Spotted: Prototype Cannondale Enduro Bike

Cannondale prototype enduro bike

Cannondale's re-entry into the world of downhill bikes came this year via a wild, high-pivot prototype that can use two shocks (but only one has damping) and offers all the adjustments. Matt Simmonds did the 2019 World Cup season aboard the bike as a toe-in-the-water return to top-flight downhill racing for Cannondale, but don't be surprised to see a full-on factory race effort in 2020.

Downhill bikes are always interesting, but it looks like someone at Cannondale is thinking about a bit less travel, with this all-grey prototype being spotted in the lift line at Mountain Creek Bike Park this weekend. There are some big differences, too. While the downhill bike sees an optional dual-shock layout that lets them separate damping and spring duties, it looks like they've ditched that system here as there's no forward shock mount. There is a water bottle in the same spot, though, while the shock is hidden from view inside the downtube and behind a bolt-on shield, just like on the downhill bike.

The downhill bike (on the right) sees its shock hidden inside the downtube and protected by a bolt-on shield, as does the latest prototype (left).

A few other things to note, including that those sure look like 29" wheels, and that they've skipped the adjustable-length chainstays used on the race bike. The drive-side is mostly hidden by the rider's leg, but given that it employs a similar-ish high-pivot suspension layout, it's a safe bet that it's using an idler-pulley to route the chain up equally high as well.

Of course, Cannondale has the 165mm-travel Jekyll (or 150mm on 29" wheels) as their current enduro-y bike, but something tells me that you have an idea where this might be heading in 2021.

nice of them to remove the shield so our spy can surrepticiously get a view of the shock.

@powderturns: that’s a picture of the downhill bike ya melon
  • 25 2
@powderturns, that downtube shot is from the DH bike that we covered earlier in the year: www.pinkbike.com/news/cannondale-dh-bike-maribor-world-cup-dh-2019.html.

 @kleinblake: i deserve that.

i saw 2 of them, on sabretooth horse trail. the weekend after crankworx. was talking to the guy and joked about taking a pic and he looked like a sabretooth looking at its prey when i said that. only has the downtube shock mount. not the best looking frame tbh

IMO not many new enduro bikes will get launched before Fox 38 is officially out.

 @jollyXroger: nailed it

 @jollyXroger:

My bid:
Fox 38: 160-180mm of travel 2300g +/- 50g, integrated, one piece Crown-Steerer, 1,1/8"-2" steerer. Axle to crown Fox36+10mm. 15mm Boost axle, Price 1599$ +/- 50$

If you have an E-bike then why not just buy a Fox 40 at 2800g is beyond any reasoning...
  • 8 0
@WAKIdesigns: I would say you are unfortunately spot on 15mm Boost. Because if they up it 20mm they will lose the opportunity to piss everybody off in 3-4 years.

Trek Rail is already sporting some wide crown, but seems there is no info on is the steerer tube wider as well or is it just some intermediate solution till Rockshox catches up with an upcoming standard.

@jollyXroger: Just wait for someone at Race Face to wake up the morning after micrdose of meth and go: how could we be so blind... 38! mili... milimeter stanch... handlebar clamp!!! How could we be so blind! So much gains! So much compliance, stiffness to weight ratio. I have discovered the new optimum! Rhonda! Rhondaaa! Give me my phone I need to call CHINA!

@WAKIdesigns: all of that but maybe 20mm axle ,I guess it will happen again ,never know why they turn to the 15 mm (or do I know )

@jollyXroger: Rhonda be like... calling Easton. - Hi Rhonda, - Hi Jasper - How's things? - Unexcting... - oh, sad to hear that... how's Chester? Don't know... calling China some bars you know... He sees things again... one day he is freaking out about losing dollars on loose eyelets, shouting "Next! Next!" Now earning dollars on thicker bars - oh yeah? - yeah - yhm - yeah... - huh? - yyyymmmm... I am tired of Chesters soft... rims... - about that, you kn... - oh I wish someone at Easton could bring some stiff hockey stick for me to test - Oh Rhonda - Oh Jasper...

Suspension designer: "So by separating springiness from dampiness we can optimise overall suspension performance."

Head of marketing: "So according to our pinkbike focus groups it "doesn't look like a session", I guess that's good? But it will need space for a water bottle next to all those springs."

Suspension designer: "Where do you expect me to put the damper, inside the bloody downtube?"
  • 2 0
 hahahahaha very good
  • 1 4
Apparently going for uniquely different spring and shock leverage ratio curves. Given that the spring still essentially requires a dampless shock to maintain linkage alignment, not really sure if the benefits will exceed the negatives outside a pure no-cost limit race strategy. Otherwise appears as more things to maintain and/or go wrong. They clearly threw KISS out the window. The added weight is likely not that relative for DH at least, well maybe.
  • 48 5
 Prediction:

I will be a bad @$$ bike and will have the obligatory 17 different proprietary parts that only Cannondale or Fox can manufacture/service. That way in 4 years when you call them to get your bike/shock serviced they can tell you that those parts are no longer in production and you have to buy a new bike.
  • 10 11
Don't worry there will be relatively few of these left in the wild 4 years later because the frames that are actually ridden will crack and Cannondale (Dorel) won't honor the warranty.
  • 8 3
@ppp9911: idk if you have had any actual experience with their warranty but I warrantied my road bike due to the drop outs not being straight after a year of riding it, and they sent me the new redesigned model year version no questions asked.

Crazy bikes like this are how you know you are at the peak of the economic cycle. This thing is going to launch just as the economy tanks and the demand for $7,500 bikes with NX drivetrains totally evaporates.
  • 15 1
So it sounds like Cannondale is right on schedule.

Depends on who is the next President. Trump will keep the economy going. A Biden/Sanders/Warren win will tank the economy for years.
  • 63 11
@Hpbike: Trump will keep it going? How? By cutting taxes, running up the deficit, and driving us deeper into debt, all to pump up some artificial demand? And what happens when we get to the end of that bubble?
  • 12 4
@chriskneeland: To answer your last question... Just f*ckin send it.
  • 13 6
@Hpbike: yeah bush did wonders for the economy. Trump is even more short sighted.

flag Hpbike (Nov 4, 2019 at 19:55) (Below Threshold)
@LuvAZ: yes Bush had to fix the Clinton problem. Clinton raised taxes and never took care of osama. 9/11 happened. Also unions ruined the car companies under Bush. Bush fixes all that and Obama got a good economy. It was starting to go down hill near the end of his term and Obama built the children lock ups along the border.

America was blessed to get Trump. A true moderate. Low unemployment. Someone to enforce the laws at the boarder. A president that stood up to China. Someone who showed the media’s Fake News side. Plus many other great things.

Also what do people think that a $52 trillion health care plan is going to do. I know it will stink the USA for years.

I know it will sink the USA for years.
  • 4 5
@chriskneeland: The deficit isn’t a tax issue. It’s a spending issue. Give em more money and they will gladly spend it. I’ll take the tax cuts.
  • 7 5
@Hpbike: im sorry u r mistaken. Obama came in at the worst point when the mortgage crisis hit and managed to get us out of it. Unregulated greed will always lead to disaster. Please think for yourself and stop repeating talking pts. We had low unemployment with obama. We had the same situation at the border. We did not stand up to china we hurt ourselves. Separating kids from parents was a tactic for trump. What specific news stories have you investigated and found to be fake? The only fake news is every word that comes out of trumps mouth. Trump is not a moderate he is a dictator (he wants to be) and adores putin. He has admitted to asking foreign powers to investigate a rival. His children and jared (whose father went to prison) have been working in the gov while running businesses with foreign countries. History will not be kind to this family.
  • 9 2
@Hpbike: and btw who took care of osama again?? I remember bush taking care of the wmd 'problem' in iraq. What do u remember?

Even the 50to1 crew can’t make me interested in a cannondale, there’s just nothing to want about them.
  • 18 1
I'd have a Habit. However, I'd probably end up selling it after a few weeks after being disappointed that my steeze numbers have remained static.
  • 8 2
@dingus: I don’t own one but Habit suspension is perfection. They nailed the kinematics better than anyone. Shame the sizing is shorter than a dwarf amputee.
  • 5 1
The Habit is brilliant! I've a 2020 AL4 with 27.5 wheels and it's an absolute riot, takes every opportunity to get airborne, and the rear end snaps around turns like a BMX. I 100% recommend it!

Will there be a limited edition released? I only want something if it is exclusive and costs twice as much as a decent used car.

  • 13 0
@mikekazimer: That you don't have the review written because you really don't know... or that if it's not already complete, it's in the process of being written... or that if it's not already in the process of being written that someone's not just procrastinating about writing it? Wink

@mikekazimer: Well, it's been close to 24 hours, and no review. Well played, @mikekazimer. Well played. Glad I didn't take that bet.
  • 7 0
So intriguing with the tight pants blocking the view.......
  • 7 4
It could be the best bike in the world, nothing can save it from the fact that Cannondale is shady as shit. Their customers are basically product testers and when something goes wrong they don’t even have spares for repairs.
  • 4 5
You are correct, and this is a Dorel issue. The pre-Dorel Cannondale was great. After having 5 Cannondales (including a 2005 prophet still going strong) I purchased a new 2014 carbon Jekyll. Seatstays cracked twice (once about 2 weeks in) with no crashes or impacts to the seatstays and Cannondale refused to warranty.

Will never own another Dorel bike, or Evil and possibly Rocky Mountain (expect to see more on RM soon)
  • 3 1
Guerrilla Gravity has now taken up the mantel of the Made-in-USA ethos. As a former Cannondale owner I can’t help but get giddy supporting such a rad Coloradan company, due in part to their exception warranty and customer service.
  • 9 3
Hard to be stoked on the bike when pants like that are acceptable these days.
  • 2 0
Cannondale has made tons of dogshit bikes on the mtb side. But the current Jekyll 27.5 rips... If you don't mind building/dishing your own wheels. Also the new habit is really good except the seattube lengths are road bike-esque. So in sum.... Cannondale is ALMOST making good mtbs
  • 14 10
It’s a gender neutral bike , it is an enduro bike that identifies itself as an ebike
  • 2 0
Funny, it’s usually an ebike trying to identify as a mountain bike.

Nice to see Cannondale coming back to its roots and doing something interesting and different from the run-of-the-mill bikes that the market as well as its own line-up have grown into. Just wondering if the geometry will keep up with the soundness of the bike's design and construction.
  • 4 2
For the love of GAWD would Cannondale STOP trying to be weird and different and just put out a SOLID well thought out bike! No weird forks, no stupid shocks etc.etc.! Cmon C-Dale! You got this!!!!
