Phoebe Gale looking for a back to back win.

The fourth round of the 2022 downhill World Cup is underway at Lenzerheide. In the Junior Racing, Gracey Hemstreet laid down another rapid run to pull ahead of the fastest qualifier Phoebe Gale by just under two seconds. Jenna Hastings wrapped up the top three, five seconds back. Kicking off the day for Pinkbike Racing Aimi Kenyon makes another podium appearance in fifth place. For the Junior Men, it was Jackson Goldstone who came out on top and went one and a half seconds faster than Lachlan Stevens-McNab. Jordan Williams went fastest in the first two splits but lost time on the second half of the track and ends the day in third place.

Myriam Nicole put together an absolutely wild run on the dusty and blown-out course to secure a massive win of over four seconds. Camille Balanche improved upon her top qualifying run but she just didn't have the speed to match Myriam. Eleonora Farina was the only other rider within nine seconds of the winning run and completes the top three. Pinkbike Racing's Léona Pierrini finished the day in 12th place.

The Commencal team takes a clean sweep of the Elite racing as Amaury Pierron speeds into the top spot by over 1.4 seconds. Finn Iles had been the man to beat for a large portion of the race but it wasn't enough for the win. Greg Minnaar has a great run to take third place and even beat Amaury in split two. Finally, PB Racing's Thibault Laly made the live feed and ended the day with a great 29th place.

Check out the results below.

Live Race Updates:

Stay tuned for live updates and results from the Lenzerheide DH World Cup

The Elite Women's racing kicks off at: PDT 03:25 / EDT 6:25 / BST 11:25 / CEST 12:25

The Elite Men will start at: PDT 6:45 / EDT 7:45 / BST 12:45 / CEST 13:45

Elite Women

First up in the Elite racing is the Women and today marks the racing return of Rachel Atherton who last raced in 2019. Rachel managed to get seventh in qualifying yesterday and we can't wait to see what she can do today. Camille Balanche had a big run yesterday and went fastest by over four and a half seconds, Camille is flying this year and will be tough to beat.

Rachel Atherton's Qualifying Run POV:

With Rachel back between the tape you can check out her qualifying run POV. The last time Rachel raced in Lenzerheide at the 2018 World Champs she took a massive victory of almost 10 seconds.

Who do you think will win?:

Who Will Win the Elite Women's Race?

This poll is closed

Who do you think will win today's racing? Can Camille Balanche back up her fastest qualifying run, or will we see someone else take the top step of the podium?

Race Updates:

3:34 am PDT Louise Ferguson sets the first time today with a 3:37.657. We still have a ways to go before we beat Camille Balanche's qualifying run of 3:18.898.

3:35 am PDT Pinkbike Racing's Léona Pierrini goes into the lead, 0.5 up on Louise Ferguson.

3:38 am PDT Anna Newkirk is the next rider to take the lead, building a gap of over five and a half seconds.

Top five with 10 Riders Left

1st. Anna Newkirk: 3:31.516
2nd. Siel Van Der Velden: 3:34.713
3rd. Léona Pierrini: 3:37.114
4th. Stacey Fisher: 3:37.346
5th. Louise Ferguson: 3:37.657

3:46 am PDT Jess Blewitt is the first of the top 10 riders and she goes across the line 1st after her first race run of the year. Jess just pulls ahead by only 0.016 after being behind the whole way down the course.

3:48 am PDT A flat tire for Nina Hoffmann and a small crash puts her back in seventh so far. What this does mean is that if Camille Balanche doesn't win then we will have a new winner today.

3:50 am PDT Mille Johnset goes fastest by 1.19 seconds. Mille takes the fastest time in splits 2,3 and 3.

3:53 am PDT After three years away Rachel Atherton flies into the lead going green at every split. Rachel goes five seconds up on her qualifying run but this is will around 10 seconds behind Camille's time from yesterday.

3:55 am PDT With crashes at the last two races and in qualifying, it looks like Vali Holl may have had another incident as she loses over five seconds in the second split. By split three it was incredibly close but Vali managed to fight back in the last parts of the course to go into the lead by over four seconds.

3:59 am PDT Veronika Widmann goes into third place, six seconds behind Vali Höll as the course is looking very loose and dusty.

4:02 am PDT Eleonora Farina goes fastest at the bottom of the course and takes the top spot so far by 2.779 seconds.

Top five with 3 Riders Left

1st. Eleonora Farina: 3:20.184
2nd. Vali Höll: 3:22.963
3rd. Rachel Atherton: 3:27.460
4th. Veronika Widmann: 3:29.074
5th. Mille Johnset: 3:30.310

4:06 am PDT The newly crowned European Champ Monika Hrastnik just falls short of the lead after going into the finish 1.795 back. Monika currently sits in second place with two more riders to go.

4:10 am PDT A huge run from Myriam Nicole sees her take the lead and beat Camille's qualifying run by over seven seconds!

4:12 am PDT Camille is over one and a half seconds back at the first split. Myriam looked unstoppable on her run and it may not be beatable today.

4:15 am PDT We have a new winner in 2022 as Myriam Nicole wins in Lenzerheide! Camille Balanche goes across the line four seconds back and into 2nd place.

Elite Men

Closing out the racing is the Men and we are in for a massive fight as yesterday's qualifying was incredibly tight. The course is looking very dusty after the previous races and this could make things tough but after Myriam's rapid performance we could have some wild runs. Amaury Pierron managed to come out on top yesterday but he did not have the best times in every split so there are plenty of chances to find more speed today.

Inside the Tape:

Before we get to the last riders check the lines Ben Cathro has found out on the course.

Who do you think will win?:

Who Will Win the Elite Men's Race?

This poll is closed

Who do you think will win today's racing? Will we see Amaury or one of the top qualifiers take the win? Could we even see a shock performance from someone outside of the top 30 starting riders?

Race Updates:

Top five after the first 20 riders

1st. Tuhoho-Ariki Pene: 2:51.455
2nd. Phil Atwill: 2:53.691
3rd. Lutz Weber: 2:54.084
4th. Dante Silva: 2:55.789
5th. Oisin O Callaghan: 2:56.063

Top five with 30 riders left

1st. Tuhoho-Ariki Pene: 2:51.455
2nd. Antoine Rogge: 2:52.419
3rd. Henry Kerr: 2:52.806
4th. Phil Atwill: 2:53.691
5th. Lutz Weber: 2:54.084

5:11 am PDT Tuhoto-Ariki Pene's time is holding so far and while it is faster than Amaury Pierron's top qualifier we are still a second back from Jackson Goldstone's winning run.

5:17 am PDT Aaron Gwin goes into the lead by 0.365 seconds. The Intense bike seems to be running better after we saw Dakotah Norton take second in qualifying.

5:21 am PDT Despite still struggling with his injury from Fort William Loic Bruni is back racing and manages to ride down to sixth so far.

5:23 am PDT Laurie Greenland will be disappointed with his run as he is already back in ninth place.

Top five with 20 riders left

1st. Aaron Gwin: 2:51.090
2nd. Tuhoho-Ariki Pene: 2:51.455
3rd. Antoine Rogge: 2:52.419
4th. Dylan Levesque: 2:52.517
5th. Connor Fearon: 2:52.556

5:33 am PDT Danny Hart comes the closest to Aaron so far but he is still 0.3 back. It's wild that we haven't seen anyone beat Jackson Goldstone yet.

5:38 am PDT Angel Suarez was on a run that could have beaten both Aaron Gwin and Jackson Goldstone but after tapping a tree he goes into fourth place so far.

5:42 am PDT Finn Iles puts the new Specialized into the top spot so far by a massive 2.5 seconds. Whatever changes they have made are clearly working for him.

5:45 am PDT Greg Minnaar looked smooth but it wasn't quite enough to beat Finn and he loses time at the bottom of the track to go 2nd by 0.3 seconds.

5:48 am PDT Bernard Kerr keeps on it all the way down to push Aaron Gwin outside the top three and slots in behind Finn and Greg, two seconds back.

5:57 am PDT Charlie Hatton was right on Finn Iles until the bottom part of the track where he lost a bit of time. Charlie's run was still fast and he goes 1.8 back and into third.

6:00 am PDT A small crash for Brook MacDonald pushes him down to 37th so far.

Top five with 10 riders left

1st. Finn Iles: 2:48.555
2nd. Greg Minnaar: 2:48.858
3rd. Charlie Hatton: 2:50.410
4th. Bernard Kerr: 2:50.653
5th. Aaron Gwin: 2:51.090

6:10 am PDT Thibaut Daprela just makes it into the top five, 2.1 seconds back from Finn Iles.

6:17 am PDT Matt Walker goes 1.4 back and into third place with six riders left. Finn's time is looking strong but he wasn't fastest at every split so there is still room to improve.

6:21 am PDT Andreas Kolb posed a real threat to Finn Iles but a slow bottom section dropped him to third place, 0.310 off the top time.

Top five with five riders left

1st. Finn Iles: 2:48.555
2nd. Greg Minnaar: 2:48.858
3rd. Andreas Kolb: 2:48.865
4th. Matt Walker: 2:50.001
5th. Charlie Hatton: 2:50.410

6:22 am PDT A massive crash for Luca Shaw! Luckily he is quickly on his feet and heading down the course.

6:27 am PDT Benoit Coulanges has a huge flat landing but it doesn't slow him down too much as he goes into fourth place, 1.3 behind Finn.

6:31 am PDT We have only two riders left and Finn Iles is still in the lead. Loris Vergier falls back to seventh place after being off the pace the whole way down. Finn has definitely put down something special today and it has to be a sign that the new bike is working well.

6:33 am PDT Dakotah Norton is over a second up at split three but he goes down just as he goes through the split!

6:34 am PDT There is now only Amaury Pierron left to beat Finn. We all know Amaury is one of the wildest riders at the World Cups and he is going to need something big to come out on top today.

6:35 am PDT The first split sees Amaury 0.362 up, let's see if he can keep this up.

6:36 am PDT Amaury is over 1.3 seconds up at split three! He was the favourite in our poll for the winner today but he still has the bottom part of the course where Finn was very fast.

6:37 am PDT Amaury Pierron wins in Lenzerheide by a massive 1.4 seconds!

Bummed for Norton, he was riding so clean!! Would have loved to see him on that podium today!
  • 8 10
I feel like it's unfortunately becoming a bit of his MO. Good qualy, looking fast...crashes or breaks the bike in finals. :/
  • 35 0
@wilsonians: At least he's going for the win.
  • 31 0
@wilsonians: Sounds a lot like Finn in the past few years. Great qualified and then ride himself into the ground Race Day. I think Finn's finally breaking out of that mode and the results are showing.
  • 18 1
I'm just glad he didn't fall off the bridge. OOOOOHHHHHHHHHH MYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOD
  • 3 0
@scott-townes: he might have grated his buttock in the wood though haha
  • 1 3
Here you undersrand the level of Pierron who can ride that fast without making mistakes being the last man on track
  • 3 0
@wilsonians: Norton and Shaw seem to always crash.
  • 87 2
I'm not normally one to complain about camera placement, but no shot of the key off-camber section in the woods at the top is frustrating. That's where the big time gaps have been.
  • 12 0
I know!!! was about to comment the same thing. Been amped to see some sketchy race run sends thru that section, but no dice I guess Frown
  • 23 0
Seems like a huge own goal by Redbull when they highlighted that part of the track in their pre-show but don't even put a camera there.
  • 7 3
 @mluk2004:

I thinks its more of an issue with it being at the top than decision made by red bull not to put camera there. Given how theres always more than one rider on track they are gonna show first few seconds of track and then the final minute or so.
  • 9 0
I'm sure it was mentioned on the @downtimepodcast pre-race show that cameras tend to be nearer the split time boards and where there has been infrastructure set up for previous years for media presence.
  • 3 0
@bikefuturist: they cut just cut the same amount of time from another place and leave the interesting part up top in
  • 4 0
@mluk2004: Swiss TV did the camera placement and filming this weekend, not RBMH, but often there simply isn't enough cable to cover an entire race track, or cameramen. Simple budget and manpower logistics.
  • 3 0
@captain23: that’s what I was thinking when I saw that Rob and Eliot were not on site but in the studio.. plus some of the track animations and green screens of the riders looked so bad it could not have been Red Bull Media. We’re all so gonna miss RB production when they’re gone.
  • 9 2
Hey RB. How about invite the worlds best 10-20 drone pilots to chase the riders down and score their coverage as a contest. Then we get the coverage we want, you get a venue for no additional cost, and you get another market with the same content. Just add a 5 minute pre show about nerd drone stuff and do another podium after the riders. Call it the RB WC Drone series. Based on what I’ve seen, this would be the cheapest RB initiative I’ve ever seen.

How is it that Redbull is full of non-sport stuff like gaming (etc) but can't include the top 5 male / female Juniors. I don't know where they can be seen - its pathetic, esp w/ the Jackson-Jordan neck-to-neck race and of course, Ami @ PB doing well. Sit back and watch some sick gaming dude - the Junior world cup atheletes are....offline

Anyone with little kids at home know how fucking wild that is for a mama like Rachel to even attempt racing let alone 6th place, holy crap awesome job!
  • 19 2
Yep, have 11 weeks old and I feel too tired even to even wake up! Hope Rachel is kind to herself as she is very competitive and celebrates this huge personal win!
  • 9 1
@Vermona: absolutely, congratulations to you. This parent life isn't easy just trying to drag myself out for a normal ride after no sleep last 4 nights (teething)
  • 12 0
My wife comes sprinting when I tell her Rachel is about to head down the track!
  • 52 3
One day, someone will tell the Red Bull camera operators, that you don’t actually have to frame the rider to fill the whole screen, nor, once you’ve done that, do you need to zoom the camera to follow them down the hill. Zoom out. Show the track! Ffs.
  • 5 0
Yeah do they have mountain bikers help them out at all? Prolly ski fillets thinking it’s the same thing. Ffs
  • 28 0
Well the good news is Discovery has the rights to the broadcast starting next year, and they are so notoriously cheap that I’ll be amazed if they even have a camera pointed at a mountain for any of the broadcasts.
  • 2 0
Normally it’s just freelancers doing camera work so probably will be the same guys doing the discovery stuff
  • 17 3
dude it's free coverage that is pretty good on the whole, be grateful. Next year it's going to be hot garbage so enjoy it while you can!
  • 16 0
@Brasher: seriously. I appreciate redbull while we still have it. Kinda scared whats to come.
  • 3 0
@Brasher: RB coverage is great. Hope next year will be good too.
  • 3 0
Was not a Red Bull production this weekend..
  • 2 0
 @stefkrger: explain?
  • 2 0
@Calumr1: Yup, it’s almost always freelancers in this industry, but the issue is not with them, it’s with Discovery itself. They’re cheap and don’t want to pay for proper gear/rates and try to do things as cheaply as possible across the board. Sure, they’ll still get the job done, but the crews are likely going to get screwed one way or the other.
  • 1 0
That was always my complaint with surfing videos and pictures. they rarely used to show any of the wave.
  • 42 1
Its great to see Rachel Atherton back on track even if its just to see how she feels about it all
  • 2 0
Yeah I thought it was a great performance, 4th in the first 2 splits, not sure if it was fitness or a mistake the put her back to 6th but coming back like that is truly impressive. Great to see her ride at a WC again.

That was insane, I need that slo-mo!
  • 3 0
Sickest scrub I've ever seen on a bike. I think he actually got a little too low and got popped a little off his line because of it, but pulling off that grip-to-the-ground manuever at that speed was over the top mental and likely got him fired up for the rest of his run.

What’s wrong with that? At least RedBull managed to find commentators with genuine excitement for the sport. This time next year you’ll be missing his commentary.
  • 18 0
@Muscovir: I don't think Supergeek was gripin! Im a huge Warner fan and have really enjoyed Eliot getting on air the past few years. So yea - now that MegaCorp has the broadcast rights, it looksl ike Warner's out - which is a huge blow. I'll still watch I suppose - and maybe they can at least include the top 5 Juniors but damn... how do ya have races w/o Warner?
  • 8 0
@Muscovir: Yeah Eliot and Rob are a great combo.
  • 5 0
@fartymarty: Agreed, I was thinking the same thing. They riff off each other very well.

If its true that Rob isn't going to follow the party to Discovery then I'll be greatly disappointed. The idea of watching a WC downhill without Rob Warner commentating is kind of depressing. It's hard for me to think of a commentator who is better suited for their role, it's just a natural fit.
  • 2 0
@jaytdubs: I was thinking of some kind of a petition to Discov./Chris Ball/EWS. I simply cannot agree with letting Rob and Elliot go that easy Frown I mean, there's so many of us here, it could work.
  • 3 0
@jaytdubs: Rob IS the voice of DH racing. It would be a massive loss if he wasn't commentating.
  • 1 0
@chmurka3rg: that's a fantastic idea, I'm sure we could get 80%+ of pinkbike's active commenters to sign on. There are few things we can all agree on, but my guess is that we can rally around this cause.

Aaron Gwyn seems definitely to be at a better pace now. Wonder how much comes from either new bike or his relocation
  • 12 3
Aaron makes bikes better... IDK how people haven't picked up on this yet, look at his time at spesh specifically by the time he left that bike was 100% different than it started. Intense is behind the times and modernising with gwin, just listen to the recent pinkcast with him, he literally talks about how he basically told Intense to GTFO with making him build on VPP(yeah i spiced it up a bit). But he really did push to build on a new platform.

Domination will light a fire under the competition. Amaury won't slow down but I think Bruni, Iles, Walker, Daprela (among others) have the skill and drive to step up to the challenge. He was stopped in 2019 after all

(this is coming from a Pierron super-fan btw)

@IsaacWislon82: it seems to me like the difference with Pierron is that his risk acceptance level is higher than the next down the line. We then get a guy that is amazing technically (not the only one here), very strong and fit (one of few it seems to me) but then this combined with the ability to do the whole run completely on the edge of annihilation

Pissing in the wind here (and post this as a reply above) but remind me how it is that Redbull is full of non-sport stuff like gaming, music, breaking (the latter 2 are fine, gaming is not a sport) but they can't include the top 5 male / female Juniors world cup riders or even a 15-30 min blip about them?

It's a huge loss, esp this year with the Jackson-Jordan neck & neck race and of course, Ami @ PB doing well.

Sit back and watch some sick gaming bros & bras - the Junior world cup athletes are....offline

People confuse Red Bull with a cycling brand because they market themselves so well in each individual sport but in fact they are not really about cycling at all, or MX or any of the sports they claim to be giving people the edge in with their "sports drink".

They are all just labels they choose to sell their poison under after people stopped mixing it with vodka in the bars. Amazing how they made that jump really.
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: Totally get that (and have wondered identically for years). It used to be that Redbull & Jaegermeister was the latenite buzzdrink for my crew with my first memories of Redbull was on that it was Jolt 2.0.

But its not like the sports channel is run by the drinkmakers & all the people making sure the liquids flow. They have professionals media teams plus endless clips / other stuff (I could give 3 shits about auto / moto anything)...not seeing why 15-20 mins of Juniors racing, esp at the new levels is just not possible. Doesn't compute, even with marketers at the helm...not even 15 mins, after the fact?

Gaming isn’t a sport but it is very competitive. Also gaming makes more revenue than movies and all north american sports (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB) combined. Yes, combined.

 @GBeard: that’s sad

It’s speaks volumes about our society being lazy slugs.
  • 6 1
You can like video games and exercise, they aren't mutually exclusive.
  • 3 1
@GBeard: My point wasn't to bash gaming: game away & bang that cash, sure. Just saying the JR racers deserve some airtime… seems like as a rider you could support that? Just saying: theres zilch footage for them on Redbull but Im pretty sure a high number of riders are in the JR age group. Not a big ask
  • 1 0
I agree that juniors should get footage. I was just trying to illuminate why redbull would sponsor gaming. Mountain biking is a drop in the bucket in comparison.
  • 1 0
@GBeard: Hear that and yeah, agreed its money but what are the numbers really (honest question). Im not sure biking overal is that small vs gaming (?) tho DH must be
  • 2 0
The only info I could fine is from 2018 where mountain biking generated 7.3 billion in revenue. That is approximately 3.6% of video games. Downhill is an even smaller percentage than that.

www.marketresearchfuture.com/reports/mountain-bike-market-5165

Viewership numbers is probably a more reliable way to see where advertisement money is best spent and I am not bothering to look into that. My guess would be downhill is a very small percentage (less than 1%) of video games.
  • 1 0
@GBeard: Wow, that was fast - yr good. $7.3billion & we cant get 25 mins of JR’s runs. Still, I get the scale but does that know translates directly to Redbull (sales or contracts). Im not sure how industry sales / income etc translate proportionally to Redbull video hours, viewership, etc. Dunno - I just wanna watch the top 5 JR’s dammit! Seems like an easy ask… I guess I'll have to write a letter!
  • 1 0
@Mtn-Goat-13: Including juniors would make the coverage about 7 hours long. Thats just too long for 99% of viewers, even for hardcore fans.
  • 1 0
@Nuss-95: I'm not suggesting full coverage - just a top 5 recap or something. The burn 20 minutes each airing of the mens & women's elites with intro / background material - they could easily clip out 5 mins of that and show the JR's men/women 5 best runs or whatever. Totally doable, entirely possible and yeah, I'm daydreaming. I wouldn't be up for watching a full 2 hrs or so of JR's either - but the fact we're missing the podium on each is a gash.

Jackson another win and top 10 pro men time, Gracie smashed it in Junior women and Finn right back at the top, well done to our Canadian rippers and their hard hard work

Women: Balanche - 1.5 / 224 Nicole - 2.0 / 199
  • 1 1
If I'm reading it right, would this suggest that Finn and Myriam would win the overall?
  • 5 0
@njparider: No, you're reading it wrong.

What happened on the drop that the announcers hinted to in the woman's field?

Was it just me or was Elliot constantly talking over rob warner and then going on and on. Then when it was time to break down the run he had nothing to say.‍♂️

Check her IG. Knocked unconscious at mega avalanche. Entire field rode past/over her while she lay on the track. Pretty horrible to see.

I'm sorry. I hadn't heard. I thought someone was out of the loop on why she wasn't racing. Turns out, I'm the one who doesn't know what they're talking about. My apologies and best wishes for quick recovery!
