Riders and fans can get closer than ever to the Enduro World Series action thanks to an innovative new analyser from partners Quarq.

For the first time in mountain biking, fans and athletes can be privy to every detail of every stage of every race thanks to new technology developed by Quarq. The results are just the final chapter of a race - and the introduction of Quarq’s new analyser will tell the rest of the story. Riders who have carried a Quarq GPS tracker at any of this year’s eight EWS races will now be able to review their performance on every stage in stunning detail. They’ll not only be able to monitor their own race - but also directly compare it against their competitors so they can see where they gained and lost time on every stage they raced this year.

Qollector set up for live GPS tracking at round 1 Corral Chile 2016

All season, the top 100 ranked men, top 30 women, top 10 Under 21 men and top 10 Masters have carried the Quarq units known as Qollectors, which use GPS technology to track their location and speed. Now the technology is going one step further, and by visiting enduroworldseries.com athletes and fans can see in detail where racers not only gain and drop time, but will eventually be able to deduce where racer’s strengths and weaknesses lie and even begin to predict which stages will suit which riders.

Chris Ball, Managing Director of the Enduro World Series, said: “I’m so excited about this new service - it’s going to add a whole new dimension to our races. It’s going to let people not just discover the results of the race, but understand exactly how it unfolded, stage by stage. For fans of the sport it’s going to bring a whole new layer of interest to each race and for the riders themselves, it will offer an invaluable service. In terms of a racer understanding their own performance, I don’t think there’s ever been a more valuable tool.”

Jim Meyer, Quarq Technology Director, added: "Every race has so much story hidden inside.  From time lost and gained, to athletic prowess and power output, to the performance of a bike’s suspension, there are so many aspects of racing that are hidden from fans and spectators.  We are dedicated to revealing this hidden world through the lens of Qollector and Quarq Race Intelligence.  We are excited to work with the Enduro World Series because they share our vision.  This is just the first step to revealing a whole new level of insight for enduro racing."

so.. how many infinity stones does Quarq have now?

joking aside, I am wondering how much does it cost to deploy such technology on the field. Would be nice to have them on our local enduro race.

I've been lucky enough to race with this once already (2016 Dakota 50). It uses a cellular network so there's a subscription price. I also think I remember hearing that Quarq wants to be at the event to run them currently, which means cost is a little high. This part is a little foggy to me, but my friend who sponsors our local race series was interested in using them. Until that gets changed I think most smaller series won't be using them unfortunately.

@AVann6: Did you swing by RMS and have a beer with us?
  • 1 0
@whattheheel: No dice but I guess I should have! One of the few user names I actually recognize on PB. I had no idea that was the shop you work at. I think I've been in before, though. Are you guys the ones that moved about a year ago or no?
  • 2 0
@AVann6: Nope. That's the other guys. Saturday before the five o is free beer day at the shop!!!!

@whattheheel: Actually I know I have stopped by RMS then! I'll have to come check it out next year. Cheers man.

If only there was a competitive social networking based app available for smart phones that could do this

 My first thought exactly!

Not accurate enough yet. Would need to still aided by local devices at the start and finish to start and stop timing.

@triptex: this really irritates me - at one of my local trails a really (short but) good downhill sections' KOM is held by a roadie - the road is 200m away! No matter how fast i go i'm not beating 7s :-(

@frankwizza: I would suggest emailing the folks at Strava. They're employing some cool technology and maybe be able to put a better data filter on that segment. At best Strava is an effective personal training accessory. It may never be accurate enough to keep everyone happy but they are getting better.

A massive step up, for an already very exciting sport. Looking forward to have a look at this, while watching the first event in 2017.

Can every racer get his personal drone so we can get some footage?
  • 1 0
A drone following every bike would be epic

Amazing innovation, a real plus for the riders' safety imo! but this device should have a heart rate detector so they know if there's any big accident or worse

Also stops cheating, which has been a problem in the past
  • 1 0
@aljoburr: is it still a problem today really? not cool
  • 1 0
did say it can link up to other devices so could do

I don´t get it...Isn´t this what I always do using my Garmin and Strava with the added benefit that I can see real time position, speed, cadence, power, etc...? On my last enduro race I could compare my speed, times, etc with all the others that used strava that day. Awsome for EWS and for us to compare riders, but from the consumer´s point of view? Maybe it´s dirt cheap as opposed to a Edge520+
  • 1 2
you're right! it's exactly like using Strava and garmin.
and forget about the cheap....it costs 350$

I think you're right in that it's not really for normal people. The people who this seems made for are race organizers because it solves two problems:

1) Course completion (no cheating, there have been big scandals in triathalon about course cutting)
2) Rider safety (know where riders were when they stopped moving/got lost, possible to identify that they are stopped long before the race ends and get them aid potentially hours sooner).

Without introducing new problems: every rider required to carry same device--even playing field, not as easy as a garmin to fake/edit fit files to cheat due to direct upload/possibly closed system.

This can also potentially benefit riders in that these features, especially the safety features, may make race organizers more comfortable operating on more difficult, less accessible trails.

Will something like this make MTB more fun? Having a tool to set up suspension correctly very well may!

Really cool tech! Rode with Alex in La Thuile at the EWS and he rips, super cool dude.

Nothing new or innovative here. It's exactly the same as using Garmin and Strava.

EWS has just got more exciting!

Enduro would actually be good if they raced on street BMXs and had to feeble every fallen tree on the course.
