PRESS RELEASE: Burgtec

Enduro has evolved ever closer to downhill. The Enduro MK3 Stem is all you need for hitting the trails with wingsuit type accuracy. This Stem was born out of rider’s demands for precision and for those moments when you have to be inch-perfect.

Taking design elements from our World Cup winning Direct Mount MK3 Stem and splicing these with our critically acclaimed Enduro MK2 Stem. We developed the Stem with Pro’s and Bro’s alike. It was obvious we all live for the same challenge of pushing our own limits. As riders, we want a Stem that inspires confidence to change lines through the middle of a rock garden like it’s no big deal or slap the inside of a turn and translate all your weight to front-wheel traction, ear to ear grins and saying to your mates at the bottom of a trail, “Did you see that?”.

From the start of the design process, it became clear that we wanted extra rigidity. To yield this, we would need to make the Stem using a forging process - a new thing for us - but this allowed us to achieve a more intricate shape than machining alone, it involves applying a huge amount of force to redirect the grain flow of the material to give superior strength, fatigue and impact resistance.

Another area where we felt we could make a significant improvement in rigidity was by increasing the clamping surface area on the steerer tube. We’ve vastly increased this to give a stout, rock-solid feel and as close to the MK3 Direct Mount Stem as we could. Everything is held securely by stainless steel bolts to ensure there is no rust even in the grimmest weather. Like every Burgtec product, it’s fully CNC machined and anodized in all your favourite flavours.

Tested with the world’s fastest jibbers and sendiest racers, this stem has everything you need to hit all those rowdy racing lines or pull that little bit harder off that big sender.

Finally, a company Making aftermarket stems.
  • 25 1
Just what the masses have been waiting for! Something innovative, new, and unlike anything else available. . .
  • 27 1
@Waldon83: I thought I was the only one taping his bars to the steerer directly. I'll try this steerer thingy and see if it improves accuracy.
  • 10 1
I mean, I love my broomstick bars, but imagine if a company made them out of hard metal....or some type of fibre weave! To my knowledge, this has never been done.
  • 11 0
We are truly living in the golden age of stems

 @hbar314:
Gold....
And pink, and orange, and blue, and...

It must be very accurate for sure. Very accurate. Nothing has ever been this accurate. Ever. A wingsuit ain't got shit on this! Not to mention it is available in Iron Bro Orange and Toxic Barbie Pink. What not to like? Nothing. I need this. You need this. Everybody must buy this. Especially those who want accuracy...high accuracy.
What about a 30-day trial period? Those who are not satisfied with the accuracy as advertised, would get their money back.
  • 16 4
Don't be such a toxic barbie
  • 17 0
Oh, thank you! I always thought I needed more accuracy. People keep telling me to look ahead, around, in front of me. Elbows out, in, elsewhere... But I always knew it was the stem. It just wasn't accurate enough. So I just started stacking stems. Three stems, four stems, five... Cutting down steerer tubes is for losers. But now I want Burgtec enduro mk3 stems. They're so accurate I could get away with running two stem, one stem, no stem... I'm not into wingsuit flying but I now want this on my bicycle, unicycle, stand up paddle board, hammer, computer track pad... Accuracy everywhere.
  • 8 0
I'm calling bullshit. Nothing can be this accurate and this enduro at the same time.
  • 4 0
@Trailsoup: Of course it is bullshit! Nothing can beat wingsuit accuracy! Onesie plowers know this. Everybody knows this. It is simply not possible. Even lazer accuracy is sloppy compared to wingsuit accuracy! No way this is remotely as accurate as wingsuit accuracy.
  • 4 0
What the hell, a stem that allows me to change direction though a rock garden. I can finally say goodbye to turning my bars and going straight on. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before!
  • 4 0
In the name of persuing a lightweight enduro bicycle I keep throwing my stem bolts in the bin, only using the top cap friction to steer. But this press release has shocked and inspired me to keep them in, all in the name of my lifes new passion.. accuracy!
  • 3 0
I've lost count of the number of occasions where I've gone to turn left and my stem has made me go right instead. Fortunately the trail also went right so I haven't crashed yet but it's only a matter of time.
  • 1 0
Is this the .308 of stems?
  • 33 2
Wow that was a load of bs. Switch 10 diff stems. If u can tell the diff good on u. Just pick one u think looks cool.
  • 16 1
For real, stems are purely a cosmetic choice.
  • 16 0
Yeah but the weights vary a bit. That what stops me upgrading. I would totally but this if it was like, 100g. The problem is it's 160g which is the same as the bottom spec raceface stem I already have. And it holds the bar. And it holds the steerer. I mean, really? What's the difference?
  • 10 0
I can always tell a Renthal Apex stem... creaks like a mofo!
  • 3 0
@DHhack: that’s what I’ve been searching for for weeks now, thank goodness Burgtec launches this new stem otherwise you would never have posted and I would never know it was my stem????
  • 2 0
@RonSauce: Mostly yes, if they are good, then it's just cosmetics. I've had an Answer stem (31.8/60) which kept turning on the steerer (mind it was a new bike/new fork/new stem). I've tried everything, torqued bolts, over-torqued bolts, carbon gripper paste, roughing up the surface with sandpaper, nothing helped. Quite often after rough descents, my stem was off by sometimes over 5°! Got a Joystick Binary (31.8/50) which is totally fine.
Still don't know what was wrong with the Answer stem, probably faulty tolerances? Don't know.

 Wing suit accuracy???
  • 16 1
Fastest jibbers and sendiest racers? And I'm over here looking at fast racers and sendy jibbers like a clown.
  • 10 0
Lovely looking stem, but for that kind of money I expect proper use of apostrophes in my press releases.
  • 2 0
The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.
  • 5 0
WTF is with the wizardry talk?

"...we wanted extra rigidity. To yield this, we would need to make the Stem using a forging process - a new thing for us..."

followed up by

"Like every Burgtec product, it’s fully CNC machined....."
  • 3 0
Agree that the marketing is bollocks. But it's perfectly reasonable to forge then machine the same material, they are not analogous processes.
  • 2 2
It just isn't machined billet...ya know, the expensive stuff.
  • 1 1
@JoeRSB: Yeah, but "fully cnc machined" seems to suggest completely machined from a block, not forged then machined.
  • 9 1
I think the mk2 looks better. It was classic and boxy but still not too heavy, the mk3 isn't so unique anymore
  • 2 1
Agreed, I really like the Mk2. Now this looks like every other stem out there.
  • 2 3
Wasn’t a very good stem though the new design should take a lot of the flex out.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: People though the old stem was flexy? Who?
  • 1 1
@justanotherusername: it’s a notoriously flexy stem. Full disclaimer I’ve never actually used one myself. I want to use bergtec stuff because they’re a local company but there’s always something I don’t like for example running the pedal to close to the crank but I think I’ll give them a go with this new stem. It looks a much stiffer design.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: I haven’t ever heard that about their stems - they certainly look anything but flexy but as neither of us have tried one, we both have different opinions based on hearsay it’s probably best left to the opinions of people who have tried one.

Either way, disappointing they don’t seem UK made now.
  • 6 2
It's better looking than the older versions but still no looker imo. Sticking with my 77designz one and burgtec bars me thinks. My 35mm one is almost half the burgtecs weight. I know people want a bit of security with a stem but they could have machined a good bit more out of this to take it in line with renthal etc.
  • 14 1
Have you ever used a renthal stem? Literally everyone I know has had an issue with the stem creeking or slipping.
  • 1 0
@toop182: which Burgtec bars do you use with that stem?

I thought there might be a rise restriction owing to the single piece construction but I haven't been able to see anything on 77's website.
  • 2 0
@samfr1000: ridewide carbons with 20mm rise, no issues at all. Really looks nice with the bars! I went raw finish on the stem.
  • 2 1
@thenotoriousmic: I've had 4 over the years. I love motocross so thought I had to have renthal! Duo was a bit of a pain for the creaking and the bolts rusted pretty easy which annoyed me. I did not have the slipping issue but I know others who did. More a tolerance issue I would say? I am a sucker for heavily machined products hence the 77 stem. Burgtec make some banging products, the pedals, bars and saddle are all great however.
  • 1 2
@thenotoriousmic: I have two, they don't creek nor slip. But yeah it seems to be a thing that's true.
I do use parktool carbon paste, which is about the most aggressive choice when it comes to carbon pastes. I've tried them all because my racer has this super annoying shifting Ergon seatpost.
  • 1 0
@toop182: reckon I could get something taller in there without an issue? Also something aluminium.
  • 4 0
@toop182: they look great but I just can’t be arsed having to wedge my tyre between a tree to straighten my bars because my stems slipped again. Honestly renthal stems are the only stems I know that have this issue.
  • 1 0
This is great news! I have been looking at the 77des stem. The weight is insane. I wonder if a 20mm rise Raceface bar would fit.

Did you have to crank the clamp open a bit to fit the bar in? We used to do it in the olden days I remember. The combo of Syncros stem and Azonic 2" rise bar was a bridge too far, but I remember using two screwdrivers to upen the clamp to fit an Orangr Supercross bar in one at the shop. That was a low rise bar, 20mm I think.
  • 1 0
@jaame: it really depends on the bar. They have a youtube video on how to sneak them though without marking the bar and a list of ones they know fit. Worth a check mate
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: that's interesting. I've not had that on my apex one I had last. Pretty scary stuff if it's doing that all the time.
  • 2 0
@jaame: also dont wedge it open, please watch the youtube video on how to install it. You turn the bar round as you push it through to a void the pinching on the bar. I know a 20mm rise raceface bar fits but not sure for any higher risers
  • 1 0
@toop182: Can you post a lnk to the video please? That would be appreciated.
  • 1 0
@toop182: No worries I found it. Look at that stack of EXT shocks in the background. Wow. That's a bit of cash sat right there!
  • 1 0
@toop182: I just found my next stem.
  • 3 0
Everyone's missing the most important point - being that you can now see the lovely Burtec logo in the middle of your Burgtec bars which was sadly (and strangely) hidden on the MK 2 with the big front plate. Clearly the only reason for redesigning the stem.
  • 7 0
How do you field test a stem?
  • 8 0
You just throw it like a discus into various fields to see how it holds up.
  • 9 3
This just makes me stop trusting any Burgtec product.
  • 7 1
No mention of where the stems made?
  • 6 0
 Chinatown
  • 5 0
which means not in the uk
  • 3 0
I thought that - looks like its made overseas and still the same money, bit of a shame really but business is business.
  • 1 0
Consumer: Buys bike A over B since it´s 50 grams lighter. In the bike park struggles with jumps, rough tracks etc (not because of the bike, just skills Smile . Friends suggest to make the bike burlier. Consumer buys a MK3 and a coil shock, and throws the stock parts into the bin.
  • 3 0
 Fastest jibbers?

I don't recall my 1 year old being part of the testing; he pulls a jib faster than a Craig Evans bar turn when he don't got his milk in time.
  • 2 0
Since when has Gold Bullion looked like an orange, and of all the colours available to man they still choose to churn out out the same generic options everyone else does, and why not 5mm hardware bolts?
  • 2 0
I am waiting for the MK-4. It will be even more accurate like a Ginsu knife. With even more clamping area. Rock gardens won't stand a chance
  • 1 0
Uuuhhhh, Forging stems is nothing new, 30+ years of "aligning grains" in the making, plenty of options as good or better on the market, for half the price. Credit where credit is due, the aesthetics are nice.
  • 3 0
Looking forward to discounted Mk2 stems. Penthouse Mk4 were seriously cheap once the Mk5's were out.
  • 4 0
My nukeproof horizon stem looks way better
  • 4 0
nicer than the mk2 but man they charge a lot of for a stem.
  • 2 0
I've always picked stems based on 2 criteria. Size and looks. Thats it. And I've never been able to tell any difference otherwise.
  • 3 0
Stack height is the big selling point for many of us
  • 1 0
@chakaping: I kind of lump things like stack height and rise in when I say "size". Main point being I've never noticed any real difference in stiffness, handling, or feel between any stem I've ever ridden.
  • 2 0
To be honest I chose my stem (Spank Spike) on some solid armchair engineering. I have seen faceplates fall off from friends' bikes so four bolts for a single faceplate brings some failsafety. I don't quite expect the same from those separated faceplates as featured here. And forging gives a better grain structure than what's left of it after (CNC) machining so Spank (and some other bigger companies) win it there too. Finally, I think the organic shape (based on armchair engineering, mind you) makes more sense to me, how there is more material around the bolt holes to distribute and channel the loads to the where it needs to be transferred (so basically from handlebar to steerer). So in all fairness, this Burgtec stem isn't all that bad. Instead of CNCd out of a single solid billet, it has been machined out of a forging (just like the much appreciated Hope hubs) and the shape makes sense in a way comparable to how the Spank stem makes sense to me. At least more than the more angular Rental stems. But it doesn't win it for me because the Spank stem is cheaper and has a single four bolt faceplate.

Again mind you, the fine art of armchair engineering could give varying results based on color names, bling factor, marketing and intimidation. We respect others' results and maintain a social, physical and mental distance at all times.
  • 1 0
In addition to the criteria you've mentioned, I always like to have a "zero-gap" on one side of the handlebar clamps. It makes installing much more comfortable.

I've also had a stem (Answer 31.8/60) which didn't stop turning on the steerer on me. Often after rough descents, my handlebars were turned over 5°! No amount of torquing helped to solve the issue, not even carbon gripper paste or roughing the surfaces with sandpaper. So there definitely are differences in stability in stems.
  • 2 0
Tbh their other stem is a bit ‘boring’ looking for an expensive aftermarket stem, I much prefer this.
  • 1 0
Stems are a problem that just don't need solving in my eyes. But the day Chris King release a stem and seat collar that match their hubs, I'll lose my $hi%
  • 2 0
I wonder how one would test a stem? Huck to flat and see if it holds up?
  • 5 0
Not sure it would man, we all know that stems are the weakest point on the bike. You can tell from the way it looks that it would fold over, sure of it.
  • 3 1
Were people really having flex issues with their 40/50mm stems!?
  • 5 1
Yeah every time I buy stems that cost less then 1 euro per gram the bar just twists about 10 degrees to every side. Those raceface ride stems are so flexible!!
  • 1 0
The only thing missing in this add is where it holds my beer, if it told Mel that I would’ve bought all colors lol.
  • 2 0
Has anyone ridden a 50mm or shorter stem that wasn’t precise?
  • 2 0
Inch perfect - measured in millimeters.
  • 1 0
I just ordered a DaBomb Rifle Grenade because its called the Rifle Grenade.
  • 2 0
Well it looks better than the previous model, that block design was awful
  • 1 0
If only, need to expand the line with 32mm length, and Kermit green...
  • 1 1
 31,8 mm.... thank you!
There are basically no 31,8mm/~40mm/0° Stems on the market.
  • 2 0
Truvativ hussafelt....theyre like 25 dollars too. I think they might be heavy though, as if what your stem weighs makes any sort of difference
  • 1 0
You can get an adapter to run 31.8mm bars on 35mm stems. I cut mine in two to make it wider.
  • 1 0
 Spank Spoon.
  • 1 0

  • 1 1
A simple thing like having a colour called Purple Rain is enough for me to want one, shallow, but true Razz
  • 1 0
big miss on the color name with the orange -- #BrOrange
  • 4 0
"Irn Bru" is a bright orange soft drink from Scotland. It's a play on that, so they didn't miss anything.
Perks of being wingsuit accurate I guess...
  • 1 0
I like! stout with no sharp edges. Count me in
  • 3 6
Looks awesome! Love my MK2 stem and I won't be changing anytime soon but if I were in the market this would be top of my list! @burgtec-limited have really nailed their branding and design recently. Keep up the good work.
  • 4 0
Thank you for the press release.
  • 2 2
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better looking than the last version! Nice job burgtec!
  • 1 0
 Steamy!

 Is this a JOKE?
  • 1 0
 TOXIC BARBIE COLOR?!

 Looks like an Apex.

 Looks like a stem!
