Final Results: Nove Mesto XC World Cup 2021

May 16, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Haley Batten began making moves earliy on and would soon find herself timing an attack towards the last lap.

The results are in from an incredible weekend of racing at the second round of the 2021 XC World Cup in Nove Mesto. In the U23 racing, Carter Woods took a second win in 2021 with an almost two minute lead on Riley Amos. Mona Mitterwallner also took her second World Cup win of the season as she just beat out Caroline Bohe to the finish line.

Loana Lecomte once again dominated the Elite Women's racing as she proved she is the rider to beat this year. After taking the lead on the start loop and building a 29-second gap by the end on lap one, she was unstoppable today. Haley Batten also had a great ride as taking 2nd place in her first year racing as an Elite. Rebecca McConnell rounded out the top three as she was the only other rider to come within two minutes of Loana Lecomte.

For the Elite Men, it was a battle between Thomas Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel from the first lap. A big attack by Pidcock on the third lap saw him take a 30-second lead that he would extend to a minute by the time the race ended. Mathias Flueckiger and Ondrej Cink rode strong races to third and fourth place respectively, current Elite World Champion Jordan Sarrou just snuck into the top five. Round one winner Victor Koretzky didn't have the best of days as he crossed the line in 24th position. Nino Schurter also struggled today with a mid-race crash, placing him outside the top five for the first time in Nove Mesto.

Check out the full results and updates from the race as it happened below.

Pidcock carrying GB to the Olympics & doing it in pure style!
  • 15 0
The humblebrag was strong in that post race interview too, dude is on a roll and not afraid to say it
  • 138 0
@mtallman2: if I beat Van Der Poel by a minute I'd never shut up about it down at the pub
  • 10 0
@rad-but-also-sad: most definitely, not saying he was out of line at all, if my 21 year old self did what he did to MvDP today, I wouldn’t have been nearly as sportsmanlike about it.
  • 4 0
Does he have a place yet? Last I heard there was no GB xc team.
  • 3 0
@Bob-Agg: According to commentators, if Romanian rider Vlad Dascalu finished 24th or better, GB would have an olympic spot... I have no idea why is that, but he finished 17th, so if the math was right, GB should have a spot.
  • 2 0
@Jango997: let’s hope so. It would be a shame not to have one of the top riders there
  • 12 1
Unfortunately, if Tom doesn't get a spot, the people who advised him in 2019 are to blame (he was 19 at the time). Mathieu made the same mistake in preparation for Rio 2016.

If Tom had competed in the 2019 U23 MTB Worlds, he surely would have finished fourth or better, which at this point secures an automatic place for the Olympics. But instead, he chose to compete in the 2019 U23 Road Worlds, which ultimately helped him land a contract with INEOS (I skipped a few other races here).
  • 3 0
@Jango997: it's explained on this Dutch site (link to translated one)
cutt.ly/NbCJyA3

It's bloody complicated but the commentators were right, thanks to Dascalu's place Romania is in top21, and their "free" ticket which Dascalu got in u23 2019 World Champs goes to GB thanks to their 14th place there Big Grin
(and my home country, Slovakia, is now out Smile Frown )
  • 1 1
@Jango997: Sounds strange but it is Olympic selection. I'm sure gcn said his and team gb fate hinged on the performance of one of the UK women. If he keeps up this form and can't go there will always be questions about the gold.
  • 1 0
@ice29: Great news! We'll, not for Slovakia.
  • 3 0
@Bob-Agg: Well they could still play it fair and give the place to Frazer Clacherty, who took that, now very precious, 14th place in 2019... Smile
  • 1 0
@ice29: as always very good WielerFlits analysis. Thanks for sharing tup
  • 5 0
@ice29: Well, as a scotsman who's done absolutely no research on who he is or where he's actually from I'm suddenly going to have to go with some bloke named Frazer Clacherty. Sorry Tom.
  • 2 0
 'Mon the Clach.
  • 1 0
@dolores: Lets hope he gets a place! The road worlds were held in Harrogate in 2019, less that 10 miles from his house - so he was always going choose that over MTB worlds TBH.
  • 4 0
@mtallman2: I friggin love the guy, he smashed MVP and the entire field and would've last week had it not been for that 9th or 10th row start (fact check). He is the F1 equiv of Mercedes Benz in XCO......Go Get em Pidcock!
  • 9 0
@PivotMach: Anything to keep Rob from saying "Nino Schuuurrrrttteeerrr" 714 times each race, and I'm good.
  • 1 0
Does anyone know what bike Tom was on. Can’t see it mentioned anywhere.
  • 1 0
I think pidcock will start deep in the field at Olympics though. Not fair but makes sense, doesn't have enough UCI races.

Bart saying that Ondřej Cink is the worst technical rider in the top ten, on live TV @1hr15min, was a bold move. I'm not sure that he will make it out of the Czech Republic alive.
  • 8 2
but it's true, bart is right
  • 7 1
One of the few riders cleaning the technical climbs today, maybe Cink isn’t historically the strongest tech rider but his showing today was top notch. Bold is probably the wrong word for Bart’s comments...
  • 11 0
Have to agree with him sadly. He is probably the slowest descender amongs the top riders. Not too bad at technical climbs tho.
  • 2 1
That was told about Kulhavy also, might be Czech bashing... Never saw footage proving that point
  • 3 0
Czech commentators said the same in the Czech TV broadcast yesterday, they even hinted Cink mentioning this himself a few times (seems he is well aware of his weak points)

Pidcock wins the XC as Bernal wins stage 9 of the Giro- what a day for Ineos!
  • 4 3
 who's this Bernal guy?
  • 34 2
@AntonReekmans: some washed up, former mountain biker

@jamessmurthwaite: Clearly this is a case in which Bernal couldn't hack it against the competition on the XCO side, and subsequently bailed to the pro road tour to bag some easy wins. Smile

it's about the athlete, not the brakes, Amazing Loana Lecomte!
(it's refreshing to hear that she recognizes the importance of Julie Bresset in mtb, she knows her sport)

PRO: Shimano Brakes
  • 3 0
Julie Bresset is her teammate, that might explain something Smile
  • 7 0
@oxentiel: in the past, other athletes haven't mentioned the importance of their teammates so I don't think it's about being teammates; she really seems knowledgeable about the history of the sport. She even mentioned that it was a dream come true to share a podium with Jenny Rissveds last Friday tup
  • 12 0
@dolores: True, but I know Loana a little bit and I can tell you that Julie and Loana share a lot of things when tey are together on the races. She knows her sport, for sure (she told me last week after albstadt she's still a fan and for her, it's unbelievable to race with her idols Big Grin ), but Julie helps Loana a lot in her approach of the races and how to stay calm despite these success and all the media thing.
  • 4 4
There’s no problem having problematic equipment when you have a full time mechanic to do all the dirty work.
  • 16 1
 Fuck ya Carter!
  • 11 2
My big takeaways: 1. We may be missing the start of dominant reigns for Loana and pidcock. 2. Nino may grab a short track win in the future but his XCO winning days look over. 3. Koretsky 24th? 4. Emily Batten is great to watch. Enthusiastic and joyous. 5. Cink is putting it together. He's not the ambitious rider he was in 2019 -- he's a regular podium guy now. 6. I feel for fluekkinger who is the best XC rider in the world right now not named pidcock or MVDP. The Troy Brosnan of XCO. We should see a win from him again soon.
  • 15 0
Nino seems way closer to winning XCO than short track, he finished 2nd last week!
  • 9 0
@chris-brown225: didn't someone start 109 last week, get to the front, get a flat, pump it up, have a slow puncture and then finish 5th.

Nino is a incredible rider, probably the about best that has ever been in XC, but he is 35 now. I even have a pair of his shoes at home.
  • 6 0
Got to agree, Flückiger had an amazing race. He was on another level than the rest of the "traditional" xc riders.
  • 4 0
@jtorrento Flueckiger, the Troy Brosnan of XCO.. So true haha
  • 3 0
My guess on Nino is that he is peaking for the Olympics, which seems to be a huge influence in XC Racing. He's getting older, so it's hard to maintain pace throughout an entire season, and he's basically won every WC record he can (other than needing to win just one more XCO), so he's likely taking the early season juuuust a bit easy to go for an Olympic win.

I think that Nino's dominance of winning multiple XCO's a year is over as he's just gotten too old, but I would be shocked if he doesn't win a handful more. Especially just 1 to get that record, and he clearly still has a ton left in the tank considering last week's race was a sprint finish for second.
  • 2 0
@tgent: Remember, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå won her last race at Andorra of all places, at age 45.
I don't know if Nino's got that level of longevity but there are people out there that do.
I wouldn't be surprised if he does.
  • 1 0
@Augustus-G: and he's dedicated as hell. But even back in 2019 he won just 2 of the 7 world cups. Admittedly he podiumed in nearly all the others, but it's been 3 years now since he's dominated.
  • 1 0
@jtorrento: Not a disagreement on the domination portion. I think Nino will continue to pick off wins here and there until he decides he done.
  • 12 0
Ironic that the guy not using a dropper ruined my chance to win a dropper. Victor Koretzky, I will not forget this!

Looks like Lecomte competes in her own league again

I love that all the ads during the XC coverage on RBTV are for their slopestyle and freeride films

I put gas fitters tape under my bar clamps so that I can do them tight enough not to flex under braking, but they rotate around the bars in a crash that may bend the lever. Old moto trick.

So stunning to see an American up there and think that the a US racer could win a WC XC race again. I felt like for some reason it would never happen again, this is so exciting to see her up near the top!
  • 15 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: you felt it would never happen again? Its been since 2019, last year was a hit or miss year for both and Courtney is still a mainstay at the pointy end of the race. It’s not like it’s been ages since the US women last won and they’ve had a top 5 rider for the last 3 seasons now

 @scissors888:

DCA has no idea what he's talking about. We can just hope it's not too long before he crosses enough lines to earn another suspension. Just a battery-powered troll.
  • 7 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: yet another subject you’re clearly ignorant about. Guess you’ve never heard of Kate Courtney...

"Kate Courtney is in the tech zone having a bent brake lever fixed." Bent brake lever? Don't they all have carbon levers?
  • 2 0
I had the same thought. Last I knew she was on Level Ultimates, the levers are carbon.
  • 5 0
Yeah the lever was hanging on but it wasn't attached to the mechanism any more

At this point Lecomte should race with men, what a machine she is

It’s amazing that the top women would be in the top 20 of the Mens racing. They are defo closing the gap.

@enduroNZ: The women did one less lap

@enduroNZ: Not to take anything away from Lacomte but she would have been lapped and pulled before the end if she was in the mens race. See the lap times here. www.uci.org/mountain-bike/news/2021/coming-up-live-2021-mercedes-benz-uci-mountain-bike-world-cup-in-nove-mesto

@OnTheRivet: it’s like when people think the best college football team could beat the worst NFL team - wouldn’t even be a match
  • 1 0
@OnTheRivet: Any idea why they pull riders that get lapped? When it was mentioned on the live feed it was the first I'd heard of it (I've only been paying attention to xc for a couple years). What's the point of pulling the slow riders? I mean, they're probably not in the points positions so it doesn't matter for that, but still kinda for the pulled riders. I'm no expert but I can't think of any other racing sport, like motor sports, etc where they do that.
  • 2 0
@kcy4130: Having slower riders on the course risks impeding the faster riders who are coming around for lapping. A rider could take advantage of a spot to get around a slow, lapped rider and open a big gap to the closest chasers if they can't also make it around at the same point. I know in motorsports this is part of the game and tactics are applied accordingly but for higher-level XCO events the powers that be choose to remove that scenario from the equation as part of the UCI rules, for events that choose to strictly apply them.

USA Women are crushing it - Hailey is legit and Hannah Finchamp moved from 78th to 49th passing some very big names - when she gets a good starting line up - she'll be top ten. Great job team USA!

17. Emily Batty (+6:20)
23. Catharine Pendrel (+6:47)
  • 3 0
All depends on how many slots they have. If they have 2 she probably will. They haven't done that well in the past couple years as batty has digressed since 2018 so I'm not sure howany slots they currently have. Sad for Haley since she had a couple really good years and has been struggling with stuff more recently.
  • 6 0
@wilsonians: two according to the last update of March 2020 (fourth place). On Tuesday there should be an update with Leogang 2020 + Albstadt 2021 + Nové Město na Moravě 2021 points added. France will surely advance, so Canada will probably drop to 5th or 6th place at most, even if Canada drops to 7th place, it is two spots for the Olympics.
  • 1 0
@dolores: ah gotcha, hadn't heard the updated lists. That makes sense. Hopefully pidcock gets a spot then since I knew it was sort of up in the air if gb men would get one.
