EWS Cancels First 3 Rounds of 2022

Aug 26, 2021
by Alicia Leggett
Duncan Nason heads down the final rock slab of Trouty and the end of the final stage.
Tasmania's unique terrain made for an excellent EWS race in 2019. The series hopes to return soon.

The Enduro World Series announced today that the first three rounds of 2022 will be canceled, hopefully to return in 2023.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, the EWS and local committees have decided that the three Australia and New Zealand rounds scheduled to take place in Maydena, Derby, and Nelson cannot take place.

bigquotesWe’re obviously disappointed not to be visiting New Zealand and Tasmania in 2022, but it’s the right decision in light of the current situation.

I personally thank the hard work and support of our Nelson and Tasmanian organisers and we look forward to bringing the EWS back to those venues as soon as possible.
EWS Managing Director Chris Ball

Nelson built new trails for the event and the whole bike community was looking forward to hosting riders from around the world, so the Nelson Mountain Bike Club plans to figure out when a Nelson event is feasible in the future, club chair Melanie Schroder said.

Depending on how the Covid situation changes between now and the end of 2021, a decision will be made in January 2022 as to whether the EWS can visit those venues in 2023.

I’m the furthest thing from a covid denier/antivaxxer but this is getting to be too much…the event is in 6 months, outdoors, in the Southern Hemisphere summer, when the vaccination rate should be well over 50%, and when we’ve had larger events with larger support staffs in more concentrated areas for the past year. Formula 1, the Olympics & Paralympics, the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, Tour de France, and other massive sporting events have gone on with case loads lower than the general population.

All that said, I’m all for the localities deciding when it’s safe to have to get back to normal. This sucks all around.

Totally sucks but theres no way we could have held them all in Quarantine for 2 weeks imagine how many people it would be, and its booked out for ever. Our Queen is gonna keep us all locked away for the rest of our lives so I wouldnt anticipate anything every happening here again until shes deposed.

I think lots of people at this point are willing to sacrifice others just to get back to doing their regular activities.

Here in BC we have 68% of our population with both doses, and Covid numbers have still been spiking for weeks. I wouldn't hold that 50% vax rate as the goal for future success.

@sjma: seems like I may have been huffing a bit too many of my own farts here in New England but life is essentially 99% back to normal. We wear masks on the train & airports and in government buildings as a matter of policy but nowhere else. We’ve got mobile vaccination clinics popping up at trailheads, restaurants, and in parks. If you want a shot, you can have one, and if you need a booster, we’ve got you covered. I’ve been to indoor hockey games, two baseball games, comedy shows, a concert, and out to eat in restaurants weekly. My friends and family that have compromised immune systems meet with us outside and they can’t say enough how much they appreciate being able to see each other again. This isn’t insurmountable - we can go on living our lives, differently for sure, but we don’t have to live in fear: if we work together.
  • 38 16
@kokofosho: gets to a point where you just to have to wish everyone the best and hope you see them on the other side which is fine because there’s like a 99.9% chance of not dying from it and there’s way too many people on this planet anyway.

@mammal: Case numbers are no longer the number to watch once there is a significant amount of the population jabbed. What you then need to watch is hospitalizations and death rate. UK is having something like 30000+ cases a day, but only around 800 going to hospital, and something like 30-40 deaths, whereas this time last year, with that many cases you would have 10x or more in hospital as they are having now.

Vax doesn't make you immune, but it sure betters your odds of getting so sick you end up in hospital or under the ground.

NZ and Australia are so far behind the rest of the world on vax because our governments both thought we didn't have Covid, weren't going to get Covid, so no need to worry about Covid, so vaxxing was not a priority. That is why NZ locked down on 1 case...now at 277...we only had 18% of the population with a jab at the time of that first case. Our govt, and Aussies, both seriously dropped the ball.

NZ has a chance of returning to zero covid as we had nothing before this latest outbreak, and we moved swiftly to a lockdown (unlike NSW), that we may, just may, squash it again.

As mentioned above, both countries will put you in quarantine for two weeks; spaces that are hard to get for normal citizens for literally months (NZ is booked until next Feb)...unless you're an All Black, forget about having any reasonable access into NZ.

 @mammal: over 75% now.

@thenotoriousmic: whether it is moral or not we are at that point. I think the survival rate is more like 98.7% here. Almost surely underreported and not accounting for people who died of not getting the treatment that they need not related to COVID. Also considering the people who have long COVID and whatever other long term health effects that exist. It is not good but it seems clear that the impetus to save others is waning.

@handynzl: i think you will find the reason NZ and AU were behind was more to do with the limited supply of vaccines. It makes sense to prioritize countries getting fisted by covid first, then country's that have not such as NZ once the supply is there. But blame the government as they are the ones making the vaccine.
  • 6 0
@handynzl: harm reduction seems easier at this point. Not going to the hospital really should be the end goal. Clearly it is here to stay. Get vaxxed and waxed friends.

I like the strategy here in Texas: full on covid-apathy since the beginning of the year. I occasionally see a mask or someone talking about the vaccine. Other than that life is normal. Meanwhile in AUS it's illegal to go out for fresh air www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWvQljgkr_U
  • 14 9
@thenotoriousmic: 99.9% if vaccinated... still several orders of worse than the flu if you're not...99% of all dying in UK are not unvaccinated (as generally reported in most news outlets). This is turning into the pandemic of the unvaccinated. If there is a good number with the jab, as there is in the UK, then this does get down to death stats similar to the flu and other respitory diseases.

UK is showing how a high vaccine rate (70+%) works while USA is showing still that a rate around 50% is not enough. Israel is also a good country to watch for vax v death rates.

If people choose not to get a jab, that is their choice, but they do need to accept that their choice has consequences, and their consequences will be very different to those that did get vaccinated.

Keep safe.
  • 3 0
@jaydawg69: That's for a single dose. It's 67.503% currently for both jabs as per: covid19tracker.ca/provincevac.html?p=BC
  • 3 1
@handynzl: Yes, I'm aware of the dynamic between cases/vaccination rates/hospitalizations. Our hospitalization rates have doubled in the past two weeks, from just 68 to 138 now. It may be a low-ish number at this point, but we've got regions of the province at 43% vax rate, and the hospitalizations are climbing as the case number climbs.

@sjma If you thought for a second that NZ would let in hundreds of athletes along with all of their support people for a bike race you seriously have not been paying attention to current events. This was never going to happen and EWS should have known that.
  • 3 0
@mammal: I was going with the % of 12 and up, the eligible ones. All good.

@sjma I think it’s more to do with the EWS being unable to a) get the racers and staff in and b) the fact the way aus is handling it it’s highly likely that the event may be hit with a last minute cancellation. As an organiser it’s too much of a risk.

@woody-nz: Bang on there, mate. People in this country would rather believe we had full vaccine access and supply and chose to sit back rather than what you outlined here - our supply was constrained because NZ was not battling Covid to the level other countries were. Can you imagine the international outcry had we secured full supply for the country (by paying more, as some suggest we should) at a time when the likes of the UK, Italy, and not to mention developing nations were getting hammered?
  • 3 0

@sjma: dude I just spent 3 weeks in Vermont and it was kind of surreal coming from the mid-Atlantic. Things were pretty much back to normal, and even indoors masking was minimal. It was cool, but also stressful with an unvaccinated 4 year old. Back when we booked it, I kind of figured Vermont would be super vaccinated and Covid would be essentially over. But Delta changed that mindset. However, the fact that things are pretty much back to normal and hospitalization rate is still super low means that if you don't have a kid, life is pretty much back on.

@pizzaiolo: oh believe you me, we (the public) have been screaming for it, but our government is run by a paxk of idiots, plain and simple. We have squandered 18 months...this government didn't even have a game plan for if their one quarantine hotel (yes, hotel, not hospital) ran out of beds. As of last week they didn't have a second option. They finally did something about it and have gotten themselves another hotel as of next week. This will bring our combined beds up to 500ish. Currently everyone that tests positive is shipped off to these hotels, so at 267 cases in the community and 50-ish imported on planes, we've already filled up the first hotel.

The PR to the world is strong with Ardern, but they haven't hit a single policy yet....promised 10000 new houses a year to solve the housing crisis...from 2017...current total 600ish built....banned gas exploration and further coal consents, pushed the EV car thing by taxing new vehicle purchases and subsidising EV's and now we're importing more coal from Indonesia in three months than we have in three years just to power up our one and only coal electricity generator...but it's all ok, because her oft spoken "be kind" message is what will get everyone through covid, climate change, housing crisis', and no workers to pick the fruit now rotting on the ground.

This has to be the worst government since the 1970's.
  • 8 9
@woody-nz: $40mil to buy more vaccines....versus $1.5billion for every week in lockdown...we're $3bil in the hole next Tuesday. Sorry, but this could have been avoided for $40million. Our children and our children's children will be paying back the loans this is costing NZ.

Being virtuous is one thing, but not helping your own citizens is a black mark.

We gave all our Astra-Zenneca to the Pacific Islands, and CoVax as well. That's more than admirable.

There are plenty of countries in the world that are still worse off than us by the numbers. Should we stop all vaccines until they are all 100% sorted out? You can chose to believe the spin if you want, but accept that you may know someone (or multiples) that gets very sick or even dies because Ardern was worried about Rwanda, for want of another nation in the world to use their name for the point...

All kinds of governments of all sorts of persuasions and cultures the world over have dealt with it in different ways and there are very few stand outs. In the passage of time, countries seemingly doing well have had circumstances completely flip them.

We were doing bloody well until the emergence of Delta which has changed the game emphatically.

The slow vaccine roll-out is partial the government's fault but not entirely. People say we "should've ordered more Pfizer". We ordered as much as they could give us which wasn't much when Europe was blowing up. And AZ looked like an absolute master stroke when Europe started preventing vaccine exports because we could manufacture it here.

It's only when everyone went hysterical over isolated blood clotting that our program stalled.

  • 2 5
@mammal: they are still least susceptible, as i said. Sure theres SCARY HEADLINES and Dr opinions, but Medical industry Gov' and talking heads opinions have long often been wrong and or subjective, and still are. Theres also lots of pro-vaccine & anti-freedom Statistically inaccurate "information" and narratives going around; while anything contrary, even if true or relevant is Totally squashed.

From your article link "Kids still account for a very small number of hospitalizations, doctors note, making up roughly 1.8% of all Covid hospitalizations in the U.S. The virus just doesn't hit children as hard as adults. They are less likely to get infected with Covid than other age groups and generally have more mild symptoms. Out of more than 520,000 Covid deaths the CDC has demographic data on, fewer than 500 were kids under 18."

If everyone wanted to save lives There would be better ways than FORCING lockdowns, face coverings and experimental drugs. We should be putting these efforts into reducing environmental toxins, war, and especially climate change... but its not about upholding value of life its about money power politics.
  • 4 1
@getsomesy: The point is that the delta variant is new, and most of those stats are from the original variant. The fact that the rates of child covid illness is increasing, means it will continue to increase, and 500/520,000 will no longer be the ratio. Where previously it was thought that kids were mostly covid-proof, that's no longer the case, and it's totally understandable why that would make a parent nervous.

Hows about you stop calling other people unstable because they have a different point of view, its most Left Cancel but truly unbecoming.

@getsomesy: how many kids do you have? Do you think the outcomes of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated aren't different? While you may claim the vaccine is unproven, I have a number of friends who are doctors and scientists and they got vaccinated as soon as they had the opportunity. Not sure what your credentials are for making that call...I suppose the FDA completing it's normal evaluation of the Pfizer vaccine means nothing to you.

@conoat: "Zero Covid" is actually "zero unfettered community transmission". The "elimination strategy" is to eliminate unconstrained community transmission and the risk to collapsing our ICU capacity, as you are starting to see build up in several NSW hospitals.

Can you tell me about the economy again - please post any articles from the Guardian, so enlightening.

Is off the record mental health issues conspiracy?

Masks outside?

350bn in debt your kids wont pay off in 30 years?

30,000 Australian citizens shut out of their country?

800 new police?

Army on the internal Borders of a Commonwealth Nation binded by a Constitution?

Babies dying refused access to hospitals and leaders saying their hospitals are for their citizens alone.

Fully vaccinated refused access to enter and spend time with dying parents?

Playgrounds locked down for kids to enjoy despite no recorded transmissions.

A Premier on the news advising of the risk and danger about a boat miles offshore with known minor respiratory issues and world class health available and waiting.

The coming and going of organized ordained sport and officials while the ordinary citizens are revokes and refused movement

Its all a conspiracy mate.

Wasn’t England in lockdown for 12 months - we’ve only been in lockdown for 8 weeks since covid began and lived in more or less normality - probay should start questioning where you live not somewhere else that you know nothing about - we are fine. @conoat:
  • 2 0
@enduroNZ: Not really. We had two soft lockdowns first one was great because we didn’t have to work and was basically a three month holiday with face masks the second one was business as usual but with face masks and a que to get into the pub and now everything’s pretty much back to normal. New Zealand’s issue is that they just shut the doors and hid away from it hoping for a cure that never came and now you have to go through what we all went through 18 months ago. Our government didn’t care enough and yours cared too much. Unprecedented situation where nobody really knew what to do.
  • 33 6
Australia and New Zealand did a good job of stopping the spread, but unfortunately it seems like its impossible to stop so now they're probably a year behind the rest of the world when it comes to opening up.
  • 16 16
More like a light year ahead of the rest of us in terms of dealing with outbreaks...
  • 4 0
I expect that we will catch up in the next few months the vaccine roll out is ramping up and we probably have less anti vaxers than say America or uk so we will probably get to 80/90% vaccinated pretty quickly. Then we will open up our boarders to those who are vaccinated also.

Covid was always impossible to stop. It mutates regularly just like every other virus of similar construction. There will always be a new Delta/Epsilon/Gamma/Psi variant. Herd immunity can never be reached. All lockdown efforts are folly. Slowing the spread is also pointless.

Ah this sucks big time. I really thought things would be fairly sorted by the time we hosted the Tasmanian rounds ;(
In Tasmania, we haven't had a locally acquired covid case since May 2020. We are only about 35% fully vaccinated and just over 50% with a first dose, so I had hoped that we would be around the 80-90% by the time the EWS came around, but I suppose it's the uncertainly that has led to this decision.
Oh well bring on 2023!

  • 4 3
Not really the case at all, most state have been relatively covid free since June last year with no restrictions. The situation is currently looking pretty bad because a certain Premier, who was also responsible to the extreme bushfires last year, decided to save her reputation by not locking down early for two weeks or so but by locking down late and for 2+ months.

Have people really become so desperate for support of their perspective that they’ll believe anything said on YouTube over actual, validated information? YT is not a reliable source. Please reassess your perspective. Maybe start listening to people who actually know medical science, epidemiology, virology, statistics, and real journalists with experience and integrity.

I respect Aus and NZ for doing things their way, we don't all need to agree with each other. But man over the last year I realized how lucky I am to live in the US. Being arrested for staying longer than an hour outside your house, Jesus. Imagine getting arrested just for being outside alone in the woods. I never thought I'd see something like that in a western culture. But if anything it shows that kind of thing can happen anywhere. Maybe the don't mind being locked up though, different strokes for different folks..
  • 2 2
@boozed: Yes it is. How else would you describe a country that has a Constitution of 120 years, and tears it up and puts police on State borders and runs State of Emergencies that run unimpeded with no advice and to expiry and with much legislation rushed through that has no reversions. The rights to movement, trade and associations enshrined have been revoked. You my man are deluded.

Legally we are in a State of Constitutional moratorium while the power has been gifted to the State Police Commissioners, EVERY STATE.

By very definition that is exactly as @silentbutdeadly stated - dystopian tyranny.

@DylanH93: The NZ guidelines for exercising in Level 4 lockdown. If you (and anyone else who thinks this is the case) can point out the bit that says I can only go outside for an hour or I will get arrested, I'd appreciate it (then I'll stop going to ride my bike everyday as I have been):

Sport, Exercise and Recreation
- You can go for a walk, run or bike ride in your local area. Exercise is good for your mental health.
- If you do, it must be on your own, or with your household bubble.
- You can drive to a place to exercise — for example to a park but you should stay close to where you live. Do not travel too far.
- Keep a 2 metre distance from others.
- Do not do activities that may require search and rescue services. For example, do not go swimming, surfing, boating, hunting or tramping.
- If you are unwell, do NOT go outside.

Worse than that. CDC says that ~80% of adults in the USA are overweight. Also notice that the "overweight" category is trending down because more people are qualifying for the "obese" category. www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/obesity-adult-17-18/overweight-obesity-adults-H.pdf

  • 1 0
@tdog123: But the protest would only be half the number of people in a given area when we account for the additional surface area required per fat person vs per regular person. This is probably how the fats get their way, much fewer of them go farther than us skinny guys.

I think it's probably access through the borders rather than rider safety concerns driving this. Both Aus and NZ both plan to open up international travel once a decent % of the population is vaccinated - planned for first quarter of 2022 in NZ. No firm dates yet so hard for events to plan I'm guessing.
