PRESS RELEASE: Alt Alt Bike Products


ALT/ALT Bike Products is a new company formed by two guys who wanted to make suspension bearing replacement more accessible to the home mechanic.

DIY solutions are almost free but using a DIY solution to replace a suspension bearing is risky because you could damage the new bearing and possibly the bike frame. This is because DIY parts don’t properly fit the bearing OD or securely align on the bearing and frame. Even if DIY was free, finding replacement frame parts in 2021 isn’t easy. A specialized tool is a must.

We wanted to create a tool kit that was first and foremost safe to use as well as inexpensive. Just a bare bones kit focused on getting the job done and getting back to riding.

1. Removes and installs suspension bearings without damaging the new bearing or the frame components.
2. Fits lots of suspension bearing sizes. See below.
3. Is designed from the ground up to be inexpensive.

Quality Tool

The tool does a quality job because it’s made out of an engineering thermoplastic called acetal:
• Acetal can be machined to tight tolerances, so the tool aligns real nice on the bearing and frame.
• Acetal is real frame friendly. No scratches.

The kit is less expensive because:
• The parts are designed as simple shapes which are quick to manufacture.
• Acetal doesn’t require anodizing.
• Everything else in the kit is pared down to only what is necessary. Just a bare bones kit.

 Hmm this complete set for $75, or the competing manufacturers bare threaded rod with fancy anodizing for $100 and two dozen individual bearing press cups at $20 each... decisions decisions.

 Does the complete set come as pictured in a box with all the different drift sizes, sleeves sizes, pilots, rod, nut, and step? I went to their website and it says $95CAD and there's no description of what the package contains. Also, not sure if $95CAD is just a specific drift/sleeve size for a specific bearing like some Chinese sellers on Ebay would do. Also note that the complete package will not remove a double press bearing which needs to be pulled out using a blind hammer puller (like on my Specialized Stumpjumper's rear triangle axle pivot).

 Thanks for noticing. This is exactly why I designed this kit. Well, that and our two bikes have 5 different sized bearings and who knows what my next bike will have. The Forbidden druid has a 37mm suspension bearing!!! Covered. PS. I tried real hard not to design crap.

 Talk about perfect timing. I have a blind puller, but no bearing press and need to do a set for a friend on a Bronson. Given the number of bikes I service, a no brainer addition to my toolkit.

 Stainless steel is the WRONG choice for the bolt and nut. Hopefully they never see a stuck bearing and a 200lb gorilla using the wrenches 'cause that will gall together and cold-weld nicely. Zinc-plated 12.9 or 8.8 would have been fine and saved a couple more bucks. Odd choice to go stainless if they're all about low cost.

 hey @AltAlt: design engineer here with a bit of experience with stainless fasteners in various industries. They are all good until they're not, and then they are really really not, and need to be cut apart. The main issue that starts galling is excessive heat via excessive friction, say like someone using a rattle gun and spinning nuts down really fast, but can also be caused by a bit of dirt etc in the thread causing heat to start. A bit of anti-seize goes a long way to preventing it, that and the person using the hardware to be attentive (both out of your control I acknowledge)

 I watched a youtube science video today about nasa's unfounded concern about cold welding in the vacuum of space. Surely there'll be enough grease present in the home workshop environment to not have it as problem. That said, I have cold welded an ally elbow into an ally heater jacket on an Zetec engine when dry fitting almost straight after machining.

 @AltAlt: I have owned a Wheels Manufacturing press kit for a long while, works great. Also, the poverty method of sockets and threaded rod does the exact same job, IF you have the right Ø sockets. And while yes the forces needed to pull or push a bearing from it's race shouldn't be high, if anything goes wrong (like complete user error not removing a pivot fastener) then the stainless hardware has a good chance of making a bad party go worse very quickly. Plus what's the BOM price for 18-8 versus 8.8 for the end user, that's a couple bucks that could be shaved off. Seems like you guys are on the right track but stainless just stuck out like a sore thumb to me. Thanks for replying!

 @AltAlt: Can't see any issue with it, like yeah they're not as resistant to corrosion as stainless, but seeing this tool will spend the majority of it's life either in the box it came in or a toolbox it's not going to be too much of an issue, and rather that the tool becoming stuck in a frame!
I was thinking you could just swap the nuts to keep costs and waste down, but dissimilar metals could end up with galvanic corrosion happening if the end user left them assembled in storage etc

 @vr6ix: When using the DIY socket (used for removal) I didn't like two things. 1) Socket size. The bearing needs to clear into the socket, so you pick the socket based on the bearing OD size. Fine. Then you hope that the frame you have has room for that size socket. There are a lot of frames that have angled features in the area that you need to be flat. If you're good there then 2) the socket has a square drive. If it's a 3/8 drive then it's a 10mm square "hole" to fit, so you got to find the tightest bolt that goes through there so that the tool stays aligned. Crooked removal pooches your frame. Chances are the bolt to socket are loose. PS. you probably have more than one size bearing to do. I was lucky, my Django has one bearing size, but the Mrs. Trek Fuel has 4 diameters to deal with! Then there's install where the "washer" to push in the bearing MUST be the exact dia as the OD of the bearing otherwise you will damage the bearing and have to replace it sooner. $100 for a bearing set? Yeah. This is the reason I designed the tool. I'm going to do a video on just this because there are lot's of DIY videos that are leading folks down a dangerous path. PS. I'm going to get some new screws and nuts and do some testing. THANKS for the input!

 The centering pilot that goes inside the ID of the bearing is a really cool future. Seem like it would be very helpful in keeping the bearing centered and square when pressing in.

 I tried a cheaper bearing press kit from bearingprotools.com and was very unimpressed. The threaded rod actually bent and pushed the bearing sideways into the alloy frame a little. Fortunately I could smooth it out. I bit the bullet and ordered a wheels manufacturing press and the drifts I need for my bike and am totally in love. It was probably about twice the price of this for just the sizes I need, but I would say well worth it for the peace of mind. A good tool is worth it when I could damage my frame, like I almost did with the cheap tool.

 I have a bearingprotool press and can't get my bearings out. I wish they didn't rely on tapping the bearings out - a press in/out is much better. Will buy the Alt/Alt one as soon as it's back in stock and the website isn't down!

 I have a Wheels Mfg. press set, and it's great. But it's awesome to see a more affordable option available!! If you have a FS bike and do your own wrenching, a set of bearing drifts is a really good addition to the toolbox.

 I've been considering the RRP bearing press but that requires a separate adapter purchase(s) based on bearing size. This seems to solve that issue and is good enough for occasional home use.

 Im stoked on this. i dont have the sizes with me now but i know i have to change out the DU bushings in my rock shox rear shock. do you know if this will work in that case? thanks

 We designed this kit for suspension bearings only, so I hadn't even considered using it on DU bushings. If your DU busing is 10mm, 12mm or 1/2in, our kit will be way too large for this. But thank you for bringing this need to our attention. We'll look into this kind of tool.

 Just a warning to anyone looking into getting this: the derlin material is SOFT and absolutely does not hold up. I bent the rod and smashed one of the drifts —following the instructions to the letter.

You will still have to buy a bearing puller, as this tool cannot handle blind bearings, which come in abundance on most bikes.

Together, this is cheaper than the Alt alt kit, and it’s metal.

Alt alt doesn’t stand by their cheap products, and will ask you to pay to ship it back to them. In my case, it would have cost me 50% ($30+) to send my broken alt alt kit back to them.

 Yea, this is my issue. I get excited when I see a new bearing kit, only to find there is no new blind puller. There really needs to be some innovation and improvement around removing blind bearings, the tools I've used on the market today suck and it is always an anoying, tedious process.

 @shinook: I've seen some somewhat affordable bearing pullers at Harbor Freight or something to that effect. They connect in and then have a slide puller. Is that stuff all lame BS? I've not much experience with it.

 @shinook: I've got the Wheels Mfg extractors that correspond to my current bike, and they seem to work ok. It just seems like the trick with blind pullers is to make sure all grease is cleaned from the inner race, the puller head is tightened to many ugga-duggas, and you've got some way to hold the part of the frame while you hammer a piece of rod against the puller.
