BC Parks Closes All Provincial Parks Due to Covid-19

Parks Canada recently closed all their parks and now BC Parks announced today that they have closed all provincial parks in response to the call for increased action to address COVID-19.

Federal and provincial directives have asked people to stay close to home to reduce COVID-19 transmission risk, but since some continue to ignore the order, they say was a necessary measure.

bigquotesBecause physical distancing works, it is critical that we take every action needed to restrict the spread of COVID-19. This applies to British Columbians and out-of-province visitors who were planning to visit or stay at our provincial parks. The message is clear: stay home, avoid travel, do not put yourself or others at risk.

“I understand and share the love people in British Columbia have for the outdoors and the connection between health and proximity to nature. We tried to provide safe space for people to get some exercise and fresh air in our beautiful parks. But it has proven too challenging to maintain safe distance between visitors. This action is difficult but necessary. We look forward to the day we can welcome people back to our wonderful parks.
George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy

The timing of this decision is important given the upcoming Easter long weekend and what is usually the beginning of the busy season for outdoor recreation and camping.

BC Parks is also extending the ban on all camping in provincial parks until May 31, 2020. The Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development has also closed its campgrounds and amenities in response to the COVID-19 situation.

The full closure order can be found here. Any change to provincial park access or services will be posted to the BC Parks website.

Damn, I guess I'll just go grocery shopping with 200 other people to stay safe instead of hiking by myself

@cyberoptixs: It's only truth because because some people are incapable of making smart decisions, so while grocery shops remain open out of necessity, the government is reducing risk wherever it can.

@kookseverywhere You should see the trails on the North Shore...

hiking trail entrances are the busiest i have ever seen them in north van. the lineup to climb up to lower espresso goes all the way down to the road sometimes.

the fact that there is a lineup at all is insanity, this needed to happen. you can still go for a hike, and if you get caught then you deserve it because it wasnt remote enough Smile

@nateisgrate: This has got nothing to do with race and everything to do with having 2.5 million PEOPLE 45 minutes away. But if you want to point a finger, as someone riding by myself in Squamish every day it looks like a pretty white problem to me (coming from a white guy).

No, you'll stay home by yourself. You're not asked to trade biking for shopping, you're asked to trade non-essential stuff for staying home. You would have gone grocery shopping anyways at some point but you're also suppose to minimize that. Food is essential. Biking is not. Stay home folks, it's not complicated, stop looking for loopholes.

Ignorant. At the end of the day, many trails near me are closed. Many of us are still riding them daily. Then, retards like to go out and "Catch" people, take photos and put them on Facebook....let there be no question, there will be MANY altercations, physical and verbal (yet another reason Facebook is idiotic). I do hope someone sprays the Photogs with Bear Spray...once this is over, I know a few people who are simply never welcome to ride on my wheel again....that is what this shit causes.

Oh, and people need to mind their own damn business.

So you weren’t going to the grocery store while the parks were open? Logic doesn’t quite make sense...You will be going to the grocery store regardless. This is one less place to contract or spread the virus.

@johnthewolf: "stuff for staying home" that is all well and good, but for the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights that allows me FREE TRAVEL - period. Cops never met a right they did not want to trample, however . But, even the local Sheriff said they will NOT enforce any ban of any bikes on any trail. Plus if I want to make out with a stranger on the trail, that is up to us.I do understand Tinder is ROCKIN.
  • 27 7
@RoadStain: Nobody wants to trample your constitutional rights. Nobody wants this happening right now, including cops and the government. Of course the bad politicians and cops will take advantage of the situation for personal gain, but when will they not?
Staying home right now and deciding not to use your right to free travel (unless necessary) is a “personal responsibility” thing that so many like to preach about. It’s patriotism.

I live on the shore and there are still a lot of cars coming over second narrows bridge with bikes on racks and trail heads are packed. Explore your neighborhood trails and make smart decisions out there. We only get one chance to get this right, and what we are doing in BC right now appears to be working. The goal is not to take away our access over the long term, it is to not overload the healthcare system in the short term. If we can all make sacrifice now, we may all get through this better on the back end.

@robwhynot: The odd thing, less than .00001% (estimate) are in "research" as opposed to educated experiments based on clinical experience. "Research" that I trust is going to come from CDC and accredited places (military, big pharma). As you know, most often researchers find exactly what it is they are looking for, more so in an academic environment were it seems there simply can not be a political or socialist undertone to the results that tend to be found.

The fact is, while "humanity" has a large bearing on the individual scientist's goals, that scientist needs to be paid based on performance (as in, a tangible result) and at the end of the day a fiduciary motive to thus continue research into other bugaboo's we as humans contend with day to day.

If your family and their peers are low-level staff and NOT working in Pulm, simply their opinions are NOT at all valid for the situation at hand. In general, the mass majority of cases walking into the ED are first off missing the "E" aspect of ED, this has only been made far worse since the disaster that is Obama. From there, treating every hypochondriac with a sniffle makes it all that much worse.

I work directly with Infectious Disease as well as Pulm (who in recent decades mostly figure out why smokers cough and fat people snore). If protecting society and mankind on a whole is the goal (globally)...we need to first ban the sun (skin cancer), smoking, drinking, drugs, fatty foods............but, no matter waht. We are all mortal.

GIve your heads a shake. The closure was done to prevent people from travelling over the long weekend. When people travel to the parks, they stop at gas stations, take-out stands, and often carpool. More importantly, they move across different areas and increase the risk of transmission from location to location ---- introducing potential for spread of illness between communities. This has less to do with our own selfish petty needs, and more to do with a the higher level work of epidemiologists to save lives. Get perspective.
  • 4 6

When this is all said and done I truly believe that the negative effects of the resulting recession will be far greater than the negative effects of the virus. We are already seeing domestic abuse increasing (by 40% in some places), suicide rates are increasing and will only get worse as this goes on, and average life span of an entire generation will be reduced by 1-2 years.
You can respect that the virus is a real and dangerous thing, and also be skeptical of the government (no one should think ever that the gov has their best interest in mind) while be resistant to handing over individual rights that you may never get back if you give them up now (how many times have you heard "the new normal" from the gov instead of the "temporary" we heard two weeks ago?).
If someone feels they are at risk from the virus because of an underlying health issue, they should stay home and receive benefits from a "stimulus" package. If someone feels they are healthy enough to fight off the virus (as most people are, with minimal symptoms) then they can go outside, go to work, keep the economy moving, and do whatever they want. Everyone should have the individual responsibility and freedom to make that decision for themselves without the gov telling them what to do.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that no one should just follow government orders blindly. Everyone should be questioning their gov and inserting some critical thinking and common sense.

It’s really simple-ride where you live, keep your distance or ride solo, be extra careful to give dog walkers and hikers their distance and for f*cks sake don’t hang out in the parking lot for beers after riding. We have it really good in BC right now, if people act like idiots and a bunch of nervous nellies complain to the powers that be we will all be lucky to be road riding for the summer.

It just takes a few shitheads right now to make the next few months a whole lot less tolerable.
  • 8 1
Yep not surprising that BCparks is taking this step, still seeing Bro-downs in the parking lot post ride as of last night! I’ve never been a huge social rider, and can’t understand why we couldn’t do our best to give each other space on the trail right now. And your right we will be LUCKY if we are aloud to ride road, fortunately in BC there’s a lot of trails outside of parks and a lot of ways to get away from people. (Outside the lower mainland)

Our public lands in Washington are all closed now because land managers saw ongoing irresponsible behavior. Sucks.
  • 6 0
I’ve been out a few times and have only seen good behaviour. I fear that car counts are being used as a metric for lack of physical distancing. There is tons of space out there, and people are being good.

Squamish trails ARE the local trails for people in Vancouver. Sea to sky residents have it really good right now, but the millions of people in Vancouver are being told they can't go to the places they'd usually get exercise. There is literally nowhere in the city of Vancouver to ride a mountain bike. To all those in the sea to sky blaming people from the city, put yourself in their shoes. This is their backyard too, and you usually benefit from that.
  • 4 0
@skylerd: if you live in Vancouver, Squamish is NOT your backyard.

The more people move around, the more things spread. It’s as simple as that. I understand the need to get outside, and I think driving to the Shore could be justifiable (FYI trail are still open, but with DNV parking restrictions to spread people out). But driving up to Squamish right now seems frivolous, and a parade of cars driving up the Sea to Sky on a sunny weekend is the crap that gets mountain bikers on the news, not good for anyone.

Now is the time to be low-key.
  • 2 0
@DMal: no, the more people interact, the more things spread. It's simple as that.

Having everyone go to the same places is a problem.
  • 2 0
@skylard you chose to live in the city, don’t be selfish right now and wreck it for everyone. If you really have to ride go at 7:30 am and be done by 10 when no one is out. Or get lights and ride at night. If people jam up the trails and parking lots this weekend or someone gets hurt bad we are all screwed.
  • 2 1
@sitkadog: I think we totally agree on how people should be recreating right now.

My issue is with the righteous localism spewing out of the S2S. The S2S is what it is because of its proximity to Vancouver. If it wasn't, why didn't you move to Lillooet or Kaslo or Terrace or Cumberland instead? Closing parks seems to have originated from complaints by "locals" who feel possessive of public spaces, and feel they should be able to exclude "those other people". If we're all in this together, why are some people expected to bear more of the burden?
  • 1 0
@skylerd: I don’t disagree, but the issue is that optics matter at the moment. There are many ‘concerned citizens’ out there who would like to see us all locked in our homes. The fact that some trails and parking areas are closed but not others doesn’t help; now we’re parking in neighbourhoods, in front of those concerned citizens’ houses.

Unfortunately, we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard or I fear we risk losing it all. And if we can’t even ride on the Shore over the next few months, I’m going to go pretty crazy.
  • 1 1
@sitkadog: I still do not understand how a potential orthopedic injury at all alters the schedule of the pulmonologits who also are not all that busy....they going to have the carpenters working on the AC all of a sudden?
  • 2 0
@skylerd this has nothing to do with localism, it has to do with everyone doing their part to keep the trails open. Are you willing to trade a busy ride on a long weekend for 3 months of road riding?? I chose to live close to a relatively large trail system that I can ride to from my house. I’m not riding there this weekend or at any peak times during the week and when I do I’m taking the long way to get there to avoid people in general. Takes a whole extra 5 minutes... If people from the city have to ride I can understand that, but be smart about it, it’s not that hard. Now’s not the time for people to be driving to small towns for a multitude of reasons, same reason I’m not heading to Costco in the city to buy all the shit tickets. Do something else this weekend. Go ride as close to home as possible early in the morning during the week when no one is out, or ride at night, the full moon has been sick the last few nights.
  • 3 0
@RoadStain: it has to do with the fact that local SAR has made it abundantly clear that they don’t want to rescue anyone right now out of risk for infection to their members. It also has to do with the knee jerk reactions of the powers that be if someone gets wrecked, it makes it into the news and they feel like they have to do something... the simple solution is don’t be selfish and think about the affect your actions will have on others. Someone breaking their leg won’t overwhelm the healthcare system, but it sure might alter a whole lot of people’s recreation opportunities.
  • 1 0
It’s funny how people think that riding is their only outlet. And they must do it or they will die. There are a lot of other things you can do you know.
  • 2 1
@skylerd: People in Squamish are not shopping in Vancouver. Works both ways. This narcissistic entitlement attitude that people have towards gratifying themselves with recreation could result not only many deaths, but also prolonged closures, stricter authoritarian measures because of the few that can't respect others, and a lasting negative stain on all of biking because of the selfish minority that place their ride thrill above societal good.
  • 16 1
What ever is suggested or enforched I will comply with no complaint s if the sacrifice on my behalf will do in any part reduce how long we have to live in the current state of fear .  @jj12jj: oh I'm trying to practice social distancing on quiet back roads. I keep riding past family s that take up the whole road. I have to choose another street. If your road riding and you pass another person on a bike . That puts both people at risk!!!!!
Passing is unacceptable. When you pass the cyclist you are feeding the rider behind you all your breath. DO NOT PASS people on your bike. Please do not ride on bike paths. If you do then cycling out side will be banned completely.

This is a global traumatic event...

Not sure taking away people’s outlets who may have lost relatives, their job, their business is a particularly great idea. Oh! And everyone had lost their social engagement system as well..

Just doing whatever we're told is the comparison.
If we're honest and critical of what the government is telling us what to do, we should all come to the conclusion that partaking in leisure and recreation in the fresh air of OUR woods, forests, and parks strengthens our immune systems. The more we stay at home, the weaker we become.
We say it's because we trust the government to tell us what's best for us, but all they're doing is telling us to hide under our beds until the boogeyman goes away. We Are Cowards.

In our area, DNR land is closed, USFS land is closed, State Parks and County Parks are also closed. Even the local ski resorts banned uphill travel. The only places still open are privately owned land parcels and that's close to being shut down because people can't respect what we're all trying to do. There are so many eyes on us right now; be smart. Just like so many others, I want to get off my road bike and ride the trails we've all worked so hard to have. And I wish the remaining few in our area would get on board with the rest of us trying to help us keep what we're so damn fortunate to ride. And I swear when this is over, I'm browning out in a parking lot, post-ride, with all the homies.

Well the Greater Vancouver Region has a population of 2.4 million so if only a small percentage of that decides the want to go out to the now limited areas we have still open it won’t take much to become crowded. So much as we all want to be out riding how about we ask ourselves which situation is worse:
A) We suck it up in the short term and stay off the trails for a month and stay home with everyone else and hopefully in a month when prime riding season is kicking in. Everything will be mostly back to normal and we can full enjoy all our trails with our friends or:
B) We get impatient and continue to overcrowd areas (includes all activities not just biking) and end up still being in this situation all summer or worse, not even being able to ride at all if it gets worse.
  • 8 0

My trails are still open in city and private land, state is closed, and the local trail authorities have explicitly stated not to travel to popular trail head parking lots via car because they are small. Instead to park at locations slightly further away and pedal to the most popular trails..... no ones cares. Normal parking lots are utterly packed. We're talking like 20 extra minutes of pedaling at the most, no ones cares... very strange.

Time to build our own trails

I hate to break the news to ya, but social distancing is here to stay in many parts of the northern hemisphere, probably the majority of it. Sadly, there will be more measures, even more stringent than what we've seen in the past month or so. Brace yourselves.
  • 3 3
Curves are flattening, deaths WAY under even the lowest estimates of models that included social distancing. US gearing up to get things started end of April.

More stringent measures coming? Sounds like you know something nobody else does, care to share a source of information backing your claim?
  • 1 0
@Off-my-lawn-hippie: LOL, yea that source of information is called reality.
  • 1 0
@topbike21: Huh? The country is open, more stringent measures never came, he was clearly wrong. Good luck with whatever “reality” you claim to live in.

Being outdoors, getting sunshine on your skin, exposing your system to the elemnts is good for your immune system. It strengthens you both physically and mentally.

I love living in a world where this comment will literally make (stupid) people mad Smile
  • 2 3
Good plan. As long as people recreate IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY, and avoid traveling and the risks that go with it, AND maintain appropriate distances, then this should be fine.
  • 2 2
@cerealkilla: shut up mom, no one asked you.

This has also happened in Santa Cruz, all state parks, beaches, trails, and public outdoor areas are to be vacated subject to a $1000 fine starting tomorrow until 4/15.

Riding was the only thing I had going...

That could reasonably happen to people that are too daft to protect themselves from this virus. I sincerley hope that doesn't happen.

Overkill. I wonder how much of this is due to complaints from Nimbys?

@onemind123: No, I believe @discoclint is a health expert and perfectly qualified to give his educated opinion on an international health crisis. Right @discoclint? Your credentials give you more credibility than the world's health officials?
  • 2 4
Sorry @YoKev - my communication had covid and incorrectly pointed my comment at you :-(
  • 5 2
@johnthewolf: @johnthewolf: I don't claim to be a health expert but the parks have enough space to maintain social distancing as long as everyone behaves sensibly. I agree with other comments that the bro-fests have to stop in car parks and on the sidewalks, but I've not seen any and I've been riding on my own every second day for 6 weeks. Now you just have everyone funneled into a small number of climb trails making social distancing harder.

...and for the record are you referring to the same experts that kept YVR open to incoming travel from COVID19 hotspots, relying on passenger honesty to admit that they weren't felling well, the whole time that the WHO was trying to explain in January that governments had to take this seriously and that the incubation period without symptoms was on average two weeks? They sure got that one right.

Little to do with Nimbys. It is a strategic choice by Govt to discourage people from travelling during the holiday break, and causing transmission across communities and a new spike in disease transmission. People that only think about their bikes think it is somehow about them. Fact is that there is a bigger picture to this that involves saving tens of thousands of lives.

sorry for the confusion here ,it is a provincial recreation order that says trails are still open. I would post it here but I can't attach the file.

Anyone have clarity on which trails in the lower mainland can still be ridden? My understanding is that Fromme and most of Seymour are not in a provincial park?

Suck it up buttercup - if you are riding or hiking the shore at all your a selfish prick - If you are a sponsored rider and posting it on instagram your a jackass - and you should be chastised so your sponsors see that you are a horrible ambassador. The last thing the Lions Gate Hospital needs is more patients considering BC s biggest problem is a old folks residence 15 blocks away in Lynn Valley/ Fromme trail head. Here in BC we are global and Country wide leaders in flatening the curve . Only 2% increase in the last week in new cases - and more recovered every day - most everywhere else would be so lucky and grateful. Dont f*ck it up in the next few weeks so we can have a late Spring/ Summer of riding and maybe the bike shops and pubs in North Van will survive this hardship and we will drink to them.
  • 4 4
So if people were going into provincial parks and reported cases were not growing exponentially or logarhythmically...then, well it's obvious you care more than others and that makes you a better person (goes without saying) but based on what you've reported, your moral grandstanding may be misplaced.

Rode Sedona last week. All the major trailheads were closed. LEOs parked at the gates. On a good note my 11 year old had to ride Slim Shady for the first time.
