Brandon Semenuk Wins Oregon Trail Rally

Nov 9, 2021
by Alicia Leggett

Brandon Semenuk is on a roll. Fresh off a historic win at Rampage, he closed out the competition season by taking victory at the Oregon Trail Rally, beating out his Subaru Motorsports USA teammates Travis Pastrana and Ken Block, who took second and third.

Until now, Semenuk hadn't won a rally race this season, winning stages now and again but never quite securing the overall result. This time around, with codriver John Hall, Semenuk managed to pull ahead on the second of three days of racing, and though he swapped stage wins with Pastrana for the rest of the race, he maintained the lead and eventually won by 23.4 seconds over Pastrana and 49.8 seconds ahead of Block.

@noseussforaname: Exactly. These guys don't stand a chance in WRC. Totally different level. Block just managed to crash his car in every rally...

Would be nice to see him race Nicolas Vouilloz, Gee Atherton and Ben Reid too. A bike race, then a car race.
  • 14 0
@jclnv: Please. WRC is on a completely different level. All Block and other national drivers have been successful at doing in WRC is wrecking cars. Ogier, Tanak, etc... are not worried in the least. Their skills are leaps and bounds beyond ARA drivers. This is not to downplay the achievements. Winning is no small feat. It just is not the same.

@jmhills: Block's WRC career has been an expensive one!!!
  • 18 0
@UPBike: I will admit he has really great exhibition skills. What he does is not easy. When you make him do it on surfaces that are uneven and unpredicatable, things culminate in bits of car flying through the air and fire balls.

Block is cool. He is one hell of a marketing genius. A WRC level driving skill he is not. WRC loved having him as it instantly spiked their watch numbers. They loved him for the revenue they could generate. Not for his ability to genuinely come out and challenge the greats. You could throw someone like Sainz in a rally car right now, decades removed from his last competitive drive, and he would smoke Block across numerous stages.

I spectate and photograph all levels of American motorsports. It is fantastic to watch. We have some phenomenal talent that could be WRC level but the support is not there. If you wanted circle track/ NASCAR, you can find sponsors. Rally, it is expensive, tough and your car is not the rolling billboard that American businesses need in order to justify the expense.
  • 3 0
@jmhills: Totally agree with you. I was cheering on block in the WRC rallies that he participated in. And yes, sadly the US has no interest in rally....
  • 1 0
@jmhills: I'm not too much into motorsports, but I'm curious. You mention WRC is more challenging than ARA, but how does it work in MX then? I noticed Jeffrey Herlings won the MXGP again, but it seems Americans care more about the AMA series. Are these more challenging too? It is funny to learn that a national series would be more challenging than an international competition.
  • 2 0
@vinay: It has to do with access. For rally to really become a thing, we need more of them. Every state across the nation has multiple MX tracks and motorcycles are cheap. Hell, our MTBs cost more in many cases. Due to litigation concerns and the costs of setting up a car to go stage racing, there just are not enough races and courses for people to try their hand at. For rallying, the ARA is a good series here in the states. The stages themselves just are not the same as a WRC style set of stages.
  • 3 0
@jmhills: Are motorcycles cheap? I thought the cost to keep them running (not just fuel, but parts replacement due to wear and the costs of component service) is pretty high. Again, I'm not into motorsports so I'm not sure but I recall mountainbikers (Romaniuk, Gracia etc) back in the days said that riding bikes is cheap and riding motorbikes is expensive.

That said, I do get that the cost of riding rally cars is on another level and maybe there is not really a cheap entry. I can imagine for road car driving people can start with go-karts but I don't know if driving a buggy (which may be the dirt equivalent) really compares to riding a rally car.
  • 1 0
@vinay: You can find new Yamaha 250s for $7500. One that is a couple years old but low hours is around $3500. Not cheap but equivalent to many new MTB's. Consumables in all motorsports are expensive but they are cheaper with dirtbikes than with cars. With rally, it is not just the cost of the car, its getting to a place where you can actually race it. There just are not as many places willing to open their roads for it.
  • 3 0
@vinay: there was a time when AMA Nationals were at a higher level than MXGP, in the past decade MXGP has undoubtedly been the premier series with the fastest riders. But even then, the difference between AMA and MXGP is significantly smaller than the difference between ARA and WRC. That would be like comparing a local race series to MXGP.
  • 1 0
@chrisclifford: Thanks. Makes me wonder. A few years ago Jeffrey Herlings had to miss a couple of MXGP rounds due to injury which implied he could no longer win the series. I recall he considered racing the AMA instead but I don't know whether he actually did. If he did, I wonder how he fared.
  • 1 0
@vinay: he raced the Ironman National in 2017 and went 1-1
  • 3 0
@jmhills: Block is a good marketer and showman but not a proper WRC driver, saw him in the Rally du Valais. The locals were faster on cheap Renault Clio and Peugeot 206-207. I think Loeb ( famous Rally driver in France) won against Block, Pastrana on a Citroen DS3. Subarus are way too big to be competitive in Europe too. I had an Impreza STI and have a Jdm Subaru B4 RSK. They are fun cars but not nimble, I would prefer a cheap Clio/Megane RS in the Alps than a WRX STI.

@Ba1rog: Loeb can beat anyone. He is one of the greatest drivers ever. In any discipline.

@headshot: Is the rally industry pretending to be doing anything for the environment? No, they are not. There in lies the difference. You cannot "greenwash" if you are not pretending to be green in any way.
  • 1 0
@vinay: i think the issue in the USA is that the focus is really on Supercross. Ultimately, that's what drives the sport here. MX in summer is almost an afterthought, lower ratings, less money, and half the guys either don't even line up or end up getting their surgeries done then so they can be at 100% for Anaheim 1 in January. The MXGP guys focus on MX all year, whereas in the USA it's probably 70% SX focus to 30% MX - as a guess. The interesting part, to me anyway, is that riders competing in SX and MX in the USA in general seem to make more money than MXGP riders. I'm curious why more of the top MXGP guys don't come over, but it might be that learning SX is difficult and risky.
  • 1 0
@shredddr: Ah, goes to show how little I know of the sport. I actually had to look up the differences between SX and MX. I recall I did watch these SX races on tv back in the days, though I recall they were called stadiumcross back then (or maybe that's exactly what SX stands for) and we had riders like Dave Strijbos and John van den Berk competing. Yeah, whether Jeffrey Herlings would do well there I don't know. He does seem quick out of the corners so I can imagine he would. But I can imagine it might also require different (more nimble possibly) gear and adapting to just that for a quick mid-season switch is a bit much.
  • 1 0
@vinay: SX = Supercross. I think SX is more technical, and the bike setup required is different - mainly stiffer suspension, which I gather is needed to make it through whoops at speed and time rhythm sections. You'd have to think Jeffrey has the chops to adapt to anything and do well. Winning at that level, we'll probably never know.
  • 1 0
@shredddr: there are GP guys who’ve come over like Ferrandis, Roczen, Musquin all of whom have had success. But it’s definitely interesting that more don’t
  • 1 0
@chrisclifford: totally - but I do think most of those guys came over when they were pretty young - 21 or less and coming out of the MX2 class. I can't think of anyone who came over once they were established in the MXGP class.
  • 1 0
@shredddr: true, maybe by the time they’re on 450s they’re committed to where they want to live. Also a lot of these guys are only on 450s for a handful of years before retirement. I’m American but I’d rather win an MXGP title then an AMA title whether it be MX or SX
  • 1 0
@chrisclifford: Yeah, fair. I think the core MX crowd would agree with that. I also think if you polled sponsors, agents and the like, they'd say the SX title is the most prestigious, but maybe they just think it has the most value to an athlete and sponsor...
I'd be interested to know what Eli and Jeffrey make, all-in, in a year of racing, not that money is everything...

Okay. Good god. It isn't a mystery as to why this is being downvoted. Anti-vaxxers are championing Kyle's story as a reason to not get vaccinated. Kyle's experience is tragic, but ultimately very very rare coming from an otherwise overwhelmingly safe vaccine. His story is sad, yes. But it's being taken advantage of to further a dangerous narrative - that people shouldn't get vaccines. Pushing Kyle's story to a wider audience would further the damage already done by those politicizing his personal tragedy. No vicious intent.

@krumpdancer101: Any link between any Covid vaccine and Bell's Palsy has not been confirmed. It's more possible that Bell's Palsy is linked to being infected by Covid - even more reason to get vaccinated. Read this paper:

Kyle has/had pericarditis/myocarditis. Rate is 10 per 1,000,000 after first dose and 67 per 1,000,000 after second dose. mRNA vaccines only. For comparison, gun death rate in USA in 2019 was 40 per million. Vehicle deaths 110 per million people. Note that rate for last two is per population, whereas the former is per dose. For a rate per population you could halve the incidence rates because about half the USA population has had mRNA vaccinations. Roughly.

Do we know the rate of mild myocarditis and pericarditis when symptoms only appear when the body is under vascular stress? I’d like to see 1000 healthy people perform a Vo2 test post vaccination. Regardless of the adverse events, the “vaccines” themselves have statistically zero efficacy so it’s ultimately irrelevant.
  • 49 8
@krumpdancer101: I think Kyle's story is important, and I also think it's being used to tell a narrative that the data shows isn't in the public's best interest. That is to say, people are using it to suggest getting the vaccine is more dangerous *on average* than not getting it.
Yes, it's possible that for the individual Kyle, it turned out to be more dangerous to have gotten it. And that sucks, and I would be pissed as hell if I had to experience that, and would want to hold somebody accountable. But, the data seems to consistently show that risks of injuries from contracting COVID, regardless of age group, are statistically greater than from the vaccines. And if the result of him telling this story, and it getting shared all over, is that fewer people get the vaccine, therefor statistically increasing odds of contracting COVID and thus experiencing injuries or health issues, then I think it's hard to argue it isn't harmful to blast that story on a platform such as pinkbike.
Again, this really sucks for Kyle, and there's nothing about the data that helps him or anybody in his position. I really feel for him, and being such a relatable person to the mtb community, made me think. This whole pandemic is about doing what's best for everybody, on average, and unfortunately that means some people, like Kyle, will get the short straw.

I find it much more convincing when someone goes against the narrative like Peter Doshi did the other day. I also find it healthy to remind myself of this quote in these days of groupthink. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain.

@GotchaJimmy: I try not to comment much on PB, and I’ve definitely never made a post about COVID here. However, here are my thoughts. In New Zealand the last safety report said there were 192 cases of myocarditis following vaccinations. There were 1125 serious adverse effects in total. There were 6,606065 individual doses administered at the time. That means you have a 0.003% chance of getting myocarditis and a 1.7% following a dose of the Pfizer vaccine in our population. These situations are horrible because you can only go off the probabilities. If I had to cross a road to get away from an angry man trying to fight people (COVID metaphor) and knew I had a 1.7% chance of getting hit by a car I would cross every time, but you were one of the 1.7% who got hit you might tell people to beware crossing the road. What happened to Kyle is awful, listen to what he has to say, but put it into perspective as well. I hope he gets the support he needs and deserves. www.medsafe.govt.nz/COVID-19/safety-report-34.asp

@krumpdancer101: that Bell's palsy link is BS. Stop spouting unproven things
  • 21 23
@Vilhelm: And to put that risk into real world relative terms, the disease you’re taking that risk to possibly reduce symptoms has a 98.84% survival rate (-70 years old), those who die have on average 2.6 comorbidities (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cancer etc), and finally, the vast majority have little more than flu-like symptoms.

How is that risk/benefit looking now? I think you could argue the case for these ‘vaccines’ if they immunized against disease but most countries are trending towards higher percentages of the hospitalized who are vaccinated. And how many boosters are you going to take? The spike is cytotoxic so an accumulation of bi-annual doses is madness. At that stage you may as well get the virus, treat it with antivirals or whatever, and have vastly superior, likely lifelong, immunity.

@jclnv: Higher percentage of vaccinated hospitalizations is a good thing as that means a drastically lower number of total cases requiring hospitalization. Of course the percentage will go up when the majority of people are vaccinated, it's the total number of cases that's important
  • 29 17
Wow, yet another anti vaccine thread, you’d think we’d have moved beyond this nonsense by now.

As a medical provider, I recommend the vaccine for all people regardless of their medical history. Many people fail to remember that the earliest COVID vaccinations were specifically targeted at those most at risk.

But hey, you can choose to skip the vaccine and take your chances, I could care less if someone makes that decision, but don’t be surprised if you get really sick.

My wife and I are both medical providers and in the nearly twelve months since vaccinations for COVID started, neither of us we seen serious reactions to the vaccine.

I just got my booster today, shoulder is barely sore, I’ll ride in the morning before work.

Get vaccinated, you don’t wanna be that person who wishes they’d gotten it after it’s already too late. Hindsight is 20/20.

@jclnv: Of course the vast majority of research is funded by corporations because few independent researchers have the money. When a company needs to test a new product, they will essentially hire a university or hospital etc. to do INDEPENDENT testing/trials. All methods etc are published so that anyone else can duplicate the results - that's why 'peer reviewed' exists. Anyone caught falsifying results are done e.g. that dickhead ex-doctor who started all the MMR and autism bullshit who falsified results for his own financial gain.

 @src248: Cases? Based on PCR?

Regardless, the number of hospitalizations appear to be increasing in the UK since August, which I guess is due to seasonality? If you look at the data, every country seems to have a series of waves that seem to be diminishing in size as the vulnerable and elderly are picked off. According to Carl Heneghan (Oxford) this is why we’re currently seeing lower mortality. This makes sense to me as it’s the same elderly demographic who are dying, regardless of ‘vaccine’ status.

@MmmBones: although I must say getting pericarditis from the vaccine sucks, one must add that there is a 3-4 times higher chance of getting pericarditis from having Covid 19 than getting it from the vaccine.

@iamamodel: sadly no point putting logic and data and facts to the Anti Vaxxers. My Nephew had an adverse reaction but is fine today. I know approximately 100 people reasonably well of which only 5 are not vaccinated. apart from my nephew none of those vaccinated have had adverse reactions.

Best thing is let the Anti Vaxxers remain so. When they get Covid they can go to the ICU and then risk death 100X more than the rest of us.

Its Darwin's theorem come back for good purpose.

You’re unlikely to hear them on CBC though bro. If you take issue with anything specific that I’ve said, point it out and I’ll try and find the source. I have been reading a lot lately though, as everyone should, especially parents. BTW I strongly suspect you fit into the definition of anti-vaxxer, unless you’re dumb enough to take any government mandated vaccine.

This is the weird thing I’ve noticed amongst the vaccinated. It’s like a cult. If you’re not in our “I trust the science” (as if there is such a thing as ‘the science’j you’re going to go to a sort of COVID hell.

BTW have you got a source for those numbers? They’re even better than Pfizer’s and they’re complete junk.

@Gristle: If this study is accurate www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.30.21262866v1 then your statement about age groups is false, showing the risk of myocarditis is significantly higher for aged 12-15 boys than covid risk. While the stats you're referring to might include all ages they don't include all health conditions, we know covid mostly affects the elderly and those with comorbidities so the argument that a healthy, young person is better off with the jab vs covid is still far from settled. At the least there is a massive gray area until further data comes out, so people should be informed of stories like Kyles and be allowed to choose for themselves.
  • 14 13
@nurseben: “you can choose to skip the vaccine and take your chances”. what chances? Can you tell me what are the chances of dying from COVID under the age of 40?
If you take Italy for example, of the130k people who (supposedly) died from COVID in almost 2 years, only 399 were less than 40 years old, half of which had severe pre existing conditions.
Yeah, I guess I’ll take my chances
  • 8 8
@ghirox85: "of the130k people who (supposedly) died from COVID in almost 2 years, only 399 were less than 40 years old, half of which had severe pre existing conditions."

That's a very specific claim. Do you have a link to a source for this claim and where the data has been gathered? There have been 142K Covid deaths in the UK alone. 5m deaths globally.
  • 14 13
@jclnv: I'd say the same about the antivaxxers, that's a cult. Going along with prevailing medical advice is less of a cult and more how the human race has survived. You'll get the occasional pro-vaccination idiot, sure. But every antivaxxer is an idiot.
  • 6 1
@rbeach: I was waiting for that.
Here it is:
www.epicentro.iss.it/en/coronavirus/sars-cov-2-analysis-of-deaths

By the way, ISS is to Italy what the NIH is to the US.
And yes, 5 million deaths worldwide in almost 2 years. To give a proportion, consider that approximately 18 million people die each year of cardiovascular diseases.

@rbeach: “every anti-vaxxer is an idiot”
Quite a broad, generalized statement there. Most people I know who get labeled as anti-vaxxers are simply advocating for freedom of choice or are simply against these particular vaccines (2 of which aren’t even technically vaccines, are they?), for a number of reasons

  • 9 4
@rbeach: Possibly, although I’ve never said that people who have taken this vaccine are going to die in some weird, vindictive way.

Also the medical advice from the governments and their ‘science’ is to get vaccinated after you’ve recovered from the virus which is going against the actual prevailing medical advice. Same goes for vaccinating children. As you know the government went against the prevailing science in recommending that. Tthose two things alone should make people question the narrative.
  • 3 1
@jclnv: As I said, you do get occasional idiots.

Not true regarding the advice. Maybe in some places (not that I've seen), but in the UK advice is for everyone to get vaccinated.
  • 13 14
@ghirox85: If you were waiting to do a "gotcha" why didn't you just present your evidence to begin with? And I see your stat was for Italy only.

Ah so because more people die of something else, covid doesn't matter? Got it.

No, it's not a personal choice, it's a public health issue, so with all due respect f*ck your personal choice. If idiots like anti-vaxxers had their way many millions would also have died of smallpox, measles and other diseases (although the latter is seeing a resurgence thanks to antivax idiots).

All antivaxxers are idiots. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that.
  • 6 5
@rbeach: Actually the science in the UK was against the ‘vaccines’ for 12-15 year olds.

@rbeach: Your argument that it is a public health issue if this therapeutic injections, sorry vaccines, worked like actual vaccines. They don’t and that’s why the definition of vaccine had to be amended.

@rbeach: I’m sorry if you felt deceived by me not sharing my sources, bro.
In any case, you asked for proof to substantiate my claims and I gave it.
Now would you please do the same and explain why having an experimental drug injected into your body is not a matter of personal choice but, as you say, a public health issue?
Is there data showing that vaccinated people do not transmit the infection to others?
Moreover, was there ever a time in recent history when “millions of people” died of measles?
  • 3 0
@brentwhipple: Thanks for sharing that study. While interesting, and certainly raises valid questions, it looks like the study is too flawed to draw any conclusions with certainty from it. It's not yet peer-reviewed (says in the top) and if you read the 100+ comments section, that study is getting pretty lit up for having numerous flaws and assumptions. But, the question you are getting at, if that age group of males has a greater risk from the vaccine than from COVID, is an important one, and should be investigated. But I don't think the study you link is very conclusive about that question.
  • 6 4
The issue is the ‘vaccine’ trials were were not very thorough. They didn’t need to be as they knew the EUA would be granted. Neither reproductive toxicity nor genotoxicity (DNA mutation) studies were performed, both of which are considered critical when developing a new drug or vaccine for human use.

The result of that is that we failed to realize the spike protein itself is cytotoxic.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34696485
  • 4 2
@GotchaJimmy: Not an anti vax retard, but statistically, the vaccine is equally if not more risky for his age group than the disease.
There are legitimate concerns around the covid vaccines, no matter what the people on your television tells you.
I took both pfizer and moderna, and luckily only got extremely sick for a week (41 C/106 F fever), but with no lasting negative effects.
Now some countries are banning moderna for young people, and the astra zeneca is already banned most places.
Don't fall for propaganda, make informed decisions.
We had a lot of infections here, and there were quite a few people my age that got severe health issues after recovering from covid, so I assessed the risk for me personally, and decided to get the jab, I probably wouldn't if I got the offer this late.

Edit: most countries had new all time record lows for death rates during this pandemic, was it really bad enough to force experimental drugs on people?
This vaccines didn't see clinical trials that are normally required for all vaccines, due to how "severe the pandemic was".

  • 5 1
@rbeach: I'm 100% confident that Semenuks bike handling skills are good enough to get him a WC qualification, if he put in an off season of prep he can easily do it. He can corner a bike, deal with high speeds, G outs, braking and the mental side of it better than most WC racers can. There are a ton of riders that qualify who aren't even remotely close to Brandon's ability on a bike. His work ethic is higher than 90% of the world cup field, he also has a brain that's already programmed to succeed.

It's not like DH racing is the same as ski racing or F1 where it takes 1000s of hours getting your edges in on ice or whatever they do to make them good.

Everyone thought the same thing about Candide before he won a free rider world tour.

  • 17 0
It's not even close to the level of WRC, and also it's not even sanctioned by the FIA as a national championship unless I'm mistaken. It would be like comparing the "pro" class of your local DH series to the World Cup. There's only one factory team (Subaru) so there are basically three people who have a chance at winning. It's basically Subaru's marketing program and a hobby for people who love to drive. That isn't to say that Semenuk, Pastrana, etc are not very talented though
  • 9 0
Ken Block tried the WRC in the past and struggled a lot to keep the car straight and avoid drifting.
Roads in Europe are not wide as we can see there in Oregon, and have sharp corners with a lot of grips variation.
So we are not speaking about the same type of sport.
Cars are not the same, much smaller, lighter and Acceleration vs Power to Weight Ratio is huge.
Every rally is different, every tarmac streets are different, every gravel in the WRC runs are different. This is why the WRC pilots are in my opinion the BEST in the world
Something similar to Oregon's stages could be Finland www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu8SBZrdoRA
The trickiest stages in the WRC season could be Monte-Carlo www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvCRkf8r6Yg
Roughest stages Turkey, Greece, Argentina, Mexico www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkdkKyAB_CU
So I can say that the North Am pro rally league is not to be compared to the WRC

But saying that is also making us arrogant , that's why it would be interesting to compare the performances btw continents
