Commencal Introduces The Clash

PRESS RELEASE: Commencal Bicycles

When necessary, it knows how to be the good guy. Beautiful, charismatic, endearing, approachable, sociable, daring, dynamic, faithful, committed, sensitive and robust. But deep down, this one is wild at heart. Aggressive, arrogant, impulsive, manipulative, resentful and stubborn.

The CLASH is the bike for those who want everything!

We’re not going to deny that it has a little air of the FURIOUS about it and we believe that is definitely not a bad thing!

Like its big brother, it has 27.5 wheels and its niche is VERSATILITY! Why simply ride enduro? You can get so much more out of the CLASH, from a pedal with the kids through to full-on freeride...

Faithful to its rider, it adapts to the situation, whatever the terrain. A simple and effective bike, capable of anything!

A modern bike that has all the latest standards:
- Metric shock 230*65
- Boost
- 27.5’’ wheels
- 2.6 maximum tyre size

The CLASH utilises a concentric rear triangle pivot at the wheel axis. Connecting the seat stay and chain stay, the pivot uses big high-quality bearings (stiff, smooth and water resistant) from Enduro Bearings.

All this for what?
This positioning separates the brake forces and suspension function, which allows better control, shortens braking distances and reduces rider fatigue.

photo

The position of the main pivot point has changed from previous models and is now lower and further back in comparison. It’s designed specifically for more responsive pedalling and more aggressive braking. Acceleration and deceleration phases are more efficient and kickback during suspension travel is minimised for more comfort and shock absorption.

The kinematics have been reworked to accept air and coil shocks, both FOX and RockShox models. The frame incorporates 165mm of travel and is designed to accommodate a 170 -180mm fork.
Afterall, more is less and less is more...

As with all of our frames, we’ve paid special attention to the deformation points. In other words, we’ve strengthened these areas. We’d class the CLASH as a forgiving but precise bike.

The CLASH is the successor of the META SX.

How much more does one need?

I guess I’m getting old...I thought the music choice for this video was terrible. Nothing against this style of music...but using a song that drops f-bombs and racial slurs in an ad campaign was simply a miss for me.
  • 24 20
Design in Malice by Jedi Mind Tricks and it's at least 6 or 8 yo. Though, I do agree with you, I bet most of the Commencals employees are french and do not understand English well enough, or at least the person in charge of the video editing doesn't Frown .

How not to edit your video 101 by Commencal Big Grin .

Agree, I couldn't concentrate on the bike with Mike Tyson hollering about droppin' three in someones neck...
  • 24 8
I wanted to disagree with you, but after watching the video, I can't.

You can get away with profane/vulgar music if it fits the overall vibe attached to the cinemetography and editing. See any recent S&M Bikes edit produced by Charlie Crumlish for example. In this case the song delivery is a complete mismatch to the video aesthetic and slo-mo editing. It just further highlights the undesirable aspects of the song and it was a poor choice for a video used in a marketing capacity.
  • 8 9
Agreed. I can be crude myself, but that's way too far.
  • 19 2
What was the name of the bike again? Oh, right, the Clash!

Odd juxtaposition of gangster rap played over bike-riding.

Did the marketers at Commencal actually check the lyrics on this song, and say, "Perfect!"?

  • 6 6
@arrowheadrush: I didn't say that the music offended me. I agree...things have gone a bit too far in terms of having to be PC all the time. I use vulgar language and make inappropriate comments just like everyone else...but I wouldn't use that language if I was posting a video representing my company or brand. My kids ride (8 and 10) but I would have to mute the sound to show them this edit because they dont need hear someone talking about b!@#&$...sex offenders...using racial slurs...f-bombs...etc. The again...I am probably not the target audience for this bike.

And if you will, give it another go and concentrate on the rhythm rather than trying to understand the content. Suddenly you might just spot the absolute killer flow of JMT; much like the flow in the rad riding in this rad vid. Great stuff Commencal!

Jesus titty f*cking Christ who gives a f*ck about the video, the music in the video, whatever the f*ck ever. It’s an advert.
Why don’t we talk about the bike and how awesome it looks? Or even how shit it looks if you’re insane/ blind/ both.
  • 1 0
@arrowheadrush: when the American and/ or Canadian cusser says twat do they pronounce it ‘twot’? And what circumstances call for the the profanity? It might be very insular of me but it seems such a British term I’m genuinely interested as I haven’t heard it used often by those over the pond.

I`m french and not 100% comfortable with english but probably, or not, the Commençal`s dudes did not read the lyrics of that song before, or if they did and got them, it is in my opinion a bit awkward regarding to the subject of the video. Frenchies are everything except perfect you know, but in the same time they`re gonna win both the men DHWC and the football world championship.

PS: if any american, canadian, british mtb brand wants a french song that absolutely doesn`t match to their videos: call me, I could help you ;-)

@viatch: It can be easily done by anyone with an eye for detail, the proper size drill bits, 1/4-20 riv nuts and a setting tool. The problem is that most companies want to void your warranty for any reason possible, even if the modifications are not related.
  • 29 1
$5,500CAD with Fox Factory, XT brakes and GX Eagle. That will run you about $8-9k from Santa Cruz in Canada.
  • 9 0
Imagine the price for a Yeti.
  • 6 1
 @NotNamed: likely around 16k
  • 1 0
And you get the green one. Brilliant.
  • 2 3
@NotNamed: I'm not sure you realize but the top end SC builds are more expensive than Yetis. It's just that Yeti doesn't spec their bikes with low end parts so the "low-spec'd" Yeti models are more expensive than the low-spec'd SC's. But, you know, don't let facts get in the way of your argument!

Pretty easy to compare (just using Hightower LT / SB5.5): www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-US/hightower-lt v www.yeticycles.com/bikes/sb55

$8,199 for the top end SB5.5 (XX1) and $9,299 for the Hightower LT (XX1) - assuming the difference in cost is due to the SC brand carbon rims. Otherwise it's similarish, to my eyes.

  • 3 2

  • 6 1
Unpopular opinion: Capras look like ass. YT's paint jobs and lines in general are whack attack. The Commie looks way better.

NEG ME HARDER!
  • 11 3
I dig the idea of a 180mm fork and a bit less suspension in the rear. I'm sure the bike is fantastic and likely rides entirely different from the Supreme SX but from the standpoint of a consumer it seems like the two bikes might clash over customers a bit.
  • 4 1
i see what you did there. good pun.
  • 2 1
Nice pun. But curious what the difference in riding characteristics is between the SX and the Clash.
  • 1 0
I would say Supreme SX is simply too complex looking bike, especially not being a DH bike and maybe thats why it does not have that much attention from actual customers. There is a lot of Furious frames around in my place (Chatel bikepark) but I never saw any Supreme SX.
  • 2 1
@ryanandrewrogers, I'm furious on that statement because I like what Commencal are doing currently. I like that you can smell freeride in each bike.
  • 6 0
@MTB-Colada: I would suggest the difference is going to be pedalling efficiency, the supreme sx will be very neutral pedaling because of the idler. So it'll likely bounce about like anything with out of saddle efforts, while the split pivot will be less neutral and stiffen up a bit pedaling as there's more chain growth. One is a big enduro bike (clash) and one is a small dh bike.

Very blurry lines but I think one lives on a lift and one doesn't tbh!
  • 1 0
@ryanandrewrogers why more travel in the front?
  • 2 0
I think it's the 180mm version of Supreme DH vs Furious. Personally I like the Furious better, but not much need for a full-on DH bike here in CO, so this is perfect.
  • 1 0
@dthomp325: If you don't need a DH bike in CO, where do you need one (outside BC)?
  • 1 0
Commencals website shows that a lot of Supreme SX sizes are no longer in stock. Maybe they're discontinuing it and replacing with this?
  • 1 0
@dangahoesing: PNW? Bootleg? CA? IDK, seems like you have to travel quite a bit to make a DH bike worth it, since many Rocky Mountain/4 Corner states have just a few trails where they are worth it. I'd say there are probably less than a dozen trails in CO where a DH bike will give you a faster time than an enduro bike. Want to buy my DH bike?

Does it ride like a trek slash or a devinci?
  • 3 0
Love that they haven’t named it or appeared to license from either party. Wonder who will sue them first. I mean, doesn’t the lawsuit between Trek and DW need to get settled first? Any lawyers in the house?
  • 1 0
@powderturns: Was there a lawsuit between the two? I thought Dave actually dropped by Trek with his concept and they realized they were both already working on the same thing. They didn't want to cooperate and each went their own way. I'd be surprised if there were a lawsuit now.

Silly egos, I'd say. Schwalbe and Syntace also both realized they were working on the same thing (Procore) and then actually cooperated.
  • 2 0
@vinay: yes, there was a lawsuit. I hadn't checked this in a few years, but seems like he lost and had to pay legal fees to Trek...
www.bicycleretailer.com/north-america/2016/01/04/court-pares-split-pivots-legal-costs-failed-suit-against-trek#.W0YNhS3Mwq8
  • 1 0
@powderturns: That really sucks. I'm pretty sure he actually dropped by Trek with the concept and at that point they realized they were both working on something similar but Trek wasn't interested in his services. To sue each other afterwards sucks. Really need to dig through my collection of old Dirt magazines to figure out what happened exactly. Paper magazines, this was well before the advent of Pinkbike. At least for me.
  • 1 0
@powderturns: Maybe Split pivot/ABP is only patented in the US. Lapeirre used FSr/Horst link without paying for the patent as they only sold them in Europe.
  • 1 0
@Lee-Gee: possible. Either way I think we’ll find out soon enough. If Trek thinks it’s infringement they’ll sue. I doubt DW will having suffered a loss last time.
  • 1 0
No mention in the release about it being a Euro only bike. Hopefully some more info is released on why / how they are using the concentric design.
  • 1 0
@shirk-007: I believe the patent on concentric pivots to past its time in the US, horst/fsr and vpp are outside of the patent range so as long as its not copyright (name) infringement you should be good.

Dave weagle had sued Giant for DW link infringment and pushed khs out of the range. Think giant held him up in court until he gave up. I believe DW and delta joint are still well within patent time range.
  • 1 0
@jewpowered: DW files in 2006, so if it was a 20 year patent then it should be good to 2026. But I didn't do much here beyond go and look for the filing date.

Would be great if big names like Spesh could take a leaf out of the Commencal book of clever, cheap features that should be on all their bikes. Like that nice rubbery guard on the down tube. My naked Enduro Comp is already showing signs of wear there... Commencal are on the up - great advertising for their brand in the EWS and DH. Stolen the march on Santa Cruz with their 29er dh bike. Love it.
  • 2 0
Not to hate or anything but it seems like Commencal has like 3 bikes that are in this free ride/Enduro realm. From a business standpoint, this doesn’t seem like a gap they need to fill in their lineup. I’m confused why they made this thing over investing in a trailbike or hardtail.
  • 1 0
i would say that the Meta TR is a trail bike, that's what the TR stands for anyways. They also have the Meta HT TR, and Meta HT AM which are both hard tails.
  • 1 0
They JUST released their Meta TR 29 (trail 29er), as well as their Meta AM 29 (enduro 29). Their Meta AM hardtail also got a redesign this year. They're just churnin' bikes out.

Their lineup is pretty fleshed out right now, and they always seem to push the gnarly side of riding. They're basically only missing an XC bike, and I doubt they'll go there.
  • 1 1
Got to ride the TR & Meta V.4 ona very typical trail trail my region over the weekend & am at a loss.

Neither was ideal. 150/130mm TR was too little & the 170/160mm was a little too much. They both climbed welll enough but one was done with its travel when I least expected & the other was too similar to my DH bike to be playful.

They need something similar to a Devinci Troy or Kona Process 153 for the masses. Perfect middle ground for me.

I wonder how the ride characteristics of this bike compares to the Meta AM v4.2. I love my my 2018 Meta v4.2, but I could do without the pedal kickback. Rear suspension could be a bit smoother too under hard braking.

If Joe Strummer was a bike... It's versatile, it's punk, it's called "The clash", and it will probably be taken from us too soon.
  • 2 0
 Frivolous lawsuits await!
  • 4 0
With the Slash and the Smash out there, seems The Clash ought to have bigger hoops! Kidding. It looks rad.
  • 5 0
Whoa, the pricepoint on the Race model. Killer.
  • 1 0
seems like another decent & less expensive choice for me while narrowing down my next build.
this is fun, commencal goes back a ways now. dont know much about their support, but shit
im too light to brake a frame, (famous last words)
  • 3 0
So sick! This really makes me question if it's this or a canyon torque I'll end up getting!
  • 4 0
Damn, Kudos to Commencal! Maybe the Meta will go split pivot soon?? Big Grin
  • 3 0
I hope the new Furious too
  • 1 0
It’s an enduro bike. A sweet one at that . Bike has 10mm more travel than Sam Hill had and in the fork it makes little difference on the up. Supreme sx is more of a free ride bike but that might be the fiture of enduro
  • 4 0
I bet the weight is over 35lbs
  • 1 0
Came here to say the same thing! haha
  • 3 0
In other words, Meta SXs are about to go on mother-frogging sale.

I'll take the blue one in Med please. \m/
  • 1 0
Dayum this looks like a total party animal. My GG Smash is to be delivered today. Perhaps the Clash is a worthy stablemate.
  • 3 0
 Perfect bike for trestle!
  • 3 0
if this pedals like my supreme 6, take my money
  • 4 1
This is one nice aggressive xc bike
  • 2 0
Can someone explain me the main differences btwn the clash and the supreme sx, geometrically they seem very similar
  • 2 0
It's the enduro equivalent of the Supreme DH and the Furious
  • 6 2
@avcb: Supreme dh - for dh
Furious - for freeride
Supreme SX - for super-enduro/freeride
Meta AM - enduro/race-enduro (if there's such a thing...)
Clash - kinda crowdy already here, it's between the supreme sx and the meta. Can't really tell who's gonna buy it. Too many different bikes for too close types of riding in Commencal's catalog (of course, in my opinion).
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: I agree there's a lot of overlap, but it's cool to have so many different options!
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: One could say, it CLASHES with their lineup *snicker snicker*
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: ummm it has normal enduro build stuff on it but the sales talk says u can do big jumps and smash the trail going down freeride style and going back pedaling uphill like an enduro..... ummm so we can say it a free-duro bike???? haha
  • 1 0
@carlomagno: That's kinda the way of the super-enduro... Big Grin
  • 1 0
Their suspension design is obviously super different. That's going to be the main difference.
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: meta 27 has one build kit. so whats gonna happen to meta 27? clash taking its spot?
  • 1 0
 No idea, mate! @Tougelude:
  • 2 0
would running a dual-crown be a problem? say, 180mm Boxxer or similar. Would the geo get too screwed up?
  • 1 0
I think the boxxer has a lower a2c length than a Lyrik with the same travel
  • 1 0
@SleepingAwake: fair point, but if you are looking for rigidity, dual-crown would be preferable
  • 4 0
@yxbix: my response was supposed to be an argument for a dual crown fork as it probably would not change the geometry a whole lot, even if you have more travel
  • 1 0
@SleepingAwake: ok, I see. Cheers! I think I will reach out to Commencal for some info
  • 3 0
Long live the Pinkbike commencal section
  • 3 0
Yes...what does each model / build weigh...? Relevant info, no?
  • 2 0
 These are sweet lookin' bikes!
  • 2 0
That black/silver/red is drop dead sexy
  • 4 4
I apologize ahead of time if I offend anyone by my being offended, but that song offended me. Lol, that blue and yellow paint looks insane!
  • 3 0
 Sounds like a Slash...
  • 2 0
So what you're trying to tell me is that the Clash is an #sshole? ????
  • 2 0
 Pricing is that impressive
  • 2 0
How come no piggy backs on the airshocks?
  • 3 2
It's a vegetarian bike. Will let myself out now...
  • 4 3
Lol people getting butt hurt because of a song,, bigger problems out there...
  • 3 2
@1:37 that's how berms on bike park get destroyed and ruined for everybody else
  • 2 0
Is this a Canyon Torque killer?
  • 1 0
This looks like a modern version of the Bottle Rocket (which is a good thing).
  • 2 0
Sweet how they used Trestle for the video!!
  • 1 0
I thought this vid was fantastic and I also think this bike is a homerun. Good on you Commencal!
  • 1 0
Commencal is killing it these days! Definitely going on the Christmas list.
  • 1 0
Looks like a Trek ABP anyone?
  • 1 0

isn't the meta supposed to fulfill that role?
  • 1 0
Wonder what the max chain ring size is?

yaaaaassssssssss bring back all the freeride things!!!!!
  • 1 0
Do they have a single crown bike with idler pulley like the dh?
  • 1 0
Winter Park gets so much hate, but just look at that pristine booter.
  • 2 0
 Andorre's Calling.
  • 1 0
So where does the Supreme SX fit in now.
  • 1 0
Check their site. To me it looks like it will be discontinued for 2019.
  • 1 0
That is a lot of bike for the money...
  • 1 0
Looks like a Transition Covert ! The Clash Race seems perfect !
  • 1 0
Sick riding, dope music. Commencal knows how to sell a bike
  • 1 0
 @beeboo @turco999
Hey, this uses a dank susp platform.. Turco get it??!
  • 1 0
This looks promising! I hope commencal applies the axle pivot across their entire range now
  • 1 0
I remember those times when we called these bike "freeride bikes".
  • 1 0
Is that Ross Soriano in the video? That kid rips!
  • 1 0
How come best suspesion designs conflict with a bottle cage?
  • 3 5
Why was the Meta SX replaced so quickly? It seemed quite fine and was barley around for much time. Plus more travel and a sick suspension system
  • 6 0
you're thinking of the Supreme SX. The Meta SX runs on the same suspension platform from the Meta V3 and it's been around for years.
  • 2 0
@ryanandrewrogers: indeed. Still missing those neon matte finishes though.
  • 1 0
 Flat TT's FTW
