Jenny Rissveds you champion, what a massive comeback.

I though that once she finally qualified for XCC she could do something about starting in 50th place in the XCO every bloody time. If you can battle your way from 50th to 3rd, you can come from 8th to 1st. Jenny will be swapping that Swedish jersey for the Rainbow Stripes in a few weeks!

Are we sure that Kate and Nino's bike frames aren't made of aluminum instead of carbon painted silver?

Hats off to Jenny Rissveds and Mathieu Van der Poel, who both are to me the story of the year in XCO MTB.

Great to see her in the top 5, never count her out. I feel she doesn't get the credit she deserves, well done! Also, awesome job Jenny, what a great story this season is for her.

For several years now Lenzerheide has had that backup issue on the first downhill during a start, and done nothing to fix it. I can understand if it's "you're in 70th place, too bad", but the backup actually starts forming around the 10th position, and key guys in 10-20th are getting caught out.

Incredible ride for Jenny! Well done!

After winning a battle of the mind and on the trails, Jenny Rissveds said: “Never give up!” Her story is truly inspiring! From wanting to die to overcoming and winning. Congratulations Jenny! Smile

Or, she has been training for a two peak season? Because, it’s near impossible to hold a peak all season, especially as a young rider in an endurance sport. She crushed it at the start of the season, let’s see how the season finishes out before we rate her season. That said, if she continues with “just” some top 15 finishes, it would be pretty dang successful for a pro in her second year.

 Mathieu Thun Der Poel!! Impressive

Impressive power coming from MVDP. I hope he doesn't burn out with the schedule he's doing for the next 12 months.

I'm happy to see the conversation expand here but my point is we will send Kate and Chloe to the Olympics with a damn good chance of a good result. On the men's side who stands a chance of a top 10 result and would things be different if USAC were not so focused on road over MTB ?

USA women in the top 10..... 2. USA men in the top 110....... 0. WTF ???
  • 11 4
Yes. Hard to believe but American male athletes are not good at everything. That's the beauty of Racing, all nations have a shot!
  • 2 1
It will be interesting to see how may USA racers will be in the field in the next 2 races that are in North America. Obviously, not many changes at the top (as those are all supported riders) but I would expect some more US and Canadian riders entered.
  • 2 1
@RCederholm: all depends on how many were able to get enough UCi points through state/provincial/national events in Canada and the U.S

Now it is different come August 28 for world champs as there will inevitably be more north american riders as its each countries choice of who they send.

Snow shoe will be where we could see some new faces!
  • 1 0
The top American men (namely Keegan Swenson who's a Top 30 WC rider) didn't travel to Lenzerheide.
  • 1 0
@RCederholm: I wonder if Howard Grotts will make the trip. I've seen his name pop up a couple of times in Western US races but not much since he took ill right before the Cape epic.
  • 2 0
@Jamminator: isn’t Swenson racing the Breck Epic? I
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: Well, IMPO most of that has to doing with culture. Most of the US's best athletes are more interested in Stick & Ball Sports. Compared to Europe, in general, cycling is a niche sport here.
  • 1 0
@whambat: think so? Also Grotts just got the 3-peat at the Leadville100 this weekend
  • 1 0
@Artikay13: Indeed I do, both from my travels as well as what I read.
8 of the Top 10 Bicycles per Capita Countries are in Europe.
The only 2 not in Europe are Japan & China.

Excellent news about HG, thank you.

@Augustus-G: Here in the Northeast USA we are seeing racing programs aimed at young school aged children now where there wasn't any even a few year ago. Basically a club organization where all are welcome. Lot's of kids participating as early as 7 or 8 years of age (NEHSCA is the local organization).
  • 2 0
@Augustus-G: While I agree about ball focused sports, I'd wager the bigger issue specific to XC MTB is that many of the up-and-coming young talent ends up getting pressured/converted into road racing by coaches, sponsors, development squads, etc, because the USAC is blood thirsty for top road talent. These younger guys just end up leaving the MTB discipline altogether when they see more opportunity in road and never develop past Juniors or U23 in Elite XC. The guys who end up staying in XC are those who truly love it and could never do something else, as evidence by the other MTB events they regularly do outside the UCI. In other disciplines we are still holding well, which backs my theory. Look at DH, we have some great riders like Gwin, Neko, Luca, Norton, etc. Or Enduro, with Rude and formerly Keene, with some new talent like Osborne.
  • 1 0
@Augustus-G: he's kind of stepped back from pro racing. He just won Leadville yesterday though.
  • 1 0
@Raivkka: Earlier this week I was involved in a similar conversation and stated that it was getting better with the rise of High School Cycling Teams and such. I should have reiterated that here. I fully agree that we the situation is improving but we're still far behind the Europeans in youth cycling programs.
  • 4 0
@Jamminator: I agree that MTB is second fiddle to Road Cycling where USAC is concerned but the bigger issue comes down to cycling not being a main stream sport in the US. Case in point, even with all of USAC's gyrations pushing Road cycling for decades the US only managed to field 4 riders in the Tour de France this year. Considering we have a population of just under 330 Million I'd say that's a pretty poor showing.

Yes, on the DH front we've done pretty well as of late. Not certain as to the causality of it but may come down to the "Thrill Seeker" element drawing more kids.

Years ago we had a much better men's XC showing but overall the country was in whole lot better physical shape. And, that brings us to another problem. Fitness, or better stated, the lack there of.

During the '80's the country was swept by a fitness craze. It was tsunami wave size in scope.
Cycling, running, gyms, aerobics and all sports in general benefited from it. It seemed like everyone was on the go. Since then the country, taken as a whole, has really gotten lazy and fat to put it bluntly. Just look at our obesity rates. They're really sickening. XC & Road Racing require a lot of effort, pain and suffering to be good at which is a real turn off to a lot of today's youth. It's quite evident right here on the PB, forums.
Half joking comments about those forms of cycling being masochistic are common place along with comments about disdaining pedaling too much. Then there's the issues of requiring a long (by today's standards) attention span and the lack of instant gratification. XC & Road cycling have those against them too. Gotta get a lot of kids off the X-Box and back outdoors to start with.

Time to get off the computer and put some miles down. Cheers.
