Crankworx Announces DH Plans for 2023 Including $130,000 Prize Money & Rob Warner On the Mic

by Official Crankworx
Master of ceremonies was of course the one and only Rob Warner. He was on form as always but with a bit more of the craziness much like we used to see in his Forecaster days.

2023 Downhill season is set to be one for the history books, with big changes rolling out from all sides. We are stoked to announce our up-leveled plans for downhill mountain bike racing today, including the following:

Rob Warner as the voice of Crankworx DH in 2023, with co-host Eliot Jackson.
Crankworx DH action on Red Bull TV at all four stops (in addition to Crankworx’s other core disciplines).
Elevated coverage of all Crankworx DH races, with more cameras to capture more of the action for fans following along from home.
Crankworx World Tour Downhill Championship titles, to be awarded to the M/F riders with the highest points total over the course of the Crankworx season.
• The launch of the 1199 Award, an all-new prize in downhill mountain bike racing. Named in honour of Stevie Smith’s legendary points total, the award puts CAD 10,000 up for grabs, for male and female pros respectively, for a racer who can crack 1199 points over the course of their Crankworx DH season, thereby completing the Quest for 1199. If the feat is not achieved in a year, the prize money carries over, and the pot grows. Full details below.
• In 2023, a four-stop Crankworx World Tour DH Championship series bookended with firsts. In March in Rotorua, racing will kick off with a first-ever broadcast from the Whakarewarewa and Tītokorangi forest in Rotorua. In July in Whistler, the Crankworx DH season will wrap with the first race on the new 1199 track in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. More details to come on both.
• With prize money up for grabs at all four Crankworx DH races, plus the overall and the 1199 prize pot, a total of approximately CAD 130,000 is up for grabs for elite downhillers competing at Crankworx in 2023.

bigquotesCrankworx is all about creating the ultimate experience in mountain biking. With that in mind, we have re-imagined what Crankworx Downhill is for 2023. We've got the opportunity to bring some of the world's best to race in these amazing locations. We've got a dream team in the booth, elevated coverage, and a unique new award for athletes to chase in the 1199 Award. We hope that fans will have as much fun, whether they are trackside or watching on Red Bull TV, as the athletes who come to compete at Crankworx do. We are stoked with what we have planned for DH in 2023.Darren Kinnaird, Managing Director of Crankworx

The 1199 Award (also referred to as “the 1199”) will be awarded to a rider whose outstanding performance over the course of the Crankworx Downhill season pushes them to achieve a points total in excess of 1199 in the 1199 Award Standings. The first rider (male and female) to reach 1200+ points in the standings, thereby completing the Quest for 1199, wins the 1199 Award, and a prize of CAD 10,000.

The Quest for 1199 is open to all pro men and women.

If the feat is not achieved in a season, the prize money rolls over to the following year, until the 1199 points total is surpassed, and the award is claimed. The prize pot grows and the stakes get higher every year the award is not claimed.

1199 is a reference to Canadian downhiller Stevie Smith’s legendary points total from his 2013 overall World Cup title.

Points are up for grabs at all RockShox Crankworx Downhill races over the course of the season. There are four races in total, staged in the following locations:

• Rotorua, New Zealand
• Cairns, Australia
• Innsbruck, Austria
• Whistler, Canada

The points structure and rules are detailed here: DH titles and points structure

The goal is to introduce a new challenge in downhill mountain bike racing, award Crankworx’s fastest and most consistent racers, while amplifying the legacy of one of the disciplines most legendary riders. In addition, it’s to celebrate the road to Whistler on the Crankworx World Tour. With the Whistler Mountain Bike Park track created in Smith’s honour as the final race of the season, some years the Quest for 1199 will come down to the Whistler track. In those cases, the quest is both a push to go beyond 1199 points, and a push to master the 1199 track.

T-minus four weeks 'til it all kicks off in Rotorua.

 They just got rob warnered
  • 49 44
Last I checked Crankworx DH rounds are UCI sanctioned Class 1 events with points for grabs. So who's sucking what??
  • 137 3
@davetrumpore: Well Discovery channel can suck it.
  • 76 17
@fruitsd79: I guess I'm just not going to be negative and vindictive to a product no one has actually experienced just yet. But I will be optimistic about the possibility of two high quality DH series shown live. That's one more than last year if my math is right
  • 12 10
@davetrumpore: your comment did come across as negative.
But yes it's good to have more coverage of course
  • 6 1
@davetrumpore: is it negative to be positive that it's not going to be as good without Warner on the mic?

I see C Ball clicked the downvote

UCI stole the money. Violence is the only way left.
  • 1 0
This same shit happened in golf a few years ago didn’t it? A new series? Cool. Bring it.
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: name one thing DC didn't beat into the ground.
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: UCI can suck it because this is the beginning of the end of their tyrannical reign on what's considered the highest level of downhill mtb racing
  • 2 2
@EnsBen: let me remind you that the UCI in a governing body not an event promoter or organizer. Enduro Sports Org (ESO) in partnership with Discovery run the world cup, while Crankworx/Red Bull will put on the Crankworx Tour. BOTH series fall under the umbrella of the UCI and sanctioned events. Not sure how that creates the beginning of the end of the UCI in any way...
  • 2 2
@fruitsd79: once again let's remember Discovery is the broadcast partner not the promoter or organizer of the series... That is ESO (formerly Enduro World Series which has a pretty good track record of running a global race series).

And while Discovery doesn't run the Tour de France the seem to do a good job on the broadcast production
www.mediaplaynews.com/warner-bros-discovery-2022-tour-de-france-bike-race-set-record-streaming-broadcast-records-across-50-european-markets

I also like that I can navigate their website and find what I wish to watch easily. RBTV on the other hand...
  • 3 0
@davetrumpore: rbtv app on roku is easy. Click on events. Watch mtb content. Three clicks. And I'm watching Valparaiso race.
  • 2 0
@fruitsd79: I suspect he's on the eso payroll. RBTV was easy and flawless and free.
  • 2 0
@davetrumpore: yes I understand how organizations work but my point is that now there's competition between these currently UCI-sanctioned race series (Disco vs Redbull), and the hope of what seems to be literally everyone on this site besides you is that Crankworx/Redbull will get too punk rock for the UCI and forgo their ridiculous governance in favor of a separate, more popular (for both riders and fans) race series. therefore, UCI can suck it
  • 1 0
@EnsBen: mmmmm... Yeah i dont see the riders or the Crankworx series wishing to give up the UCI E-1 status anytome soon for points and prestige... But apparently you speak for everyone other than me. Just dont hold your breath there bud
  • 1 1
@davetrumpore: for god's sake dave go cash your UCI influencer check and just let me have this one
  • 1 0
@EnsBen: based on what? Your feelings?

Sorry but facts and the details behind them actually matter.
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: yeah because "suck it UCI" really came across as purely a fact-based, detailed argument?? you're damn right based on my feelings. your photos are great but having to argue this snarky comment on PB until your knuckles are white is lame dave, lame. I'll continue on this journey with you either way
  • 1 1
@EnsBen: projecting much? you sound mad. No one's arguing but you here.

I'm just pointing out how the "competing series" that's supposedly (as you claim) going to stick it to the UCI, is indeed intertwined with UCI.

Knuckles arent white. Its not hard or stressfull to write facts.

You Still haven't enlightened me how the UCI is going to wnd up sucking it here. All ears for it... Lets hear it.
  • 2 0
@davetrumpore: Dave every response you've written is arguing...

but the fact remains that my statement wasn't based on fact, rather hopeful, opinionated forecasting of how the new race series will influence the pinnacle of downhill mtb racing. I feel like you may have missed the part where I predicted that although the UCI does indeed govern the new series, I'm hoping they'll eventually part ways for the riders' sake; see Eddie's 2020 interview ("UCI is suffocating downhill mtb") and Loic & Finn feeling the need to create a riders union to balance the UCI's power as a couple quick examples of where I'm coming up with the idea.
  • 203 0
Finally downhill is getting some real prize money. And Rob Warner commentating??? It must be Christmas!
  • 26 3
To be fair, it is not a lot of prize money (15000 CAD or around 10k Euros for each round per category) but still a big step in the right direction
  • 98 2
@bashhard: that’s almost triple what UCI pays
  • 5 1
@bashhard: 10k is pretty good prize money in my opinion, but maybe im way off. Is there a poll for what people think prize money should be?
  • 28 5
 @bgoldstone: 130.000 - 20.000 (1199 Award) = 110.000CAD
110.000CAD / 4 (stops) = 27.500CAD/stop
27.500CAD / 2 (m/f) = 13.750CAD/stop/category

13.750CAD = 9.575€
The UCI pays out 10.100€/stop/category.
So in the end the UCI pays more. Even though it’s still not enough.
  • 7 0
@bgoldstone: Is the 130k figure refering to the max prize money a single rider can earn over the season or is it the sum of prize money given to all riders (2nd, 3rd getting money as well)?
Because if 130k CAD is up for grabs in total, it would be pretty much the same as the UCI is paying (total of 10100 € for places 1 to 10)
  • 4 1
@bashhard: top guys are making more than that in bonus money...
  • 6 0
Well, this is a good step in the right direction..but $130K..to be split..over 4 races?? Some don't remember when Brain Patterson won AA Pro & Pro Cruiser at the BMX Murray World Cup way the heck back in like 1983 and won $25k in a day. And I thinks mtb is a wee bit bigger than bmx was in it's heyday..
  • 1 0
Almost feels more like April fools because of how much it feels too good to be true.
  • 3 0
@NWMatty: but the UCI and Discovery executives nowadays need to make a wee bit more money than back in the days!
  • 1 2
@Fortuneteller: what the hell are you talking about……English please Wink
  • 1 0
@Matt115lamb: @Fortuneteller had just simply outlined the calculations showing how the announced Crankworks prize money totals are actually less per round than what the UCI currently pays out for each World Cup DH round.
Math is hard.
much easier to just blather on nonsensically like @ChanceFuller "Finally downhill is getting some real prize money. And Rob Warner commentating??? It must be Christmas!"
  • 1 3
smart move for Crankworks to lure all the Warner fans who seem to care more about the commentary than the actual racing . since Crankworks can't actually manage to cover more than 20 seconds of the race runs
  • 96 0
holy shit; with no uci conflict, the field should be stacked & this may be the closest we get to a real wcdh race in whistler. *pencils date in calendar*
  • 43 0
Fuckin sharpie'd that date in the calendar! Lets Goooo!!
  • 24 1
Knowing the UCI, they'll probably put in bullshit stipulations stating riders cannot compete on other DH racing series during the season.
  • 26 2
@scott-townes: I hope they do... because as crankworx expands and the money comes with it, the riders would happily call their bluff and jump ship.
  • 15 1
@scott-townes: Crankworx dh races have been UCI Class 1 events for a few years now. nothing to worry about fellas
  • 1 0
has the date been released? It looks like last year's date on the Crankworx site
  • 1 0
@mattddrchs: they don't appear to have specific event dates yet; just somewhere within july 21-30.
  • 2 0
@xy9ine: I think historically it's on the last Saturday so maybe the 29th? Stokeeeed
  • 1 0
@officialcrankworx: thanks! I meant more the actual DH race itself, is there a date for that yet?
  • 2 0
@mattddrchs: July 22 seeding July 23 race. That’s the current plan.
  • 2 0
@dwkinnaird: thank you! stoked to see it!
  • 79 2
Don't know who else follows Rob Warners instagram, but not more than 72hrs ago he had a story up with a Pinocchio-nose emoji over Chrs Ball's head and saying that he (Rob) never had a contract in place with Red Bull and called out Chris Ball for lying.

But we knew that, yeah??? (the lying bit)
  • 23 0
When I thought Ball couldn't surprise me with any more spineless activities.
  • 37 1
I went and watched the whole podcast after Warner posted that and Chris Ball came across very very badly, he even said they were going to impose control on the riders own personal YouTube Vlogs of the events. After watching it I felt like top level downhill and the atmosphere surrounding it was finished. SO glad to come on here and see this crankworkx new today!
  • 10 0
@RoofofFryerstown: I believe previously Red Bull owned all the rights to whatever the riders recorded on their personal cameras during any run. Not sure if this is an expansion of that, or if Discovery/UCI are just continuing to do the same thing.
  • 10 2
The problem is that Chris Ball didn't say what Rob thought he said...

While it does sound like Ball says, "Unfortunately, you're right, it he had a contract, didn't work out."

He actually says, "Unfortunately, you're right, it yea the contract didn't work out."
  • 8 2
@btjenki: You are 100% correct. That's what I hear as well. There is clearly bad blood between them or Rob would not have gone off like that, but Chris simply said that the contract didn't work out.
  • 36 0
I just can't get my head around why you wouldn't want to employ the voice of mountain biking: is it stupidity or arrogance, or both? I'd watch Warner commentating on paint drying.
  • 10 1
@btjenki: What? It has been mentioned a couple of times, in Ball's press releases and interviews, that Rob was supposed to be tied by a RB contract. It's not like it's just this one time, and Ball has spoken indistinctly.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: soon he will deserve darkveder imogi plasted on his face seems...
  • 5 0
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: yes i was aware of that and that was bad enough already IMO but this was something different, he talked of adding control or 'structure' to the vlogs. the question then his answer is at around 48:50 in the podcast on youtube if you want to see what you can make of it. I might be reading to much into it because it was quite a vague answer but it definitely didn't sound very good to me. The discovery coverage is obviously going to be very formal and mainstream which most extreme sports fans (as in us actual downhillers) are not going to like much therefore the rider Vlogs are probobly all we will have left in terms of proper content so the idea of Chris Ball/discovery also messing about and 'adding structure' to those as well sounds quite concerning.
Personally given the news here today I'll just be watching crankworx instead anyway but I do very much enjoy all the Vlogs ect and would like to still watch them and I would be sad to see them f*cked up.
  • 4 0
@RoofofFryerstown: I listened to it while on my first bike ride of the year (ya I know but si season) and it was getting me fired up. Chris Ball should maybe take a corporate interview class. at least spineless executives are decent at sugarcoating their screw ups.
  • 2 5
Warner had personally confirmed back in the summer that he was staying with Red Bull. www.pinkbike.com/news/racing-rumours-5-possible-changes-for-the-2023-world-cup-season.html. Sounds like maybe he is the one who is now lying.
  • 4 0
It sounds like Rob Warner might be on @TheRideCompanion next week, it would be interesting to get some background on this.
  • 3 0
@Folks: my gut is that it was a power play gone wrong, but wtf do I know. I agree, its inconceivable that you wouldn't want to retain Rob's commentating.
  • 7 0
@DHracerUSA: No one said when the contract conversations occurred. They very well could have happened long before Rob confirmed staying with Redbull. He probably was sat in a room with Chris Ball and some execs who never saw a bike race in their life and realized he wanted nothing to do with this shit unless they agreed to his vision for the broadcast. When they didn't, he stuck with Redbull.
  • 5 0
@pisgahgnar: It really wouldn't surprise me if they never asked Rob and never intended to, after listening to the pod cast with Chris Ball I think it's pretty clear that discovery want a very corporate and mainstream style of coverage and Rob is very much a commentator that appeals to us actual mountain bikers and true mountain biking fans (especially with the one liners ect) whereas it sounds like discovery are trying to appeal to a mainstream audience that also watch golf and tennis and whatnot. I think discovery will find it fails miserably because the mainstream audience never seem to be interested in extreme sports and none of us actual fans want to watch it without Rob on the mic but anyway that's discovery's problem, I'm just super glad we now have an awesome series with Rob on the mic!
  • 54 1
This, this is the shit mountain biking is all about... I wish this all the success in the world!! Perfect reciepe to rip elite DH from the UCI's shitty little hands.

If this goes well, I hope they have plans to expand.. hard. After this season, I could see other DH tracks/locations skipping the UCI and joining Crankworx. I'd love to see in maybe 5 years time a 10 stop Crankworx world tour and zero UCI DH races.

Now we just have to figure out how to get Enduro back...
  • 20 0
I'm surprised they didn't add hardline to the mix...
  • 7 0
 Yes, yes, yes to this!!

I've been fortunate enough to attend Crankworx events in Rotorua and Whistler, and they are such a good festivals to experience! The UCI DH I attended at Fort William was great (because of the fans, not the weather) but it's not got the same vibe, possibly because it's just the DH at that event. If Crankworx is successful with this and can crank it up for all the events and festival vibes to be hosted at more locations, then there's no reason that it can't become the leading DH event series too...especially if the prizemoney can continue to grow and be a true, respectful award for the risks the riders put themselves through.

I'm all for it!
  • 5 0
@Becciu: what would be cool is a separate Hardline series. Maybe 3 stops. Hardline is definitely a different type of race and the season still wouldn't be overcrowded.
  • 3 0
maybe it caters to the rider's union and they all jump ship from world cup to this at one time. this season will be interesting to watch...
  • 5 4
 they can keep enduro
  • 45 0
 Long Live Chainsaw!
  • 29 0
Finally something to look forward to. This is the future of Downhill and I'm there for it. Screw the UCI and the Generic Cycling Network.
  • 29 0
FUCK YES!!!! All hail the egg!! Warner and Elliot are a great commentary team, and Redbull will smash it. Viva Crankworx and fuck the UCI!!
  • 29 0
Haha UCI, go suck some Balls
  • 21 0
tha photo at the rock is legendary ahhaha

I was in that crowd just out of the pic on the left. That was a roayally rowdy time and 100% kick ass!
  • 18 0
THIS is the news we have all been waiting (whining) for. LOOK AT THE TIME!!!! \m/
  • 18 0
Holy crap I'm going to actually start watching crankworks now instead of just the recaps!
  • 15 0
So now we need are more Crankworks events! Cycling is big enough in Europe seems they could totally do multiple and pack in the crowds. Down with UCI for all dirt disciplines!
  • 3 0
this. I think they gotta test it this year and they will come with a full schedule roll out next year.
  • 17 0
Well as long as there is no paywall. Crankworx will become the new World Cup DH series Wink .

UCI and Discovery no good.
  • 15 0
we get to keep looking at the time!!!!
  • 11 1
Really great news. Hopefully this sows the seeds for a full expanded breakaway series, perhaps to be combined with hardline... Given the choice between this and the UCI paywalled series, this year, I know which one I'll be watching, and it doesn't involve the UCI. In my humble opinion, the UCI are really going in the wrong direction here, and this is going in the right direction.
  • 11 0
So there is a light on the end of the tunnel!
  • 9 0
Finally some serious money and now they have Rob Warner and Eliot Jackson, sound like good fun.
  • 10 0
Gonna be watching that for sure.
  • 8 0
Hoping they expand the race list further in the coming years so the riders can tell the UCI and Discovery where to stick their ppv bulls**t.
  • 8 0
Hopefully this is the start of a new top level global series that has nothing to do with the UCI. Money talks - the athletes will listen. Make it happen Crankworx!!!!!
  • 10 0
 F*CK YA!
  • 10 0
 This sounds like winning
  • 10 0
 This is awesome.
  • 6 1
I bet that UCI will make some statement about the riders participating in the Crankworks and the UCI circuit, not allowing do both at the same time, It has been done before by FIFA and other sport organizations. I hope this doesn't happens but it's possible.
  • 6 1
Was just thinking the same thing. Like what happened to those that went from the PGA tour to the LIV golf tour. PGA tour banned anyone from playing again if they went to play the LIV tour if I remember correct. Lol if your product is good you shouldn't have to force peoples hands like that. Put they were clearly struggling to hold onto some big names lol.
  • 8 0
@kyleluvsdh: hopefully the riders union gets organized before the uci pull that card
  • 3 1
This is just some serious fascism...
  • 2 0
I definitely wouldn’t put it past the UCI to do exactly that. Seems to be exactly what an organization this greedy and corrupt would do.
  • 2 5
You guys are all of your rockers, the UCI would have nothing to gain from this and would only lose money and credibilittvby not being associated with Cranworx. Not happening stop being ridiculously paranoid.

@Muscovir: They aren't really greedy and corrupt at all by today's the corporate standards, it's a frickin bike racing organization that doesn't even make alot of money.
  • 5 0
Yes! I don't want some polished to boredom mainstream rubbish were the presenters don't care about the sport and are instead hired for personal characteristics. I want whatever the F Rob Warner because he's he is real even if he is imperfect.
  • 4 0
As much as I miss the Rob/Claudio commentary, Eliot Jackson does an outstanding job co-hosting too. I'm stoked to hear about the 1199 nod to Stevie and the increased prize money too. Finn Isles could've competed at the highest level in skiing but he chose DH, and Jesse probably would've quit racing and focused on school and a conventional 'job'... and I think a lot of credit goes to the Crankworks series and the vibe that Rob brings to these events. Fingers crossed the live video coverage can keep up!
  • 5 0
Hell of an opportunity for the Aussie/Kiwis - 2 rounds in their backyard (figurative) before any world cups. Already in Austria the week before the 3rd round and then just would have to do Whistler.
  • 7 0
This is sick, can't wait to watch! Rob and Elliot are so good! Love the 1199 award, long live Chainsaw!
  • 4 0
Crankworks and Redbull finally officialized what many knew or saw coming months ago.

4 stops only this year, so a series set to grow in the future should year one be a success.

The total prize money at 130000 CAD sounds like a nice round number but I would like to know the breakdown for it.

The 1199 prize is interesting but the king and queens of crankworks 2022 only got 787 and 926 respectively, so hum... Is reaching 1199 even doable over four events with a stacked field or will that money pot get bigger and bigger endlessly as no rider can pull off the perfect season to get it!?

I still see crankworks as a series for privateers but it is sure to gain interest from some factory teams and there will certainly be an incentive for Redbull riders to take part into the events, while for non factory teams it could be a good way to sell a 10 race program to sponsors.

The future sure looks interesting.
  • 3 0
there is a separate point structure for the 1199 series. 350 for the win, so it's possible in one season.
  • 6 0
@peytodog: you got it, bud. @NedaSay we shuffled our points systems to account for the 1199.
  • 2 0
 @officialcrankworx:

Thanks for clarification.
  • 7 0
Exciting but they need a bigger purse to attract a complete field. Potential sponsors step up please!
  • 2 1
They already pay out more than the world cup does. Benefit here is that it is so far ahead of any WC races. Loic is down there to race, think the SC team is showing up too.So I wouldnt be surprised if they pull a pretty good field of WC racers, at least for these first 2 rounds.
  • 1 0
This is entirely dependent on the amount of people watching the livestreams. The more views these events generate, the more interested potential sponsors will be.
  • 6 0
Would be great if Crankworx could be expanded in the future to include some Central american, South American and Asian stops.
  • 8 0
Best news I've read in a long time! Let's gooo!

Aw, someone really was listening Smile

People need to put their money where their mouth is. Everyone can complain all they want, but if everyone watches UCI they will win and nothing changes.

Don’t watch any UCI DH and watch all the Crankworx and we will get the change we want.

Sadly this won’t happen. People will just complain, keep watching and UCI will win.
  • 7 0
 Shots fired.
  • 4 0
the Europeans etc wont like these destinations. I almost feel like UCI will be in Euro side vs crankworx being asia/pacific with Canadian/USA rounds
  • 4 0
Crankworx could go for African and South American rounds too
  • 4 0
Erm, Austria is in Europe. I'm a little embarrassed for you!

It would be sick if they used that track at creekside that was under construction years ago. The 1199 theme here may be eluding to a new course in Whistler? Seems appropriate!

Lots of little easter eggs in this post, and you missed a tasty one: "...the Crankworx DH season will wrap with the first race on the new 1199 track in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park."

See you in Creekside this summer. Wink

Now add Les Gets, France, a stop here in Farellones, Chile, a Stop in USA, a stop in South Africa, Hardline and one or two European stops and it will be the best DH series in the history!

Great news for DH, but what about enduro? The whistler and Rotorua enduros were typically part of the EWS calendar, will there be an offshoot Crankworx enduro series as well?

Also, would love to see Rob’s commentary on some enduro racing now

First round of enduro in Tasmania is the same weekend as the Rotorua round of Crankworx. Can't imagine that Crankworx or the world series would want to compete against one another with separate races on the same weekend. Hopefully in the future they are able to either work together/combine or have separate calendars so as to have more racing opportunities.

@wilsonians: ABA and NBL (the two competing US BMX saction bodies prior to USABMX) competed against/scheduled against each other on purpose for over a decade. This happened with National level and even sometimes reagional races. I could see UCI/Discovery attempt to thwart 'talent drain' by doing just that, schduling on top of Crankworx events.

Yes. All the yes. I truly believe this is where the sport will grow.
