EWS racer and member of Gowaan Gals, Martha Gill, has had two Marin bikes stolen after thieves broke into her van.

The van was parked at the Tesco Superstore on Infirmary Road in Sheffield at 6:50 pm last night when 4 men smashed the side window, opened the side door and removed the bikes. They were later seen speeding away on two mopeds with the bikes carried on their backs.

Martha rides for Marin and had both an Alcatraz dirt jump bike and San Quentin enduro bike stolen. The Alcatraz has a blue and pink frame with purple pedals, blue hubs and a blue stem. The forks are black without decals and the tyres are tan wall without decals. The San Quentin has a grey and black frame with red pedals and cranks from Hope. Both bikes have some unique features so Martha is asking riders to keep an eye out for them on selling sites and to share her post on social media so that they become too hot to handle.

bigquotesI’ve just had my van broken into and 2 bikes stolen from the car park of Infirmary Road Tesco Superstore in Sheffield. I was in the shop for about 10 minutes and in that space of time 4 guys on 2 mopeds smashed my side window and took the bikes out the side door leaving it open. It happened at around 6.50pm (23/02). The bikes are as in these recent photos, my Marin Alcatraz and Marin Alpine Trail Carbon, not many about and completely custom specced, so they’re pretty unique! If you see one listed on eBay or some toerag rolling down the street on one or have any other info that could be helpful please send a DM to let me know!! Help me by sharing this post, especially if you’re in the Sheffield area/have Sheffield mates, let’s make them too hot to handle.

If you have any information on the bikes, get in touch with Martha on social media or contact the Police.

Stolen from Whalley Range Manchester 17.11.20

Scott Ransom 2019 920 heavily modified
Unfortunately I didn’t take a pic after I completed this build. But it was caught in photos of other parts as pictured.
It is the 2019 920 but with the silver/raw finish of the same 2020 one.
I had the horrible sand/brown/orange paint stripped and the bike clear coated.
So it has no branding either but it does have this protective vinyl skin www.dyedbro.com/products/viking
If anyone has done the same to their ransom, please show me pics that I can use to post.

Look out for any shoddy sprayed ransoms. I imagine they will probably strip and sell the parts and maybe respray the frame to sell later as that’s the most traceable
Serial no GW1805288

I feel you. This new year started beautifully for me. Someone broke into my Cellar and stole my mtb. Insurance company did great, but nonetheless, the feeling is horrendous. Not to mention that now I have to wait months for a new one
  • 4 0
@pakleni: my insurers screwed me. Dont use yellow Jersey
  • 1 0
@drmantistobogganmd: what's wrong Yellowjersey? Was looking at using them.
  • 1 0
@drmantistobogganmd: Well, here in Ch people tend to be over insured. However, I didn't have bike specific insurance (it was just normal household insurance) so I didn't expect them to cover in fully the amount from the bike invoice. Especially for a 4 years old bike. I expected them to pay only up to 2k. You can say it was some kind of the silver lining.
At least they bought me for life..
  • 1 0
@drmantistobogganmd: agreed, they were useless when I tried to use them a few years ago
  • 3 0
@Cowherd: if you read yellow jersey small print it basically covers nothing and if you do try to claim their website used to time out before you could finish filling in the form for me.
  • 1 0
@Abite: I've claimed for carbon crash damage from them and the bike was collected from my house the same week I put a claim in.
  • 4 0
@Cowherd: Trust me, just avoid them. Slow, not very nice staff, dont answer questions, try to trick you, constantly purposefully wasting time and hiding things from you.
  • 2 0
@Abite: same happened to me, everything is purposefully difficult
  • 3 3
minus 7? Why on earth would you?
  • 14 0
@pakleni: My bike deductible is 10 000. So if my bike is stolen, no money.

All this bike theft just makes me want to install bear traps, but with my luck i would catch myself.
  • 3 3
@fabwizard: I hope that registration plates will become mandatory and selling/buying without one illegal.
For now, I'm searching for some kind of gps tracker
  • 6 0
@fabwizard: Your deductible is 10K? That's crazy, why even insure them?!
  • 1 0
@superkeen: probably house insurance? I know someone that had a bike stolen. They reported it and their insurance said file your deductible ($1500 or something) and you'll get $250 back. Lol. What a racket.
  • 2 0
@superkeen: It is part of my house policy. My deductable for anything is 10 000.

So tree falls on my roof and damage costs 10500 to repair i get 500. Not worth the claim as my insurance would then likely go up by 500 annually anyway
  • 5 0
@pakleni: I think I am just going to put support your local red and white(Hells Angels) stickers everywhere.
  • 2 0
There are forums for stolen bikes by region
  • 3 0
@fabwizard: Mine was 200. Big Grin You should change your insurance company. 10k is just rude
  • 3 2
Or better yet, an article on 'How to prevent your bike from being stolen'. In this case locking the bikes together to something solid inside the van might have prevented it, or at least slowed them down and increased the chances of them being caught. Hope she gets them back though. 10 minutes isn't a long time to be away while shopping though, just shows you can never be safe enough.

@Pinkbike just needs to create a Stolen Bike section similar to Buy/Sell.
  • 1 0
@Patsplit: this is a great idea

@mikelevy - stolen bike section similar to Buy/Sell??
  • 2 0
@lognar: problem with that is you have to and check in there. It would be much better exposure and better luck of finding said bikes with something on the main page?
  • 2 0
 @Patsplit: ummmmm its there.
  • 1 0
@fabwizard: Ah, I see. It is a bit hidden. Maybe they could improve it to add some features?

Thankfully I've never had to use it. *crosses fingers*

Threads are oriented in a time based fashion, those with the highest traffic/most frequent post are at the top of the queue of the active forum thread, you can also subscribe to the existing threads. You are automatically subscribed to a thread you've posted in.

If your bike has been stolen, aside from the obvious local authorities, I'd suggest creating web search queries & adding them to your favorites tab. Marketplace platforms to consider PB BuySell, craigslist, kijiji, facebook marketplace, EBay, etc. for obvious keywords associated with your bike and checking them frequently.

It's a frustratingly violating experience, mine loss resulted in a long walk home from work one night & a frustrating insurance experience.

IDEA : Dropper remote is tied in to riders thumb print. If it's operated by someone else the dropper (powered by a CO2 cart in the frame) fires UPWARDS and impales the perp.

Two dudes, two mopeds, two bikes.

Trying to figure out the “setup”.

So one arm tightly around the midsection of your bro and bike slung over shoulder? Or sitting back to back and holding the bike with two hands?

Hopefully somebody got pics. Let the shaming begin. Shame.

In recent history I only hear these crazy stories from the UK - the country of bikethieves. On a sidenote: On a national German DH race in the 00 er years to bikethieves were caught by the Dh-crowd while stealing bikes on the campground - that was nasty (to all authorities: I was not there)
  • 9 0
They get away with it all the time and people buy the stolen parts, police doesn't care much about bike theft. Nothing is going to change.
  • 12 0
yes you are quite correct. Bike theft is rife in the UK and quite a lucrative earner from what i hear. Little to no consequence for it and whilst most of us despise it there clearly is a market of people happy to buy stolen parts/bikes. I rarely buy or sell second hand these days and only now if it's someone i already know.

I dont even keep my bicycles outdoors in a shed or garage anymore. They are kept in my home.
  • 11 0
 Good times! ( I wasn't there neither)

@losidan: I keep a cricket bat to hand. There will be a little bit of justice should they try.

@losidan: I heard owning a motobike in London is even more fun.
(For everyone who doesn't get it, try YouTube London crime epidemic)
  • 5 0
@HeManHunter: Do you think its a "its just a bicycle" mentality not realizing that some of these bikes are worth more than some cars on the road? I bet stolen cars get more attention.
  • 3 2
makes sense to be a bike thief as the police have zero interest and the stupid laws here mean stealing something from a out building aka garage shed and not the main house means even if there caught red handed by the police its basically classed as nothing they wont go to prision and will get a tiny fine that they dont even have to pay. thats what the police told me when i had 2 stolen. i found the pos(bike thief's not the police) and got them back no thanks to the police.
we also have a large gypsy community up north where i live and they can do whatever they like 100% with absolutely no reprocusions as the police are terrified of them. You have to have and do your own law and reprocusions.
there's a well known crime network of bike thiefs exporting to Romania for stripping down etc. hopefull the new borders checks will kill that off.
  • 1 0
Bike theft is very rampant in the US. They busted a huge ring of thieves a year ago on the West Coast that would go to every biking event and steal every bike they could. The thieves didn't even ride bikes. Additionally, we have regular break ins at trailheads all over the Tahoe area. I wouldn't dare leave my bike unattended anywhere, even locked multiple times to my truck.
  • 35 2
Just go old school, take off their hands, no more thievery for them.
  • 15 0
They can still gather items in their arms and run! So just to make sure, let's take their feet too.
  • 8 0
It doesn’t matter what the penalty is because the odds of the police even investigating, let alone getting some one in court are tiny
  • 3 0
Not need to go old school, just have to go to certain countries and your dream can come true in 2021.
  • 5 1
I think you can look to the countries who still use such practices and use them as a model for all governments to follow, right?

(Not that I live in the finest example either)
  • 13 3
Sorry for Martha. Obviously not an 'opportunist' theft. Social media is a double edged sword. Telling everyone what you're riding, when and where all the time helps promote your brand but also attracts the attention of thieves. Once they knew what vehicle the bikes were in they only needed a brief window to strike. Knowing the UK police won't do shit about it doesn't help either.
  • 3 0
remember a while back when bikes where going missing at BDS events an it turned out another racer was pinching em!
  • 9 0
Probably was an opportunist theft, as she's not usually local to Sheffield and I can't see a moped gang trailing her around the UK.
  • 1 0
@chakaping: Pretty easy to see shiny kashima from a tinted van window so I think you're right.
  • 2 0
Ya, Van's that dont look the part are best.
  • 2 0
Theres a good reason I didn't buy a van for my MTB vehicle. Most robbed vehicles out there!!
  • 2 0
 @nojzilla: what's your MTB vehicle?
  • 3 0
@streetkvnt-kvlt: Ford Kuga (explorer?) SUV. Couldn't afford a 'real' 4X4 so it was a choice of the Kuga or a nissan Xtrail for an affordable economical AWD. Pretty capable off road too, for an SUV ! I can fit two DH bikes, spares, gear an camping equipment in the boot. Get to Wales an back on a full tank at motorway speeds an not get stuck in a lumpy, wet boggy field. Dream rig would be a Nissan Pathfinder purely for the YUGE boot space. I don't like the idea of putting thousands worth of bikes on a rack for some numpty to shunt into or some chavy to nick while I'm paying for fuel etc. An didn't wan't a van as per my above comment. Tools, Moto's MTB's etc having a van (in the U.K anyway) is an invite to be robbed.
Luckily the Kuga has very blacked out rear windows, not that they would deter a pro thief but may put off the opportunist.
  • 4 0
@nojzilla: Here in the US, vans that look like they have tools in them (contractor logos or such) tend to get broken into a fair bit (power tools don't usually have non-removable engravings or serial numbers, and they all look alike, so they're really easy to pawn and hard to prove stolen). Same with vans that have bike shop/brand logos. My wife and I keep joking about putting some fake diaper service logos on our campervan...
  • 1 0
@g-42: Yep exactly that here. Seen some crazy examples like, entire side panels peeled back like a sardine tin!!
  • 1 0
@nojzilla: yeah the Kuga (or Escape as they're called here), sounds legit. Had a look at a 5 cyl turbo a while back but seller wanted too much $$$$ for it. Total props on blacked out windows too. I don't use bike racks either. Just chuck it in the back haha. I use to have a 1990 Pathfinder, solid as motoring and pretty grunty for a turbo diese 4WD but ultimately father time and rust killed it off. You don't want a Pathfinder, you want a Patrol, now they are massive. We have problems here with peoples vans/utes getting broken into for tools etc, even unmarked vans. Usual story of some dumbf*ck hoodrat stealing tools to hock for alcohol and weed, and/or using them to steal bikes/break into cars/homes.
  • 1 0
@streetkvnt-kvlt: Escape! I knew it was something like that! Do well to find a Patrol over here, also Nissan has stopped making the Pathfinder Frown starting to like the new Defender 2 seater, just waiting on me lotto win :'D
  • 12 3
I think we should start stamping big plate numbers on top of frames, so they are more difficult to sale when they are not the original owner. Of course they could still sale the parts but is more difficult than sale the whole bike hot. Opinions???
  • 35 2
There allready is kind of a number plate on every Bike. It's under your bottom bracket.
  • 1 0
@jamessmurthwaite: Doesn't the UK already try to achieve this with the National Bike Register ?
  • 6 0
@Sokolowski: Yes, but the French system associates the number with a name and address, which hopefully will be a detterent to bike thieves as marked bikes will be easy to return to owner, and hopefully people don't buy bikes with the tags removed/filed down (or are shamed by the community).
  • 6 0
@MancAndy: Yep, same idea but it's mandatory and the responsibility of sellers now in France
  • 1 0
@jamessmurthwaite: James, is there know-jow about, how it'll affect frame quality (especially for carbon frames) and how to change the "address behind the number" when ownership of the bike changes?
  • 13 0
@vhdh666: [please excuse my poor English] As you buy a new bike, manufacturer/LBS ives you an "ID" number. If you sell your bike, you'll have to report this sale to the national database (and provide this ID number). Same if you do some repair, etc. A lot of details are not known at this time and I look forward seeing how this will be done/handle with European direct-to-consumers brands (Canyon, YT...).
As far as I know, 3 different technical solutions (Bycicode, Recobike, Speed Marking) could be used, and some are not designed for carbon or Ti frame. Some French websites mentionned that few brands still haven't answered about which solution seems the most suitable. In a nutshell, stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks/months... Wink

The problem is that they make the money buy selling all the components and ditching the frame as that’s the only traceable part
  • 8 0
I got my bikes invisibly high tech security tagged by the police at a local event, they basically wrote my house number and postcode onto various components using a UV marker. This was great, but on the matt surfaces it was clearly readable in daylight, so when someone clubs me to death and robs my bike, they can then go back home and steal all my other bikes. Fortunately it washed off after the first ride.

 @JRevelator: thank you

@jamessmurthwaite: In good old thieve infested Brazil, there's a company doing that bikeregistrada.com.br (and they also sell insurance)

It always amazes me to see professional bikers with tens of thousands of dollars of bikes and barely any security at all, other than a car window. My first real bike got stolen five years ago because I'd used the "best lock" sold by Home Depot--which could be snapped in 20 seconds by the bolt cutters they sold one aisle over. Lesson learned. Go to Lockitt.com if you're in NA (I'm not affiliated). Buy a massive Pragmasis chain (16mm or 19mm) and a secure ground or shed anchor - you can fit them to vans and trucks too. I got a Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini lock (for the truck) and an Abus Granit lock for the garage, plus a great door lock. Get a motion alarm too while you're at it, so once you turn that on the bike will start wailing if it's jostled--great for in-vehicle storage. There are also GPS or bluetooth tracking gadgets you can buy but my personal experience has been that they're pretty annoying and harder to find a non-obvious spot to attach now that downtubes are used for dropper posts. I also got a few Hexlox keys for my wheels and dropper post from the Robert Axle Project so the obvious high-dollar items can't be quickly removed.

Sure, it's impossible to stop professional thieves - any lock can be picked and angle grinders will cut massive chains too. If Ethan Hunt is trying to steal your bike then you're probably screwed. But 99% of thieves are just looking for low-hanging fruit - high-value bikes that have minimal security. They're almost never going to break a car or shed window and then hack away with an angle grinder for 5+ minutes while a 120dB alarm is going off. Spend $450-600 on your bike security and sleep better at night.

Don't Vodafone in the UK sell something to track down you dog or kids, like a small dongle with a SIM. Slip one of these in a johnny with some bubble wrap and drop in the seat tube - instant tracking from your phone.
  • 4 0
pretty sure I've read elsewhere that the frame would block the signal, unless the frame is made part of the ariel. Thing is, a bike is such that anything like this could be removed in about 30 seconds by tea leaves that know what they up to. I did have a blue tooth key finder thing that was bloody useless. worked to a range of aboot 10ft, even then every body with a phone had to have the app and have it activated all the time. Also the battery lasted about a week with no warning on the app that it had run out
  • 25 0
Does it have to be in a johnny??
  • 4 2
@lacuna: coffee out me nose level lolz :'D
  • 3 0
Keeping it sufficiently charged becomes an issue. The Vodafone one has a 7 day battery life apparently. eshop.v.vodafone.com/uk/curve-gps-tracker#slate

I feel there's probably an opportunity for an emtb manufacturer to do something clever with it though.
  • 10 0
@lacuna: doesn't have to be 2nd hand johnny
  • 1 0
Yes they do, but you'll need to wait until 42.5mm seat tubes are the new standard (its ~42mm wide) and battery life of 7 days is an issue, I guess having a way to easily remove and charge it would be necessary. There are a few bar-end type GPS trackers out there but I'd imagine whoever moves carbon enduro bikes knows to check for these.
  • 5 0
arent apple doing some kind of new thing AIR TAGS? it is a bit odd that when a bike can cost more than the car its in that someone hasnt come up with a robust solution yet to tracking the cun.... i mean the bicycle down
  • 2 0
@nojzilla: im pretty sure composites are relatively transparent though so you could embed that sucker in there, maybe just metallics (im sure are faraday cage like)
  • 3 0
I work for Vodafone, yes we do sell it but it's far to big to be hidden in the frame
  • 3 0
This might work if loads of riders had them hidden in their frames. It uses the app on users phones to locate the tile when it’s out of your range. 3 year battery too. uk.tile.com/product/611642/sticker-2-pack
  • 1 1
@Compositepro: yes. Carbon fibre doesn’t interfere at all with radio signals. /sarcasm.
  • 1 0
@Compositepro: like others have pointed out powering the tracking device is likely the main issue. To have some kind of active tracking like gps, the unit would have to be powered so it would have to be recharged or have the batteries changed. If that’s the case then it hard to implant the device in the bike where it won’t be detected. If it’s just attached you the outside of the bike then most thieves would know yo look fit it.
  • 1 0
@sino428: I see the limitations for a longterm solution but if it broadcasts through the frame, dropping a device in the seat tube while you were travelling with your bike between races or for a weekend at a bike park could be some piece of mind
  • 1 0
@tomo12377: Yea it could work short term. I'm not sure about the signals though. I don't know if they could travel through the frame of if they would need to be mounted on the outside. I was assuming they could figure out a way to get something to work internally, but someone with better knowledge would have to weigh in here.
  • 1 0
@sino428: we just stick remote antennas on when we don't get the signal strength required. Would be easy to disguise one in a saddle/frame bag or something if you also put bits like a tube in there too.
  • 2 0
@secondtimeuser: I have one of those vodafone trackers. The battery life depends greatly on the frequency of polling intervals you assign the tracker. Whilst near real-time tracking is possible, it also comes at a cost of battery life measured in approximately 3/4 days. You can set much lower frequency polling intervals, e.g. every 15 minutes/hour/etc. which will improve your battery life but obviously make tracking a little less helpful, especially if tracking a moving target.

The trackers are not particularly small (not huge either), being disc shaped so your options for secreting one on a bike are really limited. Maybe a frame with a stash compartment could take one but that's about it. They come with a couple of carry options, one of which allows for strapping to your bike, and there's a decent 'outdoor' casing that attaches to a carabiner clip (that's the setup I use as I carry one when out riding; if I plant myself badly I can press the SOS button and my other half gets an alert on her phone and can see where I am on what is essentially google maps)

That being said, you can do some neat stuff with the trackers like geo-fencing so if they leave the designated fenced area boundaries you'll get an alert.
  • 1 0
@Afterschoolsports: show me where i wrote carbon or did you just assume all composites are carbon?
  • 1 0
@sino428: maybe the tech is out there to dynamo the shit of it and charge the battery , use some kind of motion activation dunno theres people out there probably working on this but lets be honest theres always a better thief just around the corner in to circumvent the security systems in The UK a stolen audi isnt worth much in one piece but take an Rs to pieces and you can make significant money in spares , same with catalytic converters they literally angle grind parts off the cars in the supermarket, bike parts are getting to the point where stealing those cutting them off and selling them is probably all over and done with in 20 minutes
  • 3 0
@Compositepro: Carbon composites are very good attenuators of radio signals. I am into high power rocketry and the telemetry signals for monitoring and tracking the rocket must be transmitted from outside the carbon fiber - plastic nose cone or antenna routed outside along body tube.
  • 1 1
@Compositepro: I don’t see many fibreglass bikes going round.
  • 1 0
@cberrya6e: i fall into the catagory of military manufacturing mainly composites
  • 1 1
@Afterschoolsports: you wont see the fibreglass that often gets dyed black that they often put into them it goes into areas where aluminium can often create corrosion issues like the seatpost and bottom brackets , ive done plenty of bikes in between the 10 years i spent in f1 and the time im now spending back in doing composites for sensor arrays on submarines , but just highlight where i said carbon fibre again
  • 1 1
@Afterschoolsports: and again where did i say there were i dont think your much of a concept guy are you
  • 1 0
 @cberrya6e:
Like i said its been done before where both signal carriers are embedded in carbon im absolutely stunned no one has done wire in composite yet though im sure they would one day it exists already is proven and you could slap the f1 or rally car tag on it for extra kudos , same with embedding rf transparent panels into carbon structural skins i was pitching a concept not deliveringa product
  • 1 0
@rsbromley: i always wonder about Tile but where to put this on or in your frame? i picture it not sticking well to the inside of curved tubing and/or the adhesive not being powerful enough to withstand the vibrations that we put our bikes through.
  • 1 0
@Clavdivs: see my above comment, they in no way meet up to there claims
  • 8 0
Bike thieves should do time in Alcatraz and San Quentin, not ride 'em.
  • 3 0
Yeah I live in London (bike thief central) had some lads climb over our back wall during lockdown, figured they were after my bikes, slept outback with an axe handle, and chased them off a second time! Now bikes locked up like Fort Knox and axel grease and barbed wire boosted security! Not cool but going to get worse before gets better due to increased poverty!
  • 3 0
Reality starting to look like the zombie movies.

Someone very wise once said , "There is no lower life form than a bike thief."
Oh wait, I said that.
Never mind.
  • 3 0
Lock your bikes in your car. I lock all of my bikes in the garage to the wall studs and I lock my bikes to the floor in my van. that way at least if they get in they have a whole other situation to deal with before they get back on the moped and speed away. Bikes always always always locked. No matter if they are in the garage, your car, or even your bedroom. Take a few seconds but will save you in the long run.

I stopped at the market to grab a snack after a ride, had the cable lock that came with my bike rack on my bike (giant mistake). During my time in the store (5-10min) somebody tried to cut the cable, they must have been scared off because they were 95% of the way there. (motherf*^%kers). Now I have my bikes locked down with a ridiculous giant chain lock (Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit), makes me angry everytime I have to use it. Bike theft should be = to car theft. (Grand theft transportation device). Second offense they should be left to the mercy of people that have had their bikes stolen, there would be no three time offenders.

I’m here before someone says slaughter or decapitate all bike theifs
  • 65 1
We should slaughter or decapitate all bike thieves.
  • 17 4
@Rocksanddrops: We should slaughter or decapitate ALL thieves.

Put these theifs away for the rest of their leifs.
  • 7 1
@mihauek: we should slaughter then decapitate EVERY bike thief

@mihauek: I stole a porno mag when i was a kid, occasionally ate pick and mix before i'd weighed them and downloaded a bunch of tv. Am i getting killed?

@pbuser2299: Yo, that's not stealing if you take something from somebody who's got a lot of money (e.g. shops selling pick and mixes)
  • 3 0
The order is hanged, drawn then quartered. Breaking on a wheel first tho.

@mihauek: Sick. Can I steal yetis off dentists then?

Such a solid and contributing rider too! gutted for her, hope she gets em back
  • 2 0
GPS trackers are actually pretty cheap (size of a nickel). If you have super expensive bikes I dont get why you wouldn't spend the extra money for a GPS tracker for them. Bike thieves make me want to break someones legs!!!
  • 11 0
Closer to the size of a pickle, than a nickle, but I don't want to be a dickle about it..

What’s the best one for bikes?
  • 2 1
The whole theft is likely for local gang respect and entry by kids being groomed. I don't think they'll be sold (although I'll keep my eyes peeled over the peaks in MCR).

Very sorry to hear about this and I hope Martha gets the bikes she needs for competing in 2021.
  • 1 0
Clearly it doesn’t diminish the absolutely galling experience of having a bike nicked, and in no way alluding to asking for it, but I’m curious if there was any markings, stickers or what not on the van to indicate it might be bikes inside. Otherwise we are dealing with goons just looking into every van in a car park.
  • 2 0
Seems unlikely that they didn't already know the van and what was in it.
  • 1 0
Theives just follow people home from trail centres . Pick the cars with the bikes they fancy hanging off the back or watch what’s going in the van . Mark the persons house with a cable tie ,
  • 4 0
Gutting, sorry for Martha, hope you track them down.

I feel gutted every time I here about these bike thefts. Hope she gets them back. Is it me or is the stolen bike per capita worse in the UK? I second @drmantistobogganmd idea above!

 www.sherlock.bike/en

You have to charge it often but it’s good. When the thief takes it in doors you’ll be getting GPS reflection so....that part sucks.
  • 3 1
who keepds downvoting most of the sane comments. like guys are thieves already on the site checking out their next victims?
  • 3 0
A good tip ; if you own many bikes always leave the cheapest unlocked
  • 1 0
We put eyelet bolts in the concrete in the garage concrete and chain the bikes down always. I would recommend doing the same in campers, vans, trailers etc.

Maybe we should re-open Alcatraz (the jail)?

Both are names of current and former prisons within 10 miles of my flat, oddly.

Insert joke about Alcatraz break out ...

Seems like there are a lot of shitheads in the UK. 97% of the comments are from people in the UK and outside the states.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I am curious about this, too. Seems like a lot of bike thieves in the UK compared to anywhere else.
  • 2 0
@okavango: It certainly feels that way looking at FB groups and the like here. Possibly due to higher population density and smaller homes with not-very-secure bike storage.
And the fact that there are a lot of shitheads in the UK, obvs.

When bad guys are confident there's no guns around-crime goes up.
  • 10 1
@jrocksdh: If you shot a bike thief you'd be going to jail. For a long time. After your came out 32" wheels would be the norm & you'd have to buy a whole new bike anyway.
  • 1 4
@eshew: of course, nobody ever wants to actually be in that position. And depending where you are, you may need to be physically threatened before using that last resort.
Ultimately it's insurance, and statistics prove, it's a deterrent.
As a concealed permit holder, I know all about the insurance I have to have and the mess that comes after.
Just look at the case of two home owners protecting their home from blm rioters in usa not long ago.
  • 4 0
@jrocksdh: oh boy. You not talking about that foghorn leghorn looking lawyer and his big green giant wife, right? cuz if so you sure have a lot to learn about the difference between rioters and protestors. That wacky couple just wanted to point their guns at some black people, no provocation nor protection needed
  • 1 3
@ryd-or-die: interesting outlook. From my understanding it was a gated community. Leading up to their arrival, rioting was already rampant nationwide. Beatings; property damage; and more was all all happening. Every reason for 2A was on full display. Why is she green giant?
  • 2 1
@jrocksdh: someone who calls protests for less police brutality and discriminatory policing practices "riots" surely doesn't have a realistic purview of the way black people are treated in our country despite the hours upon hours of video evidence. Why you apparently concur with their childlike and irrational sense of fear regardless of the fact that no one was even on their property nor attempting to enter their property, is beyond logic. Who died and made them the private security for their supposedly "gated community"? Nothing except the rational side of their amygdala. I carry not because I have an ingrained sense of fear when black people around, but because of crazy white losers like the foghorn lawyer and his big green giant wife.
  • 1 3
@ryd-or-die: how on earth did you not witness the riots all over the country?
Beatings; fires; vandalism; looting; anarchy. On a deserted island?
  • 1 3
@ryd-or-die: big green giant wife? What is that? Sounds mean, I guess.
  • 2 0
@jrocksdh: not as mean as pointing guns at passersby without provocation. Let your supervisor at Meany-Head Police Dept know, maybe he can clear up some things for you.
How on earth do you not see the unfair treatment of POC in America? On a deserted island, perhaps?
