Bike Check: Jack Moir's Canyon Strive - EWS Pietra Ligure 2020

Sep 19, 2020
by Ed Spratt

This year saw a big direction change for Jack Moir as the Australian rider left the Intense Downhill team and move to the newly formed Canyon Collective with a new focus on the EWS. Jack's first outing in Zermatt was a great success with a fourth-place after the shortened day of two stages. With the EWS at Pietra Ligure this weekend we caught up with the fresh enduro racer for his setup quirks.

For 2020 Jack is racing the EWS onboard a Canyon Strive, with 150mm rear travel and a 180mm RockShox Zeb fork.

The Strive's ShapeShifter system allows the travel to be dropped down to 135mm from 150mm, which comes in handy on the transfers between stages.

Jack has always run a generous number of spacers and high rise bars, and that trend continues on his Strive.

 So we got a 180mm fork instead of 170, a 15mm spacer UNDER the head tube, a pretty generous stack of spacers under the stem and high rise bars. That front end must higher than me on April 20th

 Because April 20th is your birthday or someone else's?

 That seat tube angle must be pretty slack too. Grim Donut wouldn’t approve!

 Higher stack height is more DH-ish and Enduro-Bro.

 @Muckal: mate brilliant, most German comment ever in the best way.

 Jack is tall. I am also tall but not as tall as him. I would love to have an uncut steerer on my bike and maybe even a spacer to raise the bars. Bike manucaturers dont cater for tall people properly. My saddle to bar height difference is exteme thanks to a too short head tube and cut down steerer on my XL frame.

 @harvinson: Muckal knows, I think you might need to look up famous Germans birthdays.
  • 2 3
 I'd like to challenge you in April, on the 20th, sir.

 @Muckal: 420...pleazeeee
  • 5 0
 @Bob-Agg: he's working at very deep levels of humour there. I'm impressed.
  • 2 0
 @Muckal: 420 brother 420
  • 10 0
 @Riwajc: i got no idea what 420 is, other than the number after 419. Seems I'm too old for this stuff?
  • 4 1
 @alexhyland: how he knows my grandad's birthday is beyond me
  • 3 0
 @BenPea: no shit, i know 3 people in person and someone else who's birthday is on April 20th.

 @Muckal: you're never too old for a 4:20 wake-up call

 @BenPea: alright, alright, I googled it...can we come back to Nazi birthdays now? Thanks.
  • 4 1
 @Muckal: you calling my grandad a Nazi?

 @Muckal: he sold curtains in Bournemouth
  • 4 0
 @BenPea: no. Someone else.
  • 8 0
 @BenPea: Were these curtains red with a big black & white circle/logo thing in the middle?
  • 7 1
 @Bob-Agg: dunno. I'll call my mum and get back to you. If I don't, it's bad news.

 @headshot: pro taper has a 3” rise handlebar that I’ve been loving. Get that front end up without losing reach to spacers
  • 2 0
 @BamaBiscuits: thanks I'll check it out.

 @BenPea: actual lol

 Mechanic: How high do you need the front end to be?
Jack: Yes
  • 20 0
 Yeaaaaaah
  • 8 2
 High front ends like that feel like shit to me, I really struggle in the corners with them....but WTF do I know, I ain't racin' EWS, but most of the pros do seem to run a reasonably low setup...
  • 7 1
 @RadBartTaylor: not sure if you've noticed but Jack has freakishly short arms
  • 4 2
 @RadBartTaylor: I agree but wtf do we know!!
Also just don’t like Canyons I don’t even know why.
  • 5 3
 Strive owner here, this is a poor pedaling bike without the assistance of further slackening the already way too slack STA, I can’t imagine how big a turd it would be like this.
  • 5 1
 @RadBartTaylor: he's 6 and half feet tall, how about you?
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: 193 cm...
  • 2 0
 @Ryanfitz81: his mates always complaining he can't reach his wallet in his pockets?? Maybe something for WynTV to investigate.
  • 2 0
 @RadBartTaylor: same here. I ran a Spank 50mm rise bar for a few months because it made pedaling so damn comfortable. Then I went back to a 35 rise bar and was instantly cornering harder. Wish I could have the best of both worlds.
  • 2 1
 @won-sean-animal-chin: I like you lol
  • 1 0
 I like a high front end too but hate the look of spacers. That's why I have 3.5 Inch riser dirt jump bars. I can extend the width with lock on grips to 777mm which is enough for me.
  • 2 0
 @SkullsRoad: you obviously need 42,5mm ride bars

 90’s called and wants his seat angle back.

 Your Mum called. She wants me back

 Cayon needs to join the steeper seat tubes party
  • 29 1
 They're too busy building road bikes with oval bb shells
  • 3 0
 Someone putting spacers under the head tube certainly isn`t afraid of slack seat tubes.

 150/180 mm travel, Headset spacer, spacer and a riser bar. I think Jack just wants to make it feel as similar as possible to a DH bike. It worked for Zermatt for sure and I am super excited to see how this setup works over a season and more pedaly stages / races.
  • 10 6
 Zermatt was pedaly af. I was there, racing Big Grin
  • 1 0
 @JohSch: well, so I have to rethink my theory :-) I was just guessing, wasn't there racing so thanks for putting that right. I might still say he wants to make the bike feel as much as a DH bike possible ?
  • 10 0
 Where can I get that headset spacer from? Been looking for ages for one.
  • 6 0
 Reverse Components makes a 10mm, Production Privee a 18mm
  • 9 0
 All the people commenting on the bike set up. How many are 6’4”?
  • 1 0
 I'm 6'3 and ride a size L trail bike. Feels great.
  • 1 0
 Me (+1"). I would prefer a XL but would be totally comfortable on that rig for racing if I had pro level fitness.
  • 5 0
 Could anybody enlighten me about this under headset spacer? All frames and forks I have came across strictly forbade them. So how is this that he is running one? And does it turn? Or does it press into the frame and have the bottom bearing under it? Is it glued in? THX
  • 1 0
 it's just a bottom headset cup that's a solid 15mm thick alu piece all the way to the bearing. a few brands make them including fsa of course
  • 7 0
 I hope Jack shreds it hard in ews. It's a shame what happened with his wc dh career, I hope he really shows the dh teams what they're missing out on.
  • 5 0
 Strange that Jack, at 6'4", opted for a size L over an XL. Will be interesting to see how his enduro campaign gets on after a hot start!
  • 2 0
 I'm guessing it's the combination of slack STA and his long legs
  • 3 0
 Always have wondered how tall he actually is given his stratospheric front ends...seen articles list him everywhere from 6' to 6'4" hah
  • 1 3
 But he is on a size L frame, which suggests he isn’t super tall.
  • 13 6
 @Ttimer: suggests that like most enduro pros, he rides a small bike. Big bikes are a dentist trend.
  • 5 0
 Last time I stood next to him, he was my height - 6'4". Troy Lee parking lot party in Laguna, back in the day when we could have social gatherings. Intense Factory riders pre-Gwin.
  • 7 1
 @herzalot:

He’s taller now
  • 3 0
 Am I mistaken or does that look like a mullet?
Why is there no mention of this?
  • 6 0
 It's not a mullet - that's a 29 x 2.4" tire on the back.

 @Caddz, it's just the angle the photo was taken at.

 @mikekazimer: makes sense! Thanks Mike
  • 7 0
 @Caddz: it's a shapeshifting micromullet with enhanced A-C
  • 1 2
 Would make sense to lower the BB. Big fork and spacer doesn't only affect badly the STA.
  • 4 1
 Jack seems to be very tall. And bike size L only, not XL?
It is funny how pro racers like to be conservative.
  • 5 0
 He’s always been on a short bike for his size. He probably prefers flickability in a bike instead of stability and that seems to be working for him.
  • 4 1
 @isuckatridingbutmybikeiscool:
Thank you. This is spot on.

Jack is a tall and lanky dude at well over 6’ but his skills don’t need a super long Enduro Bro bike to get him down the hills at podium level speeds.
  • 3 1
 Seat tube angle is pretty slack. He might be too stretched out on the XL with the seat raised up for pedaling.
  • 4 0
 So many comment nerds. Yeah nah Moir!!!!! Tear it up next season mate!
  • 1 0
 Do i see a mullet? If so, that justifies that turd of hockey puck he put under the frame to get that bb back to where it belongs..
  • 3 0
 Wheelie machine
  • 4 2
 @eugenux back in your hole troll...
  • 1 0
 Hes gonna win an EWS soon for sure. He is visibly faster and smoother than 95% of the field
  • 1 0
 Why isn’t he on an xl frame?
  • 4 2
 Because most pros ride small bikes
  • 2 0
 @Linc: Meanwhile 5'10 Aaron Gwin experiments with riding an XL and Greg Minaar who is close to Jacks height rides the biggest bike Santa Cruz make, then gets custom parts to make it bigger. Pro's like Joe's have different styles and preferences, different strokes for different folks.
  • 1 0
 @catweasel: It’s almost as if downhill courses are different to enduro
  • 1 0
 @Linc: ah didn't realize we were only taking enduro pros.. So what your saying is the relative size of the bike is somewhat dependant on the style of the tracks? EWS slower, tighter DH faster, more open
  • 1 1
 between all the spacers and longer a-c fork, the reach (on already a small bike) have been reduced by around 20mm. yikes.
  • 1 0
 Rockshox introduces their new 250 mm seatpost for the Shark Attack.
  • 1 0
 I like it
  • 1 0
 Yeaaahh!
  • 1 3
 So in the climb setting, it's 135mm of super firm suspension in the rear, paired to a 180mm fork. That must feel weird as hell...
  • 16 1
 I don't know, how weird does it feel to climb with a hardtail?
  • 1 0
 Well it was fast!
