The entry lists are out for Fort William and it looks like we may be seeing a legend of the sport return in Rachel Atherton. Thanks to the commenters who have pointed out that Rachel has already said she won't be racing but we wonder if she might do some practice runs to test her fitness? Find out who else will be taking to the start line in Scotland below:
Dan Atherton back on the start list for Fort William! Now THIS is breaking news - it's been a decade since he raced UCI there - could he win this time?
Theres one old guy in the field, born in 1981! Won here a few times in the past, can he pin the top section to challenge the flying Frenchies? I give you Mr. Fort William, on his home away from home track, The Goat - Greg Minnaar!
Greg Minnaar Podiums at Fort Bill: 2017 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2016 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2015 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2011 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2010 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (3rd), 2009 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2008 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st), 2006 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (3rd) , 2005 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (2nd), 2004 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (1st) , 2003 FORT WILLIAM, Scotland (4th), by any definition The King of Fort William!
I'm pretty sure she was talking on the gram yesterday about how she isn't ready yet. She said she wasn't strong enough to crash and that she really doesn't want to rehab again. Seems a little contradictive to being on the entry list? Maybe she's going to do some chill (but probably still faster than most pinkers) practice runs and get some exposure for the bike?
@jamessmurthwaite: Also, wouldn't she need UCI points to jump back into WC racing? I remember Peaty a few years ago in one of the Syndicate (or this is Peaty) series saying that heed needed to race smaller races to get enough points race WC. This was after he was coming back from injury.
@lbsteinm: I think that may have had to do with the Syndicate not being a UCI trade team that year. I remember some nonsense about them getting denied that qualification because their uniforms weren't in compliance or something. I don't think it would apply to Rachel since she's a member of the continental/atherton team.
Is she capable of dialing it back enough to do a chill run? Seems preprogrammed to go full gas. Not only is she faster than the comments section, she’s also tougher. A few years back she had a spectator try to relocate her shoulder. Horrible! youtu.be/C9GlWt4UODU
Fkn D-Ath holding down the Fort whilst G-Man is on the mend! I still remember his whistler EWS helmet cam from some years back as it blew my mind on how fast these pros can ride not to mention it sounds like he’s red lining it for 14 minutes. RoughAF.
I saw a video of him ripping apart some of his trails, the guy was flying in front of Bernard Kerr. He looks very strong and fast,he would do well I think and have a good time. But maybe he is there supporting the team and make a little noise.
Take a look at her insta stories. She says: "But seriously I am no where near strong enough to race really, the risk is so much higher when you aren't physically as strong - crashing is inevitable & I fear I'm not strong enough yet to not get injured.... It's so tempting to race fort William and just have fun & ride, but I could crash at any time & if i got hurt I would be so angry with myself! Not quiete ready yset.... Nearly but not quiete"
Have a look on her IG, she said she doesn't feel strong enough to not get injured in a world cup. Might be wrong, but I'm not sure she's racing yet, but will be there, continuing to be utterly inspiring for women and riders everywhere.
Damn. Don't think I've ever realized how many junior and elite men there are... Unless this is just abnormally high due to being in the UK and more privateers having a go. Hope there's no issues and complaints about getting up the mountain. I saw some long queues on the recent race there and that musta been fewer people presumably.
This hype shite about Atherton's is awesome totally deflects the attention and pressure off the flying Scotsman who will do his talking on race day ♀️
Made a twitter community for talking about the race called ‘outside the tape’ Feel like there’s nowhere anymore to discuss the dh thats’s a proper place. Come join
Not sure why most of the comments are focused on the Athertons. Rachel's not racing and I doubt Dan is either. Even if he did, he only podiumed once in a WC race - in 2005. They've had their time in the sun, it's time to focus on the new generation of riders.
..it’s true though. They had a great run, now let it be. They keep chasing to prove selfish worth and then somebody’s gonna get hurt. It’s how stuff like this winds up folks….
Not only is she faster than the comments section, she’s also tougher. A few years back she had a spectator try to relocate her shoulder. Horrible!

Would be great to see him race again.
