Canyon Recalls Mountain Bikes Due to Crash Hazard

Oct 29, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commision has recalled 2018 model Canyon Spectral bikes due to a chainstay failure. So far around 20+ bikes have failed, but no injuries have been reported. The full alert can be read here on the CPSC website.

Consumers who think they could be affected should contact Canyon toll-free at 833-226-9661 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday. Or email at us@canyon.com or visit online at www.canyon.com and click on “Service & Support” for more information.

bigquotesCanyon became aware of this limited issue months ago and has been working with riders to replace the affected parts at not cost to them, as quickly and efficiently as possible. Once we identified this issue, we immediately halted production of affected models and simultaneously began manufacturing a new set of chainstays with relocated and reinforced welds to increase durability.

As a result of our direct to consumer business model, we were able to directly contact each individual customer who had purchased a Spectral within the affected batch. At that time, we informed them that we would replace their existing chainstays with the new and updated version and advised that they suspend riding immediately.

After receiving the new chainstays, customers were given multiple options for installation with reimbursement for fees incurred, ranging from home installation to taking the bike into a local shop to, in the US, scheduling installation with their local Velofix franchise. To date, Canyon US has sent out new chainstays to 100% of Spectral owners with serial numbers within the affected range.

Please take it to your nearest dealer so they can replace the affected parts at no charge so you can ride tomorrow.

Dealer? Canyon is direct sales, good luck finding a dealer.

I cracked my chainstay and it took 7 days (including shipping from NY to CA) to get my bike back and running again.
Also Canyon covered the shipping cost both ways...not bad.

A dealer would have to order it in anyway so it wouldn't be any quicker. From what I have heard Canyons warranty replacement response is brilliant.

Haha ! If our local dealers could get anything done “So you can ride tomorrow” I’d be thrilled. Usually 1 to 2 weeks to get anything done,

@headshot: a dealer will at least take care of all the process and unless you are a sound mechanic they will install it for you free of charge.
  • 2 1
 @DirtheadNY: that's respectable.

Ya like a dealer would just have extra rear triangles laying around. These would have to be send back to "somewhere" anyway. I'm a big fan of supporting dealers and have never purchased a direct to consumer bike, but to think an LBS would be any faster at replacing a rear triangle than a direct to consumer brand, is crazy. In fact, with the direct model, I'd be willing to bet Canyon gets people these rear triangles faster than most brands could through a dealer model.

 Weird flex but ok

@islandforlife: I suppose a dealer could stock up some parts when a recall is issued to speed everything up. I don't mind waiting so I'm fine with direct sale.

@DirtheadNY: that is about the same time it took me to get warranty from a local dealer. Good job canyon in making things right.

Glad to see bike companies taking responsibility for safety in the production of their bikes, and not just blaming riders for being to rough on their bikes.

True Story 3 Evil warranty claims cracked frame 3 months, another cracked frame 1 month cracked Swingarm 18 months. Fox Float X2 2 months, come again? Sarcasm missed the mark sadly.

  • 7 0
@chappers998: ... jesus, 18 months? that's ludicrous, you could grow yourself a tree to carve a swingarm from in the meantime.
and we're not even talking about one single customer having to replace 2 frames and one swingarm.

I worked in a shop during a recall and every one took at least a week.
@ybsurf: pretty sure this won't cost anything for the consumer
  • 9 0
Yeah right, your local dealer would do just the same as you with bikes like Canyon or YT, send them back to the factory and wait the same amount if time ti get a new one. If you don’t know how to send a package than you probably need a local dealer.

  • 9 2
@Soni: agree - every time I've dealt with my [Large American bike brand]'s warranty, it's NOT a 1-day, in-and-out affair. It's a couple weeks without my bike, and no loaner, no nothing, just me having to micromanage EVERYTHING to make sure the shop doesn't screw it up. LBS should be great, but in reality, it's a hassle. I'd rather deal directly with [Large American bike brand], but they don't like to talk directly to consumers.
  • 9 0
Do LBS's have rear triangles, just, in stock where you live? lol
  • 4 4
It would probably take just as long at your lbs, plus the time it takes for you to bring it, have it disassembled, reassembled and returned. Unless of course your lbs just replaces it with a generic chainstay for the time being so that at least you can ride your bike. That would be great service, would it Wink ?

I think what the funniest part is that the Specialized/Ohlins recall is not even up yet but Canyon is... I wonder who pays more to advertise with PB...
  • 5 2
@DirtheadNY: I'm so furious with Canyon France! The two times I sent my bike in for the same warranty, it came back in worse shape each time.  @mkotowski1: Warranty vs Recall. Two very different things. Warranty takes forever because bike companies are slow. Your local bike shop sells kids bikes, fixes punctures and pumps tyres for old ladies. But you probs didn't know that
  • 3 0
@Stokedonthis: yeah I paid a $120 a time for 3 frame replacements on my big brand 2016 carbon frame. The rebuild cost is not covered by warranty and is a standard charge.

I could have probably avoided this by going back to the store I bought the bike at (under consumer guarantee act) but that is 300km away.

On the 4th crack they offered me a 2019 bike!
  • 3 1
@DirtheadNY: My 2015 Spectral AL 7.0 EX chainstay and front triangle cracked and it took 2 months to get new frame here in Finland. Canyon asked 99,90€ to change parts to new frame but I will do it myself and in LBS with my own expenses. Earlier SRAM Guides were not working. It took 2,5 months to get new brakes. At least here in Finland Canyon services tooks months - not days or weeks.

I have a spectral, when this first came around they said no failures had occurred due to the cracks so I kept riding my bike. Crack expanded but never failed. They sent me a new one, instillation was easy and if I send the other one back I get $100 towards their online store. Also got a fender and chain lube. They have been super helpful with any emails I have with questions. I love my spectral and have little need for the bike shop support that goes along with the excessive price tag.

Canyon Australia got me a seat stay to Tasmania in 2 days, no charge. When i broke that one too, they warrantied the whole frame and I was riding again in 2 weeks, no onerous questions or charge to me at all. Granted, I'd prefer if they didn't break in the first place. But i thrash my bikes. Cannot fault Canyon Australia.
  • 6 0
@jflb: Ha. With respect to your comment on a mechanic's capacity to run a business: just because a person can form words and sentences using a keyboard doesn't guarantee there is any merit or truth to the ideas contained in them.
  • 4 1
It took six weeks for my LBS to get my warrantied SRAM guides. Then they wanted to charge me to install them.
  • 5 6
@deserat: it's pretty difficult to undo two caliper bolts and the master cylinder clamps.

Then to re torque them properly.

The specially trained lbs staff should be paid minimum 100/hr for that type of work.
  • 4 0
Yeah because LBS's just reach into their replacement chainstay drawer and get ya back out in a jif?
  • 5 1
@deserat: It's not the LBS's job to do free work for you, and it is certainly not their fault Sram had a bad run with brakes. Depending on location, as well as plenty of other factors it is reasonable that it took that long to get the new brakes from Sram as well. To install a new set, that is two brake bleeds, as well as possible internal routing, cable cutting etc. That could take around an hour or so. Don't like paying for labor then learn how to do it yourself, no one is stopping you.

However, if you know for a FACT that they were just slacking off and that's the reason for the delay, then by all means get a free install.
  • 4 1
@onemind123 What about hose shortening, internal routing, time to take the old ones off and ship them, etc. LBS's aren't a charity service, they are a business that makes your life easier.
  • 4 0
@korev: And that is exactly where lbs shops should deliver. They can not ever compete on parts with the internet giants, but this kind of service should be what you pay for in a store
  • 1 0

@ehvahn: ya, shortening cables is tough. Especially if your mom doesn't let you use any sharp objects other then safety scissors.
  • 1 0
@ehvahn: in many countries the LBS would be liable for the repair cost if they sold you the brakes. They would be expected to do a like for like repair/ replacement at no cost. Consumer protection legislation puts them before the manufacturer in terms of responsibility.

@mkotowski1: I have no idea why this was downvoted so much?..
  • 1 1
@islandforlife: This should've been downvoted to buggery!.. What the actual f*ck are you going on about?..
  • 2 0
@ehvahn: FWIW, SRAM just replaced the reservoir and levers. You shouldn't make assumptions on peoples abilities to wrench on their bikes. I pulled the old ones, brought just the brakes into the shop, shortened the cables, bleed, routing. Even used my own stealthamajig. The bike shop initially insisted swapping the parts was part of the warranty. Cool. Then they changed their mind. I appreciate the shop taking care of the warranty, but, in response to direct bike sales, warranties, and LBS, which is what my original post was intended for - just pointing out that going through the LBS isn't always timely or cheap.
  • 1 0
@whattheheel: I thought the Ohlins thing was fixed?
  • 1 0
 I told ya
  • 1 1
@onemind123: sram replaces the lever only. So a bleed is required. Dont want to pay a shop? Oh don't have a need kit? They will run you $75. No Dot 5 brake fluid to use? More money, pretty pricey stuff. As a common warranty item I deal with frequently, and a lot of the time on bikes I didn't sell in my store, you bet I'm going to charge somebody to handle the warranty and install of their levers, bleed their brakes, and adjust their caliper, and half the time decontaminate the pads and rotors and because people over lube a lot.
  • 1 0
@T-woot: Curious what a shop's responsibility is when addressing warranty issues as a SRAM (or any other) dealer? Is there anything in the contract that specifies?
  • 1 0
@islandforlife: True, but [at least] my dealer provides a loaner bike until the warranty work is complete.
  • 108 2
I should be recalled. I’m a crash hazard. Experience talking.
  • 91 1
I got my Spectral early in March and cracked the chainstay within first 100 miles. It was almost invisible hairline crack in the weld, I would be able to ride the bike for a long time before any kind of serious failure. Sent the bike back to Canyon and had it back within a week with new chainstay installed. About a month ago I received a package from Canyon with another replacement chainstay which they've sent to all customers who bought the first batch of the bikes sold in US. Pretty good customer service in my eyes and I feel very confident in the bike. No need for panic. Shit happens, welders have bad days too...

As one of these 820 owners I will say that Canyon's customer service exceeded my expectations for a "buy direct" company. They sent an email regarding this issue back at the end of June, then shipped a replacement chainstay back in August, and offered to reimburse up to $80 worth of labor from a bike shop to replace that part. I personally didn't see any problems with the welds on mine, but will be replacing it anyways.
  • 3 0
Damn man that’s awesome! When I had to have my rear triangle replaced on my 2015 Marin Attack Trail it took over 7 months to get my triangle.
  • 17 0
Interesting info here (for me at least) is that Canyon sold about 820 Spectrals in a 7 month period in the US. My initial reaction was that 820 was not many for their model with the broadest appeal for the entire US market, but then I realised I have no idea, maybe it is a lot. Anyone have any idea about bike sales volumes in this segment?
  • 5 2
You're right, that's not a lot of sales compared to Trek, Specialized, YT, or Santa Cruz.
  • 3 0
if you do the math, its roughly between $2M and $5M usd depending on how many models of what level were sold. Then there is the strive, torque, and sender to add to total sales in the US market. In comparison to names like trek, specialized and Santa cruz, I would imagine they don't have to sell as many units in order to be successful in the same market.

Same thing with Specialized. I went through three chainstays on a Stumpjumper and no recall ever.

In europe Canyon had the **exact** same issue with the previous Spectral. I would not buy the bike again. There are numerous online sources confirming this.

Sadly we do not have laws, that protect the customer to this extent, so you can wait many weeks for replacement part.
  • 4 0
When I had an issue with my Specialized Fuse Carbon, they couldn't get me the same bike. It took 6 months for a frame replacement that ended up being an entirely different bike. It did end up going in my favor because I ended up with a new stump jumper and new RS fork. Kudo's to canyon for being prompt.
  • 8 3
Why is this just now a recall? Canyon contacted my friend in June or July and didn't get him a replacement until September, basically didn't have a bike the entire summer.

  • 3 0
@lenmerderdenfer: the fact of the matter is there are some total spineless c*nts who do shit like that....but it's got to be frustrating. Stay the course, document everything and nail that c*nt at Canyon.

But your story has served as a good warning not to trust anything from Canyon because if a guy like that is on their team...

Are European Bikes not affected or does Canyon just give a f**k about the european product liability?
  • 6 0
 Edit: doesn't
  • 3 1
Seems that (for once) US law about liability are more strict than in Europe. Also the cost of one out-of-court settlement in the US might have scared them.
  • 1 0
All Canyon customers outside of the US were contacted back in June to have the chainstays replaced.
  • 2 0
@jprest: yes, they were contacted and adviced to check the chain stay. If there was a crack, Canyon said they are going to replace it. They wanted to have pictures of it before sending to make sure there is a crack. Pictures also from each side of the bike and one pic of the serial number. If there isn't a crack, they refused to change it.
  • 7 3
As much as I hate Canyon Bikes for terrible customer service, good on them for not just ignoring a major flaw design on their bikes. There are plenty of other bike companies out there that wouldn't ever even admit a problem.
  • 11 3
I doubt very seriously that they are just owning up to this on their own. Likely one of the consumers who had an issue reported this to the CPSC, and once they are involved, you're just along for the ride jumping through their hoops. The fix has to be approved by them, I believe they can also stop you from making any US sales on the products affected.
  • 1 0
There's plenty of other brands notorious for breaking chainstays (cough Transition, Trek, etc) and I haven't seen any recalls. Those brands still break chainstays even on their latest models. In my experience the long term solution of a problem follows accepting and admitting the problem in the short term. Ideally the frames wouldn't break at all, but good on Canyon for accepting and doing something about it.
  • 5 3
They will then ask people to take the bike to ther their local bike shop to fix. My lbs told me they get all manner of warranties come through from direct brands . He told me of a guy who bought a YT , had a issue with brakes and they just told him to take it to his local bike shop and they can sort it under warranty and send them away. Why should they sort out the mess when direct brands are destroying business for Lbs .
  • 17 1

If I was an LBS I would see an opportunity, go out of my way to help the guy, it's a warranty issue after all and you could assist, while ripping a brand like *insert direct to consumer brand here* for selling product and then expecting everyone else to deal with it. Selling parts is likely more lucrative than frames anyways, so if I could get a guy to buy a direct frame online and then buy parts and Maintenance related stuff at my shop, that's not terrible. There is a reason the NAPAs and whatnot exist for automotive side of things...

For any Canyon Spectral owners watching this thread, it would be great if you can comment how Canyon handles this on the back end.

They emailed back in June and sent a replacement part in August, as well as offering to reimburse for bike shop labor

I'm being f-ed over by Canyon France! Buyer beware!

Really only is a relatable experience of you are talking about the same distributor, globally you can have drastically different experience based in the geographic location of your wallet.

@lenmerderdenfer: please, you need to elaborate on your story.

@ColquhounerHooner: My Canyon Spectral 5.0 AL, barely two years old, has a slightly deformed head tube bearing interface. Canyon has lied and sent my bike back to me twice saying that they used anti-seize paste in the headset and now there's no problem! I have it in writing too! After that, I had another supposed mechanic on the phone who said that they don't even have anti-seize paste in the shop when I called him into question - not more than two minutes later, by email another Canyon warranty "expert" wrote to me by email saying that anti-seize paste is used as common practice when needed. ??? They're amazing, if, there is a deformity just fill it with an abrasive metallic paste. Their moto "Welcome to the community". After, I sent a certified letter the the French director, then, I imagine, out of anger, a mechanic detuned my front wheel spokes!!! This was not just spokes settling in - it was severely out of tension. The hub and rim were flexing so much. He must have greased up my front brake pads too. Had to change the pads and degrease the rotor. Before all of this, even before looking at my bike, they tried to sell me a 537 euro repair estimate on every other part of my bike except the reason for my warranty. My bike was in AMAZING condition and ran better and a Swiss watch. WTF! Long story short, this has lasted now for around 2 1/2 months. I was so very polite and accommodating, however, now I'm so pissed.

@lenmerderdenfer: thanks. That all sounds quite bizarre.... so far nothing wrong with my spectral 5.0 al, well apart from a wheel bearing I replaced myself.

Good for Canyon for doing this and going public! Will still never forget when my '07 Rocky Mountain Team RMX welds failed at the headtube off a 15ft. drop and sent me ragdolling. They did absolutely nothing except offer a repair or replacement of the same frame which was almost a year old by then. Worst part, at the time I was a junior rider for them through a grassroots sponsorship. Never rode another Rocky after that. Thank god for having a Leatt on back when people made fun of them.
  • 5 0
The clue to the welds failing is the 15ft drop not shitty welds. Good on ya tho Smile

 @yeti-monster:
If you check the American Internet bro ft conversion chart that works out about real world 5ft so he may have a point.

What the hell. Chainstay cracked on my Nukeproof and they just told me there was nothing they could do about it. This happens to a lot of Nukeproof Megas. I had to buy a new bike from a different company after welding/gussetting with no luck.
@Nukeproofinternational

In Finland, Canyon is not going to change it as it's not broken yeat even I asked to and even my bike belongs to that early set that might have the false chainstay. They replied that it most likely wont crack as it has not cracket in the first weeks (or in months in my case). So different method than in US and Canada.
  • 2 1
So the big market with the big lawyers get the fix and the little guys get screwed. Tells me all I need to know about them.
  • 1 0
@markg1150: I guess it is just because of the laws. In Europe they have to pay doctor bills and repair the bike if someone gets hurt. In the US, there is a risk that you have to pay millions.

It seems Santa Cruz and Canyon bikes are produced at the same CHINESE factory....

panjiva.com/A-I-Industries-Ltd-Shunde-Foshan/4346965

The value for money at Canyon is just outstanding.

My experience with Canyon bikes is very positive. They handled the replacement of the chainstay very well. Just got a new one by Mail and replaced it myself. No waiting time.

Feel bad for Canyon owners. Not being able to ride sucks. Inspect your rig closely before every ride no matter the brand.
  • 7 6
Did I read that right, made in china? Thought only carbon bits came out of China for reputable brands, with the AL bits from Taiwan. If they are building AL bikes in china, no wonder they broke.
  • 2 0
Looks like same factory makes Santa Cruz frames... panjiva.com/A-I-Industries-Ltd-Shunde-Foshan/4346965

Can confirm, that the same problem had the friend of mine. Canyon Czech did the replacement at 4 working days. But man, that was like the thunder when it cracks. We were on trail at that snap... uuuhh.
  • 1 0
Respect to canyon for this... I and a few people I know all cracked our 2016 carbon patrol chainstays and I would of killed for service like this. Patrol, def not huck to flat technology...

+ the Brit was jipped and Silvia's first run was a 60. New judges could be downloaded into the drones as they get the best views anyway. Telemetry from bikes and riders instantly compiles score. Humans are so 21 st century, I'm sure computers can do the job in an unbiased reality. Mad skills and big props to the man of Red Bull, and the women that make it happen.
Where does everybody poop out there? Do the shitters have baby changing platforms?? Mega impact, maybe it should be moved indoors, say dodger stadium.

 Wrong post?

Has anyone with a potentially affected bike from the UK been contacted? I've theoretically got an affected bike if it's not just for the US
  • 3 1
If crash hazard was an actual reason for recall we would have no bikes to ride... XD::::
  • 1 0
old news, my dad got a chainstay in the mail out of the blue like maybe two months ago, pretty sure they just sent it out of the blue
  • 4 1
Bloody carbon fibre always breaki........ Oh.
  • 3 0
Having rear wheel fall off might pose a hazard ?
  • 3 0
Hahah take it to the nearest Canyon dealer, they'll get you sorted.....
  • 2 0
And I thought new spectral was built heavier to last longer without any worries...
  • 1 0
Cheeky for Canyon to name the supplier responsible for the said part. I wonder if the same supplier makes their carbon frame...

How not to launch a brand in the US : make a mass recall in your first year of operation.
  • 2 0
come into my shop buy a bike, break a triangle, get a demo for free until your bike is fixed.
  • 1 0
Canyon USA's recall process is amazing...I received the chainstay in a matter of days and they gave me $100 credit for installing it myself. Process took all of 30 minutes.
  • 4 1
 Send it back to china
  • 3 1
That's what you get when you buy your bikes from AliExpress.....
  • 2 0
Recalls happen on loads of products at some point. Nothing to see here!
  • 1 0
Wouldn't be saying that if it was the carbon part would you.
  • 1 0
@markg1150: Nope, I didnt said anything when Yeti's carbon chainstays where snapping and they had to beef them up. Metal bikes will always win over carbons ones for me. My opinion will never ever change on that regardless of Canyons issue.
  • 4 3
Chainstay failure is due to poor quality of workmanship and probably design. Randy, your're fired!
  • 2 0
Well that's a switch. Usually I'm the crash hazard.
  • 1 0
You all cracking chainstays of average builds or is it mostly bigger clydesdale guys?
  • 1 0
My Canyon Spectral chainstay cracked and I am a large fellow (250lbs) but no0t sure if that was the reason why. Im sure it didnt help though.
  • 2 0
If they've replaced 100% of affected models, why is this even here?
  • 2 0
Gotta love those Devinci frames, still welded in Canada Wink

Guns don't kill people? I think the gun at the very least helps. Otherwise you could say bang bang and wait to see what happens.

Anyway it called red bull compromise for a reason.
Zink crushes the interview portion of the compromise.
Meanwhile that Brit goes home without a gun and no one dies in Britain today.
lots of people running around saying bang bang but no one dies.
Damn if the brits only had guns they could have gun violence too.
But hey, freedom isn't free.
  • 2 0
damn bike manufacturers the world over should make chainstays stronger! :@

Guns don't kill people, carbon frames do.
  • 7 0
 Except these are aluminum frames...
  • 3 2
@colincolin: haha I always think about this song when I read the typical pro gun "guns don't kill people"
  • 1 2
@COnovicerider: Well then they shouldn't be cracking! but this pains my soul, I'm an advocate for aluminum frames.
  • 1 3
2 typos in the first sentence of a press release that should have been issued “MONTHS” ago?!

Canyon, you’ve earned a non-customer for life!
  • 1 4
A company that lacks attention to such a basic detail as spelling, after sitting on a recall that should’ve been issued months ago is not a company you want to buy a bike from.
  • 3 0
@MasterSlater: They notified all affected customers months ago (July I believe) and resolved the issue with replacement parts over a month ago. To say they sat and did nothing seems unfair.
  • 1 1
HA HA HA well done Canyon!!!!
