The EWS has today announced it will be postponing the first two rounds of the 2020 series until November.

Although South America has not been too affected by the virus, Colombia has this morning announced it will be asking visitors from France, Spain, Italy and other affected countries to self-isolate when they arrive in the country. With no end in sight for the spread of the virus, the decision has been taken to postpone the events until the end of the year.

Round 3, due to take place at France's Montagnes du Caroux on May 23, is still scheduled to go ahead.

The full release from the EWS is below:

Press Release: EWS

The Enduro World Series (EWS) has announced that the first two rounds of the 2020 season in Colombia and Chile have been postponed in an effort to help contain the global spread of Covid-19 (coronavirus).

Round one scheduled to take place in Manizales, Colombia at the end of the month has been moved to the weekend of 7-8 November whilst round two that was due to take place on April 4-5 in Farellones, Chile will now take place on 14-15 November 2020.

South America currently has a very low incidence of confirmed cases of Coronavirus, but with riders travelling to the events from across the globe the decision has been made to delay the races until later in the year in the interest of everyone’s safety.

bigquotesIn order to best protect all staff, riders, fans and act in the most responsible way possible in the world’s current situation, we have made the decision to postpone our first two rounds. We hope the early decision of this date change helps to remove stress from a situation that is causing us all a great deal of difficulty. We look forward to getting our season started in May and thank all of our partners and staff for their support in these challenging times.Chris Ball, Managing Director of the EWS

bigquotesThe planet faces a fairly delicate health situation. This situation has globally affected multiple massive events, mainly sports. For the global well-being of athletes and spectators, and for recommendations of local, national and world authorities it is out of our hands and we have no choice but to delay the EWS Manizales. The party is postponed!Jorge Mario Jaramillo, round one Race Director

bigquotesWe as Montenbaik see this as an opportunity, since we will have the last race of the year of the Enduro World Series. This gives us more time to surprise everyone even more with the best trails and a high-level event.Ignacio Barboas, round two Race Director

More details about the postponed races will be available in the coming days on www.enduroworldseries.com.

If only there was some really hyped bike, that was extremely unique, that everyone wants a review of...

There is plenty of material to write articles about. However, I have thought about the kickstand. They can make a device to connect to a crank arm that has a telescoping rod to prop up the bike.
  • 2 1
@mikekazimer: don’t sleep on the small brands like Terrain Control Industries. I feel like there could be a whole video/web mini series devoted to small brands that the bulk of the riding market has t even heard of nor seen. And it’s a shame, because they legit have designed a great bike but have no market clout yet.

They actually make crank kickstands that are permanently attached to the crank. They look like funny little antennas on either side of the crank.

 @WAKIdesigns:
I think I will skip the crank kickstand trend that will be starting soon.

Though I could see a slick kickstand of some sort being popular on e-bikes, as I imagine they are far more annoying to lean up on stuff, due to the extra weight.

Probably it is for the best, there are only 9 cases in Colombia and 17 in Chile. However, athletes sharing water bottles could increase these numbers.

Organized and booked for a group of 4 us in total. Was looking forward to racing this all winter. Going to be a massive headache to attempt to reorganize this late. Not even sure if we’ll be able to get all of our money back or make it happen for the rescheduled date. Devastated to say the least.

 Travel insurance?
  • 3 0
@enduroNZ: We do have it. Spent most of the day looking into what will be covered. Haven't been able to get a hold of anyone to confirm as I'm sure they're dealing with a lot of similar cases around the world right now. From what I can tell, it looks like until there is an official travel advisory for Canada or Colombia it may not be covered. Flights can be rebooked no problem but rental truck and accommodations for the month are the issue for us.

Positive part is that we're all healthy and living in a place that's not affected. Hopefully this pandemic ends soon!
  • 1 0
@stevestorey: if you paid with a credit card, you can go through them
  • 2 0
@ski-bike-repeat: Not necessarily, it’s the same deal with Visa which I did book almost everything on. If there’s no official travel advisory against going from either your home or destination country there is no coverage.

  • 7 0
@zaalrottunda: pretty sure it’s not racist to say it came from bats. Probably just racist if you say racist things while also saying it came from bats
  • 3 1
 @browner: Speciesism?
  • 3 1
@browner: Lol nope, I literally had people calling me racist because I pointed out the litany of health concerns that come from animals that are classified as rodents. Oh well, Pinkbike is becoming another triggered website that can't stand to think about anything that might offend their delicate sensibilities. I'm sure it's not a coincidence that China immediately banned the sale or consumption of bats and several other animals.

I split time living between the USA and Manizales, Colombia and I just flew home to Colombia yesterday and Immigration was already screening everybody entering with written forms on where you have been the last 14 days as well as Temperature checks for fever before being allowed to enter. This country will soon be on lockdown for anybody traveling from abroad so it was a good idea to make this decision now.
  • 3 2
We'll have to wait and see if they let you into Durango for the Tribe event. Wink

currently booked to fly into colombia this weekend (for 2 week holidays). based on what you're seeing there right now, should i be reconsidering? we're not (yet) considered a high risk country, and numbers there are currently low, but the way things have been jumping...
  • 4 0
@xy9ine: currently I’d say your safer here than almost anywhere else. The government and health department seem to be very on top of the situation and I’d say you’ll likely be much happier enjoying a few weeks away from North America. If you still come down hit me up with a PM and I’ll show you around Manizales.

Blaming 'the media' for everything is getting old.
The NBA is a multi-billion dollar entity.
They dont suspend a season because they saw an article on CNN ffs

Sick screen name though!

maybe pinkbike is not the right place to talk about it, but believe me and better if you start thinking that it will be better to stay at home. What the fuck you coronavirus is really a bad beast.
  • 4 0
Man that's gotta suck for any privateers. Travel Insurance policies won't cover pandemics, and airlines are being coy on what they're doing about refunds etc. Huge out of pocket for the teams and privateers that can't make the rescheduled races.
  • 21 18
At this point UCI and EWS may as well cancel the race seasons for 2020. If the reason for these cancelations of races is due to the whole Travel scare, why in the f*ck would it be any different by November?

This is just getting silly at this point.
  • 17 0
I suppose they are hoping this will have all ‘gone away’ by November.

At the moment, nobody has any absolutely solid info and each country seems to be treating this differently - the only thing that is clear is Italy’s death rate is over 800 out of 12000 confirmed cases so it seems the right thing to do to cancel / postpone stuff like bike racing.
  • 7 10
 @justanotherusername:
I am not so against the bans, cancelations or postponements but to think by November life will be back to normal is f*cking silly.
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: I’m with you on that, what I meant was nobody seems to have any concrete ideas about this thing at the moment so the whole November thing is nothing more than a hunch / best case scenario. I suppose the science will become clear as time goes on, but I can imagine different countries will continue to interpret this into action in their own individual ways, as with anything.

@justanotherusername: At the moment, 56 people per day die from Covid. Seasonal flu is killing 1027. This data is from the World Health Organisation. You have about as much chance of dying from Covid as you do measles - between 1-3%

Caution is a good standpoint - but i have never heard of a bad case of measles cancelling bike shows and expos.

In my opinion, most forms of media have used a virus as click bait and created levels of concern disproportionate to the actual threat.
  • 47 5
@Bustacrimes: I genuinely can’t believe people are still using comparisons to the ‘seasonal flu’ as a reason why taking mitigating measures against this new virus is a silly thing to do.

I really can’t be bothered to say more than the fact that in the USA in one year there are 34million cases of ‘flu’ with 20000 deaths - that’s right 34million cases. Use your imagination as to what happens if corona hits 34million Americans. At the low estimate of a 2% death rate that’s 680000 deaths.

Sure though, it’s just like the flu. All of the worried governments are scaremongering.
  • 19 1
@justanotherusername: you just can't get these dumb f*cks to merge logic and numbers. Let's say that a billion people have contracted the virus a year from now. That's a lot of dead people.
  • 5 1
@Bustacrimes: your math and logic suck....but dont disagree are politics involved at some level
  • 12 0
@Bustacrimes: there's a vaccine against measles and far more research on it than on COVID19
  • 7 1
Not a good time to get hurt in any place effected. In Italy now and I’m keeping it tame on trail. The local hospitals ICU is at capacity. Every ventilator is occupied handling the pneumonia victims.
  • 23 0
@Bustacrimes: Dude, the mortality rate you are referencing is an average across all ages. Where as the reality is the mortality rate is nearly 20% for people over 70. The r0 (Reproductive rate) of COVID-19 is also 3 times higher than the standard influenza. Meaning on average you will normally only give the flu to 1.3 people, COVID-19 has an r0 of 4 at it's worst observable case. This combined with the fact there is no one immune to it like normal influenza, and no "Seasonal" COVID-19 shot, there is good reason to implement control measures early. Even if only 20% of people globally get it, with a mortality rate of 2%, that's still 30 million deaths. Wash your hands you dirty bugger, because doing so may save your grandma and all her mates.
  • 6 0
@justanotherusername: can we vote this to the top.
Even the slowest of people should be able to see this math and understand.
  • 10 0
@jewellsack: not mention the current mortality rate in Italy is 15%.

You know who else is at a larger risk?

Obese people. How many obese people live in this country?

Alot.
  • 3 0
@Bustacrimes: another thing you don't seem to get is that this puts a huge strain on hospitals and health services. And guess what, people still get sick, injured and need treatment for other illnesses! So yeah, this is a big f'in deal!
