Now Finished: Ask Us Anything with Nino Schurter, Kate Courtney & Maxxis

Apr 16, 2020
by Pinkbike Staff

Update from Maxxis 11am PST: Thanks for joining us. Until next time!

Designed in conjunction with Nino Schurter and Kate Courtney along with the rest of the Scott-SRAM MTB team, Maxxis debuted their new Aspen and Rekon Race tires in a Wide Trail version last week.

We wanted to know more about the new Maxxis tires and then team's input in bringing the new offerings to life, so we thought it would be a perfect opportunity for you to ask Nino Schurter, Kate Courtney and Maxxis your questions.

Get your questions ready for the two World Cup overall champions and Maxxis' Aaron Chamberlain and Andrew Bartek.

1 Courtney Kate Scott-SRAM USA
Overall secured.

Kate Courtney
The 24-year-old American has quickly risen to the top of the sport, taking the UCI cross-country World Championships title in her first year racing elite in 2018, making her the first American to land in that spot in 17 years. In her second year of racing in the elite category, she went on to take the overall 2019 World Cup title. She also qualified for the US Olympic team with her fifth place at the Mont-Sainte-Anne World Championships.

Kate's spirit animal is a shark, she loves tacos, has the best fan Instagram account, and her indoor gym workout game is only rivalled by her teammate Nino.

Nino Schurter brings the gold home for team Swiss.
Another jersey for Nino.

Nino Schurter
Eight World Championship titles. Seven World Cup overall titles. Bronze, silver, and gold Olympic medals. Four National Championships. Thirty-two World Cup wins. And in 2017, he put together the perfect season, winning every World Cup race and the World Champs. Not only that, but the Swiss rider does all the winning while also getting a bit sideways whenever he has the chance. Meanwhile, much of his competition look scared stiff of what their bike is about to do to them. Nino? He usually looks like he's just out there having some fun.

Mike Levy headed to Switzerland last year for this episode of Humbled to "do some intervals with Nino".

Aaron Chamberlain Bicycle Marketing Manager

Aaron Chamberlain, Bicycle Marketing Manager at Maxxis
Aaron has been fortunate to combine his lifelong passion for riding bikes with his background in marketing, leading to a decade working in the industry. He has been mid-pack fodder in nearly every type of bike racing you can imagine, but mostly enjoys riding for fun these days. When he’s not riding or wrenching on bicycles, Aaron is probably riding or wrenching on his KTM after its recent addition to the stable of pedal bikes.

Andrew Bartek Bicycle Sales Manager

Andrew Bartek, Bicycle Sales Manager
Fell back in love with bikes after helping my then girlfriend now wife cleaning out their families garage and finding an old Specialized Hard Rock that her cousin had left there. Steady riding, then trail maintenance, led to pivoting in careers from years in the music industry to bike full time. Chance encounters working in a local bike shop led to working for a bicycle parts wholesaler which then led to a move to Georgia where a sales position opened up at Maxxis. Having been with Maxxis for close to 6 years, 5 of which have been managing the US sales team and contributing to sales, new product, tending to relationships with wholesalers, and NA OEM accounts. Prefers to end the work week with a good bourbon or old fashioned.

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 9:00 AM PDT/5:00 PM BST on April 16th, you can type your questions for Kate Courtney, Nino Schurter, Aaron Chamberlain and Andrew Bartek into the comment box below this article and the guys will have a crack at answering them. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a few minutes while Kate Courtney and Nino Schurter work their way through questions that are popping up. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously.

To make this go as smoothly as possible, try to follow these guidelines:

• Keep your questions relevant
• Stay focused and to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later
• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words
• Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have an issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner
• Use propping to acknowledge good (or not so good) questions and bump them up or down to where they belong
• Please don't "Reply" to other people's questions and try to answer other people's comments. This makes it confusing to follow the thread.

Other time zones:
• 12:00 PM EST (New York)
• 5:00 PM BST (London)
• 6:00 PM CET (Paris)
• 6:00 PM SAST (Cape Town)

Nino: we've seen you absolutely sending it on a xc bike with seat at least 12" above the handlebars. When are you gonna do an EWS race? If Sagan can have a go at xc, it would be great to see your handling skills in a gravity-oriented discipline even if only just once for fun.
  • 3 6
He’s already answered that. When he retires from XC.
  • 8 0
 He did!
EWS Finale Ligure 2013 :-) Nino was fast but he got a 6' penalty (I can't remember why)...

Nino: "I did some enduro races in the past and I really enjoyed it. But unfortunately I don't have the time for it right now for everything. The XC races are taking already all my energy. But I will for sure do some more in the near future"

Nino vs Sam

Sagan was junior Xc world champ in 2008. Race was at val di sole so not an easy course - no wonder he has some skills 9n a bike!

@squarewheel: flat pedals vs. flat bars. And go!
  • 23 1
Aaron and Andrew: Kenda used to make the Skratch and Sniff tires that were colored and released a corresponding smell when skidded upon (for example purple corresponded to a grape smell, red to a cherry smell, and so forth). Can we expect Maxxis to produce a Wide Trail-updated version of this industry leading technology?
  • 15 0
No scratch and sniff, but maybe skid and smoke borrowing some drift tire tech? Wide Trail for sure. -AC
  • 5 0
Thank you for clarifying this @Maxxis
  • 8 0
@bbcopeland: of course. Also helpful for mid-race smokescreens.

 To both Nino and Kate:

1. in what way do your tyres differ from serial production tyres? (tpi? compound? weight?)
2. do you run tyre inserts?

Keep having fun biking, I really enjoyed watching last season!
  • 17 0
Nino: All the products we test and help to develop you can buy one day. The tires we were running last year you can buy this summer. With the new 2.4 tires we don't run any inserts anymore. A good rim and tire combination is the key and then you don't need any inserts anymore.

Please make a hard casing rear tire that last a bit longer than the 3c Maxx Gripp, maybe a DHR2 29x2.4 DH casing MaxxTerra or DD Maxx Terra! pleaseeeee Or a Dissector in MaxxTerra or double compound with DD casing or DH Casing for 29ers THANK YOU!!!
  • 4 1
I would like to see DH or DD casings with their dual compound. A DH or DD casing 2.6 Assegai dual compound would be rad!

@Maxxis: Please make a 2.4 WT DHR2 in MaxxTerra DD, and the 2.4 Dissector in DD also

(Basically - make your rear tyres in DD, that's where it's needed)
  • 3 1
@honourablegeorge: We have the DHR2 available now in DD and I'm sure we'll see a Dissector as well! AB
  • 5 0
@Maxxis: My current go to for a rear tire is a Aggressor w DD casing and DC rubber. I always were out the side knobs long before I wear out the center tread. I hate tossing them when the center tread looks perfectly fine but the side knobs are totally undercut. May as well make the center tread softer if the side knobs are the limiting factor on how long the tires last so why not offer an Aggressor w DD casing and MaxxTerra?

TL ; DR please make an Aggressor w DD casing and MaxxTerra rubber.

Thx
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: We haven't received any requests for it TBH. Appreciate the information though! AB
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: Could not agree with this more. Aggressor side knobs wear out too quick.

@mrosie: I thought it was just me shredding the side knobs. Great rear tire though with an Assegai 2.5" up front

Hi guys! I see that a lot of professional athletes tend to walk away earlier than expected from their sport because they lose the fun of it all. How are you able to keep it fun for you in mountain biking? Love you both; thanks for doing what you do!
  • 18 0
Kate here! For me, I think it comes down to balance and making time to reconnect with my love of the sport regularly. I fell in love with mountain biking riding on Mt. Tam with my dad. If I ever need a reminder of what makes mountain biking so fun - I go there and ride with him! There are certain days where I need to have full focus on hard intervals or specific training, but there is always room in the schedule for some fun adventures and time to just ride my bike for the love of it.
  • 12 0
Nino: Thank you! I really love my job and so far I didn't lost the fun. I think the right balance in life and your profession is important.
  • 12 0
To whole team (Scott & Maxxis): Have you tested all of the Maxxis tire/tread combos for rolling speed on dirt, e.g. w/ a power meter to determine which truly roll fastest? If so, any chance of Maxxis sharing this data w/ the rest of us? There are a few lab tests online, and I've done some rolldown testing, but Maxxis publishing field testing data by pros who can consistently reproduce an effort lap for lap would be the holy grail for tire nerds!
  • 14 0
Nino, how much fun did you have punishing Mike Levy on those loose, rocky climbs?
  • 47 0
Nino: "It was a fun shoot with Mike but I was also a little bit disappointed about his interval approach. He not even tried 5' VO2max effort ;-). But on the rest he did a great job ;-).
  • 12 1
Nino: How long Cranks are you running?
Kate: do you incorporate barbell squats/deadlifts/ press in your gym workout?
Maxxis: Any chance to see aggressor in DH casing? Loved the tire, just me and friends punctured the hell out of the DD casing.
  • 14 0
Kate here! I incorporate and recommend all of the above - except for leg press. I believe workouts in the gym should be dynamic and challenging. When it comes to lifting heavy - I try to work the same muscles as on the bike (so typically shorter range of motion squats or dead lifts). But overall I am trying to condition my body to be strong and resilient while moving very dynamically.
  • 3 0
@Maxxis: thanks for reply Kate Smile
  • 3 0
You should ask for them to bring back the Griffin!
It's like the Aggressor(I preferred it) and came in a 2.4 DH casing.
What do you say @Maxxis? I've only asked a few times Smile
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: was it that good? The pattern looks like some awkward sketch and many of us know how these worked out for Conti. The SS would be super tits if they used squared knobs like slaughter or RRazor. Lopes bling bling!
  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: I will be honest, it has been a few years since I raced almost a full EWS season on it. And I really like the DHR2 now, but I remember absolutely loving the Griffin. It had a really good balance between good cornering and predictable drift, better braking than the SS, and super fast rolling. I was a big fan, it did win an EWS...
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: I don’t doubt your expertize. Were you even using it on front?
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: No definitely not. Not quite enough steering traction, I was on a DHF at that point, but now I prefer the steering control of the Assegai in the front.
  • 1 0
 @JesseMelamed: Agreed! Assegai is sweet!
  • 11 0
Nino: My question is regarding nutrition. As a pro cyclist you have access to the best sports nutritionists/labs/etc. Do you work with sport labs to analyze your sweat to determine which nutrients (ie. sodium, calcium, magnesium, etc.) are depleted during exertion and then formulate a personalized 'sports drink' specifically for your needs or do you just use what we all have access to off the shelf?
  • 10 0
Nino:" I just published a new episode of Fitter, Faster and Stronger were nutrition is a big part of it. Please check it out on my Instagram or YouTube. To your question: Yes I do some blood analyzes to check if I have from everything enough. I also did some test about which nutritions are best for my body. According to this I adjust my supplements and nutrition. But I use regular sport drinks and shakes from Sponser Sport Food."

Are there any plans to release the “aspen race” tires to the public?

@Maxxis Why no 29'er EXO or EXO+ tires in MaxxGrip? I want MaxxGrip but am fine with a ~1000g front tire, plus insert. My Assegai DH Casing tire weighs ~1400g.

This is the main reason I run Michelin Wild Enduro right now...
  • 5 0
29er DHF and DHR II EXO in MaxxGrip exist now. I agree at a lighter Assegai in MaxxGrip is needed.
  • 1 0
@DMal: Maxxis calls this EXO but it's actually EXO with DH Casing and folding bead like Assegai. I actually had a shop order me a DHF EXO MaxxGrip tire last year, it was DH Casing and a little over 1300g. It's misleading.
  • 3 0
@davec113: Nope, I have a DHF EXO MaxxGrip in 29 on the front of my bike right now. They exist. The ones on the Maxxis website listed as 3CG/EXO/TR are what you want. The DHF has part number TB00144000 and the DHR is TB00143900.
  • 3 0
@davec113 this is something we're definitely looking into expanding. As @DMal mentioned we do have a couple options now, here is our pn for the DHF: TB00144000

-AC
  • 2 4
@Maxxis: Ok cool. Another suggestion: Don't call DH Casing Tires "EXO". The variations are confusing enough and this is misleading, to the point a shop ordered it for me and we were both surprised at what actually showed up! If you now have EXO, non-DH-Casing tires in MaxxGrip for 29", then great... you're just a few years late!
  • 11 2
To Maxxis: how do you guys feel about the numerous companies making direct copies of highrollers and minions?
  • 12 0
@felimocl Personally, I think it's flattering. I'm proud of the work we've done in tread development over the years but as important as that is, the rubber is equally if not more important. -AB
  • 4 4
@Maxxis: how do you feel about so much of your success being from tire designs developed by Colin Bailey who doesn'tt see a dime from all the success? I know you aren't legally obligated but surely you guys owe him something more than "thanks". Its terrible PR that your most successful tires were developed by someone who hasn't reaped any benefits from it.

  • 4 0
@freestyIAM: Speaking he was sponsored by them at the time I wouldn't say he didn't receive any compensation.
  • 1 1
@bulletbassman: Yep. He got a little something up front but its practically nothing in relation to the sales those tires have. Like even if they just gave me 50c for each tires in royalties I don't think it would erase their profit margin and it would mean Colin saw a more appropriate level of compensation for such an enourmous contribution to Maxxis' MTB tire success. He has gotten more in gofundme donation from appreciative users of his tires than he did from the company that makes $$$ of his designs. Doesn't seem right.
  • 10 1
@freestyIAM: I would love to give all praise to Colin and Maxxis, but none of us knows under which circumstances the design has been made. I mean it’s not like we were there. Developing a tire is surely far more than saying how it should look like. But considering they mention how much Steve Peat helped with that Swampthing (the hell was that tire?!) Lopes with Lopes Bling bling (I wish it was back with minor adjustment and replaced quite crappy Minion SS), Minnaar with Assegai, Brosnan with Dissector: then I think Colin deserves some recognition even though he may not necessarily strive for it. Each tire is a big investment for the tire company and a huge.

Anyhoo... I think Colin and Maxxis deserve to be recognized as company that made some of the biggest contributions to the development of mountain biking. If 27.5 never happened nobody would care, but no Minion DHF and the sport would really be different. So far the only pattern that challenged Minion DHF is the alternating 2/3 center knob pattern of Magic Mary/ Bont SE4 and now Assegai. Then for some DHR2/ G5, but they have zero lean over transition. Great for catch berms on steep stuff but zero precision on intermediate angles. So it is DHF and MMary as the most copied designs.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: when maxxis really maked the jump was with the high roller.. minion came later... Was said by T.Misser interview that those initial times when maxxis kicked in if you weren't on it the differences on track were about 10 15 sec!
  • 1 1
@PauRexs: it seems that Highroller was the king until Sam Hill rode two DHF and until people realized that HR isn’t rolling that fast at all. The only other tires that had any grip were Michelins. They still weren’t exactly on same level with Minions Slow Reezay. Nevegal that so many people have “good memories” with have always been utter shyte in reality. But Magic Mary is the first tire with intermediate knobs that worked and Assegai builds on it’s success. These two are the only ones that conquered the famous HR/ DHF / DHR2 channel. The rest is mock ups. Michelins are kind of there but they are sluggish IMHO. Conti still hasn’t got anywhere in MTB. But for XC/Trail Bontragers all the way. Would love to try Ardents race
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: When Assegais first came out i was totally skeptical about the transition knobs in the channel having only ever ridden tires that felt good if they didn't have any transitional knobs. I equated transitional knobs with Nevegals which were soooo awful (in hind sight i think it had more to do with tiny side knobs which were pointing parrallel to the ground. no way to engage them). Took me until this year to give the MM a shot (some OEs came up on jenson for under $40) and ya, they are awesome.

I guess the trick is not to crowd too many transition knobs into the channel and to keep the side knobs tall. MMs have a transition every 4 blocks center tread knobs. Assegais are more tightly spaced with them occuring every other block which I would have though was too much but people love em. Will give them a shot when the MM wears out this season.
  • 2 0
Whenever someone asks who has won the most World Cup downhiller, I answer 'Colin Bailey'.
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: I'm on the assguy at the moment after spending a load of time on Mary, and it's just as good if not a tiny bit better than the Mary, in my opinion. I want to go back to Mary to check again, but both of them are fantastic tyres in the right casing for your requirements.

 Aaron & Andrew:
Hi guys, for what reason have the awesome tyre logos from the past been replaced with horrible, boring sidewall graphics?
I loved the sight of a fresh Flyweight, Medusa, Swampthing, Larsen, Maxxlite etc back in the day
Cheers
  • 7 0
Hey @J1BB The more colorful hot patches were cool but they also have a tendency to date the tire since styles change. The other side is being a large manufacturer we just don't make tires for the aftermarket and you want to keep your OEM partners happy, so those can be a tough sell. AB

Kate: what's your biggest race-related pet peeve?

Hi MAXXIS friends, here a message from the Maxxis Distributor in The Netherlands, we are happy to see you developed these new tires and will do our best to sell them over here!

@ Nino: Will these new models be your secret weapon to fight against Van Der Poel? Haha, all the best.

Take care!

Nino: " MVDP is also on Maxxis, so unfortunately I don't have any advantage there ;-)."

Aaron and Andrew- Any plans for DH casing tires with harder/faster rubber (anything other than Maxxgrip)? I'd love a 2.5 Aggressor DH casing with Maxxterra.

Technical question- can you mix and match tread patterns, casing and rubber compounds easily or do you have to make a tire mold specifically for one combination of tread/casing/rubber?

Thanks!
  • 2 1
@dcamp2 DH Maxx Terra would probably not be ideal since we have to be careful with the amount of models available but a dual compound version would be more of a possibility.

Of course! Feel free to mix tread, casing, compound all day. Ideally you would run a 3C Maxx Grip or Terra in the font and Dual Compound tire in the rear. Since majority of the weight is in the rear, that will wear faster so it's ideal to have a harder rubber. I prefer a more aggressive tire in the front and a less aggressive, faster rolling tires in the rear, depending on terrain/weather of course. Same applies for casings as well. AB
  • 6 0
@Maxxis: You totally misunderstood his second, and most interesting, question...
  • 18 0
@allmoto616: Definitely did. My apologies. Once you have a mold, you can extrude any combination of our 3C or DC variants with that same tire mold. AB
  • 6 1
 He Maxxis,

will be there a component for winter use in future? Because Maxxgrip, Maxxterra gets so hard and is useless… Dual is no option for me because no grip on wet and cold surfaces… A Maxxwinter - would be great Smile (E13 V1 - was there perfect)

At which Temperature should a Maxxis tire to be stored?

Does the Maxxgrip get harder just form laying around after some time?

The last two years I got some Maxxis which „run out of round“ from the beginning. Did you had a quality issue? And should it now okay?

Why is there no option for a rear time with e.g. 60A in the middle and 42A on the side?

Please give us an dual oder maxxterra in DD - e.g. Dissector … for rear use.

Thanks for your time!
Mike

p.s. Could you please offer the white OEM Maxxis logo for everyone?
  • 4 0
Hey @bonsaimikeA, We've looked into more specific winter durometers in the past but our DNA is not in the snow so it's tricky. Haha great name!

I've been storing my bikes inside for so long it's hard to say. I would recommend above freezing if at all possible, especially with the softer rubbers.

I have not experienced that nor have I heard of that either. With rubber being a mixture, sometimes strange things can happen but nothing consistent I have ever seen.

That can happen with all tires and yes, it has been something we've experienced. With every one riding 29" the tire uniformity requirements have increased and we're continuously working to meet the higher uniformity requirement. It can still happen from time to time but your LBS or dealer should be able to handle right away.

Never came up in development nor was something athletes or the market requested.

We'll work on it!

You don't like the yellow? Currently that's only for OEM and we'll probably stick to the yellow for the forseeable future.

Thanks for the questions! AB
  • 6 0
@bonsaimikeA Followed up with our engineer just to confrm your q's:

+4C is preferred for storage

In regards to the tires hardening:

Tires age, and while we have chemicals in place to keep the rubber as soft as possible for as long as possible, over years of storage in standard garage conditions tires will harden to some degree.

Hope that helps! AB

Question for Kate about 2019 Worlds in MSA - We were there at the race, and were biting our nails down to stubs waiting for the US's females to get to the grid before they closed it. What happened that day to cause you to cut it so close, and what kind of effect do you feel that had on your race?

PS – You're the first American I've been around to watch win a world title, and I doubt I'll ever forget screaming at the TV when you passed Annika after it looked like she dropped you on that climb. So thanks for that memory, way to be awesome!
  • 10 0
Hey there! Typically if you are on the front row to the call up you try to get to the start line as absolutely late as possible. They typically close the boxes about 15 minutes before so we cut it down to the wire to maximize warm up and minimize time standing in the sun. Honestly didn't remember this at all until you mentioned it haha so can't say it impacted my race at all! It probably just took longer to get over there given the crowds but I still had plenty of time to sit there before call ups.
  • 3 0
And thanks for the cheers Smile
  • 6 0
Nino: During the 2019 Absa Cape Epic Henrique Avincini said some things about you in the heat of the moment after one of the stages that occurred during the race. Can you explain what you said that upset him?

To Nino and Kate - What is your favourite bike to ride.

To Aaron and Andrew - is 26" still going to feature for Maxxis in 5 years time?
  • 4 0
Kate here - Scott Spark hands down!
  • 4 0
We will continue to make 26" tires as long as there is demand for them. Our newest treads aren't usually available in 26", but you can still get Minions, High Rollers, and the Shorty so you're covered for most conditions. -AC
  • 11 0
Nino: " My favorite bike is the Scott Ransom. You can climb up everywhere and down hill it's so fun."
  • 4 0
Nino you already run a 120mm fork on your Spark RC, how do you think cross-country bikes will evolve in the future? Maybe resembling the current ''Down-Country'' bikes?

Thanks to you for your time and thanks to Pinbike to make this possible! You guys rocks!
Cheers from Italy!
  • 8 0
Nino: the bikes develop with the race tracks of today. No way I could ride the Tokyo Olympic course on a 26" hardtail with a 100mm fork. But I think reached the maximum in tire size and suspension travel by now.
  • 11 0
Nino: " I run 110mm in the front and 120mm in the back. Tracks are getting more difficult and the bikes need to handle more and more. I think 120mm is soon a standard on XC bikes."

  • 6 0
 Cheeto dust no doubt. -AC

I just want to know if Nino and Kate have ridden the Scott Lunch Ride trails near Fribourg, Switzerland. Rumor has it these are the best lunch ride trails on the planet and I wonder if these two World Champs were able to keep up with the weekend warriors on such a tough loop.

*no I dont have any affilliation to SCOTT.
  • 8 0
Kate here - I have and they are so much fun! Highly recommend. Can confirm: did not get dropped by weekend warriors.
  • 8 0
Nino: " Fore sure I joined some of the lunch ride with the Scott guys. It is defiantly a cool loop and the guys are shredding it! I love the passion they have for the sport. Almost everybody at Scott is living the sport. That's cool to see!"
  • 4 0
@Aaron Chamberlain I was surprised to see the Maxxis Aspen & Recon Race has increased in size with the new Wide Trail option of 2.4inches.

As someone who was using Aspens before Nino made them more> famous, I take it Nino & Kate prefer the benefits of size, grip & compliance more than the 200g weight saving offered per tyre with the older 29 x 2.0 3c Aspen?
  • 1 0
Yes, as Kate replied somewhere in here, equipment choice is about a lot more than just weight. The 2.40 tires might not be the best for every race course, so it's good we have other options. -AC
  • 5 0
To the racers: Would you rather race with a dropper post that was inverted (i.e. seat down for climbs and up for descents) Or race with your bars backwards and 10 lbs backpack on?
  • 7 0
Kate here! This is a fun one. I'd say the former - out of the saddle means full gas Wink
  • 6 0
 To both Nino and Kate:

How to you deal with the pressure/nerves on race day?
  • 1 2
Increasing exposure, just like you need for public speaking, taking falls while climbing, etc.
  • 8 0
Kate here! Routine, routine, routine. When I follow my race day routines it is that last little reminder that I have done everything I can to be race ready. Then, it's game time.
  • 4 0
Nino: I see this as one of my strength. To perform best when the pressure is the highest. Nothing you can learn. Is something that is given to you or not. Feeling all the tension makes me go faster
  • 3 0
Kate, first off I am so proud of what you have accomplished so far and especially last season. Bringing back the overall to the USA after 17 yrs was amazing. The battle between you and Yolanda was on for the ages.

My questions is: Coming out of Juniors with so much success did you feel an insane amount of pressure to be the "savior" of XC mtn biking for the USA and how do you deal with that type of pressure?
  • 3 0
Thank you! Really appreciate all of the cheers. I definitely didn't feel that pressure as a junior. Honestly, at that time I didn't really believe I would be able to make it to the top level and was just focused on making little improvements. If you look at my results, it was 5 years from when I started racing world cups as a junior to when I won at the U23 level. I think for me it came step by step as I realized more and more might be possible. Now, the pressure comes primarily from myself! I really want to achieve what I believe I am capable of doing, not just for me but for all of those supporting me.
  • 3 0
 Kate,
What's the one thing you wish they'd make more in tune for women then they do now?

Nino and Kate,
Now that the Olympics are pushed back a year, WC is pushed back it's start, do you slow down the training some to not get burned out? Assuming you're back at it in August, when do you go full bore to get into race shape?
  • 7 0
Kate here! From my experience so far, SCOTT does a great job with their women's products. Especially this year, I can't wait for you all to see my bikes. In general, though, one thing I struggle with is cockpit customization (brake lever reach, lever placement for lockout, etc.). Brad does a great job of making everything fit for smaller hands but I can imagine for someone who doesn't have a pro mechanic to dial in their set up - this isn't always optimized for women.

As for training - I am still training just as much! But back to a bit more of an early season structure with less intensity until we know exactly when to be race ready.
  • 8 0
Nino: "It's difficult situation for us athletes at the moment, we really don't know when we are back for racing and that makes the planing also really difficult. I hope we will have some national races in July and then hopefully some World Cup races from August on again. I keep going full gas with the training and try to work on some weak points."

 ????
  • 3 0
Kate, I was at the snowshoe world cup and the number of young girls that were in line to meet you after the race was astonishing. Clearly you and the other top female XC riders have pushed the sport to a point that the popularity now rivals or exceeds men's XC (at least in my observation in the USA). My question is, how to you think this growth could occur in other mtb disciplines? it's not like women's DH lacks superstars...
  • 10 0
Kate here! Thank you for the nice note, Snowshoe was one of my favorite events ever. I think it is less about "superstars" and more about competition. In the elite women's field at the moment there are 5-10 women in every race that could win. The podiums aren't often the same from weekend to weekend and there are always extreme battles at the front. I think the level of competition is what makes our events so exciting to watch and is drawing a lot of attention!
  • 7 0
For both Nino and and Kate.

What is your favorite post race/ride beer?
  • 4 1
Kate here! Sadly I am gluten free so beer isn't on the menu. But I heard Sufferfest is gluten free so keen to give that a try!
  • 8 0
 @Maxxis: champagne?
  • 2 0
@Maxxis: Stone’s Delicious IPA and Omission Ale are gluten free too
  • 4 0
Nino and Kate, on which race course in 2019 did you feel your bike setup was most dialed? i.e. you hit the perfect balance of control/speed and had an equipment advantage over the competition.
  • 5 0
Kate here! I felt my set up was perfect at Les Gets - I loved racing the Scott Scale with a dropper post even though it isn't my normal set up. It felt absolutely perfect on that course.
  • 3 0
Nino: "We have the best team around us that makes sure we always have the best setup and equipment. I think that's our biggest advantage. When I'm standing at the start line I always have the feeling I have the best bike and best setup. And I think in the end that's the most important, that you trust your team and your equipment."
  • 3 0
To Nino and Kate: any mental strategies for training? I was on a training ride recently and was supposed to be doing max intensity intervals. No matter how hard i tried to dig i could not seem to “flip the switch” and go all out. I ended the ride with a lot more left in the tank than i was supposed to have left. How do i flip the switch? Thanks Smile
  • 4 0
Hey Kate! Sorry if me and my GF scared you on your ride yesterday! We just moved to RWC from Montana and couldn’t believe we saw you!!!!! Hope the ride went well and hopefully we will see you out on the trail!!!
  • 2 0
Also, Kate, how much riding to gym time do you recommend in a week? Trying to train for CES if it happens this summer. Thanks!
Derrek
  • 5 0
Hey there! No worries hope you had an awesome ride. I spend 15-25 hours on the bike and 3-6 hours in the gym per week. Sorry for such a big range but depends so much on the focus of a training block/fitness levels/goals, etc. Not all hours are created equal! But 2-3 days in the gym per week is standard. Best of luck!
  • 2 0
@Maxxis: oh that’s perfect, thank you!
  • 3 0
How do you (racers, mechanics, and manufactures) approach tire selection/recommendation for a given course?

For example, if a course requires a tire with more grip in the corners, why would you choose a 2.4 Aspen over a smaller and lighter tire with more side knobs (like the Forekaster)? How do you balance volume, rolling resistance, pressure, and knob/tread choice on any given day? Would love to know the thought process here!
  • 4 0
Maxxis - Do you use any silica infused compounds in your mtb tires or just the HYPR road tires? Do you have plans to if you don't already? Sounds like really promising stuff!
  • 5 0
We are always experimenting with our rubber compounds and using silica in our MTB compounds is part of that. -AC
  • 2 0
Do the new 2.4 WT tires fit a 2018 Scott Spark RC? What are the differences between black and grey metal pieces that go on the igus bushing in the rocker link? (I have black ones, grey ones are in the new service kit). Will I be able to upgrade to 120mm rear travel in the future?
  • 5 1
Will the Maxxis Assegai be offered in the same sizes as the high roller/minion in future? I'd love it if a 2.3 were available not just the 2.5in sizing.
  • 6 0
Also, a 2.5 Assegai in EXO and/or EXO+ in Maxxgrip compound, please.
  • 2 0
Hey @themop! No plans for that in the future since it can be tricky to scale a tire like that down. AB
  • 7 0
@DMal: Since you said please, I'll see what can be done Wink AB
  • 2 0
@themop - just curious, why would you want a narrower Assegai? Are you looking for something to cut through the mud better, or are you running narrow rims? It is not a fast-rolling tread pattern, so might as well go for the big one.
  • 2 0
@DMal: good question, all of the above!

Mostly running 24/25mm rims at the mo, then our local trails (Surrey) are sandy and not rough and rocky so having a larger volume tyre is unnecessary. Then going wholesale wider is extra weight across the board and my mates and I like our bikes feeling responsive.

There is a bit of a mud clearance issue with my 2016 Pikes, I wish the arch was a bit higher. Most of these things can be solved with a new bike.....

I'm happy with my DHR2/Aggressor combo but the Assegai is a good looking tread pattern!
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: that's a fair reason. Thanks for the reply. Got a new bike inbound and I'll likely put an Assegai on that.

Does it bug you when guys like me think your minion DHR2 is the best front tyre ever? :-P
  • 2 0
 @themop: Makes sense.

With you talking about mud clearance, I am surprised to hear you are liking the Aggressor. That tire clogs up like crazy!
  • 2 0
@DMal: sandy trails don't clog tyres.... The Aggressor clogs a bit more than my DHR2 on the front but I don't find it terrible... I have a policy of only running shorties at races which might explain something there.

The Aggressor is a favourite rear tyre for us, a good match for the DHR2 up front. Slides in a similar manner and has a bit less grip so you keep faith in the front end.

What's your favourite tyre combo?
  • 1 0
@themop: I've played around with a few combos but am running the boring old DHF 2.5/DHR II 2.4 combo at the moment. We have a lot of free-draining mineral dirt around here that isn't very soft or sticky when wet, so that combo just works.

I did try an Assegai 2.5 DD in front and I think I like it better than the DHF, but it's just so damn heavy. It grips similarly well to the DHF in corners but is a bit more forgiving on the way in, likely due to the transitional knobs. And the soft rubber is just crazy grippy.

I like the Aggressor as well. It's a bit driftier than the DHR, though. If I want something faster-rolling, I've been a fan on a semi-slick like the Specialized Slaughter, which is surprisingly versatile.

I have a set of Michelin Wild Enduros on the way, which seem like they're worth a try. But if they made a lighter Assegai with sticky rubber, I'd run that for sure in front.
  • 1 0
@DMal: you are selling me on the Assegai from a grip point of view. Shame about the weight... Have you tried a DHR2 on the front? It's similar to the DHF but the top knobs dig in more, especially noticeable under braking.

A friend was DHF/DHR2 but didn't like it so went Assegai front. He's loving it. I can't remember his sidewall....

Semi slicks are amazing! Maybe the most fun tyre you can run?
  • 1 0
@themop: I've run 2.3 DHFs and 2.3 Spesh Butchers on the front on 25mm ID rims. Wanted a tyre that would perform better in wet/soft conditions and tried a 2.35 Magic Mary in Soft compound - really happy! No clearance issues on my 2016 Pike fork. Another option might by Bonty 2.4s but I haven't tried them.
  • 6 0
Kate: Carnitas, carne asada, or fish tacos after a big training effort?
  • 7 0
Ooo depends on the day. I am typically a taco after long ride person - I'd go with Fish Tacos if they are from Sanchos but otherwise Carne Asada
  • 5 0
 Hi Andrew and Aaron,
Any chance to bring back the Bling Bling? It could make a fantastic rear in 29 x 2.4
  • 2 1
Probably not since that was a Lopes signature model Wink Plus we have the Minion SS and Aggressor filling that space now. -AC
  • 4 0
@Maxxis: yeah but lopes is like 72 or something....I am sure he doesnt have a patent on the pattern in any case.
  • 4 0
Nino - now the DT Swiss has the XRC in 30mm internal diameter (at least that's what I saw on their website), what makes you decide to run the XMC wheelset instead of the XRC?
  • 1 0
I'm not Maxxis but I would assume it has to do something with the wider internal width and the new 2.4 aspens. Better overall tire shape. Also not completely sure about the wheels but the weights between the two are extremely close so running the wider rim gives a better overall feel.
  • 1 0
@ncgoumas: Both of them are 30mm internal width...
  • 3 0
Kate and Nino: In a sport that requires pushing through the limits of pain, fatigue, and exhaustion during training, what keeps you motivated through the most difficult times?
  • 5 0
Nino: I do it for the love of the sport. From the outside it might look like a lot of pain, which actually it is. But we are used to suffer and when the suffering is over we have quite a good live for the rest of the day
  • 5 0
Kate here! I am motivated by curiosity and a desire to see what might be possible. I never regret trying an failing, but I will always regret backing down or quitting. You never know if you never go!
  • 4 0
Nino: "It wouldn't be as nice if it would be easy. I really like the challenge to give everything to get fitter, faster and stronger. The path is the goal."
  • 6 1
Q for Nino and Kate: how confident are you that XC especially on the top level is a clean sport, no doping etc. in percent?
  • 10 0
Kate here! Generally I would say I am pretty confident although there has been some recent bad news that doping was present in our field during the years I have been competing. I am just hoping we are getting closer to an even playing field as the testing gets better and more rigorous.
  • 3 0
@Nino and Kate: I used to fly quite often for work but when i arrived i was always pretty tired and i wouldn't want to race at a bike race. Do you fly business class and how do you deal with jetlag?
  • 9 0
Nino: the team is paying for economy. With all the miles I'm collecting I sometimes fly business. To fly to the world championship in Canada last year I did buy an upgrade . Back home I had an economy ticket. Jetleg indeed is something not to underestimate. I calculate one day of adjusting for each hour time difference in travelling
  • 10 0
Kate here! To be a world class bike racer, you also need to be a world class sleeper Wink I use melatonin, sleep very well on planes and have a pretty good system for fighting jet lag. I think exercise helps quite a bit and also your body get used to it the more you fly!
  • 5 0
Nino: "You are right, traveling can be stressful and makes you tire. We always try to fly the easiest way and the best possible route. And we also give us enough time to adjust to the timezone and to the climate."
  • 3 0
For Kate: What is your favorite jump on the Stanford campus? the former mulch stepup? the lagunitas stepdowns? The table in the quad? The basketball court bush gap? The tree trunk V stepdown? Also, do you listen to Mac Dre?
  • 2 0
Maxxis How is the breaker tire/insert combo coming along. I know a lot of people are interested in what you got going. What would be the upsides of a more expensive tire vs an insert? Do you think they'll come to market sooner or later.

Kate and Nino: How do the pressures of a home race compare to a foreign races and how do you deal with it?
  • 2 0
@bulletbassman We're always experimenting with different combinations but don't have anything conclusive yet. In due time...AB
  • 3 0
Nino (or @bbcopeland) I just read that you run 110 mm front, 120 rear. Is that an under-forked Spark for a steeper head angle, or an over-shocked spark RC with a longer air spring up front? Thanks! Why the in-between?
  • 1 0
@C0yotekid: how? Is it a regular spark that the front is lowered so everything tilts steeper? Is that what you mean?
  • 1 1
He has to be running a custom 120mm front fork, the top level 100mm sid did can't be expanded to 120mm with just a longer air shaft.
  • 2 0
@clink83: Only the SID Ultimate Carbon was capped at 100mm. Nino was running the regular SID Ultimate which does have a 120/110mm options.
  • 1 0
@ksanman: Cool to know. Thanks for knowledge!
  • 2 0
 @ Nino Schurter,

Do you prefer the Genius over the Ransom for an average trail ride? I know the Ransom suits your aggressive style, but the Genius seems on the lighter side for the gnarlier descents.
  • 2 0
Nino: The SCOTT Ransom is my favourite bike I choose over all. No doubt!
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: I totally agree. That bike is a beast!
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: Hi, we want to attent in the Maxxis Bike Transalp this year (if it will not be cancelled). It would be the first time for us - so the goal is to survive. ;-) Do you have a tire set recommendation for a) dry conditions b) wet conditions? Thanks! Thomas

Not a Question just wanted to say that you guys are awesome, I love watching you guys and love the new series that your doing N1NO. Also you guys should post more on the instagram stories, Love seeing where your riding, Also love the lives you do Kate just got my whoop today because of the live you did the other day!!

Maxxis when are you going to Make FBF & FBR IN 24" x 20" SIZES?
I would buy 10 off each if would help you to see that their is a demand?
Would like to fit them to this bike!

  • 1 0
@aljoburr Don't see that happening unfortunately. Demand is pretty limited.AB
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: Well will just have to promote other brands in same size until you see the light?

www.pinkbike.com/photo/18515473

Just for interest what would be a minimum order to justify making a 24" copy of Minion FBF?
  • 1 0
 Hey this for maxxis.

Have you had any problems with DD casing and cushcore? Ive had three brand new DD tires blow off my rims front and rear after ive finished a ride? The bike will just be sitting there then BOOM tire off the rim? The tire bead is so streched after that it will never go again. Please help lol
  • 1 0
@doctorfuzzz I have heard of people stressing the bead so much that it can possibly stretch it and cause that. What rims are you running? AB
  • 1 0
 @Maxxis: spank oozy 345 30.5 internal
  • 1 0
@doctorfuzzz: Hmmm that seems odd. Reach out to bicycle@maxxis.com and they'll get you sorted out AB.
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: never had an issue with exo casing? Could run them till they were slick but the DD just wont stay on?
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: thanks for your time guys! i will contact them. Still the only tires ill ever run Wink
  • 1 0
@doctorfuzzz: We appreciate the support! We'll get you taken care of! AB
  • 1 0
Nino and Kate: As elite athletes, if you could have any gearing combination in a 1X setup, what front ring and cassette combination would you run, keeping in mind that a larger cassette adds range? EX: 36T front ring, 11-50 rear cassette.
  • 1 0
Oops—meant to say "adds weight" instead of "adds range." Thanks!
  • 2 0
Kate and Nino: Hopefully it's a ways off for both of you (love watching both of you), but what do you envision doing after your professional racing career is over?
  • 6 0
Kate here! I have a degree in Human Biology so likely something in health technology. But hoping to race for many many more years - plenty of time to figure that out after!
  • 4 0
Nino: I'm still loving my current job too much to be thinking about what's in 5 years....
  • 2 0
How old were you guys when you got your first sponsorship. Any tips you have for someone looking to take riding to the that level?
  • 4 0
Kate here! I started out racing for a local team - Whole Athlete - which supported me as a junior. Of course my early sponsorships were just discounts and a great crew to train with! But it progressed from there. Best advice: start small and work your ass off.
  • 6 0
Nino: I was 16 years old. There is only one advise: Enjoy riding, enjoy what you do.If you ride fast enough and win races , the rest will come by itself.
  • 3 0
What do you listen to before a race? What kind of music / any specific tracks get you pumped up to slay it?
  • 8 0
Kate here! A little bit of everything - but definitely some gangster pump up jams.
  • 2 0
Nino: I love music. But I'm not listening to music before races. To be fully focussed I can't be distracted by music
  • 1 0
Nino: obviously you're still the best in the world, but last year it seemed the younger guys were making you work harder for the wins. Will delaying the Olympics by a year make a difference for you?
  • 8 5
What is your estimate for the percentage of riders in the UCI elite and olympic classes that are using PEDs?
  • 2 1
 To Nino or Kate
  • 3 1
Note WADA's admission that autologous transfusions are currently undetectable. No need to take PEDs to boost performance.
  • 7 0
Kate here - I hope no one! I trust my competitors to make it an even playing field but of course you can never be certain. All I can say for sure is that the most I am willing to take as an athlete is an iron supplement for my health Smile
  • 4 0
 @Maxxis:*and sleepy time tea
  • 3 0
For Nino and Kate. How much training riding is done per week (miles, vertical feet, hours)? Nonstop rides for a few hours?
  • 5 0
Really depends on the week! For me training hours range from 15-25 on the bike and 3-6 in the gym. Unless it's the Kate Epic - then we get up to 35-40 hours Smile
  • 5 1
When will there be a totally new Spark?
  • 1 0
Next couple of years, but it looks like "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
  • 3 0
790g/tires ~ 5% increase bike wt ( vs other race tires) ......you both ok with this?
  • 5 0
Kate here! Tire choice comes down to a lot more than just weight. We do a lot of testing to ensure we are using the fastest equipment and there are many other factors!
  • 3 0
Nino: where does this weight number come from?
  • 2 0
Kate or Nino how is training going through this covid pandemic? Any thoughts on it? Are you guys able to get out and ride trails or road?
  • 4 0
Kate here! It' been going well. Luckily able to ride outside, have a great zwift set up and gym at home. But far from normal given our uncertain race schedule!= and everything going on in the world.
  • 5 0
Nino: "In Switzerland we are aloud to train outside but not in groups. So I try to make the best out of it and I'm training quite hard at the moment. Similar like in winter when I prepare the season."
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: thank you both very much.
  • 2 0
Kate and Nino. What is your favourite interval style workout you do in the buildup for an XC season? One that you know when you execute well you are ready for the season?
  • 4 0
Kate here! I like on offs - 30/30s or 40/20s.
  • 5 0
@Maxxis: OMG 40/20s. I have to reverse those numbers.
  • 2 0
Are 2.4 WT and 30mm I'd rims going to become the new standard for XC racing? What pressures? When do you choose to run inserts, and how does that affect the pressure?
Thanks!
  • 3 0
More bike brands are designing their coming XC race bikes to have clearance for the larger rubber so the option will be there for riders. WT XC tires will be more common place in the future but may not be the right choice for every situation. We would recommend starting at your base pressure and removing air from there, but our WT options will measure a full 2.40" wide at 25 PSI. -AC
  • 2 0
Nino: the 2.4 tires with 30mm rims allow us to go down to 1.2-1.3 bar which really helps traction, control and low rolling resistance. Inserts are not needed anymore with this volume
  • 2 0
@Maxxis, with the Aspen tire tread pattern standing the test of time (it seems), why aren't tread features used on this tire seen in other tires?
  • 4 0
Which features in particular did you have in mind? The chevron "ribs" of the tread pattern don't scale up very well, but the other transition and side knobs are similar to other XC treads in our line. -AC
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: The chevron ribs, the transition knobs of similar size to the chevron ribs, the interrupted line of staggered & paired side knobs. Understandably, these might not necessarily apply to more gravity-oriented tires, but perhaps for other XC style tires.
  • 5 1
If you was super hero who would you be? and do you like cake

  • 2 0
Kate: How did you find time for both earning your degree from Stanford and training for racing? And what is your favorite trail in Northern California?
  • 6 0
It was definitely a balance and required a lot of time management but it is much easier when you are doing two things you love and believe in. Favorite trail in Marin is Solstice
  • 4 1
Maxxis: Have you ever encountered knockoff or bootleg Maxxis tires? Besides the entire industry being Minion knockoffs
  • 5 0
Sadly we have. It's not super common, but we do see it occasionally. Our customer service team monitors various sales channels for this kind of thing. -AC
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: Followup Question: If I had a set of tires I was suspicious about, how could I tell if they’re real or not?
  • 3 0
@DeepWoods831: there are a number of ways to tell. All of our legit tires will have a small bar code on the inside of the casing near the bead somewhere. If there is no bar code, or it has been removed, the tire is either a knockoff or grey market. You might also be able to tell by the hot patches on the side wall or even what's molded into the actual rubber on the sidewall. For instance the mold number for the tread pattern should be there and correspond to the correct model. -AC
  • 2 0
@Maxxis: Thank you for the help! Off to go rip some possible “Maxxxus” tires off a rim..
  • 2 0
Hey Kate! Bay Area native here. What are your favorite trails in each region? (Ie, north bay, SF, peninsula, south bay, and east bay)
  • 2 1
My favorite trail in Marin is Solstice! Love going back to trails I grew up riding and that were technically very tough for me at the time.
  • 2 0
Have you ever tried riding a little heavier Aluminium bike vs your light carbon bike? If so how much of a difference in time is there? Thanks,
  • 1 0
 To Nino and Kate
  • 5 0
Nino: Todays full suspension bikes can't be made in aluminum at the same level. This would be quite a step back
  • 2 0
 Maxxis,
Any plans to release a DC version of the Dissector? Any other heavy trail/light enduro tires being released this season?
  • 2 0
Yes, a DC Dissector is on the way. We'll have more compounds and size options in other treads as well. And hopefully Crankworx Whistler happens so we can share some new stuff there. -AC
  • 2 0
WE have DC versions of the Dissector in 7.5 and 29 x 2.4 available now. No, I think the lineup is currently pretty solid at the moment but we're always looking to improve! AB
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: I believe he wants one in DH casing.
  • 1 0
@bulletbassman: I would see that happening on a DHF or DHR way before the Dissector. AB

@Maxxis: Nope, I did not mean DH casing. Thanks for your response, I see them on your site now they're just hard to get a hold of from stores! :-) Excited to try one out.

Question for Kate. What products does Brad use in his hair. So much sheen and shine.
  • 3 0
If the mechanic/racer roles were reversed and Nino & Kate were wrenching, whose mechanic would win in a race?
  • 3 0
Hey Nino: have you ever consider taking a race on baggy shorts? They look really cool.
  • 1 0
Nino or Kate: Best of luck this year, my question would be what was the first "real bike" you started on as a kid and how do are you able to sustain long burst of moment while minimizing lactic acid build up?
  • 2 0
Kate/Nino: What is the best/most memorable heckle you've ever received during a race from a spectator? Or are you too focused to hear anything as all?
  • 1 0
Kate and Nino, you both get to ride in some amazing places and with a variety of people.

Who's the baddest influence when it comes to clowning around? Looks like Brendog would be mad fun.
  • 2 1
Nino: I am 16 years old and I race xco. I want to race professionally. I’ve heard that some people can’t go pro no matter how hard they train is that true? And any tips?
  • 9 0
Nino: Becoming a pro is not something you can force by tons of training. It requires talent at first. If you ever make it to the World Cup, count on being at the start line with 150 of the worlds best talents. And they all train very hard. If the talent is missing, you can train as much as you want and still not being successful. That's a fact. But the most important thing on the way becoming a pro is to love what you are doing. Combined with your talent you can make it. Stay positive an believe in yourself.

Kate - love that you post videos of your home/gym workouts! Have you ever thought of putting together and sharing your program? Not the secret sauce of course!

For Kate, because racing for NICA was part of what got you into the sport, what do you think of how NICA has grown and changed?
  • 1 0
For Kate, because racing for NICA was a big part of what got you into the sport, what do you think of NICA now and how much it has grown and changed?
  • 2 0
For Kate and Nino, I am 13 years old, how do you know when you are fully recovered? How often do you take rest days?
  • 2 0
I see more pro, amateur and recreational riders positioning their saddles nose down - any benefit to that?
  • 2 0
Possibly to alleviate a perennial pressure and or to level the saddle with the climb, which helps for better climbing. You can check on my profile into pictures with some more explanation. I’ve built a prototype that allows for changing saddle tilt while riding via lever on the handlebar.
  • 1 0
@Nino: How do these new 29' tires compare to your previous Dougast collees from the past in terms of grip, weight, durability, rolling resistance?
  • 5 0
Nino: when we started using Dugast tubulars 2004, the tires back than were by far not what they are today. The tire manufacturers - not only MAXXIS- basically built the characteristics of a tubular into the new generation of tires. That's why a high performance MAXXIS tire of today has the same and even better characteristics of a tubulars, without the hazel of glueing and being limited to fewer sizes and treads.
  • 1 0
Nino and Kate - Congrats on an amazing 2019! What are two geometry changes you each would make on your race bike and why. Thanks and good luck in 2020!!!!!
  • 7 0
Nino: My SCOTT Spark and the one the rest of the world is riding is tailor made for me. I had quite some say how the geometry should turn out. So, no changes needed.
  • 1 0
Kate? How are you staying sane during this crazy time when mtb is so hard to come by with many parks closed etc. Also how did you do in your time in NorCal MTB NICA league?
  • 1 0
Nino, will the new 2.4 tyres work ok in New Zealand? And do you have any plans to find out, first hand?
Btw, great what you do for the sport!
  • 1 0
Hello all, I hope you guys are good as you can be with everything going on! I was curious, what was your first bike? Also, is there anyone on your team with a great nickname?

Special question for Kate - what's your favourite dessert !?

Totally different question for Nino -. .. ... what's. . .... your favourite dessert. . . !?

Thanks heaps Nino and Kate for coming on, interacting with us, and for all the good info!
  • 1 0
To Kate and Nino, how often (sessions per week) do you incorporate gym training in back-to-back WC weekend situations?
  • 1 0
I typically do 2 sessions a week during World Cup weeks - one pre race and one post race
  • 1 0
Nino: it takes about 30 % of my training
  • 2 0
Nino - what intervals do you use to improve your endurance(aerob).
  • 2 0
How do you handle adrenaline and your heart rate in the start line ?
  • 2 0
Kate here - deep breaths! Focusing on my breath helps me stay in the moment and also is a great way to settle your heart rate, keep your oxygen levels up and get race ready.
  • 4 0

@Maxxis Nino what podcast were you in that you posted on your story a while back i never could find it again
  • 2 0
What courses would you still choose a hardtail for? How do you decide?
  • 1 0
Kate here! I still race the hardtail given I am a lighter rider. Albstadt and Les Gets are examples of courses where I would race it.
  • 6 0
Nino: there are still some races out there- World Championship in Albstadt for example- where a light hardtail is better over a full suspension bike. In my opinion a good race track requires a full suspension bike
  • 1 0
Kate & Nino: are you focus on your power-meter data during a race or are you more on the sensations?
  • 4 0
Kate here! I typically don't have power showing in a race but if there is a long, sustained climb I will sometimes use it for pacing. I used it in Switzerland on the pavement climb for pacing at World Championships! But that is one of the only times I have used it at that level of race.
  • 5 0
Nino: during training yes- during races it's full gas without power meter. Except at Cape Epic , where I control my output with a power meter.
  • 2 1
What studies would you point towards to support the use of post ride icing for recovery?
  • 7 0
Kate here! I have done a lot of research on this. While hot/cold therapy can be helpful - most research points towards ice being a bad idea right after a ride. Inflammation is part of how our muscles adapt to training stimulus. So a little inflammation is needed for that! If I use ice it's in combination with heat and at least 3-4 hours after training load. Others may disagree but that's what works for me
  • 1 0
Kate - Is the Spark your main bike, or do you get more leisure time out on something like a Genius, or road bike?
  • 2 0
I spend most of my time on the Spark or on my Scott Addict Disc road bike. Both are great training machines!
  • 1 0
Kate - I grew up in San Rafael and am curious what is your favorite place to ride in Marin?
  • 1 0
Awesome! I grew up training a lot over by Tamarancho - so those trails, Solstice and the trails along san geronimo ridge are some of my favorites.
  • 1 0
 @dirtyburrito Hmmm
  • 1 0
Maxxis what are you doing to your tires ,the rubber seems to rebound to much, slow it down please
  • 3 0
Try our 3C MaxxGrip or even Super Tacky options if you want slower rebounding rubber. -AC
  • 2 0
When is the 2021 Spark coming?
  • 5 0
Nino: good question! As of now the current SCOTT Spark leaves everything behind in racing and in test reports. The next Spark needs to be even better- wich is not easy to achieve. But stay positive, things are in the works....
  • 1 0
Are you guys able to train differently to increase power/endurance/etc. now that race season is cancelled?
  • 2 0
Nino: the season is not cancelled. Let's stay save but positive

to Kate and Nino, would you see any benefit in a CX bike with enduro-ish geometry? have you tried it?
  • 1 0
Will nino ever feature in the red bull fast life series ????
  • 5 0
Nino: only RedBull athletes are getting this chance. I'm not in this pool....
  • 1 0
Kate - any desire to get into the pro road racing scene?
  • 4 0
Maybe some day! But fully focused on mountain at the moment.
  • 1 0
 Tire inserts (Cushcore, Pepi's, etc.)
Do you use them?
Pros/Cons?
  • 2 0
Nino: very much depends on the course. But after we switched to wider 2.4 tires , inserts are not needed anymore

@maxxis - Please make an Ardent Race in 29x2.6
  • 1 0
We have the Rekon in a 29x2.6 but don't see the Ardent Race happening. AB
  • 1 0
No plans for that currently. Have you checked out the Rekon in a 2.60? -AC
  • 1 0
Where are the greatest trails you have ever been on?
  • 1 0
@Maxxis : Thoughts, or plans for Skinwall CX tires?
  • 3 0
Think they're cool but don't see if happening due to sales volume. Definitely going to see more on the gravel tires though! AB
  • 2 0
Not right now, we're focusing more of our drop bar efforts to gravel where we do have skinwall options. -AC
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: I figured. Oh well, Thank you for the reply.
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: Do you know of a way to find out what tires you make that are available in Skinwall? I have been looking product, by product. Which is rather tedious. I hope I've missed some search option.
  • 1 0
@notu: You'll want to look for the SK in the name. Off the top of my head the 27.5 & 29 2.4 DHR, 29 & 27.5 x 2.5 DHF, 29x2.4 Rekon, 29x2.25 & 2.35 Rekon Race all have the darker brown skinwall color. Then the Rambler, Re-Fuse, Ardent, and Ikon have the lighter color. HOping it will all be consistent in the darker color soon! AB
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: The RAVAGER would be nice in a Skinwall... if you're taking requests. Wink
  • 1 0
@notu: Got it! Where are you riding that you're digging the Ravager? AB
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: I live in Leavenworth WA (Central Washington State). I prefer the ALL TERRANE. However, if resources are being put into Gravel riding and not CX, the RAVAGER looks the best "gravel" tire for my area.

When was the last time you serviced your own bike - Kate and Nino

Does the new 2.4 aspen and rekon race fit a Scott scale?
  • 2 0
 Yes.
  • 2 0
 @bbcopeland: Thank you Smile
  • 1 0
no problem, just don't pump it up to 5bar!
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: I am unable to to find a front tire in your line up that works in late day loose. Bontrager XR3 2.2 is what I will run in stead. Edge blocks too close and uniform in Rekon and most others. Aspen center tread is too floaty for loose. Maxxis tires are the best on loose over because they often find the substrate. With no substrate the spaced edge blocks on the XR3, with different stiffnesses, dig and give warning. The center tread is spaced nicely and deep enough to help.

Help me be a loyal customer! Please make an XC tire that rolls fast and is great on loose. (I do have a Forekaster on the single speed, which is the best for this in your line up right now. Could roll faster...)
  • 1 0
@efontana: Well if Maxxis is good enough for the World champs, they are probably just happy with that...
  • 1 0
@sevn: Neff won the Olympic test race. Kate crashed out. If you look at the XR3, the edge knobs are Minion like in space and shaping. The XR3 is a more forgiving setup and Maxxis has a year to make it exist as a choice for their riders where it belongs, as a Maxxis tire. A year on laurels is not the right answer. This new tire on the front and an Aspen on the back wins it.

[Rekon is a first day tire when the course is still good. Plow the course enough and that tire will float. You have to nurse the Aspen through loose and make up for it everywhere else.]
  • 1 0
 @efontana: ardent in the front?
  • 1 0
@clink83: The Ardent [race] edge blocks are too close together. It will float and go all at once. www.jensonusa.com/Maxxis-Ardent-Race-3C-29-Tire-1

This is sort of a Crossmark 1 vs Crossmark 2 thing. The Crossmark 1 was too tight on the edge as well... Lots of wash out wrecks for me on that. A Larsen TT was a little slower, but more predictable. Gunn Rita would run the Larsen TT over the Crossmark if I recall correctly.

It might be that weekend riders generally ride on 1st day condition trails. Tight edge blocks rail and go fast in these 1st day conditions... they feel great until the second day or late day race.

Nino, do you think if a course was technical enough you could beat Van Der Poel?
  • 8 0
He has shown that he can beat him on any course...
  • 1 0
@sevn: I dunno. MvdP isn’t as solid on the DH as Nino.
  • 4 0
@jclnv: I mean Nino can beat MvdP on any course!
  • 2 1
@sevn: I dunno dude. I’m sure even Nino would admit that MvdP would drop him on a course with multiple punchy climbs.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: sure mvdp has shown it last season, but i guess it depends on the daily form...
  • 13 0
Nino: MVDP has a great future ahead in cycling. No doubt. He just has to figure out where that will be. If he is not focusing 100% on MTB I know I can keep up with him in the next years. Because all my passion and focus is on XCO racing.
  • 1 0
@Maxxis: Nino has been working on his short punchy climbs as part of interval training.
  • 2 1
@efontana: I’d love nothing more than to see Nino beat MvdP. If only because it makes mountain biking look pretty good against road!
