Anita Gehrig is running a very similar setup on her size large Norco Range as she was last season. A DT Swiss fork up front(65psi and two tokens) and a Rockshox Super Deluxe (140psi, three tokens) provide the suspension.

Going race to race she is hoping to keep the setup pretty consistent and doesn't think that she will do much to change the bike between races. Anita is comfortable on the current setup so will keep it this way for the rest of the season.

Pedro Burns is coming into the EWS series with a win at the Andes Pacifico indicating he is more than ready for a season of racing at the highest level. His bike stays pretty much the same from the multi-day race in Chile. His 19.5" Trek Slash frame is supported by a Rockshox Lyrik Ultimate (90psi) and a Rockshox Super Deluxe shock (178psi).

After finishing second in the overall last year Isabeau Courdurier will be looking to improve on that this year with 2018 series winner Cecile Ravanel out of the first few rounds because of injury. Her size small Intense Tracer is running the Rockshox Lyrik Ultimate up front (56psi) and a Rockshox Super Deluxe out back (100psi with faster rebound)

 Not an uncommon sight on the bikes of people in the know. Trek got into Penskey Reaktiv stuff only because they could then claim in their ads that they have F1 technology in their bikes (as if Penskey was killing it in F1) It was nothing more than polishing the turd. Congratulations Rockshox, you are finally getting there in the rear shock game, now only 3 years behind Fox and 7 years behind Cane Creek, with other like Öhlins or EXT leaning against the wall and yawning. Unless... Metric was your market leading innovation. Anyhoo waiting for your ultimate solution Big Grin

 @WAKIdesigns: Well guess what? You can run a fox, Cane Creek, or an Ohlins on a Trek if you want to. I happen to have one of those "polished turd" rockshox shocks on two of my remedies and have never had a problem with them even when racing.

And how did you work out that Cane Creek are years ahead of rockshox and fox anyway? Their air shocks explode as soon as you sit on the bike.

 That's the same bolt/spacer setup that Trek used on this bike before they went trunnion/thru-shaft. The rocker link is unchanged.

 @thenotoriousmic: World Cups were won on Schwalbe Magic Marys in the dry, not to mention without a chain. I was using Fox DHX 5.0 for 5 years with no issue. Some people did it with Fox Van. Some didn't complete a single ride with CC inline. Yes. I have to back off a little. it's not a turd. It's a good product. Just not as good for the amount of marketing. Didn't mean to insult anyone for the shock they are runing, I obviously did. I wanted to pick on RS. Now... Move on.

 @AD4M: Did Cane Creek have beyond those with the Inline? I'm not aware of the DB Air having more issues than any other brand shock (eg RS Monarch had its fair share)? The inline was a highly precise shock that basically required aerospace level assembly, which they fell short of on. As far as I can tell that was fixed on the second iteration.

Cane Creek came out with the Double Barrel coil in 2006. They were way ahead of the curve, and it definitely took RS and Fox time to catch up.

 @FrozenTreads56: Yes Float. Then adopted into Monarch. Both being advanced shock pumps when speaking of longer travel bikes. CCDB was ahead of everybody, took Fox some time to get into same zone with X2, DHX2. Now Push 11-6, EXT, Öhlins TTX (not STX fail). Now Fox moved away from bladders in forks keeping the performance. Time for Lyrik Ultimate Super Deluxe Mega Plus R2C2 C3PO. Metric shock standard is the biggest innovation RS brought to the table. Or maybe not Smile

 @privateer-wbc: You are correct, every brand of shock has problems of some extent, but I did specifically mention it was the Cane Creek air shocks, not the coils, that had issues.

But it is worth noting that rockshox and fox manufacture a huge amount of shocks compared to CC so that also has to be taken into account in terms of issues and the percentage of failed shocks from Fox and Rockshox will likely be smaller compared to CC as a result.

But I digress, Cane Creek do make some great products at the moment (especially their coil stuff) but are they 7 years ahead of rockshox? No

The Double Barrel was an impressive leap forward. The shock, both air and coil, is still relevant 12 years after the debut of the CCDB coil.

What I meant by my original comment was that Cane Creek are not ahead of the competition in that the double barrel technology is used by fox as well in the dhx2 and x2 shocks and is alos used by Ohlins. Although rockshox don't have twin tube dampers, their super deluxe shocks are solid shocks even if they lack on the adjustability front.

 @AD4M: No, they aren't miles ahead today in terms of technology and out of the box performance - meaning not option for a custom tune. Seems to be a pretty even playing field, now. And I don't think having twin tube has to be the be all end all - there is a hundred ways to skin a cat. But, the Double Barrel Coil came out in 2006. Air took a bit longer to develop, sure. But in 2006, they were WAY ahead of the curve.

Fox came to the table with the DHX2 and X2 in what, 2015? Before that, I don't believe they were on par with an out of the box shock. That took them 9 years.

Ohlins designed the Double Barrel, so they should be in the same league/using the same tech.

Rock Shox I am unsure of. I don't believe they were there with Vivid/Monarch. Maybe with the Deluxe you are right - and especially with a custom tune - probably better than a CCDB. But it took them what, 10 or 11 years?

I think that is what Waki is getting at.

 @privateer-wbc: I reserve my judgment until I ride the Deluxe, God knows how many names it has. That 2019 thing that is not a vivid but has a reservoir... but the biggest value of CCDB Coil is the speed sensitivity. Haven’t ridden anything that can have LSC turned up to 70% and it will still open on any bigger sauaare edge hit. The rebound on tha thing is magic too. Then you can just buy it and it will work on any bike you have. And it costs as much as this. What was the name again...

 @AD4M: The vivid has a twin tube damper with only one small poppet valve for hsr fine tuning, but it mainly works as a classic damper.

 @bohns1: lucky you. I've warrantied 3 last gen for creaking uppers, 1 new gen for a leaky damper. And they need bleeding too frequently for my liking.

 This shock that shock - everyone's missing the real story. It's that Keith Bontrager Bat Cage! Forever and always the cheapest and most indestructible means of carrying a water bottle on a bike.

 @privateer-wbc: intense dh rigs. Hsc, lsc spun infinitely, shock couldn’t be adjusted properly, just a spongy pig. Called cane creek and no help at all. I’ll never ride cane creek shocks again. Fox and RS are so much better.

 @AD4M: Had a CC Inline on my 1st gen scout for the entire time I had it, was nothing but gold... Sold it with the bike at the end of the 2017 season. Still miss it, so maybe my experience is an outlier on the graph, or just yours? t seems the OEM releases were where the issue was at from what I've looked into.

 @RideTahoe707: Heard some issues on the OEM spec'd CC inlines but not so much aftermarket. THat's usually how ti goes. Huge rushed orders from OEMs always cause failures. It's why Specialized bikes always get bad brakes, shocks, etc but AM ones are good. I just purchased a new DB CS coil. Several buddies have been beating the hell out of the new models and they seem to hold up much better. I'll see how it goes.
My DHX2 lasted about 4 months before the main shaft seal started leaking. So she goes. The whole sealhead replacement was only $50 plus the service.

 @nocker: that's odd. Neither should turn infinitely, but I know it happens if you force it past the (no so) hard stop. Sorry to hear you got bad service - that's been the opposite of my experience.

I have owned 4 CCDB coil, 1 CCDB air, 1 CCDB inline. All have been fantastic, even the original inline! None have spun infinitely, and all have functioned very well and allowed a better ride than whatever it replaced (DHX coil or air, Monarch, Float etc).

The only issue I did have was one of the shafts had a small nick/void in it from production. It was small, and didn't seem to leak oil at any rate, but CC took it back at the end of the season and did a replacement and service for me, for free.

Again, your experience sounds like it sucked, but it also sounds like an outlier to me - both the service and the operation of the shock - at least from my experience. I have been dealing with CC directly on and off since 2006 when I bought the original CCDB for the g1 Nomad.

 @WAKIdesigns: metric shock spacing can’t possibly be an innovation. It’s just another standard because rockshox engineers can’t figure out how to make a good product within the current constraints. Plus, they probably wanted to make more money from their absurd number of marketing claims than they already do

 @AD4M: Yup, the reaktiv shock on my old fuel ex was great - the valve worked fine, and made sense for the abp linkage design. EWS racers choosing a piggy back shock makes sense, too. There's rumors that RS will be putting reaktiv in to several shock in the coming years.

 @privateer-wbc: wow.. I had the creaking.. Remedied it myself with a home service.. I found there was little to no grease in the air shaft area.. Also not the correct amount of oil.. Thing has been flawless since.. An avalanche damper takes it to the next level.

 @bohns1: if you look at after market prices and compare production volumes, you may be surprised. On TFTuned CCDB costs 550£, Float 509£! Float X2 699!, RS Super Deluxe 509£?

I run Lyrik myself, reason? Price. Fox refused to sell OEMs to big online stores (dunno why) and RS is happy to do so. Looking at my Lyrik and some stuff I see in workshops, I would not buy a used long travel fork from RS, older than 2 years. And I advise everyone to ask for a pic of upper legs slid out of lowers before they buy. Fox? Next year I will be waiting for a used 36 Grip 2 to pop up on classifieds. No worries there

 @jflb: I would say you couldn't be further from the truth. I've been riding bicycles long enough to know what I want from them. If I can't get that from a certain product, then I'll go to something I know worked for me in the past. If I just wanted to spend big money for something fancy and then talk garbage, I would buy a Push coil. I actually had given this some though recently, because the DB coil on my riot isn't quite a perfect match for that bike in particular, but I am going to spend a little more time tuning before I dive into something more expensive. The Riot's leverage curve skews slightly to being better suited to an air as it isn't really all that progressive, but the rear end has a little too much flex and all the side loading and torqueing around on the original DVO Topaz had it sucking air into the damper oil. Needed to be reblead after every 2-3 rides.

My first couple of Cane Creek shocks were dyno'ed at CC and came with the test sheets. What was pretty neat - an no, you don't get that any longer with the numbers they do now. But They are still pretty fine shocks in my experience.

 @bohns1: The creaking I have had has been in the CSU. Usually as a result of compromised crown and stanchion joints. No amount of home service can really fix this. Rock Shox doesn't even fix it, they replace the unit. some say it can be fixed however, if you press the stanchions out of the crown and then press them back in with proper press fit locking compounds.

 @WAKIdesigns: I bought new pike.. Serviced it myself out the box.. Air shaft and inner stanchions had near no grease and the amount of oil was not correct.. That alone made a huge difference.. Avalanche damper takes it to next level

Low or no oil can be an issue. I had my Pike's warrantied here in Canada at Live to Play (Norco) and they came back with zero bath oil. Pretty garbage service.

Avalanche is great. You could custom tune your Charger and get same performance I have no doubt, Avalanche isn't going to get you leaps and bounds improvement in performance over that (much cheaper) option.

The issue I found was that, at least the old charger, did not remain consistent over a long period of time. Ride it hard and it performance would decline, and it would need a bleed. The Avalanche cartridge doesn't need as much attention - performance doesn't deteriorate - the design of the open bath cart is much more reliable.

 @privateer-wbc: most people who whined on RS forks were those who wouldn't service it out of the box. Which is a procedure for every single fork out there, why would you take chances? Offcourse you can send a CC Helm or Formula on warranty and experience wonderful customer service. Just why... they saved 30 min - 1h own work or 50$, but guess what - muppets don't have a fork in their bike!

 @WAKIdesigns: totally. I do what I can to avoid having to send my fork anywhere, as well as having to minimize maintenance as much as possible. That includes doing my own lower leg, air can, and damper service.

Removing lower legs, greasing seals and filling with proper bath oil volumes is cheap and quick after you have done it just once. RS Pike lower leg service is a 10 minute job.

What pains me, is the creaking CSU's and aerated damper/bladder in the old pike. Is the new Charger any better?

If I wanted to spend less, I would buy a mildly used Yari (less creaking) and dump an Avy damper in it. I think that would be pretty sensible and very low maintenance.

 It's pretty random unless we know there's something we want get. Whatever we see while we're walking around and are able to get photos of amidst everything else happening. It's usually something like, "Oh look, there's (insert random rider here). Hey (random rider) want to do a bike check real fast before you go to (insert practice, home, pits, to race here)?"...don't look too far into it. There's really zero method or reason to it and if we see something extra cool we try to get that as well.

 @jaame: Haven't tested that, so can't confirm. Depending on the size I guess it could be really plush, but only for one compression. And some cleaning will probably be needed afterwards.

Monarch, on the other hand, is not as bad, but way behind something like X2 or CC.

 Pedro has to be running 3 x 10mm stem spacers, not 3 x 5mm stem spacers based on stem stack height. That's a shit load.

 The original design was made for Lew Buchanan last year when he raced for trek and then trek gave em to the rest of the racers last year and this year. Unfortunately at this time not something you can buy through Trek.

 @apartmentwhale: I ride a slash and the knock block doesn’t bother me at all. I actually kind of like the fact my bars won’t spin into my frame on a crash. I don’t know why trek gets so much hate with it. Usually by people that have never ridden one.

 @apartmentwhale: knock block is no issue if anything it’s a bonus, only once a issue turning bike inside out on a super tight turn uphill. That’s once in over 3years Ive turned and reached the knock block limit.

 G5 front and DHR2 rear. My OCD is barely reacting for some reason Smile

 That G5 is a great tire front or rear. It has won its fair share of World cup DH races. Its just not the best available for rear braking which was crucial for the antigrip stuff in Chile

 @vanillarice19: Depends what you are comparing it to. It is better at braking than DHF and MMary. Perhaps Highroller brakes better, the problem is that the ramped knobs wear out very quickly and becomes a semi-slick. DHR1 was an absolute anchor but this is where it’s merits end. The problem with G5 pattern which is very similar to DHR2 is that it rolls really badly
