Loic Bruni has never won a World Cup on French soil. Can he break the curse in Holy Lourdes

The opening round of the 2022 downhill World Cup is underway in Lourdes with the Junior racers taking to the steep and wild track for some flat out racing. In the Junior Women's race Gracey Hemstreet secures a huge win crossing the line over six seconds ahead of Phoebe Gale that would have been good enough for seventh in yesterday's Elite Women's qualifying. Phoebe Gale ends today in second with 2021 World Champion Izabela Yankova completing the top three, 8.585 seconds back. Backing up his incredible 2021 season Jackson Goldstone pilots his new Santa Cruz to the top of the podium with a nearly three-second gap to Remy Meier-Smith in second place. Jordan Williams was the only other rider to come within five seconds of Jackson and end the day in third position.

An incredible race from the Elite Women saw plenty of wild moments and some tight times as Camille Balanche opens the 2022 World Cup season with a big win. Myriam Nicole started race day with a big crash and she almost lost control again during her run but held it together and took second place by 0.624. Completing the top three was Tahnee Seagrave who went green at every split until the last part of the course and looked to be a threat for the win before losing a second to the finish line.

Racing doesn't get more exciting than the Elite Men's race with some incredible runs and creative lines it was impossible to guess who was going to win. Amaury Pierron bested the conditions and laid down a ride putting him 0.847 seconds ahead of a charging Finn Iles. Loic Bruni didn't manage the French win he wanted but his flat out run was good enough for third place. We now have an almost two-month break for the riders and team to get prepared for the return of the classic Fort William.

Check out the full results below.

3:48 am PDT

Another rider to fall just short of Nina's current fastest time is Veronika Widmann who goes into third place so far with a time of 3:38.255. We are still quite a way off the fastest qualifier from yesterday.

3:49 am PDT

Mille Johnset crashes at the top of the course, it is looking very loose and tricky at the moment for riders. Mille makes her way to the bottom of the course but it is a sixth place as she goes into the finish area.

3:52 am PDT

Mathilde Bernard goes fastest by nearly one and a half seconds! Mathilde has been looking fast all weekend and she has put down an amazing run when it mattered most.

3:55 am PDT

After a tricky time with injuries Marine Cabirou looks to be back on good form as she pulls a huge gap of over six seconds and takes the top time so far today.

3:58 am PDT

Eleonora Farina looks to of had some issues as she is over nine seconds back at split two.

4:02 am PDT

Camille Balanche lays down a wild run and takes the lead by a massive 5.637 seconds!

Tahnee Seagrave is over a second up at split two, this could be the fastest Women's run we have seen so far this weekend!

4:06 am PDT

Tahnee loses quite a bit of time on the second half of the track and falls behind Camille to take second by 0.997.

4:08 am PDT

After a crash earlier today Myriam Nicole doesn't seem to have slowed down for finals as she pulls out a huge 1.833 second advantage at split two.

4:10 am PDT

Myriam Nicole has a loose run with some scary moments but it isn't quick as she goes into 2nd place behind Camille by just over half a second.

4:12 am PDT

It's only Vali Höll who can beat Camille now and she is already half a second up at split one.

4:15 am PDT

Vali Höll goes over one and a half seconds back and into fourth place. Camille Balanche wins the Lourdes DH World Cup!

4:15 am PDT

3rd. Taylor Vernon: 2:55.721
4th. Bernard Kerr: 2:55.870
5th. Dean Lucas: 2:57.058

Aaron Gwin definitely hasn't had the start to the season he would have hoped for with an 11th place so far. Aaron is over three and a half seconds off the current fastest time. Another rider looking off the pace today is Brook MacDonald who is sitting in 16th place.

5:11 am PDT

A big crash for Charlie Harrison just before the second split. He loses almost 30 seconds but it's great to see that he looks uninjured.

5:17 am PDT

Kade Edwards' time continues to hold as it looks like he has put down an amazing bottom section of the course.

5:23 am PDT

Greg Minnaar has a flat out run with some crazy inside lines but he still goes into 2nd place by just over a second.

5:25 am PDT

Angel Suarez comes the closest so far to Kade but he is still 0.199 seconds off the pace.

Martin Maes is bounced off the course through the top rocks and loses over 17 seconds by the first split.

5:54 am PDT

The new Intense bike is looking fast already as Dakotah Norton lays down an amazing run to smash past Kade Edwards' time by over a second.

5:57 am PDT

The times keep on tumbling as Matt Walker goes fastest by 0.756 seconds!

6:00 am PDT

Laurie Greenland now goes into the lead after a wild run.

6:06 am PDT

6:09 am PDT

After being very close to Luca Shaw's time for most of the track, Reece Wilson goes across the line in second, 0.942 back.

6:16 am PDT

Danny Hart pulls back an incredible amount of time at the bottom of the course and finishes just 0.264 seconds back from Luca Shaw.

6:20 am PDT

Disaster for Loris Vergier as he slides out in one of the berms before the road gap. Loris pulls back some time before the finish line and sits in eighth place.

4th. Laurie Greenland: 2:51.567
5th. Antoine Vidal: 2:51.871

6:23 am PDT

Benoit Coulanges did something incredible at the bottom of the track and finds almost a second on Luca Shaw to take the lead.

6:26 am PDT

A horrible crash for Thibaut Daprela just before split three. Thibaut is up on his feet and slowly makes his way down the course.

6:30 am PDT

Amaury Pierron is destroying the fastest time so far with a one second advantage at split four.

6:31 am PDT

Amaury goes fastest by 1.466 seconds, this is going to be very hard for Finn Iles and Loic Bruni to beat.

6:32 am PDT

Finn Iles is nearly one second up at split two.

6:33 am PDT

Finn has dropped back at the fourth split but he could still go fastest.

6:34 am PDT

Finn goes into second place by almost a second, Amaury has done something special at the bottom of the course. Can Loic Bruni beat him?

6:36 am PDT

Loic Bruni is fastest at split two!

6:37 am PDT

Loic can't match Amaury at the bottom of the track and crosses the line in third place.

6:37 am PDT

Amaury Pierron wins the Lourdes DH World Cup!

Have to say Elliot Jackson is really good at this commentator thing. He spots the details, is knowledgeable, and is obviously excited and entertained by the sport. Great stuff!
Oh and the race itself was fantastic of course Big Grin
  • 101 7
Came here to day the same thing, the Jackson-Warner combination is getting awesome. The parts where Elliot was giggling and Warner was shouting made for great viewing!

I agree, the last guy just seemed drunk all the time
  • 53 1
@Dlakusta: I'm not sure if that's supposed to be an insult or not because when Warner was drunk all the time on Freecaster it was brilliant.
  • 25 4
Jackson, Warner, Gee and Tracey are a great team.

I disagree, i find he does not compliment Warner whatsoever and defuses his the exhilaration gradually.
  • 18 2
@fartymarty: Gee definitely an improvement compared to the normal hotseat interviews. But seemed very obvious this time that they only ever interviewed the guy/girl on the hotseat if they were RedBull athletes.
  • 3 0
 @Dlakusta: you mean Claudio?
  • 11 0
@Dlakusta: Claudio was recovering from a brain injury.
  • 11 1
@humoroususername: drunk Warner was the best ever.
  • 3 1
@Trudeez: I just showed the wife his commentary video from champs 2011 where you can see him and Pagey. She thought it was the best thing ever and she didnt have a clue what was going on.
  • 4 0
@humoroususername: Oh I loved it, especially the part during Danny's run. Unforgettable Big Grin
  • 2 2
@dirtpedaler: It wasn't an injury that affected his speech or any other mental functions afaik. Also he never mastered the past tense and for that I will never abide him.
  • 7 0
@humoroususername: Warner's commentary is scarily professional now but the fluidity is back too. Hidden Stella Artois drip is what I'm thinking.
  • 7 0
IMO Red Bull TV also did its best job of camera placement and race footage yet. It was spectacular to watch
  • 5 5
nothing against Elliot, but I miss Claudio... Frown
  • 3 0
@Whatajohnny: I miss his track previews. Such a shame Red Bull stopped him from doing them after the Losinj crash
  • 5 1
@Trudeez: freecaster warner when I believe Bernard Kerr jumped over the tape on the final drop in leogang and was DQ’d, “that decision is more unpopular than a ginger haired step-son”

Loic Bruni getting squiffy on the gnarly wall about half way down Hafjell. The 90 right, down the super steep rooted out wall into a catch berm just before the little creek gap.. “Bruni is more all over the place than a monkey dry humping a beachball”
  • 5 2
Problem with Elliot is he takes me out of the action. It can be like watching a basketball game when the announcers are talking about sandwiches meanwhile someone just got dunked on. Rob always keeps you emotionally tied to what's going on no matter what he's talking about.
  • 3 1
@Mr-Gilsch: not agree. The camera on the rock frontal view... Cutting the landing many times... And no slow mo front view from the dubbies... Also some drone footage to better appreciate the huge crowd... Really could be better but its true was quite good too.

Finn so stoked about beating Loic.lol
  • 25 0
 understandable
  • 17 0
Shit, so am I! Loic is my hero, but damn I want to see Finn take one.
  • 4 0
Finn was an "under dog" last year, cool to see him podium
  • 6 0
Fast lane cancelled, Finn finally beats Loic straight up, coincidence?
  • 2 0
loic is all: "I'll beat that little punk ass canadian all the rest of the year, so shut up!"
  • 9 0
 @loam33: Probably lol

But man, Finn is looking stronger than we've ever seen him. Might not be an easy task to beat him this season, even for Super Bruni
  • 3 0
@ViolaVesperlin: I agree, he seems much more confident
  • 3 0
@LucasCYCLES: it's amazing that Finn can be considered an underdog though, when think about how long he has had red bull and factory support. Racing seasons of world cup tracks before he was even in Junior category. Looks to be matching his speed with an ability to keep it pinned, not binned
  • 4 0
@G3V162F: he doesn’t only seem more confident he seems a chunk more filled out. Dude wasn’t scrawny last season but this year he’s put on some muscle mass too in order to man handle that rig around the rougher tracks and boy does it look like it’s paying off!
  • 103 0
When he’s on it Amaury is absolutely one the wildest, most exciting riders to watch. Stoked Luca got in the top 5. Looks like the team change did him some good!
  • 14 0
Luca looked really fast, stoked as well
  • 4 0
If you watch Brendog's YT, he's behind Luca on a practice run and you see can see how dialed Luca had that top section

Interesting to hear Myriam talk about serious concussion symptoms and racing anyway. Good thing she made it down without crashing, but shouldn't the UCI do a medical check-up after crashes to prevent this? In F1 or MotoGP you go to the med centre after a crash and an independent doctor decides if you race...
  • 12 1
thats what she did she explained in the interview at the end!
  • 12 3
Seems a bit lax on the UCI's part if that's the case
  • 13 2
Yeah seemed pretty bad to me. Imo it doesn't seem like a good idea to race within hours of getting a concussion
  • 18 0
@sorryiamtheboss: no doubt. Compounding concussions are really really bad. Luckily it didn’t happen but a little too risky for me. Just goes to show that concussions still aren’t super well understood and even in the medical community there can be a level of complacency with them.
  • 16 2
In F1 they also fly you straight to the hospital in case of a crash....the UCI let you wait for hours in the wood with a broken backbone...
Anyway, not a smart decision from Myriam regardless the result (great)
  • 1 0
 Double post
  • 14 0
@flowisforpussies: concussed people aren't known for their smart decision making to be fair...
  • 9 5
She also said she took a nap after the crash which is a horrible thing to do after a concussion.
  • 10 0
@OldManClemens, that’s incorrect - they’ve changed the recommendations, and it’s fine to let someone with a concussion sleep.
  • 2 0
I thought the exact same thing.
  • 3 0
@slumgullion: I was about to call BS on this but it does look like you are correct. Interesting how this change of protocol hasn’t been widely disseminated into the general public. It reminds me a bit about how the guidance about introducing babies to peanuts changed between my first and second kids. *shrug emoji*
  • 3 0
@waxed: Yeah, but didn't she say that she had CALLED her doctor? I mean I would be far form assessing TBI over the phone... Or maybe I didn't get all that she said...
Also during her run she was more sketchy than usual, the concussion might wave been the reason for that. I'm sooo glad she didn't crash again in her race run!
  • 1 0
@chmurka3rg: Yes, she said the team doctor.
  • 2 0
@Giddyhitch: also some of the new research is suggesting that light exercise is the best for recovery, not the dark and quiet environment as previously recommended. But obviously with cabaret of no chance of injury so something like a static bike I guess. Again though, doesn't really seem to have been made particularly public knowledge
  • 47 0
That was a wild save from Myriam... Exciting. Great to see do see downhill again.
  • 7 0
I woulda just rolled the rest of the way after a save like that. That front wheel went into the off-camber. If you freezed it there any person would have thought she was a gonna. Second only to Rachel's tank slapper save at Fort Bill years ago.
  • 13 0
Mad respect to pompom but what’s the crac with concussion protocol in dh?
  • 9 0
@CantQuitCartel: as someone living with post concussion syndrome the last 8 months I can tell you it’s no joke. Until you actually live it,everyone THINKS they know how bad it is!!
  • 4 1
 @iamamodel: She was gonna what?
  • 4 2
@mikelee: can’t remember which podcast it was in but Euan from action sports medical was talking about setting up concussion protocols in mtb. Guessing it can’t be up and running in dh though if you can just sleep it off then go race with out having to actually pass anything.
  • 11 0
@CantQuitCartel: yeah it’s not being treated seriously still. My concussion set in 3 days after the impact. 8 months later im still dealing with it day to day.

@mikelee: I hear you man. I had a non-bike-related, pretty mild impact. Shrugged it off, didn't start showing symptoms until a few days after. Took me half a year to get my life back to normal. Not even every doctor takes such a thing seriously.
Wishing you a good recovery!
  • 1 0
@tim-from-pa: Yeah that one! I can see it in my head and the white rocks seems like Fort Bill. That's two 'Whoops' from me in set of replies to a comment. I shall go sit in the corner...
  • 1 0
@ak-77: what I used to think concussion was and what I now know it is and can be are miles apart. My recovery is happening but at such a slow pace it’s barely noticeable day to day but I’m better than I was that’s for sure! And from my experience doctors and experts know pretty much nothing when it comes to understanding the brain and it’s healing process.

This race was insane, women field is getting better and better, love Camile win,she looks very strong in her bike, hard to beat when she put together such a run!
Love to see Finn doing well and enjoying his time there.
Insane run from Pierron, truly awesome to watch. It was a gift to all fans, smooth race with no rain/snow all riders could do the best they have.

Top 4 women were in a brawl! Tighter times then the men. This season is going to be amazing

Yeah Team Canada! Watch out for Jackson and Gracey when they hit the elites! West Coast Best Coast!

I won't disagree with you but do you have to rub it in?

Don't think Cami expected that, no celebration at all just walking around looking lost and trying to find someone to hug! What a run! Always good to see an upset to the norm!

"no celebration at all just walking around looking lost and trying to find someone to hug"

aren't we all
  • 3 0
@nikifor88: yes we are. Sadly we don't win worldcups before we look for hugs
  • 6 0
Come on, obviously she was looking for Emilie. You're thinking about it too much :p
  • 20 4
 I’m in love with Cami
  • 6 9
Had her as my #1 on my fantasy roster. That’s a huge start!!!
  • 5 7
@swellhunter: I have both Camille as well as Myriam on my roster. If Gee and Kaos also take the top two spots, I'll be leading the fantasy series. Halfway there Smile .

And yeah, Camille seems like a beautiful person. What we can probably all learn from her is to learn about yourself and play to your strengths. It is clearly paying off for her and once she retires I can imagine she'll be the best coach or team manager you can have.

Bummer for Maes to go off right at the start, but the rest of his splits were fast AF! Love to see him do well and excited for the rest of his season
  • 4 0
Agreed. They need to let him use a DH bike though until Orbea produce one themselves.

@thenotoriousmic: time to call in Neko and Frank!
  • 15 0
Gee was super professional. Loved hearing him interview the riders.

Way to go Finn! You finally beat Loic. They should make one more episode of Fast Life so you can bug him, lol.

  • 2 0
@Number29: wonder if that's something discovery will change next year
  • 10 0
Have to confess, I was really curious what a difference the completely new Intense bike was going to make for Gwin and his team. After looking at all the results, is it fair to say - it's not about the bike?
  • 31 2
Hard to say it because gwin brought a level of training and professional decorum to the world cup circuit, but he just doesn't have it like the young guns do. He's definitely still fit and strong, but he doesn't have the finesse to work the bike down against the best anymore. He's gone the way of the dinosaur, kind of like gee. It really highlights how much minaar works at it though. Man is the goat
  • 5 0
Would have to agree. That said, while it is only one race, he had much better results on the ole M29 than any of the proto rigs to date. Perhaps the psychology of always tinkering is at play here too

@Breeconay: Your mad if you think Gwin doesn’t still have it. He’s got some things to work out clearly but he’s not past it. All he needs is a few good results to get his head back in the game and he’ll be right back at it.
  • 23 0
@thenotoriousmic: gwin wouldn’t have even been top 3 in juniors today. The past 3 seasons he’s had two top 5s and hasn’t won in 4 years. Sure he’s had injuries but the riders have gotten very fast since his last win. Guys like Pierron, Daprella, Illes, and vergier can’t even put in a clean run half the time they push so hard to win. Gwin changed the game but it’s been changed again and he can’t seem to catch up.
  • 9 1
@thenotoriousmic: Connor Fearon beat him on an enduro bike ... Come on ... They are in deep sh*t, no proto bike can help them now cause it's apparant that they don't have good enough riders to be on top. Gwin was a great rider but lost it many years ago, it's hard to believe he could come back.
  • 18 1
I was amazed at how well Dak piloted that Soviet-era metallurgy down the track.
  • 4 0
@Daledenton: didn't he nearly die in practice? He's had too many bad spills in recent times. Headgame?
  • 5 6
@lkubica: You don’t lose it over night. I’m not a Gwin fan at all but to say he’s not capable of winning a World Cup is laughable.
  • 7 0
@thenotoriousmic: Overnight? The guy has been out of it for multiple seasons now. He'd need half of the elite field to have absolutely garbage runs if he's to have a prayer at taking a WC win again.

@Odinson: LOL. How short is you memory? 5X World Cup champion and dominated. I agree completely that he’s got a lot of work to do but on paper he’s still the best rider and easily capable of winning a World Cup.
  • 5 0
@thenotoriousmic: Every world champion in any discipline eventually goes away. Nothing lasts forever and 5 years of winning is definitely a great career. Greg is the only exception here but his time is also coming.
  • 3 3
@lkubica: I agree completely but that time hasn’t come yet. Like you said Greg has shown what’s possible and Gwin is 7 years younger. Not a Gwin fan at all but I’m confident he’s more than capable of winning more world cups especially since nobody’s stepped up and filled the void he left when he fell back.
  • 4 0
@thenotoriousmic: I like the guy and shared your view until recently, but this might be the definition of wishful thinking. Greg is a total outlier.
  • 3 0
@BenPea: I’m indifferent to Gwin. I’m not cheering him on and I'm not pissed when he wins but think it’s too soon to write him off after what he’s shown he’s capable off and don’t forget Greg had long dry spells also where he was supposedly past it. One good result and can change everything. We’ll see.

@Daledenton: married...does he have a kid yet? That will def slow u down as your 'life picture' =big change!

Sea to sky / sunshine coast domination, Holy shit!!

A few years ago I remember seeing a little redhead kid at the coast gravity park riding every shuttle and absolutely shredding.. and she's now topping podiums. Amazing

It was insane watching how dialed in Finn and Loics suspension was! Definitely in another league compared to the others with how composed they were

wow that was very very exciting couldn't be happier for pierron finn has grown so much as a rider- looks like a gnome with the specialized helmets tho as all ways cant fault rob and eliot but rob please stop interuppting lmao

Unfortunate that Neko DNQ after all that hard work recovering from that broken pinkie finger
  • 6 0
It’s interesting as everyone expected Vali to smash times by a huge margin. Seems like she is not that much of a wunderkind as everyone trying to make her beforehand. This is with no disrespect to her performance but even as a fan being an Austrian myself I have the Impression that there was just way too much pressure on her with all these „smashing times expectations“ maybe commentators should reduce to more casual semantics when talking about promising young guns in the future…

 Stoked for Goldstone
  • 3 0
Goldstone one to watch and will be at the elite podium in no time. How old is this kid. 16?
  • 2 0
@calarco68: 18. But since he was born in February he is technically a junior still. They base it on a riders age on Jan 1.
  • 1 0
Yep... his time would have put him in 11th place in the elite field. Course is much more blow out for the elites... but still... he's fast!
  • 1 0
@islandforlife: yeah, interesting that Neko said he thought the juniors had a harder course because of the wet morning dew.
  • 3 0
What a wild ride!!! I didn’t realize I was watching these updates roll in on real time until I saw the timestamp! What a rush to read that Loic was fast at the second split and then have to refresh the page to see what happened next!!!

If you can read the PB text feed, why not check it out live with visuals and sound at redbulltv.com? It another dimension or 2......

Super proud to be a Canadian and BC resident! Great results team Canada!

Canyon’s racing program seems to be very effective! Including the enduro’s. Anyway, would there be other factors that allowed Luca to shine brighter?
  • 2 0
Can someone clue me in please? What is the Nr column, new overall ranking? What's the P in the first column beside some riders?
  • 2 0
Nr is the position in the standings coming to the race & P means they're protected for qualy
  • 1 0
Hahaha Loris Vergier surely wishes he would have been on a full 29er bike instead of a mullet after sliding out in an off-camber corner like that and thus also losing all hope of winning the race.

@bgoldstone: Bold prediction. This ain't timed training we're talking about.
  • 4 0
@mi-bike: not that bold. She took the bronze last year after coming off an injury and only doing one WC. More experience should see her land on the podium again and top step isn’t out of the question. But anything can happen in racing.
  • 2 0
I just want to know where Jackson goldstone ends up time wise vs the elite riders.
  • 7 2
 Top 60
  • 1 0
@mi-bike: i would put my money on that prediction...
  • 4 0
2:52.584 puts him theoretically just outside the top 10, slotting in ahead of Dakotah Norton.
  • 10 0
And he beat Minnaar in his first race with the new team!
  • 7 0
The track would have been in better shape when Jackson went down, maybe enough to make a meaningful difference?
  • 4 0
He would had been 11th ahead of Norton, if i'm correct according to posted time.
  • 3 0
@ABhardtail: Probably, but a bigger impact would be the massive increase in mental pressure that comes with being in the elite field.
  • 3 0
Dennis Luffman in 31st. Great first race stepping up from Jrs.

So stoked to see Luca up there. For a minute i thought He had pulled it off. IMO Finn and His runs looked the best in control with that much speed.

 What happened to Chris Grice?
  • 3 0
He is elite. However he injured his shoulder in qualifying.
  • 4 0
@Sugarbrad: almost completed his run with an injured shoulder and a destroyed rear tire, gave up in front of me just before hitting the woops. Dnf. Must have been a painful run...
  • 3 0
@JackyStyleTom: apparently dislocated it someone without going down. I would not want to hit those whoops with a dislocated shoulder. Feel bad for the local kid at his first elite race, and this is coming off an injury last year.
  • 4 0
@JackyStyleTom: Indeed, checked on him yesterday and he's in good spirits despite the bad luck. We are all thinking about him at GFORT and wish him a speedy recovery.
  • 1 0
@pisgahgnar: I checked and there is no dirt on his kit.. I didn't notice it at first! www.pinkbike.com/photo/22285973
  • 1 0
@pisgahgnar: Woops were not a problem for top guys but definitely an issue for the others. I stayed there for a couple of minutes at the end of qualifying (plates 110 to 130) and witnessed 2 heavy crashes...
  • 3 0
@JackyStyleTom: he posted on instagram that the shoulder popped out, no crash.

Yet another race with barely any women getting screen time. Lots of build up... followed by barely any racing. How are any women supposed to make a living in this sport with no screen time? Sports like tennis are a perfect example that if you actually make a point of showing the woman's competition in equal footing, it will eventually see the same viewing numbers. There is an opportunity for discovery to really up the game here.
