Danny MacAskill & Claudio Caluori's Home of Trails - Video

Apr 10, 2018
by graubuendenBIKE

A Scottish and a Swiss mountain biker meet on a trail. What seems to be the beginning of a lame joke, is actually the beginning of a magnificent encounter. You can see what actually happens when mountain bike pros Danny MacAskill and Claudio Caluori meet up in Graubünden, Switzerland, in their new video “Home of Trails”. No summit is too high, no trail is too steep, no gorge is too deep for these two, as they hit the endless trails of the region. Naturally, all the action and countless breathtaking views are accompanied by the witty commentating of Downhill World Cup POV star Caluori as he shows MacAskill around his home region.

by Martin Bissig

The world of mountain biking would be unimaginable without these two: Danny MacAskill is not only widely known for his stunning street trials videos but has also thrilled millions of fans on YouTube with his mountain bike skills as well. Claudio Caluori has made a name for himself with his fast-paced, eccentric POV runs during the Mountain Bike World Cup. This new video brings these two characters together and shows them discovering Claudio’s “Home of Trails”.

“Scottish lines” in the Swiss mountains

Caluori shows the Scot a portion of the 17,000 kilometers / 10,500 miles of trails available in the five bike destinations in Graubünden: No matter whether they hit the trails in Arosa Lenzerheide, Davos Klosters, Engadin St. Moritz, Flims or Scuol Samnaun Val Müstair, both enjoy every minute they spend on their bikes to the fullest. The tour starts at the summit of Piz Nair, where Danny waits for his enthusiastic tour guide at 3,000m / 9,842ft altitude.

by Martin Bissig

Claudio challenges Danny on the diverse trails of each destination, but Danny surprises the Swiss rider with a few cheeky “Scottish lines” on both dirt and brickwork as they make their way through the region.

Follow the tire tracks of Danny and Claudio

Graubünden is one of the most attractive mountain bike regions in the world. Thanks to its 1,000 summits, 615 lakes, 150 valleys and three different spoken languages, this part of the Swiss mountains is as diverse and spectacular as it can get. The region is the perfect playground for flow seekers, gravity lovers and biking families thanks to the fact that virtually every trail is open to mountain bikers.

by Martin Bissig

The thousands of near endless trails and the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships that will take place in Lenzerheide this September are only two of many highlights this season. You can follow the tire tracks of Danny MacAskill and Claudio Caluori thanks to the “Home of Trails” packages. Additionally the “Home of Trails Road Trip” offers an all-inclusive experience with a private guide, shuttle, accommodation and additional exclusive benefits.

This is everything you could want out of a video; Claudio narrating, Danny shredding. Maybe add in some Jeff Kendall-weed next time, perfection.

Jeff Kendall-weed is annoying, everything else i agree with

I’m a simple man, I see ‘Danny MacAskill’ or ‘Claudio Caluori’, I click.
  • 117 5
Yes, but I was disappointed that with all the chemistry and obvious tension that they did not kiss.
  • 12 0
@oscartheballer: need to leave something for the sequel
  • 91 0
I would never buy Danny’s used bikes
  • 68 0
This is just the trailer for a longer version..right? RIGHT???!!! I could watch all day.
  • 53 3
That's was great. We all know that they both ride better than most of us ever could, but apart from the front flip and balancing on that bridge edge, a lot of the riding looked like something a lot of us could do. No ridiculous massive air etc. Really good video
  • 34 0
I'm not sure I could exit a guy's porch with the Big Mac's style.
  • 18 0
imagine the chain snaps riding on that bridge edge...i was terrified watching this part. awesome scenery! what a landscape
  • 57 3
Danny, stop exposing yourself on skinny shit facing 100m cliffs... its good to see and all, but we know you can ride over a nylon thread and bunnyhop... we dont want to read bad news in the future... keep front flipping stuff and pushing the limits... cheers
  • 18 0
@mtbikeaddict: yeah most of us would be more like claudio...casing the transition on the way out.
  • 4 0
@Lagr1980: @funkzander: Yeah, that part was terrifying lol. First (small) bridge I was like whoa... That was sweet I'm jealous. But I've seen him do stuff like that. When he crossed that big bridge, a part of me first thought "WHAT?! That is sick!" So jealous of that dude's skill. But then I was mentally screaming, "What the crap! You are freakin insane! Get the heck off that bridge right now! (To the left, onto the road of course.) I feel like watching parts of that video took time off my life... But I'll watch it again, cause that was AWESOME! lol
  • 5 2
@Lagr1980: The front flip is far more risky than the bridge ride though... Much more chance of not getting it right with horrible consequences.
  • 3 1
@monkeyseemonkeydo: dont think so mate, considering Danny is a freaking Cat.
  • 9 2
@monkeyseemonkeydo: How? Front flip could sure mess him up but falling from that bridge is 100% death.
  • 1 2
 @Lagr1980: Totally agree.
  • 7 1
 Please no certain death moves.
  • 6 1
@jeremiahwas: But the bridge ride (to a trials rider) is low on the difficulty scale so the *chance* of it going wrong is very low. The slightest issue on the front flip and he could be slamming head first into concrete at 20mph from 10 foot up and the outcome would be horrible.
  • 6 0
@monkeyseemonkeydo: I guess that depends how one is defining risk - on a chance something could go wrong vs how high the cost is if something goes wrong.
  • 2 0
@jeremiahwas: It's all calculated risk, a risk to success ratio -- yes, the cost is high if something goes wrong (100% death), but with a guy like Danny, the chances of something going wrong here is probably as close to 0 as a guy can get. Probably fairly routine for him, like walking across the street. I think it would have to be. Also, I suspect he doesn't register risk in the same way the rest of use do.

For me, I'd be like, "No, forget it." (risk of death -- 100%: risk of failure, probably 98%) I don't know what it is exactly, but I do know I'm not fool enough to try. And the same for Claudio, apparently. My guess is he has a way better shot than I would, but the calculated risk is still way too high.
  • 1 0
@jeremiahwas: Exactly. Yes the outcome would be 100% bad if the bridge went wrong, the chance of that on a wall, what, 18" wide? for someone like Danny is virtually zero. Sure he has to overcome the fear but he's a bit different when it comes to that! Granted he's got those front flips dialled too but there's more chance of something going wrong due to the speed and less controllable factors.
  • 5 0
@monkeyseemonkeydo: most of accidents happen when doing the most casual stuff, sure Danny is as experienced as someone can get assesing risk.. imagine a wind gust, or a freaking bridge stone going loose..
  • 2 0
@Lagr1980: you're fighting a losing battle here. The monkey has a point, you don't.
As he said, calculated risk. These guys don't get to these positions by being stupid. Those are the guys you see on you tube crash reels. You really think he would have even been allowed to just ride this bridge without checking it out first or in unfavourable conditions.. no. and a freak gust of wind strong enough to blow him off.. come on. Riding in a straight line with a 2' wide margin for error, not difficult for this guy. We've seen him bunny hopping from on 2" wide train track to the other. Certain death of falling sure but would he ride it if he thought about that, again, no.
He is absolutely more likely to f*ck up and injure himself during the front flip, that was the point the monkey was trying to make.
  • 25 0
Wicked front flip huck to flat!
  • 15 0
speaking of flats, Claudio should try them so that he doesn't end up hanging on the back of a bus unable to clip out again.
  • 21 1
Danny, please stay on your bike. I love big moves and stuff, but it seems like he joined that crazy movement of who can do the craziest shit... Not sure where I stand on that. Awesome video, and man I want to ride those trails
  • 4 2
What do you mean joined? He is the movement haha. Go watch his three down the flight of stairs in the 2009 video as well as the drop at 4.51 of that same video.
  • 15 2
@Protato: Im talking about moves that can get you killed, like for sure, not injured, just killed. That bridge thing
  • 2 0
@stefanfresh: It is a trials kind of thing. Some of the stuff they do is lethal. After Rick Koekoek got the sidehop record, I looked at what else he's into. Saw him hop onto a rather high pile of rocks where I think I wouldn't even dare to climb with hands and feet. But yeah, Hans Rey, Ryan Leech (and Kris Holm if you include unicycle trials) all have had their video segments where failure is no option. The speed may not be there, but there is definitely altitude and exposure.
  • 3 2
I know what you mean. One of the moves reminded me of those losers doing jumps on rooftops and hanging from one hand from the edge of a skyscrapper , in the hunt for likes and followers...
  • 1 1
 @Lagr1980: yeah, exactly.
  • 1 0
@stefanfresh: Yeah I get what you're saying, but I don't think it is just for likes and followers. Trials riders are like acrobats. Some of the stuff they do is dangerous, lethal even. Acrobats die during circus acts too. Even in Cirque du Solei, quite recently even. And it is not for likes and followers. These highly skilled acrobats/athletes do their job. No need to go all social mediay about it.

I watched the "motivational video" of aforementioned fellow countryman Rick Koekoek, who's a top ranked UCI trials rider. It looks plenty dangerous to me. But I think it goes for more than a few of these athletes.

Unstoppable until that damn #metoo movement ruined the next season. It's not like he was playing some Saint on the show.
  • 34 4
@LittleDominic: the guy’s an admitted pedophile. You must be kidding right? Or are you just a boorish troll. You obviously have zero idea exactly what this type of abuse does to people’s souls and to that of their family’s. Consider yourself lucky in your ignorance and because you’re ignorant shut up about it.

Stupid mountain biker. Thankfully I have a desk job so I could google this on my “lunch break”
  • 7 0
Thanks I needed that this morning. “Something is seriously wrong with that dude!” Made me laugh. Obvious why Claudio is such a confident rider with home trails like these.
  • 5 0
I would classify this as a "Must Watch" video. Great stuff from two legends of MTB. It's not just trials, not just DH, trail, freeride, etc. It is riding a bike perfected, having fun. Only way to improve would be to add Jeff Kendall Weed or Chris Akrigg and Brandon Semenuk.
  • 8 0
If that didn't put a grin on your face, you're dead inside.
  • 6 0
That's what it's all about. Not matter what the discipline, at the end of day... it's just about having fun on whatever you're riding, wherever you're riding!
  • 6 0
brilliant..... :-) a right pair of nucking futters...... Danny's front flip off the ramp was insane....

Danny is such a sick trail rider! Claudio has such a DH style - foot out in the corners where Danny counter steers and hooks. Super cool watching the different ways and lines each rider took... too short!
