Dylan Maples to Ride with Commencal Muc-Off for the Les Gets DH World Cup 2023

Sep 6, 2023
by Ed Spratt
Young US rider Dylan Maples achieves legend status for a top ten qualie out of nowhere.

After securing some impressive results as a privateer so far this year Dylan Maples will be getting some extra help from Commencal Muc-Off this weekend.

As the only non-team rider making it through to finals in Loudenvielle Dylan Maples has quickly become one of the top privateer racers this year. Despite dealing with some of the less-than-ideal organisational issues that have made things harder for all privateers this season Dylan has managed to put these aside to secure some incredible results. For this weekend's racing in Les Gets Commencal Muc-Off, who only have one rider uninjured, have picked up the young American racer to help provide some extra support. It's awesome to see one of the big teams picking up a privateer racer to fill gaps left by injured riders.

bigquotesSome good news!

We are happy to be working together with Dylan Maples this weekend. Dylan is a 19-year-old American Commencal Bikes rider who has been impressing us with his riding and results this season as a Privateer.

He has a great spirit and lots of potential, and we have a lot of spare resources and a desire to help.

So, no pressure on Dylan, we’re all just happy to take some positives and learn from each other.

Some bike set-up, some Pleney laps and we’re good to go! Let’s do this!

Dylan's story is a prime example of why dropping to 30 riders is a shit idea and will be detrimental to the sport.

This is a prime example for sure!

@wynmasters: honest question, why is Dylan's story a prime example of dropping to a 30-rider final being bad for the sport? He has had some excellent results as a privateer this year, and shown enough promise to be given a run with Muc-off when a spot opened up. I can see how for other riders, who are on the cusp of semi-finals or finals spots, the 30 rider format is bad. But for Dylan Maples?

@mi-bike: Cause if they drop to 30 rider qualifying cut he wouldn't get to the point he did now. It will cut out the riders who build over time on their way to the top

@jokullthor: Anyone know how long Commencal has been providing a shared mechanic to their non-team riders? Dylan mentioned that at the end of the Wyn TV episode and I was surprised and delighted to hear they do that!

@succulentsausage: COMMENCAL Race Support has been present in the World Cups for 3 years now and Dylan is taking full advantage of this structure. All privateers racing COMMENCAL bikes are welcome to come over and solve any tech issues or just to chill a bit! See ya

So he now has 3 bikes. His original commencal privateer race bike, a privateer project GT fury and now a full Muc-Off Commencal. Lucky lucky!

Maybe Wyn will offer that support to another privateer since Dylan doesn’t need it now?

Nah the privateer gets the bike if they want to ride it, we are supporting Chris Phillogene this week in his place.

Fill in rides are always cool - A great opportunity for the rider, but it means that fans have another story to follow too. Understandably there are extra costs and logistics but I wish teams would do this more often

Maples must feel like Maverick in the original Top Gun when he's on alert five and Hollywood goes down.

Isn't everybody on that team already?

This should be mandatory! " All registered teams will fill up their spots with individual riders if their official riders are not taking part" that would be a boost for privaters and more equal competition

I think there is a rule that says all UCI elite DH teams have to enter a rider in every event or else they lose Elite team status or something to that effect. When Titi got hurt last weekend they needed a rider to enter so it looks like the chose privateer Dylan.

@ndefeo96: they still had Hugo Marini on the team as a junior
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: Do jr riders satisfy the UCI criteria? Either way, this is an awesome shot for Dylan.
  • 3 0
@ndefeo96: I would assume so. They are registered on the team and doesn’t separate the, as elite or junior. Commencal also registered Gaetan Ruffian I assume so he could fill in in a case like this.

The rule is they have to field at least 1 rIder at an event or they can’t register as a team next year.

Good news, privateer are really warriors when you see the level of commitment to race World Cup. I think it's time for DH racing to build its way out of UCI. Is Redbull Hardline a lead or crankworx?
