The warm and sunny Southern California weather showed itself for the second round of racing at the Southridge Winter Series presented by Shimano. What a fantastic year for the 2010 Halo BDS, where do we start?

The first main change was to bring in Dave Franciosy and work together with one sole aim, to make the U.K National Series the number one National Series in the World. Dave and I used to be big enemies ten years ago as he ran Southerndownhill.com while I was the face and voice of Descent-World. Both passionate about the sport my focus was on the tracks, riders, marshals, commissaires and the UCI/British Cycling while Dave took care of sponsorship, the pits, media and the BDS website and did a sterling job.

Over the past few years, Martin Soderstrom has doubtlessly become one of the top freeride mountain bikers in the world. In the last 2 years alone, Martin has won 11 events and placed 5th overall at the 2010 FMB World Tour. Signing with Specialized is another rung in the ladder to stardom for him and he is ready to show off the new partnership. Martin will ride his new P.3, SX Trail, or Demo 8 at lots of contests all over the world and once again rock the FMB World Tour.

Even though we find ourselves in deepest winter in most parts of the country, in our minds, at least, the coming season is just around the corner. Surely the lazier ones amongst us will say that there is plenty of time, but how close the first races are in reality, is clarified by the race calendar.

The brand new track helped 60 riders burn all the Christmas turkey out of their legs after a long winter break.

The year 2010 was full of variety for me, from really muddy and cold sessions to warm sunny days in a nice location. I love working with different people and trying to get the best out of the spot - no matter what the weather's like at that moment.The riders went to their limits, sometimes followed by big crashes and broken bones. Considering the boys' health, I hope the next season will be less painful. I really want to thank my fearless riders for their effort and dedication!

Scott Sharples was the Junior Downhill Coach for the Australian National Team and also coached many of the World’s fastest mountain bike athletes and four World Champions, including Sam Hill. He is currently working with the USA’s Junior MTB Gravity racers, but inside he answers your questions about going faster!

This week Scott answers questions from users I-ride-on-dirt, Rock-shox-bart-318, TonyabbottPM, Strawberry1, and SteezYesPlz on everything from being more stable and going faster on rough terrain to which shaving cream to use on your nether region.

With most of Australia's factory riders sitting out this race for various reasons, it is interesting to note that the majority of bikes are standard sales' room models. It reinforces that it is the rider, not the bike, that produces the fast times. Most have adapted their particular bike to suit themselves in the form of tyres, handlebars and grips. As well as setting the suspension to their preference and the shifters/brakes to suit their ideal position. At this round some riders chose to lift their levers a little higher (or roll their handlebars back) to combat arm pump from the braking ruts that had formed on the track.

Let's take a closer look at the bikes underneath the fastest riders at the second Australian National Round.

2011 has begun. 3-4th January. There is a lot of snow on the ground and it keeps on falling down from the sky above. Like last year, our first ride of the new year took place at an indoor skatepark at another end of our small country. There we spent a whole night riding, filming and having fun.

This year has been sick on so many levels. Getting to travel around the UK, as small as it may be has been a real experience. I've seen some of the most difficult tracks in the world ridden by the best riders in the World.

The biggest Jump Jam group ride in Canada! CamelBak had prizes, hot food and karaoke. During Crankworx this annual jam gathered the best DJ riders from around the world. Hosted by Kirt Vories.

Skullcandy team rider Andrew Taylor worked hard to build a course with big jumps that would allow for some progression of the sport, and I think you can see that happened. Mike Montgomery took this opportunity to throw down 720s over the 35ft jump, probably some of the biggest ever done on a bike.

The weather’s been amazing lately, with many warm, sunny days and a few rainy ones here and there. We got some solid rain one morning, which threw off the day’s plans, so I decided to go to the step-up instead and do a bit of filming. I brought my slope bike out there and had a good time trying some tricks that I’d only done on my hardtail. With the sun coming out the next day, many made their way over to Post Office to do some digging. It was productive to say the least, and with a few more days of work, there should be a couple new lines running!

The second round of the Australian National downhill series is currently underway in the alpine resort of Mount Baw Baw, Victoria. The eastern regions of Australia have been receiving unseasonal amounts of rain and many roads around the race venue are closed.

Chris and I have organized our own little program for 2011, both wanting to tone down the traveling a bit for this year. With the love of the sport still flowing through our veins, we will be racing as much as our budget allows while putting more emphasis on coaching, event and media ventures.

On January 8th, 2011 Taiwan had its first Urban DH Race. Specialized was one of the sponsors and brought Sam Hill in as the guest of honor.

The race scene in Taiwan is nothing like what it is in North America. Often the only way to find out about races is word of mouth, and nine times out of ten you find out after the race is over. After chasing a rumor about Sam Hill coming to Taiwan in January to race in an Urban Downhill, I decided to put a team together.

2010 was a very busy year not only for our design and production crew, but also for our riders who had an exceptionally good season - in fact it seems that every major event of last year was dominated either by our own factory team riders, or riders from other teams using our gear.

There were so many moments to remember that we decided to wrap them all up in one place.

Just like the Killswitch before it, the Roam from Black Market Bikes has piqued a lot of interests from the AM crowd that likes to hang it out a little more when they ride. Carter and crew have been hard at work on this new bike and the most recent revisions show great promise.

Sixty hours later and we're full to the brim and bursting! We stayed up until 04:00 to answer frantic calls and e-mails regards registration.

USA Cycling's 1st DH Champ Qualifier in 2011 to be held at Bootleg Canyon on the President's Day Weekend

USA Cycling’s first DH National Champ Qualifier for 2011 kicks off this February 18th to 20th at Bootleg Canyon, in Boulder City, Nevada with 3 days of racing and camaraderie. With the magnificent and demanding terrain of the Mojave Desert, it is common to see many up and coming young US racers making their pro debut on the President's Day Weekend right here. This race is not just for the groms as Dan & Gee Atherton took 1st and 2nd place two years ago at this very race.

Event organizer/race promoter Downhill Mike was quoted saying “You never know who you’ll see or race against at Bootleg“.

James Visser just made the trip up here from San Diego to ride and chill for a week. Due to the steady rain, most spots were far from running, but with a little work we got in a nice session on Hone’s jumps early in the week. The trails were running great despite a few puddles here and there, so we got some runs in out there as well. However, we spent the most time at the step-up, as the sand soaks up most of the rain and it runs great this time of year. Towards the end of the week we got a big sesh going out there, with Greg Watts throwing down some big tricks like a bar spin to tailwhip and even a double flip! James went for the double flip, and got close, but under rotated on one and landed right on his head. Thankfully he was perfectly fine after a moment of shock, so everyone decided to call it after that.

It was a rad week of shredding, enjoy!
