes for most riders I’d say.
  • 7 0
I have a 2018 Sommet. Absolute beast with high end equipment at the price of low end model of famous brands
  • 4 0
Vitus Nailed it at least on the paper, finally someone ditching SX/NX combo in favor of Deore; Not sure about us market since it should be taxed here, and Vitus do not have dealership, however EU / UK get sweet deals for 2021

I am one of the few in the US that owns a Vitus. I bought an Escarpe VRX last year and it is a great AM bike with top shelf components. Like Rob Warner said Vitus is a well kept secret in mountain biking.

  • 1 0
Me too! But I still haven't decided between a 2021 Trance 3 and this. They're spec'd pretty similar with similar price points and both would work for my riding style.
  • 1 0
@bikingrolo: I have much easier choice because Giant in my country set much higher price for Trance X3. Additionally Trance X3 have worse spec IMO, RS gold 35 (not compatibile with Charger damper), SRAM SX (total crap), etc.
  • 1 0
@ziolek79: I'm looking at the regular Trance 29 3. I would agree with you for the 2020 Trance but for 2021 Giant fixed many of the spec issues. It comes with a Marzocchi Z2, Deore drivetrain, and the same brakes as the Escarpe. They're nearly specced identically except for the in-house brand names, and the Giant costs slightly less. There's a few things I like better about the Vitus like the threaded bottom bracket and the extra bit of travel, but the ability see/ride a Giant before buying might trump that. It's great to have good options at reasonable prices!
  • 1 0
@bikingrolo: yep, you have right in terms of regular Trance 3. I thought you are talking about Trance X 3, as this is a comparable bike to Escarpe (135/150 vs 140/150). Regular Trance 29 is a completely different bike (I've ridden it). Trance X3 2021 has poor spec unfortunately and is more expensive by approx 250USD in my country.

I have the sommet crs for almost a year nowe, whats upgraded , fork internals charger 2.1 and dualairpiston ,rearshock internals added four tokens, everything else is pretty good. I upgraded the slx cranks tot xt ,chainring to a xtr 30t. upgraded the M1900 rearwheel hub from pawl to a 30 ish ratchet and the disc roters and brakes to Magura MT7 the shimano SLX brakes are crap, wandering bite point. all shimano 4 pots have that. For heavy riders M1900 wheelset is pretty solid little flex. The bike climbs like a heavy xc bike fast for a bike this heavy. should bougth the 27,5 bike though. the wheels are to big for me but wil get used to it I think! Seatpost is crap, that's the only thing I would replace in the future. The bike handeling is swift and steers great ad highspeed corners pretty well for a bike this long and with 29nr wheels. you need little more muscle in comparison to a hardtail xc bike but comparerd to my old Be-one Woodbumble its a featherweigth.
  • 3 0
Impressive bikes. Look great, solid builds, and reasonable prices. They will sell fast. The only thing that would make it even better would be a frame only option.
  • 4 0
That is a clean looking bike, really like the lines and the linkage design!
  • 1 0
Cable placement, never had a bike with cables there, so don't know if they would get smashed from a poorly executed hop up. But I do know that if cables are not placed well they can cut into the frame, from moving with the suspension around bottom bracket area. It happened on my meta, and every now and then the cable outer would split. It was fixable but something to keep an eye on when you get a new bike.

a lovely Sight for sore eyes
  • 3 0
I hate that I like it. Excellent job on the Geo. Spec per $ is awesome too.
  • 3 0
Anyone gonna Review this compared to the Privateer 161 because they are around the same price range

That's about par for the course for 2020 Pandemic Bike sales:

Vitus Escarpe 29 CR Mountain Bike 2021 - All options are out of stock
Vitus Escarpe 29 CRS Mountain Bike 2021 - All options are out of stock

I have a 2016 carbon Sommet and it might as well be from a different universe. Weighs 28 lbs! Non boost, 23mm stock rims and a little short in the cockpit for a medium. Still a great bike though. Definitely more trail than enduro despite the enduro badge at the time. Very interested in these new ones but besides the added weight, the stand over appears noticeably taller than the competitors I'm looking at, all with lower sloping top tubes. Is stand over not much of a thing for most riders these days? Or am I misjudging the looks. Also gets a B grade on looks vs the competition (Propain, Transition) but A+ on value which is to be expected (and much appreciated).
  • 1 0
Dear Vitus thanks for the great prize....@dolores wants to know if he/she can have the Escarpe 29er instead as the xc and enduro slots are already filled in their garage. If not he/she wont bother entering.
  • 2 0
Nice. The Escapre is pretty much a nukeproof reactor but with steeper seat angle....
  • 2 1
 different suspension
  • 7 8
The bikes look like great value, but.... why would any modern bike designer route the rear mech cable and rear brake hose under the bottom bracket shell? Right in the path of a big rock cutting the brake hose or mangling the rear shifter cable?

There is no need to route the cable/hose under the BB, this could easily be over the top of the BB shell and through the chainstay. I really wonder what the design decision was that made them do it like it is.
  • 20 0
On my bike is same, never had problem.
  • 12 0
My 2012 slayer has essentially the exact same routing. In 8 years and over 10000 miles i havent had a single issue. Quite simple to add some protection under there too.
  • 3 0
Usually your chainring (hopefully the bashguard below it) hits the rock before the bottom bracket shell. Anything is possible though.
  • 2 0
I have the same routing on my Intense Spider. Never had a problem, but I still think it's a poor design decision. Still, good looking bikes. And price point is impressive.
  • 2 0
In my direct experience, the under BB routing can result in a housing cut failure but once I put on a protective vinyl tubing sleeve issue was solved. Meanwhile my other bike (Ripmo) has over the BB routing and therefore an acute angle into the CS. This summer I experienced the same issue as so many other Ripmo users: nearly impossible to get old housing removed.
  • 3 1
Same routing on my 2017 Transition Patrol, and I can confirm that it sucks. No issues, necessarily, but you have to be really careful about having enough cable slack for the suspension to work correctly. It's also just an inferior way to route cables.
  • 4 0
I had a sommet with this routing, It has a plastic guard that covers the cables starting near the BB and going up about 8 or 10 inches, in three years I never had any issues.
  • 2 0
and there is a bridge above bb that could have been used for that purpose
  • 2 0
Over the top you can end up with relatively tight radii on the cables under compression, and it all gets a bit crowded round there, so I can see why the did it.
  • 1 0
Put a bash guard on. Should solve any worry
  • 2 0
@dumr666: On my bike (old Transition Patrol) it's the same and I severed the brake hose in the Alps. The latest version of the Patrol has designed it over the top which is way less risk IMO.
  • 1 0
Cracking looking bikes and great spec for your hard earned. Though I find it odd that the reach on the more gravity focused bike is less than that of the trail bike.
  • 7 0
They use the same front triangle, and since the Sommet is a bit slacker -> shorter reach
  • 6 5
It could be even cheaper if someone would consider speccing the bikes with SR SUNTOUR suspension, I hear the Triair and Durolux are mighty good and pretty affordable
  • 2 3
This. I run an Suntour Auron on my trail bike. It's basically a Pike Ultimate, but a lot cheaper.
  • 5 2
Oh man PB commenters hate that. Suntour make good stuff too.
  • 1 0
Everyone seems a bit hesitant to go for Suntour purely because of that god awful XCT they punt so many of.
  • 1 0
@T4THH: ...which is something I absolutely don't understand. Rock Shox makes some absolutely dreadful low-end products too and no one seems to judge them by their low-end shite.
  • 1 0
@BenTheSwabian: I'd say its the raw volume of shite that suntour dishes out.
  • 1 0
Looks amazing and very impressive value and spec. I really really hope they do an aluminium version of the Sommet. That would definitely make it a contender for my next bike.
  • 4 1
How do I get a frame only?!
  • 1 0
I got my sentier frame on clearance from CRC. So they do come up on there just have to watch.
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: Oh no way! I've never seen any. Thanks for the tip, I'll have to keep an eye out.
  • 3 4
Excellent spec choices, just a couple complaints (of course):
- No Sommet with a Zeb?
- Nukeproof wheels would have been a great spec choice over the DT
- Geo is a little short on the Sommet; for what its intentions seem to be
Other than those nit picks, great work
  • 2 3
WOuld have like a Zeb too! The top one is nice looking color but I dont want Fox suspension... even a friend of mine just bought a top Pivot Firebird with Fox Factory and destroyed his X2 and the Fox 38 is creaking as hell!! Might work well but really don't want to buy those!!
  • 3 0
Long travel YT Izzos. Those bikes look nice
  • 1 0
How come there's no bridge in the seat stays? (No I'm not a design engineer) Awesome looking bikes, prob the best value bikes on the market.
  • 5 0
There are 2 bearings in the each of the rear linkage/SS connections, the linkage is bridged in front of the seat tube and it also uses a trunnion shock. All these decisions lead to the rear triangle being stiff enough with no seat stay bridge.
  • 1 0
@mhyndman: Wait!... someone who actually knows bike engineering in pinkbike comments!!??? .. I'm telling you, vitus broke the internet today.
  • 1 0
@enjuto: im fairly sure this man works as a design engineer for CRC! lol
  • 3 0
 Paintjobs are on point here.
  • 2 0
Who has experience on a vitus? Are these quality frames? Can't beat the components at this price point.
  • 3 0
got a 2018 escarpe and it shreds! alloy though so can't speak for these carbon beauties!
  • 4 0
Had a Sommet for 2.5 years, I ride pretty hard and sometimes case jumps hard and had no problems. My teenage kid has been riding it the last 6 months and it's still good. Weight of the aluminum frame bike is very reasonable, just barely heavier than the carbon Patrol that I have now. I will probably get another one for my kid soon since he's grown out of the current one. My only complaint before was not enough seat tube insertion which they seem to have improved now.
  • 1 0
ive broken 3 of their aluminium frames at the same point. Im a bit of an ape though so...
  • 1 0
Been on a vitus hardtail 3 seasons, traveled to many shuttle areas. I ride it hard and weigh 260. Zero issues. My other bike is a mega, excellent so far. Got it last summer.
  • 1 0
@adamxrt: damn dude! Where did they break?
  • 3 0
Sounds great! Even the music in the video!
  • 2 0
Is the wheelbase on the sommet 29 correct? Seems to be different on CRC and the vitus site.
  • 2 0
The suspension graphs are really blurry and impossible to read. Do you have higher quality copies please?

Thanks
  • 1 0
Ah it's fixed now - ignore me. Thanks
  • 4 0
 SOLD
  • 2 0
Came here expecting the e-sommet. Is there a filter so I don't have to read about retro bicycles?
  • 2 0
Actually im being a dick. The sommet crx looks bloody brilliant & I may well buy one to compliment my ebike & dh bike. What superb vfm it seems to be.
  • 1 0
I wonder if this bike can run a trunnion shock of 205x65 in high setting, since the original shock is 205x62.5 and can work in high/low setting.
  • 2 0
Seems to be the sake philosophy as guerilla nijes anyway. I strongly suppose the front triangle of escarpe and sommet to be the same and shock stroke, link and aluminium rear end make the other bike
  • 1 0
Hmmm, how to buy in usa...stock(sommet)on wiggle.com says out; usually available 2-4 weeks.
How accurate ia that? No email.listed or contact us link
  • 1 0
Not very accurate. I've been refreshing the screen on other bikes for like 2 months now.
  • 2 0
Swap that DPS for a proper shock and I've literally nothing to complain about... Wow!
  • 1 0
Why brands route the cables below the bottom bracket where all the mud and rocks hit hard?
  • 2 0
Worth going for the CRS to get lockout on rear damper?
  • 2 0
Extremely impressive value for money on the cheapest build
  • 2 0
Oh god, the prices is so good ill buy them!
  • 1 0
The bikes look great. Strange that the BB drop on the Sommet is 10mm less than on the Escarpe.
  • 3 0
 It's longer travel?
  • 1 0
 Common front triangle.
  • 3 1
This is a Norco sight lol. Geo is almost identical. Looks sick tho
  • 2 0
No bad thing and between the 2020 model and the 2021 model, just over six months, the price of a Sight went to the moon.
  • 3 0
I was thinking the same thing, but you get a lot more for your money
  • 3 0
It's a four-bar MTB with modern geometry. Norco make similar bikes, but they hardly hold the patent on them. The sizing is usefully different on these - some people (like me) would fall between the M and L on a Norco.
  • 2 0
Already sold out for the year ?
  • 3 0
 Not even released yet.
  • 1 0
Wiggle says 2-4 weeks...seems like the standard response tho. Gta get it from horses mouth
  • 2 0
82 cm standover on a medium? What??
  • 2 0
That's gonna be hard to beat.
  • 1 0
These 38 mil forks are relegating 34 to the hybrids. I'm not a fan, but before you know it we will look at 34 mil as cheap.
  • 1 0
Hi, does anyone know if I can fit the Fox x2 shock on Escrape crx frame ?
  • 1 0
I'd be very surprised if it didn't fit
  • 4 2
 No aluminium Frown
  • 2 0
I think this is a more accurate reflection of how little the real difference in production cost is between aluminium and carbon frames. I understand it's only a few hundred dollars. Aluminium wouldn't be a great deal cheaper, AND they'd be dealing with more SKUs which would probably push prices up across the board.
  • 2 2
I am a big fan of Vitus, I own one, but the weight on these seems nuts -14.82 for a med framed carbon bike (escarpe CRS 29)
  • 7 0
That's on the lighter end for an Enduro bike. If you think that's heavy it's time to hit the gym!
  • 3 0
@ThunderChunk: Escarpe is a trail bike though so apples to oranges
  • 3 0
@ThunderChunk: 15kg is definiltely not on the light side for an all mountain/ enduro bike.
  • 1 0
@tomo12377: still about average. Bikes are getting heavier these days, even trail bikes are exceeding 15kg. It's really nothing to complain about. 1 kg isn't going to make a huge difference
  • 1 0
 32-34lbs avg enduro these days.
  • 2 1
 @BenTheSwabian:

But it has proper tyres (assegai) and the build has not the super ligjt parts anyway, beginning with the wheelset. It is a rwally solid build especially for the price and it would be easy to get it lighter without too much money tossed in. Besides the 38 weighs iver 2.4 kilos. Would sell that thing anyway and exchange against an Era or a Mezzer
  • 1 0
Why decrease antisquat 10% from the previous year?
  • 1 0
It's now closer to 100% at sag
  • 1 0
 first song?
  • 2 1
 they look good
  • 1 1
I wish they had a high end XC HT, it would be an instant buy for me.
  • 2 3
Why are they so heavy? (Someone had to complain)
  • 1 2
Bummer on the wheelsets. 3 pawl system is a no for me dawg
  • 1 0
The hubs in the E1700s can be upgraded with 54t ratchets at least
  • 2 4
The sommet looks like an e-bike
  • 1 2
 Looks like a session.
  • 1 4
 Looks like a slash
