Burgtec Announce New Penthouse Mk 5 Pedals - The House Show 2020

After three years of development, Burgtec has finally unveiled their long-awaited new version of the Penthouse flat pedal.

The Mk 5 carries a similar shape to the previous generation, and the recently released composite pedal, but Burgtec has listened to rider feedback to try and improve their latest offering in more subtle ways. One of the biggest differences with the new pedal is a lower weight with almost 46 grams shaved from the Mk 4. The Mk 5 now sits at 379 grams for the pair (with a steel axle). They have also made the pins narrower and longer for improved grip and created a more concave shape to help keep your feet on the pedals.

As well as these changes Burgtec have decided to boost the pedal platform further out from the crank to avoid catching your feet on the arm of your crank, which was a heavily requested feature from users of the past generations of the Penthouse flat pedal. Finally, the bushing spec has been upgraded to Igus wear-resistant W300 Endurance Runners. These apparently use full contact oil seal to keep at bay the kind of wet muddy conditions they're used to riding in the Macclesfield area.

The new Penthouse Mk 5 pedals will be available from today and will cost £109.99/ $149.99 USD / €129.00 EUR.

 @Arierep: I think I'll stick with the Horizons... these looked awesome at first but I'm not a fan of using pins to create concave when the center pedal body is still raised. Those bearing bulges make these convex as far as I'm concerned.

 Cost more than 500GBP or I am not going to buy them. In general I won't buy anything from the industry for less than this.

 Currently running the Mk4s, and to me they would be perfect if they were a little further away from the cranks, as mentioned in the article. It would be amazing if Burgtec came out with an extended spindle kit, or something along those lines for that.

 I just got the composite pedals and they have a boosted axle but I’m not sure if they’d fit into the alloy body. You’d have to ask them

 Such a thing exists - it's called the boost steel axle and costs 24 notes. Unfortunately it's out of stock absolutely bloody everywhere. I was told it might be back in by the end of Feb

 They do, it's called a "boost" axle.

 @DonnySoldier: And yet, they still look like the platform will be hugging the crank rather closely. Maybe not as close as it used to but still closer than most other pedals on the market.

 @Ferisko: the platform is close but you can see it is quite angled so the pins aren't that close to the crank arm. Looks like you can have your shoe on all the pins and still have plenty of clearance from the crank

I've ordered a pair, fingers crossed. For £25 I thought it was worth a punt even if they email in the next few days saying its a month long wait for stock

 I actually like the stubby axle on the Mk 4- prefer how it feels compared to DMR vaults etc.

 Pretty sure they didn´t develop for 3 years straight. It´s just that they´ve decided it´s now time for a new pedal. But you know, marketing and stuff.
Also, 129€ seems pretty fair to me for a pedal with a, so far, good reputation from a small manufacturer. There are mainstream manufacturers charging more for their pedals than that, as far as i remember (been on clips for years though, so i might be wrong). They´re pricy of course, but not outrageous for their segment as far as i can tell.

 If you read the chromag dagga article on nsmb.com you can see how much goes into pedal design, update and production. And testing takes 2 years, because you want to see if it will Infact last 2 years of hard use under pros. Knowledge is power dude.. and it also takes time and costs money ..

 @blackbirdworks: I can't wait for the plastic ones to come out. The bearings in my Spank pedals are getting pretty sloppy and a new bearing kit costs about the same as a pair of the plastic burgtecs on discount.

 They’re still tight up against the cranks, so they’ll still be shit. They should have used the axel that they used on their plastic pedal.

 @thenotoriousmic: Yo, we have actually increased the distance they sit from the crank by 5mm compared to the MK4. The axle looks very similar in length to the MK4 however most of this increase is done with a greater angle the pin sits away from the axle. Please see the photo for reassurance.

 @burgtec-limited: the pedal platform is still tight up against the the crank though. Your still going to put your foot on it and your foots still going to scrape the crank arms especially if your riding in impacts. Look at the two most popular pedals. Vaults and horizons. There’s a 17mm gap between the pedal platform and the crank arm with horizons, vaults are similar. All you’ve done is moved the pins further away from the crank and left the platform slammed against the crank, I was hoping to see a alloy version of your really good plastic pedal which isn’t slammed against the crank arm.

 @burgtec-limited: Can you confirm the platform size and how/where its measured?

Because looking at the MK4 PB review ( www.pinkbike.com/news/burgtec-penthouse-mk4-pedals-review-2015.html ) it mentions the platform being 102x105mm then the MK5 says 100x102mm on product website, yet in this PR its mentioned its bigger than the MK4.

Will there be a Ti Axle for the MK5?

 I was at Stif Mountain Bikes yesterday afternoon and I had a good look and feel of the MK5s and also the DMR Brendog pedals. Both very nice pedals. The quality of manufacture is stunning on both. Wow!

 I have 4 year old Chesters on my bike. A friend breaks a pedal at least once a year, personally I have never broke a pedal.

 Look real nice. Only thing they're missing IMO is a chamfer under the leading edge to encourage the pedal to glance off - rather than snag on - rocks/roots etc

 I have ridden vaults for a year and have destroyed the bushings twice and bearings once. I cant understand why, but i have bad lick with pedals. Also had nukeproofs and broke both spindles in the same time. But vaults paired with 5.10 impact pros have unparaleld grip

 If you are interested in cheaper offerings, I would definetly sugest rf chesters (a bit smaller platform, but great grip and durability for the price.

 @WAKIdesigns: I have the OneUp alus and they are so good. Have to adjust my seatpost a couple mm everytime I switch between them and my XT clip pedals because they are so low-profile.

My shins wish they had less sharp pins though.

 @Upduro: I filed the pins down to 3mm right away (had Boomslangs before, i learned my lesson). Works very well with my Freeriders Pro. At first the bulge on alu pedals was bothering me. But then it made me discover the "correct" foot position on pedals. Needless to say as soon as I got use to having the axle behind the ball of the foot, I drilled new holes in my clipless shoes to move the cleats further back..

 Boomslangs are the best -just swap the inner pins to grubscrews to make them more concave. they are expensive on paper but you get them for a good price online.

 Crankbrothers Stamp 3s or 7s are great options also.

 @dpodgajski: You're not alone. Which is why I now use Nukeproof pedals. Plus (well you could the last time I checked) you can buy all the individual parts separately. Burgtec pedals are lovely though.

 @WAKIdesigns: I’ve not been impressed with my Crankbrothers Stamp pedals, they are nowhere near as urable as my Hope F20s.

 @lewiscraik: with Crankbros it’s about the platform size and it’s influence it has on stuff you can do with the bike. No footers, trying can cans, unwanted losing pedal in the air. I had Hopes, switched the pins right away because despite having Quite fresh 5.10 the grip felt weird. I really fet the lack of concave. Very solid product, just not my thing.

 @funkzander: I love my vaults but not gonna lie I'm tempted to try the new Chromag Daggas, hoping there will be reviews and comparisons to the vaults soon. $180 to try something that might not be better is a bit steep.

 @WAKIdesigns: Did you have the F20 with the old style pins or the new hollow ones? Got a pair, did not ride it yet, but I'm considering to either remove the pins in the middle or at least shorten them to improve the concavity.

 @WAKIdesigns: Yeah, they had a lot of complains regarding the grip with their first version of those smooth pins so they introduced new ones that are hollow and kind of sharper.

 MK4's are pretty grippy however I find them to be to close to the crank, even with extended axle. Gonna put Vaults back on soon.

 @nickkk: They don't say by how much, though. Hard to confirm without having them in hand and measuring how far are the inboard and outboard pins from the crank, but it seems like they are still rather close. MK4 were one of closest to the cranks on the market with a relatively small platform. So unless they boosted them a fair bit they still won't be for wide foot riders.

 how do you unscrew pins with these ?

 Looks like grub screws wound in from underneath, but the hole is shouldered rather than a straight through-hole so you've got something for the screws to bottom against - looks good !

 looks like they are not bolt thru and you screw/un- them from other side with what I'd guess is 2,5-3mm hex

 @bikefuturist: looks like a neat design, i always liked grubscrews regarding their feel but absolutely hate to fiddle with damaged ones. the specialized boomslangpins are great (screw from underneath , good grip, easy to remove ) but dont give the exact feel of a grubscrew.
