Vali Holl winning qualifying once again

The results are in from an amazing third round of the 2021 DH World Cup in Maribor.

Jackson Goldstone kicked off racing today by taking his second World Cup win after his first at the last round in Les Gets. Jordan Williams couldn't quite match the top speed today and crossed the line in second, 0.387 back. Repeating the same top three as Les Gets, Lachlan Stevens-McNab finished the weekend in third place. Impressively Jackson Goldstone's winning time would have been good enough for fifth place in yesterday's Elite Men's qualifying.

The Junior Women's racing saw another repeat victory from Les Gets as Phoebe Gale, once again, set the fastest time of the day. Phoebe was able to pull ahead of second place with a 0.791 gap to Izabela Yankova. Closing out the top three was Aina Gonzalez Grimau, sitting just over five seconds back.

The Elite Women's racing provided some incredible riding, with Myriam Nicole besting the tricky course. Eleonora Farina laid down a flat out run to take second place with a 1.322 second gap from the leader. Camille Balanche finished off the top three riders backing up a first and third place at the first two rounds this year. It was another tough day for Vali Höll. After qualifying first, she couldn't find the top race pace and ends the day in sixth.

It couldn't have been more dramatic in the Elite Men's racing as the lead changed hands for every one of the final four riders. In the end, it was Loris Vergier who was finally able to show his incredible speed as he took the win by 1.7 seconds. Thibaut Daprela backed up his win in Les Gets with a second-place finish. At one point, it even looked like he was going to take another victory today. Laurie Greenland put down one of the wildest runs we have seen this week and found himself finishing in third place.

What‘s the point with all the hate for Claudio? Do you guys know him or did he do anything to upset you? I know him and i know how much he has done and still does for the cycling sport!

Show some respect and be friendly.....at least try to!
  • 62 4
So true. Claudio seems like a lovely guy and to be honest I thought he was better than the guy last time. Claudio seemed less false. Totally agreed, even if people don't like him for their own personal reasons, there is absolutely no justification, whatsoever, for saying hateful things about him.
  • 35 4
I don’t get it, especially when Claudio is actually exciting and says things relevant to the moment. Eliot literally said the same thing about every rider during every run -“this guy is actually stronger and fitter that you realize”
  • 47 4
 Good to hear Claudio again.
  • 12 2
I appreciate Claudio for his work with Velosolutions and Ride for Peace. I have no opinion on his work as commentator.
  • 37 3
@Tracefunction: it is so weird the comments people make about him. Like, I actually really liked the guy last time, he was excellent, but, it was a bit too ESPN for me and didn't fit as well as Claudio. If people watch a replay of the race they'll realise Claudio says plenty of highly relevant things and also helps the excitement and the positivity. Same with Rob Warner. Honestly, if people stop and think about it, sports commentator is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Watch a NASCAR race, an English soccer game, an F1 race etc., none of them come close to the quality of the commentary for DH because Rob and Claudio are so close to the sport and have been there themselves, they are also not artificially moulded by some mega sports broadcaster who wants fake drama and excitement and generic DH information. Anyone that has watched a mountain bike race from a conventional broadcaster will know how absolutely horrific the commentary is. Maybe Rob, Claudio and Elliot would be the dream team. Elliot would give it that glamour that the big broadcasting companies like, and it is no bad thing, as long as there is the depth and breadth of knowledge and passion.
  • 20 5
@mccarthyp: Pretty much on point. I like Elliot and he's a good mtb journalist overall, but his live "play by play" was so muted and repetitive, you could tell he was way out of his depth. He either needs more practice on a smaller stage or to be the third man who offers some anecdotes here and there rather than 1 of the 2 main commentators.
  • 53 1
The problem is Reece Wilson was so brilliant when he snuck into the booth, he set the bar quite high. I almost wish they would let Wilson go down first and then straight to the microphone. Regardless, we're lucky to not have some of the insufferable dopes they use for the X-games as @mccarthyp described.

Can't stand his voice, and a lot of times he is clueless about what's really going on in the race.
  • 38 16
 2 Things:

-His commentary is quite often a wildly different interpretation from what's actually happening than mine. Rather personal I know, but I think Reece and Elliot have a way better insight into whats happening and provide more poignant commentary on the race.

-He leaked Bryceland's departure from WC racing during the broadcast of his last race run before Bryceland had a change to announce this himself. On top of that, he cited wrong reasons...

I surely don't hate him, but I dislike him enough to prefer having somebody else in the commentary box.
  • 12 1
@Stoegl: the Bryceland incident was a total horror show, I can't deny it Frown

Reece awesome, can't deny that either. Some day I'm sure he'll be on the mic.
  • 11 8
I started that thread. And I have no hate for Claudio. But I was disappointed because I think Elliot is better.
  • 14 7
Claudio is great. No disrespect towards Elliot, but the announcers booth is not the place for him.
  • 15 0
Well, it's OK if some don't like Claudio as commentator or favor another person - no issues with that. It's just that many native english speakers out there seem to forget how hard it is for a foreigner to comment on a live event where you have no time to look up the right words in your brain. All good as long as people do not misinterpret their disfavor for a person as qualification to label them as bad commentator.
  • 16 0
@Stoegl: I personally rather feel that Claudio's interpretations are most of the time spot on - at least as spot on as Rob's Wink

As for Reece - yes he is a very charming guy and did a fantastic job as well as Elliot. So i'd say we can be happy to have some variations in the commentary box and none of these guys deserves a "boo"!
  • 7 1
@Stoegl: Letting go of things is a skill that takes time to master…

Admittedly it took me a while to get over some of his style but overall i cannot imagine live-documentary without him.

He’s deeply passionate, super knowledgeable and him and Rob “this man”-man are mutually ironing out misunderstandings about whats going on without being awkward.

I highly enjoy it and am thankful that he’s a part of what makes following DH-racing as exciting and - above all - human as it is.

Thank you Claudio (Tracey, Rob and Elliot) for making it special everytime for those who can’t be there in person!
  • 2 5
@whiteboarder: That's true, but you can still call bullsh** on a bullsh** move a few years after. Especialy when it fits the context Wink
That said, I wouldn't argue with anything you (and many others) wrote about his positive traits, his passion and the good he did/does for the sport in general.
It almost seems like sympathy/antipathy are largely subjective.

@danielson-01:
Let's not get too far into Warner vs Claudio, haha.
If they keep mixing it up with the commentators like they did so far this year, I'm happy.
And who knows, maybe, someday, we'll live in world with Warner, Peaty, and Minnaar in the commentary box (and tearing it down in the process). Although it will probably take some years until Minnaar is ready to retire...

 Elliott who?
  • 3 1
@Stoegl: All fair. At least you let go of Rob preannouncing Danny’s move to “a square brand”… ; )
  • 8 1
@whiteboarder: I'm all for team rumors in the live commentary! But there's a difference between commenting on a rumor (Hart) and putting someone in a tight spot (Bryceland).
  • 5 3
@Stoegl: Both is crossing the line for an “insider” which one might consider unprofessional.

We can take this discussion to Geisskopfhütte over a beer if you like : )

I was super happy to see Claudio and Warner today. These 2 impersonate MTB commentary for me, so I'm just showing some support here

Claudio has stepped in it too many times. The Bryceland and Atherton incidents put me off...he cant hold a candle to Rob as far as skills in the booth go.
  • 5 1
@whiteboarder: they were VERY different situations. What about the Racheal comments a couple years back?
  • 5 0
@LuDH: They both impersonate and personify, which is no mean feat.
  • 8 3
Was totally pumped to have Claudio back
  • 5 2
Bring back that big American guy who looks like he never raced a bike in his life and he always yells "Shut the front door." Brad something or other, I think.
  • 8 1
I was super happy to see Claudio was back, he's just classic imo. Eliot is better with interviews and stuff, Claudio for commentator any day. Warner and Wilson were really good too though.
  • 5 1
 @danielson-01: spot on!
Just like in surfing. Give all of them some mic time. It does not have to be all Rob or Claudio or Elliot or Reece.. Personally they all give some interesting input in a way or another
And thanks red bull for the coverage!!!
  • 3 4
Typically when people assail others that way, its their way of saying they themselves are pretty bland and lacking unique personality; so they form animosity and mild resentment to those that exhibit exuberance and success. It's comforting to them-(the weak hearted) to be a blanket that stifles the light to shine out of others. Their thirst for conformity of character from others will never be quenched unless they surrender to humility of heart.
  • 3 3
I know him and he upset me!! LMAO. JK. He's just boring.
  • 4 3
@Tracefunction: Got to give Eliot time to learn and practice! It takes that to be good. He has huge potential.
  • 2 2
@Mntneer: Mate, he did one race. Give him a chance! It takes time to learn and practice.
  • 14 8
Nothing against Claudio personally, great guy, but he's just doesn't add alot of value in the booth. Basically just parrots what Warner says, or points out super obvious things. Elliott was a breath of fresh air, and I really hope he gets another chance. He had way more insights about setup, line choice and rider strategy than Claudio has ever had. And you could tell Elliott had done his homework, he had interesting anecdotes about some of the lesser known riders. IMO Elliot is already better then Claudio, and with experience he'll only improve even more
  • 3 0
I had the pleasure of meeting Claudio and Rob at MSA in 2018 at the club party. Claudio took the time to get to know my story and entertained a conversation where I was in awe at speaking with a couple of my hero’s. Rob Warner could give two sh*ts although I think he was pretty hammed. Stood there with his sunglasses on all night, I asked him who he thought was going to win the final. He waits for a pause and bluntly states with the utmost confidence “Bruni.”

Loic went out and smoked the field the next day at MSA and I got to give him a hug at the after party.
  • 9 1
Claudio can be an amazing guy, great ambassador for the sport, and genuine person but also a boring color commentator. These things are not mutually exclusive.
  • 6 1
Just because some one is a nice person does not mean they are good at their job.

Congrats Jackson!!! Massive result for a win after that horrible crash in the rock garden. The future of Canadian DH continues to shine brightly.

Yoo soo stoked to see him win, great things in his future.

Vali needs to do something about dealing with not winning before she burns herself down. She seems pissed at every race for not winning, and not winning is not the end of the world specially in your first elite year. It takes a lot of time and consistency to nail down a first place and she is (and us are) expecting for her to do it from day one. Camille on the other hand is handling the pressure from the rainbow stripes in a completely different way, riding completely comfortable, without pressure and landing podium after podium, and most importantly enjoying whatever result she gets she is in a totally different mental game. Like today she was obviously slowed down and missed the win in the last woods, maybe fatigue or a wrong line, but still happy with a third place.
  • 10 0
I have not heard an interview with her after her race run so I'm not sure whether she actually this upset. In an interview she gave yesterday she mentioned that she's now trying to have more fun and not be too focused on the results. So that seems like a good approach. But yeah, it is a tough one. Her amazing junior results (with race times that would have landed her on the elite podium) have raised expectations everywhere which is hard to ignore. Camille on the other hand, even when she was wearing the rainbow stripes many people still considered her the underdog. It might help that her partner is also a mental coach. Agreed if Vali doesn't have one already (which I doubt in this day and age) it would be a worthy one to work with. It definitely isn't something one should try to figure out all by herself.
  • 29 5
Vali Höll seems extremely anxious and stressed all the time, taking everything at heart, and putting too much pressure on herself as if her life would depend on it.
She makes me think about those people who come from families where the parents constantly put pressure on their children to get the best out of them. In these families, you have to be the first at everything or nothing else, and a failure is rarely admitted. She's so young, she has her life in front of her, but she doesn't seem able to chill and take it easy.
I think her problem is only mental, not physical nor technical. Hopefully she'll get more maturity with time and experiences. Relax Vali, relax!!!
PS: may be she should be coached by Daprela Smile

There was no finish interview with VH today so where are you getting the 'pissed' from?
  • 26 2
@stikmanglaspell: She just rushed through finish area without a stop to congratulate Pompon
  • 22 2
@stikmanglaspell: Maybe the fact that she quickly left the finish area and didn't congratulate the winners?
  • 24 3
@stikmanglaspell: exactly what the people said here, she just went away not even looked back or congratulate the winner and was clearly pissed again. In the other hand, almost everyone in both women and men were satisfied with their run and show it regardless of the time or position, Reece Wilson, Brook, Kolb without chain for example where people were just happy to finish it in one piece and do a solid run and these riders I mentioned where all out of the top ten despite being in factory teams. Wilson was celebrating like he was in the lead and he finished 21st! Because he was struggling he was happy with what he achieved, not pissed with what he missed. That's the difference
  • 14 2
@not-really: Let's not jump to conclusions after what we could see over the internet. Maybe there was something personal in her family that messed with her mood and concentration, maybe something else, maybe nothing and you are right... we just don't know and I don't think it is fair to speculate and think we are right. The answer will come (or not). And even if you are right, the worst we could probably do for her is overanalyze it and judge it. She is young. Give her rest and space and trust that she probably already has the right people around her who can point her in the right direction. We probably can not much for her from here but we can do harm.
  • 11 0
Let's not forget the massive weight of expectations that were put on her shoulders in her last year as a junior. It was as if she was destined to be overall world champ in her rookie year at the elite level. Being an former junior world champ is just an indication, nothing more and nothing less. Look at Finn Iles, this is his 3rd of 4th year in the elites, still trying to get that first elusive win under his belt. Time will tell...
  • 10 0
She seems to be going through a lot of what Finn has experienced. Completely dominating the juniors only to struggle in the elite category. Good thing is both of them are very young and have time ahead of them to get it right.
  • 4 0
@ATXZJ: yup. Was gonna say the same, she is the women’s Finn. I hope she can get it under control better than he has; I love the kid but I’m no longer sure he can win at the Elite level.
  • 3 0
@Exbow: Danny Hart was also dominating the UK junior category (back when riding Balfa bikes) and when he joined Nico Vouilloz at Lapierre I expected great things, but nothing came. Yet even now, we know we can never rule the man out.
  • 3 1
@danstonQ: You remind me of the movie Pitch Perfect "As my father always said 'If at first you don't succeed, you're out of the family.'"
  • 2 0
Not only is not winning not the end of the world, it's part of the sport! Even the best riders we've ever seen have relatively few race wins if you compare to motor racing, for example.
  • 3 5
Why do you say that? I didn't see her interviewed after the race. How do you know she was pissed? Did she get interviewed? thx,
  • 2 0
It's not like any of us were any different as teenagers. We just weren't good enough at anything to be on live TV for people to see it
  • 10 1
@catweasel: Daprela is a similar age. He went straight over to congratulate Vergier on his win. I'm sure Vali will be happy to receive congratulatory hugs when she inevitably does get a win, but unless she matures quickly they may not be as forthcoming as she'd like.
  • 6 7
Yall need to relax. You dont become the best in the world by being happy with not performing well. Its obvious most people on here have never been a part of a program with elite athletes. I agree she can mature a bit to better manage those feelings, but shes 18...cut her some slack
  • 4 0
 @LaXcarp: She's 20 in December.
  • 3 4
@commental: Ok, shes 20. Cut her some slack
  • 6 2
You need to give here a break. She’s still a teen, remember when you were that age? Plus, and that’s more important: I can’t think of anyone who’s been put under more pressure from media at that age. Not even Danny or Iles. I don’t know her personally but I have talked to people who do: the thing she struggles most with is the hype. She will start to shine once the focus moves away again. Pretty sure about that.
  • 5 1
@LaXcarp: IMHO, her parents or manager needs to get her attitude in check. She is doing a poor job representing her sponsors and the people that pay her salary. You had a result you weren't happy with, and so did everyone else who's raced.
  • 4 0
@ATXZJ: IMO she needs work with a sports psychologist. These aren't feelings and emotions that you can just turn off with a switch or ignore. It takes purposeful work. She doesnt need to act the way people want her to act.
  • 1 0
@LaXcarp: fair point. Either way, hope she gets her act together.
  • 3 2
Once again, I don't think it is good to keep discussing her like this. It is doing more harm than good.

@LaXcarp: There is a difference between performance and result. You can be unhappy about your performance, but shouldn't let the result get to you too much. And it actually takes experience and mental strength the get there. I think riders like Gee Atherton and Greg Minnaar have that. They can finish lower ("crappy result" if you'd like to call it like that) but still be happy because their run went to plan. And then sometimes their result is right up there again. But many tend to judge their performance by their result (as in, how high up the score sheet) and that's where it gets frustrating. Because you don't have (and shouldn't have) control over how well others are doing. A well documented case is Steve Peat. If you've seen the Seasons movie (Collective/Anthill with Peaty racing MSA in 2007) and The Tipping Point (Clay Porter, the 2008 race season) you've noticed Peaty landed on the podium several times, but wasn't happy. In MSA 2007, Sam Hill was on the top step. In Val di Sole 2008 (Worlds) Peaty was actually happy with his run and Sam Hill crashed out, but Gee Atherton just had a faster run and won. Didn't mean Peaty suddenly had a bad run, but he was still upset. In 2009 he changed his mindset and learned to have fun again. He had a good season and won the Worlds. Another example is how Twan van Gendt improved his mindset in a relatively short period of time and eventually won the BMX Worlds. He is incredibly strong and disciplined, but being unhappy with poor (or "crappy") results was only doing harm. I love how well this was documented in the video below:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFXdnIYi7ig

TL;DR: Being unhappy with a "crappy" result doesn't help much because 1) you don't have full control over a result and 2) being unhappy isn't helpful full stop.

Hey @pinkbike... Have you considered doing a separate article for the different classes in the world cups? Comments are such a big part of the site, and seems like a lot of really good content is lost in the long threads, since for example there have been all the previous races commented on before the elite men have taken to the track.

What's the deal with Van der Poel? Has he made mention of wanting to race WC DH too or do you expect race updates of the XC race too. (Honestly don't know whether there will be a WC XC race in Maribor, haven't read anything about it so far.)

Ah sorry, completely missed that the European Championships XC were today (in Serbia) so that would have interfered with a WC XC in Maribor. Van der Poel wouldn't ride the EC but still, I wasn't aware he was expected to race the DH. Or well, at least @Number29 expected him to.

Eleonora was massively impressive too. Second place was well deserved and I trust we'll see more of her. Remember she was over a second faster than Vali between split 3 and 4 in the qualifications. That's quite something. Either way, Max Commencal must be happy. Another three Commencal riders on the elite podium. Supporting loads of racers just works.
  • 15 0
 @vinay: Elenora was super impressive
  • 8 0
@vinay: yeah that's what I thought, real breakout ride for her. Sometimes racers really come into their own when you least expect it, suddenly it's like a switch is flipped.
  • 5 0
@alexhyland: Yeah, was just checking the split times again. After split 2, she constantly decreased her gap on Myriam (if Myriam would have ridden first of course). Which basically means that after split 2, she was the fastest female elite rider on the course. This is hugely impressive. In the next few days, someone at PB will write a more detailed analysis so that might reveal more than I can see just from looking at these numbers. But if you look at her run, this definitely doesn't seem like luck. She was strong and precise. Good stuff to come!

Great racing. Dang I love DH.
  • 10 5
My issue with Claudio is that he doesn’t compliment Rob’s play-by-play commentary with unique observations, insights, and background stories like a good color commentator, but instead duplicates what Rob is doing often, and less effectively at that. Eliot did a little better in that regard, but was too passive and a bit milquetoast tbh. None of this is easy, granted, but that’s why good announcers make a lot of money and why broadcaster training exists.
  • 3 2
I hope Eliot gets another chance! As you say, it takes time, and I think he has tons of potential. I felt that Claudio was on his A game today, but that's still sort of boring in my opinion.
  • 2 0
@mybaben: Eliot is a thoughtful, introspective guy based on the extended interview I listened to (PB podcast maybe?) but I'm not sure that his real time commentary will ever be at a Bob Roll level or whomever we would hold up as some sort of color commentator gold standard. Hopefully he's getting some reps in (practicing with past race footage and Rob's audio track) before his next go. Claudio was definitely excited and engaged this time but he didn't elevate the commentary in any way imo. His best bit was the running down the hill thing during the intro, unless i missed something else during the first hour of racing (that I skipped).
  • 3 0
@Giddyhitch: Agreed on all points. Hopefully RB will give Eliot some good opportunities this season. Claudio was very energized, which was nice, but I'm still just so-so on him.
Digging commentators is so subjective I guess... I watch F1 racing and there is a commentator named Martin Brundle; I love that guy, and yet I heard someone say they thought he was boring... WTF?? Oh well....

the coverage started off incredibly well despite the lack of overhead drone footage. The females went off without a hitch the second one was passed the line the next dropped in. Great start with Phil Atwill defending the throne and then it just kept getting crazier and off the hook I actually thought the GOAT was going to take it as we saw the rest of the field unable to link it all faster....... then came some incredible riders and the rest is history. Greenland looked like a kid in a candy store.

 What about Junior Women?

I was on the track and Phoebe Gale was listed as DNS on the live timing and apparently she was late for her start (as I heard). Izabela Yankova was at first place and we were celebrating already, thinking she won. Don't get me wrong, a win is a win, Phoebe got down faster, but it was like 4-5 minutes after Sophie started.

So what actually happened? Phoebe was allowed to race even if she was late for her start? Because she's a factory rider?
I highly doubt any other non-factory girl would be allowed to start in this case.

Still, a second place is a great success, but it was disappointing to see that happen...
  • 1 0
Possibly so, but I do think junior men and women should get some slight leeway as they are very young and there is a lot of pressure. As for elites, that female elite rider moaning about being denied a late start due to flat tire is the sort of unprofessional entitled attitude that makes it so hard to apply some leeway for exceptional circumstances, such as a junior rider being a few minutes late.
  • 2 1
Question : As riders are going down the track, what do the others do ?
They're warming up but are they "in their bubble" and not wanting to know anything ?
Are they sometimes watching to see where things could be difficult ? (knowing where previous riders fall, curve or berm deteriorating, etc)
Are they having someone from the team watching and telling them if there's anything useful to know ?
  • 4 0
From what I recall, riders can know things if they want to. But depending on how they prepare mentally, they might like to shut off completely before their run. Not sure what year it was exactly, but back a few years ago at the final WC race, Gwin and Minnaar were very tight in points. I think Gwin won qualifiers but Minnaar still had more points leading into the finals. Minnaar rode really aggressively and early in his run blew the tire of the rim, getting the whole lot (tire and a bunch of inserts) tangled up. He had to walk down the track. Gwin didn't know and went all out though if he'd had known, he could have played it safe and taken the title cruising down. But he (obviously) wasn't watching the live stream whilst up in the start hut. However, there was an earlier year where there was a berm blown out. After his run, Josh Bryceland (who was on the same team) texted Greg Minnaar about this so Greg was prepared and adapted his run. So yeah, these are instances where it (could have) helped to receive some updates. But I think overall watching everything is a lott to process and it doesn't make for a proper mental preparation.

@mybaben: that's why I stopped running Maxis tires. Crash like that a few time on those tires rolling on local streets.
  • 2 0
@mybaben: A lot of the riders did that. The put the thing right on the racing line.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Yeah, if you wanted the inside line it was totally in the way. I think that's why so many riders were taking the outside, which wasn't a great line...
  • 2 0
@mybaben: the riders didn't seem too worried about it. Until the race I didn't realise that it wasn't actually that tight. It's just the fact that it's tarmac, but it's actually better than other flat turns we've seen in the past that have ruined at least one classic run. Tarmac is consistent, you have to give it that.
