Dainese's two new helmets pack a variety of safety features into ultralight half shell and full face options.

Dainese says the Linea 01 MIPS is the lightest full face helmet on the market, weighing in at a claimed 570g (size M) while meeting the downhill certification standards. The helmet has 30 vents and doesn’t shy away from adding features.

photo

The helmet includes technology we’re used to seeing – MIPS – with less familiar but still potentially life-saving features: a Recco chip and an NFC medical information storage system. Recco is a system that uses reflective chips built into clothing and gear that can be detected by search parties. The technology is ubiquitous in the ski industry but is still uncommon in bike gear. When not in use, a Recco chip adds essentially no weight and takes no maintenance, but having it does add a bit of passive safety.

The helmet’s NFC technology, designed by Swedish startup twICEme, allows a user to load their medical and emergency contact information to the system’s app. Then, in an emergency, first responders can scan a chip in the user’s helmet to access the information.

The twICEme system has been used by POC since 2019, when the Scandinavian companies teamed up to bring the technology into bike helmets. Dainese will now join those ranks, offering the first full face helmet with an NFC chip.
Linea 01 details:
Weight: 570g (size M)
Certifications: CPSC 1203, CE EN1078, ASTM F1952-DH, ASTM 2032-BMX, and AS/NZ 2063
Technologies: twICEme NFC, Recco, MIPS
Features: Fidlock magnetic closure, antimicrobial bamboo fiber liner, adjustable peak, 30 vents
Price: EUR 279.95 / $332 USD

Linea 03 details:
Weight: 370g (size M)
Certifications: CPSC 1203, CE EN1078, and AS/NZ 2063
Technologies: twICEme NFC, Recco, MIPS (all optional, depending on model)
Features: Fidlock magnetic closure, antimocrobial bamboo fiber liner, adjustable peak, 18 vents, ponytail compatibility
Price: From EUR 149.95 / $178 USD to EUR 199.95 / $237

In addition to the Linea 01 full face, Dainese has launched the Linea 03 half shell at three different price points. The Linea 03 MIPS+ has all the features described above packed into an 18-vent, 370g half shell helmet. For those who aren’t interested in the bells and whistles, the Linea 03 MIPS offers the same helmet without the Recco or NFC features, and the Linea 03 Basic is the same design minus MIPS.

The Linea 01 will retail for EUR 279.95 ($332 USD). The half-shell options will start at EUR 149.95 ($178 USD) for the Linea 03 Basic, bumping up to EUR 179.95 ($213 USD) for the MIPS version and EUR 199.95 ($237 USD) for the top-end MIPS+ helmet.

The Linea 01 and 03 helmets will become available November 15.

I don't care if it is lightweight because that is the ugliest visor I may have seen in my entire life

It's like a piece of lettuce glued to the helmet... wtf?

In my opinion, the visor would’ve been fine if it didn’t have that mounting point in the center. That’s the only piece that’s off putting for me. It really is awful though

I don't mind the simple visor on the half shell, the full face is BAD. Really enjoyed should have used the half shell design on both

lmao 217 ppl are just as shallow and superficial as you, thinking of looks as a variable in safety wear. Plain exemple of the dehumanization of our race right here bunch of fakes. gg 2021

@rustyglaze5: When there are plenty of options out there that are safe and look better, this statement seems more directed at getting a reaction rather than proving a point. Given the potential cost of this helmet, and the abilities to execute design with pure functionality, I don't believe there is any excuse to produce something that is cosmetically unappealing. That being said, this was not designed with pure functionality in mind, this was designed in an attempt to look good.
  • 2 0
@rustyglaze5: pretty sure this was designed with light weight in mind. I can assure you there are safer, better looking, more ventilated helmets on the market. They weigh a bit more but you don’t look like errrr… whatever that is and as a bonus your head stays cooler. cool soap box though bro

Recco: the silly little reflector tags used to sell ski jackets now rebadged to serve zero purpose in the summer as well! It's the worst kept secret in snowsports: Recco tags only come into play in alpine rescue once conditions are good enough to send up a helicopter, and by that point, what they are looking for are cold, stiff avalanche victims. The transceiver units are so big & heavy that ground rescue units can't carry them, which is a big part of why no one bothers with the tech in North America.

100% marketing gimmick. i've got this FABULOUS (but technically shitty) 80's nevica jacket with them sewn in: pbs.twimg.com/media/E3C8eS_VUAYEKy5?format=jpg&name=large
  • 4 0
20 years ago when I was a ski patroller, they had Dustbuster sized receivers for on mountain use, but most patrols didn’t have them. The helicopter mounted one was for scanning large areas quickly to determine where to start rescues. But, I will agree, they are mostly for body recovery.
  • 29 1
Hey, time to clear up some Recco stuff I guess. I worked ski patrol for the 8 years before coming on with PB, so I can comment a bit on Recco use in searches. You are correct that it's mostly used for body recovery, but unfortunately in most situations involving your average Joe who took a wrong turn at the resort, that's the best they have. Those people aren't wearing transceivers or doing much of anything to actively increase their own safety, so they really don't have much going for them aside from maybe a chip in their clothes that slightly increases the chances of them being found. Which is WAY better than nothing.
A helicopter isn't required to use Recco, despite what all the *very cool* Recco marketing stuff portrays. A handheld Recco detector is about the size of a laptop, and you wave it around in a pattern to pick something up. You look ridiculous doing it. The device has to be lined up with the chip at the right angle to pick anything up, so it's absolutely an imprecise tool. Still, we used to practice with it on slow days and I got semi-decent at finding objects with Recco in a simulated avalanche path. It's nowhere near as efficient as the amazing beacons these days, but it's something, and at that point, any added chance of success is a good thing. (Though like you said, the odds of finding someone with it before it's too late are pretty low. But this is mountain biking! People are way less likely to be buried in avalanches! Yay!)
So yeah, considering it weighs next to nothing, doesn't cost much, and *can* help out in a really shitty situation, I see Recco as a "might as well" type of thing, as long as the gear with it is priced accordingly.
  • 6 0
@alicialeggett: Ya actually now that I think about it... Recco would be much better used for summer activities by SAR teams who know someone is lost in a general area but don't know where exactly. These teams usually rely on helicopter fly bys to look for people and could easily use the heli mounted versions. not sure why Recco marketed themselves so heavily towards ski/snowboard rescue when it makes more sense as a hiker/biker rescue tool. Maybe they're figuring that out as their ski/snowboard market dries up do to uselessness?
  • 1 0
@alicialeggett: Are we aware of parks having the detector on hand for summer bike park riding? meaning, if you were lost on the side of A-line, I assume whistler has the detector?
  • 2 0
@alicialeggett: The problem with "might as well" is that it gives a false sense of security, which is worse than an absence of security because people will behave as if they are safe, e.g. "So what if I go out of bounds? I've got my Recco jacket on - I'm invincible!" Sure, I'm assuming people are idiots, but it is a scientific fact* that ski patrollers have extra flexible necks from shaking their heads at humanity's stupidity.

* Not a fact. Smiley face.

I work in critical care and wouldn't have a clue what to do with a helmet that stores medical info. Also what could it really say that would be helpful? drug allergies maybe? just keep your I.D in a pocket.

@andrewbikeguide: Ha ha ha! You honestly think it's a medical professionals duty to keep track of all of the gimmicky pieces of technology that people are selling in the name of "safety"? Has anybody in the medical field asked for any of this? Do any of these companies provide hospitals with equipment? Training?

Ya, blame the individuals just trying to do their jobs.

I remember hearing some first responders tell me that even if they do access the information on these devices that they can’t trust it. They can’t be sure it’s accurate or even that the helmet belongs to the person wearing it.

Not to judge a book by its cover but the vents all appear to be in the wrong place for heat management. In my experience big vents on top of the helmet are key to heat escape and this looks to miss that mark big time.
  • 2 0
Ya it tough, because to pass the DH certification you have to pass the penetration test and helmets with lots of vents don't pass because of this. It's a big part of the reason why the super light and vented enduro full face helmets don't pass, but their chinbars do. Bell Super DH does a much better job than this helmet... although this one has a much better vented chinbar. Looks like they got around the penetration test with that lattice structure. Someone needs to combine the Bell Super DH and this thing to get a good looking, super light, well vented, DH certified helmet.
  • 4 0
I wear my lightweight full face helmet when I need to earn my downhill runs by climbing. This means it needs to be highly vented with no breathing restrictions. I don't really care about how it looks as much as how it feels. If it's safe, light, cool and no breath restrictions I'm ok with it. Guess we'll have to see the reviews to find out.
  • 7 0
"Imperceptible to Wear", sounds like the marketing department got their ad campaigns mixed up with another product.
  • 2 0
"Recco is a system that uses reflective chips built into clothing and gear that can be detected by search parties."

I know they just call it a "Recco Reflector", but perhaps some clarity would be useful here.

It is a _radar_ reflector, not just a shiny visible-light-reflective bit that could likely not be visible to the eye in a crash. Those search parties also need to have and use a Recco Detector to take advantage.
  • 1 0
Helmet has some street moto vibes (not sure if that's a good thing or not), but that visor should have stayed a CAD drawing. Hope they realise this at some point and offer a redesigned version. Apart from that, good to have many options on lightweight full face helmets.

When Italian designers hit the mark it's a beautiful thing. These are standing next to a pile of burning tires near the Napoli waterfront.
  • 1 0
Looks well designed with the smooth chinbar that won’t hook up on the dirt. The visor is questionable. I would definitely wear a lightweight full face for everything except super easy rides. I have the stage but it still feels like a prototype. Helmet manufacturers need to step up their game, for the caliber of riding that enduro is, full face helmets should be like second nature.

  • 3 0
Whoever designed that should honestly never design anything in their existence again, ever.

Dainese realized that if you want a very light helmet, all you need to do is ditch the useless visor. Seems easy enough to do it in this one. The only remaining question is what's ugliest, zero visors or this visor?
  • 1 0
Ugly, or it might actually look good without the visor, which is quite ideal since visors are mostly added for aesthetics at the cost of everyhting else.
